Haganai revolves around the daily lives of the seven members — six students, one (child) adviser — of the Neighbors Club, a school club within St. Chronica Academy whose ostensible goal is to help its members learn social skills and open up to society.

Kodaka Hasegawa

The main protagonist and a second-year transferee to St. Chronica after he and his younger sister Kobato decide to stay behind when their father Hayato went to America to work. Unfortunately, his naturally blond hair (inherited from their deceased English mother Airi) earned him an unwanted reputation as some delinquent. He, together with fellow loner Yozora, is a co-founder of the Neighbors Club.

• Accidental Pervert: Constantly. Twice towards Sena — completely naked during his visit to the Kashiwazakis' mansion in Season 1 Episode 8, and then topless during the Beach Episode. Subverted with Kobato (his little sister, of course), whom he doesn't care about seeing naked (and neither does Kobato). He also stumbles in on Kate in the shower, but since it was clearly an accident and he apologizes immediately she doesn't care. It got so bad every girl in the Neighbors Club brings up a time when he's seen her naked, except for Rika, which is not accidental as Rika later makes him look at her body in Volume 9. He had also seen the student council members in their undies as he accidentally walked in their clubroom.
• Affectionate Nickname: His childhood friend called him "Taka". Yozora immediately recognized him on his first day at school.
• Arranged Marriage: With Sena, as an agreement between their fathers in the past.
• Attractive Bent-Gender: In the short Imagine Spot of Season 1 Episode 3.
• Berserk Button: Hayato may be an absentee parent (justifiable with his career as an archaeologist), but Kodaka doesn't take too kindly to his father being called "trash". Even if that was just a light-hearted quip from Pegasus.
• Big Brother Instinct: Towards his younger sister, Kobato, and later on towards Maria.
• But Not Too Foreign: He is born of a Japanese father and a British mother.
• Cannot Tell a Joke: The guy is really bad when it comes to jokes, which makes him stand out from the rest of his clubmates. One of the few things Yozora and Sena will readily agree on is that he sucks at comedy.
• Catchphrase: "Eh? What was that?" whenever one of the girls mutters romantic interest toward him. It could just be passed off as actually not hearing them at first, but when their interest becomes more overt, he continues spouting the same line.
• Celibate Hero: Kodaka states many times that he isn't interested in dating because he believes he should focus on making friends first. He also doesn't want to risk any of his relationships in the Neighbors Club changing if he pursues romance. This becomes increasingly problematic as the series goes on because the girls are becoming more and more openly attracted to him and Kodaka's attempts to avoid romance almost tear the group apart.
• Chick Magnet: He's rather popular with girls that favor seemingly tough guys without being actually dangerous.
• Childhood Friends: The Only Friend he ever had was a boy he called "Sora", but Kodaka had to move away and never saw him again. Later on, he realizes that "boy" was actually Yozora. While Kodaka is surprised, he isn't as excited Yozora expected him to be. He does care for Yozora and regrets he left her without saying goodbye, but he doesn't value the time they shared in the past as much as Yozora does. Once she starts to understand they don't share a special bond after all, Yozora starts to fall into depression.
• Clueless Chick-Magnet: At least within the Neighbor's Club. Ultimately subverted, however — he's just pretending to be clueless.
• Comically Missing the Point: When Sena hands off a galge to him, he spends the entire playthrough hanging out with the Bromantic Foil rather than talking to the girls and is completely satisfied even when he gets a Downer Ending because it means he still has that friend.
• Did I Just Say That Out Loud?:
  • In NEXT Episode 2, Kodaka runs into Rika in the clubroom without her glasses. She tells him her vision is actually perfect, then asks him what he thinks of her. He has a brief Imagine Spot where he says she's like a wildflower blooming on a hill, and right in his strike zone. In the English dub, he frankly states that "As for whether I'd hit that or not, I'd have to say: Hells yeah." Rika's face then turns red, and he earns himself some slight scorn from Yozora, Sena, and Yukimura.
  • Kodaka pulls this off again 5 episodes later, when he comments that Rika would look better with cute clothing, as opposed to the school uniform which she seemed to wear all the time. Once again, Rika's face turns red and none of the other girls are too pleased about hearing that.
• Dismotivation: His Selective Obliviousness takes some effort to maintain, preferring the friendly Neighbor's Club to actually getting into any sort of relationship.
• The Ditherer: The wishy-washy type. His biggest flaw is his habit of avoiding or outright ignoring things he doesn't like or make him uncomfortable. At first, it's subtle, such as him deliberately turning a blind eye to the harem elements around him and trying to play dense towards Yozora's and Sena's feelings for him. However, it's terrible when he's faced by something he can't avoid. When Sena abruptly confesses to him and doesn't let him play dumb, Kodaka runs away and doesn't return to the club for over a week. It takes Rika confronting him for Kodaka to finally accept he must answer the girls' feelings.
• Don't You Dare Pity Me!: He first met "Sora" when she intervened on some bullies ganging up on a "weakling" like him. He immediately turns his aggression toward her for calling him a weakling.
• Epiphany Therapy: At the end of Season 1 Episode 11, seeing Yozora with her hair cut short on their first day of school after summer break finally made him realize that "Sora", his Forgotten Childhood Friend, is her all along.
• Expository Hairstyle Change: Defied. As he explains to Sena in Season 1 Episode 11, he refuses to dye his naturally-blond hair because this is his only reminder of his late mother Airi, an Englishwoman — even if it turns him into an outcast.
