And in [[spoiler:"The Scent of the Hyena", he falls in love with himself. * CosmicPlaything: ''Ohhh boy''. Outside of the rare [[ThrowTheDogABone bones]], this universe hates Zig. It generally [[YankTheDogsChain yanks his chain]], has him experience CantGetAwayWithNuthin, and makes hardly anything go right for him (including via making most of the series a huge HumiliationConga with his name on it). He also oftentimes goes hungry and clearly gets the most abuse in the show, much is due to [[ArchEnemy Sharko]] who's a LightningBruiser with SuperStrength. Oh, especially (but not exclusively) in season 1, the other animals usually treat him like [[AnimalsHateHim a punching bag at worst]] or [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer a joke at best]].

* {{Flanderization}}: While generally not [[ExaggeratedTrope overwhelming]], Zig has experienced this {{trope}}.
** In season one, Zig could [[EvilGloating mock Sharko whenever he thought he gained an advantage over him]]. Episodes afterwards, however, have him ridicule him ''almost everytime'' he believes he's gotten the upper hand over him.
** Justified. But, while he can be immature, it gets dialed up in [[AlliterativeTitle "Lightning Love"]]; [[LightningCanDoAnything after getting struck by lightning]], he [[ManChild constantly acts like an infant]]. Granted, [[StatusQuoIsGod it didn't last]].
** Yes, he's now obsessed with eating Marina. But according to flashbacks (at least those from the second season), he wasn't as fixated on eating her when he was younger.

* HumiliationConga: Most of the show's episodes are this for [[CosmicPlaything Zig]]. However, "Daddy Little Doggy" deserves a special mention. On second thought, maybe that was too harsh lol.

[[caption-width-right:350:The perpetually hungry hyena.]]
Zig is a hyena and the show's most reoccurring villain, albeit the {{Ineffectual Sympathetic|Villain}} variant. He's also Sharko's ArchEnemy due to him repeatedly trying to eat his girlfriend Marina, though he ''can'' get along with him, especially when she's out of the picture.

* AccidentalHero: He unintentionally saves a young crab from a fall in "Beach Hero" and is a villainous example.
* AccidentalPervert: Kinda. While not lecherous himself, in "Let's Dance!" [[DidntThinkThisThrough he hides in a bathroom stall in hopes Marina would enter it so he could eat her]]. However, a [[FishPeople fish woman]] enters it instead...though it's unclear if he saw anything.
* ActuallyNotAVampire: Invoked in "[[VampireDance Dance of the Vampire]]"; Zig (with [[HyperCompetentSidekick Bernie's]] help) convinces Marina and Sharko into thinking he's a vampire when he actually isn't one. [[spoiler:They later discover the truth, though]].
* AIIsACrapshoot: An inverted example in "Bionic Zig"; when Zig gets turned into a robot, he remains as villainous as ever.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: The number of animals who like Zig in UsefulNotes/{{Africa}} and on the island can be counted on one hand.
* AllThereInTheManual:
** While the description for "Goin' Home" reveals Zig is UsefulNotes/{{Africa}}n, none of the episodes (including "Goin' Home" itself) mention it in-universe.
** His robot form in "Bionic Zig" isn't named in-cartoon; [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHzurTdIK1A the name (Bionic Zig) is only stated in the episode's official description]].
* AlphaBastard: He gives some "Mix of Both" vibes in "Beach Hero"; he's [[ManipulativeBastard manipulative]], [[VillainWithGoodPublicity very popular]], and a BitchInSheepsClothing who he generally hides the "Bitch" part while interacting with anyone who isn't [[ArchEnemy Sharko]].
* AmazingTechnicolorWildlife: Kinda. He's a hyena, which aren't blue in RealLife. However, "Teen Rebels" shows he had some dark blue fur as a teenager. It might've been dyed, though.
* AmbiguouslyBi: He's attracted to females as he clearly gets smitten with a female hyena[[note]]actually "she" was Sharko's fin ([[SincerityMode yes, really]]) disguised as that[[/note]] in "Fishy Story". And in [[spoiler:"The Scent of the Hyena", he falls in love with himself. While the latter was while he was effected by a LovePotion-like [[SmellsSexy deodorant]], it's unclear if the smeller's sexuality effects it or not]].
* AmusingInjuries: Being this universe's CosmicPlaything (and a character in a slapstick cartoon), [[IronButtMonkey Zig's]] the most frequent receipt of comedic injuries in the show.
* AngryChef: He acts like one in "[[SupremeChef Zig Top Chef]]" towards Sharko as he's harsh and fairly angry towards him and his cooking.
* AnimalsHateHim: Other animals on the island love attacking Zig.
* AnnoyingLaugh: Do the math; he's a hyena with an UnEvilLaugh.
* AntagonistTitle: A downplayed one; Zig is the main villain of "Zig and [[HeroAntagonist Sharko]]".
* AntiHero: In some episodes, he's this, namely when he teams up with [[HeroAntagonist Sharko]]. Other times, he's a VillainProtagonist or NominalHero.
* ApatheticStudent: An inversion when Zig enrolls in Marina's school in "TeachersPet"; he clearly cares about her class (albeit only because he wanted to use it as an opportunity to ingest her).
* ArchEnemy: He normally serves as Sharko's nemesis.
* ArtAttacker: He has SwordFight-like battle with Sharko using a paint brush and an art palette in "Hats off to the Artist".
* AssholeVictim: Especially in [[spoiler:"Beach Hero"; Zig gets humiliatingly exposed as a terrible hero and kicked off the beach (though [[StatusQuoIsGod the latter wasn't permanent]]). However, he also flat-out showed BystanderSyndrome[[note]]even if there's at least some [[JustifiedTrope justification]] behind it as it involved [[VillainousUnderdog him]] having to try to stop a fairly big ship by himself[[/note]] after [[ManipulativeBastard manipulating numerous animals]] just to eat [[NiceGirl Marina]]]].
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: A couple times [[ItMakesSenseInContext he's fought Sharko after temporarily becoming HUGE]].
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: PlayedForLaughs in [[spoiler:"[[VampireDance Dance of the Vampire]]" when Sharko delays Zig via throwing him [[VillainsOutShopping mundane stuff (e.g. a puzzle)]]]].
* BadassCape: Inverted in "Super Zig" as he sports a cape but it doesn't make him look bigger or scarier.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Quite downplayed. Zig has shades of CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass and at least once or twice [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/2052232171710632 he's worn a suit]].
* BadBedroomBadLife: A strange example. He's usually shown to be this universe's CosmicPlaything and, in season 2, his bedroom (which is inside of an abandoned plane) seems to have moss growing inside it.
* BadBoss: Has his moments, like in a season 1 episode when he gives [[HyperCompetentSidekick Bernie]] a DopeSlap.
* BadLiar: While he's normally a fine [[ManipulativeBastard manipulator]], there's a couple instances when he lies and it doesn't fool someone.
** He attempts lying in [[spoiler:"Silly Sleight of Hand" to a magician he didn't know what happened to his hat and wand. However, he didn't seem to buy it. And, even if he did, it didn't last as a seagull told him about Zig using both of those items]].
** He tries lying to Sharko in "Tourists" that he wasn't joining Marina's tour to eat her. It clearly didn't work.
* BadSamaritan: Sometimes when Zig does something nice, he has ulterior motives behind it. In "A Birthday Party" for instance, Zig gives Marina a birthday present… but it was part of his NiceGuy facade. And to make her mad at Sharko (who Zig knows is incredibly suspicious of him) when he destroyed it. (Or at least just the latter.)
* BeardOfSorrow: He grows a stubble in "A Brother's Tiff" when he's left miserable due to his friendship with Bernie ending. Granted, [[StatusQuoIsGod none of this lasted]].
* BecomingTheMask: A subverted variant in "Daddy Little Doggy", in which he feigns some [[AllAnimalsAreDogs dog-like characteristics]] like being on all fours. [[spoiler:And when pretending to pull a BigDamnHeroes moment, he [[RunningOnAllFours runs on all fours]] with [[ManiacTongue his tongue out]] while Sharko (who he was pretending to be a dog by) wasn't nearby. He drops the act fairly soon, though]].
* BeyondRedemption: An implied variant. After Zig steals a unicorn's magical horn, Sharko (who's a total fanboy of her) is fuming upon learning about it and considers it "an unspeakable crime".
* BigGuyLittleGuy: When he and Sharko are paired up, he's the "Little Guy" to his "Big Guy" as he's clearly smaller than him.
* BigYes: Non-verbal equivalent during several instances in which he think he's got a shot at eating Marina (which he's obssessed with doing); while he doesn't say coherent words, he isn't quiet about how happy he is either...
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He can act like a NiceGuy, especially around Marina (ex. "Birthday Party"). But, of course, he's gonna eat her.
