Order of the Sword

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_order_of_the_sword_insignia.png

A religious order worshipping Sparda.

    In General
  • Adaptational Heroism: Compared to canon, they (except for Mary) have sided with Fairy Tail after the Neo Oracion Seis got the Infinity Clock and they learned that the leadership of the Order of the Sword had been working with them behind the scenes. Mary later sided with Fairy Tail after being attacked by Sanctus.
  • Foil: To Grimoire Heart. Grimoire Heart worships Mundus because they believe he is the One Magic but the Order worships his enemy Sparda.
  • Mythical Motifs: Angels, which form the basis for the appearance of their Angelo soldiers and many of their members after undergoing the Ascension ceremony.

    Sanctus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sanctus_dmc4.gif

Also known as his Holiness, the leader of the Order of the Sword.

  • Arc Villain: Functions as this for the Order of the Sword Arc, alongside Midnight.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Together with Midnight, is the mastermind behind the events of Order of the Sword Arc.
  • The Chessmaster: Alongside Midnight, he orchestrated the entirety of events in the Order of the Sword Arc, having his soldiers clash with Fairy Tail over the clock pieces, ensuring that someone will gather them, and paving the way for the Neo Oración Seis to obtain the complete Infinity Clock. Later chapters reveal just how thoroughly the two planned everything, having killed Jude (via an unwitting Imitatia) to obtain his clock piece, then sending her to Fairy Tail to get the guild to start searching for the rest of the pieces under the guise of it being Jude's dying wish, all while having her spy on and subtly sabotage their attempts to fight back when the time comes. He was even responsible for breaking the Neo Oración Seis out of prison, giving him another set of assets to use. Helps that he's been planning this endgame from the shadows all his life.
  • Death by Secret Identity: He's the first outsider to realize Natsu is related to Zeref (though not able to deduce the true nature of said relationship) due to how Natsu was able to enter the Savior after it had absorbed the Infinity Clock, when only those who were the Clock's original owners (Sparda, Anna Heartfilia, or Zeref) or their descendants would be capable of the same. Since it was a fact that Natsu isn't related to the first two, he could only be related to Zeref. Naturally, he dies in battle with Natsu and Nero unable to reveal this to anyone else.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Sanctus can certainly act the part of a kind, grandfatherly figure who wants to save the world, even if he has to make the hard choices to succeed. Dig a little bit under the surface, though, and his true colors make it clear he's far from benevolent with a sociopathic Lack of Empathy.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Nero finishes him off in The True Saviors by slicing him in half vertically with Masayoshi. His body disintegrates moments later.
  • Hate Sink: He may very well rival Arkham as one of the most remorseless characters in the story. He doesn't care for any of the people killed for his plans, including children like Katja. He also reveals that he killed Lucy's father Jude to get his clock piece. When he revealed it to Imitatia, she is completely surprised and regretful, which he brushes off as no big deal. When his top enforcer Credo turns against him, he strikes him down without hesitation, and attempts to do the same to the rest of the Order, including Mary, who trusted him completely up to that point. And on top of that, he was not above using Sparda's corpse for his own plans. All of this definitely makes him one of the most vile enemies Fairy Tail has ever faced.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: Sanctus believes humanity is too flawed and corrupted by evil to ever hope to overcome itself or Mundus, hence his desire to Restart the World and create a pure, flawless humanity. That he'll have to wipe out humanity as it exists to set the stage for that rebirth is a "necessary sacrifice" in his mind.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Sanctus believes that he's doing what Sparda could only do in half-measures; rather than "just" staving off the forces of darkness and leaving the world always on the brink of collapse waiting for the next great evil due to the weakness of man allowing evil to flourish, he wishes to use the Infinity Clock to Restart the World, creating a new humanity united and pure in purpose to defeat the Underworld. Of course, this is ignoring the fact that he'll happily kill everyone currently living in the world, tear the fabric of reality apart to remake it, and that he'll even use the power of demons and desecrate Sparda's corpse to make it all happen.
  • Super Mode: Sanctus Diabolica, the result of Sanctus combining both the power he gained from the Ascension Ceremony with that of the power of the Devil Sword Sparda. With it, he's strong enough to match up against both Devil Trigger Nero and Lightning-Flame Dragon Mode Natsu, at least for a time.
  • You Killed My Father: Reveals to Lucy he used Imitatia's powers to implant a tumor in her father's brain (without Imitatia's knowledge) in order to get the clock piece he was guarding.