• Expy: A misunderstood Nice Guy with the Face of a Thug and The Unsmile who is into housekeeping, pursued by a vicious Tsundere with lots of hang-ups, an energetic Cloudcuckoolander and a gorgeous Lovable Alpha Bitch? Sounds like Ryuuji Takasu.
• Face of a Thug: He inherited his father's tough facial expression and his mother's blond hair. Because of his appearance and a few misunderstandings on his first day at the academy, his classmates are under the impression he's a Japanese Delinquent and always run away without giving Kodaka the chance to explain himself. Those who do get to know him better understand Kodaka is a Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold who just wishes to make friends.
• Family Eye Resemblance: He got the angry-looking Tsurime Eyes from his father, which he hates.
• First-Name Basis: Yozora and Sena instantly demand that he call them by their first names. Normally he'd be much more polite and reserved.
• First-Person Smartass: More so in the light novels than the anime, where his reactions are more low-key and he has a tendency to snark.
• Friendship Moment: With Yozora in his childhood and Rika in Volume 8 of the novels.
• Made of Iron: Kodaka can take a huge amount of punishment from Rika's balls which are strong enough to dent concrete.
• Mistaken for Dyed: He has naturally blond hair thanks to his English ancestry. This alienates him from his peers, who all mistake him for a delinquent on sight because of this.
• Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: His schoolmates assume he's a vicious delinquent, on account of his blond hair which contrasts with his Japanese face (a result of mixed-race parentage), as well as a very bad first-day-at-school impression, when he comes in looking haggard, barely making it to school in time, then staggering in fatigue towards his teacher with his arms forward and fingers curled (making his classmates assume he is about to attack their teacher) after introducing himself. It doesn't help that he almost always looks like he's pissed off or annoyed.
• Never Got to Say Goodbye: He didn't have the chance to say goodbye to his childhood friend Sora before he moved away because Sora didn't show up the day Kodaka intended to announce he was leaving. Turns out Sora was Yozora, who was too embarrassed to see him since she was wearing a skirt that day. Both deeply regretted not saying goodbye to each other back then.
• New Transfer Student: Changes schools in his second year due to him and Kobato choosing to stay in Japan while their father goes abroad.
• Nice Guy: Contrary to his classmates' instant assumptions, he's a genuinely good-natured, affable guy who prefers a good company.
• No Guy Wants to Be Chased: The poor guy is put off by Rika's promiscuously open advances and fails to realize any genuine interest in him she may have. This is notwithstanding the fact that he has shown some signs of attraction towards Rika when she's not being perverted, though he's yet to display any explicit romantic intentions.
• Obfuscating Stupidity: Turns out he is not so clueless — he is just pretending that he is.
• Oblivious to Love: Appears to be a straight case of this in the beginning, but ultimately subverted when it turns out he's deliberately eluding every attempt by the girls to catch his heart.
• Only Sane Man: Kodaka seems like the one sane and normal member of the group, if a bit dense. However, like Kobato, he actually holds people at arm's length, refusing to get close or acknowledge things he doesn't want to.
• Parental Abandonment: His and Kobato's mother Airi is dead, and their father Hayato works abroad.
• Promotion to Parent: He has to raise Kobato, cook meals for her, and put up with her vampire-loli fantasies.
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Yozora and Sena's red.
• Second Year Protagonist: He's in his second high school year which means he doesn't have to deal with college exams yet and the cast can have both seniors and junior freshmen.
• Selective Obliviousness: When his failure to recognize the girls around him grows too strong, Rika begins to suspect that he's going out of his way to never, ever notice how they feel. Further events make it plain that he knows and is deliberately ignoring the issue. This culminated with Rika confronting him at the end of Volume 8, after he made it clear he'd rather ignore their feelings. Rika was willing to pretend it never happened, but warned him that sooner or later some other girl will take a shot, and he really needed to be ready for that. He wasn't: Sena openly confessed and he ran away.
• Serious Business: With takoyaki.
• Shrouded in Myth: Has the unfortunate reputation of being a Japanese Delinquent thanks to his blond hair and an intimidating facial expression (especially when angry). It also doesn't help that he goes to school with the lower ends of his pants folded up to below his knees and wears loafers. Then the rumors keep growing. From the second novel:
  "There's all kinds of rumors like how I supposedly raped Yozora and Sena, forced Yukimura to be my errand boy, raped Rika too, made a move on a sister, and even that I make a little girl walk around school in goth loli clothes..."
• Supreme Chef: His food is good according to Maria and Kobato, and in Episode 10 he laments that of all the club members, he's the only one that can cook.
• Tsurime Eyes: Subverted. His eyes are small and sharp, which is why people tend to mistake him for an angry and violent delinquent. In reality, Kodaka is a Nice Guy and hates how the eyes he got from his father cause him so much trouble.
• Unreliable Narrator: In the light novels, we're led to believe that he's Oblivious to Love, but he's actually deliberately trying to turn a blind eye to the girls' feelings for him.
• The Unsmile: His smile comes across as menacing.
• Unwanted Harem: Kodaka refuses to pick one of the girls in the club to date, despite the obvious fact that every single one of them is in love with him.
• Wrong Genre Savvy: For a moment at the start of the story, Kodaka thinks he might be the hero in a supernatural Shōnen Demographic show. Nope, he's the main character in a Harem Anime with socially-challenged hot girls in the mix. Following this, he refuses to recognize that he's in a harem anime rather than pure Slice of Life.