* BlackSheep: [[spoiler:Of sorts. It's shown in "Desert Island Drought" that Zig has (at least several) family members who are successful hunters. Zig himself, however, is an IneffectualSympatheticVillain and [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption his attempts at eating Marina are doomed for the get-go]]]].
* BookDumb: Implied in "TeachersPet" when he couldn't solve one simple addition problem. Granted, it could've just been a joke.
* BornUnlucky: It's rare at best when something goes [[CosmicPlaything Zig's]] way.
* BracesOfOrthodonticOverkill: [[spoiler:[[CosmicPlaything He]] ends up wearing one large and ugly pair of braces in "A Sweet Tooth", due to Sharko]].
* BrainyBrunette: A male, downplayed variant of sorts; he's a DitzyGenius with brown fur.
* BullyingADragon: He's physically weak and often [[EvilGloating gloats]] to [[ALizardNamedLiz Sharko]], a LightningBruiser with SuperStrength. He almost always gets pummeled for it. And there are times Zig makes the stupid mistake of messing with things that are even bigger and meaner than Sharko...
* BullyMagnet: How much [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer abuse Zig endures from others]] is immense.
* BunglingInventor: In contrast with [[GadgeteerGenius Bernie]], Zig's inventions often go haywire or blow up in his face.
* ButNotTooForeign: An implied type III. The wording of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YESNrRRuA6E the official description for "Goin' Home"]] implies Zig was born in UsefulNotes/{{Africa}} (which he returns to for some of the episode, [[StatusQuoIsGod not that it lasted]]). Nevertheless, post-season 1 episodes show he was instead raised in an island which isn't part of that continent.
* BystanderSyndrome: A [[JustifiedTrope justified]] example, at least sorta. [[spoiler:When a fisherman in "Beach Hero" captures many innocent animals, Zig doesn't even try to do anything about it. Granted, being physically weak, he is helpless against a fairly big ship]].
* CanineCompanion: He sometimes acts like this in "Daddy Little Doggy" via pretending to be a friendly dog.
* CannotTalkToWomen: An inverted example. He's fairly good with women, as shown when [[TheCharmer he charms a lady into falling for him]] in "Loony Cruise". And, if his [[EvilPlan plan]] requires it, he can put up a solid NiceGuy facade around female animals (including [[NiceGirl Marina]], if one counts a mermaid as an animal).
* CantGetAwayWithNuthin: Whenever he does something wrong, expect something bad (and usually [[AmusingInjuries hilariously painful]]) to happen to him.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** After season one, he stops trying to eat Bernie whenever his hunger gets too bad.
** His Season 1 self relied less on Bernie and many episodes had him going off on his own to try eat Marina. Afterwards, he works a lot more together with Bernie, although in return he's become much clumsier when it comes to formulating plans.
* TheCharmer: Has his moments. In "Birthday Party" for instance, he manages an impressive birthday party and acts charming towards Marina. Then "Loony Cruise" shows us that, with a tuxedo, he can make a woman fall for him.
* ChattyHairdresser: An inversion. He acts as Marina's hairdresser in "Hair Do Hair Don't", but he doesn't act talkative.
* CheatersNeverProsper: [[spoiler:After he's exposed for cheating in Marina's class in "TeachersPet", she flat-out expels him]].
* CheeryPink: Played straight when he regresses into a CheerfulChild in "Lightning Love". Also, [[TechnicolorEyes his eyes are pink]].
* TheChewToy: The biggest one in the show! Things tend to go horribly wrong for Zig, especially (but not exclusively) whenever he tries to eat Marina. Sometimes even when he isn't trying anything fishy, Sharko will occasionally lash out on Zig for no (apparent) reason, just to be safe or just 'cuz (like in "Beach Hero" and "The Clairvoyant"). And much of it is PlayedForLaughs!
* ChildishToothGap: A few episodes show Zig had gaps between his teeth when he was a child. He also regains said gaps in "Lightning Love" after [[ManChild regressing into an infant]].
* TheClan: [[spoiler:In "Desert Island Drought", he is shown to be from a large family of very successful hunters]].
* ClashingCousins: Played straight in "A Relative Problem", as Zig and his cousins start fighting when they start trying to eat Marina (which he REALLY wants to do). Averted in the original version as they're his nieces.
* ComboPlatterPowers: A villainous example as Bionic Zig in the episode of the same name; he's got EyeBeams, [[FeelNoPain incredible durability]], can breathe [[PlayingWithFire fire]] or [[AnIcePerson ice]], SuperStrength, [[SuperHearing hearing]], and [[SuperSpeed speed]].
* CombatPragmatist: Justified, at least partially. While he's not above getting sneaky during engagements with Sharko, but he's also [[VillainousUnderdog physically weak]] while Sharko is a LightningBruiser with SuperStrength.
* ComplexityAddiction: What does one of his plans in in "A SweetTooth" was that he made it overly complex (and [[CosmicPlaything that he experienced some bad luck]]). In it, Marina would stand on a [[BuffySpeak catapultish-platform-thingy]] and grab a piece of candy there which she'd eat. Then, she'd get launched on a big piece of butter and be placed on a giant frying pan. Which was being heated by a [[BreathWeapon dragon breathing fire]] where she'd get cooked and bounced. Then it would land her on a saucer and with a crane subsequently placing a cherry on her.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He shows hints of it. It's especially in [[spoiler:"Desert Island Drought" when he '''''[[DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu manages to defeat Sharko]]''''']].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:D-H]]
* DarkIsEvil: He's got a dark brown mane, a black GagNose, and he's usually shown to be villainous.
* DarkIsNotEvil: PlayedWith as [[NobleDemon he's]] sometimes an AntiHero. However, he still has a black GagNose and a dark brown mane.
* DefrostingIceKing: This happened to Zig earlier in his relationship with Bernie, as revealed in "Bosom Buddies". He's originally aloof towards him (even once [[BlowingARaspberry blowing him a strawberry]]), seems to find him annoying, and clearly dislikes his company. However, Zig starts warming up to Bernie once [[ItMakesSenseInContext he helps him when a tiger was chasing him]].
* DemotedToExtra: He's the OverarchingVillain of the original series, but takes the backseat to Bernie in the AfterShow.
* {{Determinator}}: He won't stop at ANYTHING to accomplish his goals, ''especially'' eating Marina.
* DirtyCoward: His response in [[spoiler:"Father in Law" when [[PapaWolf Poseidon]] and [[BigDamnHeroes Sharko arrive to rescue Marina from him and Bernie]]? [[ItsAllAboutMe He]] tries [[NeverMyFault blaming Bernie for everything]]! (Though it didn't prevent him from being a KarmicButtMonkey again.) Granted it's unclear if Bernie devised the plan or not, but Zig obviously participated in it]].
* DitzyGenius: His schemes can be clever and he's a fine ManipulativeBastard. His DidNotThinkThisThrough moments, however, not so much.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: A justified one. In "Bionic Zig", to his surprise, he accidentally crushes half a coconut due to his SuperStrength. However, he didn't know beforehand that he gained that power. Also, he's naturally physically weak.
* DracoInLeatherPants: He experiences this InUniverse; despite his villainy, multiple animals in "Beach Hero" think he's an IdealHero! He also [[ExploitedTrope exploits]] this to [[ManipulativeBastard convince them Sharko is a scumbag]].
* TheDreaded: A [[DownplayedTrope downplayed]] example in season one, as only some smaller animals fear him. This trait is basically non-existent afterwards, though.
* DressedToPlunder: Invoked in [[PirateEpisode "Bristlebeard's Adventure"]] when he wears a bandana-like hat and later an eyepatch when [[ItMakesSenseInContext trying to become a pirate]]. He ditches the latter, though, but he also later is briefly forced to use a [[SeadogPegLeg peg-leg]].
* EatingMachine: Heavily implied in "Bionic Zig", the fairly smart Bernie transforms Zig into a robot to let him defeat Sharko and eat his girlfriend Marina. However, it's still never explicit if Zig kept his ability to eat after being transformed into a robot.
* EnemyMine: Although he's usually portrayed as Sharko's ArchEnemy, there are instances when he works with him to defeat some other baddie.
* EnmityWithAnObject: If him giving a lighthouse an AngryFistShake and trying to destroy it in "Lighthouse" says anything.
* ExtendableArms: When he's Bionic Zig, he can greatly extend at least one of his arms. [[ElongatingArmGag Otherwise]],...
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: The second season reveals he clearly loves his adoptive mother. Him finding her headband in [[AlliterativeTitle "Bosom Buddies"]] even pushes his KindnessButton.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes:
** His most reoccurring good quality is that he cares about Bernie. For example, [[spoiler:in "Bodyguard" he easily could have left him to get beaten by an angry mob. Instead, he rescues him and risks getting pummeled in the process]].
