Time to bring the Yang.note

A World of Bloody Evolution is a RWBY/Warhammer 40,000 crossover fanfic by Red Rum Sprinkles.

Set presumably after the events of RWBY, Yang Xiao Long finds herself in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

The fanfic can read in FF.net, Space Battles and Sufficient Velocity.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • The Alcoholic:
    • Yang is driven to drink after Ruby dies. She gets killed for it.
    • In any scene where she's not fighting or investigating, the Lady Inquisitor is seen with a glass of wine in her hand and always carries at least one bottle of wine with her. Yang even mentions that she drinks as much as she did herself during her post-Ruby's death drunken ragers. This is probably due to the stress of being an Inquisitor.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Despite everything she knows about the Eldar, and her own pride, Yang goes to beg Garnet for help with her being a psyker.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Due to Eldar clan Tou'Her being descended from a human from Remnant and having the ability to use Aura and Semblances, they do not suffer and sense the gaze of the Chaos God Slanessh, meaning their souls will not be consumed by the Chaos God and not needing a Soul stone, which has made other Eldar dislike them.
  • Back from the Dead: Yang finds out that she had died on Remnant before ending up in the 40k universe. This is the second reason the Lady Inquisitor is so shocked to see her.
  • Badass Family: The Eldar clan Tou'Her are among the best fighters in the Eldar race and the only clan whose population is actually expanding. They are all descendants of and taught by a human from Remnant on how to use Aura and Semblances.
  • Blood Knight: Yang as per canon. Her reaction to seeing four traitor marines is to grin and challenge them all to a fight. Turned up to eleven when she falls to Chaos in Chapter 41 and, under Khorne's influence, massacre an entire Chaos Cultist stronghold by herself, enjoying it the whole time.
  • Body of Bodies: The daemon summoned composed of all the bodies of the besiegers who died attacking the wall. Notably, its eyes are composed of rotting stomachs. Everyone who sees it throws up, pisses themselves or commits suicide.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • Ruby's death did this for Team RWBY, with Yang going off into drunken ragers up until it got her killed. In the story proper, she connects with a young girl her first day in the grimdark galaxy and later finds said girl's head mounted on a Chaos Marine's spike.
    • The Lady Inquisitor got it hard too. After losing the love of her life and dying of unknown reasons in Remnant at age 61, she ended in the 40K universe, rejuvenated to a 10 years old girl, forced to go through the Schola Progenium, then having to go through soul-binding as a psyker before being inducted as an apprentice Inquisitor. By the time Yang is reunited with her, Weiss has been fighting the horrors of 40K for fifty years, which made her considerably more cold, ruthless and paranoid.
  • Break the Haughty: Dazatyhr, an arrogant Dark Eldar pirate who attacked Yang's unit, becomes an unwilling test subject of Tech Priest Prexius, an ally of the Lady Inquisitor. When Yang see him, Dazatyhr is hooked in a liquid vat and terrified of Prexius.
  • Canon Discontinuity:
    • As this fanfic was written before Volume 3 of RWBY aired, the events that lead to this fanfic are different from canon, such as Pyrrha's death happening several years later than in the series, and Yang not losing her right arm to Adam.
    • Additionally, the author began the story back in 2014, back before the Gathering Storm event progressed the storyline of the 40k universe. The author has stated that they're not following newer canon if it interferes with the story they're telling
  • The Cavalry: The Sisters of Battle arrive just as the Guard have been order to retreat from Shao-La.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Shao-la's king is only thirteen years old and already leading his people from the front. His first scene shows him bed-ridden after being injured in battle against enemy heretics.
  • Clarke's Third Law: Ohma even quotes the very line in regards to what she can do, such as being able to have a psychic conversation with Weiss despite being a machine. And it isn't an exaggeration: compared to her, other STCs look like the early Mechanicus.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: As befitting of an inquisitor, the Lady Inquisitor is a master of it. It's seen firsthand in chapter 24 when she tortures to death one of Josephus' elite guards to extract information from his rubric-protected mind.
