Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Could someone take a look at these examples.

YMMV.Maximum Ride:

  • Ass Pull: When the kids develop all kinds of new powers in The Final Warning, there's no proper explanation for why they've got those kinds of powers in particular, or for why they all got the new powers at roughly the same time even though they're of different ages.
  • Author's Saving Throw: The entirety of Maximum Ride Forever could be viewed as an attempt to patch the disastrously-received ending of Nevermore. Let's just say it didn't work.

ComicBook.Max Ride First Flight:

  • Adaptation Distillation: The plot is greatly simplified, with many of the New York scenes (such as one where the Flock visits a fancy restaurant) excised completely.

ComicBook.The Multiversity:

  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Despite being a main character in the Guidebook issue, the only clue to Chibi!Dick Grayson's fate in Multiversity #1 is during a brief montage, where it's shown that he was hanged by the Atomic Knights.

Film.Project Almanac:

  • Noodle Incident: These start popping up towards the end of the film, events occur that are never explained and NOT EVEN the protagonists know what happened hinting that something has gone horribly wrong.

VIRGINS:

6. As TALENTED GIRLS. These are very likely, towards the end of the second third of the Tour, to come across a male Tourist in his BATH and turn implausibly to jelly (a surge of some deep, hitherto unknown emotion swept through her (OMT)). Thereafter they have a sprightly step, a jaunty gleam in the eyes, a yet more tiptilted nose, and a private life over which the Management generally draws a discreet veil.

Are the tropes Cool Old Guy and Cool Old Lady incompatible with Older Than They Look and Really 700 Years Old? Because I've been thinking of adding Mahou Sensei Negima! character Evangeline A.K. McDowell as a Cool Old Lady, seeing as several members of the Badass Crew Ala Rubra from the same work (the closest thing she has to "peers"... despite her being centuries older than most if not all of them) are listed on Cool Old Guy.

I would count it if their age is anything more than a number. Evangeline is only old in numbers, not personality.

I have a question about the examples on Author Vocabulary Calendar as the description is a little different to understand due to being a Self-Demonstrating Article. If the use of the word is justified, does it still count as this trope an example of the trope. I ask because one of the examples on the page is:

  • The Ciaphas Cain book Duty Calls may create an allergy to the word "scuttling" (as in "scuttling horrors", "scuttling movement", "scuttling noises" and everything else related to Tyranids) in its readers.
    • Absolutely anything out of the ordinary (but especially things relating to Hypercompetent Sidekick Jurgen) can be described as "preternatural".

Scuttling is pretty much justified as the Tyranids are partially insectoid in nature and this is a common word for how insects move and preternatural is a relatively common term for things out of the ordinary.

[up][up] She only acts like a child when she's grumpy — which is admittedly a lot of the time, partly due to highly restricted freedom of movement caused by Nagi's curse, which also forces her to attend middle school unless she's given excused by her classroom teacher. Can you imagine you, an adult, having to attend middle school fifteen years in a row? No wonder Evangeline is easily pissed off; for UQ Holder's many flaws, it does manage to show that a few years/decades of restored freedom can do wonders to an immortal's mood.

... Anyway, yeah, she seems immature because she has a short fuse and an injured ego, compounded by accumulating frustration with little to no outlets (hence why she goes all giddy like a kid at the candy store right before curbstomping a massive demon). She has quite some profound wisdom to impart to Negi at certain points during her Training from Hell (when they're alone), wisdom that befits someone who lived for several centuries and saw both the good and the bad in humanity (mostly the latter, unfortunately; being a vampire is no fun when the muggles fear/hate your kind so much they want your head/heart on a burning stake at all costs).

Would the great fairy from The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time be an example of a Butter Face? In game her "ugliness" seems more of an issue of technology limitation.

Is Abnormal Ammo still Abnormal Ammo if they are still plainly bullets but made with unusual metals? Is that not Depleted Phlebotinum Shells?

Relevant example:

Judas rounds from Luke Cage (2016) which are bullets made from Chitauri metal.

Tossing out a quick one I posted earlier, unsure if it falls under Glass Cannon, Fragile Speedster, both, or neither:

  • In the Safehold series, the antagonistic navy of Dohlar develops "screw galleys", ships driven by man-powered propellers. Their fronts are armored and mount the most powerful guns Dohlar has. They are also faster and more maneuverable than the protagonists' sail-based galleons. However, they are firmly restricted to use in coastal waters due to being too fragile to hold up to blue sea waves and weather and that same fragility means that unless they can keep their armored fronts facing their adversary any solid hit will severely damage or destroy them. Yet, if the screw galleys can keep their fronts facing the enemy, their armor can protect them from most weapons while their guns are enough to take on any ship the protagonists' navy has short of their own ironclads and, even then, are instrumental in defeating and capturing one.

I'd say neither. It's Crippling Overspecialization.

[up]I was wondering if Crippling Overspecialization could fit too. I wasn't sure on that one either since the only thing that really cripples them is their inability to work in blue sea water. Something galleys in the series were already noted to be weak at, with the screw galleys simply being worse at it.

For Maximum Ride I've never read the series but as written it sounds like an example. What's your basis for questioning its validity?

The Author's Saving Throw example is speculation. Chop it out.

Adaptation Distillation and Dropped a Bridge on Him seem like examples to me, though "Chibi!" needs to be cut out, as that naming convention is discouraged.

Project Almanac seems like Big-Lipped Alligator Moment. Definitely not Noodle Incident though

I'd say yes. The gender of the creature isn't important to the trope.

The following are just draft write-ups, so they haven't been used in any page yet; but I want to make sure I am not misusing the tropes concerned.

  • Cunning Linguist: Her epithet is "the Language Expert," after all. While the franchise doesn't have many occasions involving foreign languages (and it'd more than likely to be French if there is), in those occasions she learns the languages in question—computer languages included—in semi-Instant Expert speed.
  • The Social Expert: His epithet is this, word-by-word. However, he's a subverted case; he is The Face and The Heart of The Team with The Charmer traits, but never appears to be manipulative.

YMMV.The Book Of Life:

YMMV.Ex Machina:

  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: One of the lyrics of the song that plays in the dance scene is "work your fingers to the bone". Later when Caleb watches the video Jade banging her arms on the door, her fingers are the first to disintegrate. Additionally, her arms worked to the bone.

YMMV.The Fault In Our Stars:

  • Narm: Hazel's infinity quotenote  might lose its impact and become laughable when you learn that it's mathematically incorrect. While some infinities are bigger than other infinities - the set of all rational numbers is for instance smaller than the set of all real numbers - the intervals [0, 1], [0, 2] and [0, 1000000] actually contain the same amount of real numbers.

ComicBook.Future Quest:

  • Revisiting the Roots: The Hanna-Barbera action hero lineup note  has spent many more years as parodies of themselves than they spent as actual action heroes. This comic is possibly the most notable return to the characters' original premises in over two decades.

Do video games provide Knife and Sword Fight examples if there's no theatrical Flynning or other dramatics, just that two opposite sides/combatants are wielding knives/swords?

Mainly for 2D RPGs like of RPG Maker, or Final Fantasy.

[up][up]Hilarious in Hindsight is absolutely not an example: as was discussed recently somewhere else, there's nothing "hilarious" about "character A has some coincidental similarities to later character B".