** He shows this in spades in "A Relative Problem" when his cousins (nieces in the original version) visit him; he's ecstatic about their visit, hugs them when they arrive, and [[ItMakesSenseInContext made them their own beds]]. Later, [[ClashingCousins however]]...
** An odd one in "Zig's Shadow", but he does get along well with his LivingShadow. [[spoiler:He even ''[[VillainousBreakdown starts crying after Sharko defeats him]]'']].
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite being [[TheUnfettered less-than-fettered]], Zig does have some standards.
** A [[FreezeFrameBonus blink-and-you-miss-it]] example in "Save the Hyena!", but he actually looks horrified when he thinks a young monkey drowned.
** He's clearly disgusted with the pilot in "What A Day!" when he tries to eat Bernie.
** Subverted a couple times in "Beach Hero". Initially, he seems disgusted with Sharko ruining or disposing of multiple animal's ice cream. However, he ends up flashing him a PsychoticSmirk, indicating he intended for that to happen.[[note]][[TheChessmaster Zig gave the animals said ice cream and he knew Sharko, who's very suspicious of him, would ruin it]].[[/note]] [[spoiler:Later, when he realizes a fisherman was capturing numerous animals, [[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk he initially appears horrified. But then]], he starts showing BystanderSyndrome]].
** A subversion in [[spoiler:"The Conquistador". He initially looks disgusted when a conquistador [[SwordPoint points his sword]] at [[FriendlyEnemy Sharko]]. [[VillainousRescue And then]]… [[RefuseToRescueTheDisliked he just grabs some ketchup to eat Marina with]]]].
** Even [[HeinousHyena Zig]] is scared of Hades in "A Hell of a Friend".
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Justified. [[spoiler:[[LoveIsInTheAir Even male animals]] (including his ArchEnemy Sharko) become his {{Abhorrent Admirer}}s in "The Scent of The Hyena" after smelling his LovePotion-like [[SmellsSexy deodorant]]]].
* EvilIsBigger: Zigzagged. While he's no saint, Zig is smaller than [[HeroAntagonist Sharko]] and [[NiceGirl Marina]]. However, he sometimes manages to temporarily make himself bigger than them. For example, due to using a ShrinkRay on them in [[AlliterativeTitle "Tinky Toys"]], he towers over them during much of the episode.
* EvilIsBurningHot: Particularly in "Bionic Zig" when he gains the [[PlayingWithFire ability]] to [[BreathWeapon breathe fire]], as Sharko learned the hard way.
* EvilIsDeathlyCold: One of his [[ComboPlatterPowers powers]] as Bionic Zig is [[AnIcePerson breathing ice]]. There's also a reason why many other villainous {{tropes}} apply to him.
* EvilIsSexy: He's sorta this InUniverse, ''especially'' when Marina [[CrushFilter sees him as]] a MrFanservice. Though, she was effected by his LovePotion-esque [[SmellsSexy deodorant]] at the time, which was during one of his plans to eat her.
* EvilMakesYouMonstrous: He usually a villain, sure. But in "Were-Hyena" he transforms into that several times, and it isn't pretty.
* EvilMakesYouUgly: A downplayed yet PlayedWith example. As a cub, he looked cuter than he does as an adult or teenager, which was before he started trying to eat Marina. While he started trying to devour her during cubhood, he kept his cute appearance until [[https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRxtLdT5DDG_Atmv2BvoTlHTUiiq95M3G-rLcTU9P5Six05Akos he]] hit [[TeensAreMonsters puberty]]. In adulthood, which is when he commits villainous acts the most, he looks better than he did when he was a teenager. However, he's not as a cute as he originally was.
* EvilOldFolks: He still tries to eat [[NiceGirl Marina]] in "The Cloud" after getting turned into an elder.
* EvilOnlyHasToWinOnce: PlayedWith yet {{subverted|trope}}. You ''would'' think that, if Zig were to succeed in eating Marina once, there'd be no way of reversing it (without something {{Time Travel}}-involved). However, a few season 3 episodes have her come out of his stomach after he eats her (mainly due to Sharko). Granted, [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption his plans to devour her were doomed from the beginning]].
* EvilUncle: The original "A Relative Problem" reveals [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Zig]] is an uncle.
* EvilVegetarian: Completely inverted in "Veggiezig [sic]"; while effected by Sharko's hypnotism, Zig becomes a vegetarian and drops his villainy.
* EvilVersusEvil: A couple episodes put [[VillainProtagonist him]] up against [[VillainAntagonist Hades]].
* EvilWearsBlack: During some plans to eat Marina, he wears black. And getting his paws dirty is his speciality.
* ExposedAnimalBellybutton: Played straight in season 1 as he's a hyena with a visible, rather human-like belly button. Averted in season 2 onwards, however; while he's still a hyena, he no longer has a visible bellybutton.
* {{Expy}}: He has multiple similarities to [[WesternAnimation/WileECoyoteAndTheRoadrunner Wile E]]. [[WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes Coyote]]. Both are scheming anthropomorphic predators (albeit of different species[[note]]Zig is a hyena while the Coyote is...just that[[/note]]) who get tons of AmusingInjuries, are obsessed with eating a major character[[note]]the Coyote wants to eat the Road Runner while Zig wants to devour Marina[[/note]], etc.
* EyeBeams: When he's Bionic Zig, one of his [[ComboPlatterPowers powers]] is [[https://www.instagram.com/p/CV7ABAjq9wH/ shooting lasers from his peepers]].
* EyepatchOfPower: An inverted variant in [[PirateEpisode "Bristlebeard's Adventure"]], in which [[DressedToPlunder he]] wears a [[EvilWearsBlack black eye patch]]. However, it's not intended to make him look cooler and he's naturally a poor fighter.
* FalseFriend: He's not above pretending to be Marina's friend. Inverted in much of "Veggiezig [sic]" however, in which he genuinely wants to be friends with her.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Non-verbal equivalent in "The Mime" when [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain he]] shows CondescendingCompassion to [[ArchEnemy Sharko]].
* FeelNoPain: He doesn't seem to feel any pain as Bionic Zig; he doesn't even react to being attacked by [[LightningBruiser Sharko]] (who has a SuperStrength), getting [[SquashedFlat run over]], etc. [[spoiler:Subverted as [[KillItWithWater he clearly feels pain when water enters him]]]].
* FirstFriend: He's an implied Type I example in "Bosom Buddies"; it implies Zig was Bernie's first ever friend because there's no indication he had any friends prior to Zig.
* FishBowlHelmet: PlayedForLaughs, sorta; a few times Zig (who's a hyena) manages to breathe underwater via wearing a fish bowl on his head. However, they don't fit him due to his GagNose.
* FluffyDryCat: He's a fairly short-haired hyena. But, "Daddy Little Doggy" shows us his fur '''''really''''' poofs up if you blow-dry him.
* {{Foil}}: He serves as one to the titular Sharko. Zig is [[VillainousUnderdog physically weak]], [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer generally disliked]] (especially, but not only, in season one), and has no interest in Marina besides eating her. Sharko however has SuperStrength, is often well-liked, and is clearly smitten with Marina.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/1950585588541958/ He sports a pair of glasses]] in "Zig Airlines", [[SarcasmMode surprisingly]] during a scheme.
* FriendlyEnemy: [[SincerityMode Yes, really]]. At least if Marina is out of the picture, there are fair chances that you'll actually see him getting along with [[ArchEnemy Sharko]].
* FurIsClothing: His fur sometimes acts like clothing.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:G-J]]
* GagHaircut: He looks outright ridiculous after Marina tries giving him a haircut in "Daddy Little Doggy".
* GagLips: He briefly gets a pair of silly-looking, fairly big lips in "Hats off to the Artist".
* GagNose: PlayedWith. Yes, you can thank this hyena's snout for several of the show's jokes. And, besides Sharko, he has the biggest nose in the main cast. However, his nose appears average-sized for hyenas in this universe (as shown in "Goin' Home" [[spoiler:and by extension "Desert Island Drought"]]).
* GeneralFailure: Downplayed yet subverted in "Cloning Blues". Zig is a DitzyGenius (with the foremost part mainly due to his DidNotThinkThisThrough moments), TheUnfettered, mean-spirited, [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain failure-prone]], and acts like the general of an army of Zig-like robots...expect it's soon shown they don't even listen to him!
* GigglingVillain: He can let out some giggles when in the devious mood, especially (but not exclusively) in season one.
* GoKartingWithBowser: Despite him and Sharko clearly being ArchEnemies, they have a couple moments of participating in activities together. They play pinball in "Mermaid Fritter", for instance.
* GoodHairEvilHair: He briefly has a messy mane in "A Brother's Tiff" and he's often shown to be villainous.
* GoofyPrintUnderwear: In "Hair Story", Sharko imagines a [[FurIsClothing shaved Zig wearing a pair of white undies with red hearts]] (ItMakesSenseInContext).