  • Cold Sniper: Amat, The Lady Inquisitor's Vindicare Assassin. Despite being rather emotionless, he's actually awe inspired by Yang's supposed purity and is convinced that she will never fall to Chaos. Unfortunately, he's proven (temporarily) wrong.
  • Cool Sword: The Lady Inquisitor gives Yang a power sword as a sign of her favor.
    • And, as of Chapter 45, Weiss has Myrtenaster, again. And it has a few improvements, to boot.
  • Crapsack World: As expected of the 40k universe. Yang is not only disgusted of the wars and bloodshed but humanity's racism and zealotry.
  • Culture Clash:
    • While Yang has managed to acclimate to the Woadian regiment rather well, she's still put off about the extreme xenophobia. She's learned not to voice that out loud, though.
    • Chera, one of the Lady Inquisitor's Elite Mooks, finds it hard to believe that the world of Remnant where Weiss and Yang are from can be located in a Chaos-free universe and strong and peaceful despite not worshipping the God-Emperor.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Yang regularly dishes these out to any enemy who doesn't have Aura (which translates to almost everyone in the galaxy), but finds herself on the receiving end courtesy of a Rubric Marine.
  • Cyborg: As of Chapter 46, some of Yang's innards end up being replaced with bionics.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget: What Khorne promises to Yang after Ros is kidnapped by the Dark Eldars. Notable in that it works.
  • Eviler than Thou: Yang realizes that Weiss' time in the 40k universe has made her much worse than Cinder, and what she hates the most about this is that Weiss' actions were justified and necessary.
  • The Extremist Was Right: Yang sadly accepts that no matter how cruel or extreme Weiss' decisions were, it was the right choice and not doing so would lead to something much worse.
  • Face–Heel Turn: The boy king of Shao-la started as a good ruler before a Chaos sniper infected him with a wound that turned him to Chaos.
  • Fantastic Racism: While the Tou'Her clan are respected by their fellow Eldars, some Eldars don't like them due to being descendants of a male Eldar and a female Human. Specifically, a female human from Remnant. The fact only the Tou'Her clan can use Aura and Semblances doesn't help.
  • Feed It with Fire: The four traitor marines attempt to fight Yang with flamers. As per RWBY canon, it just makes her stronger.
Yang: Wow you guys are dumb. Look at this, my hair literally spouts fire and you think more is going to help you?
  • Foreshadowing: Early chapters gave several clues of The Lady Inquisitor's identity.
  • Fountain of Youth: Experienced by The Lady Inquisitor when she went from Remnant to the 40k verse. She was 61 before arriving and 10 when she woke up on Tanith Nova.
  • Gorgeous Gorgon: Magos Ada Prexius. A stunning beauty of the Raven Hair Ivory Skin-type, with needle hands and mecha-centipede legs. Yang's narration has rather nice things to say about her until she sees the Red Right Hand that comes part and parcel with being of the Adeptus Mechanicus.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The Eldar clan Tou'Her are all descendants from a traveler from Remnant.
  • Happily Married:
    • Ros was this before she got drafted. She still thinks about him often.
    • Blake married Sage after Yang died. Weiss says they were very happy and had three grandchildren. Pyrrha and Jaune as well.
    • Darron and Chera, two members of The Lady Inquisitor's Kasrkin.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The Boy King of Shao-la's uncle, the Regent of Shao-la, first resented his nephew for being chosen as king instead of him and ploted to assassinate him, but after the Boy King escaped several assassinations attempt, he came to the conclusion that his nephew was sent by the God-Emperor and decided to loyally serves him, looking at his past actions with shame. He's the one that discovered that the Boy King was possessed by Chaos and hid his journal with incriminating evidence for the Lady Inquisitor to find before the now corrupted Boy King had him executed for treason.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • The native guard of Shao-La, despite going up against forces that outnumber and out-tech them, hold the gate long enough for the Imperial Guard to reform. They do so with pride and a song on their lips.
