Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

There MAY be enough there given when it was written.

I may not remind removing Alec, all things considered. Book came out in 1891. Tale of Two Cities came out in the 1850s, Les Miserables in 1862. Gogol's a Terrible Vengeance was 1831. Three Musketeers was 1844. Much worse came out in the same time period.

the only problem is I'd have to reread one of the most depressing books ever to confirm.

Hmm, looking at those writeups (especially Les Miserables), you may have a point there.

I uh kinda thinking cutting might be the right call?

I checked 19th Century Literature and man most of these that have examples are all way worse than this.

Based on what I've read about Alec he's a sad cut, an absolutely awful piece of work who doesn't quite hit the mark

Happy New Year everyone!

  • Potema Septim, the Wolf Queen of Solitude, has the dubious honor of being one of the few "unambiguously evil" figures in the history of Tamriel. Potema was responsible for the War of the Red Diamond, alleging her niece—and rightful Empress—to be a bastard, then having her executed to install her son Uriel Septim III as Emperor in her place, plunging the country into a war so brutal it nearly tore the Empire to pieces. Dabbling in necromancy and daedra-summoning toward the end of her life to the point the city of Solitude has become a "land of death" from how bloated it is with resurrected corpses of her enemies and her own servants alike, Potema's evil was powerful enough to live on into the Fourth Age as a hateful spectre. Unspeakably petty as well, Potema once condemned a servant to the eternal torment of the Soul Cairn for an unintentional insult. Suspected to have even been responsible for the fall of her grand-nephew Pelagius the Mad into irrecoverable insanity, Potema is one of the few characters in Tamriel's inconsistent lore to be exactly as evil as she's claimed to be.
  • War of Remnant: A RWBY Anthology:
    • Dr. Arthur Watts is a narcissist willing to kill anyone in the way of his enormous ego. When James Ironwood showed preference to a soldier named Nicholas Shade, Watts responded by brainwashing Shade into a Serial Killer called the Nightwalker, causing many innocent deaths. When Winter confronts Shade, Watts orders him to capture her so he can mutilate her body for James to find, but when she fixes the brainwashing first, Watts kills him to protect his identity. Later on, Watts masterminds an attack on the unveiling of the new Knights, intending to kill all the dozens of innocents inside; when the attack is a failure and the terrorists have to retreat, Watts kills them all to cover up his involvement. Later on, Watts provides Cinder Fall the virus necessary to cause the Fall of Beacon, willing to kill everyone in Vale for the sake of his misplaced vengeance; he later personally ensures Vale's fall by manipulating the Vytal Tournament, tricking Pyrrha Nikos into murdering Penny Polendina while Penny's father Pietro and girlfriend Ruby Rose are Forced to Watch.
    • Commander Simon Blade is an Atlesian nationalist who views the citizens of Mantle as expendable. Believing himself to be Judge, Jury, and Executioner, Blade executes every person he sees committing a crime out of the belief that they're scum compared to him. Twice executing drug busts that kill everyone inside, including one person who tries to flee, Blade previously murdered Henry Marigold for stealing pharmaceuticals, sparing May so that she may spread the story from "the city that actually matters". Later on, Blade allies with Arthur Watts to sell out the unveiling of the Knights, fully willing to let everyone inside die for the sake of greed; when the attack goes wrong, Blade kills three of the terrorists personally to cover up his involvement, smiling all the while.
    • Jacques Schnee is the CEO of the Schnee Dust Company and the leader of his own criminal empire. After manipulating his grieving wife to steal the company from her, Jacques stole her shares to ensure she would never leave him, then began regularly emotionally and physically abusing his children. Jacques immediately institutes dangerous budget cuts, leading to dangerous events like cave-ins becoming regular occurrences and leading to dozens of deaths among his workforce; his workers also commit heinous crimes like branding their workers, with Neon Katt's mother committing suicide from the trauma. Among other heinous acts, Jacques forces his daughter Weiss to witness terrorists execute his board of directors so that she'll become a racist like him; bombs the rally of a political opponent, killing dozens of innocents; buys trafficked slaves from the Crown to work in his mines; assassinates any business rivals, including Flynt Coal's father; and masterminds a terrorist attack on a mall with the White Fang, double-crossing them afterwards for the sake of stoking anti-Faunus tensions, all the while planning on running for the Council to take even more power for himself.
    • Damian Void is the man responsible for the White Fang's many atrocities. Funding the Fang as a way to exterminate humanity, Damian targets the Faunus just as much as he targets humans, making no secret that he's only interested in killing as many people as possible. After ordering Roman to attack Team RWBY with the Paladin, Damian later takes Ruby hostage when he finds her in Mountain Glenn; when she refuses to talk, Damian electrocutes her until her Aura breaks, then holds a knife at her throat to make her team back off. When allied with Cinder Fall, Damian funds the Breach, intending to massacre everyone in Vale simply to kill a few of his business rivals and to satiate his endless sadism. When this fails, Damian executes his own henchman for annoying him, then goes on a killing spree across Vale, taking back what he believes is owed for the Breach's failure. Damian later joins Adam Taurus's assault on Vale by having his forces go through the streets and apartments slaughtering everyone in sight, with his men executing entire apartment buildings worth of people.
    • Adam Taurus, the "Spiteful Bull", remains as sadistically petty as ever. As a terrorist that primarily targets civilian populations, Adam already has over 50 kills to his name after two attacks, racking up dozens more when he bombs a restaurant. When Winter Schnee publicly calls him a coward, Adam demands she take it back; when she doesn't, Adam seeks her home and murders her wife and infant daughter out of pure spite. When Winter arrives a moment too late, Adam briefly spares her so she'll die in pain, then sets her apartment on fire to escape in the chaos; fresh off this incident, Adam attempts to murder Ciel Soleil's team and kills her partner Dawn. Adam later orders his forces to kill everyone in sight during the fall of Vale, including other Faunus, before making his way to Beacon and personally killing students there; when he discovers Blake Belladonna in the chaos, he first rapes her with his gun — having also raped her when she was fifteen — then slices off Yang Xiao Long's arm just to further spite her for leaving him.