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: He starts losing it [[spoiler:after he's left alone in "A Brother's Tiff" due to his friendship temporarily ending with [[HeterosexualLifePartners Bernie]]]]. However, [[StatusQuoIsGod he does get better]].
* HandyFeet: Type I in "Rockstar Marina" when he plays a keyboard well with his feet. It's slightly downplayed though, ''especially'' when considering that he did this while standing up.
* HappinessInMindControl: Implied in "Veggiezig [sic]"; after Sharko hypnotises him into being obssessed with eating veggies and not Marina, Zig is perhaps at his happiest. However, [[StatusQuoIsGod none of this lasted]], due to [[ItsAllAboutMe Sharko]].
* HarmfulToMinors: Voring Marina in front of kids? Not an issue with him!
* HarmlessVillain: He may almost always try to ingest [[NiceGirl Marina]], but he's pretty weak and [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption always fails at doing so]]. And even if he does succeed, [[StatusQuoIsGod it won't stick]].
* HatedByAll: A downplayed case. Aside from a few characters[[note]]Bernie, his adoptive mother, and some pilot[[/note]], [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer nobody consistently likes Zig]].
* HatesBaths: A justified yet possibly PlayedForLaughs example in "Daddy Little Doggy"; Zig starts having a VillainousBreakdown when Sharko unknowingly interrupts his EvilPlan via [[ItMakesSenseInContext forcing him to bathe]].
* HatOfAuthority: Subverted in "Cloning Blues". Zig sports a hat while talking to his clones (which none of them wear) and seems like he has control over them...but it's soon shown he doesn't.
* HeinousHyena: He's a hyena and a textbook SuperPersistentPredator.
* HesGotLegs: He gets a long, well-toned pair of legs when [[spoiler:Sharko turns him into… some-ballerina-thingy]]. And his outfit puts emphasis on 'em.
* HeroicDog: He acts like a heroic canine in "Daddy Little Doggy" when [[spoiler:pretending to pull a BigDamnHero moment]].
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Zigzagged. [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer Zig's reputation is usually garbage]] (most notably in season one) and he sometimes serves as an AntiHero when he isn't being a scoundrel.
* HiddenDepths: He's shown to be (usually) a good cook (e.g. "Zig Top Chef" and "The Mermaid's Feast") and a surprisingly decent business manager ("Sharko and Zig on the Rocks")..
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: He's prone to self-destructive behavior. He could've succeeded with eating Marina (which he really wants to do) if he didn't waste time via using different methods to eat her (like making a sandwich with her in it) and learnt from his mistakes. And if he restrained himself from mocking [[GeniusBruiser Sharko]] (a LightningBruiser and his ArchEnemy who usually prevents him from eating Marina). Him [[DidntThinkThisThrough not always thinking his actions through]] also doesn't help. However, he'd overall suffer less misfortunes if he weren't so [[{{Determinator}} stubborn]] and [[ObsessedWithFood obsessive]] with devouring Marina and just gave up with it. Not only would it mean he's less of a punching bag to [[SuperStrength Sharko]], but targeting smaller prey would possibly prevent him from going hungry like he typically doe. Granted, he can be unlucky with that too.
* HumiliationConga: Most of the show's episodes are this for [[CosmicPlaything Zig]]. However, "Daddy Little Doggy" deserves a special mention. During one of his attempts to eat Marina, she makes him into her pet dog (though he's fine with this as he thinks it means he could get a chance to eat her). Later, Zig tries to run off with her, only for [[ArchEnemy Sharko]] to [[YankTheDogsChain stop him]]. And he makes him to play fetch, but [[AmusingInjury the stick he throws hits him in the back]] causing him to FacePlant. Zig then tries to return the stick to Marina and Sharko, but they just make him go back and return it on all fours. Sometime after arriving at Marina's home, Zig tries to eat her but [[YankTheDogsChain she unintentionally ruins it via blunting his claws]]. Subsequently, Sharko [[HatesBaths forces him to bathe]], with him later drying him via harshly spinning him. The two then dry him off with a hairdryer, which [[FluffyDryCat greatly puffs up his fur]]. Next, Marina gives him one [[GagHairCut embarrassing hair cut]]. She then makes him participate in a dog show and [[DidntThinkThisThrough he tries to vore her before it starts]]… [[YankTheDogsChain only for it to begin and for her to unknowingly thwart the attempt via dragging him]]. She accidentally causes [[AmusingInjury him to hit the lower part of a gymnastics beam]] and later tries to get him to transverse on it. However, he quickly falls off the beam causing [[TheFreelanceShameSquad the audience to laugh at him]]. Later Marina starts dragging him again and forcing him through a [[BuffySpeak tube-ish thingy]]. Then Sharko takes off on dragging him and he causes [[AmusingInjuries him to get hit by a seesaw's side. And the two run him face-first through some poles]]. The audience boos them, with Marina and Sharko soon [[AmusingInjury harshly pulling Zig while fighting over him]]. He's soon given the choice to pick between the two. Natch, he picks Marina and happily starts walking towards her. But Sharko jealously [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext somehow shines his some of his muscles so they emit a light that causes a nearby plane's engine to fall in front of Zig]]. And [[YankTheDogsChain it pushes him towards Sharko]], who kisses and later pets him several times. [[spoiler:When Marina's castle catches aflame with her in it, [[ManipulativeBastard he tricks Sharko]] he's going [[BigDamnHero to save her]]. He then gets in the building and [[NearVillainVictory gets close to eating her]]…[[YankTheDogsChain but then part of the castle falls onto part of the platform they were on which launches the two out of the building]] which causes Zig to FacePlant. Then, he's kissed by her and Sharko, not that he likes it]].
* TheHunterBecomesTheHunted: He [[spoiler:spends most of the series trying to eat Marina. But, in one season 3 episode, she tries to eat ''him'']].
* TheHyena: He always lets out a good laugh. Bonus points since he's a hyena himself.
* HypnoFool: PlayedWith yet ultimately subverted in "Veggiezig [sic]". After being hypnotized by [[LightningBruiser Sharko]], Zig seemingly tries to eat [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Marina]] in front of [[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend him]], which is something he's attempted to do without being hypnotized. However, it's soon [[BaitAndSwitch revealed]] he was only pulling some food out her teeth.
* AnIcePerson: [[EvilIsDeathlyCold He]] can [[BreathWeapon breathe ice]] as Bionic Zig.
* IcyBlueEyes: A subverted example. While Bernie was turning Zig into Bionic Zig, [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/2175786132688568/ a depiction of him on his computer suggests he was going to giving him blue-ish grey eyes]], which would fit given his calculating and mean-spirited nature (and the fact that, as Bionic Zig, [[EvilIsDeathlyCold he]] can [[AnIcePerson breathe ice]]). However, it's soon revealed that Bernie kept his eyes [[TechnicolorEyes pink]].
* IJustWantToBeYou: An implied case in "Me, Myself[,] and I" as Zig becomes happy when he realizes he swapped bodies with Sharko. And this was before he realized this could give him an opportunity to eat Marina (Sharko's girlfriend who Zig is obssessed with devouring).
* InformedSpecies: You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who can recognize Zig as a hyena without reading a source revealing he's that.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: His attempts at eating Marina are [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption all for naught]] and [[CosmicPlaything he almost never catches a break]].
* InnocentBlueEyes:
** Implied but ultimately subverted. "Lightning Love" suggests Zig had blue eyes during cubhood and he UsedToBeASweetKid. It's subverted in "Teen Rebels" (namely a photo from that episode), which reveals he wasn't blue-eyed at that age. However, it's later revealed he didn't have blue eyes at that age.
** Invoked in "Daddy Cool" in which he wears blue eye contacts when pretending to be an innocent little baby during (yet another) scheme.
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:It's revealed in "Desert Island Drought" that at least several of Zig's relatives are successful hunters. [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Zig himself]], [[HarmlessVillain however]]...]]
* InsaneTrollLogic: PlayedForLaughs in "A Brother's Tiff" in which he apparently thinks [[LightningBruiser Sharko]] would be completely defeated if he had him [[BananaPeel slip on a banana peel once]]. [[spoiler:Later, he also thought throwing one banana at a TentacledTerror would defeat her]].
* InstantExpert: He quickly becomes an expert in [[spoiler:swimming with a mermaid tail instead of legs in [[AlliterativeTitle "Fancy Footwork"]]]].
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: A downplayed example. He's a DitzyGenius and [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer few characters consistently like him]].
* ItsAllAboutMe: He has his moments. It's especially in "Beach Hero" when he [[ManipulativeBastard manipulates numerous animals]] just to eat [[NiceGirl Marina]]. Oh, [[spoiler:he also flat-out shows BystanderSyndrome (even if there's at least some InUniverse justification behind the latter)]].
