Nightmare Fuel cleanup and maintenance

Go To

Now with a sandbox!

It appears that many Nightmare Fuel pages have problems, including:

1. Listing non-scary things that made the viewer feel slightly uncomfortable at worst.

2. Having spoiler tags on them (which is against the page's guidelines).

3. Listing Fridge Horror and fan theories.

And much more!

On a few occasions, people from outside the site's community have pointed out our overly lax usage of Nightmare Fuel to make fun of us, meaning that it can legitimately harm our reputation to let this go unchecked.

The TRS thread meant for redefining Nightmare Fuel started to become a place for cleaning up Nightmare Fuel pages in general, so we may as well move these discussions to Long Term Projects where they belong.

Here are the guidelines to determine whether something is Nightmare Fuel or not.

    Nightmare Fuel rules
  • This is a page whose name is intended to be taken more literally than most. It's not enough for material to be scary; to truly qualify, it has to be frightening enough to legitimately unnerve/disturb the viewer, with actually being nightmare-inducing as the ultimate endpoint.
    • Good signs that something IS Nightmare Fuel include if:
      • It left you feeling shaken even after the credits had rolled, you turned the last page, or are otherwise done with the work.
      • You have a hard time falling asleep if you think about it at night, or have a literal nightmare about it.
      • You dread that episode, scene, level, chapter, or song during re-watches, and consider skipping it.
    • With that said, don't add something just because it happens to be your personal phobia. For example, spiders can be scary and many people have arachnophobia, but just because a spider happens to be in the work, it does not make a Nightmare Fuel entry. It needs to reasonably be scary to someone without the phobia.
    • Don't confuse tension with fear. If the hero is in trouble, but you know he'll make it out okay at the end, it's probably not Nightmare Fuel unless the threat is especially disturbing.
  • Explain WHY the entry scared you. Try to convey your sense of fear to your readers. Avoid putting up Zero-Context Examples.
    • Remember that Weblinks Are Not Examples, and neither are quotes on their own. You should explain the horror in your own words, rather than rely on others to do so.
  • Don't add things that might have scared someone. If it didn't scare you, and you don't personally know anyone else who was scared, you shouldn't be adding it to Nightmare Fuel.
  • Nightmare Fuel should stick to you even after you're done with the work.
    • If something is initially presented as scary but turns out to be harmless, it's most likely not Nightmare Fuel since The Reveal makes the scariness vanish.
    • Jump Scares are a good source of Nightmare Fuel, but not all of them automatically qualify: being startled is not the same as being scared.
  • Hypotheticals are not Nightmare Fuel:
    • Remember that Trailers Always Lie: a scene that is presented as scary in the trailer could very well turn out to be inoffensive in the finished work. Only add examples from unreleased works if they were especially terrifying in the previews.
    • Fan theories do not belong on the Nightmare Fuel page under any circumstance. No matter how much evidence they have to support them, don't add them until they've been officially confirmed. In the meanwhile, take them to Wild Mass Guessing.
    • Fridge Horror goes on the Fridge page, not Nightmare Fuel. Don't add it unless it's Ascended Fridge Horror.
  • Keep in mind the work's intended audience when considering whether or not something is Nightmare Fuel.
    • If something is normal or expected in the genre, it does not automatically qualify. Violence in a Fighting Series or gore in a horror movie must be especially disturbing or gruesome by the work's standards to be Nightmare Fuel.
    • Remember that Kids Shouldn't Watch Horror Films. If a work is rated PG-13 or higher but would only be scary to young children, it's not Nightmare Fuel.
    • The standards on what qualifies as Nightmare Fuel are especially stringent on works aimed at children and pre-teens: kids have hyperactive imaginations, so even something benign can give them nightmares.
  • Spoiler tags do not belong on Nightmare Fuel pages. Much of what scares us comes from inherently spoilery stuff such as death and the unknown, so finding spoilers on these pages should be expected.
  • Nightmare Fuel is an Audience Reaction, so it needs to be scary for the audience. Describing how the characters react to something scary isn't needed. Just because something scares them, that doesn't mean it scares us as well.
  • Nightmare Fuel is a No Real Life Examples, Please! page. Meta-examples involving the actors, production, or behind-the-scenes incidents are not allowed.

