Lamia Scale

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lamia_scale_profile_pic.png
Lamia Scale is one of the legal guilds in Fiore, being its third best in the country. Led by its Guild Master, Ooba Babasaama.

    In General
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed, as while they're still placed high in the Grand Magic Games, they have fewer points than they do in canon, notably due to their performances in the battle portions. In canon, Jura's match with Mystogan/Jellal ended in a victory due to Ultear and Meredy interfering to keep Jellal's cover from being blown, while here his match with Nero ends in a draw, giving him only five points. And while Sherria's match with Wendy ended in a draw in canon, here she loses the match due to Wendy receiving more training, as well as fighting smart. This continues as they are defeated by Mermaid Heel in the team fight while in canon they managed a draw (if only barely) since Mermaid Heel came at them with all three of their S-Class Wizards while they only had a comparable fighter in Lyon with Yuka and Sho acting more as his support. And at the end of the Grand Magic Games, they end up in the fifth place, second last.
  • The Cavalry: In the Devil Hand Arc they help Fairy Tail members against the hordes of demons together with Blue Pegasus.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Thanks to Yuka's Wave Magic and Sho's Card Magic they manage to at least temporarily get the upper hand against Mermaid Heel (who's coming at them with all three of their top S-Class wizards), but once the former gets taken down things go swiftly downhill for them, and even Lyon's impressive final attack was meant more as defiance than actually intending to win. By the end, they failed to even significantly injure one of their opponents.
  • Mythical Motifs: A Lamia is a creature from Greek mythology descending from the mythological figure of Lamia, known for her female upper body topping a serpentine tail and her habit of devouring children.

    Ooba Babasaama
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ooba-ftanime_6457.jpg

The Guild Master of Lamia Scale, she's an old crabby lady who spins around and makes others spin when she's annoyed.

    Lyon Vastia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_lyon_anime.png

A top Ice-Make wizard who studied together with Gray.

  • Determinator: Refuses to give up even when facing down Mermaid Heel's three strongest members by himself, one of whom can eat the element he uses, conjuring one of the most impressive displays of Ice-Make (no less than nine life-sized animal constructs) he's ever done and even briefly getting the physical upper-hand on Sapphire, a Dragon Slayer. Though everyone knows he's screwed, they give him points for going down while standing up rather than just giving up.
  • Foil: At the end of the Devil Hand arc, Juvia notices that Lyon looks like Vergil, with Macao and Wakaba noticing that both of them have pointed eyes and the same spiky-hair style. Gray agrees with them as he also remembers Lyon having the same beliefs on strength as Vergil back on Galuna Island, and acted as a rival to his foster brother who is a member of Fairy Tail. The difference being that Lyon came to sincerely regret his actions and turned over a new leaf by joining Lamia Scale, whereas Vergil shows little to no remorse for what he has done in pursuit of power.
  • Golem: His Living Ice Make technique grants him the power to create living ice animals that he can control remotely, including dragons, tigers, and gorillas.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He is this to Juvia, who is already in love with Gray. Most of his gestures toward Juvia only creep her out.
  • An Ice Person: Can create creatures out of his ice that moves on their own.
  • Love at First Sight: He first sees Juvia during the Devil Hand Arc, much earlier than in canon (where he did it during the end of the Tenrou Arc), before the seven-year time skip.

    Sherry Blendy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sherry2-ftanime_5270.jpg

A member of Lamia Scale, a love-obsessed woman that uses Doll magic to control lifeless objects to serve her.

  • Cat Eared Headband: Wears one as part of her post-Time Skip outfit.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Goes from Girlish Pigtails to Letting Her Hair Down between her appearances in the Galuna Island and Nirvana arcs sort of as a coming-of-age thing.
  • Ladyof Black Magic: She is essentially a very beautiful witch capable of taking control of the body of all non-human creatures and animating any inanimate object to transform it into a monster that will fully obey her orders.
  • Love Freak: "Love" is practically her Catchphrase as she uses it in totally bizarre situations, such as using "love" instead of "death" to describe "eternal rest". Oh yeah, she even tried to with Dante which he likes.
  • Marionette Master: Her Marionette Attack Magic lets her control anything that isn't human, which includes material things like carpets and rocks to living beings like trees.

    Yuka Suzuki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_yuka_anime.png

A wizard with large eyebrows who uses his Wave Motion spells to produce magic-negating pulses from his hands.

  • Anti-Magic: His Wave Motion instantly nullifies any magic it makes contact with. The only catch is that it is only effective against one type of magic at a time, so it's useless on groups of wizards with differing abilities. It was shown in the Let's Welcome Chaos chapter that it also works on demonic energies as well.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: His defining features are his freakishly huge eyebrows. They get even longer after the Time Skip.
  • Reverse Arm-Fold: Has his arms in this position most of the time.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Dogs and Pegasi - Lamia and Mermaids reveals that over the course of the timeskip, he improved his Wave Magic to the point where he can nullify the magic and demonic power of several enemies at once, actually putting Mermaid Heel's strongest members on the defensive.

    Toby Olorta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_toby_anime.png

A dimwitted man who dresses and behaves like a dog. He can grow his nails into the Mega Jellyfish Paralyzing Claws which, well, paralyze people.

  • Bash Brothers: Usually fights alongside Yuka.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Just to give an example of how dim this guy is, he spends three whole months looking for a sock that was hung around his neck the whole time.
  • Dogs Are Dumb: He looks like a dog and boy is he dumb. When he use his claws on some demons that were holding some explosions, he used paralyzing magic to paralyze the demons, making them drop the bombs, resulting in an explosion, in which he is surprised that he could that, only for Yuka to correct him which the former comically shock by it.
  • Dumb Muscle: Toby is rather dimwitted, and works best by assisting Yuka in taking down their foes.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Toby sometimes gets mad for no apparent reason.
  • No Indoor Voice: Prone to screaming, especially once he gets mad.
  • The Paralyzer: His poison-tipped claws have this effect on his enemies.
  • Wolverine Claws: His magic lets him grow out his fingernails into sharp claws, which are coated in a poison that paralyzes opponents.

    Jura Neekis
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_jura_anime.png

Lamia Scale's strongest wizard and eighth-ranked (currently sixth) Wizard Saint, he's a powerful wizard nicknamed "Iron Rock Jura".

  • Adaptational Badass: In canon, Jura was able to go toe-to-toe with Laxus in his basic form, but here, he's able to go toe-to-toe with Laxus and Sapphire in their respective Dragon Force forms. And in addition enhancing himself with Iron Rock Armor that increases his physical capabilities and defense.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Jura's still on the lower end of the scale to the other Wizard Saints as 6th rank, while in canon he overtook all but the oldest members post-time skip as 5th rank, holding the title of "Strongest Human Wizard".
  • Bald Mystic: He's a powerful wizard with a beautiful, bald head. Of course, he's pretty self-conscious about it,
  • Big Damn Heroes: He, along with fellow Wizard Saint Makarov and Fairy Tail's strongest wizard Gildarts, saved the exhausted members of his Lamia Scale, as well as Fairy Tail and Blue Pegasus, by destroying the demon hordes in the Devil Hand Arc.
  • The Big Guy: He's the strongest wizard in Lamia Scale, and among heaviest hitters in the Grand Magic Games thanks to his size, strength and powerful Earth Magic.
  • Elemental Armor: Iron Rock Armor, a spell that clads Jura in rock armor that's identical to the Rock Mountain spell, increasing his physical capabilities and defense, noting that he only uses it when he's fully serious and only few have forced him to use that spell.
  • Gentle Giant: Despite being tall and a bit intimidating, Jura is very kind and humble.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Breaks out his Iron Rock Armor during his fight against Laxus and Sapphire, his comments and reactions from his fellow Wizard Saints indicating it's something he rarely needs. With it, he is just shy of being Nigh-Invulnerable, barely flinching from his opponents' attacks.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Fitting for the Wizard Saint, Jura is both strong and fast, able to tie with Nero at the final match of 1st day of GMG, able to fight Laxus and Sapphire in their respective Dragon Force forms simultaneously.
  • Red Baron: "Iron Rock" Jura.
  • Time-Passage Beard: He grows a beard over the Time Skip.
  • Yellow Earth, Green Earth: "Iron Rock" Jura is a wizard who specializes in Earth Magic and most of his spells have a yellow aura.
  • Worthy Opponent:
    • After the match with Nero, the two develop mutual respect for each other's capabilities, with the two hoping to have a rematch in the future.
    • He even sees this with Laxus and Sapphire, felt absolutely thrilled in his fight against them during the three-way battle in the last day of the X791 Grand Magic Games.

    Shô
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sho.jpg

One of Erza's three childhood friends whom she met in the Tower of Heaven. He joins Lamia Scale during the seven-year time skip.

  • Adaptation Expansion: In canon he and Wally kinda... disappear from the plot after the Tower of Heaven arc. Here they reappear as soon as the first chapter of the sequel. And he's a member of Lamia Scale.
  • Big Sister Worship: He's not related to Erza by blood, but he is nonetheless inspired by her incredible display of power and leadership during their original insurrection, and always refers to her as "sister" or "sis".
  • Death Dealer: Sho's magic involves the use of cards, either as prison dimensions or projectiles. He is also fittingly introduced while disguised as a casino dealer. His Magic has been also expanded so that his spell attacks are based on poker cards.
  • Facial Markings: Has a snake-shaped tattoo on the left side of his chin.
  • Mr. Exposition: It was him, as well as Wally and Millianna that told Erza about Jellal's escape.
  • Weak, but Skilled: His Card Magic doesn't stand out in terms of raw power, and he is at a clear disadvantage in his fight against Kagura, even with her magic sealed. Nevertheless, his magic gives him plenty of versatility, and using a well-timed distraction alongside his card prison briefly lets him take Kagura out of a fight.

    Sherria Blendy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_sherria_anime.png

Sherry's younger, clumsier cousin. A teenage prodigy, she is a Sky God Slayer with mastery over wind and healing magic.

  • Blow You Away: She conjures black winds with her magic.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Her God Slayer Magic unleashes black-colored winds, but Sherria is a sweetheart compared to the psychopathic Zancrow or the arrogant Orga. Even Wendy can't help but notice the sheer contrast of personality with her fellow God Slayers. Even more noticeable with the reveal that God Slayer Magic originated directly from Mundus himself and that most practitioners were historically prone to A God Am I mindsets.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Despite losing to Wendy, she accepts her loss happily and even becomes her friend.
  • Graceful Loser: Is not upset in the slightest when she loses to Wendy in the Games.
  • Healing Factor: Her Sky God Slayer Magic provides her the ability to heal her own injuries, something Wendy doesn't possess. According to Lyon, this power in particular has made Sherria all but unbeatable in the past. Wendy figures out, however, that Sherria's healing doesn't restore her stamina, and quickly realizes that as long as she can keep Sherria from eating air, she can outlast her even if Sherria keeps healing her wounds.
  • Spirited Competitor: She loves the chance for a good clean fight, and is clearly enjoying her fight with Wendy even as it proves much harder than she expected. Even when Wendy wins, Sherria is nothing but happy for the chance to strike up a friendship.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: In comparison to Wendy she's this. Even with Wendy's Second Origin and her training from Modeus, it's made clear during their fight Sherria has the advantage in raw power due to the advantage God Slayer Magic has on Dragon Slayer Magic. However, it's also made clear while Sherria is well-versed in her magic, she's far more reliant on her magic's destructive force and her Healing Factor to sweep away the competition, which allows Wendy to match her by fighting smart.

Blue Pegasus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_pegasus_banner.png
Blue Pegasus is one of the legal guilds in Fiore. Led by its Guild Master, Bob.