    Agnus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/agnus_dmc4.jpg

The head scientist of the Order of the Sword who stutters a lot.

  • Animal Motifs: Unlike other Angelos like Angelo Credo and Angelo Byro as well the half of Neo Oracion Seis of Caduto forms, his Angelo form's appearance is that of locust and it's kinda ironic since he sees Humans Are Insects.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good:
    • He's rather insulted that Cobra refused to undergo the Ascension Ceremony to obtain demonic power, though he likely didn't know of his underlying reason of fearing Cubellios wouldn't recognize him. Not that the knowledge would have likely endeared him.
    • He's incredulous Gray and Gajeel were able to defeat him, especially when Gray espouses where the Order of the Holy Sword got Sparda's motives wrong.
  • Genius Bruiser: He was able to create Angelo soldiers and other artificial demons through the Hell Gates and even make a total of five artificial Hell Gates, based on the real Hell Gate in the Fortuna city. He is also responsible of Nero's existence as he had Sparda's DNA from his corpse, extracting his reproductive material and surgically placed it into a healthy human woman, which is Nero's mother, and even creating Masayoshi, an artificial Devil Arm of the Yamato. For the brawl part, he was able to hold Nero's Red Queen sword with his hands except pinkies, and later overpowering both Gajeel and Gray simultaneously.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Gajeel kills him in Between Heaven and Hell by stabbing him with his Iron Dragon Sword.
  • Mad Scientist: Responsible for many of the Order's demonic powers and tools, having refined the Ascension ceremony, created artificial demons, and engineered Nero's birth with DNA extracted from Sparda's corpse, which he has strung up in his lab cut open to harvest whatever material he needs.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: He believes humanity as it exists is too flawed and corrupted by evil to ever be free of it, thus his willing participation in the plan to remake humanity into something better. The fact it would kill off the current humanity doesn't register to him as bad.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He didn't expect to lose his fight against Gray, a human with a common Maker Magic, and not even wielding a rare Lost Magic like Gajeel's Iron Dragon Slayer magic.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: He becomes far more intrigued by Nero, who he initially wrote off as a failed experiment, once he starts showing visible development of his demonic powers, and Kyrie once she shows off her Arc of Seraph. This is not good for either of them as their powers make them prime candidates for empowering the Savior.

    Guttman Kubrick
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/guttman-ftanime_7211.jpg

The demon that was imprisoned by the Order of the Sword many years ago, now being set free by Sanctus to work for him.

  • Adaptation Expansion: In canon, his origin was never explained, but here he's confirmed by Sanctus that he's a demon that attacked Fortuna many years ago, and has been imprisoned by the Order of the Sword since then, until Sanctus has set him free.
  • Crying a River: He cried like this in The Battle of Fortuna, when Sanctus' lies are exposed with Morrison saying that he knows even a devils may cry, but finds this one ridiculous.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It's revealed in The Battle of Fortuna, that he was bullied in the Underworld and escaped to Earthland, only to be captured by the Order, then he was manipulated by Sanctus to follow Sparda, but came to regret it as he became the same as his bullies.

    The Savior
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_savior_dmc4.png

A gargantuan artificial demon statue with the appearance of Sparda. that is the Orders greatest weapon.

  • Adaptational Badass: Oh boy, it was no slouch in canon, with Dante being forced to get Nero to fight it from the inside, but here it was designed to channel the powers of the Infinity Clock, making it a full-blown Reality Warper. Word of God has called it 'a walking apocalypse', and it live up to the name, causing flaming rain, acid lakes, metal tornadoes and other apocalyptic events all across Fiore just by existing. It even shrugs off Laxus' use of Fairy Law, and easily defeats Makarov and Gildarts in battle.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: It's a giant statue with the appearance of Sparda, and wields the immense magical and demonic powers of the Infinity Clock.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: It's appearance is based off Sparda (keeping the curled horns), but with a white and gold color scheme along with angelic wings as opposed to Sparda's darker one and bat-like wings. Counts as a subversion, since while the Dark Knight was a case of Dark Is Not Evil, the Savior embodies Light Is Not Good.
  • No-Sell: Laxus attempts to destroy it with Fairy Law in Chapter 23, The True Saviors. To his horror, the Savior survives the attack with barely a scratch on its body.