An abrasive loner with a strange hobby of talking to an "air friend" named "Tomo". After a small talk with Kodaka who caught her "talking" to "Tomo", she becomes a co-founder of the Neighbors Club.

• A-Cup Angst: She frequently derides Sena's "cow udders", which are the source of her nickname "Meat". One of their early arguments had her insisting that she's "not that small" when Sena snarks at the "washboard's" jabs, and then threatening to kill every girl with a larger bust so that she'd be the most well-endowed by default.
• All Girls Want Bad Boys: When playing an otome game, Yozora avoided all the love interests except for the aloof Jerk with a Heart of Gold delinquent. Everyone seemed to pick up why Yozora would like that type of guy, expect for Kodaka of course.
• Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: A deconstruction. She's distant from her classmates and her looks are appreciated at least, but then it turns out she's so distant because she's a complete Jerkass who can't socialize with others.
• Berserk Button: Being compared to bullies is a sure-fire way to get her genuinely angry.
• Bifauxnen: After cutting her hair short, everyone in the club (minus Kodaka and Sena) confuse her for a pretty boy. When Rika dresses her up in a male school uniform, even Sena can't resist her androgynous charm.
• Big Sister Bully: To Maria, in a surrogate way. Yozora behaves like a mean older sister who bullies her bratty little sister to put her in her place.
• Big Sister Instinct: Oddly enough, she has a bit of this towards both Maria and Kobato, particularly the latter.
• Boyish Short Hair: When she was a child, she had short hair and liked to dress like a boy. This made it hard for Kodaka to tell she was a girl. Later on, she cuts it short again, suiting her aggressive personality.
• Break the Haughty: When Sena point-blank tells her that she's not going to win Kodaka's heart just by being his Childhood Friend and she, Sena, is actually engaged to him, Yozora doesn't take it well at all.
• Brutal Honesty: When asked why she plagiarized the movie script, she says it was because she figured the club was full of idiots who wouldn't realize what she had done.
• The Bully: Even though she hates being compared to bullies, she herself is quite the vicious emotional bully.
• But Now I Must Go: At the end of the second season, Yozora leaves Kodaka and the others. Ultimately subverted (as per a blink-and-you-miss-it scene), because she actually contacted Kobato to let her hide away in the Hasegawas' residence.
• Byronic Heroine: Aloof, unsociable, manipulative and ultimately, a girl hiding multiple emotional scars.
• Cannot Spit It Out: She instantly recognized Kodaka as "Taka", but couldn't bring herself to say anything due to frustration over the fact that he doesn't seem to remember her. Though, to Kodaka's defense, not only was her hair much shorter back then, but he also thought she was a boy. It isn't until he sees her after she cuts her hair short that he realizes that she was "Sora".
• Character Development: It takes very long, but it finally happens. By the end of the novels, she decided to finally let go of her obsession with Kodaka, start anew, and finally come out into the open and accept Sena as the best friend she always wanted.
• Character Tics: Twirling strands of her hair.
• Childhood Friends: She was "Sora", Kodaka's Only Friend when they were children until he had to move away. Yozora never forgot about him and once she met him again, founded the Neighbors Club just to be close to him. Yozora actually wants a Childhood Friend Romance and assumes Kodaka must feel the same way, but he doesn't seem interested in her that way even after he recognizes her. When she realizes that, in real life, childhood friendship isn't an instant romance button, she has one big Heroic BSoD.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: Will often hit Kodaka if he stares too long at one of the other girls, or makes a comment that suggests he's interested in them. She also stopped Sena and Kodaka from kissing in a king's game, claiming it was indecent, despite having been the one who wrote that order. ^note In a king's game, players draw lots/cards, and whoever is the king can order the other players, based on their numbers, to do things. In this case, Yozora wrote a note stating number 3 and the king would have to kiss, but it backfired on her when Sena became the king with Kodaka was number 3, and drew the note with the kiss.
• Club President: Of the Neighbors Club. Yozora was the one who came up with the idea of the club and is in charge of organizing all their activities.
• Consummate Liar: The other club members, save Kodaka and Rika, are pretty much at her mercy.
• Cool Big Sis: A surrogate example towards Kobato, whom she frequently protects from Sena's advances.
• Cosmic Motifs: Her family name translates as "crescent moon", and there's crescent moon imagery sprinkled throughout her wardrobe. Her given name means "night sky", enforcing this even further.
• Cuteness Proximity: Cats.
• A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 1 of the Shobon! spinoff manga, where she snarks at the situation of the Club but is nevertheless willing to put up with them as long as Kodaka is happy (and so is she)... and develops a fetish for having her armpits touched.
• Dialogue Reversal: The first time Yozora gets cut down to size by Sena, she angrily storms out of the room crying.
  "Stupid Sena Kashiwazaki!"
• Entitled to Have You: Perhaps due to her clear social cluelessness, Yozora simply assumes that being Kodaka's childhood friend means that him loving her back is inevitable regardless of anything else that happens.
• Expository Hairstyle Change: After Kodaka accidentally burning her hair with a firework near the end of summer break, Yozora returns to school with her hair cut short. At this very moment Kodaka finally recognizes her as "Sora", the "boy" who used to be his only childhood friend. This also marks the point where she starts to show her deredere.
• Evil Sounds Deep: "Evil" is a stretch, but she is quite the bully (despite her staunch denial of the label) and Inoue provides her the deepest voice amongst the main cast.
• Female Misogynist: She shows signs of this, particularly hating girls who attract many guys like Sena and Hinata. Yozora claims she just can't stand popular girls. Actually, Yozora came to hate women in general due to the circumstances of her parents' divorce and her mother's abuse, which led to her dressing, talking and acting like a boy.
• Fetish: Develops one in the Shobon! spinoff for having her armpits touched.
• First Girl Wins: She assumes this as an indisputable fact. She was the first girl in the club to interact with Kodaka, as well as his long-forgotten childhood friend. She's only able to mostly control her envy of the other haremettes by constantly telling herself that they stand no chance, because she met Kodaka first. When she discovers that Kodaka met Sena when they were toddlers, Yozora falls into utter despair. The trope is ultimately averted at the end of the novels; Kodaka rejects Yozora and she moves on by accepting Sena as her new Best Friend.
• Foe Romance Subtext: Her constant squabbles with Sena imply something beyond their name-calling and the occasional catfight, a fact that wasn't lost on Kodaka. This goes even further at the end, when she and Sena finally accept each other as best friends.
• Forgotten First Meeting: She was the "boy" who once saved Kodaka from, and then joined him in fighting, a bunch of bullies when they were children. They quickly became friends, but then Kodaka had to move just when Yozora was confident enough to dress up as a girl in front of him.
• Freudian Excuse: There's a reason behind her strong hatred towards popular, attractive girls and bias towards same-sex friendships. Her mother's best friend stole her husband away. Yozora took her mother's side, but the woman was left so emotionally unstable by the betrayal that she became abusive towards Yozora.
• Friend to All Children: Season 1 Episode 12 reveals that she actually has a soft spot for children, going so far as to put up with Maria's bratty attitude while she tried to politely ask for her permission to lend her favorite naptime room to the Club before finally losing her patience. She's also shown to be protective of Kobato, and is often the first to try to keep Sena in check.
• Friendship Moment: She has at least two. One occurs early on when she says she won't tell Kodaka her nickname, because nicknames are something only friends give to each after. Not long after, she gives Sena the nickname "Meat". Insulting, but still a nickname. Later, in Volume 6 of the novels, she shows genuine remorse over hurting Sena's feelings, unlike when they seem to be mostly playing around. She's apparently pretty happy when Sena's mood improves thanks to Kobato. And come Volume 10, she and Sena finally find the courage to admit to each other that all this time they liked each other better than their words conveyed.
• Giver of Lame Names: "Tomo-chan" means "Friendy", more or less.
• Green-Eyed Monster: While on a roller-coaster ride with the rest of the Club, she starts blurting out some of her resentment towards Sena, blaming her for things going wrong in her life and Kodaka not paying enough attention to her. Nobody hears any of that part instead of the creepy chanting about cursing and killing she starts after that in her panic.