    In General
  • Adaptational Badass: They are this compared to their canon selves who are comical relief at best.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: They may be quirky and focused on beauty but they're formidable wizards in their own right with Jenny as its S-Class Wizard and Ichiya as the Number 1 Wizard in the Guild.
  • The Cavalry: They, along with Lamia Scale, helped the Fairy Tail wizards against the demon hordes.
  • Mythical Motifs: Pegasus. Beautiful flying horses fit because most members are quite good-looking... most at least. They even got a Pegasus theme on their airship called Cristina that belongs to the guild.

    Bob
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bob.png

The Guild Master of Blue Pegasus that dresses as a woman... and if you are curious he is a man.

    Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_ichiya_anime.png

The black sheep of Blue Pegasus, whose suave demeanor and sexy voice clash with his stout stature and ugly face. His perfume magic produces fragrances with varying effects, from painkillers to super strength to super speed. Despite his borderline uselessness in a fight, Ichiya is regarded highly within the guild as its top wizard.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He has a thing for Erza, so much so that, even without knowing he was outside of Temen-ni-gru, him blowing a kiss towards the tower where she's at causes Erza to shudder in horror (keep in mind that she's inside a haunted tower filled with demons, which says a lot).
  • Badass Boast: He delivers this against several demons with a composed demeanor.
Ichiya: Such vile and ugly creatures. You do not deserve to live in the same world as my sweet honey!
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's generally seen as a weird little troll and something of a pervert, but Ichiya's charisma and strength both physical and mental are very real. He has never hesitated to stand his ground against demons, and his fellow Blue Pegasus members freely admit he's their ace only matched by Jenny in the Grand Magic Games. With his Power Parfum, he can tank and match blows with Bacchus, who previously showed off his chops by utterly schooling Elfman.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His Power Parfum has a purple coloration, boosting his size and strength and allowing him to fight demons.

    The Three Trimens
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_trimens_in_x791.png

The Tri-Men are Blue Pegasus's elite team of lady-swooning pretty boys under Ichiya's command.

  • The Casanova: All three of them are this.
    • In the Devil Hand Arc, they informed the female members of Fairy Tail inside of Temen-ni-gru (Lisanna, Lucy, Lady, Mira, Erza, Carla, and Trish) saying they're here in seductive voices, causing all the women to sweat-drop, even ones not in the guild (Angel/Sorano and Sheeree).
    • When they encounter Trish, they start by trying to compliment her while surrounding her, although she is not impressed. Then after the battle, they try this with Lisanna, much to her surprise, telling her she is just as beautiful as her older sister, Mira, and must be an angel, much to Natsu's anger.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: When they encounter Angel again at the end of the Devil Hand Arc, they're still angry about her role in Karen's death, even if Lucy and Lisanna defend her, saying that she is a victim.

    Jenny Realight
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_jenny_anime.png

A pinup model for Sorcerer Weekly, Mirajane's old rival and an S-Class Wizard of Blue Pegasus. She uses a form of Take Over Magic called Machina Soul.

  • The Ace: She may be a pinup model for Sorcerer Weekly, but she does hold the rank of S-Class in Blue Pegasus and uses a form of Take-Over Magic.
  • Adaptational Badass: After losing to Mira on the second day of the Games in a case of Worf Had the Flu (as described below), Jenny gets a chance to truly show off her skills during the Naval Battle, using an aquatic-based form called War-Hydro, and holds her own briefly against Sherria and Risley. She also takes down Rocker and Yager of Quatro Puppy on her own during the Day 4 triple battle after Nichiya goes down, with her fellows noting she's their ace alongside Ichiya.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: She was on the receiving end courtesy of Mirajane who took her down with two hits and she didn't get the chance to counter.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She didn't expect Mirajane's current transformation, Satan Soul: Sitri, to dwarf hers in terms of raw power as she was going for sexy, not dangerous.
  • Made of Iron: Despite being taken down by Mirajane in two hits, she is tougher than she looked after being punched into the ground by Satan Soul: Sitri Mira and walked it off, aside from comically crying in defeat.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Naturally as she's a model for Sorcerer Weekly and during her match with Mirajane, she excites the majority of the audience with her various sexy outfits she posed with.
  • Multiform Balance: Like most Take-Over users, she has multiple options thanks to her Machina Soul.
  • Worf Had the Flu: According to Word of God in Chapter 33, the author explained the reason why Jenny lost so easily, despite being considered a rival for Mirajane. She donned a transformation that was supposed to be more sexy and less powerful, assuming it was part of the beauty contest; while Mirajane changed it to an actual battle and went with her strongest current Satan Soul form, attacking and defeating Jenny without giving her a chance to counter. The author reassured that Jenny will get her time to shine and showcase what she can really do with Machina Soul.

    Nichiya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/300px-Nichya_prof_3283.jpg
Click here to see his disguise during the Grand Magic Games

An Exceed, member of Blue Pegasus, and the Edolas counterpart of Ichiya. He disguised himself in a rabbit costume who serves as Blue Pegasus' "secret weapon" for the Grand Magic Games.

  • Adaptational Badass: In canon, he was comically one-shotted by Bacchus. Here? He is a skilled swordsman who sparred with Panther Lily in the Exceed Royal Guard back in Edolas and proves he can hold his own in a pitched fight.
  • Fragile Speedster: Is a superb swordsman and displays sufficient speed to slice at all three Quattro Cerberus members before they can react, even catching Bacchus off guard. However, he lacks the physical strength and durability of the likes of Samuel and Panther Lily thanks to their Battle Forms, which gets him knocked out by Rocker once he actually manages a good shot.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Although not on Panther-Lily's level, Nichiya was still a member of Extalia Royal Guard with impressive sword skills and speed from his Aera. Best shown when he held his own against several Quatro Cerberus (Puppy) members, but was knocked out with one hit by Rocker.

Quatro Cerberus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/quatro_cerberus_banner.png
Quatro Cerberus is one of the legal guilds in Fiore.

    In General
  • Adaptational Wimp: The Guild's performance in the Grand Magic Games is worse in Devil's Retribution due to either almost every other guild getting better Adaptational Badass treatments than them, or the guilds already being stronger on a member-to-member basis. To explain, Bacchus is the only S-Class Level Wizard of the guild, whereas almost everyone else has at minimum 2 S-Class Level Wizards on their side. The result of this is Quatro Cerberus losing Chariot, the only event their guild won in canon, to Lucia of Mermaid Heel.
  • Animal Motifs: Dogs. The guild is named after the three-headed guard dog of Hades, and some of its members have canine traits, with Wally calling himself a Dandy Dog.
  • Butt-Monkey: Like in canon the guild doesn't do very well in the Grand Magic Games. To prove the point, they're renamed "Quatro Puppy" after Elfman beats Bacchus as part of a bet.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Their match against Blue Pegasus ends with them losing in a two-on-three matchup in their favour, but Goldmine and Yager still managed to take out Nichiya (who underwent Adaptational Badass) before this point and briefly incapacitate Jenny with some quick thinking.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: They're not a weak guild as they were able to get past the preliminaries in the Grand Magic Games, but Bacchus is their only exceptionally strong member with their next best fighter being Wally, and while good he's not S-Class material. By comparison, all the other competing guilds have at least two S-Class level fighters and so they end up as the weakest of the competing guilds and often outclassed by their competitors in the various events and fights.

    Goldmine
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goldmine-ftanime_5701.jpg

The master of Quatro Cerberus and an old friend of Makarov's.

    Bacchus Groh
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_bacchus_anime.png

The strongest wizard in Quatro Cerberus, renowned for inventing his own unique martial art known as Chop Hanging Palm.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Unlike canon, he apologizes for the terms of his 'bet' with Elfman (with minor prodding from Wally), and even clarifies when he requested Mirajane and Lisanna 'spend the night keeping him company', he just meant join him for a few drinks. The only reason he said it so sleazily was to rile up Elfman in hopes of a better fight.
  • Drunken Master: He invented his own fighting style called Drunken Chop Hanging Palm. As if he weren't dangerous enough when sober, he becomes nightmarishly fast and flexible when he's actually drunk.
  • Graceful Loser: When Elfman beats him, he sincerely complements him, declaring him 'a real man'.

    Wally Buchanan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wally_buchanan.jpg

A childhood friend of Erza's from the Tower of Heaven, who joined Quatro Cerberus during the seven-year time skip. He dresses and acts like a gangster.

  • Adaptation Expansion: In canon he and Sho kinda... disappear from the plot after the Tower of Heaven arc. Here they reappear as soon as the first chapter of the sequel.
  • Badassina Nice Suit: He wears a sharp suit to match his ideal of a gangster.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Actually a little brother, but still cares about his older brother Richard/Hoteye. When he sees the Neo Oracion Seis, he is angry the most at them because he blames them for turning his brother to the dark side, and when Racer recognized him as Hoteye's younger brother, he exclaimed that his name is Richard, showing how much he cares for his older brother.
  • Detachment Combat: His magic allows him to split up his body into blocks and launch them at enemies as projectiles.
  • Everyone Has Standards: During the "Hidden" challenge of the Grand Magic Games, he doesn't approve of Nullpudding favoring attacking Gray and makes sure to give the Raven Tail member a good shot to deflate his ego.
    • Shows disgust when Bacchus makes a bet with Elfman to spend a night with both his sisters should he win. Although Wally wants a win for his team, he finds it hard not to root for Fairy Tail since, in his own words, you gotta show women respect.
  • Graceful Loser: Besides Bacchus, he's the only member of his team to take the man's loss against Fairy Tail in stride, even saying that it's a dandy way to lose.
  • Mr. Exposition: It was him alongside Sho and Millianna told about Jellal's escape to Erza.
  • Power-Upgrading Deformation: Learning magic that lets him split his body up into blocks also gave him a permanently block-like appearance.
  • You Remind Me of X: When he encounters Mary Hughes about never questioning her superior, it reminds him about Jellal and the Tower of Heaven.

Mermaid Heel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mermaid_heel_profile_pic.png
Mermaid Heel is one of the legal guilds in Fiore, being known as an all-female guild, and is the second best in the country. Led by its Guild Master and the strongest Wizard Saint, Kurenai.

    In General
  • Adaptational Badass: They were no pushovers in Grand Magic Games, but here they are the second strongest guild and their Guild Master is the 1st ranked Wizard Saint. In addition, they have two new S-Class wizards in their guild Lucia and Sapphire, and both Kagura and Risley have new abilities. They do far better in the Grand Magic Games as a result, even managing to get ahead of both Fairy Tail and Sabertooth in the rankings on Day 3, and are clearly on par with both of them. At the end of the fourth day, they are in second place with two points behind Fairy Tail, and ten points ahead of Sabertooth. And at the end of the Grand Magic Games, they end up in second place overall, with Fairy Tail taking first place and Sabertooth third place.
  • Always Second Best: For the last few Grand Magic Games they have come in second place behind Sabertooth. At the end of X791 Games they manage to get ahead of Sabertooth but are second to Fairy Tail.
  • Badass Crew: There the second strongest guild in Fiore only surpassed by Sabertooth. At the end of X791 Grand Magic Games, they eventually surpass Sabertooth by being in second place, while Sabertooth in third place, only being surpassed by Fairy Tail.
  • Foil: To Sabertooth. They are the two top ranked guilds in Fiore during the Grand Magic Games and they both serve as Fairy Tail’s most challenging opponents during the games. Mermaid Heel for the most part has a Friendly Rivalry with Fairy Tail and the two guilds are on good terms while Fairy Tail can't stand Sabertooth. Furthermore, Sabertooth has a lot of Teeth-Clenched Teamwork and they dislike to outright hate their master, while Mermaid Heel are True Companions and they adore their Guild Master seeing her as a mother figure. And in terms of losing fights, Mermaid Heel’s members are Graceful Losers who accept their losses and praise their opponents, while Sabertooth’s members are Sore Losers who can’t stand the idea of losing to people they deem “weaker”, Vergil and Rogue being exceptions.
  • Mythical Motifs: Mermaids. Beautiful half-woman, half-fish, and their Guild Master is nicknamed "The Mother of the Oceans".
  • True Companions: Much like Fairy Tail they are a very tight-knit guild that considers their members to be family.