Holy Knights

    In General
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Those of Zentopia's Legion Corps (except for Byro) actually are part of the Order of the Sword and apparently are childhood friends of Nero, Kyrie and Credo.

    Nero
See his page here for details.

    Credo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/credo_render.png

The Supreme General of the Holy Knights and older brother of Kyrie.

  • The Ace: As the Supreme General of The Order of the Sword, he's their strongest fighter, a shrewd tactician, and respected by all it's members.
  • Adaptational Badass: In Devil May Cry 4, Credo's status as a Master Swordsman was largely an Informed Attribute with the only onscreen fight being a loss against Nero after his transformation. Here he is a Badass Normal Master Swordsman who can give Erza a run for her money and has a Cool Sword with various elemental modes.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Anyone that's either normal or demon or angel that could fight Erza Scarlet to a standstill deserved to be a leader.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Is fiercely protective of his sister Kyrie, furiously demanding Midnight release her and immediately attacks him. Implied in his talk with Mary that this was the catalyst for his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Big Brother Worship: Is on the receiving end of this from not just his own sister, but even the likes of Samuel, Mary and Nero, though the latter tends not to show it openly. Becomes a Broken Pedestal when they realize he was complicit in the Orders more sinister agenda and worked with the Neo Oración Seis.
  • Cool Sword: He can change his sword powers with multiple lacrimas that include.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: He became Angelo Credo as he fought Erza although, in the end, she won, even though Angelo Credo did make their fight look like a Curb-Stomp Battle in his favor.
  • A Father to His Men: Next to his younger sister Kyrie, he is this towards Holy Knights, although he admits that they got issues (Nero's attitude Coco's Bratty Half-Pint, Mary being a Jerkass, Sugar Boy's Elvis Impersonator, Samuel's Insufferable Genius, and of course Dan's Casanova Wannabe antics, he still thinks that they are strong and has his fate in their mission and wouldn't sent them on it if they weren't capable. His last action was to save them from Sanctus but got himself killed, much to their horrifying shock.
  • Manly Facial Hair: He's got a nice trimmed goatee and is the Supreme General of the Holy Knights for a reason.
  • Mirror Character: He is this towards Erza. Both are masters of swordsmanship that are looked up to, and both are A Father to His Men and Team Mom respectively. When dying Credo was about to fall down, Erza caught him and looked at each other's eyes not only as fellow warriors, but also kindred spirits who value the lives of their loved ones, where Erza vowed to request his last wishes to save both Kyrie and Nero, resulting smile when he died.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Gets hit with this hard when he learns that the leader he looked up to facilitated many of their plans by desecrating Sparda's corpse. Gets worse after Midnight kidnaps Kyrie, and he sees firsthand the damage the Savior does to Fiore, somberly admitting he was deluding himself into thinking this was all for a better world.
  • Mythical Motifs: Angels, more like Divinely Appearing Demons. Compared to Angelo Byro's angel-like appearance and even compared to more humanoid appearance to Neo Oracion Seis Caduto's, he has more demonic, yet majestic appearance.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: After realizing how wrong his cause was, he came to stop Sanctus for capturing Kyrie and Nero, but he got killed while attempting to do it, but at least he helped his friends Holy Knights and Fairy Tail how to stop the Infinity Clock by defeating the remaining members of Neo Oracion Seis, as well both Sanctus and Agnus before he died.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Just as canon, but even sadder that his childhood friends that adore him are just helpless to save him.
  • Strong and Skilled: He got both the strength and skill to fight Erza equally, with her even calling his technique 'perfect'. When in his Angelo Credo from his strength and power are enhanced but still got his sword skills fighting Erza that even she won, in the end, it was still a very near loss for her.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His reason for being complicit in Sanctus and the Neo Oración Seis' plans, stating that the current world is filled with injustice and corruption, and that by cleansing it they can pave the way for a new, better one. After the above My God, What Have I Done? moment, he admits that the ends did not come close to justifying the means.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gets called out for being a part of the Order's plans by Nero, Kyrie, and even Mary.
  • Worthy Opponent: Has this to Erza Scarlet, a fellow Master Swordsman in their first fight. It grows in their second fight after she beats him and before he collapses he says to her.
    "Well fought... Erza Scarlet..."