• Guile Hero: Easily plays tricks on Sena and Maria (not that it's difficult), but where she really shows her stuff is when she utterly demolishes Yusa Aoi in a battle of rules lawyering. She gives about 4 valid counter-arguments for every point that Yusa makes, this completely breaks Yusa and sends the girl running away in tears.
• Hate at First Sight: She despises Sena immediately and is consistently horrible to her, though there are occasional hints that she is as much of a friend as she's currently capable of being.
• Hates Wearing Dresses: Ever since childhood, she has found wearing skirts embarrassing. When she doesn't wear her school uniform, she either goes around in pants or shorts.
• Heroic BSoD:
  • She almost completely shuts down when Kodaka and Sena are revealed to be engaged through an Arranged Marriage since kindergarten. Particularly because this takes away her "privilege" as the childhood friend. Not even Sena hitting her with a flyswatter could snap her out of it.
  • She enters an even bigger one after Sena confesses to Kodaka. It gets so bad that she runs off to Kodaka's house and refuses to return to school for days.
• Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Gleefully builds her success and happiness on the pain, insecurity and tears of others without a sliver of remorse.
• Hoist by Her Own Petard:
  • Yozora's main reason for creating the club was to be reacquainted with Kodaka, then Sena joined the club. And that's just the beginning.
  • She had Yukimura wear a maid's uniform for her own amusement. It wasn't so funny for her when Yukimura was eventually revealed to be a girl.
  • Gets scared by her own scary story in Episode 10.
• Humanizing Tears: At the end of Season 1 Episode 11, even a total hardass like Yozora cannot hold back her Tears of Joy after Kodaka finally recognizes her — with her hair cut short — as his forgotten childhood friend "Sora".
• Imaginary Friend: Used to have one, named "Tomo-chan".
• I'm Not Here to Make Friends: The only reason she formed the Club in the first place was to get closer to Kodaka.
• Improbable Weapon User: A fly swatter.
• Insult of Endearment: Despite being given the insulting nickname of "Meat", Sena confessed to Kodaka that she's secretly happy with it because she has never been given a nickname before.
• It's All About Me: Extremely self-centered to sociopathic levels, easily upset when things don't go her way, to the point of throwing a tantrum, and holds extreme hatred against "popular" people, no matter whether they deserve it or not.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Leaning more on the Jerkass side, with a few hints of her Hidden Heart of Gold occasionally slipping through. She's self-centered and a bitch, true, but she isn't without redeeming qualities. She has a soft spot for kids and cats, and has shown genuine remorse for her actions and pranks on occasion.
• Kindhearted Cat Lover: Though not exactly kindhearted, she does love cats and is positively delighted when Kodaka takes her to a cat cafe.
• Lack of Empathy: Subverted, she does show some remorse sometimes when a joke goes too far.
• Love Hungry: She feels entitled to Kodaka since she's known him the longest. Her usual methods are Relationship Sabotage and being a Manipulative Bitch. That's about as far as she's willing to go though since she doesn't outright hate the rest of the group.
• Loving a Shadow: Her obsession with Kodaka is more about getting back the boy who was her friend ten years ago instead of actually liking who he is now. When outright asked by Kodaka himself, Yozora affirms she values his past self over his current self. It took the entire span of the novels for her to finally let go and start anew with Sena.
• Manipulative Bitch: She tricked Maria into providing their current Club Room using made-up Scriptures, and regularly makes a fool out of Sena for amusement.
• Never Be Hurt Again: She implies she never tried to make friends after Kodaka moved away because it hurt too much that her Only Friend left her without saying goodbye.
• No Social Skills: As the series goes on, Yozora's awkwardness and hang-ups become more and more obvious.
• Old-Timey Bathing Suit: She wears a full-body striped swimsuit (complete with a horse mask) because she refuses to show skin in public.
• One of the Boys: As a kid, her Only Friend was a boy who actually thought she was a boy too because of the way she dressed and acted.
• Perpetual Frowner: Lampshaded by Kodaka.
• Pet the Dog: Special mention goes to NEXT Episode 11, when she cancels their films because Rika got sick saying it wouldn't be fair if all seven of them couldn't watch it.
• Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Sena's red, and the red (together with Sena) to Kodaka's blue.
• Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Sena. She openly states that seeing making Sena cry is her greatest pastime.
• Sour Outside, Sad Inside: There's a lot of emotional scars hidden beneath her rotten, uncaring facade... and it all began when her father cheated on her mother.
• Sour Prudes: Lampshaded by Rika, who couldn't care less for Yozora's uptight rebukes (unlike poor Sena).
• Stepford Snarker: Talking to an Imaginary Friend and acting like a total Jerkass towards everybody else (especially Sena) may indicate some issues beneath her snarkiness. May or may not have something to do with her broken family.
• Tall Poppy Syndrome: She prefers to sabotage everyone else rather than put forward any effort regarding Kodaka herself if she ever feels someone is doing or looking better than her. This frequently backfires on her. This syndrome also serves as the basis of her disdain for "popular" people, as she'd rather make death wishes to them rather than improve her own image.
• Token Wholesome: Yozora absolutely hates the idea of showing her skin to anyone. She goes as far as to wear a full body swimsuit for the Beach Episode.
• Tomboyish Baseball Cap: She wore a baseball cap when she was a kid and was quite the tomboy.
• Traumatic Haircut: She has one at the end of episode 11 in the first season due to her hair getting singed by Kodaka with a firework and doused with water used to put out fireworks near the end of summer break. As a result, Kodaka is able to recognize his Childhood Friend Sora, who was Yozora with shorter hair.
• Tsundere: A vicious Harsh Type — utterly abusive to everybody (especially towards Sena), but occasionally shows a softer side towards Kodaka.
• Used to Be a Tomboy: When she was a child, she dressed like a boy, got into fights and even her Only Friend thought she was a boy. In the present, she isn't exactly girly, but she dresses more femininely and has long hair, which is why Kodaka doesn't recognize her until she cuts it. Yozora later explains she deliberately passed herself as a boy because she had started hating women after her parents' divorce.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Sena. According to her, only true friends can give each other nicknames, so even if she gave Sena the insulting nickname of "Meat", it's telling something about their relationship.
• What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Apparently finds inter-gender relations a confusing, somewhat disturbing mess, and would prefer being Just Friends. In fact, her dislike of Sena's eroges stems not so much from their sexual content as they are about romance. It just so happens that Sena is very protective of her games and the characters therein. Hence, she finds herself more comfortable watching a BL movie recommended by Rika, keeps insisting that the relationship between its male characters are "pure camaraderie" despite the movie's not-so-subtle homoeroticism. This seems to change as the series goes on; in Volume 7 she even propositions Kodaka for sex, although he doesn't hear her and may not have been meant to.
• Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Dislikes parlors. Being a girl who values privacy, she dislikes how people there keep babbling about things best left private, such as romance, careers, etc., so she takes care of her hair all by herself. Part of her dislike of crowds. She also can't handle holding knives owing to an incident when her abusive mother stabbed her because she took her daughter's attempts to cook as a passive aggressive insult.
• Would Hurt a Child: Viciously slaps ten-year-old Maria twice as a part of extorting ownership of the clubroom from her. In Season 1 Episode 12, it is revealed that her harsh treatment of Maria is not totally unjustified and is, in fact, largely instrumental in the kid's Character Development.
• Wrong Genre Savvy: Yozora is under the impression that she's the female lead in a Childhood Friend Romance series with the Neighbors Club being an excuse for her and Kodaka to get together. She soon realizes she's in a harem series, but still thought of herself as the main love interest. While Kodaka was surprised to know she was "Sora", that doesn't make him reciprocate her feelings. Also, Yozora's love rivals don't think of her and Kodaka being Childhood Friends as something special. Yozora falls deep into depression when she learns Sena was engaged to Kodaka long before she ever knew him and Sena confesses her love for him first. Finally, the light novels end with Kodaka rejecting Yozora's Love Confession, making her realize the true purpose of her character was to let go of her childhood crush.