  • Dead Irons, written by James Kuhoric: Devin Irons is a vicious husband and father who regularly beat his wife and 4 children, Irons went so far as to brand his son Silas with a cross and tie him to a statue, bloody and bruised, for an undetermined amount of time. When the only man in town aware of Irons's cruelty confronts him, Irons gleefully stabs the man to death, before enacting a plan to gain eternal life. Making a pact with Hell, Irons crucifies his wife and plans to sacrifice her and his children to eternal pain and torment in exchange for eternal life, but when Silas disrupts the ritual, Irons settles for gutting his wife and leaving his children to wander the land as monstrous zombies. Continuing his plans years later, Irons tortures and murders men, women, and children, then brainwashes 99 of them into slitting their own throats. When his kids finally return for their vengeance, Irons revives their mother as a demonic cannibal and orders her to kill her own children, then reveals his plans to unleash his dark powers across the land and cleanse the world of those he deems "unrighteous."
  • Justice League Dark: Destiny is a malevolent sorcerer with a god complex. Creating a magical artifact called the Dreamstone, which would force its victims to live their worst nightmares, often driving them into a murderous rage, Destiny terrorized the land until he was defeated by Merlin and the demon Etrigan, though not before mortally wounding knight Jason Blood, necessitating his merging with Etrigan to save his life. Centuries later, Destiny's spirit would manipulate the dying Ritchie Simpson into spreading the Dreamstone's magic across the world, causing casualties on a global scale, while feeding off the negative energy of the stone's victims. Finally returning to the physical world upon the Dreamstone being united, Destiny possesses Ritchie's body and sets off to continue his global conquest, wreaking havoc in a nearby city and mortally wounding Jason Blood upon his defeat.
  • Mile 22: Axel is the Indocarrian agent in charge of catching Li Noor. When Overwatch is escaping with Noor, Axel blows up one of their trucks, killing several agents. When Overwatch hides in a cafe, Axel blows it up, killing all of the civilians inside, including a little girl. Axel later executes agent Douglas when he makes a stand against Axel's agents. In the following fight, Axel's men nearly kill agent Alice and a little girl. Despite his friendly persona, Axel is continuously shown to not care who he has to hurt to get the job done.
  • Vecna, born Henry Creel, is the human mind behind the eldritch Upside Down. A normal child in a loving household who nevertheless grew up as a hateful sociopath, Henry mind-raped his own family before murdering his mother and older sister, leaving his father Victor alive to take the fall for his atrocities, where Victor would go mad and scratch out his own eyes. Remanded to the care of Dr. Martin Brenner and becoming his first patient—thus known as 001 or simply "One"—Henry manipulated fellow psychic Eleven and convinced her to sever the chip inhibiting his abilities, allowing Henry to massacre not only every orderly and guard in Brenner's lab, but every psychic child as well. Banished to the Upside Down, Vecna constructed the Mind Flayer, meaning every atrocity—from the murder of numerous well-loved supporting characters, to the massacres at Hawkins Laboratory, and of 30 random innocent people in 1985—can be laid at his feet. Vecna ultimately seeks to let the Upside Down spill into Earth and consume all humanity as the culmination of his misanthropy, and throughout Season 4, he torments, mind-rapes, and murders numerous innocent teenagers with their worst fears, ultimately torturing Max Mayfield into catatonia and possible brain death.
  • Republic issues #23-26—"Infinity's End" arc: Mother Zalem is an evil leader of the Dathomirian Nightsisters who plans to use the Infinity Gate to destroy Coruscant. Having enslaved and mated with a Jedi Knight in her youth before killing him, Zalem has her daughter Ros Lai abandoned to cruelty of her clan after she seemingly ends up deformed and powerless. Zalem has her slaves dig up Kwa pyramids in deadly conditions and has Kwi, devolved descendants of the Kwa, captured and tortured. Zalem has Jedi Master Quinlan Vos captured and injected with a deadly poison before venturing into the Kwa pyramid, and later activates the Infinity Gate, sending a destructive wave to Coruscant, with her only regret being that she wouldn't be able to hear the screams of Jedi and countless innocents who will die.
  • Unicron is a powerful planet-eating Transformer and the Arch-Enemy of Primus, the creator of the Cybertronians. After destroying the old realms that existed before the current multiverse, Primus stopped Unicron's quest to consume all of existence again by trapping him within a lifeless asteroid and left to wander aimlessly through space. When Primus was shot during a fight between the Autobots and Decepticons, Unicron heard his rival's scream of pain and made a direct path towards Cybertron. Stopping to devour the planet of Ghennix and its roughly 60 billion inhabitants, Unicron reformatted three of its survivors to be his new heralds. After sending them to retrieve Galvatron from the future, Unicron tortured him in order to gain his compliance. Unicron distracted Primus's forces by unleashing his sleeper agents that were planted within Cybertron's population millennia ago. Once he finally arrived, Unicron devastated Cybertron and claimed countless lives, including Primus's. Unicron's rampage left lasting scars on Cybertron's surface and truly earned him the title of the Chaos Bringer.
  • Fairy Fencer F:
    • Bernard, in the original version, is a cold and deceptive man with dark plans to summon the Vile God. One of Dorfa's Heavenly Czars, Bernard leads the group's many hostile takeovers, terrorizing to gather all the Furies and gain absolute power. However, Bernard has his own scheme, using the group to collect the Furies for himself to then summon the Vile God for its power since, as a descendant of the God, he can inherit it. To this end, Bernard deceives Dorfa and drives Sherman to madness as a pawn to usurp Dorfa in another timeline. With Sherman's help, Bernard manage to resurrect the Vile God before trying to sacrifice him to attain full power, only for it to backfire horribly when Sherman double-crosses him first.
    • Zenke of the Heavenly Czars is the psycho of the group, a bloodthirsty murderer who invaded Solaru Village and formed a death system for the people. Every day, Zenke would pair villagers in an Involuntary Battle to the Death, pitting loved ones where if they refused, Zenke would execute both. Zenke has done this so often that he has mountains of corpses, including women and children. Kidnapping Tiara, Zenke forces Fang to fight in a gauntlet for his entertainment, without any real intent in keeping his end, trying to execute Fang at the end. In the second timeline, Zenke was no different; losing against Fang again, Zenke kills off his own fairy partner, and tries to kill Fang after pretending to seek redemption. Even in the Evil Goddess route, Zenke starts off sympathetic before reverting to his former self, turning even more psychotic. No matter what timeline Fang and Eryn enter, Zenke still remains the irredeemable killer that he truly is.
  • Theodor "Ted" Faro, the world's first trillionaire, deliberately inflamed tensions between his clients to sell his war machines. A short-sighted, petty fool whose robotic "Faro Plague" caused the annihilation of mankind, Ted began to fret how the world would view him in its new incarnation. To this end, he erases APOLLO, the repository of knowledge, and murders the other leading members of Zero Dawn before they can intervene. Filling his bunkers' survivors with kill switches, Ted murdered them for petty reasons, bemoaning only what they made him do until he was left alone, waiting for the day he hoped he would emerge as a god for the reborn mankind. A selfish megalomaniac, Ted condemned humanity to suffer for centuries all so he wouldn’t go down as the man who destroyed the world.