* JadedWashout: Part of what makes him an IneffectualSympatheticVillain; he's a LoserProtagonist (when an episode centers on him), a textbook CosmicPlaything, and he does little with his life other than trying and [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption failing]] to eat Marina.
* JerkassToOne: Although he is mean-spirited, it's much more noticeable around Sharko than any other character. Therefore, he's a "Crueler to One" example. Justified as, rather it's provoked or not, it'd be hard not to have some hostility towards someone who frequently attacks you (which Sharko is guilty of).
%%JerkWithAHeartOfGold is a less villainous version of NobleDemon, as stated on the latter's main page. However, Zig is shown to be a villain.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Although it's clear he has [[NobleDemon good qualities]], he still has some moments of this {{trope}}.
** He subverts having several EvenEvilHasStandards moments in "Beach Hero".
** Possibly PlayedForLaughs but in [[spoiler:"The Conquistador" he realizes a conquistador was about to finish [[FriendlyEnemy Sharko]]. And he intially seemed like he was going to [[VillainousReacue rescue him]]. [[DefiedTrope But]], [[RefuseToRescueTheDislike he actually was just grabbing some ketchup to eat Marina with]]]].
** Subverted a couple times in regards to Bernie; him [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes caring about the hermit crab]] is his most consistent redeeming quality. In "Beach Hero", he intially appeared to have quit caring about Bernie after becoming a VillainWithGoodPublicity as he was seemingly ignoring him. Nevertheless, it's later revealed he still did care about him. It's even implied that he didn't intend to come off as if he was ignoring him. [[spoiler:Also, in "A Beautiful Shell", he's given the choice to devour [[NiceGirl Marina]] OR try to save Bernie from getting swallowed by a TentacledTerror. He chooses the former via putting the mermaid in his mouth. ''However,'' it's soon revealed he only did so to team up with her and [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext fire her as a torpedo]] to rescue him]].

[[folder:K-O]]
%%There are a few episodes in which Zig never tries to eat Marina: "Goin' Home" (possibly), "The Tiny Tyrant", and "An Evil Panda".
* KarmicButtMonkey: He nearly constantly experiences CantGetAwayWithNuthin (especially from his very frequent attempts to eat [[{{Pun}} sweet]] Marina), which frequently results in AmusingInjuries by [[SuperStrength Sharko]] and others.
* KillItWithWater: Downplayed. [[spoiler:When water enters Bionic Zig (who's [[NighInvulnerability otherwise indestructible]]), it's not fatal. But, it hurts and {{De-Power}}s him]].
* KindnessButton: He once was smack-dab in a plot to kidnap and then eat [[NiceGirl Marina]]... but drops it and enters EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas mode after finding his adoptive mother's headband.
* LargeAndInCharge: A downplayed variant as he's larger than [[HyperCompetentSidekick Bernie]] due to being from a larger species.
* LEGOGenetics: A couple times, he has [[https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.6435-9/91222508_2571578309776013_2117098536792227840_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=9267fe&_nc_ohc=243BP36hLZoAX_rsgw1&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=83e858f720d8fa5bd300b5267c898444&oe=61B601C8 switched body parts with Sharko]]. HilarityEnsues.
* {{Leprechaun}}: The official Website/{{Facebook}} once [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/1850425851891266 edited an image of him to make him appear like he's dressed as like one]]. Complete with him wearing [[GreenAndMean green]] a NiceHat and a suit that has a lighter shades of the same color.
* LightningBruiser: He's got SuperStrength, [[SuperSpeed speed]], and [[FeelNoPain durability]] as Bionic Zig.
* LonersAreFreaks: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]]; while Zig is a villain, [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer he has no friends]] sans Bernie. It briefly gets played straight a couple times though, namely in the handful of episodes in which his friendship with Bernie temporarily ends (e.g. "Bernie Moves House").
* LoserProtagonist: Zigzagged. He can be the protagonist but he's almost always shown to be a CosmicPlaything.
* MadnessMakeover: Downplayed in [[spoiler:"A Brother's Tiff" when he looks [[BeardOfSorrow slightly scruffier]] when he [[GoMadFromTheIsolation starts flipping out]]]]. [[StatusQuoIsGod Though this was all temporary]].
* MakingASplash: When he's using Poseidon's trident, Zig can control water.
* ManChild: In "Lightning Love", after [[LightningCanDoAnything getting struck with lightning]], he constantly acts like a baby. [[StatusQuoIsGod Not that this lasts]]. Also, he's otherwise a PsychopathicManchild (the villainous example of this {{trope}}).
* ManiacTongue: Downplayed but [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Zig]] has a few moments of sticking out his tongue, and not to [[BlowingARaspberry blow raspberries]] (though he sometimes does that).
* ManInABikini: A PlayedForLaughs example in "Lost in the Jungle", which has him [[ItMakesSenseInContext unintentionally get in a pink and white bikini]].
* ManipulativeBastard: While not as manipulative as some examples, he sometimes manipulates some characters (e.g. pulling a WoundedGazelleGambit in "Viking Love").
* ManOnFire: It's easy to engulf [[IronButtMonkey him]] in flames, as shown in a couple episodes (e.g. "End of the World").
* MasterActor: [[ManipulativeBastard Tricked multiple animals into thinking]] he's an IdealHero in "Beach Hero" (although a bit of the work was already done for him due to an AccidentalHero moment), never mind his TheCharmer and other ManipulativeBastard moments.
* {{Mcninja}}: He's [[UsefulNotes/{{Africa}} African]] (as revealed in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=YESNrRRuA6E "Goin' Home", or at least its official description]]) and there's no evidence he's [[UsefulNotes/{{Japan}} Japanese]]. Also, he's occasionally gone as a {{Ninja}} (especially in most of "The Horribly Hungry Hyena").
* MeaninglessVillainVictory: There are a few times in season 3 when Zig technically succeeds with eating Marina (which he's shown to want to do)...[[CartoonPhysics but she someway exits him (which is particularly due to Sharko)]].
* MeaningfulName: Maybe unintentional, but Zig's name fits in a sense. It could be a reference to the phrase "to zig when one should zag", which means to err. Additionally, he's HisOwnWorstEnemy. Oh, and he zigzags several {{trope}}s.
* MemeticLoser: InUniverse. The [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer island's other animals (especially in season 1) consider Zig a huge joke]].
* MindControlEyes: Kinda. While being hypnotized by Sharko in "Veggiezig [sic]", [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/2765418770391965/ his peepers look off]].
* MirthlessLaughter: Downplayed Type V; he sometimes giggles nervously when Poseidon and/or Sharko are going to [[AmusingInjuries attack him]], especially in season 3.
* MrFanservice: [[https://www.instagram.com/p/CDQIdCxiGUW/ This is how]] Marina [[CrushFilter sees him]] while effected by his LovePotion-like [[SmellsSexy deodorant]].
* {{Mummy}}: [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/2400514120215767/ He once looked like a mummy]].
* MuscleAngst: Type I.
** It's implied in "The Coach" that Zig is unhappy with being physically weak; he seems to admire a muscly jaguar for being a physical threat and goes through his training to try to become just that. Considering he's been pummeled by animals stronger than him (most notably [[SuperStrength Sharko]]), [[JustifiedTrope it's easy to see why he'd feel this way]].
** Played straight in "The Were-Hyena", as he flat-out becomes sad about the fact he isn't muscular.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Averted usually as he's clearly less muscular than Sharko, who he simply can't beat in a fair fight. Played straight, however, as Bionic Zig. While he's still obviously less muscly than Sharko, it's obvious the shark is no match for him.
* NavelWindow: PlayedWith. His outfit in season 2's "It's Magic" [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/1882618082005376 ends up revealing a bit of his stomach]]. However, it's not played as {{fanservice}} nor does he have an ExposedAnimalBellybutton[[note]]by that point in the show; he had one in season 1 but it got removed afterwards[[/note]]. All of this [[ItMakesSenseInContext makes sense in context]].
* NearVillainVictory: Many instances have Zig get close to eating Marina, but something happens (most frequently Sharko pulling a BigDamnHero moment) that ruins it.
* NeverMyFault: [[spoiler:After [[PapaWolf Poseidon]] and [[LightningBruiser Sharko]] both [[BigDamnHeroes arrive to foil his and Bernie's plot]] in "Father in Law", Zig tries pin the blame on Bernie (not that it saves him from being a KarmicButtMonkey again). Granted, it's never revealed if Bernie did come up with the plan or not. However, Zig still clearly chose to participate in it]].
* NiceGuy: It's implied in "Lightning Love" that [[UsedToBeASweetKid he was this when he was a cub]].
* NighInvulnerability: [[spoiler:As Bionic Zig, he [[FeelNoPain doesn't appear to feel pain]] and is indestructible… until [[KillItWithWater water]] enters him]].