    Coco
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coco_earthland.jpg

Earthland version of Coco and a member of Order of the Sword.

  • Animal Motif: Puppy. She has an puppy-like face, energetic, as well loyal to her friends.
  • Big Brother Worship: She's known Nero for most of her life and views him as an older brother and when he got his demon arm she is the only one showing some concern.
  • Kick Chick: Befitting someone with Super-Speed, greatly favors the use of her legs in combat.
  • Super-Speed: Her magic lets her run at high speeds.

    Mary Hughes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mary_hughes.JPG

Hughes' female Earthland counterpart.

  • Broken Pedestal: She was completely devoted to Sanctus and found it hard to believe he was committing evil acts. Learning the truth shattered her faith in him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: At a young age, she was functionally made a slave by a dark guild and forced to help them steal, in addition to all the physical and emotional abuse they subjected her to. Along with the fact that the Order of the Sword rescued her from this, it's not hard to see where her disbelief at them being up to something sinister comes from.
  • Hopeless Suitor: She has feelings for Kyrie, but while Kyrie considers Mary a friend she only has eyes for Nero. This does absolutely nothing to help Mary and Nero's strained relationship though Mary accepts it in the end.
  • Smug Snake: Is incredibly condescending to Fairy Tail in light of their current reputation. This attitude does not let up even after they repeatedly defeat her and her comrades, resorting to increasingly underhanded tactics to avoid defeat. She ends up losing this attitude near the end of the arc.

    Sugar Boy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sugarboy_earthland.png

Sugar Boy's Earthland version who behaves like a certain 70s rock star.

  • Berserker Tears: When Credo got fatally impaled by Sanctus using Masayoshi, Sugarboy, alongside Samuel and Dan tried to attack him and vow to make him pay, but all in vain.

    Samuel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/samuel.PNG
Click here to see his battle form

An Exceed knight of the order and one of its finest minds.

  • Berserker Tears: When Credo got fatally impaled by Sanctus using Masayoshi, Samuel, alongside Sugar Boy and Dan tried to attack him and vow to make him pay, but all in vain.
  • Big Brother Worship: Calls Credo one of the people he admires the most albeit after discovering the Orders darker secrets.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Like in canon, he prefers to be called by his name than Sammy. The only exception is Kyrie.
  • Dual Wielding: Here he wields two dual swords and could fight Lady (used Steel Devil Slayer Magic) easily.
  • Genius Bruiser: Very intelligent, often insufferably so, but he has a Battle Form nearly as muscular as Panther Lily's and uses swords in combat.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He might be rather insufferable due to his confidence with calculations and logic, but he truly cares about his friends and like in canon grows to genuinely respect Panther-Lily.
  • Master Swordsman: In canon, he is unarmed but here he wields dual swords, with the weapons likely in emulation of Credo.

    Dan Straight
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dan_straight.png

The Spearman of the Order.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Just as canon. He's this to Lucy and apparently, to Kyrie as well at some point (to a point that she even shudder by his name alone), he does this to Lisanna as well, much to Natsu's anger and annoyance.
    • Both Nero and the rest of the Holy Knight are irritated but not surprised by that.
  • Berserker Tears: When Credo got fatally impaled by Sanctus using Masayoshi, Dan, alongside Sugar Boy and Samuel tried to attack him and vow to make him pay, but all in vain.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: He falls victim to this as seeing Lisanna in her bikini (Animal Soul: She-Cat) makes him drop his offense and defense, leading to his defeat by Natsu beating him up.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Not even Dan would flirt with a demon.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Yeah, the guy isn't particularly well-liked due to his Casanova Wannabe tendencies, and even Kyrie finds him difficult to stand.
  • With Friends Like These...: When Kyrie makes Nero promise her to look after all their friends. Sammy, Coco, and even Mary, but when Nero brings up Dan, she comically shudders at just the mention of him with saying "Yes...even Dan.", likely because of his Casanova Wannabe status no doubt.

Other People of Fortuna

    Kyrie
See her page here for details.

Zentopia

An religious organization in Fiore, and acts as independent state. It has now merged with another religious organization from Fortuna: The Order of the Sword.

