Go To

The 20 Minute YTP Challenge is a series of YouTube Poops created by people on The Real Xbox Nerd's Discord server. The series remixes episodes of various children's shows popular in the United Kingdom. The format is as follows for each 'round': after randomly selecting one or two episodes of the chosen show(s) using number wheels, the contributors each choose one or more scenes from the episode(s) to remix. Each contributor is only allowed 20 minutes of editing time per episode, resulting in short video segments that are then collected and edited into a single video.

To date, there have been fifty 'rounds' of the challenge with over forty participants between them.

Series included in the challenge (in order of appearance)

The 20 Minute YTP Challenge proves examples of the following tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Several Thomas rounds have taken audio clips from Michael Angelis' other works.
  • Author Appeal: Certain contributors have their own trademarks:
    • Amber the Fangirl uses Transformers references in her works.
    • Pink Delilah Teanote  uses a lot of songs in her segments. Lampshaded in the Summer Holiday Special
Bulgy: Bah. Music is all you live for.
    Him: He's right.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: In Round 30, The Fat Controller declares he has a ram fetish, much to everyone's disgust.
  • Black Comedy Rape: Happens several times. It doesn't matter what you are, you are not safe in the slightest.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: NG after finding about the Tots TV house, which is supposed to be a secret.
NG: OH MY GOD I GOTTA TELL EVERYONE I GOTTA TELL ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE HOLY SH-
  • Duck Season, Rabbit Season: Bertie attempts this on Thomas in Round 9. It doesn't work.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • The first ten rounds, aside from Round 8, exclusively used Thomas & Friends model episodes as a source. While Thomas's widespread popularity drew attention from viewers, the contributors had begun to tire of the material, so they first used Round 8 as a break from Thomas before completely diversifying their sources from Round 11 onward.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The Trap Door and Gran appear in the Anything Goes Round and Secret Santa Rounds respectively before being added to the specials.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode:
    • Round 29 uses audio from the The Railway Series audiobooks and edited still images from the picture books rather than footage and audio from the Thomas & Friends model episodes. While the results were impressive, the extra work involved caused the contributors to agree not to repeat the experiment.
    • In Round 35, instead of making an actual YTP, MONTAGUE reads reviews for Bob the Builder on Google.
MONTAGUE: What... the fuck... was that?
The Thomas and TUGS man: No idea, MONTAGUE.
    • Round 40, the Anything Goes Special, as well as its sequel, allowed contributors to independently choose sources, resulting in a diverse pool of shows being represented. Similarly, Round 50, The Secret Santa Round, had participants pick sources to give to other participants to poop.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: In Round 26, Duke reaches out of the screen to grab the viewer.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: The Fat Controller declares that he'll replace the foghorn with Cyril, whose head has been replaced with a bowl of cereal. Topham decides to eat said cereal.
    Cyril: HELP!
  • It's Snowing Cocaine: Thomas crashes into a snowdrift in Round 49, only to find out that it's cocaine. He proceeds to snort it until he dies from an overdose.
  • Multiple Gunshot Death: Happens to Jones the Steam after he cracks a joke to the fox hunters.
  • Mythology Gag: In Round 1, when Henry sneezes soot on the stone-throwing boys, we get this reference to the original The Railway Series story "Henry's Sneeze."
Narrator: The boys were as black as ni- *end credits*
  • Named by the Adaptation: In Trainsandtugs YTP's entry for Round 29, Sixteen is named "Sick Tom," and doesn't have a number.
  • Noodle Incident:
Thomas: If fish get into an engine's boiler, they always suck your dick, and I know what I'm talking about...
  • Potty Failure: A common trope in the challenge.
  • Razor Apples: In Halloween Hijinks, the Fat Controller plots to put razor blades in the Halloween candy at the beginning of the round. At the end, he ends up accidentally eating one.
  • Repeat What You Just Said: Harold's response to Rusty calling him a cheeky chopper.
  • Running Gag: Several, actually.
  • Running Gagged: Happens in the form of Peter B. Parker saying "Don't you dare finish that sentence!"
  • Shout-Out!:
    • In Round 8:
MONTAGUE: Floor Love. We don't have a fucking clue either.
    • In Round 13:
"Bob and the gang have sex all day!"
    • Another CartoonLover98 reference in Round 49:
Narrator: [Toby] had no eyes. *Toby's eyes disappear as the THX Deep Note plays*
  • Subverted Punchline: In Round 41, A Better View for Gordon was pooped. Despite this episode being the origins of the Station Joke, it doesn't appear until the very end of the round.
  • Super-Strength:
    • In Round 43, the Fat Controller throws Peter Sam at the incline.
    • In Round 45, Douglas does the same to Donald.
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending:
    • In Round 45, Baioco Island Films' entry for the Break Van segment has Donald and the Spiteful Brakevan becoming firm friends who often have tea together.
  • Take That!!:
  • Take That, Audience!: Rounds 25 and 37's Cold Opens are these to fans who repeatledly request specific shows for challenges. Round 25 has a Bait-and-Switch Credits of Victorious only to cut to Thomas, while Round 37 uses the party scene from Shrek Forever After with The Real Xbox Nerd as Shrek.
  • Toilet Humor: Crops up occasionally, but Gordon is strongly associated with it due to his habit of saying "Poop poop poop" to emulate his deep whistle in early Thomas & Friends stories. Round 27 poops "Edward, Gordon, and Henry" and includes Gordon's line: "I'm going to 'poop poop' at Henry," and the joke was so obvious that nobody seemed able to help themselves.
"Right, we've done the same thing because we're stupid."
  • You Didn't Ask: Sir Handel's reasoning for not warning Peter Sam that he had COVID-19 and getting him sick.