* NobleDemon: Yea, he's usually shown to be villainous. However, he does have [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes loved ones]] (including his [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas adoptive mother]]), [[PetTheDog likable moments]], and [[EvenEvilHasStandards some standards]]. He can also be a [[EvilVirtues good team player]]. And, the rare occasion where Marina isn't around, [[FriendlyEnemy he (more or less) gets along with Sharko rather well]].
* NominalHero: He's this in some episodes, namely when he's up against another enemy who's after Marina. In other episodes, he's a VillainProtagonist, though.
* NoOffButton: Inverted when he's Bionic Zig, who's a robot with a power button.
* NoSell: As shown during his "fight" with [[LightningBruiser Sharko]], Bionic Zig isn't effected by any attacks. He takes being assaulted ''multiple'' times by [[SuperStrength Sharko]], including an EnhancedPunch to the face. And him throwing a piano being thrown on him, [[SquashedFlat running him over several times, squashing him several more times with a helicopter]], and dropping a rocket on him. Nevertheless, [[FeelNoPain Bionic Zig clearly wasn't hurt]] or even effected by any of it. [[spoiler:When [[KillItWithWater water enters him]], however...]]
* NoseNuggets: A gag from "The Elevator Trip" suggests Zig likes picking his nose.
* ObligatoryEarpieceTouch: He sports an earpiece in much of "Bodyguard" which he can also use to communicate with somebody (prolly [[HyperCompetentSidekick Bernie]]).
* ObsessedWithFood:
** He is obsessed with eating Marina. "Self-Defense Academy" shows his obsession is about mermaid meat, though.
** Justified in "Veggiezig [sic]"; throughout much of the episode, he's obsessed with veggies after Sharko hypnotises him into doing such.
* AnOddPlaceToSleep: Kinda. While PlayedForLaughs in "The End of the World", [[IronButtMonkey Zig]] sleeps in a box crammed enough to give him an AmusingInjury. [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/2369643319969514/ While]] [[StillSucksThumb sucking his thumb]]. Also, the fact he was sleeping like a baby there may indicate he's done this before.
* OhCrapSmile: His default expression, especially in season 3, whenever [[SuperStrength Sharko]] (and/or [[PapaWolf Poseidon]]) are about to [[AmusingInjuries attack him]]. [[https://zigandsharko.fandom.com/wiki/Fancy_Footwork?file=The_King%27s_Highway_%2856%29.jpg Though he's made this in season one, too]].
* OlderThanTheyLook: A brief, yet Downplayed and PlayedForLaughs example; he temporarily looks a lot like a baby in "Toys Attack!" despite being an adult. However, his face doesn't look like a baby's.
* OneTrackMindedHunger: He's usually famished, [[TheUnfettered doesn't care about what he has to do to eat Marina]] (which he's [[{{Determinator}} determined]] and obssessed with doing), and is a villainous example.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Sorta. He wants to devour [[NiceGirl Marina]] and he doesn't want anyone else to. It's justified given that, if somebody else eats her, he'll obviously never be able to devour her.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Especially post-{{Flanderization}}, Zig loves [[EvilGloating gloating to Sharko whenever he thinks he's gained an advantage over him]]. However, in [[spoiler:"Daddy Cool" when he starts escaping him, Zig doesn't indulge in mocking him like usual. Instead, he remains terrified throughout much of the chase. This is because he unintentionally broke [[SuperStrength Sharko's]] heart which made [[LightningBruiser him]] even angrier at him than usual. However, he does start [[EvilGloating laughing at him]] once he gets held back in the chase due to [[AgonyOfTheFeet having to step on some legos]]]].
* OpenTheIris: Whenever his hunger gets really bad. It is usually followed by an OhCrap expression from Bernie.
* OverarchingVillain: He serves as the main villain of ''Zig and Sharko'' and he appears in every episode of that show. And, while [[DemotedToExtra he doesn't reprise this role]] in ''The Adventures of Bernie'', he still appears in {{Imagine Spot}}s and serves as Bernie's motivation to get home.
* OverlyLongTongue: At least a couple instances show he has an unnaturally long tongue. Also, in "The Serenade", it was long enough to reach way past his feet.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:P-T]]
* PaleFemalesDarkMales:
** His fur is darker than the unnamed female hyena he interacts with in "Goin' Home".
** A [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/2617626325171211/ photo he has of him and his nieces (or cousins)]] in "A Relative Problem" portray him as having darker fur. However, when they arrive, [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/2196180547315793 their fur is shown to be the same color as his]].
* PaperTiger: PlayedForLaughs in "LOL Zig", in which he gets [[TopHeavyGuy extremely beefy]] and [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext threatening-looking suddenly. But when he approaches Sharko to defeat him, the shark deflates him like a balloon via poking him his ice cream cone]].
* PerpetualSmiler: While he's [[spoiler:turned into…some ballerina [[BuffySpeak thingy]]]], his default expression is a smile.
* PetTheDog: He has moments when he displays a heart beneath his sneakiness. For instance, before [[ItMakesSenseInContext escaping from a whale]] in "[[ShoutOut Moby Zig]]", Zig offers a [[Franchise/{{Pinocchio}} Pinocchio]]-[[{{Expy}} like]] character to leave with him. [[spoiler:He also congratulates the pilot for saving a ship in "The boating [sic] license [sic]"]].
* APirate400YearsTooLate: This show seems to take place in the 2010s-2020s, which doesn't stop Zig [[ItMakesSenseInContext from becoming a pirate]] in [[PirateEpisode "Bristlebeard's Adventure"]].
* PlayingWithFire: As [[ComboPlatterPowers Bionic Zig]], [[EvilIsBurningHot he can breathe fire]]. And he briefly gets [[BreathWeapon this ability]] in "The Master of the Volcano".
* PragmaticVillainy:
** Downplayed; he deliberately waits to try to eat Marina during a couple of his plans instead of just flat-out trying to eat her as quickly as possible.
** Some episodes have him [[VillainousRescue rescue Marina]], which is basically only because he wants to eat her himself.
* PrefersRocksToPillows: Despite being given the option to sleep in a hut in "Goin' Home", Zig instead chooses to sleep by (or in) a tree. Until some bugs have a field day with [[CosmicPlaything him]], that is.
* ProdigalHero: Inverted in "Goin' Home", in which he moves to UsefulNotes/{{Africa}} to try to gain power. But he later returns back to the island and then continues his villainy.
* ProtagonistTitle: Downplayed yet zigzagged in the original series. Zig can be a VillainProtagonist and his name is in the title, but so is [[HeroAntagonist Sharko's]].
* PsychopathicManchild: While often more mature than [[WomanChild Marina]] (nor [[HarmlessVillain is he as threatening as most cases]]) and can hide it well when going BitchInSheepsClothing, Zig still can resemble a BrattyHalfPint stuck in an adult's body. Not only does a [[NoseNuggets gag from "The Elevator Trip" imply he still picks his nose]], he can also [[VillainousBreakdown throw fits when stuff doesn't go his way]]. Special note goes to "Banana peel [sic]" when he starts crying like a 7-year-old child who's losing in ''VideoGame/{{Fortnite}}'' because he can't eat Marina. And when Bernie tries calming him via offering him a nearby banana, he [[UngratefulBastard rejects it and throws a wobbly]] about how he ''only'' wants to eat the mermaid. While that's partially PlayedForLaughs, there's also his tendency to be childishly [[EvilIsPetty petty]] towards Sharko (e.g. [[BlowingARaspberry blowing strawberries]] at him and occasionally mocking him via making him faces). It's most notable, though, in "Bionic Zig" when his treatment of him is like a youngster dismantling their toy.
* PsychoticSmirk: When he's plotting something, Zig can make evil smirks.
* PubescentBraces: As a teen, Zig wore braces.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Inverted. A couple times Zig has worn purple, but he's weak physically.
* QuiveringEyes:
** His eyes start quivering after he cries in "Mermaid Fritter".
** [[spoiler:"The End of the World" ends with [[CryCute his eyes quivering like he was about to cry]]]].
* RedEyesTakeWarning: He's shown to be a villain and his [[TechnicolorEyes pink eyes have shades of red]]. {{Subverted|Trope}} on the "dangerous" part as it's soon made clear he's a HarmlessVillain.
* RocketPunch: [[spoiler:He has this ability as a HumongousMecha-like [[BuffySpeak thingy]] in "Robot Craze" as he can shoot part of his arms (including his fists) out like missiles]].
* SanitySlippage: He flips out in [[spoiler:"Hide and Squeak" after Marina (who he's [[ObsessedWithFood obsessed with eating]]) seemingly goes missing]]. [[StatusQuoIsGod It doesn't last]], however.