Guidelines when proposing cleanup of a page:

  • Some rules are pretty objective. If you see a Zero-Context Example, Fridge Horror, Real Life example, speculation, In-Universe reaction that isn't scary to the viewers, examples that explicitly describe themselves as not being very scary (including "mildly creepy", "somewhat unnerving", and other synonymous phrases), or examples that are just scene summaries without going into detail about why it's so scary, you can (and should) remove them immediately without coming here to ask.
  • You should also strip all spoiler tags from the page. Itty Bitty Wiki Tools has a tool for that, but it can cause problems, so if you use it be sure to preview the page and thoroughly look it over.
  • Once you've fixed the objective issues with the page, bring it here so we can look at the more subjective problems, such as examples that may not be scary enough to qualify. If a consensus is reached that a certain entry does not qualify, it can be removed.

Adding on to what was said about the NightmareFuel.Five Nights At Freddys subpages, I feel as if the pages are too long currently. While they aren’t Overly Long Pages, I feel as if there’s excess amounts of detail on them that make them unnecessarily long.

Thanks for checking over that Spongebob page. I was curious if the Dingo Pictures page is even worth keeping. Most of the examples are zero content entries and the slightly detailed entries don't explain/convey why it's scary. Besides the movies are of such poor quality (in every aspect) that it provides much Nightmare Retardant.

[up][up] Eh, I feel like that placement was more "wow look at how dark this 'new' episode is" than "I was legitimately scared by it."

(cue level start jingle) NightmareFuel.Yoshis Island:

    Yoshi's Island
  • The Castle/Fortress Theme which creates an effective atmosphere for the level's boss fight. Some castle/fortress levels have a passageway between the red doors and the boss fight, with this eerie music setting the tone. Not that scary.
  • If Yoshi is hit, Baby Mario is suddenly caught in a flying bubble, wailing desperately, as the player tries to get him back before the Toadies catch him and fly away with him. To make matters worse, some enemies will attempt to take Baby Mario when he's in the air or just plainly swipe him off Yoshi's saddle. The accompanying sound effect doesn't make things any better. This isn't scary.
  • Neglecting to retrieve Baby Mario in time rewards you with an image that consists of the Toadies carrying Baby Mario away against a black background, with one of them snickering at you before they take off. The noise they make doesn't help. This did scare me the first time. Keep.
  • The motif that plays whenever Yoshi gets an instant death (e.g., falling into a bottomless pit, touching a thorn or lava, landing on spikes). When this happens, the screen transitions to black through a swift horizontal zig-zag wipe effect. It is really unsettling, and the high-pitched version featured in the enhanced GBA port is no better. This isn't scary, it's just a noise.
  • The "Game Over" screen shows "GAME OVER" in a deranged font zooming in and rotating in random directions. The same animation repeats itself several times afterward until you either continue the game or shut it off. The depressing piano ditty that plays under it and the fact that SNES games with pre-rendered 3D graphics were in their relative infancy only make this worse. Yeah, keep this.
  • The threat of being eaten occurs quite a bit. A boss battle occurs in a frog's stomach and Piranha Plants will try to swallow Yoshi whole, as will the giant catfish lurking in the waters of several jungle levels. There are also a few chase scenes in which a gigantic Chain Chomp is out to eat Yoshi (and the very ground you stand on). Not scary.
  • Kamek would enlarge small creatures in the boss battles. The transformations were complete with music that suggested "time to die". Not scary, and the music sounds more mundane than anything.
  • The falling walls in Burt's fort which will crush Yoshi if he's underneath one. Not scary.
  • The tiny Chain Chomp in the background of a room in Sluggy's fort that becomes huge and bites at the screen. It just "becomes huge" because it goes towards the camera. Not that scary.
  • Sluggy the Unshaven's only 'attack' is moving slowly forward, but if he gets far enough he'll push you off the platform to your death. His weak spot is his beating heart, which shrivels and pops during his defeat, making him melt offscreen. Not scary.
  • Bigger Boo gets larger as you throw eggs at him until he explodes. It's a Boo and this is a cartoonish fight, how is this scary?
  • Naval Piranha is terrifying if you imagine a giant monster plant that charges at you, and the boss itself is referencing Little Shop of Horrors. I can see its intro and the battle music being a bit creepy, but nah.
  • When you defeat Tap-Tap the Red Nose, he falls into a pool of lava and you watch him helplessly try to swim out before sinking. Of course, that's nothing compared to Tap-Tap the Golden in Bowser's Castle. Not scary.
  • The titular Fuzzies in World 1-7, "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy". Touch or eat one, and watch as the world begins to wobble and warp in front of your eyes while Yoshi staggers around and the music distorts. It's worse when they reappear in Worlds 4-1 and 6-3, where they appear over large chasms, so if you touch one, you may very well stagger off the edge and towards your doom. This is funny, not scary!
  • While nearly every boss suffers a quick death, Prince Froggy is defeated from his stomach. The background of his stomach slowly turns red as he gets more and more close to being defeated, and when you do defeat him, after you, ahem, leave his body through the back, Prince Froggy is spasming on the ground, clearly in pain. This is funny, not scary.
  • The sound of the Lunge Fish is one of the most terrifying sounds in video games. The Lunge Fish hides in the water and suddenly lunges out, and if it eats Yoshi you instantly die. ZCE for the sound, and I never found this scary.
  • Incoming Chomps, which are giant Chain Chomps that fall from the sky. Not only the fear of getting hit and falling into the holes they leave, but those faces. And these things are found in the second level of the game! Even more unsettling is the fact that they start off in the background, just bouncing around minding their business. Then you cross their field of view and suddenly turn to face you and leap towards the foreground. One can only imagine little kids playing this stage and getting scared. Not a jump scare. This is a bit startling but not scary.
  • Gargantuan Blargg and Nep-Enut can be pretty scary for kids, too, with this giant red/blue... thing popping out of the lava/water out of nowhere, especially if you don't realize there are eyes there. They can be scary, but they aren't.
  • The chalk drawings suddenly coming to life during the train sections of the game. Especially if you're playing it for the first time as they look like harmless background scribbles. Seriously? This isn't scary at all.
  • The Dizzy Dandy. If you're not paying attention to them (the real ones smile, the fakes have an evil smirk on them) you'll run right into them as they suddenly drop down and roll after you. I wasn't scared, just surprised.
  • The Slimes, which just fall into Uncanny Valley. They disguise themselves as block-looking platforms until you touch them, which makes them transform. The worst part is that not all of the block-like platforms are Slimes, making it hard to predict which one is a Slime or not. How are these scary?
  • World 6. The first five worlds in the game all have some sort of charming quality to them for the most part: Smiling flowers, adorable-looking fauna and lush-looking backgrounds. Then you find yourself in the hellish wasteland that is World 6. The ground is brown and dead, all the forest's trees have been petrified, bones and Skeleton Goonies litter the landscape and lava flows freely in nearly every level. Yeah, I find this a bit disturbing. Keep.
  • The final level is full of it:
    • In the beginning, Yoshi must turn himself into a helicopter and fly across a bottomless pit. Every so often, Kamek will swoop behind Yoshi and ambush him from behind. He also does this in the Extra Level from World 5. Not scary.
    • There is an optional chase where Tap-Tap the Golden, an invincible golden version of Tap-Tap the Red Nose, is chasing Yoshi across a rocky, lava-filled area, as the screen ever so slowly autoscrolls to allow him more area to move. It doesn't help that before entering this chase, if the player wants to receive helpful information, all they get is "RUN AWAY, HURRY!!!" in dramatically huge font, as shown in the image above. What arguably makes this even worse is that you're being chased by a boss that's Nigh-Invulnerable, and is large enough that you can hear the ground quaking from every step that it takes. Your eggs manage to stun it, but that's about it. Not even it falling down a hole to its doom can stop it; it just springs forth like a proverbial bat out of Hell, and continues to chase you, its smile almost taunting you. Also, in the SNES version, the boss theme plays during this chase. But in the GBA version, the music that plays is when you're about to encounter a boss, which just makes it worse. Eh, I think this might count.
    • Before the final battle is another chase scene, only this one is an Auto-Scrolling Level which takes place in a creepy playroom-themed dark hallway. Kamek constantly appears from out of nowhere in various places and will zap you with his magic wand. If he misses, he will turn blocks into small enemies or stars. You can throw eggs at Kamek but he will just reappear somewhere else. All this happens while impending doom music plays. Not too scary.
    • In the final battle, where Baby Bowser, in an eerily designed toy room, attempts to ride (and therefore injure) Yoshi. After he has been defeated, Kamek turns him into Big Bowser. Big, meaning the castle he had occupied is completely destroyed by his transformation, and he could probably crush Yoshi with a single finger/claw. The transformation and battle is accompanied by hardcore heavy metal music, a jarring contrast to the other music in the game, and the battle is pretty much Yoshi trying to hit him with large eggs to push him back, while he is slowly coming towards you. When he is hit, he is indeed pushed back, only to then run at full speed towards Yoshi, who is standing on a small ledge (which is being destroyed by the boulders that fly in the air from Bowser's roars). If Bowser comes close enough, his stomach obliterates the ledge, leaving Yoshi unable to do anything but plummet to his death. This can be extremely scary when one is desperately trying to get him further back, knowing that he will run at full speed afterwards. What makes this even worse is that when he has one hit left, he'll continue to run towards you, and will not stop until he collides with Baby Mario and Yoshi. And when he does... His design note  certainly doesn't help matters (and that's not even getting into his BETA design). At least his first form was downright Ugly Cute (and arguably even a Designated Villain at worst). Yeah, keep this.'
  • "The Impossible? Maze" is one of the extra levels in Yoshi's Island, and is quite possibly one of the eeriest levels in the game. As the name suggests, it's a dark labyrinth that is seemingly endless until you know exactly what to do. It's also one of the very few levels to feature Grim Leechers, which are enemies that latch onto you and reverse your controls. And if that's not bad enough, the soundtrack that plays in this level in the "Room Before Boss" theme. Yeah, this level used to bother me. Keep.
  • Aside from in-game fuel, there's a commercial for the SNES game where some guy in a restaurant tries to eat as much as Yoshi... and just like Mr. Creosote, the guy explodes, splattering everyone with his stomach contents (thankfully, this version of the ad only aired a few times, before being swiftly pulled and replaced with a censored version in which the splattering and exploding happens off-screen as a woman in the restaurant turns and looks to the left, and then the stomach contents spelling out "PLAY IT LOUD" are now a rich, thin, bright, non-disgusting green slime that resembles Nickelodeon slime). This is really more disgusting than scary, and does it count if it's not in the game?