Captain: “What a hideous way to die.” He marched away, donning his brass helmet. “What a glorious way to die.”
    • Ira, Weiss' acolyte, sacrifices his own life to protect Weiss from a Culexus assassin.
  • Hide Your Otherness: Knowing that the Cult Mechanicus will sooner declare her Heretek and destroy her then actually accept her, Ohma decides to disguise her moblie terminal body as a false aspirant under Magos Tyrham to let her explore the galaxy and learn all she can about the Imperium, so that when she returns to her main body she will better know how to help Humanity. She choses the name Artisan Inferiosa Ohma Polendina.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Japheth-Series-Zero-One-Omega, also know as Ohma, the final Standard Template Construct. She is an AI with the knowledge of all technology from the Dark Age of Technology that was created to combat the Men of Iron. And she won.
  • Identical Stranger: Ohma's terminal avatar looks incredibly like Penny Polendina, right down to her orange hair, bright green eyes, and freckled face on impossibly realistic synthskin. Ohma herself states that, though she has no evidence of Penny being involved in her construction, seeing the resemblance to Penny in Weiss' memories and the pattern of Humans from Remnant ending up in the 40K universe, she doesn't dismiss the probability.
  • Insistent Terminology: The Tou'Her clan differentiate between Mon'Keigh (humans from the Imperium) and Humans (other humans). More specifically, humans from Remnant, that they view the latter as infinitely better and are proud descendants of one.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Weiss knowingly and subtly manipulates Yang into and argument then claims it's them being tempted by Chaos in order to reaffirm Yang's loyalty after Weiss nearly destroys Shao'La.
  • Mind Rape: The Lady Inquisitor's specialty. She's so good at it, she can get into another Inquisitor's head without him noticing. Yang takes one look at a Commissar that she had beaten who doesn't react to her in anyway and immediately recognizes it as the Inquisitor's work.
  • More Dakka:
    • Towards the end of the battle at Elodia IX, where she's just killed the Ork Nob, Yang yanks a heavy bolter off of a recently-wrecked Leman Russ and lets loose on the other orks with it.
    • The daemon summoned on Shao-La is killed by a combination of every tank, most of the Imperial Guard and a Valkyrie shooting it at the same time.
  • Necessarily Evil:
    • Ros' reporting of Yang to The Lady Inquisitor. They're friends, but letting an unknowing and unprepared psyker — which we learn Yang actually is just waltz around like that is just asking the Warp to eat you and the planet you're on.
    • Aura users are rather sensitive to the Warp, shown as Yang feels it hard when Chaos arrives or when she experiences Warp travel, so the Lady Inquisitor orders a Vindicaire Assassin to keep an eye on Yang and kill her if she ever falls to Chaos. This, despite her being overjoyed at seeing her friend.
    • Weiss views her experiments of unlocking Aura on Imperial citizens as this. None of the dozens she tried it on survived, but she needed to be sure.
  • No-Sell: One traitor marine tries to light Yang on fire with a flamethrower. Considering Yang had already lit herself on fire, this does absolutely nothing.
  • Odd Friendship: Yang, the thrill-seeking Blood Knight, and Amat, the stoic Vindicare Assassin. Even when he explains that his purpose is to kill her should she fall to Chaos, she's surprisingly chill about the whole thing and proceeds to interact with him. Indeed, they become closer after he actually shoots her due to her nearly going over due to the Dark Eldar attack, particularly when she starts sharing her food after finding out that he's never eaten anything other than protein gel his whole life. She eventually confesses feelings for him and they become a couple.
  • One Woman Army:
    • Thanks to her Aura, Yang can tear through Chaos cultists, Ork Boyz and such with ease. Chaos Marines and Ork Nobz are tougher, but she manages.