    Kurenai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kurenai_1.jpg

Kurenai, the Mother of the Ocean, is the Guild Master of Mermaid Heel and the first-ranked Wizard Saint. She's a sworn sister of Sparda, and the adoptive mother of Kagura.

  • Badass Boast: Gives an epic one in The Eclipse Project regarding why she is called 'Kurenai', all punctuated by slowly walking over towards the subject of her ire.
Kurenai: Defense Minister Darton... do you know why my name is Kurenai? Do you even know what the name 'Kurenai' means? It means 'crimson', a shade of red. Odd, considering I don't usually wear red, the colour is not my style. But that is the same colour of blood. My name is Kurenai because that is the aftermath of when I face an army of enemies single-handedly, be they human, demon, or even dragon... and leave an ocean of blood in my wake. While it is true that the Eclipse Gate does siphon off magic and demonic energy as you say, it does not do the same for my own physical strength. (picks up the blade of a spear) Strength that can shatter every bone of the human body without effort. (casually crushes spear) Or my proficiency with my trident, Poseidon, which with the appropriate amount of strength behind it, it can shatter mountaintops. (spins trident once to leave large mark on ground)
  • Badass Teacher: An extremely capable teacher going by Kagura's abilities.
  • Bash Siblings: Kurenai witnesses Sparda's cremation along with Fairy Tail and the Order of The Sword, where she reveals in Toward the Future that she is actually a demon who fought side-by-side with Sparda as "sworn siblings". She was also well-acquainted with the dragons, Grandeeney in particular, but doesn't know what became of them.
  • Benevolent Boss: Considers the members of her Guild to be her daughters and is a caring and supportive figure to them.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Kurenai is a warm, friendly woman who serves as a parental figure for her guild but she is also the most powerful of all the Wizard Saints and can be absolutely terrifying when she wants to be.
  • Canon Foreigner: Twofold. She fills in for the unnamed Master of Mermaid Heel and as one of the four unnamed members of the Ten Wizard Saints.
  • Death Glare: Gives off a huge one to Darton when she threatens him after he tries to have Lucy arrested. The narration describes it as one that makes even Erza's glares look like puppy-dog eyes.
  • Defector from Decadence: Like Sparda, Kurenai is a demon who grew to cherish the human world and cut ties with Mundus.
  • The Dreaded: Even God Serena doesn't dare challenge her which considering how powerful and arrogant he is, speaks volumes to her strength. And after seeing just a fraction of her strength in person, Lucy admits to finding her scarier than Erza.
  • Good Is Not Soft: While Kurenai is a hero who helped save Earthland from Mundus she states that she has slaughtered entire armies and left an ocean of blood in her midst. Threaten anyone who she considers family and she will put you in the ground.
  • Good Parents: As the 'mother' of Mermaid Heel, acts as a source of comfort and wisdom to all her 'daughters', and a Reasonable Authority Figure in general. Also fits this with her adoptive daughter Kagura, whom she raised and trained before and after adopting her.
  • Honorary Aunt: To Mavis who fondly calls her Auntie.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Kurenai (demon) raised and adopted Kagura (human) as her own daughter after the latter's village was destroyed by Zeref's cult.
  • Making a Splash: As her nickname is the Mother of the Ocean and she carries a trident and the Guild she leads is called Mermaid Heel she can presumably use some form of water-related powers.
  • Mama Bear: Like Makarov, she treats the members of Mermaid Heel as her own daughters. She even insists they call her 'mom', 'mommy', 'mama', 'mother', and other such nicknames. This also extends to others that she considers family; notably when Darton tries to have Lucy taken into custody with Arcadios and Yukino, she makes it clear that she will fight the entire royal army to protect her. Later, when Minerva kidnaps Millianna during the battle royale and tortures her, the aura of rage Kurenai gives off is enough to shake the entire arena she's in, and she vows to murder Minerva.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is the Japanese word for "crimson", which is the color of blood, referring to the oceans of blood she leaves in her wake whenever she defeats a small army.
  • Older Than They Look: Kurenai appears to be a grown woman in her thirties to forties, but she is around the same age as Sparda, making her at least 2000 years old.
  • One-Woman Army: Mentions having taken down armies of humans, demons, and dragons by her lonesome, to the point it left oceans of blood in her wake. Even without any powers, she manages to dispatch a small army of soldiers so fast that even Dante couldn't see her move.
  • Prongs of Poseidon: She carries a quite fancy trident, fitting for someone known as the "Mother of the Ocean". On top of that, it's also named "Poseidon".
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Guild Master of the Mermaid Heel and the most powerful of the Ten Wizard Saints.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Kurenai keeps the peace while meeting her fellow Wizard Saints and makes sure even God Serena behaves himself. The group then proceeds to discuss important matters, in part for Makarov's benefit due to his seven-year absence.
  • Telepathy: Kurenai possesses this ability to communicate with the others through their thoughts. It was first seen in Love That Transcends Time when Kurenai communicated with Erza through the thoughts to sing a lullaby in order to have Kagura go back to her senses.
  • World's Strongest Woman: Is ranked number one amongst the Ten Wizard Saints, with all that title implies. Even God Serena knows better than to push her too far. She is not a human wizard, but a demon who was one of Mundus' commanding officers before joining Sparda in his rebellion. Modeus himself praises her as a warrior and leader. Her power is so great, she can send a small army of soldiers flying with just her physical strength alone, no powers needed.

    Millianna

Click here to see her pre-Time Skip appearance

A cat-obsessed girl and childhood friend of Erza's from the Tower of Heaven who joined Mermaid Heel during the seven-year time skip.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Kinda. In canon, she didn't reappear until the Grand Magic Games arc. Here, she returns (along with Sho and Wally) as soon as the first chapter, right after the time skip.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats, of course. She loves cats, has a cat-like appearance, and her spells have cat themes and names.
  • Anime Hair: Dolled up in the style of cat ears.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Gets distracted by anything cat-related.
  • Cat Girl: Has the looks and behavior of one, though she's not really one.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Comes off this way because of her cat-loving tendencies.
  • Facial Markings: She has red marks on her face resembling cat whiskers.
  • Mr. Exposition: It was she alongside Sho and Wally about Jellal's escape to Erza.
  • Ms. Fanservice: After the Time Skip, Millianna abandons her wholesome, innocent outfit for a midriff-baring Dominatrix bikini with long gloves and knee-socks.
  • Sexy Cat Person: She combines her feline theme with heavy sexualization after the Time Skip.
  • She's All Grown Up: She was more of an adorable teenager pre-Time Skip, but she's grown into Ms. Fanservice after seven years.

    Lucia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucia_04.png
Click here to see her Devil Trigger

A female Devil Hunter, S-Class wizard, and the strongest member of Mermaid Heel.

  • The Ace: She is the single most powerful member of Mermaid Heel, aside from their master, evident in how she blocked a strike from Bacchus, The Ace of Quatro Cerberus, with ease, establishing that Mermaid Heel is a threat on par with Sabertooth. She later crushes Minerva, Sabertooth's second most powerful member in a Curb-Stomp Battle after unleashing her Devil Trigger. Freed believes that Lucia is as strong as Dante.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: While in Devil May Cry 2 she primarily fought with daggers, here she has her own set of Devil Arms for use in combat.
  • Always Someone Better: Is the 'better' to her guildmate and fellow ace Kagura, with the others unanimously agreeing that Lucia is their strongest member.
  • Battle Aura: Her demonic aura is white in color.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In Past and Future Revelations, when Lucia entered Devil Trigger, she completely overpowered Minerva to the point it was brutal one-sided slaughter, and left her into a bloody mess, even pointing that it would be so easy to kill her, but that'll only disqualify her from the tournament.
  • Fragile Speedster: Heavily downplayed given she's typically an example of a Lightning Bruiser, but her fight with Nero has this by comparison to his status as a Mighty Glacier. It's clear to everyone watching that her speed is several orders of magnitude greater than his, letting her slice him to ribbons early on, but once he starts landing hits they two end up equally damaged.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Strikes one up with Dante at the start of the Grand Magic Games, greeting him respectfully, and noting over the seven years he was gone she amassed a demonic kill count that may exceed even his. Both are friendly and look forward to clashing during the games. She also has one with Kagura as they're the two most powerful members of Mermaid Heel other than their master.
  • Fuuma Shuriken: This is the secondary mode of her water Devil Arm: Aquila, where it grows in size to a shuriken twice as big as her own body. It can also split into several dozens, as it was shown during the final day of GMG when Lucia fired around two dozens at Nero.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Lucia is a good person and cares deeply for her Guild sisters, but as Minerva discovered, you really don't want to get on her bad side. She inflicts probably the most brutal beatdown of the story so far on Minerva and the only reason she doesn't kill her is that it would get her disqualified from the Games. Afterwardds, Lucia makes is very clear to her that if she comes anywhere near her guild again, she's dead.
  • Graceful Loser: Is not bitter or upset at all at losing to Nero, and considers him a worthy opponent a sentiment he returns.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Strong enough to catch a punch from Bacchus without any real effort and is the winner of the Chariots Race showing an immense amount of speed and strength. When she activates her Devil Trigger her speed and strength skyrocket.
  • Light 'em Up: In her Devil Trigger, she can use light energy for ranged attacks, and even binding her opponents.
  • Magic Knight: Is a powerful Devil Hunter that wields her two swords and multiple Devil Arms with great skill.
  • Master Archer: With her dual crossbows: Rosso (red) and Azul (Blue), and fire bow Devil Arm: Apollo.
  • Male Might, Female Finesse: Lucia is the finesse to Nero's might during their fight in their respective Devil Triggers. Not only she's more experienced, but uses her greater speed and Flight to dance around her opponent, while using light demonic energy spears for range attacks and her graceful sword skills up close. Meanwhile, Nero is less experienced and noticeably slower than his opponent, and uses rougher tactics, enduring her hits, using his unique Devil Trigger and attacking by grabbing, slamming, and punching her with his Devil Bringer. Also subverted in the later stages as Nero shows precise use of Masayoshi to land some hits, and does so by breaking down her fighting style's timing, while she sticks to overwhelming offence.
  • Mythical Motifs: Her Devil Trigger is obviously associated with demons. Despite this, it has appearance that of an angel and a humanoid dove and light-based attacks are more in line with angel traits.
  • No-Sell: Lucia does this to one of Minerva's Yakuma Eighteen Battle Gods Magic spells: Mars Triumphus, to which the Devil Hunter just brushed off a small fire from her shoulder like it was a minor annoyance.
  • Punch Catch: In The Will of a Man chapter, Lucia effortlessly catches Bacchus' punch (with the same amount of strength he demolished all nearby chariots) with her palm and even pushes him back, leaving the individuals such as Dante, Erza, Makarov, Gildarts, and Bacchus himself to be surprised and stunned by her feat.
  • Sinister Scythe: Osiris, a scythe Devil Arm that has a light blade and emits beams of light.
  • Super Mode: Lucia is capable of entering her own Devil Trigger state, Freed noting that her level of power in that form is equivalent to Dante's.
  • Tranquil Fury: In Past and Future Revelations, Lucia may have had a calm expression, but underneath that, she was very furious for her guild sister Millianna being used as a hostage by Minerva. Once Nero saved Millianna from Minerva, Lucia entered her Devil Trigger form, completely reducing Minerva to a bloody mess in a one-sided slaughter.
  • Worthy Opponent: During the last day of GMG, Lucia acknowledges Nero as one of the strongest opponents she has ever faced in her life, and that she's enjoying the fight against him.

    Kagura Mikazuchi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_kagura_anime.png

The second most powerful member of Mermaid Heel after Lucia and the S-Class wizard. She is a master of Gravity Magic, and a master swordswoman with her Devil Arm katana, Archenemy. Kagura is also the adoptive daughter of Kurenai and the younger sister of Simon.

