Main Characters

     Yuko Kawai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuko2_8.jpg
Voiced by: Masami Suzuki

The main protagonist.

  • Athletically Challenged: Especially seen in the Baseball Episode, where Yuko is by far the worst player compared to both the other girls and the boys.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite being kind and shy, she can occasionally snap at the ones who make her angry.
  • Book Dumb: She constantly struggles with a poor academic performance. One of the reasons why she feels inferior to her boyfriend Hiroshi.
  • Class Princess: Despite her many insecurities, she is Loved by All, and she befriends everyone easily wherever she goes. It helps that she is sweet-natured, pretty, and the girlfriend of the most popular boy in the school.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She dramatically overreacts whenever her boyfriend Hiroshi is around Natsumi, another girl who is love with him and who has more common interests with Hiroshi than Yuko.
  • Drama Queen: Yuko has actually a very good life, many great friends and a great boyfriend, but she is able to turn every minor problem into a tragedy, crying over everything in almost every episode.
  • Dude Magnet: Hiroshi, Yamada, and Fuyuki fall for her. In the Perspective Flip episode we see that there were other boys who liked her too, but everyone has always known she was meant to be with Hiroshi.
  • Extreme Doormat: She usually tries too hard to please everyone and doesn't want to upset people. As a result, she often lies to others because she is scared of people's reaction.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Yuko is Book Dumb and foolish, while her older sister Toshiko is very serious and responsible.
  • Insecure Love Interest: To an exaggerated extent. Many of her overdramatic obsessions are caused by her insecurities about not being good enough for Hiroshi. Even though Hiroshi has only eyes for her, and everyone knows it.
  • Most Writers Are Writers: Despite being Book Dumb, she is known for being very good at writing stories.
  • Naïve Everygirl: Yuko means well but is the typical naïve and shy teenage girl who is insecure and vulnerable in every situation.
  • Nice Girl: While she occasionally shows some flaws of the typical teenage girl (stubborn, Bratty Teenage Daughter, gets upset easily), she also has a very good heart and a warm demeanor which make her befriend other people easily.
  • Oblivious to Love: Yuko is generally clueless when a boy is interested in her, until the boy tells her to her face.
  • Prone to Tears: She breaks down crying in almost every episode.
  • Shrinking Violet: Despite having many friends, Yuko is extremely shy when it comes to her feelings.

     Hiroshi Naganuma
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiroshi1.jpg
Voiced by: Jun Akiyama

Yuko's childhood friend and Love Interest.

  • Academic Athlete: He is a Lovable Jock who plays soccer, and also among the best students in the school.
  • The Ace: He was an average kid when he was younger, but now he is known as the most intelligent, athletic, and popular boy in the school.
  • Always Someone Better: To Yuko, who constantly feels inferior to him. Hiroshi is a confident overachiever, while Yuko is an insecure underachiever.
  • Big Man on Campus: Most students in the school idolize Hiroshi.
  • Boy Next Door: Literally to Yuko. They have been friends all their lives while living next door to each other.
  • Chick Magnet: Almost all the girls at school want him, but he only has eyes for Yuko.
  • He's All Grown Up: As a kid, he was an average kid with glasses. In junior high, after removing the glasses and starting to play soccer, he has become a Chick Magnet. Yuko has trouble accepting it.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Pretty much his only flaw is that he often unintentionally offends Yuko, without realizing it. Although Yuko has the tendency to overreact.
  • Lovable Jock: The star of the soccer team, and very friendly and pleasant to everyone.
  • Loved by All: Both he and Yuko are loved by everyone, and everyone is a Shipper on Deck for them.
  • Nice Guy: Despite being sometimes Innocently Insensitive to Yuko, he is very devoted to her and he would do anything to make her happy.
  • Oblivious to Love: He never realized Natsumi was in love with him, until she told him.

     Takako Takahata
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takako1_7.jpg
Voiced by: Chieko Higuchi

Yuko's best friend.