    • The Lady Inquisitor is one too: a Beta-level psyker and master swordswoman, she can take groups of fifty Chaos Cultists by herself without breaking a sweat and tear apart tanks with her telekinesis. This is due to her Aura and Semblance monstrously boosting her psychic powers, as well as being themselves boosted by her connection to the Warp.
    • The Eldar clan Tou'Her are a family of One-Man Army. Each has full control of their Aura and most know how to use their Semblances. One of them died after killing an entire horde of Orks singlehandedly.
  • Our Demons Are Different: The cultists manage to summon a 60 foot tall one made of the bodies of those who had died assaulting the walls of Shao-la.
  • Our Founder: The Recongrators faction of the Inquisition has such a statue buried deep within its headquarters. It depicts the Clockwork Inquisitor, a.k.a. Headmaster Ozpin.
  • Patron Saint: During her battle with Josephus on White Horses, Yang reaches out to the Emperor and is granted Sainthood by him, allowing her to kill Josephus and is venerated as a Living Saint by the Imperial forces on the planet. She also gains wings made of warpflame and the ability to breathe fire.
  • The Promise: Yang promises to keep Ros alive long enough to reunite with her husband. This is main reason that Ros doesn't shoot Yang when Ros suspects her to be a Psyker.
  • Punch! Punch! Punch! Uh Oh...: During an assault boarding of a Chaos-controlled frigate, Yang impales a Rubric Marine with her Power Sword. It replies by unleashing a Curb-Stomp Battle on her.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Vadiik, the retired Imperial Guard Sergeant turner Police Officer from Woadia. While she was impatient with Yang at the start, owing to her filling in as an Administratum drone, she warms up to Yang after the Chaos raid, gives her a basic rundown of the verse after realizing that she never heard about the Imperium (instead of shooting her as a heretic) and points her to the recruitment office when she expresses interest in signing up.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Yang is suspected of being a Psyker by some due to her powers when in reality it's due to her Aura.
    • Although it turns out the she is a psyker on top of being an Aura user, the same as the Lady Inquisitor.
  • Rousing Speech: Ros gives one before the first battle the Imperial Guard participates. While Yang is impressed she managed to boost the morale of the regiment, she is disturbed at how xenophobic it is.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: The boy-king of Shao-la. It helps that Redrum Sprinkles designed him as an anti-Joffrey. Fighting leads him to be corrupted by Chaos.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Rhain dies in the first planet campaign, Jala Prime, in Weiss' campaign.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Sergeant Jorvis dies during a Dark Eldar attack during the third planet, Uriel, in Weiss' campaign.
  • Sergeant Rock: Jorvis of Gamma platoon has been a sergeant for 50 years and has repeatedly turned down promotions.
  • Shadow Walker: The title of chapter 33 and Maion's Semblance.
  • Single-Target Sexuality:
    • By word of God, Weiss is Rosesexual.
    • Then this becomes subverted when Weiss meets Ohma, who is so impossibly beautiful that Weiss can't help but be entranced by her and mentally noted how soft she is, her generous hips, heaving breasts covered by Godiva Hair, her long legs, and constantly getting caught in her eyes.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Maion strongly resembles her grandmother Pyrrha to the point that Yang mistakes Maion for her grandmother.
  • Team Mom: Yang happily reassures her comrade's fears and promises to keep as many as possible alive as she can. Especially Ros.
  • This Means Warpaint: The Woadians paint their faces and armor with blue paint.
  • Unfriendly Fire: One commissar was unfortunately hit by an "enemy sniper" after he mistook a tactical retreat for cowardice.
  • Unstoppable Rage:
    • Yang goes through this when she sees that a Chaos Marine has mounted a little girl's head on a spike. She kills him with nothing but her fists.
    • The Lady Inquisitor got through this when She figures out that the Forces of Chaos know about Ruby and use it against her. She kills several people from the pure psychic rage.
    • Yang goes through a terrifying one when Ros is captured by the Dark Eldars.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 10:Yang is betrayed by her friend Ros who accuses her of being a Psyker. To clear her name, Yang surrenders herself to The Lady Inquisitor, who turns out to be none other than Weiss Schnee!