  • The Ace: She's one of the most powerful members of Mermaid Heel, surpassed only by Lucia. Her swift defeat of Yukino helps to establish Mermaid Heel as a threat on par with Sabertooth.
  • Adaptational Badass: In canon her katana, Archenemy, while powerful, is still just a magic sword. Here, it's a Devil Arm! And according to her guildmates, can absorb the power of incoming attacks for a boost in power.
  • Battle Aura: Her magical aura is dark indigo, but when using the Archenemy, her aura becomes demonic in dark red.
  • Cool Sword: Her sword Archenemy is a Devil Arm that can absorb the energy of attacks and use it to boost her own.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Kagura defeats Yukino without much difficulty.
  • Gravity Master: Kagura is a master of Gravity Magic which she can use to adjust her own gravity as well as pin opponents down or lift them up. She can also use it to greatly increase her own speed and strength.
  • Happily Adopted: After her village was raided by Zeref's cultists, Kagura was found by Kurenai who was tracking the cultists and was adopted by her.
  • Heroic Willpower: Both Milliana and Kurenai are completely confident that Kagura will have no difficulty in wielding her Devil Arm sword. However, when she spots Jellal she starts to lose control of it for a bit showing that her willpower has limits. Later on when Erza reveals the full story of how her brother Simon died, Kagura's willpower breaks and she loses full control of her Devil Arm. Eventually however after Erza sings Kurenai's old lullaby to her Kagura manages to regain control.
  • I Gave My Word: She holds Yukino's life in her hands as a result of their pre-battle wager. Kagura only regards her win as Yukino's life literally belonging to her, and doesn't even try to enforce this.
  • Interspecies Adoption: After her Rosemary Village was attacked and raided by Zeref's cult, she was found by Kurenai (demon) and brought her to Mermaid Heel. After two days, Kagura started to see Kurenai as her own mother, and the latter decided to raise the former and came to love her as her own child.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Kagura is very fast and strong, but when using her Gravity Magic to enhance her speed and sword strikes in conjunction with the Archenemy, she was able to overwhelm Erza when the latter used her Armadura Diabla armor.
  • Master Swordswoman: Can rival Erza as a swordswoman and wields the Devil Arm sword: Archenemy. Vergil calls her one of the deadliest swordswoman in Fiore and considering his own skills with a sword that says a lot.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Kagura feels completely ashamed of herself for losing control of her Devil Arm Sword and almost killing Erza.
  • Selective Gravity: Kagura can use her gravity Magic on a wide scale and/or on just herself and can control who if affected by her magic.
  • The Stoic: Barely ever shows any emotion and frowns constantly. According to Kurenai, she's been like this since finding out about her brother Simon's death.
  • Unstoppable Rage: When she finds out from Erza the full details of how her brother died, an enraged Kagura loses control of Archenemy and for a time overwhelms Erza who needs to use her own Devil Arm just to stay in the fight. While Kagura is ultimately defeated, the fight is extremely close and Erza can barely even stand by the end of it.

    Sapphire Caldwell
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sapphire_1.jpg

An Azure Dragon Slayer and an S-Class wizard of Mermaid Heel, and among the Top 3 best members alongside Lucia and Kagura. Before completing her undercover mission, she posed herself as a member of Raven Tail to spy on them.

  • The Ace: When she's revealed to be with Mermaid Heel, Lucia notes that she's an S-Class wizard, a rank meant for the most skilled and powerful guild wizards, and one that she shares with Lucia and Kagura. Sapphire further showcases her capability by fighting Laxus and Jura in three-way battle, and defeating Orga.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Sapphire's Mermaid Heel guildmates such as Amarilla, Risley, and Beth affectionally call her "Sapphy".
  • Ascended Fangirl: Has been a fan of Natsu ever since he took down Bora in Hargeon, and by present day is not only a member of a wizard's guild just like him, but is even a Dragon Slayer to boot! Her being invited to join in on Fairy Tail's celebration, by her idol no less, has her incredibly giddy.
  • Battle Aura: Sapphire's own battle aura manifests in the form of blue flames.
  • The Big Girl: She is among the strongest members of Mermaid Heel thanks to being an Azure Dragon Slayer. This gives her blue flames so cold that it burns, supplemented by tenacity on par with her idol Natsu.
  • Blood Knight: She's quite giddy when fighting Natsu in Origins. When Bruni shows up to stop the fight, followed by Gildarts, Makarov, Lucy, and Lisanna, she nearly picks a fight with all of them until Ivan stops her. Even further shows this when she's thrilled fighting Laxus and Jura in the three-way fight.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Just like Natsu, her idol. She enjoys hyping up the crowd before her team's fight with Lamia Scale and is quite expressive during the fight as well.
  • Breath Weapon: Azure Dragon Roar, her own Dragon Slayer's Roar spell, which breathes out blue icy flames.
  • Challenge Seeker: As noted by Amarilla, Sapphire never backs away from the challenge, evident of she got thrilled of fighting Laxus and Jura at the same time. She was very looking forward of battling Natsu in the tournament. Sapphire even regularly picks a fight against her mother Kurenai, even though the former loses every time.
  • Cold Flames: As the Azure Dragon Slayer, her blue flames are cold fire, which is way colder than Romeo's own blue flames and Gray's ice powers.
  • Composite Character: Her blue, cold flames are an artifact of Iron117Prime's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover fics. The blue flames are akin to Azula, the first "female trounced by new heroes" character in his fanfics, while the icy part brings to mind Elsa, one of the protagonists of his first fanfic alongside the Turtles.
  • Elemental Absorption: As the Azure Dragon Slayer, her mastery of cold flames gives her the ability to eat fire and ice.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She's shown to be disgusted with Ivan's abuse of Flare. Subverted since it turns out she's not really evil as she's actually spying on Raven Tail for Mermaid Heel.
  • Evil Counterpart: She's this for Natsu as the Azure Dragon Slayer, with her element being blue fire. The author even stated that Sapphire is meant to be this to Natsu due to Ivan forming Raven Tail as the anti-Fairy Tail. Subverted as it turns out that Sapphire is actually an undercover member of Mermaid Heel.
  • Expy: Her real personality shows that she's essentially the Sakura Kasugano to Natsu's Ryu.
  • Fireballs: Azure Dragon Blazing Meteor.
  • Foil: To Sting, another Dragon Slayer who is initially antagonistic towards Natsu despite having been a fan of his a while ago. Whereas Sapphire's antagonism was feigned and she's actually happy to meet her childhood hero, Sting long since suffered a Broken Pedestal thanks to buying into Sabertooth's 'only strength matters' philosophy and takes glee taunting him. Sapphire admired Natsu for his heroic nature, and became a Second Generation Dragon Slayer with a Lacrima, whereas Sting seemed to admire his strength as a fellow Dragon Slayer, and was also raised by a dragon.
  • Good All Along: As it turns out, she was a part of Mermaid Heel all along, having infiltrated Raven Tail for Kurenai.
  • Graceful Loser: Sapphire is not upset at all when she loses against Laxus, in fact, she gives him thumbs up for giving her a good fight with a happy smile before falling unconscious.
  • Honor Before Reason: In Love That Transcends Time, the moment Sapphire sensed Kagura's demonic power, she immediately went to her location. As Sapphire saw Erza managed to defeat Kagura, although the former is extremely exhausted and injured, she refused to attack Erza, saying that it's not her style, internally telling Erza to take care of Kagura.
  • I'm Your Biggest Fan: Sapphire is a big-time fan of Natsu, following all of his adventures, and seeing him as a hero ever since she saw him for the first time in the Port Hargeon when he fought Bora. When she first meets him after her stint in Raven Tail is finished, she even asks for his autograph. It's implied she even modeled her attire after him.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Sapphire excels in hand-to-hand combat, as some of her fire-ice spells involve punches and kicking.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Proved strong, fast, and tough enough to go blow for blow with powerhouses like Natsu, Laxus, and Jura. Special mention for her fight with Orga, proving tough enough to get back up after taking a direct attack from the God Slayer and a grueling fight with both Laxus and Jura.
  • Made of Iron: Sapphire is one of the toughest members of her guild. During the final day of the Grand Magic Games she took hits from Dragon Force-empowered Laxus and Jura with before going one on one with Orga and defeating him. Then immediately after that she went on to have a slugfest with Laxus and while she was ultimately defeated the fight was extremely close. Keep in mind that Laxus is one of Fairy Tail's strongest members and capable of holding his own against Dante and she was more winded then he was when they fought and she still almost beat him.
  • The Mole: Kurenai had sent her to infiltrate Raven Tail.
  • Mythical Motifs: Dragons, befitting for a Azure Dragon Slayer as Sapphire uses blue icy flames.
  • Original Character: Created by the author to fill out Raven Tail's roster of a six-man team for the Grand Magic Games, as well as give Raven Tail their own Dragon Slayer to fit in with Raven Tail being a guild to counter Fairy Tail.
  • Super Mode: In chapter 47: Tournament's End - Strength vs. Power, Sapphire has shown the capability to enter Dragon Force during her fight against Laxus and Jura in the three-way fight in the last day of X791 Grand Magic Games tournament.
  • Thrill Seeker: Ivan, or rather Sid disguised by Ivan's illusion, calls her this after she fights Natsu in Origins and nearly fights Bruni.
  • Walking Spoiler: Not much can be discussed about her without revealing some major spoilers and plot twists.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Like all Dragon Slayers, she possesses severe motion sickness.
  • Wreathed in Flames: A typical trait of Azure Dragon Slayer is her ability to cover herself in flames, whether it's a single fist or her whole body.

    Amarilla
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amarilla_by_celestialrayna.jpg

Sapphire's Exceed companion and her best friend.

  • Foil: To Lector, Sting's Exceed companion. While both are companions to a Dragon Slayer that has (or had) admiration of Natsu, Lector acts as Sting's Yes-Man, agreeing with everything he says and almost constantly belittling any non-Sabertooth guilds and their members. By contrast, Amarilla is consistently polite and friendly to those outside of their guild and actually tries to reign in her companion when she gets too excited.
  • So Proud of You: Amarilla feels this towards her best friend Sapphire, despite losing against Laxus, she managed to gave her all.

Sabertooth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sabertooth_banner.png
Sabertooth is currently the top guild in Fiore.

    In General
  • Adaptational Badass: Vergil joins their ranks during the time skip, which greatly increases their power.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Despite Vergil's presence, his lack of direct participation in the games as of the Naval Battle has negated the benefits of Sabertooth having his services. As a result of that and Fairy Tail and Mermaid Heel getting a proper Adaptational Badass treatment, they ended up worse off in the Grand Magic Games. By the end of the Naval Battle on Day 4, they're sharing second place with Mermaid Heel while Fairy Tail is in first, compared to how in canon they only lost the lead by the end of Day 4 with Sting and Rogue's loss in the battle portion. And the battle portion itself still ends in defeat for Sabertooth, even with Vergil fighting alongside Sting and Rogue. By the end of the fight, Sabertooth has fallen into third place, behind Fairy Tail and Mermaid Heel. And at the end of the Grand Magic Games, they end up in third place overall, with Fairy Tail taking first place and Mermaid Heel second.
  • Broken Ace: During the 7 years when Fairy Tail's strongest members were gone, they rose to become the strongest guild in Fiore. Many of them are also insufferable Smug Supers who bully everyone else out of an innate belief in their own superiority. The fact that they always rely on their overwhelming strength also means most of them fall victim to the same weakness of being too inflexible to last against more unconventional opponents.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of The Social Darwinist, even more so than canon. The entire guild places great emphasis on power, disparaging any form of weakness, be it in combat or otherwise, and enjoy rubbing it in their opponents' faces. As the Grand Magic Games continues, however, the flaws in this mindset start to show even beyond the moral aspect. Since they treat strength as the be all, end all, their tactics in combat are typically just overwhelming their opponents with power, with the occasional member using dirty tactics. Their disdain towards any sort of weakness means that they're unwilling to acknowledge there's any flaw in their approach, which Natsu notes led to Sting and Rogue over-relying on their Dragon Force's and their skills degrading. Their master's zero tolerance for any sort of failure means he's willing to harshly punish, up to expulsion, even promising members like Yukino should they disappoint him, despite Vergil pointing out that failure could allow them to learn and grow in the future. In short, this attitude actually hinders their effectiveness rather than help it as they claim, and results in a guild full of self-aggrandizing bullies that rarely bother to push themselves to improve.
  • Expy: Being an antagonist group in an Iron117Prime fanfic that embodies Social Darwinism will pretty much make readers wonder if Britannia "reincarnated" into another fanfic after their devastating defeat against the Decepticons in Code Prime.
  • Jerkass: Besides Yukino, Rogue, Frosch, and Vergil, of all people, all their members are this.
  • Underestimating Badassery: A major flaw for all of them is this. Because of their emphasis on raw power over skill, they end up thinking that those who don't look strong will be a cakewalk, only for said foes to be highly skilled in other fields, such as speed, intelligence, the ability to adapt, and regulating their power, giving them an edge in a supposedly impossible situation.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Their Guild places far more emphasis on raw power then it does on skill. As a result they usually rely on simply overwhelming their opponents. While this can work at times, when faced with opponents who can match them like Kagura and Dante, it ends poorly for them. It also leads to their members underestimating Weak, but Skilled Fighters like Lucy and Millianna to their cost. The exception to this is Vergil who places equal emphasis on both skill and power and surpasses all his Guildmates in both categories.

