S2 - Ep 7: Death To Normality - Part 2

Luz's fight with Sophia continues even as Gravesfield suffers from it. As the battle reaches its climax after she gains a new Quirk, another assassin joins the fray.

This chapter contains examples of:

  • Ability Mixing: Shigaraki advises Luz to try some more of this.
    • By using both Multiplier and Forcefield Projection against Sophia, to create several forcefields forming a multi-layered barrier. Each having the same level of offense and defense capabilities as the original. She can also one massive, building-sized one with her Giant Hands of Doom.
    • Later in the fight, she combines "Multiplier" and "Spear Fingers". Its this that finally kills Sophia Humbolt.
    • She immediately uses her new "Zero Gravity" Quirk with her Super-Strength to levitate the surrounding rubble to get past 3-ton limit.
    • Luz also uses Zero Gravity on herself, in conjunction with "Airwalk", to simulate true, powered Flight.
  • All Girls Like Ponies: The shirt Luz steals from the knocked out girl was pink with a unicorn on it.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Seeing the Smog Quirk user, Shigaraki reminisces about it. Deeming it to be too impractical for him to use, he used it a Quirk project (heavily implied to be Kurogiri) but died before could see it succeed. We can only hope that Eraserhead's high-school friend is at peace.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Sophia's attacks destroys Luz's right arm and both her legs more than once. Good Thing You Can Heal, Luz.
  • Anti-Regeneration: Subverted. According to Luz's Evil Mentor, while the acidic properties of Jonah's Super Smoke Quirk won't hinder her Healing Factor, it can still bypass her "Pain Nullification".
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Sophia's more than a little confident in her (admittedly) powerful Quirk and was a MMA fighter before she became an assassin.
  • Attack on the Heart: One of Luz's Spear Fingers pierces Sophia's heart.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Jonah's Smog can eat away at anything it comes across. The problem with that attack, however, is that it takes the user’s full concentration, which is why All For One never used it and recommends Luz to not bother stealing it.
  • Badass Arm-Fold: Sophia does this with a Psychotic Smirk while declaring she can't kill her after emerging from the dust unharmed.
  • Badass Finger Snap: When the hitwoman fire a red blast at Luz's Forcefield Cannon, she surprises our hero by doing this which turning the red, repelling attack into the blue, sucking attack.
  • Best for Last: Jonah implies the Golden Guard is this.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Sophia does this as she dies to Luz.
  • Blood Knight: Sophia appears to love a good fight often giving a Psychotic Smirk when fighting Luz, which confuses the girl. Sophia complains to Jonah for intervening as she wanted to fight Luz one-on-one, even if it got her killed.
  • Body Horror: The injuries Sophia causes Luz certainly apply her, including a mangled arm, especially when she takes a full blast of the assassin's attack.
Luz was hit point blank with Red, and once again, since she had been blown up by Riley, she felt pain. Her body seared in agony as her skin was practically boiled off of her body. Bones shattered, and muscles liquified. It was like being caught between a rock and a nuclear warhead.
  • Call-Back: Luz notes she regrets giving away the intelligence Quirk.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Luz does this and makes All For One feel nostalgic.
    Luz: Forcefield Cannon!
  • Collateral Damage: Despite Luz's best efforts, this skyrockets as the chapter goes on.
  • Clothing Damage: Luz suffers this again and ends stealing some clothes from a bystander.
  • Combination Attack: He can combined his "Smog" with Sophia's "Limitless" Red orb turning it from purple to black, allowing it to eat away at Luz's multi-layered forcefield to let the Energy Ball through her defenses!
  • Cool vs. Awesome: Sophia sees the fight between her and Luz as this.
Sophia: You know, this is like something ripped out of one of those oriental comic books, isn’t it? Two powerhouses fighting against one another. My Limitless versus your wide variety of powers.
  • Conveniently Empty Building: Averted, Many people in the buildings die as the superhuman attacks cause them to collapse on top of them.
  • Dark Is Evil: Jonah's gas is deadliest when it turns black and is one of the most evil characters in the story,.
  • Deadly Gas: Jonah can make his purple smog turn black acting as a gaseous form of an Acid Attack.
  • Death Glare: Luz gives one to Sophia.
  • Dies Wide Open: This happens to Sophia, dying to Luz's hands.
  • Elemental Shapeshifter: Jonah can turn his whole body into smoke to dodge attacks.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Unlike most of the other enemies Luz kills, Sophia doesn't die afraid or begging for her life while conscious but instead she sees death at the second All For One user's hands A Good Way to Die due to being a Worthy Opponent.
  • A Good Way to Die: Sophia considers death at the hands of Luz, the most powerful opponent she ever faced, to be this.