Sena Kashiwazaki

Daughter of Pegasus Kashiwazaki, headmaster of St. Chronica Academy. Her connections, wealth and beauty — alongside a huge pair of knockers — has boys fawning all over her, and likewise girls casting many an envious eye on her. Despite being constantly surrounded by boys, all she wants are true friends, driving her to become the third member of the Neighbors Club.

• Abhorrent Admirer: She absolutely adores Kobato to the point of drooling at the sight of her, but Kobato is almost terrified of her.
• Academic Athlete: She's said to have outstanding academic and athletic performance.
• Ambiguously Bi: She's enamored with Kodaka and relishes the attention she gets from boys. However, at the same time, she's shown to like dating sims and H-games that are clearly aimed at straight men (though she claims it's because these kinds of games allow her to make friends with female characters, since other girls dislike her in real life), gets a noticeable amount of Foe Romance Subtext with Yozora, and has a rather creepy fixation on Kobato.
• Armor-Piercing Response: When she finally cuts Yozora down to size by telling her that her Childhood Friend Romance with Kodaka means nothing in the end and that he doesn't love her back, it makes Yozora cry.

• Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a sizable chest, which makes her popular with the boys, and even Kodaka finds himself staring at her chest a few times. The flat-chested Yozora is also incredibly envious of her due to this, but she tries to hide it by Slut-Shaming Sena, referring to her breasts as "cow udders" or nicknaming her "Meat".
• Catchphrase Insult: She frequently yells "Stupid Yozora!", and variations thereof, usually before or while storming off in tears because Yozora is being a jerk to her.
• Childhood Friend Romance: She and Kodaka discover that not only their parents had them meet each other when they were toddlers, they were arranged to be married before they were even able to walk. This reveal leaves Yozora in a state of shock because she thought the only advantage she had over other girls was her childhood friendship with Kodaka and it turns out Sena long beat her to it.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: While not as overt as Yozora is, she doesn't like it when Kodaka pays more attention to the other girls, or compliments them in a way that suggests he likes them.
• Cloudcuckoolander: She has some rather strange thought processes.
• Comedic Lolicon: Her obsession with the middle schooler Kobato's cuteness is largely Played for Laughs, but her behavior becomes increasingly creepier as the series goes on, much to poor Kobato's horror. Sena claims she simply wants Kobato to be her little sister, but then she plays an eroge with a Little Sister Heroine that looks suspiciously identical to Kobato...
• Cool Big Sis: Subverted. She tries to get Kobato to see her as an older sister, but she comes on so strong that Kobato just finds her creepy.
• Covert Pervert:
  • When she's caught playing an eroge, she insists that the H-scene is beautiful and artful. Then Yozora gets her to read it aloud...and naturally, it's extremely raunchy.
  • NEXT Episode 2 shows that she's also an eroge fan to such a degree that shocks even Rika.
• Cute Little Fangs: Sports a single fang to emphasize her mischievous nature (especially towards Kobato).
• Cuteness Proximity: She's always reduced to cooing over how cute Kobato is when she's near her. Kobato finds this incredibly creepy.
• Ditzy Genius: Her spoiled nature and lack of common sense for ordinary matters make it easy for Yozora to trick Sena into making a fool of herself repeatedly, but it's stated that she excels academically and she's also shown to be an Instant Expert when it comes to picking up new skills.
• Dude Magnet: One of the reasons most girls in St. Chronica hate her is that she attracts a lot of boys without even trying to.
• Dumb Blonde: Downplayed. While she falls for Yozora's lies and makes herself look like an idiot as a result, she isn't dumb as much as she's gullible, clueless, and lacking in common sense because of her spoiled background. It's also mentioned that she's Book Smart although that's an Informed Ability in her case.
• Everyone Loves Blondes: Sena is blonde, curvy and busty. These traits make her the most attractive and desirable girl in the school in the eyes of the male students.
• Fetishized Abuser: Invoked. She thinks stepping on someone is a kind of reward since her fanboys approve of it and fails to understand Kodaka's dismay at the idea, though she largely ceases making such offers as time goes on.
• Foe Romance Subtext: Her ceiling is covered with pictures of Yozora and she smells a wig she got from Yozora in order to revitalize her vengeance on her. At the end of Next Episode 1, she's shown with wig in hand and her other hand suggestively between her legs. In Volume 4 of the novels, even she can't resist commenting on how post-haircut Yozora looked so hot in a male school uniform.
• Forgotten First Meeting: In Volume 7/NEXT Episode, it turns out that Kodaka and Sena have known each other ever since kindergarten age, joining Yozora as one of Kodaka's childhood friends. Moreover, their fathers have also arranged for the two to marry each other when they grow up.
• Freudian Slip: In Volume 8 and Episode 11 of season 2, she inadvertently proposes to Kodaka while playing a galge, setting in motion the series' Wham Episode.
• Friendship Moment: With Yozora at the very end of the novels, finally coming out into the open that she likes Yozora better than their frequent squabbles would suggest.
• Gamer Chick: Specifically, galge, citing Video Game Caring Potential as her reason.
  • In Season 1 Episode 2, during a Friday meeting, Yozora asks Kodaka and Sena to bring PSPs with the Monster Hunter-esque game to next Monday's meet. Kodaka mentions he's still a Level 1, while Yozora boasts she's at Level 3, but somehow Sena is already at Level 6, the highest class/level in that game. Yozora immediately yanks her PSP, and discovers that Sena's gameplay time was at 53 hours, and that Sena had some bags under her eyes, meaning she spent the entire weekend playing the game extensively with little sleep.
  • She also actively plays Eroge which are typically aimed at men - NEXT Episode 2 has her play a game with a Little Sister Heroine the game's protagonist has sex with. Said heroine looks exactly like Kobato to boot.
• Go-Getter Girl: Sena always tries her best at everything, and is willing to go to great lengths to do something perfectly.
• I Just Want to Have Friends: As in female friends. This is the reason she's hooked to galge, even if the girls there are virtual.
• If It's You, It's Okay: She loves cute girls from dating sims, fawns over Kobato and seems to have a thing for Yozora. Despite being popular among the opposite sex, she's indifferent to men with the sole exception of Kodaka.
• I'm Taking Her Home with Me!: Whenever she's around Kobato, Sena would like to adopt the cute girl as her little sister. At one point, she takes a half-asleep Kobato to take a bath with her. Understandably, Kobato thinks Sena is a major creep for this.
• Informed Ability: Despite doing a lot better than many supposed Aces in anime, at times it's quite easy to forget that Sena is supposed to be an academic genius and a star athlete, what with her constantly making a fool of herself by acting completely clueless, repeatedly falling for Yozora's incredibly obvious tricks and clumsily fumbling around like a cow for the sake of some focus on her chest.
• In-Series Nickname: "Meat", given to her by Yozora on account of her large breasts.
• Instant Expert: Despite her quirks, she's rather smart and can pick up on things fairly quickly. In Season 1 Episode 3, Kodaka was amazed at how she managed to become a proficient swimmer after only an afternoon's worth of lessons, and in Next Episode 1, she defeated him rather easily several times in a fighting game despite being a complete novice compared to Kodaka, who's played the game with Kobato many times.
• It's All About Me: Her ego is as big as her rack.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sena has quite the ego about her connections and can be quite arrogant, but she is still a good person and joined the club because she wanted actual friends.
• Like Father, Like Daughter: Subverted. While her eventual marriage to Kodaka was arranged by the two's fathers, she [[actually truly loves Kodaka for who he is.
• Lonely Rich Kid: Her father is rich enough to get her anything she wants, except friends.
• Lovable Alpha Bitch: She would've been a straight-A Alpha Bitch, except for the fact that she's pretty dorky, socially clueless, not all that bad, and often at "stupid Yozora's" mercy.
• Love Confession: Right after sending Aoi away, Sena openly confesses to Kodaka in front of everyone. He tries to pass it off and ignore it, and she does it again. Lacking any way to maintain the status quo, Kodaka runs away.

• Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Being the headmaster's daughter really helps. When Aoi points out the fact that Maria is not an official teacher/nun in order to delegitimize the club, she manages to turn the tables with just a brief phone call to her dad, who decides to make Maria a special part-time lecturer. When Aoi tries to call her out on this, Sena forces the latter to back down by threatening to use again her connections to have her kicked out.
• Serious Business: Her games. How serious? A character in one of her games wanted to go swimming... which was her sole reason for asking Kodaka to teach her. She didn't want to embarrass herself in front of said character by not being able to swim.
• Signature Headgear: She almost always wears her iconic blue butterfly hair clip.
• Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Yozora, though her hostility is usually just in retaliation to Yozora's.
• So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Sena is good-looking, well-stacked and seemingly popular with the boys. However, her beauty and popularity kept her from forming true friendships because guys act like her toady followers and girls shun her out of jealousy.
• Spanner in the Works: She is this to Yozora, and Yozora hates her for that.
• Stalker Shrine: The ceiling of her bedroom is covered with Yozora pics. Kodaka is worried that Sena is behaving like a stalker creep.

While she looks very similar to her half sister Stella, it's apparently pure coincidence, as their blonde hair and blue eyes are inherited from different mothers rather than their shared father. It's not even that Pegasus Has a Type, as his marriage to Sena's mother is an arranged one.
• Super Drowning Skills: Claims to lack basic swimming knowledge, blaming her primary school's lack of such an education for it. She asks Kodaka, who's a decent swimmer, for help. Later subverted as, to Kodaka's surprise, she's a quick learner.
• Super Gullible: She's easily duped by Yozora many times because she doesn't have the common sense to see through even the most ridiculous lies.
• Tsundere: Harsh Type, which doesn't help her reputation among girls. She's nicer to the club members though so long as she doesn't get carried away. Which happens a lot. In the eighth novel she gives a classic 'I didn't do it for you' line, but it's noted that she really means it. Helping Maria become a special lecturer was just a byproduct.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: She has a bitter rivalry with Yozora that gradually develops into a friendship where they constantly mess with each other. At the end of the novels, they finally come out in the open and admit that they actually like each other.

Yukimura Kusunoki

• Ambiguous Gender Identity: There's a lot of questions regarding Yukimura's gender identity. Yukimura introduces themself as a boy. They didn't even know they were assigned female at birth until after the club members found out. While Yukimura was a bit aware that their anatomy was off, they believed they would grow a penis after "maturing". While shocked at the reveal, Yukimura proclaims being a true man transcends the concept of biological sex and still wishes to become manlier.
• Attractive Bent-Gender: No matter if it's in boy's clothes or girl's clothes, Yukimura always looks adorable.
• Bad "Bad Acting": Apparently has a problem changing the usual deadpan tone when acting in a movie made by the Neighbors Club.

  • Taken to an extreme where it isn't that funny with the reveal Yukimura is assigned female at birth. They blamed their lack of a penis on being a "late bloomer". There were guys who tried to tell Yukimura about it before, but Yukimura brushed it off as bullying.
• Covert Pervert: Overwhelmed with joy that Kodaka is returning to the club, Yukimura declares that they wish they were a big, strong man so they could overpower Kodaka and plunge their 'raging passion into his Yaoi Hole'. Yup, Rika was the one to give The Talk to Yukimura.
• Dude Looks Like a Lady: Yukimura is introduced as a girly-looking boy who gets treated like a girl by everyone, which causes Yukimura to feel ostracized. Then it gets subverted with the reveal that Yukimura is assigned female at birth and didn't know it.
• Expy: Shares a historical namesake and formal pattern of speaking with Hideyoshi Kinoshita from Baka and Test: Summon the Beasts, another character with gender issues.