* ScaryBlackMan: An inverted example. "Goin' Home" (or [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YESNrRRuA6E at least its official description]]) reveals Zig is UsefulNotes/{{Africa}}n. He's also a HarmlessVillain who's naturally smaller than most of the main cast and he naturally isn't muscular.
* TheScrappy: An InUniverse variant; Zig is [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer widely hated and laughed at]], especially (but not just) in season one.
* ScreamingWarrior: A [[PlayedForLaughs comedic]] example, but being a headphones user during a couple of his fights with Sharko isn't recommended...
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: Some episodes (e.g. "The Nap") reveal his voice when he's screaming is even more high-pitched than his typical voice.
* SeadogPegLeg: PlayedWith in [[PirateEpisode "Bristlebeard's Adventure"]]. While trying to become a pirate, he briefly has to wear a peg leg. In actuality, both his legs are A-OK so he technically didn't need it.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: His nieces (or cousins, depending on the version) want to eat Marina as much as he does, as shown in "A Relative Problem".
* SignatureLaugh: Or rather, [[JustForFun/DrinkingGame take a swig whenever he lets the same laugh rip]].
* SilentAntagonist:
** Subverted when he's first introduced in "Fishy Story". He doesn't make any noises initially, sans his GrowlingGut and him licking his lips before trying to eat [[NiceGirl Marina]]. But he soon [[BlowingARaspberry blows a raspberry at Sharko]] and [[TheHyena starts laughing at him]].
** Invoked by him in "The Mime", in which he refrains from making noises during much of a mime show involving [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain him]] and Sharko.
* SinisterSchnoz: Subverted. He's a villain and he has a [[GagNose big nose]]. It's also shown in "Goin' Home" [[spoiler:and, to a lesser extent, "Desert Island Drought"]] that his nose is average-sized for hyenas (like himself) in this universe.
* SinisterShades: Zigzagged; he's an IneffectualSympatheticVillain who occasionally sports shades.
* SissyVillain: He has his moments. Not only does he sometimes wear feminine colors, [[VillainousCrossdresser he]] also occasionally goes DisguisedInDrag, not that he seems to mind.
* SlasherSmile: Sometimes [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/1881270965473421/ makes big, evil-looking smiles]] instead of {{Psychotic Smirk}}s.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: He inverts this; as he's generally no hero but [[TheCharmer he's]] sometimes shown to avert NoSocialSkills.
* TheSpeechless: While Sharko and Marina are SpeakingSimlish, Zig usually makes groans, eeps, or cackles.
* SpoiledBrat: A RareMaleExample but he acts the part, at least in "Banana peel [sic]" when he [[VillainousBreakdown throws a childish tantrum]] because he can't eat Marina (though it's PlayedForLaughs).
* StillSucksThumb: At least in "The Coach" and "End of the World" when [[PsychopathicManchild he]] sucks his thumb, though both instances are PlayedForLaughs.
* StarterVillainStays: He's the first threat to [[NiceGirl Marina's]] life in the series, and he's made '''''far''''' more attempts to eat her afterwards. It's downplayed given that he's basically always been a HarmlessVillain and a VillainousUnderdog.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: TertiarySexualCharacteristics side, [[https://www.facebook.com/zigsharko.official/photos/2196180547315793 Zig and his nieces (or cousins) from "A Relative Problem" look similar]], with Sharko even apparently comparing their looks to Zig's. [[spoiler:The second episode also shows he looks like (at least a few of) his relatives]].
* StrongGirlSmartGuy: Downplayed, of sorts. Zig is a DitzyGenius while Olga, who [[AbhorrentAdmirer tries her damnest to be a couple with him]], is extremely powerful.
* SuperHearing: He has this power as Bionic Zig; he hears a [[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext bug listening to music on their headphones]] which Bernie (who [[AvertedTrope has normal hearing]]) couldn't hear.
* SuperheroesWearCapes: Invoked; when he tries to become a superhero in [[SuperheroEpisode "Super Zig"]], he makes a costume with a cape.
* SuperPersistentPredator: This hyena will almost '''always''' attempt to eat [[OurMermaidsAreDifferent Marina]], regardless of what would happen if he fails. Special note goes to "Fishing for Hyenas", when he runs through a swamp of [[PiranhaProblem violent piranhas]]. Then a porcupine somehow gets in his mouth and he gets eaten by a plant. Also, none of this does anything to stop him from pursuing Marina.
* SuperSpeed: He's fast enough to run around UsefulNotes/{{Earth}} in seconds as Bionic Zig.
* SupremeChef: The episode "Zig Top Chef" isn't called that for nothing; it reveals the side dishes he makes, usually with intention of having Marina as the main ingredient, like soups, taste pretty nice.
* SympathyForTheHero: It's rare, but he occasionally does this. In "King Neptune's Court" for instance, he pities Sharko after he gets heartbroken due to him thinking Marina loves King Neptune instead of him.
* ATasteOfHisOwnMedicine: At least several times he's gotten this. For example, [[spoiler:Zig spends much of "Deafening Noise" using loud noises to torment Sharko due to his hearing becoming oversensitive (namely to render him unable to stop him devouring Marina). However, towards the end of it, ''Zig's'' hearing becomes oversensitive and some birds (likely unknowingly) torment him with it]].
* TeachersPet: Acts like this when he was one of [[HotTeacher Marina's]] students in the episode of the same name; he (with [[HyperCompetentSidekick Bernie's]] help) easily passes her class and [[BitchInSheepsClothing pretends to be]] a NiceGuy to kiss up to her. Also, none of the other students like him, though he doesn't seem to care.
* TeamRocketWins: Mostly due to [[ArchEnemy Sharko]]'s interference, Zig has lost ''[[IneffectualSympatheticVillain hundreds of times]]''. However, there are actually a handful of instances when he scores a victory. [[spoiler:"Run Sharko, Run!" for instance has him win a marathon, though he doesn't seem to care]].
* TechnicolorEyes: Zigzagged. His peepers are [[PsychoPink pink]], which is an unnatural eye color for hyenas in RealLife. But sometimes they're [[BlackEyesOfEvil black]] instead, which ''is'' a natural eye color for hyenas.
* TeensAreMonsters: It's shown in "Teen Rebels" that he wasn't above trying to eat [[NiceGirl Marina]] when he was a teenager. Also, when he briefly gets turned back into a teen in "The Cloud", he still attempts to swallow her.
* TennisBoss: A non-[[VideoGames gaming]] example, sorta. During one of his fights with Sharko in season one, Zig pilots a HumongousMecha and makes it give Sharko two {{Rocket Punch}}es. However, Sharko then [[HoistByHisOwnPetard knocks it back at him]], with fish shaped like UsefulNotes/{{tennis}} rackets.
* TerribleArtist: PlayedForLaughs in "A Brother's Tiff", in which he makes a shoddy drawing of a [[InsaneTrollLogic ridiculous]] excuse of an EvilPlan.
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: Played straight in "Sharko and Zig on the Rocks". After opening a snack bar with Sharko, the shark spends much of it mistreating him unprovoked. No wonder Zig eventually left the business and returned to villainy.
* ThrowTheDogABone: Surprisingly, there are some instances in which something goes [[CosmicPlaything Zig's]] way. [[spoiler:"Lost in the Jungle" for example, ends with [[TeamRocketWins him successfully stealing Sharko's wooden statue of Marina]] which [[ExtremeOmnivore he happily eats]]]].
* TokenMinority: He's the only UsefulNotes/{{Africa}}n in the main cast, with his nationality being revealed [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YESNrRRuA6E in the official description for "Goin' Home"]].
* TokenRobot: During most of "Bionic Zig", Zig is the main cast's sole robot.
* TopHeavyGuy: He briefly ([[MakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext somehow]]) [[https://zigandsharko.fandom.com/wiki/LOL_Zig?file=LOLZig_%25285%2529.png gains a ripped upper body with his legs remaining unmuscular]] in "LOL Zig". [[BlatantLies It's a mystery how Sharko (who's also an example of that trope) wasn't impressed]].
* {{Troll}}: He's not above messing with Sharko, like giving him a TakeThatKiss in "The Moo Can".
* {{Tsundere}}: A non-romantic, male example.
** A [[DownplayedTrope mild]] one with Bernie. Zig sometimes is cold to him, but it's clear he cares about him underneath that.
** A strange example in "Zig [[SupremeChef Top Chef]]" in which he's this to one of Sharko's ''dishes''. While he loves it, he doesn't want Sharko to know that. Therefore, he acts like it tastes repulsive and throws it away.
* TVHeadRobot: He dresses like one (i.e. a robot with a television-like head) in "Robot Craze".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:U-Y]]
* UnderwearOfPower: He wears a visible pair of undies when trying to be a superhero in [[SuperheroEpisode "Super Zig"]].
* UnEvilLaugh: He may be evil and TheHyena, but he generally can't pull off an EvilLaugh to save his life.