    Byro Cracy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/byro_cracy.png

A member of the Zentopia and Earthland counterpart of Byro. After Sanctus' death, Byro has been promoted into the rank of Supreme General of the Holy Knights.

  • Adaptational Badass: While he was plenty badass in canon, here it was mentioned that he declined and offer to be made a Wizard Saint, something reserved for the most powerful mages around. He also undergoes the Ascension ceremony, giving him an Angelo form, providing a bigger boost than in canon.
  • Anti-Magic: His power lets him emit a field that neutralizes any magical or demonic power caught within it. This can even be directed, letting him target foes.
  • Badass Long Robe: Gains one in his Angelo Byro form, complete with a hood.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: While he is absolutely devoted to the Archbishop of Zentopia, as the mans mental state deteriorates, he begins to take orders from Sanctus. He grows increasingly concerned with orders that leave innocent people in danger, yet not wanting to disobey the man his beloved leader trusted to lead in his absence.
  • Declining Promotion: At chapter 13 "The Holy War Begins", Dan stated that Byro was offered to be Wizard Saint, but turned it down so that he can be in Zentopia's service.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Takes apart Principles Zealot and Undying Loyalty. He is absolutely devoted to the church of Zentopia and it's cause, having great faith in their leaders judgement, and is willing to give up his life if that ensures their missions success. The problem is that he expects this same level of devotion from his allies as well, being surprised when they object to being put in the cross-fire from one of his attacks and is willing to treat them as enemies for merely attempting to negotiate with their adversaries and question their given orders. The members of Fairy Tail also point out his willingness to make hard decisions just means he is unwilling to consider alternatives that don't involve bloodshed (with Dante in particular pointing out that sacrificing other without their consent is functionally murder) and that his dismissal of emotions is really just a way to avoid feeling guilt. What's more is that his absolute belief in his leaders judgement means that he ignores blatant evidence that they may not be as benevolent as they appear, and only escalates the confrontation when Fairy Tail offer to talk things out. Overall his dedication to such principles make him a self-righteous, inflexible, Hypocrite unable (or just unwilling) to acknowledge the flaws in his attitude and cause.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Downplayed in that he's not evil, just a Knight Templar, but he cares greatly for his octupus Kanaloa, referring to him as a comrade rather than a pet. While he shows little hesitation attacking with the Order of the Sword members in the crossfire, after Kanaloa is injured he allows him to shrink down, gently telling him he did well and to rest.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: As Angelo Byro, his eyes glow a dark purple.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: As Angelo Byro he has white robes along with white and gold armour, and is acting to fulfill a holy mission. Is also a case of Light Is Not Good.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: In his fight with Dante, being a Knight Templar on a holy mission against a half-demon especially when they use Angelo Byro and Devil Trigger, emitting purple light and dark red auras respectively. Happy even notes that it's a battle between a devil and an angel, with those watching actually rooting for the former.
  • Logical Weakness: While his Anti-Magic can deprive opponents of any magical or demonic powers, those with sufficient physical power and combat skill are still very much a threat, as seen in his fights with Gilarts and Dante. Downplayed in that he is an expert in all forms of combat, so this isn't much of an issue. He also cannot use it while in his Angelo Byro form, since doing so would remove his power as well.
  • Perpetual Frowner: The guy never smiles, and his only attempt at doing so is either scary or ridiculous-looking.
  • Power Gives You Wings: As Angelo Byro he gains three pairs of feathered white wings, allowing for Flight.
  • Rank Up: After Sanctus' death, Byro has been promoted into the rank of Supreme General of the Holy Knights by the Archbishop, the new leader of the Order of the Swords.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Subverted, in that he's not really a villain, but his Angelo Byro form gives him gold spikes on his shoulder pads.
  • Super Mode: After participating in the Ascension Ceremony, Byro has become a demon, achieving form known as "Angelo Byro".
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Zigzagged, as he is a physically very powerful monk who has stated to have extensive training in every form of combat, showing impressive use of his Anti-Magic along with his staff. Undergoing the Ascension ceremony and gaining access to Angelo Byro boosts his power greatly, and gives him Flight. However doing so deprives him of his Anti-Magic, and Dante notes he's only had this form for a short time, something that shows in their fight, quickly exhausting himself and losing since the latter has more experience with his own Super Mode.
