Blue Foxes

Soldiers

Melee units that wield a variety of different weapons and have different playstyles. As a frontline unit, they're generally taking damage up close and preventing other allies from taking damage.
    In General
  • Draw Aggro: Many Soldier abilities inflict Provoke on the enemy, which cause them to target the unit that inflicted the status effect and attack them.
  • Shield Bash: Sword and Shield users have Shield Bash early on, which hits a target to stun them. The skill itself is used to highlight the importance of interrupting the enemy to prevent them from unleashing devastating attacks.
  • Storm of Blades: The strongest skill for Sword and Shield users, Phantom Sword, sends out multiple ghostly blades at the target area to deal major damage and lower attack damage from the enemy.
    Andrias "Rias" Rhondarson

Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese), Toby Regbo (English)

Weapon: Daggers

A calm, cool, and resourceful leader. As a child, he was a chamberlain and bodyguard to the late Levantia Shaytham. When Levantia was assassinated, he flees with his friend Fredret to Central Field and lived under the care of Zoruaq, who taught them both to become mercenaries. As one of the heads of the Blue Foxes, He's knowledgeable about strategy and tactics and in particular, is quite skilled in the art of subterfuge.

  • Benevolent Boss: As the primary character that the player controls, he interacts with all other characters for side quests and is generally shown to treat his fellow Blue Foxes fairly, whether it be to dealing with assassins hunting them down, helping to defend their friends and families from impending attacks, or even just turn a blind-eye to certain unsavory activities of the less honest mercenaries.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: As a child, he watched Zevatian Schugel, the general of the Empire, mercilessly slaughter his family in front of his eyes and was then abducted by him to be trained in combat due to his natural magical talent. Andrias has never forgotten this and has wanted revenge on Zevatian ever since. Zevitian, despite having recruited him as a secret agent, doesn't remember this because he had abducted over a hundred children over several years.
  • Devious Daggers: His weapon of choice is the dagger and his specialties include subterfuge and covertly gathering information.
  • Double Reverse Quadruple Agent: He is secretly an agent of the Empire all along. However, his number one desire in life is to take revenge on Zevatian, the man who killed his parents (and had him trained to become an agent of the Empire). He genuinely did plan to defect to Alletain upon meeting Levantia, but after Levantia's death, he essentially reverted his loyalties back to the Empire and simply pretended to be an ally of Alletain. After taking his revenge on Zevatian, he assassinates Fredret and allows the Empire to roll in to take over. He is last seen wearing an Empire general outfit, just like what Zevatian wore.
  • Evil All Along: Andrias is actually a secret agent working to undermine the Alletainian Government and make it easier for the Empire to take control of the region and gain access to its Jade.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Rias has easily one of the highest damage outputs in the game while being able to tank hits on the frontline. He also has no lack of speed, owing to his quick cooldowns and abilities that refresh his cooldowns instantly if he kills enemies with them.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Despite being a Soldier-type, he doesn't have any protective abilities and instead, plays more like an assassin who quickly puts out damage and kills enemies at alarming speed.
  • Morality Chain: Andrias himself states that when he first came in contact with Levantia, he made his primary goal to give power to those who would do right with it. After seeing Levantia killed, and Fredret do poorly as the new king of Alletain however, he decides to take matters into his own hand to try and achieve peace in his own way.
  • The Mole: At the end of the game, it's revealed that he was actually a secret agent working for the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire the whole time.
  • The Sneaky Guy: He has ears at nearly every corner owing to his network of scouts and informants and as a result, almost nothing gets past his ears. As it turns out, he's been a secret agent working with the Empire as a child, and no one suspects him of this.
    Izelair "Izzy" Wigan

Voiced by: Kaori Maeda (Japanese), Sabrina Bartlett (English)

Weapon: Sword and Shield

A young female mercenary who trained and traveled with her childhood friends Andrias and Fredret. She's the daughter legendary mercenary Zoruaq Wigan and in general is always looking to prove herself.