  • Book Dumb: Like Yuko, she hates studying and gets bad grades. Unlike Yuko, who is ashamed of it, Takako couldn't care less.
  • Brutal Honesty: Always the first one to tell the harsh truth to people. She doesn't care if this can make her unpopular.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Prone to snide and dismissive remarks. Her later interactions with Kitano are Snark-to-Snark Combat.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She is much bitchier and more unreasonable in the beginning. She later becomes more approachable, but she still has her rough edges.
  • Foil: To Yuko. Yuko is an insecure Shrinking Violet who is afraid of the others's opinions. Takako is a blunt, independent, and rebellious girl, no matter what people think about her. At least on the surface.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: In the beginning, she was part of the group only because of Yuko, while everyone else hated her. In later episodes, she becomes more appreciated also by the other friends.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She is very temperamental, as part of her personality.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her bold behavior, she has hidden insecurities that she doesn't want to show.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While she has a negative attitude, Takako is right more than half of the time.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is snide and harsh, but deep down a caring friend who cares about others, especially Yuko. That's why Yuko likes her and respects her.
  • Only Sane Woman: She is often the voice of reason, but her Brutal Honesty often irritates others.
  • Shipper on Deck: Despite her initial crush on Hiroshi, she quickly becomes a huge Hiroshi/Yuko supporter.
  • Tsundere: In general, but especially to her Love Interest. He acts like a Dogged Nice Guy to her and she is very rude to him in return, but only to hide the fact that she likes him too.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With everyone, even Yuko sometimes. But she later develops this dynamic especially with Kitano, as they are good friends who are regularly bickering.

Supporting Characters

     Miyuki Kitano
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kitano1.jpg
Voiced by: Eri Miyajima

A loner girl who eventually befriends Yuko and Takako.

  • Book Smart: A bookish academic overachiever, in contrast to Yuko and Takako who both hate studying.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Downplayed. She has short hair, but she is quite feminine in general.
  • Go-Getter Girl: She studies very hard because she wants to be successful in the future.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: She had no friends before meeting Yuko. Which is ironic, since the other Book Smart character Hiroshi is so popular.
  • Last-Name Basis: She is called "Kitano-san".
  • Mirror Character: To Takako. She is an uptight overachiever, while Takako is a rebellious underachiever. But outside of that, they have a lot in common, as they are both strong-minded, stubborn, and a bit temperamental.
  • No Social Skills: She was originally an introverted girl who had trouble bonding with others. Until she becomes close to Yuko, who also helps her to find other friends.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Takako. The two are regularly bickering but they are still close and they have more in common than what they realize.

     Shikito Hashimoto
Voiced by: Tetsuya Iseya

One of Hiroshi's best friends.

  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: He is very attracted to pretty girls, but most of them find him annoying.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Shallow, insensitive, and obnoxious, but overall he is a decent guy, and his good side is especially seen in later episodes.
  • Satellite Character: He is just a sidekick most of the time. Subverted in the last few episodes, where he gets some storylines.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: The closest thing to one among Yuko and Hiroshi's friends, since he's rarely taken seriously.

     Fuyuki Miyauchi
Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio

Another of Hiroshi's best friends.

  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In the last few episodes, it's revealed that he has always loved Yuko but he knew he never had a chance with her, so he has become supportive of her relationship with Hiroshi.
  • Nice Guy: He is very mature and polite.
  • Satellite Character: Most of the time, he is just a sidekick and a good friend to both Hiroshi and Yuko. Like Shikito, he gets some spotlight in the last few episodes.
     Mari Sengawa
Voiced by: Miwa Matsumoto

An old friend of Yuko and Takako.

     Rumiko Hirayama
Voiced by: Yukiko Matsuura

Another old friend of Yuko and Takako.

  • The Generic Girl: She has no characterizion aside from being a generic friend. Even her crush on Shikito is not really explained or developed.
  • Satellite Character: Like Mari, she is just a casual friend of the protagonists, who is mostly Out of Focus.
  • What Does She See in Him?: For some reason, she has a crush on Shikito, who is both the least attractive and the most obnoxious of her male friends. Lampshaded by Takako.

     Natsumi Kugayama
Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto

A schoolmate and manager of Hiroshi's soccer team.

  • Always Someone Better: To Yuko. Natsumi is very pretty and shares with Hiroshi the same interest in soccer. This makes Yuko feel insecure and jealous, because she thinks Hiroshi may like Natsumi more than her, something that obviously never happens.
  • Cute Sports Club Manager: Of Hiroshi's soccer team. She is also secretly in love with Hiroshi.
  • Nice Girl: She is nice to everyone, and eventually accepts that Hiroshi could never love her.
  • The Rival: To Yuko. Natsumi doesn't hate Yuko at all, but she still tries to win over Hiroshi, while knowing he already has a girlfriend.
