Tropes

  • Artistic License – Law:
    • In Real Life, the late fees for the gang's overdue library books would be waved and they wouldn’t demand the exact copies. This is justified because Percival is just doing it to get personal possessions so that he can use Sympathetic Magic against the heroes.
    • Libraries are funded by the county, so Percival would have to convince the county library system and go through meetings instead of just closing it on a whim. Although between Hiram turning the town into a Soiled City on a Hill and Percival’s Mind Control ability, he could have gotten around the county.
  • Candlelit Ritual: Percival casts a spell.
  • Contrived Coincidence:
    • Every single one of the protagonists had one overdue library book.
    • Because of Doc, almost everyone’s books ended up at Barney’s Book Barn in Pennsylvania.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: Pickens does this with Kevin.
  • Evil Is Petty: Pickens doesn't just torment the protagonists with witchcraft that picks at old wounds, he starts off going after all of them for overdue library books, taking away their possessions as collateral with the help of armed men. He also takes great pleasure in shutting down Riverdale Public Library.
  • Exact Words: The reason why that one old man is still in the homeless camp when Percival used his powers to make the others leave? Because Percival had told them "start walking and don't stop until you reach the ocean." As the man points out to Jughead, that compulsion is useless when you're in a wheelchair.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Kevin and Reggie both join up with Percival by the end of the episode.
  • Kiss of Death: Veronica is venomous, and accidentally kills her grandmother's security guy Heraldo by kissing him while they have sex.
  • The Murder After: After having sex, Veronica wakes up the next morning to find Heraldo dead next to her. This is what leads her to discover that she is venomous to others.
  • The Reveal:
    • Veronica's superpower is to kill people with venom that she secretes by kissing them.
    • Betty’s pregnancy test from the previous episode comes back negative. While she and Archie are relieved, they also hope to become parents.
    • Reggie had dyslexia as a child, and his overdue book was a book on how to read with the condition.
  • Shout-Out: Cheryl’s book is Flowers in the Attic.
  • Ultimate Authority Mayor: Percival wastes no time in acting more like a king than a mayor.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Reggie sides with Pickens, wanting to learn magic from him.
    • Veronica accidentally kills a man by kissing him, revealing her superpower.
    • Betty realizes that her father had been a serial killer for years, long before the events of the second season.
  • Written-In Absence: Unlike Toni and Fangs, Tabitha’s absence is mentioned by Jughead, who tells the others that Tabitha’s in Albany trying to get Pop’s declared a landmark.