    Jiemma Orland
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/human_jiemma.png

The Guild Master of Sabertooth, ruling it with an iron fist.

  • Asshole Victim: Considering how badly he treated the guildmates under his leadership, to the point that he actually considered raping Yukino when expelling her, hardly anyone bats an eye or cares much when Vergil beheads him for nearly killing Sting and Lector. Even his daughter Minerva, who suffered the most out of the Sabertooth members, writes off disposing his corpse as another chore, and admits that she would have killed him herself if given the chance.
  • Adaptational Villainy: As if he wasn't bad enough in canon, here he actually considered raping Yukino along with expelling her! He only didn't because she "wouldn't give him strong children". Then on top of his canon attempt to murder Lector for the "crime" of bearing the Sabertooth guild mark, he tries to murder Sting too when he attacks in rage in full view of the guild and is only stopped by his own death at Vergil's hands.
  • Bad Boss: Sabertooth members fear their Guild Master very much, especially if you fail him. Just ask Yukino. When Sting attacks him with a flurry of Dragon Force attacks after he seemingly vaporizes Lector, Jiemma doesn't hesitate to grab him by the face and try to murder him too, only being stopped by Vergil's beheading.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: While he survived getting blasted in the gut by Sting after Day 4 of the Games to be turned into a demon for Tartaros and slain fighting Sting and Rogue, he's not so lucky here as Vergil is the one to overthrow him as master by beheading him.
  • Dirty Coward: While he's more than willing to bully and abuse people weaker than him like Yukino, when he is confronted by Vergil, he backs down pretty quickly. He also tries to avoid facing Dante when he barges into the inn Sabertooth is staying at, only agreeing to a duel when Vergil tells him that if he doesn't, he should step down as Guild Master in front of the rest of Sabertooth.
  • The Dreaded: Many members in Sabertooth are brash and arrogant in their abilities, but even they fear Jiemma for a reason. Vergil is the only one that dares to speak out against him, and if Rufus and Orga's talk is any indication, it happens a lot.
  • Jerkass: Jiemma's cruel, arrogant, and treats the members of his guild like lackeys.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Even in Sabertooth, Jiemma is this compared to his underlings, but only Vergil has the guts to not only stand up to him but make him back down first with a Death Glare exchange, implying that even Jiemma knows how powerful Sparda's eldest son is. This goes out the window once Jiemma's anger hits its boiling point after the disastrous performance on Day 4, coupled with Rogue's attempt to quit the guild and Vergil once again standing up to him. Most of the guild assumes they're going to throw down right there, and the only reason it doesn't happen is because Lector tries to defuse the situation, seemingly gets killed, Sting attacks Jiemma in a killing vengeful rage, and Jiemma takes his attention off Vergil to try and murder Sting before Vergil kills him.
  • Off with His Head!: How Vergil kills him with Mirage Edge, though in fairness to Jiemma it was a sneak attack while his focus was on attempting to murder Sting.
  • Resignations Not Accepted: He's not exactly happy when Rogue announces that he quits Sabertooth, declaring that they only leave when he says so.
  • You Have Failed Me: Anyone who fails to properly uphold Sabertooth's creed of the strongest will find themselves thrown out. In addition to Yukino after her match with Kagura, Jiemma also expels several minor members whose only crime was getting taken out by Dante when he came a-knocking over said banishment.

    Vergil
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dmc4se_vergil_5.png

The Anti-Villain-slash-Anti-Hero son of an Ascended Demon named Sparda and a human named Eva, and twin brother of Dante. While Dante became a hotheaded but selfless Anti-Hero after demons killed their mother, Vergil grew to be a cool and collected Anti-Villain out for his own gain. During the seven-year time skip, he joined the Sabertooth guild.