  • Challenge Seeker: She's always looking for a challenge to prove to herself that she's just as good a mercenary as her father and her friends, Andrias and Fredret.
  • Last Chance Hit Point: Her Rank 5 Ability, Knight's Wisdom, allows her or any unit she's assigned to to survive an attack that would reduce their HP to 0 once per mission.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being a major part of Andrias and Fredret's group when they are recruited into the unit by Lorraine, she doesn't become a joint leader when the unit becomes the Blue Foxes, with instead, Waltaquin taking on that role. While she still participates in some dialog, she's never elevated beyond just being a friend to Andrias and Fredret.
  • Supreme Chef: Her cooking is highly well-regarded by Andrias and Fredret when they were traveling together. In the Blue Foxes, she's requested to help improve the cooking menu to improve morale among the unit.
    Donovar Sullion

Voiced by: Kazumasa Nakamura (Japanese), Alec Newman (English)

Weapon: Axe

  • Critical Status Buff: He has multiple skills and abilities that increase the damage he deals based on how low his health is.
  • Life Drain: His primary niche as the only Axe user. Some of his skills restore health based on damage dealt and number of enemies hit, and his abilities further increase how much health he receives from the damage he deals while also increasing his damage based on how much life drain he does.
  • Optional Party Member: He's an optional party member, recruitable in Chapter 2.
  • Precision-Guided Boomerang: One of his skills, literally called Boomerang Axe, sends out his axe to be thrown like a boomerang in a wide circle, dealing damage to enemies along the way and healing Donovar based on each enemy hit.
  • Retired Badass: Was a decorated member of the royal guard before retiring to lead a more humble life as the head of a defense force for his local community. He comes out of retirement after being saved by the Blue Foxes during a mission that would've otherwise been fatal for him.
    Catherine

Voiced by: Lynn (Japanese), Anna Burnett (English)

Weapon: Sword and Shield

  • Belief Makes You Stupid: All she's known her whole life are the teachings of the Granvell Church and this nearly got her killed when she blindly followed their teachings. Part of her character development after she joins the Blue Foxes is reconciling what she's known in the past and learning to move forward with believing what she sees with her own eyes.
  • Friend to All Children: In her spare time, she'd often donate food to local children in need and continues to do so even after defecting from the Granvell Church.
  • Knight Templar: She's a member of the Templar Knights who work for the Granvell Church and believes that she's working for the good of the people. She doesn't realize until she's rescued by the Blue Foxes that they're a corrupt organization.
  • No Full Name Given: Her full name is never given and she only goes by her first name, Catherine.
  • The Paladin: Her abilities include a few options to improve any healing she does. While her weapon-type does not have any healing skills, she can be paired in a unit with a Magicker who does, making her unique as a Soldier-type in this regard.

Cavelier

Melee units that ride on horses and wyverns. They're the fastest type of unit and have abilities that focus on crowd control, typically disrupting enemy units and moving them into more favorable positions.
    In General
  • Dragon Rider: Chappleman and Zoruaq ride wyverns instead of horses and as a result, their weapons consist of equippable claws that the wyverns use instead of lances.
  • Lightning Bruiser: They're the fastest type of unit but are also capable of dealing and receiving damage just as well.
  • Mounted Combat: Their fast speed is owed to them riding on horses and wyverns.
  • Tornado Move: The Wyvern Riders' ultimate skill creates a cyclone that deals heavy damage to the target enemy moves around afterward to deal additional damage to any enemy in its path.
    Fredret "Fred" Lester

Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe (Japanese), Jonny Davies (English)

Weapon: Lances

As a child, he was a friend to Rias and the late Levantia Shaytham. When Levantia was assassinated, he flees with Rias to Central Field and lived under the care of Zoruaq, who taught them both to become mercenaries. As one of the heads of the Blue Foxes, He's got an outgoing, kind demeanor and superior physical strength, though he can be naïve.

  • Dead Person Impersonation: By carving an imitation of the Mark of the Blessed into his hand, he's able to convince everyone that he's Levantia Shaytham, who everyone thought was assassinated years ago. After running out the Empire in Chapter 6, he ascends the throne.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: The last scene of the game before the credits roll is of Andrias, his most trusted friend, shooting him dead before the screen goes black.
  • The Lancer: Has been Rias's friend since they were children and they trust and care for each other like brothers. He generally goes along with Rias's plans without hesitation though they sometimes have their arguments.
  • The Promise: He made a promise to Levantia as he was on his last breath to bring peace for the future and this is his primary motivation that keeps him fighting.
  • Secret Identity: Towards the final act of the game, he reveals to the Blue Foxes that he is actually Levantia Shaytham, having taking up the name of his friend Fredret to hide his identity, and he shows the Mark of the Blessed on his hand as proof. The mark allows him to ascend to the throne after the other Shaytham brothers are killed. However, it's revealed that this was actually a lie that he had come up with as a way to fulfill the real Levantia's dying wish.
    Castevere Bunnow
Weapon: Lances

