Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Alright, so Eating Optional is about beings who don't need to eat food, but still desire so. Would the trope apply to a being who has it on a much, much, much wider scale?

  • Hours (2020): Implied, as the Invader has the strongest desire to own something, yet doesn't have anything at all to its name. Literally anything. That means most likely food isn't needed, yet it still craves it.

Side note here, I feel like there's a better trope for the Invader's desire. Something related to curses.

A while back (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13543987200A54420100&page=1074#comment-26830) an entry was deleted from Audience-Alienating Ending because it focused too much on general complaints of the work rather than its actual ending. I agree with that decision but it makes me question this entry for Game of Thrones:

  • The final season of Game of Thrones was widely considered one of the worst of the show, if not the worst, and a demoralizing conclusion to something so beloved at the start of its run. Fans and critics attacked nearly every aspect of the show: plot holes, pointless twists, idiotic battle strategies, unsatisfying conclusions, and irrational decisions all around. Only the costumes, sets, music and special effects maintained their quality, and the only people who had a good word to say about the final season were those primarily there for the spectacle rather than the plot or characters. Even then the quality of filming seemed to suffer, such as the infamous incident where a modern coffee cup was left on a table during one of the scenes (the show is set in a medieval world), or the water bottle left behind a chair. And while the early seasons' twists and betrayals made sense, the showrunners themselves admitted that for later seasons they chose to write merely what was shocking or unexpected, regardless of whether it made sense. Beth Elderkin at i09 noted that "It's kind of amazing how one of the biggest shows of the 21st century is now just something that happened". All that being said, it’s a bit of a miracle that the prequel series, House of the Dragon, managed to be the success it was. ///

I've never watched Game of Thrones and this entry doesn't convey to me what's wrong with its specific ending (as in the finale) these just seem to be broad complaints about the final season as a whole. And based on the rest of the page it can't be about an entire movie or season, even if it's the final installment, it has to be about its specific ending. So any idea how to rewrite this?

Either Brick Joke or Foreshadowing:

  • The Powerpuff Girls (1998): At the beginning of "Three Girls and a Monster" when the hotline rings, Blossom and Buttercup argue over who will pick it up, but Bubbles beats them to it. In the end, it's Bubbles who ends up saving the day by just politely asking the monster to leave.

I found this entry in Quietly Cancelled, but part of me thinks it belongs on Development Hell instead, since it never got a release to begin with. Where do we sort this?

  • Wonder Park was intended to spinoff into a TV series, but between the film's box office failure and Dylan Brown's firing; little has been said of it since its initial announcement. Paramount and Nickelodeon removed the TV show from their list of upcoming content for the 2019-2020 season and have not commented on the matter since.

[up]Development Hell seems to need, well, some development that we know of (e.g. scripts that the studio doesn't like, attached director who drops out or somesuch). If it's just a "yeah we have plans" announcement but nothing else is heard to make us think that they're actively working on it, I'd just remove it.

[up][up]I don't see how that's either, just consistent characterization. Doesn't Bubbles have the best social graces of the three in general?

[up][up][up]The entire final season was generally disliked, but the specific finale was also disliked. I had stopped watching a few seasons prior but I know Jon (hero-protagonist) killing Daenerys (ex-hero protagonist) after she breaks bad and Bran sitting the Iron Throne in the end are still derided to this day.

The only trope in Green Arrow is Follow the Leader, but most of the examples seem to be Natter, complaining or just plain misuse:

  • Follow the Leader: The Arrowcar, Arrowsignal, Arrowcave... it's no wonder Batman asks, "Did you ever have an original idea?"
    • The irony being that The Arrowcave predated the Batcave, first appearing in More Fun Comics #73 (November 1941). The Batcave made its first appearance in Batman #12. (August 1942) Invalidates the preceding example
    • Gloriously lampshaded in a story in which another character discovers the abandoned Arrowcave under the former Queen mansion, and realizes that Oliver Queen must secretly be... Batman! Ultimately results in Ollie fighting the bad guys of the story in a Batman costume, complete with very visible beard. Gushing
    • Taken to new lows in one Judd Winick issue of Green Arrow / Black Canary, where it is basically said that the only reason Oliver Queen adopted Roy Harper was to "keep up with the Joneses" after Bruce Wayne took in Dick Grayson. Also a mistake as Green Arrow was working with Speedy before Batman had Robin, according to JLA: Year One. Complaining
    • Mocked by Harley Quinn in the Injustice: Gods Among Us comic where she said that "arrows don't live in caves; they're inanimate objects, they don't live at all". She suggests he calls the place "The Quiver" instead, and Ollie ends up admitting that's a better name. Natter
    • The tie-in comic for Young Justice (2010) states that in the show's continuity, Ollie did indeed decide to take on Speedy as a sidekick after seeing the positive reception Batman and Robin were getting. It's implied that Aquaman and Martian Manhunter took on Aqualad and Miss Martian for similar reasons. In-Universe reaction
    • As mentioned in the Expy section, Emiko was very clearly inspired by Damian Wayne, to the point that she could arguably be called a Distaff Counterpart. During Ben Percy's run, her relationship with Oliver ends up greatly resembling that of Hawkeye and Kate Bishop, albeit if Kate was younger; Emiko's bratty behaviour being phased out by this point helps with that. Expy entry that also has speculation and potential Fan Myopia

Is there anything salvageable or should the article be sent to the cut list?

These entries have been added for the Curious Cat on Characters.RWBY The Ever After, but I would like other opinions on whether they're shoehorning.

Regarding the Evil Counterpart entry: Ruby's struggling with despair over her mistakes and failures because of her unhealthy, misguided belief that she needs to be perfect; the Cat was designed by the gods with a fatal flaw that eventually drives it to insanity and villainy (it can fix all broken hearts but its own). It's desperately trying to find the gods that abandoned it, and thinks possessing Ruby will allow it to travel to her world in search of answers. However, it can only possess broken souls, so it decides to exploit Ruby's despair via a Despair Gambit to break her enough for posession. While it's easy for fans to find overlaps, the work itself hasn't made them foils of any kind.

In the case of Mirror Character, the work makes absolutely no attempt to compare and contrast the Cat and Salem, and the two have never even met or interacted with each other either.

The examples:

  • Evil Counterpart: The Cat's true character reflects Ruby's Heroic Fatigue throughout Volume 9, and it shows what Ruby could have become if she hadn't found her way out of it. Both of them started out as a kind person who revitalized the spirits of their peers when they were weary or misguided, but was never expected by those around them to equally need someone who could fix their spirit in turn; driving them to anger, despair and isolation as their mental problems mounted with no-one acting to alleviate them. The Cat's ability to disguise the extent of their instability from Alyx and Team RWBY also reflects how Ruby's own mounting troubles went unnoticed by all her friends until her breaking point, which in turn reflects real-life failures to detect depression. Whereas Ruby found her way back out from her funk, the Cat tragically remained lost to madness and bitterness up until their permanent death.

  • Mirror Character: They serve as one to Salem, being the manipulative villain of the Ever After where she is the manipulative villain of Remnant. Both the Curious Cat and Salem are cursed by the Gods, unable to move on to the next phase of life (death for Salem, ascension for the Cat), were abandoned by those Gods, lash out at all of humanity for a previous betrayal by one they trusted, and are now plotting to reunite with them while using the humans of Remnant as pawns by crushing their hearts. The crucial difference between the two is that Salem was deliberately cursed out of the Gods' spite, while the Cat was accidentally cursed out of the Gods' carelessness, demonstrating that even the Gods' best intentions would be corrupted if they had no capacity for change.

[up][up][up][up]I want to drop that last line about House of the Dragon, for starters - it's both gushy and inaccurate given that it's a pretty widespread consensus that GOT's downfall was the fault of 1) overtaking the source material and 2) the showrunners very specifically (the entry even talks about how most of the other elements remained high-quality) so it's not terribly surprising that a show with different showrunners and completed source material wouldn't have the same problems.

[up]I want to say that's a different trope (which I don't know if we have), but I'm a splitter these days.

[up][up]That's not at all an example of Working with the Ex, nor is it an accurate representation of the plot. There's no "working with": she explicitly only visited for emotional closure, did not intend to get the memento from him (he asks her to take it with him and she only does because she gets upset), the ex only shows up for that one scene and does not contribute anything else to the plot, and it is not until much later that they learn the memento is Kind Of Important. At best it's Small Role, Big Impact for the guy

Almost made an Ask The Tropers query but decided to bring it here.