• Gay Option: Played With. At first, it seems Yukimura is a cute effeminate boy who is part of Kodaka's harem. Then it turns out Yukimura was assigned female and didn't know it themself until much later in the series. Yukimura is still adamant about wishing to be seen as a man and stays in love with Kodaka despite of this.
• Gender-Blender Name: Yukimura is historically a boys' name, which works well in disguise but doesn't make sense outside of it.
• Girly Run: Especially noticeable when stalking Kodaka in the fourth episode.
• Hero-Worshipper: To Kodaka, for all the wrong reasons. They think Kodaka is a paragon of manliness and decides to treat him like a boss.
• I Want to Be a Real Man: Yukimura is obsessed with becoming manly and strong like a samurai. Their efforts fail because of their weird concept of masculinity and the reveal Yukimura wasn't born a boy to begin with.
• I'm Not Here to Make Friends: Only cares about serving at Kodaka's side; joining the Neighbors Club is an excuse to do that.
• Innocent Fanservice Girl: Yukimura is supposed to be a boy and therefore doesn't see any problem with changing and bathing with other guys, not getting how awkward it is for them to do so with someone who looks so much like a girl. Then it turns out Yukimura is assigned female and just didn't know it. No wonder the guys were so shocked when Yukimura stripped in front of them.
• Loving a Shadow: Yukimura idolizes Kodaka as the incarnation of the perfect virile samurai. Not only does Kodaka's true personality have nothing to do with Yukimura's idea of him, he hates his reputation as a violent delinquent. Eventually, Yukimura admits they have long realized their "Aniki" isn't the manly thug they initially thought him to be, but they still adore him.
• Meido: Yozora tricks Yukimura into working for the club as a maid. Yozora later changes the maid uniform for a butler outfit after Yukimura is revealed to be assigned female at birth.
• Named After Somebody Famous: Named after the samurai of the Sengoku Period, Sanada Yukimura, in hopes Yukimura would grow up to be a great Japanese man like him. The parents must have been in serious denial about Yukimura being born a girl.
• Nice Guy: The nicest member of the Neighbors Club. Yukimura always treats Kodaka with utmost respect, and never insults nor hits him.
• No-Sell: When visiting an amusement park, everyone gets on the roller-coaster at the same time. Everyone else is utterly terrified, Rika lapses into an epic rant... and Yukimura just calmly recites a passage from The Heart Sutra.
• No Social Skills: Yukimura grew up almost without any social interaction, which factors into their inability to adapt to society.
• Odd Friendship: Yukimura ends up getting along unexpectedly well with Aoi.
• The Quiet One: Yukimura doesn't speak a lot, and even the little they speak is some kind of snark.
• Raised as the Opposite Gender: Apparently. The only explanation Yukimura gives for believing to be a boy is that it is due to "family circumstances". Sena points out they should be given a better answer than that.
• Recursive Crossdressing: Yozora makes Yukimura dress as a Meido and put on a girl's swimsuit as part of a "training" to become manlier, but she was simply toying with the girly boy. She stops finding it funny when she finds out Yukimura is assigned female at birth.
• Stalker with a Crush: First introduced following Kodaka around and watching him from the shadows. Yukimura only stopped when they were offered to join the Neighbors Club so they could spend time with Kodaka as much as possible.
• The Stoic: Rarely gets fazed by anything, and speaks in a low-key, almost deadpan tone.
• Stupid Sexy Flanders: So cute and girly that all the guys avoid Yukimura in the changing room. Kodaka was also supremely confused when changing and later bathing in the same room as Yukimura. Particularly after he saw Yukimura isn't a boy in the bathroom.
• Subordinate Excuse: Yukimura calls themself Kodaka's underling and is very eager to serve him. When Kodaka asks why they keep doing it even after realizing Kodaka isn't the virile thug Yukimura thought him to be, Yukimura openly admits they are by his side because they want to.
• Sugar-and-Ice Personality: While very calm, serious and inexpressive, Yukimura is very nice and eagerly devoted to Kodaka.
• Super Gullible: Yukimura takes all of Yozora's "advice" at face value, including wearing girl's clothes in order to somehow "prove their manliness".
• Supreme Chef: Although nowhere near as good as Kodaka.
• Undying Loyalty: Claims to have one towards Kodaka. The latter plays along, knowing how emotionally fragile Yukimura is.
• Unsettling Gender-Reveal: Kodaka got to see Yukimura lacks an important male organ when they bath together. Rika further confirms it by giving a lewd Crotch-Grab Sex Check.
• Wholesome Crossdresser: Yukimura wears the boys' school uniform, but in their case, they weren't aware they were assigned female at birth until halfway through the series. They only wear men's clothing from then on, intending to try and become a "true man" even if their body is female.
• Yamato Nadeshiko: Leaving aside their obsession with manliness and samurai, Yukimura is this, ironically. They are excessively polite, demure, serviceable and extremely devoted to the man they love. Rika Shiguma

A freshman and scientific genius whose presence at St. Chronica was designed to increase its prestige. Otherwise she's a loner whose classroom is a laboratory the school made for her. After Kodaka saves her from a mishap involving sleeping gas, she joins the Neighbors Club to get close to him... while revealing an extremely perverted side with an unhealthy passion for mecha-on-mecha H-doujins.

• A-Cup Angst: For all her forwardness, she's actually quite insecure about her body. When Sena upsets her about the difference in their bust sizes, she angrily swears to invent a gene tonic that can expand women's breasts to make her obsolete.
• Anatomically Impossible Sex: Despite her scientific knowledge, when it comes to boys what she 'knows' mostly comes out of Boys' Love games and manga. As such she doesn't realize that boys don't actually have a separate 'Yaoi Hole' for intercourse, unlike what she's read about.

  "You tried to pretend to be a thick-headed bystander! And when that failed, you ran away! What's the point of protecting something you hold dear if you're not going to be there?! If it's so cheap that some crappy selflessness can keep it going, I don't want it, you idiot!"
  • Later gives one to Yozora (over voicemail) for also running away from her problems when she realizes that her Childhood Friend Romance with Kodaka just isn't happening, berating her for just hoping all her issues will just resolve themselves without any effort on her part. Yozora admits that she couldn't argue with any of it.

• Teen Genius: An Omnidisciplinary Scientist who programs games and makes drugs, among others. The only reason she's even in St. Chronica is because Tenma, Sena's father and school headmaster, personally had her enrolled in order to boost St. Chronica's reputation.

• Too Kinky to Torture: There's a good reason Yozora stopped trolling her — any attempt to do so backfires spectacularly on her with an additional erotic context that leaves her exhausted. She decided that simply following along anything Rika says and/or does would be less of a stretch.
• Tranquil Fury: Indeed. When Sena first attempts to spoil Yozora's first play of a Reverse Harem game, Rika is nothing short of frightening. Kodaka's thirteen-year-old little sister and a second-year junior high transferee to St. Chronica, who claims to be a centuries-old vampire named "Reisys V. Felicity Sumeragi". She becomes the sixth member of the Neighbors Club (with Yozora's approval) despite her juniority.

• A-Cup Angst: She gets upset when she realizes her elementary school clothes still fit her — a fact made worse by having a chest even smaller (for a thirteen-year-old, even) than Maria's. And no, Maria is no bustier than an average ten-year-old. Then she gets even more upset after seeing Kate's body.
• Accent Slip-Up: Her Reisys accent goes out the window and her normal Kyushu tongue comes out when she gets flustered.
• Annoying Younger Sibling: Downplayed. Kodaka thinks Kobato's Chuunibyou antics are silly, but he rolls with it and shows a lot of concern for her.

Driving it further home is how "chuunibyou" literally means "second-year middle school syndrome", and Kobato herself is in her second year of middle school.
• Clingy Jealous Girl: She doesn't like it whenever Kodaka's attention gets diverted from her, let alone courtesy of Maria.
• Cosplay Otaku Girl: It's a pretty rare sight for Kobato to appear without her goth-loli cosplay.

Like Kobato, Kuroneko likes cosplaying after the main character of her favorite anime series (in the same Vampire Lolita Archetype fashion), and shares the same cryptic speech pattern when talking to her friends.
• Family Theme Naming: Doubling as Animal Theme Naming. Her brother Kodaka's name is translated as "Small Hawk", while Kobato's name means "Small Dove".