The things in my dreams wish they could chase me!

NightmareFuel.Sesame Street needs to be looked at. Sure, the show is aimed towards young audiences, and the show has thousands of episodes, so there's no doubt some creepy stuff in there, but looking at some of the examples, some of the stuff just isn't scary at all- both to myself and the Youtube comment sections.

[up]It's already been mentioned before, but I don't remember what was done with it. I do recall posts saying that the earlier episodes were more likely to contain examples than later ones.

Edit: I don't feel like providing commentary for all of NightmareFuel.Yoshis Island at the moment, but instant death is annoying and not scary (since losing a life in any other circumstances involves a timer), and I don't know how anyone could find Fuzzies scary instead of one of the funniest parts of the game. It's actually mentioned on Funny.Yoshis Island, though it unfortunately lacks context.

I'm not sure if this was okay but I cleaned up the Class of 3000 page a little. I mostly deleted a bunch of the in-universe examples, blank episode bullets, and stuff. I kept most the possible examples. Someone who's seen the show this decade might want to look through the leftover examples and see if the page is worth keeping (only 4 episodes have any possible examples left).

Also I brought up the Dingo Pictures page and was wondering on a second opinion. I think the page is a little messy, the works themselves have tons of Nightmare Retardant due to abysmal quality, and is full of ZCE. However a few examples could possibly be worth sending to another page.

Because apparently I can't help but keep editing the Strike Witches page and subpages, to whip them into shape (and am starting to become tempted to watch it for some reason, probably lack of other viewing material), have a check of the nightmare fuel page:

    Strike Witches NF
  • In the prologue, the Neuroi appear into our world via the vortexes in the skies and wreak havoc on various cities. ZCE
  • As often the case in Truth in Television, soldiers get wounded and killed in battle. As summed up in one of the military officer's lines:
"This is a slaughter, kid." ZCE
  • Gertrud witnessing the destruction of Karlsland and Chris getting injured in the resulting attack. ZCE
  • When Gertrud gets shot down by the Neuroi, she bleeds heavily from her stomach and came this close to dying when Yoshika heals her. Borderline ZCE, needs more context regardless
  • The fact there is a Neruoi unit of unknown type that is trying to stalk Sanya, one that often hides in the clouds and on it's first contact with the Orussian Night witch didn't fight back AND escaped being destroyed. The second time it is encountered by Sanya, Eila and Yoshika it's presence is preceded by a "song" it was singing in a way like Sanya Sings....but it's voice and song echos across radio waves and the skies itself in an echoed and eerie, metallic sounding cross akin to an eldritch whale singing through a poorly cared for radio and miss-tuned speakers. It's song also apparently disrupts radio communications and radar systems to some degree. Seems fine-ish
  • The death of Minna's childhood friend and (implied) lover can catch people off-guard. ZCE, and probably fits better under tearjerker, regardless
  • Minna trying to stop Mio when she loses her powers is unnerving. ZCE and unnerving does not equal nightmare fuel