  • The Ace: He's established as this for Sabertooth in the time skip. Erza considers Vergil to be Fairy Tail’s biggest obstacle in the Grand Magic Game, which puts him ahead of people like Lucia and Jura.
  • And Then What?: In "Let's Welcome Chaos", Natsu angrily tells him this even when he becomes the King of Hell, what good is all the power if he's gonna sit on an oversized throne as he finds it quite boring. Vergil didn't have an answer at the time. By Devil's Retribution he does. After killing Mundus and taking his throne, Vergil will use the position to quell any chaos since most demons would respect the Son of Sparda who killed a fallen god.
  • Arc Villain: He is the main villain in his namesake arc, where he kidnaps and beats Fairy Tail members to ensure they don't intervene in his fight with Dante.
    • He later became the Big Bad Ensemble in Devil Hand Arc alongside Arkham.
    • The Grand Magic Games arc has him assume this position again, working with Future Rogue.
  • Always Someone Better: To his brother Dante in terms of skill. He discovered his Devil Trigger much sooner and shows greater mastery over it. What's more, Dante has yet to beat him in a one-on-one duel, usually requiring aid from Natsu.
    • He is also this towards Fairy Tail's most elite members, to the point that Natsu holds a specific fear towards him. Even S-Class Wizards like Erza and Mira have been defeated by him, with Vergil's Devil Trigger outmatching Mira's Satan Soul.
    • Though he has yet to encounter Laxus, Freed notes from his fight with Vergil that his power surpasses that of Laxus'.
    • He's revealed to be this toward all of Crime Sorciére, which includes the likes of Jellal, Ultear, and Sheeree, forcing them to retreat when facing them once.
    • He's practically this for all of Sabertooth, being their most powerful member likely including the Guild Master.
    • However, there are a few above him when it comes to power.
      • Makarov, a Wizard Saint and Fairy Tail's guild master, intimidated Vergil with just a glare and a magic pulse strong enough to make him stumble back. Vergil even notes that at full power he couldn't beat Makarov (for now).
      • Gildarts. When he unleashes his full power on Tenrou Island, Natsu notices he might be even stronger than Vergil.
      • Master Hades. Dante finds that not only is he all-powerful and knows how to use it but notes that if Hades could defeat even Makarov, then even Vergil wouldn't be able to scratch him.
      • Acnologia, as the most powerful being in all of Earthland and the slayer of Sparda, naturally surpasses Vergil as well. Vergil himself admits even post-Time Skip that he can't beat Acnologia at his current level.
  • Arch-Enemy: Vergil is already this to Dante but he later became this to Natsu. Considering that Vergil is responsible for his Trauma Button for utterly defeating him and giving him a scar, that's to be expected.
  • Battle Aura: His demonic power is dark blue in color.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Word of God states at the end of Fangs Bared that Vergil would have been the first to come to Lucy's aid when Minerva continued assaulting her after the Naval Battle, but was beaten to the punch by Dante and Natsu, showing that despite being on opposite sides and seemingly not caring on the surface, Vergil does care for his cousin.
  • Blood Knight: Despite his stoicism, greatly enjoys a good fight, sincerely complimenting any opponent that manages to push him.
  • Break Them by Talking: He is an expert in this and since Fairy Tail got some Dark and Troubled Past, that's gonna be ugly.
    • Satan Soul vs Devil Trigger, he uses her younger sister's apparent death that's her fault for it which leaves Mira completely enraged by the guilt, with Elfman also enraged that he used Lisanna to win a fight.
    • Demon vs Spirits, with Lucy about her father and what happened in the Phantom Lord arc, she thought he is trying to make her feel guilty about it, but instead, he knows that's not her fault but why question her to not kill him and while she is horrified, but what really seals it that's she is weak just as her mother that died young, which differently drives the dagger in her heart. Harsher in Hindsight is that's his aunt, uncle, and cousin he talked to.
    • Devil Prince vs Fairy Queen, even Erza Scarlet got it from Tower of Heaven with Jellal the death of her closest friends Rob and Simon even got her, but she tries to get over with that and telling him he is right about that, but that's motivated her to press on.
    • Epic Clash: Natsu vs Vergil, he tries this against Natsu several times that his fire can't melt a marshmallow and why he cares about Igneel since he abandoned him.
    • Rise! Temen-ni-gru!, even Ultear of Grimoire Heart got it when he provoked about her mother Ur abandoning her and took two boys, Gray and Lyon, while she got Meredy, she got enraged, using her Arc of Time in an attempt to rust the Yamato, but to no avail, because the Yamato is a Devil Arm that's immune of time and captures her and use her Arc of Time to complete the ritual to unleash Temen-ni-gru, with Leviatha/Sheeree's assistance by speeding up the time around the seal.
  • The Chessmaster: Its revealed in The Grand Magic Games arc that Vergil is the true mastermind behind the Eclipse plan. Working with Future Rogue, Vergil has successfully played Sabertooth, the Magic Council, the Fiore government, and Fairy Tail all to accomplish his goal of taking down Acnologia and Mundus. What's more no one not even Fairy Tail (who have good reason to be wary of Vergil) suspected him until he revealed himself. Its clear he inherited his father's intelligence along with his sword.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Most of Vergil's fights with Fairy Tail is considered this. Even the Action Girl S-Class Mirajane and Erza Scarlet couldn't defeat him. Even Natsu with Gray and Gajeel are completely overwhelmed by him. It took the combined Super Modes of Devil Trigger Dante and Dragon Force Natsu to defeat him for the first and so far only time.
    • In Towards the Future, he easily defeats a Lightning Cerberus (with it's own element no less) in a display of how strong he's become in the last seven years.
    • Old Friends reveals that he delivered one to all of Crime Sorciére during the Time Skip, forcing them to retreat.
  • Dark Is Evil: Like his twin Dante, he is half-demon. Unlike Dante, he is incredibly cold and in his Devil Trigger, he's very powerful and intimidating. Zigzagged since he is an Noble Demon, and after the Timeskip is the Token Good Teammate compared to rest of Sabertooth.
  • Death Glare: Delivers one hell of a rage-filled look at Minerva after she beat Lucy to near-death and attempted to cheap-shot Natsu in Fangs Bared, causing her Smug Snake persona to quickly fall apart.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
  • Double Weapon: Vergil has gained a new Devil Arm since his last encounter with Fairy Tail: a lightning-generating double-bladed spear named Zeus. It was originally a broadsword named Alastor but evolves when Vergil kills a lightning Cerberus with it and absorbs its energy.
  • The Dreaded: Is this to ALL of Fairy Tail given how he's easily stronger than Dante.
    • After facing him once and being forced to fall back, Crime Sorciére is also cautious about him.
    • Even Jiemma, the master of Vergil's own guild, backs down first when the two get into a confrontation, implying he may have some fear of him as well. In fact, the members of Sabertooth in general are shown to be afraid of Vergil and quickly do what he says when he gets serious.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While Vergil comes off as The Unfettered in his pursuit of greater power, he does have personal lines he won't cross.
    • For example, after witnessing Lucy lose her fight with Flare because of Raven Tail's cheating, he's absolutely pissed and silently admits that if it were up to him he would destroy the former Dark Guild.
    • He also is disgusted with Jiemma trying to humiliate Yukino and stops it.
    • As seen when Minerva takes Happy hostage to force Dante's cooperation, he does not approve of using the weak as shields, citing it as a sign of weakness.
  • Evil Virtues: Is a Noble Demon, and has many more positive traits compared to the rest of Fairy Tail's rogues gallery.
    • Ambitions. Having very lofty goals to strive towards. Though this veers very close to Ambition Is Evil.
    • Determination. Rivalling his brother Dante and Fairy Tail itself in this regard. Compared to their regular enemies that have a Villainous Breakdown upon being defeated, and/or learn to avoid making an enemy of them, Vergil has been beaten no less than three times, and his response to each is to get up, make his exit, and ensure he trains for the next encounter.
    • Honesty. Vergil is an honorable warrior and never uses lies or trickery to win or achieve his goals.
    • Honor. Vergil greatly values honor and always fights in a direct and open manner, albeit to prove his superior strength and skill. As such, he is disgusted by Ivan and Raven Tail in the Grand Magic Games for blatantly cheating and robbing Lucy of their well earned victory. He outright called them pathetic once their deception was exposed.
    • Respect. Although it takes a lot to earn it, Vergil is not above giving credit to anyone he feels deserves it, being rather polite to the likes of Erza and Mirajane upon meeting them. And while it took a while, he eventually to gained begrudging respect for Fairy Tail and their conviction in their beliefs, despite previously falling into Underestimating Badassery. Notably, this puts him at odds with the rest of Sabertooth, who seem determined to belittle everyone they come across.
  • Foil: Has several ones as the story progresses.
  • Force and Finesse:
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: When Freed fought him, he got a taste of his power and find it on the same level as Laxus, or even stronger, much to the shock of both Bickslow and Evergreen, but Levy and Cana too.
  • Genius Bruiser: Not only did Vergil defeat many Fairy Tail members head-on with his demonic powers, but also of his tactical skills, having quickly managed to determine an impressively detailed record of each of their magics and respective traumatic backstories. Makarov even compliments him for being as smart as he is strong.
  • Graceful Loser: Whenever Vergil loses a fight he takes it in stride, accepting the inevitability of defeat and using it as motivation to grow stronger. Notably when Dante beats him at the Grand Magic Games, he congratulates him on achieving victory.
  • Healing Factor: Has one at least as strong as his brothers, shrugging off devastating attacks with little impact.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Played with. Post-time skip he has joined a proper guild, implying he has ceased any criminal activities, however, the guild he joined is Sabertooth.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Develops into this after the timeskip, albeit the heart of gold is very well hidden. He maintains his apathetic might makes right attitude for the most part, but his Pet the Dog moments have become much more frequent, on top of being more willing to dole out compliments to others, internally and externally. He even shares a few moments of friendliness with his brother and cousin.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite being defeated by Dante and Natsu in his debut arc, he managed to get away and return to face them again in the Devil Hand arc, which is usually rare for an enemy of Fairy Tail since they either got befriended or like most guilds are disbanded like Phantom Lord, Oración Seis and Grimoire Heart, but Vergil yet again is able to escape again (but Makarov allowed it), and he joined in the official guild eventually, Sabertooth.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: His signature weapon, Yamato, is a demonic sword given to him by his father.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Vergil might be cocky Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy Smug Super that outmatch even the most Elite Fairy Tail members, he isn't foolish enough to fight Makarov, a Wizard Saint, even with full power he might not win against him (for now, that is) when he warned the Son of Sparda with to ever harm his children again.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: Is the dark to his cousin Lucy's light. He is a classic example of Dark Is Evil due to his dark color scheme and being half-demon, while Lucy is a textbook case of Light Is Good, dressing in bright colours and using Celestial Spirit Magic.
  • Magic Knight: Among the best fighters in this story, being a Son of Sparda with incredible fighting prowess with his iaido/iaijutsu fighting style. The 'magic' comes from using Yamato along with his other Devil Arms and demonic powers, which combine to make him an almost unbeatable opponent.
  • Master Swordsman: Vergil's skill with a sword is superior to even Dante and Erza's.
  • The Mole: As it turns out, Vergil may have joined Sabertooth, but he serves as a spy for the Magic Council. Whether or not he is truly loyal to them is unclear. Origins shows that may not be the case, as it's revealed that he's spying on the Magic Council for King Toma, who's become increasingly worried over the Council's aggressive actions.
  • Mythical Motifs: Demons and devils just like his brother due to his heritage and Devil Trigger.
  • Noble Demon: Vergil has a certain code of honor. If he gives his word to an agreement, he'll hold his end to it. For example, when Adrian/Beelzebub requests that once his part is complete, Vergil will kill him, the human-demon hybrid understands his situation completely and promises it with no strings attached. He also straightforwardly faces opponents, with the main reason he targeted Fairy Tail members being that he simply wanted a 1v1 fight with Dante without interruptions. Best seen by his disdain for Minerva, who he admonishes for claiming to be 'strong' despite relying on hostages and dirty tactics to win her fights.
  • Not So Invincible After All: After spending so long appearing as an invincible force of nature to any single fighter throughout the story, Vergil finally faces an undisputed one-on-one defeat when he falls to Dante on the fourth day of the Grand Magic Games, showing everyone that he can be beaten. Minerva even states that Vergil isn't invincible after witnessing this herself.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: During the Time Skip he encountered all of Crime Sorciére, fighting them all to the point that they were forced to retreat once he brought out his Devil Trigger.
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to the other members of Sabertooth, especially Sting, Vergil is the only one that does not dismiss Fairy Tail as a threat, acknowledging the strength the various members possess, and watching any match with Fairy Tail in the Grand Magic Games with interest to see how much stronger they have become since his last battle with them. He's fully aware of this and is sick of Sabertooth's members never listening to him, even referring to himself as their babysitter.
  • Pet the Dog: Vergil might be a prominent antagonist, but his Noble Demon traits do show once in a while.
    • He promised Adrian/Beelzebub to end his suffering if he helps his goals to unlock Temen-ni-gru. When both Mira and Elfman confront him and bring that up he explains his reasons and the inability to help but also allowed Elfman to punch him for still bringing a boy to the Dark Guild.
    • His anger towards Raven Tail for having to cheat to win against his cousin Lucy.
    • He is the only one to defend Yukino from Jiemma from further humiliation when she is kicked out of the guild. Before she leaves, he tells her she was a fine addition to Sabertooth, despite what Jiemma says.
  • Reconstruction: Of The Social Darwinist, in contrast to his guildmates. Vergil has always maintained that Might Makes Right, and views Fairy Tail's emphasis on The Power of Friendship as nonsense. However, following the timeskip he displays more nuance in what he considers 'strength' and his overall philosophy, acknowledging that strength of will can bring someone further than power alone, however it is derived, even citing it as the main difference between Natsu and Sting. He notes that despite losing her match, Yukino being expelled from Sabertooth is a waste, pointing out that she had the potential and will to improve, both of which are admirable qualities, and that strength isn't confined to what someone can do in the present. Finally, despite fundamentally disagreeing with his brother and Fairy Tail, he respects both their abilities and drive, and is willing to be cordial as a result, making him significantly easier to get along with than the rest of Sabertooth.
  • Recurring Element: He's a complex case of fusing two of Iron117Prime's common character archetypes. When he's introduced, most of the dialogue that's directed towards him is more in line with the Crossover Villain-in-Chief of that story (i.e. You Monster!). Later on in the story, most of his better traits manifest, shifting towards Noble Demon status. Despite being far less of a villainous person, he still gets the chance to off a major Fairy Tail villain: Jiemma. It's the closest thing he does that's the equivalent of the Crossover Villain-in-Chief axing the other faction, though it's more because the master was an Asshole Victim rather than proving that he's a far crueler antagonist.
  • Red Baron: Devil Prince, after the seven years of timeskip.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Dante learns in Edolas that Lucy's counterpart is the niece of his mother's counterpart, leading him to wonder if the same is true back home. Sure enough, Capricorn reveals that his mother, Eva, was the older sister of Layla, Lucy's mother; therefore, Dante and Vergil are cousins with Lucy.
  • Smug Super:
    • Just like Dante he is just as cocky, however, he is even more so as he likes calling himself superior and those lesser than him (most members of Fairy Tail) not on his level. Considering how skilled he is, he's able to back it up most of the time.
    • Averted when it comes to the subject of Acnologia, as when Sting mocks Natsu over being unable to stand up to the dragon at Tenrou Island, Vergil shuts him down and admits even he as he is now (who overpowered all of Crime Sorciére once he got serious) would lose to the dragon.
  • Strong and Skilled: Is among the best fighters in the story, standing above even Dante in terms of power and skill with weapons, especially his swordsmanship. His debut arc has him single-handedly fight his way through most of Fairy Tail, inflicting crushing defeats on the likes of Erza and Mirajane. During the timeskip, his skills proved enough to match all five members of Crime Sorciere by himself, in what they describe as an uphill battle for them. The moment he used Devil Trigger the fight became so one-sided Crime Sorciere (all of whom are major winners of the Superpower Lottery) were forced to retreat.
  • Super Mode: Was the first character to unlock his Devil Trigger.
  • Starter Villain: The first new antagonist of the story's very first major arc.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Hates his guild master Jiemma and has no respect for him and doesn't make any attempt to hide it. While his guildmates respect his abilities they don't like him on a personal level. He's even admitted that he has no interest in making friends, and sees joining Sabertooth as a means to an end. He eventually beheads Jiemma to prevent him from murdering Sting. Later on, he admits that Yukino was the only one with potential, declaring the rest of the guild as idiotic fools that let themselves grow stagnant, with their own ambitions making things more complicated. The minute he no longer needs Sabertooth anymore he dumps them making it clear he's through with the guild.
  • Token Good Teammate: Believe it or not, fits this the best amongst Sabertooth, being the only member who doesn't constantly lord their superiority over other guilds (especially Fairy Tail), and is even annoyed by his teammates (especially Sting) doing so. He's also the only one who stands up for Yukino when she is expelled from the Guild.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Vergil was always a badass but during the Time Skip, he grows so powerful that he was able to drive off all of Crime Sorciére by himself once he went Devil Trigger. Keep in mind that Crime Sorciére has two members who can use Lost Magics, another can copy any form of magic including Lost Ones, and Jellal one of the most powerful mages in the story and Vergil forced them all to flee. Sorano makes it clear that to even stand a chance against him Dante and the others need to have their second Origins unlocked. He shows how far he's come during the fight on Day 4 of the Grand Magic Games, including new personal Devil Arms Zeus, Arbiter, Ifrit, and Mirage Edge (notably for being formed from his own demonic power alone), as well as an evolution to his Devil Trigger.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Following the Time Skip Vergil is shown to be much more reasonable and far less malevolent, in addition to losing much of his Smug Super tendencies. He's also much more willing to dole out compliments in his internal narration, his philosophy having evolved to acknowledge a persons determination and potential to grow stronger, rather than simply their current strength. He's still not exactly nice however shown by his utter dismissal of Lucy and her father passing away.
  • Underestimating Badassery: During the first story, Vergil is extremely confident in his abilities during his battles with Dante and Fairy Tail, easily defeating many of them in combat. However, this comes back to bite him as the various members' determination, stubbornness, and teamwork end up putting him on the ropes. Come Devil's Retribution this seems to have been slowly averted. When Sting boasts that he can beat Natsu, Vergil warns him not to underestimate the Salamander, noting that for all his foolishness, he is the most powerful of the first-generation Dragon Slayers.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: A flashback showed him willing to pass the time playing with Dante and Lucy and happily reading a book full of poetry.
  • Villain Has a Point: He might be a villain that's more than willing to kill Dante and those who stand in his way, but he does make some valid points to back up his worldview:
    • More Fairies Fall, when he faced the Thunder Legion, Freed asked him why is he against Dante, his own flesh and blood. Vergil quickly points out that they don't have room the talk since they betrayed their guild before during the Battle of Fairy Tail event, and didn't even share in their leader's punishment.
    • Demon vs Spirits, during Lucy's first 'fight' with him, she grows increasingly angry as he cuts down her spirits without mercy. He points out that she's the one sending them all against a clearly superior opponent and if she truly wants to prevent them from getting hurt, she should grow stronger.
    • Brothers Rivals Evermore!, he still believes that power is all that matters and that bonds and friendship are of no help if you are weak. Even after Happy gives him a speech about Vergil unleashing the tower and undoing the hard work of both his father and the dragons, saying that Fairy Tail will never lose to him, Vergil manages to prove him wrong, defeating Dante despite his brother fighting for those same friends and bonds. This is further reinforced by Happy's failed attempt to take back the Perfect Amulet, as he is no match against Vergil, proving his point that The Power of Friendship cannot make up for such a gap in strength and skill.
    • A Bittersweet Aftermath, even Makarov admits that Vergil is somewhat correct about the fact that power and might control everything and that's important to be strong to get to live. However, he points out that power isn't everything and you don't need to go on a dark path to obtain it.
  • Villain Respect:
    • In A Bittersweet Aftermath, after he declines Makarov's offer to join Fairy Tail due to having bad blood between many members, not just Dante, he at least acknowledges the strength they have and that he underestimated many of them and got his respect.
    • This continues past the time-skip, where he is unsurprised to hear they survived Acnologia, and scolds Sting for assuming they are weak.
    • Just before the Pandemonium Royale event, he mentally name-drops Erza and Natsu as among the few aside from Dante who can push him.
    • After Dante finally beats him in a one-on-one fight on the fourth day, Vergil congratulates his younger brother on his victory.
    • He respects them enough to request their aid, as he and Future Rogue prepare for war with Acnologia and the Underworld, amassing a dragon army to overthrow Mundus. He remarks that he can be new ruler of Underworld and Fairy Tail to be legendary heroes in Earthland, considering them the best guild for the job... Fairy Tail decline. Vehemently.
  • Weapon-Based Characterization: His main Devil Arm is the Yamato, which he use it with great skill and techniques. Fitting for such a stoic and (outwardly) tranquil man who favors precision.
  • We Can Rule Together: In Mastermind, he reveals he wants form an alliance with his brother and Fairy Tail to defeat Acnologia, the Demon Kings, and even Mundus. Despite making some reasonable points, Fairy Tail refuse to submit or stand aside for anyone.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • He has no problem kidnapping Wendy. When Wendy uses Sky Dragon Roar on him she missed and he slaps her, finding her a nuisance now as he tried to slash her, but Natsu Took The Bullet for her.
    • She used her attack on Vergil again in the Temen-ni-gru during the Devil Hand arc but managed to him this time. Vergil tried to slash her again but this time Ezra got in the way with swords.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Gender doesn't matter to Vergil, so long as they're in his way he'll knock them around. Though given the sheer amount of female badasses in the cast, this is quite justified.

