Tropes

  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The Newspaper article at the beginning of the episode, says "Carcosa Carnival comes to Riverdale“ it’s the Carnival that appears in Part 3 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
  • Ignored Epiphany: played with, Burble points out to Veronica that for all her talk about hating her father, Veronica is trying to basically be him as part of some vicious Electra complex cycle, and if she really wants to distance herself she should go to Harvard like her dad wants her to and from there dissociate herself from him. Veronica not only ignores this, but decides to start her own rum business making her even more like her father, but (See trope below).
  • Internal Deconstruction: Many of the characters are given real world mental disorders for their issues and it’s shown how mentally damaging their lives have become.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Sure, Burble may be incredibly blunt but she makes excellent points on each person:
    • That after everything she's been through, Cheryl is naturally mentally disturbed.
    • Veronica rails about her terrible home life but Burble points out she's willingly living in a mansion with the father she claims to despise.
    • Archie is only acting out in anger at his father's death and this path will lead to self-destruction.
    • Betty is acting up more in rebellion while Alice wants to control her to get back some of her lost youth.
    • That Jughead is seeing his grandfather as a wronged hero and not the incredibly flawed man that Jughead's dad experienced. She also points out his persecution complex and the blunt fact that, driven to it or not, his teacher killed himself and wasn't "murdered."
  • Parental Favoritism: Alice openly admits that she loves Betty far more than Polly (and even Charles).
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Cheryl opens up about her lost sibling, Mrs. Burble explains that she can get a genetic test to see if it’s true. Cheryl is shocked both by this and the results.
  • Tantrum Throwing: After Veronica rejects going to Harvard (which Hiram bribed to accept her) to go to Yale instead, swearing she'll destroy him financially, and taking a drink from the Lodges' first bottle of rum, Hiram throws the cup Veronica drank from in anger.
  • Wham Episode: By episode’s end, we find out that Cheryl didn’t absorb a supposed third sibling and that she realized Mrs. Burble is right in the fact someone is gasliting her so Cheryl will believe she’s crazy.
    • Mrs. Burble diagnoses Veronica with both the Oedipus and Electra complexes, which means it's time to cut ties with Hiram before the dance of death kills her. While ignoring the harvard taking option Veronica informs her father that she’s going to kill him — not literally of course. She's going to make her own rum and take him down on the battlefield of business. And once that's done, their dance of death will be over for good. Also, she's going to Yale.
    • Jughead (after realizing he too obsess with the conspiracy and lionizing his abusive grandfather) discovered that every member of the Quill and Skull society except his MIA grandfather and Francis J. DuPont died in a variety of highly suspicious freak accidents.