(movie folder)

  • The opening sequence depicts a unit of Allied infantry, tanks, and naval ships attacking a group of Neuroi ground units. Unfortunately for them, a massive capital class Neuroi air unit arrives and blasts the infantry and tanks into oblivion. Then, it attacks the naval fleet with a single blast through the ships and later destroys a nearby European city. That is a horrifying display of the power that a Neuroi of the second Neuroi war is potentially capable of... Keep
  • On the Amagi, an officer gets trapped in falling debris and the ship's captain is forced to close it. I'm not seeing the scary. Tense, maybe but not scary as written
  • When Yoshika and Shizuka enter a hospital in Gallia to help the injured, the latter witnesses firsthand the grisly nature of those injuries. grisly does not equal scary
  • Shizuka getting shot down from behind by the Neuroi. ZCE
  • Yoshika's head is bleeding the moment she gets sent flying into the ground by the Neuroi. Maybe, but needs a lot more context
  • In a scene in the movie we see Karlsland Flak 88 crews and Liberion M4 Sherman's is the Ardennes of East Belgica and Bastogne South Belgica respectively trying their best to fight against Medium type Neruoi air units. Despite the brave and valet effort of both units, it's quickly apparent that the fighting is desperate and bloody for the allied forces against sudden and hyper aggressive neuroi attacks. The Karsland Flak 88 crews are wiped out to a man and the Liberion Sherman's are not only forced back after their initial hostile combat volley but are not long after destroyed with shocking ease by mere Medium class Neruoi air units. These scenes show the terrifying risks being a non-witch, conventional infantry man must face and fight in the Neruoi war. War Is Hell, but might count. I could go either way

(Brave Witches Folder)

  • Takami exhausts her powers to the point of unconsciousness. ZCE
  • Hikari getting frozen in the icy water during a mission in Orussia. ZCE
    • The Fridge Horror sets in when you consider that for Hikari, when she was hit by a weaponized blizzard attack from a Neruoi weather control air unit; she was promptly subject to the early stages of onset hypothermia and both Sadoko and Georgette are deeply worried for her safty and well being; expression concern that she might freeze to death, succumbing to hypothermia. And consider that Hikari is a witch, and wither her magical power, even factoring she has lower then average magical potential; she was hit by an weaponized icy blast of cold air that took her to showing symptoms of hypothermia at all. Imagine what would have happened if a normal person without magic was hit by that same attack..... it's likely they would be frozen to death as a proverbial block of ice. Fridge Horror doesn't count IIRC
  • Towards the end of the series, Hikari realizes that Takami will use her Absolute Eye to exhaust her powers again and rushes out into the Final Battle to help. ZCE

[up]Oof, that page is really bad. The game's presentation style tends to deemphasize things that could be scary, so a lot just would not count. For example, the entire Agito section basically amounts to "these guys are bad!" Not that there aren't valid examples; compared to the rest of the game, the Heinwald and Curran section, being adapted from the works of H. P. Lovecraft, definitely stand out compared to the rest of the game.

[up] In regards to the Agito, Ciella's ability to conceal herself magically making her shots come from nowhere is the closest to NF, but would fit better in Paranoia Fuel. I agree that the other three don't fit.

Edit: Going to start scrubbing. If I miss any misuse (which is possible), let me know. I'll also leave a hidden comment to inform other editors what's going on.

It's clear that some work has been done with NightmareFuel.Kirby, considering the infamous Heavy Lobster entry is gone, but has the thread gone over the whole page? The last folder begins with bad indentation and ends with "Now, imagine...", and a lot of examples are ZCEs, while a lot of others are just scene summaries.

I at least haven't heard of anyone thinking Nightmare's battle music from Kirby's Adventure is scary. (Then again, I changed my avatar to Parallel Nightmare from Super Kirby Clash a bit ago, so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask.) That track got a remix in the last DLC pack for Kirby Star Allies and multiple remixes in Super Kirby Clash, and there are a lot of YouTube comments calling those remixes cool, and none calling them scary (menacing or tense, maybe, but this thread has already gone over how those aren't the same).

Also, while there are things in Kirby 64 people find scary (mainly in the later parts of the game), I'm pretty sure this isn't one of them:

The "death" sequence as Kirby. The scenery fades to black and Kirby stumbles around, then falls down... and during this, a loud, slow version of the regular Kirby death music appears out of nowhere.

What do you mean it came out of nowhere? Did you cover the life bar with tape?

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