    Yukino Agira
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yukino_agria_gmg.jpg

The younger sister of Sorano Agira, a Celestial Wizard.

  • Adaptational Modesty: Thanks to Vergil's intervention, Yukino is spared from having to strip naked in front of Sabertooth when she is expelled.
  • Cosmic Motifs: As a Celestial Wizard, she has a star motif.
  • Related in the Adaptation: The Devil Hand arc reveals she and Sorano are distant relatives with the Strauss siblings, all of them being descended from one of the priestesses Sparda was forced to sacrifice in order to seal Temen-ni-gru.

    Sting Eucliffe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_sting_anime.png

One of the Twin Dragon Slayers of Sabertooth. He is the White Dragon Slayer, raised by the Dragon Weisslogia.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Much like in canon. When he hears about how Fairy Tail stopped the corrupt Order of the Sword, he boasts that Sabertooth could have handled the job easily in five seconds, and makes mention of picking a fight with Natsu at the "crappy guildhall". He also repeatedly ignores Vergil's advice, when even Rogue bothered to diversify his style by incorporating moves inspired by Vergil. Most damningly, he fell into the trap of using his White Drive and Dragon Force as a crutch, neglecting to improve his base power and plateauing his growth.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: Throughout the final day of the Grand Magic Games he displays a much more serious attitude, as well as greater (if underhanded) tactical sense, knocking out several powerful combatants by sneak attacking them after they were worn down. In the end, it comes down to him and the exhausted members of team Fairy Tail, leaving him reasonably confident in his victory, even as the less worn out Juvia takes up his challenge alone. Which is followed by a Curb-Stomp Battle in water wizard's favor, easily handling everything the angry Dragon Slayer throws at her. Lampshaded by Nero and Gajeel, who note that his approach to actual combat is still exactly the same as when he fought Natsu, not having learned from the experience.
  • Big "WHAT?!": This is his reaction when he sees Natsu eating lightning and entering Lightning Flame Dragon Mode during their match on Day 4.
  • Blood Knight: Greatly enjoys any opportunity to fight and show off his strength. He differs from most examples in the story, since he fights more to revel in his own power than to push himself, actually growing frustrated when his fight isn't one sided in his favour.
  • Freudian Excuse: His obsession with power and becoming the strongest stems from Weisslogia explicitly asking Sting to kill him as a child, in the hopes that doing so would help his power develop. The traumatized Sting became desperate to ensure that such a horrible act wouldn't be in vain, putting him on the path to joining Sabertooth and growing into the Jerkass he is at present.
  • Hypocrite: As Sting has total belief and philosophy of Sabertooth's The Social Darwinist, Dante turned Sting's own philosophy against him when the Crimson Knight said to him if he could kill Weisslogia, his own foster father and dragon mentor, then he should have no problem of killing Lector, who is himself very weak, and that made totally Sting outraged.
  • I'll Kill You!: He screams this repeatedly at Jiemma as he's beating him in Dragon Force when he thinks Jiemma killed Lector, and then threatens Minerva with this if she harms Lector wherever she put him. Minerva, who wants Sting to be fully focused on winning the Games, is more amused than anything at that threat.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: He is the light to Rogue's darkness, being Dragon Slayers of White and Shadow respectively.
  • Mythical Motifs: Dragons. As a Dragon Slayer, his dragon theme is holy.
  • Sadist: Sting shows complete sadism and satisfaction over the people's sufferings, such as when Rufus grievously injured Eve on the Day 3 of the Grand Magic Games, and during the event of Naval Battle on Day 4, he openly laughed when Minerva brutally tortured Lucy.
  • Super Mode: He has two: White Drive, which amplifies his magic power and physical ability, and Dragon Force, which boosts him even further. Unlike First Generation Dragon Slayers, he can tap into the latter at will whenever he wants. However, he's fallen into the trap of using these forms like a crutch, relying on them to overpower foes who could otherwise beat him and neglecting to improve his basic skills.
  • This Cannot Be!: Sting does this as he rants at Juvia in complete disbelief as she completely overpowers him in combat even when he uses Dragon Force, and continuing to ranting that she's just a normal water wizard, not a Dragon Slayer, not having demon powers, special blood ties nor Lost Magic.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He completely looks down on Natsu as inferior to himself, not knowing or caring that even Vergil respects the Fire Dragon Slayer. Vergil says to his face that attitude is exactly why he'll never surpass Natsu. He gets the awakening of his life in their fight on Day 4.
    • This ends up being his undoing in the Battle Royale, as he thinks that Juvia will be an easy win for him since she's not a Dragon Slayer or a half-demon. She ends up proving him wrong as she completely dominates the battle and eventually wins.

    Rogue Cheney
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_rogue_anime.png

One of the Twin Dragon Slayers of Sabertooth. He is the Shadow Dragon Slayer, raised by the Dragon Skiadram.

  • Adaptational Badass: While he always had a sword even in canon, he never seemed to actually use it for anything other than a prop. Here, he took inspiration from Vergil and incorporated said sword into his fighting style with his Shadow Dragon Slayer Magic to create "Shadow Dragon: Sword Style". Mira and Lady also sense demonic magic mixed in with his power.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Not as arrogant as Sting, but he still has the streak given he turns down Sting's offer to "show Fairy Tail their place" by saying he's not gonna go out of his way to pick on those weaker than him. Plus, he also fell into the same trap as Sting by using Shadow Drive and Dragon Force as a crutch rather than constantly striving to improve.
  • Casting a Shadow: As a Shadow Dragon Slayer, he can turn himself into shadow for greater mobility and Intangibility to make himself harder to hit.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Is a Shadow Dragon Slayer, wears dark clothing, and generally looks the part of a dark wizard, yet is easily the nicest member of Sabertooth.
  • Defector from Decadence: He admits to Lector that he and Frosch are planning to leave Sabertooth regardless of their victory or defeat once the Grand Magic Games are over, as they can no longer condone what the guild has become.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: He is the darkness to Sting's light, being Dragon Slayers of Shadow and White respectively.
  • Master Swordsman: In this story, Rogue is expert swordsman, and developed his own swordsmanship style "Shadow Dragon: Sword Style". While Dante acknowledges he's good swordsman, he's nowhere near Erza's level.
  • Mythical Motifs: Dragons. As a Dragon Slayer, his dragon theme is shadow.
    • He even has an alter ego with demonic theme, due to forming from him devouring demonic power to boost his own.
  • Pet the Dog: After Yukino's expulsion from Sabertooth, he is the only member to bid her farewell, and even gives her a parting gift of one million Jewels to help her find her feet.
  • Super Mode: He has two: Shadow Drive, which amplifies his magic power and physical ability, and Dragon Force, which boosts him even further. Unlike First Generation Dragon Slayers, he can tap into the latter at will whenever he wants. However, he's fallen into the trap of using these forms like a crutch, relying on them to overpower foes who could otherwise beat him and neglecting to improve his basic skills.
  • Take This Job and Shove It: While he initially intended to quit Sabertooth at the end of the Grand Magic Games, he decides to cut out the middleman during Jiemma's customary "punishment" after the total defeat of the Day 4 battle and attempts to turn in his resignation right there, even offering Sting and Vergil the chance to join him. Almost everyone else, especially Rufus and Orga, are shocked, though Minerva who already overheard his plan is simply annoyed and Jiemma is insulted Rogue DARED to quit before he threw him out himself.
  • Token Good Teammate: Despite his quiet and reserved manner he's easily the most moral member of Sabertooth, showing discomfort with the ruthlessness of the others and especially Jiemma.
    • When Yukino is expelled from the guild he goes out of his way to give her an envelope filled with one million Jewel as a last gift before she leaves, and further defends his actions when Sting tries to call him on it.
    • He's the only member of Sabertooth who actually seriously considers and agrees (though not out loud) with Dante's claims they're no better than a dark guild with their attitude, while almost everyone else aside from Vergil is insulted by that statement.
    • Most notably during the Naval Battle, Rogue is one of the few (along with Vergil, Lector, and Frosch) that doesn't find amusement during Minerva's beatdown on Lucy and doesn't even come to Minerva's defense when Natsu attacks her in retaliation.

    Lector
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lector.png

Sting's Exceed companion, who wholeheartedly believes in Sting's strength.

