    Jake Hawkfield

Jake joined the SWAT in 2011. In September 2013, he is called into dealing with a hostage takers occupying a hospital. After the Prologue, he is sent to the ARC Detention Facility to be detained because of the events of the Prologue.

  • Badass Normal: Invisible soldiers capable of surviving three shotgun blasts at point blank range barely slow him down. He might not be entirely normal though...
  • Cold Sniper: The second thing you do in the game is snipe some terrorists on the roof of a hospital.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Jake is a seemingly normal human being, yet he can crush a man's skull with a single well timed kick.
  • Happily Married: Was this before the start of the game.
  • Heroic Mime
  • Made of Iron: Somehow survives getting shot in the head with a sniper rifle at the end of chapter 1.
  • One-Man Army: Manages to kill dozens, if not hundreds of PMC's in the prologue alone, not to mention hordes of zombies and another small army of soldiers during Chapter 1. Lampshaded by Bryan after Jake fights off zombies on his own while rebooting the MGPS:
Bryan: Wow, you took care of all these motherfuckers? By yourself? Jesus, man!
  • The Voiceless: Jake never speaks a word throughout the game. The closest we ever get to hearing him talk is when he texts a surviving scientist while accessing the mainframe.

    Jake's Wife
Jake's late wife, who died in an apparent suicide a week before the events of Underhell. Her ghost now appears to haunt the House.

     Frank Greene

Jake's friend, boss in SWAT, and father figure.

     Danko

One of Ito's lieutenants. He is fought and killed by Jake near the end of the Prologue.

  • Flunky Boss: Danko brings 8 Mooks to kill Jake.
  • Mook Lieutenant: Danko is as tough as a regular Mook.
  • Mook Promotion: He is one of Ito's Lieutenants, but he is otherwise as strong as a mook.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Danko is killed seconds after his introduction. He does manage to say one line of dialogue:
Danko: There's a raid coming through! Stay down!

     Marcus

Yet another of Ito's lieutenants.

    Royce

  • You Do NOT Want To Know: He says this to a police officer when detaining Jake at the end of the Prologue.
Royce: I have my orders. We'll take him with us.
Police Officer: The hell you will! This is our jurisdiction. Who the hell do you think you are?
Royce: You don't wanna know. Take him away.

    Masahiro Ito

A mysterious individual who appears to be behind the two secret facilities Jake ends up in. Aside from this, little else is known about him.

  • Big Bad
  • Hero Killer: His initial attack on the survivors kills all the redshirts. His second attack on Level 5 kills Eric and Matthew.

    Michael

A mysterious figure who interviews and hypnotizes Jake after the Prologue and Chapter One.

    Quentin Pierce (The Warden)

The Warden of the prison Jake is sent to at the beginning of Chapter One.

  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He has a picture of his daughter on his desk. The same picture is later found in a pool of blood in the West Block.
  • Expy: Of Dr. Breen. The Warden has a similar character model to Breen, and he doesn't have as much power over the ARC as the player is led to believe.
  • In-Series Nickname: Bryan mentions it is the "Grim Reaper."
  • Never Found the Body
  • Minion with an F in Evil: He is polite to Jake, and prefers to think of himself as a host and Jake as a guest. He says that Jake will be locked up for a long time, and tells him to try to not think about it.
  • Rambling Old Man Monologue: He is known for these. When Jake meets him, he only speaks for a minute because of something Bryan told him.
Mook: Whoa, that was fast. What did you do?
Bryan: Shh, it's a secret. Open up.

    Victor

The Prison's cook. He used to work in the same wing as his brother, Igor, until their constant fighting led to Ito putting Igor into a coma.

  • Ax-Crazy
  • BFS: He wields one in the second appearance.
  • Foreshadowing: His first appearance has some of this.
Victor: One day, this place is going down to hell. And the day that happens, Igor and I will slice you all to bits!
    * Husky Russkie
  • Not Enough to Bury: He is killed when he falls into a large meat grinder.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: To kill him, you have to lure him into breaking the support beams holding up the catwalk he is standing on
  • The Quiet One: He became this after Ito bashed Igor's skull and put him into a coma.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: He says this to Jake and Bryan when he mentions his dislike for his 20-year contract.
Victor: You'll pay for this. You'll all pay for this!
    * We Will Meet Again: He says this to Jake in his first appearance.
Victor: It's you... we will meet again.

    Igor

Victor's brother. After having his skull shattered by Ito, he now has a metal plate in his skull.

    Hector

One of Terry's group of security guards.

    Malcolm

A lone security guard in contact with Terry's group of survivors.

    Bryan Johnson

A new security guard at the prison who is relatively friendly to Jake. He becomes part of Terry's group of survivors after the Infection hits.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Does not like fighting alongside Junior for this reason. According to him, his concern for his brother distracts him.
  • Ranger: He says he was one.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Bryan has by far the dirtiest mouth of all of the security guards.
  • Those Two Guys: With Junior.

    Alex "Junior" Johnson

Bryan's younger brother. Just like his big brother, he is a security guard, former Ranger, and part of Terry's group.

    Matthew Porter

Another security guard in Terry's group. Before the infection, he oversaw the laundry at the prison.

  • Almighty Janitor: Before the ARC incident, he handled the laundry. He is found to be very intelligent and to be working for a secret organization.
  • The Stoic: Played straight until he smiles when he dies.

    Terrance "Terry" Mason

Chief of Security of the complex of Chapter One. As the most experienced guard, he serves as the de facto leader of the group. He was also part of the first ARC facility before Ito ordered it purged.

    Ben

One of Terry's group of security guards. He is very good with computers, and uses his skills to run surveillance for the group and gather intel on the facility.

  • Hollywood Hacking: Subverted. Ito let him in.
  • The Smart Guy
  • Motor Mouth: Played straight. Lampshaded by Bryan when Bryan and Matthew are looking for the MGPS:
Ben: Okay right, keep going on to your right, it should be the door right before the end on the opposite side of the corridor, you get me right? On the opposite side where you just came in at the end.
Bryan: The...other...end...opposite...I don't get it, man.

    Takeo K./Raito

A very quiet guard in Terry's group. As it turns out, he and Ito have a history.

    The Hermit

A questionably-sane old man who lives in the vents of the ARC complex in Chapter One. In exchange for his keeping the vents clean and well-maintained, the guards tolerate him occasionally sneaking out to swipe supplies for himself.

  • Big Damn Heroes: He saves Jake at least twice. Once when he hides Jake from the ARC soldiers after he passes out in the residential area and again when Ito traps him in a gas chamber
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Oh so very much.
  • Companion Cube: His stuffed turtle, "Turty"
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It's easy to miss, but one of the bulletin boards in his hideout near the end of the game is covered with newspaper clippings showing he lost his entire family in a fire
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He changed radios into makeshift mines which attract unsuspecting enemies.
  • The Hermit: Of the friendly kind.

     Angelo

A man hired by a mysterious benefactor to spy on Jake and his wife. At some point before the events of Underhell, he is shot, burned and dumped into the well behind the House, but somehow survives. By the time Jake finds him, he is reduced to a walking, insane corpse