    • Chapter 11:Yang learns that she died on Remnant before ending up in the 40k universe, and that Weiss too died before ending in the same universe, so following that logic, it's possible that Ruby too is somewhere in the 40k universe.
    • Chapter 16:A female Eldar named Maion blocks an enemy knife using Aura, indicating that their are other Remnant inhabitants in the universe.
    • Chapter 25:Weiss learns that the Forces of Chaos know of Ruby and use it against her to send her into a rage.
    • Chapter 37:While Weiss, Yang and their army fight the Chaos forces on the planet Uriel, Dark Eldar pirates arrive on the planet on a mission to capture Weiss.
    • Chapters 40 and 41 are one big Wham Episode after the other: the Dark Eldars attack the Woadians' camp to try to kidnap Weiss, killing several characters (notably Sergeant Veteran Jorvis) and abducting several others, among them Ros, which sends Yang completely over the edge and fall to Chaos, then spending an entire chapter massacring absolutely everyone in the Chaos Cultists' base, before being finally stopped by Amat's shot, leaving her fatally wounded.
    • Chapter 51:Weiss is promoted Inquisitor Lord, and learns from her master that the Recongrators, the Inquisition faction they belong to, was not actually founded by four idealist Inquisitors but one man, which to Weiss's shock was none other than Ozpin.
    • Chapter 55: The Chariot of Salvation Josephus is searching for is an intact Standard Template Construct capable of building Capital warships of such advanced technolgy than anything the Imperium currently has or has knowledge about from the Dark Age of Technology. Additionally, the fate of the galaxy is tied to Yang, and she needs go to the Black Library.
    • Chapter 67: Yang, Amat, Weiss's Kasrkin bodyguards and their Eldar allies finally reach the Black Library and an attempt is made on Weiss by a Culexus assassin who is killed by the sacrifice of several Sisters of Battle and Weiss's apprentice Ira.
    • Chapter 73: Just as Yang and her allies are about to leave the Black Library with Pyrrha and her Eldar husband along with the location of Chariot of Salvation, Ahriman finally discovers the Black Library.
    • Chapter 88: During the final battle against Josephus, Yang becomes a Living Saint.
    • Chapter 90 and 92: The Chariot is finally found, and Weiss discovers that it isn't a Capital ship-building STC; It's an Artificial Intelligence created to combat the Men of Iron. Furthermore, it turns out that it is also an STC, but is far better than a fully intact STC: it is the final Standard Template Construct, created at the end of the Men of Iron uprising, with millennia more technological development than the other earlier, "primitive" STCs, in addition to technology invented during the War against the Men of Iron. And it is capable of manifesting any of these technology.
  • Walking Spoiler:
    • The Lady Inquisitor's identity is a major twist with several implications about how the worlds of Warhammer and Remnant are connected.
    • The Traveler, also known as the Soul Wielder, and her connection to the Eldar clan Tou'Her shows that there are other people from Remnant in the galaxy and not all of them met the Imperium. Chapter 54 reveals her identity to be Pyrrha
  • What the Hell Are You?: The traitor marines ask this of Yang after she no sells multiple bolter rounds and a heavy flamer.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • In the canon omake Weiss does this to the Emperor about simply playing defensively while the Imperium goes to hell. The Emperor charges her to fix it.
    • Yang gets into a massive argument with the Lady Inquisitor about her wanting to abandon Shao-La. It quickly devolves into an argument about Ruby.
    • Done by a Chaos Cultist to Yang of all people when under the influence of Khorne she massacred an entire cultist stronghold, using Chaotic powers.
  • White Mask of Doom: Members of The Lady Inquisitor's Kasrkin all have these. Weiss modeled them after Remnant's Grimm.
  • World Half Full: The Lady Inquisitor still sees the 40k verse as this, despite having spent over half a century as an Inquisitor: she has dedicated herself to filling it back up.