• Innocent Fanservice Girl: Because of her young age, she doesn't mind being naked around her older brother, who likewise doesn't mind. She runs into him nude twice — in Season 1 Episode 3, upon realizing her bathwater has gone cold; and again in Episode 9, while being chased by an equally naked Sena apparently trying to go frisky on her in the bath. Also, she makes Kodaka watch her "transform" (as in undressing and changing into another outfit) in Episode 8.
• Limited Wardrobe: Subverted starting Episode 8 — due to their house's air conditioner breaking down and with a replacement three days away, she, with Kodaka's prodding and inspiration from the same anime from which she took her current style, starts dressing up in normal, less stuffy outfits. Even when she returns to her usual style, her subsequent wardrobes are at least reasonably comfortable for any kind of weather.
• Misplaced Accent: When in-character she speaks with an accent that is so alien from her native Kyushu tongue that she has trouble with a lot of words, though this could be attributed to her age as well.
• Mythical Motifs: She has a vampire motif because her hobby is cosplaying as a vampire loli.
• Older Than She Looks: She looks like three years too young for her thirteen years of age.
• Ominous Pipe Organ: Whenever she decides to ham it up using her vampire persona.

Kobato loves the character so much that she always wears gothic lolita cosplay and pretends to be a very powerful true ancestor vampire who has lived for 10,000 years.
• Vitriolic Best Buds: With Maria, eventually. Their relationship starts with them fighting over Kodaka's attention and brotherly affection. Later on, it's obvious they have become friends, even though they only express their closeness through insults and childish fights.

Maria Takayama

A ten-year-old resident nun at St. Chronica whom Yozora tricked into lending her favorite naptime quarters to the Neighbors Club and, through coercion, becoming its moderator.

• Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair is described as silver in the novels, but looks a light shade of lavender in the anime, despite Kate's hair actually remaining silver.
• Annoying Younger Sibling: She pisses off her older sister Kate by calling her a "poopy old hag" and being her regular bratty self.
• The Baby of the Bunch: She's the youngest member of the Neighbors Club. While she's nominally the supervising teacher, her real role is being the bratty kid of the group and acts as a second younger sister to Kodaka.
• Big Brother Worship: Maria loves Kodaka-onii-chan and his lunchboxes. Ironically, she doesn't worship her actual older sister Kate in the same way, instead being an Annoying Younger Sibling towards her.
• Big Eater: She often talks about or is seen eating lots of food.
• Bratty Half-Pint: Shows this side in Season 1 Episode 12, during a flashback when she refuses Yozora's polite requests to lend her favorite naptime room for the Club's use, peppering her with insults in between. Yozora, normally a Friend to All Children, had to endure more of her insults before she finally snaps and slaps some humility into her.

• Butt-Monkey: Almost no episode ends without her getting on the short end of Yozora's cruel pranks or another squabble with Kobato.

  • In NEXT Episode 3, she reads a couple of otherwise erotic lines innocently, not really understanding what she was saying.
• Cloudcuckoolander: Most members of the Club show shades of this, but she definitely lives and breathes this trope.

• Ditzy Genius: Intelligent and well-educated enough to qualify as a teacher, but as gullible and clueless as many other kids her age. It turns out that she never actually qualified as a teacher, however.

• Nuns Are Mikos: She's a ten-year-old nun whose family's women don the habit as part of a long-standing tradition, which is much more analogous to Miko than real nuns.
• Sensei-chan: Exaggerated, since she's only ten years old (with the immaturity to match) and yet somehow she's a teacher at a high school. Subverted when it turns out she's not a qualified teacher at all. There was nobody to take care of Maria at home, resulting in Kate taking Maria to school with her and Maria just began calling herself a teacher. Then double subverted when, in a ploy to save the Neighbors Club from Aoi, Sena calls her father to have her officially declared as one.
• Signature Headgear: Her nun outfit has a cornette with a heart decoration on the left side.
• Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: She frequently gets into quarrels with Kobato, though to a lesser extent than between Yozora and Sena.
• Stepford Smiler: Shows shades of this occasionally, either during or before flipping to being a Cheerful Child.
• Super Gullible: Manipulating her is way too easy.

Maria's fifteen-year-old sister. While she's slightly younger than Kodaka, she maintains the manner of a Hard-Drinking Party Girl crossed with a Dirty Old Man. Contrary to her slightly gruff attitude towards her little sister, she seems to be a rather doting sister.

• The Ace: She's the Student Council President, and she's basically Sena without the arrogance and inability to make friends. Subverted when it turns out she has very poor grades and has to be held back a year.
• Alliterative Name: Hinata Hidaka.
• Book Dumb: Despite being a model student otherwise, Hinata has such poor grades that she worries if she'll be able to graduate at all. She does end up repeating her senior year because she doesn't pass the finals exam.
• Foil: To Sena and Yozora. She's beautiful, intelligent and at the same time is very popular. She's also very nice to everyone, even if she doesn't care about their shallow opinions.
• Held Back in School: She fails her finals exam and must repeat her final high school year.
• Identical Stranger: She's what Yozora could look like if she was older and kinder. Thus the revelation that they are actually half-sisters makes even more sense.

• Alternate Character Reading: His first name is written as 天馬 and usually read as Tenma, "ten" as in sky and "ma" as in horse. Except in this case, his name is actually Pegasus and the kanji is just its literal translation into Japanese.
• Ambiguously Bi: He has a wife and slept with a woman with whom he fathered Stella. However, the way he talks about Hayato seems more akin to someone with a huge crush rather than a Best Friend.
• Berserk Button: Calling him by his first name "Pegasus" makes him angry enough to yell.
• Can't Hold His Liquor: Two glasses of red wine already drives him tipsy.
• Do Not Call Me "Paul": He hates being called by the Gratuitous English reading of his first name because "Pegasus" doesn't sound like a proper name.
• Embarrassing First Name: The characters for his name are read as Pegasus, much to his embarrassment.

• Adopt-a-Servant: Stella is Pegasus's illegitimate daughter from an affair he had in high school. Not wanting to cause an uproar for his current family, she asked to be made work as a servant at his mansion so she could be close to her biological father and half-sister. Pegasus hired her as a steward in his mansion, but does care for her as a father away from others' eyes.
• Bifauxnen: The only way to tell her she's a female is her bust and feminine voice.
• The Comically Serious: Even when Kodaka caught Kobato and Sena naked, all she can muster is to flatly call him out on being an Accidental Pervert.
• Grade Skipper: She graduated university at the mere age of 14.
• Servile Snarker: Be it towards her master, his daughter, or her friends, Stella will respond with completely straight-faced snark.
• Sleeps in the Nude: She claims to sleep naked. It's unknown whether she's telling the truth or just told a lie to make Kodaka back down when he tries to protest to Kobato sleeping with her to keep her out of Sena's clutches.
• Strong Family Resemblance: Played with. While she looks very similar to her half sister Sena, it's apparently pure coincidence, as their blonde hair and blue eyes are inherited from different mothers rather than their shared father. It's not even that Pegasus Has a Type, as his marriage to Sena's mother is an arranged one.