* UngratefulBastard: Has his moments. For instance, [[spoiler:he shows nil gratitude to Sharko in "Little Train, Big Adventure" after [[SaveTheVillain he prevents the train he was in from falling]]. Granted, he probably only did it because his beloved Marina was also in the train. But it still doesn't change that [[SaveTheVillain he still saved him]]]].
* TheUnfettered: A mixture of Type I, III, and V. Zig is [[ObsessedWithFood obsessed with devouring Marina]]. And he doesn't care (or [[DidntThinkThisThrough consider]]) what could happen if his attempt fails. He will also use any means to eat her, like FlawExploitation and exploiting Sharko's (who's his main obstacle to eating Marina) allergy to gull [[{{Pun}} feathers]] in "Atchoo!". And in "Daddy Cool" he [[ManipulativeBastard tricks them]] into [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking thinking he's a baby]]. (ItMakesSenseInContext.)
* UsedToBeASweetKid: An implied variant in [[AlliterativeTitle "Lightning Love"]]. After [[ManChild he regresses into a cub]] (implied to be the same mentality he had at that age), he starts being a [[NiceGuy sweetheart]]. A far cry from his typical villainous and devious self. The episode also suggests he had InnocentBlueEyes when he was a cub, although his eyes are [[PsychoPink pinkish]] now. Which could [[{{Symbolism}} symbolize him experiencing a "loss of innocence"]].
* VampiresHateGarlic: Because [[ActuallyNotAVampire she thought he was a vampire]], Marina tries to exploit this on Zig via shoving garlic in his mouth in "[[VampireDance Dance of the Vampire]]".
* VeryPunchableMan: He's a villain and [[CosmicPlaything this universe has had more things happen to him than just being punched]][[note]]though that's [[AmusingInjuries happened several times]] too[[/note]]...
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: Extremely downplayed. {{Flashback Episode}}s reveal [[VillainousUnderdog Zig]] never was a match for [[HeroAntagonist Sharko]] physically when they were younger. But it's ''considerably'' more noticeable when they both reached adulthood; Sharko gets strong enough to do stuff like '''[[SuperStrength lifting an island]]''' in "Fishy Story".
* VillainHasAPoint: Scoundrel he may be, but Zig has made several accurate points. He states the titular character in "The Mummy" is unstable, for example.
* AVillainNamedZrg: A downplayed, non-ScienceFiction example; he's an IneffectualSympatheticVillain named '''Z'''i'''g'''.
* VillainousBreakdown: He has plenty of these, albeit of varying intensities. Granted they're justified as being upset is understandable given he's such a CosmicPlaything. Also, they can be caused by interference from [[SuperStrength Sharko]], a LightningBruiser prone to beating him.
** He's in the mood for these in [[AlliterativeTitle "Tinky Toys"]] as he loses his composure several times during said episode.
** Implied to be subverted in [[spoiler:"Bodyguard". When Sharko thwarts his final attempt to kidnap Marina, [[NiceKitty Zig begins sacredly backing away]]. However, it's implied he was just acting and he intended for Sharko to do that]].
** Occasionally PlayedForLaughs. In "Banana peel [sic]" for instance, after Sharko ruins one his schemes, [[PsychopathicManchild Zig]] starts crying like a SpoiledBrat who didn't get ice cream.
** Played straight during one of his attempts to eat [[NiceGirl Marina]] in "The Invaders"; he starts off as confident as ever but begins freaking out when [[spoiler:Sharko's brain ([[DidntSeeThatComing of all things]]) starts pulling a BigDamnHero moment]].
* VillainousCrossdresser: Several times he's gone DisguisedInDrag, especially during schemes to eat [[NiceGirl Marina]].
* VillainousGlutton:
** Especially in his [[{{Pun}} salad days]]; for example [[EnfantTerrible he]] once ate numerous bananas, and it didn't stop him from having a GrowlingGut.
** PlayedForLaughs in "Zig's Shadow"; Bernie feeds [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Zig]] a Marina-like apple, a shrub resembling her (including its [[ExtremeOmnivore pot]]), and a [[ExtremeOmnivore painting]] of her. However, throughout the whole ordeal, his [[GrowlingGut stomach was growling hard enough to shake the ship they were on]]. And, even when [[ItMakesSenseInContext he accidentally swallows a camera]], it's implied he was still hungry.
* VillainousRescue:
** [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain He]] pretends to do this in "The King's Highway" via [[ManipulativeBastard tricking Marina into thinking]] he was going to rescue [[HeroAntagonist Sharko]].
** At least a couple instances have him try rescuing Marina, like saving her from a storm in... well... "The Storm". Granted, they're out of PragmaticVillainy.
** Defied in [[spoiler:"The Conquistador", in which the titular conquistador was [[SwordPointing pointing his sword]] at [[HeroAntagonist Sharko]]. And, while a nearby [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Zig]] initially seems like he was going to save him, instead [[RefuseToRescueTheDisliked he just grabs some ketchup]] (ItMakesSenseInContext)]].
* VillainousUnderdog: He's physically weaker than [[HeroAntagonist Sharko]] (who has SuperStrength). And for the "Villainous" part, just look at some of these {{trope}}s!
* VillainProtagonist: [[ZigzaggedTrope It varies]] as not all episodes center on him. If he's the protagonist of an episode however, you can normally expect him to try to eat [[NiceGirl Marina]].
* TheVillainSucksSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5GvXWZB3EE "Marina Superstar"]] has shades of this:
-->''Paws off Marina, Zig''
-->''This mermaid's not your gig''
* VillainsWantMercy: While not as noticeable as some cases, sometimes [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Zig]] tries to get [[HeroAntagonist Sharko]] to spare him. At least kinda justified because [[LightningBruiser Sharko]] isn't above pummeling him, he's got SuperStrength, and can be as cruel as [[WesternAnimation/OggyAndTheCockroaches Joey]].
* VillainTeamUp: [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain He]] spends much of "The Master of the Volcano" working with [[EvilIsBurningHot Hades]].
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: A [[ZigzaggingTrope zigzagged]] one. While Zig is the main threat to Marina's life, he normally [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer isn't well-liked]] (especially, but not exclusively, in season one). However, in a couple episodes, he temporarily gains a good reputation.
* VoicesAreMental: When he swaps bods with Sharko, his voice sounds exactly the same as it did when he was in his original body.
* WalkOnWater: He zigzags this ability (at least in season one); [[RuleOfFunny sometimes he can transverse on water]].
* WeakButSkilled: He is unable to beat Sharko, but he and Bernie are both really great builders and constructors.
* WentCrazyWhenTheyLeft: [[spoiler:After his adoptive brother and [[HeterosexualLifePartners Heterosexual Life Partner]] Bernie leaves him in "A Brother's Tiff", Zig eventually [[GoMadFromTheIsolation begins losing it]]]].
* WeWantOurJerkBack: A downplayed one in "Veggiezig [sic]". After being hypnotized by Sharko, Zig quits being a sneaky villain. And the main cast seems to like the change (though [[BrainlessBeauty Marina]] doesn't seem to notice the difference). However, later in the episode, [[CrazyJealousGuy Sharko]] later wants him to return to his typical self.
* WhiteMaleLead: Inverted in the episodes when he's the protagonist, as he's UsefulNotes/{{Africa}}n (which is revealed in the Website/{{YouTube}} channel's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YESNrRRuA6E description for "Goin' Home"]]). It's also zigzagged as not all episodes center on him.
* WeakButSkilled: In a straight-up fight he always gets ''destroyed'' by Sharko, but he and Bernie are both really great builders and constructors.
* TheWorldIsJustAwesome: Towards the beginning of "Disco in the Dark", he enters a wacky parallel world. It doesn't take long for him to be impressed by it.
* WouldHarmASenior: Apparently PlayedForLaughs, but in "The Mime" he throws a elderly turtle off her chair. Doubles as WouldHitAGirl for an obvious reason.
* WouldHitAGirl: Even if you don't count him trying to devour Marina, a few instances have Zig attempting to drop something on her (e.g. a tree in "A Mysterious Guest"). He also tries blowing a stick of TNT at another mermaid in [[AlliterativeTitle "Manic Mermaid"]], which [[HoistByHisOwnPetard spectacularly backfires]].
* WouldHurtAChild: Occasionally he's shown this. [[spoiler:He kicks a baby creature in "Daddy Dearest", for example (even if it's at least slightly justified; said creature is a TentacledTerror who was harshly grabbing him)]].
* YankTheDogsChain: Part of why he's a CosmicPlaything. There are multiple instances when [[ThrowTheDogABone something seems to be going Zig's way]], but it only falls flat.
* YouAreWhatYouHate: A [[PlayedForLaughs comical]] example in "It's Magic"; he's shown to be a shoddy magician and he mocks Sharko for seemingly being that.