From Ai Shite Night's YMMV page

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/AishiteNight

  • Moe:
    • The reason why Yakko is a Dude Magnet. A sweet, innocent, romantic girl who doesn't even realize how cute and charming she is. All the female characters in the series are the opposite of her: outspoken, confident, and aggressively chasing boys, so Yakko stands out as the naive, unassuming Obliviously Beautiful one.
    • Hashizo is supposed to be this, as he's a precocious Cheerful Child who is considered adorable even by Yakko's grumpy father. However, fans find him too clingy and whiny, so he's more of a Base-Breaking Character.

I have a problem with the Hashizo example. I really like the kid and he's super endearing to me, so I wanted to leave alone since I could be biased and the entry doesnt say he's a scrappy as much as he is Base Breaking.

But I thought about it some more and Moe wasnt even a concept in the 80's when this media franchise was released. Furthermore, since the concept of Moe didnt exist back then the producers and the Mangaka couldnt have invoked this. The final nail is the fact that YMMV cant be played with.

I'm confused on if this example from Breaking Bad is a valid instance of Draco in Leather Pants

  • While Hank isn't evil, many fans like to ignore his flaws such as his hypocritical behavior, like when he thought Hugo the janitor was a scumbag for smoking weed but was perfectly fine smoking illegal cuban cigars. His poor treatment of Marie in season 4 is often forgotten, ignored, or justified due to his mental state. This is especially true in season 5 where he tries force Skyler into a confession and shows no concern over Jesse's possible death. Regardless of his methods, it's questionable whether we should side with him in his investigation as his primary motive seems to be spite against Walt. While Walt should be punished for his actions, it doesn't seem like any lives would be improved by Hank catching him after he retired. By going solo in his quest to bring down Walt, then later roping in Gomez but not involving the DEA, he got Gomez and himself killed. He was aware of whom Walt had killed and that he must still have allies, yet took Gomez into a deadly situation without arranging any backup, entirely because he personally wanted to take Walt down. He is also shown taking advantage of his power to bully Wendy the prostitute for no other reason than he can. He's also an unrepentant casual racist. All the way back in the pilot, his mean spirited mocking of Walt and disdain for his life is part of what pushed Walt into Heisenberg in the first place. Despite all of this, most Breaking Bad fans will tell you that Hank's some kind of saint.
I believe the trope is referring to a villain being viewed in a sympathetic light by the audience, even when it isn't deserved and I don't think Hank is viewed as a villain in-universe so thoughts?

Is this misuse? From Characters.Ru Pauls Drag Race Season 6:

  • No-Damage Run: Bianca made it all the way to her crowning without ever placing lower than safe, let alone landing in the bottom throughout the competition. She represents the very first of an illustrious group of queens who reached their season finale never placing below safe.

(There are quite a few similar examples on other Drag Race pages)

Looking at the trope page, I'm reading this as purely a video game trope, as a self-imposed challenge or for some extra reward.

Neither of those applies here. Cut?

On Raoul's character sheet in Mega Man Battle Network 2, there are these two tropes:

The thing I am bit confused with is that Raoul is a Native Netopian, which in Fantasy Counterpart Culture sense means that he is Native American. Does he qualify for at least the former trope, or is his ethnicity a deal-breaker?

Can something count as Bile Fascination if it's only considered bad due to a misinterpretation of what the work actually is?

Specifically, I'm thinking of the infamous Zootopia fan comic, I Will Survive. It got a lot of attention and infamy for being "the pro-life Zootopia comic", and most of those who read it do so because they're fascinated at the thought that someone tried using Zootopia characters to moralize about abortion. However, the comic wasn't actually meant to push an anti-abortion message (it's actually intended as a character study), so this criticism is unfounded, but the reaction still exists regardless.

In that game a character can be accused of Insurance Fraud when you are asked to identify the culprit of a crime. Is it still an example if the character is only accused but didn't actually do it? It's not outright a Discussed Trope and I don't think it counts as a subversion.

On South Park:

  • South Park and Ed, Edd n Eddy fans tend to be a mixed bag due to both shows being extremely similar. While both shows have managed to avoid becoming rivals, they're dancing in-between. Some fans of the former enjoy the latter for its funny humor and characters and find it to be a good show overall while other fans view Ed, Edd n Eddy as a blatant copy of South Park.

I've never seen anybody accuse EENE of "copying" South Park, they're two totally different shows made for different audiences?

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