  • Cats Are Mean: He's an Exceed and a huge Jerkass to anyone who questions Sabertooth's strength. That being said he's clearly bothered by the crueler actions done by members of Sabertooth showing that while Lector may be a bit of a smug jerk he's really not a bad guy.
  • Disney Death: He's seemingly vaporized by Jiemma for the "crime" of possessing the guild mark after trying to stick up for Sting, Rogue, and Vergil's loss on Day 4, but Minerva saves him with her Territory and keeps him hostage to provide Sting motivation for the final day. However, he's freed with Millianna after Minerva's defeat by Lucia, though Sting is unaware of this.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Rufus' beatdown of Eve on Day 3 of the Games disturbs Lector so much that he doesn't celebrate the victory like he usually does with Sabertooth. He even comments that the guy went too far.
    • Later, during Minerva's No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Lucy, Lector is completely disturbed by what is essentially torture and is shocked to see Sting actually laughing at it.
  • Foil: He is a more smug version of Happy, Fairy Tail's Team Pet. While Happy enjoys getting on people's nerves, it's mostly in a teasing manner as opposed to Lector's smug acr. And whereas Happy shows zero hesitation in teasing Natsu for his Idiot Hero tendencies or the various other members of Fairy Tail for their own quirks, Lector basically acts as Sting's Yes-Man, and nearly every word out of his mouth is to praise his own guildmates' power.

    Frosch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/frosh.png

Rogue's Exceed companion who wears a pink frog costume. Not very bright, but an honest and cheerful soul regardless.

  • The Cutie: Frosch is easily the most innocent and harmless of Sabertooth's members.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Frosch doesn't have much in the way of common sense or obvious smarts, but they're the first outside of Fairy Tail to notice the strong resemblance between Nero and Vergil without knowing of Nero's full origins.
  • Token Good Teammate: Is easily the nicest and most innocent member of Sabertooth.

    Rufus Lore
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rufus_lore_gmg.jpg

A calm and analytical wizard who uses a rare form of Maker Magic called Memory-Make, which lets him weave unique spells from the magic he has memorized.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Rufus brutally and unnecessarily beats Eve during their match due to his anger at Dante.
  • Antagonist Abilities: His Memory Make gives him the ability to copy and cancel any kind of spell he sees and memorizes, giving him an almost unfair advantage in a fight.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: His magic allows him to analyze opponents right down to their heartbeats.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While he's originally amused at the thought of Jiemma punishing Sting, Rogue, and Vergil for losing the Day 4 battle, he's left shocked when Jiemma seems to murder Lector for the "crime" of having the Sabertooth guild emblem.
  • Fatal Flaw: He has two of these, which Gray exploits during his fight with him in the battle royale.
    • First is the usage of his spells. Despite his vast arsenal, Rufus is strictly a long-range combatant and lacks greatly in close-quarters combat, something Gray excels and overpowers him at.
    • Second is his short temper, which Gray triggers with his superior hand-to-hand skills and taunts, making Rufus lash out with his magic, making him lose control of it.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Is greatly angered by Dante's attack on Sabertooth and subsequent insults to their guild, and he decides to take out on his opponent, Eve of Blue Pegasus. Despite being from a completely different guild and having zero involvement in the whole thing, Rufus subjects him to two massive attacks back to back, requiring him to be taken to the infirmary afterward.
  • Psychotic Manchild: Despite his gentlemanly demeanor, whenever things don't go exactly the way Rufus wants to, he lashes out like a child, even seriously injuring someone who had no involvement in why he was angry in the first place. Vergil internally notes that this temper of his has been an issue for a while. This even ends up costing him his match with Gray on the final day of the Games, as the latter gets under his skin with his insults and close combat skills, making Rufus lose control of his magic.
  • Sadist: Rufus shows complete sadism and satisfaction over the people's sufferings, such as when he grievously injured Eve on the Day 3 of the Grand Magic Games, and during the event of Naval Battle on Day 4, he openly laughed when Minerva brutally tortured Lucy.

    Orga Nanagear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orga_nanagear_gmg_2.jpg

A meat-headed member of Sabertooth. He's a Lightning God Slayer that uses high-voltage black lightning, beating out his guild (except for Vergil) in terms of raw magical power.

  • The Ace: Surprisingly, he manages to fit this the best of Sabertooth's elites not named Vergil. Not only does he have his canonical wins in the Grand Magic Games untouched, here he manages to actually beat Jura, albeit only with dirty tactics, and ultimately only goes down after a hard fight with a Dragon Force-empowered Sapphire, and he still managed to lay a good bit of hurt on her and Laxus before doing so.
  • Adaptational Badass: Canonically, Orga made the error to goad Jura into taking his attack head-on only to get his head pounded into pavement. Here, he waits in the shadows until Jura has dropped his guard and taken a decent amount of damage from fighting Laxus and Sapphire before blindsiding him with Lightning God Takemikazuchi, taking him and Lamia Scale out of the battle royale. He then goes on to lay a smackdown on Laxus and Sapphire and manages to force the latter into a hard fight before finally being taken down.
  • Breath Weapon: Lightning God Bellow, the God Slayer equivalent of Laxus' Lightning Dragon Roar.
  • Deadly Disc: Lightning God Discharged Disk.
  • Dreadful Musician: Played for Laughs. He's terrible at singing like Gajeel.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While he's originally amused at the thought of Jiemma punishing Sting, Rogue, and Vergil for losing the Day 4 battle (even outright stating he's looking forward to hanging it over their heads himself), he's left shocked when Jiemma seems to murder Lector for the "crime" of having the Sabertooth guild emblem.
  • Laser Blade: Lightning God Takemikazuchi, a spell taking a form of large curved blade made of black lightning from Orga's hand, in which he used it to take down off-guarded and damaged Jura.
  • Panthera Awesome: Lightning God Black Panther, a spell that takes form of giant black panther made of black lightning.
  • Sadist: Orga shows complete sadism and satisfaction over the people's sufferings, such as when he agreed about why no one can mess with the Sabertooth when Rufus grievously injures Eve on the Day 3 of the Grand Magic Games, and during the event of Naval Battle on Day 4, he openly laughed when Minerva brutally tortured Lucy.
  • Shock and Awe: He's a Lightning God Slayer who uses black lightning to fire beams of condensed electricity at his enemies.
  • This Cannot Be!: As he espouses the superiority of gods to dragons, he's left in angry denial and disbelief as a Dragon Force-empowered Sapphire gets the better of him and ultimately takes him down.

    Minerva Orland
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/minerva_orland.jpg

Minerva is the daughter of Jiemma and one of the most powerful members of Sabertooth. Her multi-dimensional magic, Territory, gives her absolute control over everything she sees. Like the rest of her guild, Minerva embodies her father's creed of "survival of the fittest", cruelly stamping out those who oppose her. She's also a master of the Yakuma Eighteen Battle Gods Magic, a form of summoning magic created by the Yakuma Clan that can call forth lesser gods known as the Eighteen Battle Gods.

  • Actor Allusion: Fangs Bared has her explicitly berate Lucy as nothing more than an insect beneath her. Minerva's English VA Anastasia Munoz portrayed Narberal Gamma who is known for her haughty nature to the point of referring to humans as various insects beneath her.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • Vergil, being much stronger and the most renowned fighter in Sabertooth, much to her frustration, and with just simple glare from Vergil, Minerva gets all scared and doesn't even dare to fight him.
    • Lucia is this as well, especially while using her Devil Trigger, delivering a complete Curb-Stomp Battle, even as Minerva summoned gods to deal with her.
  • Berserk Button: Telling her that she's a coward and weaker than Vergil. When Lucy does it, Minerva gives her a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Averted as Minerva suffered facial damage from Natsu who punched her directly in the face with a fire fist and later Vergil who slammed her face into the ground hard for trying to blow up Natsu inside out. After suffering a brutal No Holds Barrel Beatdown from Lucia, her face has been reduced to a pulp and several of her teeth are missing.
  • Big "WHAT?!": In Past and Future Reveleations, this is her reaction when she saw Devil Trigger Lucia emerging from Mars Triumphus' attack with only few slight embers.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Minerva has a really bad habit of antagonizing very powerful people. This is shown most prominently when she takes Millianna hostage pissing off Nero, Erza, Kagura, and Lucia at the same time. Even worse she pisses off Kurenai, the top Wizard Saint and legendary warrior who is perfectly capable of squashing Minerva like a bug.
  • Child by Rape: Is speculated to be one by Dante, given her father had considered raping Yukino, but didn't due to a Darwinist Desire. Past and Future Revelations hints that may be the case, as Jiemma, a descendant of the Yakuma Clan, was unable to summon the Eighteen Battle Gods and tried to bear a child that could. Minerva eventually succeeded in that regard, but one can't help but wonder if Minerva was the only one he had.
  • Dirty Coward: Vergil calls her weak for using Happy as a hostage to make Dante back off from fighting Jiemma, stating that those who use the weak as shields are weaker than they are. Lucy does the same. Her cowardice is shown fully in Past and Future Revelations when Lucia beats her into the ground for kidnapping and torturing Millianna, and all she can do is beg for mercy and help.
  • Expy: Pretty much is reminiscent of Cornelia li Britannia, especially given the author's work on Code Prime.
  • Hates Their Parent: Her personal thoughts make it clear she has no love for her father Jiemma and would have killed him herself if she had the opportunity though she isn't above planning to get Vergil to take the fall with the Magic Council over doing the deed.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Minerva is hit with this after she brutalizes Lucy during the Naval Battle event and after it. She gets her own brutal beatdown at the hands of an enraged Natsu and even has her face slammed into the ground by Vergil himself. And in addition, due to Minerva attacking Lucy after the event out of pure rage, it causes her points earned in the battle to go down from nine to five, ruining the team's chance to be in first place.
    • Later during the Battle Royale, she gets hit with an even harder dose after kidnapping and torturing Millianna, with Lucia beating her to a pulp.
  • Oh, Crap!: Minerva's Smug Snake persona slips into a look of fear when Vergil stops her from cheap-shotting Natsu in Fangs Bared before slamming her face-first into the ground, his Death Glare causing her to freeze up.
    • Big time in Past and Future Revelations. First is when Nero reveals that he has a sword resembling the Yamato, foiling her attempts to hold Millianna hostage. Then Lucia reveals her Devil Trigger and completely No Sells her Battle God magic before proceeding to pummel her mercilessly.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: While she is a legitimately dangerous mage, compared to Vergil she's a small fry. When she goes up against Lucia, a Devil Hunter on Dante's level she is crushed further demonstrating how out of her league Sparda's sons are to her.
  • Sore Loser: Unable to comprehend that she tied with Lucy during the Naval Battle, who is even weaker than her, she started to attack her in a pure rage with the intent to kill her.
  • Summon Magic: Her Yakuma Eighteen Battle Gods Magic allows her to summon the titular eighteen battle gods for various devastating attacks, and she can even get around the usual Human Sacrifice cost by utilizing Territory's effects, though their overwhelming power is balanced by how she only has enough magic energy to call upon them three times a day. She's the only known person in the world who can cast it as a descendant of the Sole Survivor of the Yakuma Clan.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Her Fatal Flaw is that she really can't take a minute to actually judge if someone's truly stronger than her. The only exceptions would be anyone with Sparda's blood due to her experiences with Vergil, which is why she immediately tries to take out Nero without playing around the second she realizes he has similar power.
  • Unknown Rival: According to Yukino, Minerva is determined to surpass Vergil and become the strongest member of Sabertooth. Vergil for his part doesn't seem to take her very seriously and certainly doesn't view her as a rival. Vergil later effortlessly subdues her and terrifies Minerva just by looking at her, demonstrating just how completely out of her league the oldest Son of Sparda is.

    Dobengal
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dobengal_6.png

A wizard dressed like a ninja, Dobengal ranks within Sabertooth's strongest members.

  • Ascended Extra: Due to Vergil becoming Sabertooth's new master after killing Jiemma, and the rules of the Grand Magic Games forbidding the guildmasters from participating, Minerva chooses Dobengal to be Vergil's replacement on the team.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He gets a chance to show off what he's capable of during the battle royale of the Grand Magic Games.
  • Laser Blade: Manifests one as part of his arsenal.
  • Ninja: His entire appearance and arsenal of abilities fits one to a tee.
  • Self-Duplication: Has the ability to create multiple duplicates of himself, which he can control remotely.
