Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Hello. Regarding a potential example in Accel World:

  • Japanese Delinquents: Araya and his gang often terrorize Haruyuki by stealing his lunch money and picking fights with him for his low self-confidence.

It should probably be noted, for the sake of context, that the request comes as a result of this ATT thread where every instance of "bully" in Characters.Accel World was changed to "delinquents" and the particular entry was changed from Gang of Bullies to Japanese Delinquents. So, if I'm assuming correctly, the question regarding the entry of which term better applies

Yes, that's correct. I was concerned about which term regarding Araya better applies here since I edited that page which led to the ATT thread. Also, another example I'm thinking about:

  • Delinquent Hair: Araya has spiky red hair, pierced ears and is the leader of a gang that terrorized Haruyuki.

Does this count?

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S8 E15 "The Hearth's Warming Club":

  • Recycled Script: This episode has a similar twist to the Sofia the First episode "The Mystic Isles: A Very Mystic Wassailia", mainly in how a character (Chrysta in the former and Gallus here) is revealed to not have a family.

I've seen Recycled Script removed because it requires they they recycle from previous works of the creator or franchise, not just similar plots. Cut?

Does It Was His Sled require that even people who haven't seen the work in question know the twist? If so, I don't know if the Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters first season finale achieved this, yet. From the YMMV page:

  • It Was His Sled: The first season finale reveals that Rook is Stretch Monster . Go to any forum or video on the internet, and it'll be a major point of discussion. Despite this, the description for his figure hides this more effectively than the description for Blindstrike's figure does that character's secret.note

My understanding is that's what It Was His Sled is. A plot twist so well known that people who've never seen the work have heard of it.

I can't imagine a Stretch Armstrong cartoon meeting that threshold. The very fact that said sled was spoilered our belies its status as such a twist.

Yeah, It Was His Sled is about even non-watchers knowing about it.

It compares to All There Is To Know About The Crying Game where that is the only thing people know about the work, but both are about something so well-known it goes outside its own fandom.

Does this count as a Genre-Killer example? Seems more like someone finding another way to complain about The Asterisk War, and the series doesn't seem to affect the Wizarding School Battle Harem genre all that much.

[up][up][up]That's just complaining. You can't really have a Genre-Killer if you also at the same time describe a show of the same genre that was successful. And it's probably more that the isekai genre pushed it away a bit. Which, by the way, also on occasion include those Wizarding School Battle Harem settings, so it's not like that's dead.

[up][up][up][up]Fan-Preferred Couple is mutually exclusive with Official Couple.

Also, in addition to the examples I presented above, I would like to propose another trope:

  • Reality Ensues: After Araya hits Kuroyukihime in front of the whole school, the latter instantly gets expelled for this act due to violence being a ground for immediate expulsion. When he later tries to murder her with his car, Kuroyukihime gets sent to the hospital due to her injuries. In both instances, Araya also has to face legal consequences.

Does this count as a true example?

Death Note Equestria:

  • WTH, Casting Agency?: Twilight as Light Yagami. Seriously. The Adorkable Book Worm being cast in the role of Manipulative Bastard A God I Am delusionist is a bit of a streach. Especially when she used the Death Note to kill Rarity and Pinkie Pie, two of her closest friends and fellow wielders of the Elements of Harmony. The remorse she had over comitting that act be damned, it's hard to imagine Twilight ever doing such a thing, and sort of kills the Willing Suspension of Disbelief for some.
    • Fluttershy is an even bigger example. She's the Second Kira and she kills Sweetie Belle!

If it's not real life casting, does it count?

If nothing else, there's no actual casting, in the traditional sense.

...I'm curious whether there's any conceivable casting of My Little Pony characters in Death Note that would not provoke "What the hell?" reactions. Frankly, I can't even get through saying "My Little Pony characters in Death Note" at all without having one.

@ Gjjones: I always thought that Reality Ensues is when something happens in a realistic manner, even when viewers thought that a certain event would play by narrative conventions. It would also count as an example of Extraordinary World, Ordinary Problems.

Ok, somebody went all too happy with the Relationship Voice Actor trope and added these examples to Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai:

I thought Relationship Voice Actor only applied when the voice actors in question voice characters in a special relationship (lovers, siblings parents, what have you), not voice actors that work together by sheer coincidence. Does this qualify?

[up] Reality Ensues is when the realistic consequences of an action occur when one would expect the usual trope to be employed... and indeed when the characters themselves seem to behave as if the trope were employed. For example, most works have Soft Glass. If someone tries to jump through a window because they think it'll break like stunt glass and gets seriously injured (or flat out fails), then it's a case of Reality Ensues.

The important part is that it's a subversion of either the characters' or the audience's expectations. If a stock high school anime has characters suffer no meaningful consequences for violent behavior, then for one to actually depict those consequences would be unusual, and thus a valid example. If a stock high school anime has people suffering Amusing Injuries, then for one to depict serious injury in such a situation would be a valid example.

As for those Relationship Voice Actor examples... it doesn't require that the characters voiced by the actors be in a consistent relationship pattern, just that the same actors voice characters together in multiple works. Honestly the thing is so stupidly inane that I question why we even have it. At least it's in Trivia.

Honestly, I think it'd be a good idea to limit Relationship Voice Actor to actor pages. Since the "trope" is about multiple works that aren't much more than statistics supporting it, it doesn't really belong on a work page. While it's also about multiple actors, the focus of the trope is on the actors, so it still fits well on those pages.

[up][up][up]Right, so if I'm correct, the potential Reality Ensues entry for Accel World counts as an example. I could be wrong.

[up]As for the Relationship Voice Actor concerns, should we also do a cleanup thread for it on the Projects forum?