  • Gravity Master: The "Zero Gravity" Quirk originally belonged to a girl by the name of Juniper, someone who was caught in the crossfire during the battle between Luz and the Wittebane Assassin, before Luz stole it. This Quirk allows the user the ability to remove the gravity of anything that they come into physical contact with using her hands. This Quirk is an exact replica of Ochako Uraraka's Quirk from My Hero Academia.
  • Half The Man Heused To Be: Taking a direct hit Sophia's Red Energy Ball causes Luz to lose the right-side of her body. Fortunately, her "Super Regeneration" saves her again.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: How she meets her end by Luz's hands with Spear Fingers enhanced by Multiplier through all her vital areas.
  • Implacable Man: Sophia sees Luz as this with her insane healing and determination.
Sophia: Even after hitting her point blank with Red, she’s recovered almost completely. It was just as Bombardier warned. No matter how much punishment you dish out, she’ll just come back from it.
  • Kick the Dog: Luz, we understand you needed a new shirt and pants due to the Clothing Damage you suffered from your fights in Gravesfield, but did you really have to knock out a random bystander and steal it from her, leaving the poor girl in her underwear?
  • Lack of Empathy: Even when notices all the carnage her battle with Luz doing, sophia's more concerned about winning against Luz than the safety of innocent bystanders.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Luz notices that several innocent bystanders were killed the crossfire of her fight with Sophia and turned into this as a result.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite her Quirk being called "Limitless", it does, in fact have limits. When testing out just what the limits had been with Riley, and Sophia calculated that it took about 200,000 Newtons of pure, unrelenting force to prevent Blue from sucking up anymore, filling it to its limit. That kind of power could only be found in Hypersonic Cruise Missiles.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Luz and Sophia's fight destroys a good portion of Gravesfield with their Quirks. Throughout the chapter, several buildings are destroyed from each of their attacks. Luz believes if doesn't the fight soon the whole town will be turned to rubble.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Jonah calls Luz a shorty, yet she's a very powerful superhuman.
  • Power Palms: After Luz steals Juniper's Quirk, she gains dog-like pads on her fingertips.
  • Pragmatic Hero; Luz not only knocks out an innocent girl to steal her clothes but steals her Quirk to give herself a better chance to take Sophia and end the chaotic fight between them.
  • Purple Is Powerful: When Luz is using her "Zero Gravity" Quirk, the objects that float are covered in a purple aura which she uses with devastating effect.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • A lot of civilians do this as Luz and Sophia's battle escalates so that they don't get killed in the crossfire. Not of them make it.
    • At one point, Luz tries to retreat... giving Sophia the opening she was waiting her as Luz takes full blast of what appears to be the killing blow... But once again she survives and is forced to get back in the fight.
  • Slasher Smile: Jonah tries to use his black smog to eat through Luz's body faster than she can regenerate, and uses all her mental strength to not scream out in pain as the Psycho for Hire has this.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Sophia, too, compares the fights of superhumans to be something out of a manga.
  • Squishy Wizard: Her Quirk gives her massive offensive power but Sophia is just as durable as any other human being. One direct hit from Luz's Spearlike Fingers and she became as good as dead.
  • Tap on the Head: Luz is able to knock out Juniper with this. Justified as she has Super-Strength.
  • The Teaser: The beginning of the chapter shamelessly reveals that Gravesfield gets wiped off of the map with thousands dead and only 15 survivors. Luz Noceda, aka All For One, becomes a Wanted Criminal and recognised Domestic Terrorist that gets blamed for it.
  • Tempting Fate: Near the beginning of the chapter, Sophia claims that Luz cannot kill her. By the end the teen girl proven her to be very wrong.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Jonah seems to have this attitude when he calls his boss to him Luz just killed Sophia and their target just got a massive Power-Up, requiring back-up.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Luz rationalises knocking out an innocent girl and stealing her clothes as needing them more but that definitely was NOT a hero's choice.
  • Torso with a View: The damage done to her by the black smog had left a sizable hole in Luz's left abdomen that fortunately heals up.
  • Villainous Friendship: Apparently Sophia is friends with Luz's cousin, Riley.
  • Villainous Rescue: Right before Sophia is about to crushed by tons of debris thrown at her by Luz, Jonah appears and saves her. She isn't too happy about it though as she wanted to fight Luz one-on-one.
  • Worthy Opponent: Sophia the hitwoman is impressed with Luz's powers and abilities enough to compliment her on it, seeing the girl as this. She compares their fight to a manga battle.
  • You Kill It, You Bought It: Not long after Luz kills Sophia, she steals her Quirk "Limitless".