It's part of a general genre/time period heinous standard, like different periods could get away with different stuff, like we're generally easier on works from the more censored eras.

Since that is the case I have another one who may warants a second look.

From A Diary Ofa Madman :

  • The judge was considered an irreproachable defender of justice until after his death, when a notary discovered his secret journal revealing his true nature as an unconvicted Serial Killer. After disserting about how killing is the law of nature and life is meaningless, the judge decided to act upon his urges. He cut the throat his servant's goldfinch, strangled a boy, mocked the distress of the parents and murdered a fisherman with a spade. When the fisherman's nephew was convicted of the murder, the judge himself sentenced him to death. Watching the innocent man guillotined with great pleasure, he wished he could have bathed in his blood.

He has only 3 kills, granted one is a kid and another is sentecing to death a man whose uncle he killed. Still when compared to ones Lyghtysnake brought up it still pretty small.

I mean, directly killing 3 people and sentencing a 4th to death over a crime he committed sounds like he does hit baseline, also since it describes him as a Serial Killer, did he kill some more people?

I uh think that's more than enough for a detective story from the 1880's. Like that's at least to the level of Jack Baskerville?

AH... One of my earliest candidate. I wouldn't lose sleep about cutting him. I could argue he's the only villain in a short story but, admittedly, he isn't the most impressive.

[up][up] Unclear. In the story, the narrator says that the Judge's journal has other pages, but without relating any new crime.

[up] It's not really a detective story. It's a in-story diary about the Judge's thought process about the nature of killing before acting upon his urges and the lose Framing Device is two short paragraphs.