  • Chivalrous Pervert: Has an interest in beautiful women, though he's still generally an upstanding guy. One of his abilities is to increase his stats by 20 when paired in a unit with a female character.
    Chappleman
Weapon: Claws

  • Apologetic Attacker: If he gets a kill, he apologizes to his victims whether they're soldiers, beasts, or undead.
"I'm sorry. It had to be done."
  • Badass Preacher: Chappleman is a preacher of Naythal who fights against monsters and soldiers.
  • Optional Party Member: He's an optional party member, recruitable in Chapter 6.
    Zoruaq Wigan
Weapon: Claws

  • Back in the Saddle: Figuratively and literally. He's able to join the Blue Foxes as a wyvern rider and shows he can still fight despite his age.
  • Dragon Rider: He's the first wyvern rider you can recruit provided you complete his subquest.
  • Old Soldier: He's the oldest member of the playable cast and has fought in wars before giving birth to his daughter, Izy.
  • Optional Party Member: He's an optional party member, recruitable in Chapter 4.

Sharpshooters

Ranged units that wield bows and firearms to deal damage. They have multiple ways too deal damage to groups of enemies and are particularly adept at applying status effects to hinder the enemy.
    In General
  • Long-Range Fighter: The primary advantage of the Sharpshooter is being able to inflict damage from a safe distance.
  • Pinball Projectile: One of the skills of the firearm weapons is a bullet that ricochets between nearby enemies to inflict damage.
  • Rain of Arrows: One of the skills of the bow weapons is to fire a rain of arrows in a circle at a group of enemies, which deals damage and also slows down their actions.
  • Status Effects: More so than other classes, Sharpshooters have a knack for stacking multiple status effects on enemy targets, making them significantly weaker.
  • Status Infliction Attack: Many skills in the game inflict status effects but Firearm users have Chaos Cluster, which inflicts one of four different status effects and also has a chance to inflict each of the other three.
  • Trap Master: The bow skill "Trap Caster" sets a tripwire trap on the field that explodes when enemies get in contact and increases in damage the longer its out. It's a particularly strong tool when flanked as it lets the party soften one side of the flank before they arrive.

    Iscarion "Isca" Colchester

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (Japanese), Jacob Collins-Levy (English)

Weapon: Bows
A self proclaimed knight errant whose primary goal is to help the weak. He joins the unit that Andrias and Fredret are a part of after working together with them on a mission and is installed as one of the heads shortly after.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: In Chapter 4, after completing "Survey for Jade," you take control of Iscarion at the Blue Fox Headquarters since Andrias and Waltaquin are out in the Frontier.
  • Knight Errant: Outright describes himself as such, being a knight who left his post and drifted around helping those in need. When he first works with Rias and Fred, he comes to realize that he'd be able to achieve peace more easily with them than if he were working alone and joins their unit.
  • Master Archer: He's an exceptional archer known for his sniper accuracy.
  • Nice Guy: Upon first joining the Blue Foxes, an older mercenary confronts Andrias because Iscarion has been kind and supportive to the unit despite being strangers...and being the nicest one there was what the older mercenary used to be known for. He then adds that he tried confronting Iscarion about this issue directly, but Iscarion responded to his jealousy by being as supportive of the older mercenary's own talents as possible, making him feel like a victim of Politeness Judo.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: While he's on friendly terms with the other Blue Fox heads to start with, tensions between the heads grow as they begin to learn things about each other that makes them begin to resent each other. Once Fredret reveals himself to be the late Levantia Shaytham and Iscarion finds Andrias's general ruthlessness in carrying out his goals too appalling, he begins to seriously question what he's even doing working with the Blue Foxes as they no longer seem to be working towards the sort of goal he can believe in. He officially resigns after Fredret is sworn in as king.
  • Uncertain Doom: After leaving the Blue Foxes in Chapter 6, he's never seen or heard from again, though his updated biography in the documents list suggests that he may have possibly been murdered by a thief.
  • We Help the Helpless: His ultimate goal in helping to form the Blue Foxes and what lead to him becoming a knight errant in the first place is to help the weak when they can't help themselves and works tirelessly towards achieving that goal.

    Rickenback "Rickles" Madea

Voiced by: Wakana Maruoka (Japanese), Emma Ballantine (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/show_13.png
Weapon: Bows

  • The Apprentice: She takes archery advice from Iscarion, who notes that she has a lot of potential.
  • Country Mouse: Considers herself a "country bumpkin" and when first invited to join the Blue Foxes, notes how she's still getting used to life away from her rural home.
  • Item Amplifier: One of her primary abilities to distinguish her from other Sharpshooters is to increase the potency of items used on the party, making healing items used by her more effective.
  • The Pollyanna: She's one of the most optimistic characters in the game despite the war and political turmoil going on around DioField.
  • Raised by the Community: Her parents were killed at a young age, so her village banded together to raise her.

    Umarida Bareas
Weapon: Firearms

  • Emotionless Girl: She doesn't display much emotion, which can make her difficult to work with. A later update to her description in the library outright says that she's "emotionally defective, experiencing little joy or sadness, and refusing to connect with others".
  • The Mole: At the end of the game, it's revealed that she was actually a secret agent working for the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire, along with Andrias.
  • No Social Skills: While she's a competent mercenary, she doesn't communicate properly with others which causes some problems to her initial job assignments when first enlisting into the Blue Foxes. Andrias takes note and rather than punish her, reassigns her to duties that she can better excel at.

    Tremina Umbert
Weapon: Firearms

  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Her signature ability allows her bullets to pierce through enemies, letting them hit multiple targets that are bunched together or in a straight line.

Magickers

Ranged units that wield wands and staves to use magic to support their allies. They primarily provide healing and buffs to allies.
    In General
    Waltaquin "Quin" Redditch

Voiced by: Inori Minase (Japanese), Sorcha Groundsell (English)

Weapon: Staves
A daughter from a prestigious house who has a strong interest and skill in magic. She first comes into contact with Rias, Fred, and Isca for a request from her family but soon finds them all murdered due to a conflict between local noble factions. She decides to stick around with their unit as she finds them interesting, and later joins them as a head of the Blue Foxes.
  • Beyond Redemption: Against orders, she gleefully kills some civilians trying to start an uprising, which has everyone, including Rias who's normally sympathetic towards her, looking at her with disgust. Though her actions go largely unpunished, she isn't looked at in quite the same light from that point on.
  • Blood Knight: Of the Blue Fox heads, she's the most excited about engaging in battle and partaking in the carnage that ensues, leaving others quite disturbed by her behavior.
  • The Gadfly: She enjoys teasing Rias in their interactions together to try and get a rise out of him.
  • Mystical White Hair: She a magic user with long, flowing white hair. It turns out later in the game that she's also a master necromancer who's able to command undead soldiers.
  • Necromancer: To everyone's horror, the Blue Foxes learn that she's able to raise the undead to assist her in battle, being able to control even a Skeletal Dragon.
  • The Sociopath: While she's a strong combatant, it's clear early on that she's an unhinged, self-serving sort. She displays no grief upon hearing that her entire family was murdered and stays with the Blue Foxes because she finds them an interesting enough bunch to keep her amused. She'll skip out on war meetings to focus on her experiments and absolutely detests missions she finds boring, like defeating a couple of weak monsters compared to taking on the Empire. Outside of the Blue Foxes, her good looks and inherent charisma allow her to keep a list of connections that she uses regularly to her advantage.
  • Uncertain Doom: She's supposedly killed by Rias after she defects from their group to join the Archbishop's faction, however, her body is never found and she tells Rias just before she falls to her apparent death that they'll see each other again soon.
    Shivat Malzin

Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa (Japanese), Ronan Summers (English)

Weapon: Wands

    Estalt Yewfare
Weapon: Staves
    Hezeliah Shaytham - Unmarked Spoilers!
Weapon: Wands

The princess of Alletain, who has the same mother as Levantia Shaytham. She was imprisoned in a tower deep in the mountains by her older brother Victor when a war for the throne broke out. She resigns herself to her fate of being locked in the tower forever, but she's later rescued by the Blue Foxes, who ask her to validate that Fredret is Levantia Shaytham. As she bears the Mark of the Blessed, she has exceptional ability with magic.

  • Caged Bird Metaphor: Directly stated in the library that she accepted that she'd be trapped in her birdcage (the tower she was imprisoned in) forever, which ruined her drive to escape despite the fact she likely could have done so on her own due to her immense magical ability.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: She really doesn't like being locked up in the tower and gladly joins the Blue Foxes for the chance to experience freedom. It's also lightly implied that this is the reason she goes along with Fredret impersonating her brother.
  • Living Lie Detector: She knows deep down that Fredret isn't actually her brother, but doesn't reveal this to anyone.
  • Sole Survivor: By the end of the game, she's the last living Shaytham and the only one who possesses the Mark of the Blessed, but her fate is left unknown after Andrias kills Fredret and becomes the new general of the Empire's army.
