    Elise
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3526.jpeg

The female lead. Her father was the previous lord of the Trauslid family while her mother was a prostitute, something her relatives loath with every fiber in their being. She was engaged to Conrad before the start of the story, but he’s killed in combat. She’s forced to marry his killer, who’s widely believed to be a bloodthirsty general. Naturally she’s terrified to getting hitched with such a man, but Elise starts to appreciate her new husband as she discovers his true heart.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: The poor girl has been forced to be her family’s servant who who knows how long, all because her mother was a prostitute, something her family loves to ridicule. They practically treat her as worse than dirt, but the worst of them is the matriach, Hirskhorn, as she constantly beats her with a cane while accusing HER of being the terrible one.
  • Beast and Beauty: The beauty to Wolf’s beast.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She’s the Shrinking Violet and a gentle kind-hearted girl, but when pushed too far, even Elise can have her limits. Such as calling out Hirskorn over how Conrad had sexually abused her and declaring her devotion to Wolf (which came to naught has it earned her a beating), then fights back against Maximillian with a vicious Cane Fu when he tries to force himself on her.
  • Broken Bird: Slaved away at the expense of her family, ridiculed over her mother’s origins, along with sever beatings from her easily angered matriarch, its like the whole world had it out against Elise before the story even started. She agreed to marry Conrad as he promised to take her away from her abusive family and cherish her, even though she didn’t feel love towards him but was desperate to get the hell out of dodge. But one the night before he enlisted to the military, it strongly implies Conrad forced himself on her. Elise admits to Wolf that Conrad believed since she’s the daughter of a prostitute, then somehow she wouldn’t mind, even though she did, yet he still raped her.
  • Birds of a Feather: Between her and Wolf, she sees a lot of similarities. Both are loathed for who they are and never chose the life forced upon them, are kind hearted individuals, and see each other as the one missing piece they’ve been missing for their whole lives.
  • Daughter of a Whore: The Trauslid family constantly rub it in her face over her mother’s prostitution origins, especially Hirskhorn. It’s gotten so bad that the same old bitch has the audacity to consider Elise a prostitute as well.
  • Hair Intakes: She sports this hairstyle. It’s kinda smaller than most examples, but a lot of chapters will emphasis this hairstyle on her.
  • Love Epiphany: In chapter 10 she gets caught in the clutches on an assassin, which makes her life flash before her but can only she herself with Wolf, as she thinks over how kind he’s treated her. It’s at that moment she realizes her love for Wolf, but is heartbroken she’s about to die at that very second. Fortunately her husband comes home just in time, urges the assassin to let her go and take him instead. But Andreas manages to subdue the assassin and get him restrained and imprisoned. Elise is very much relived to have Wolf alive.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: She’s forced to marry her fiance’s killer in place of the princess, all the while everyone is shaming her for daring to get hitched so quickly after said fiance’s funeral, even though it’s obvious she had no say in the matter! Elise greatly feared Wolf’s bloodthirsty reputation is true and is especially afraid of his burnt scars, but she comes to learn a great deal about him and discovers he’s nothing as the rumors made him out to be. She soon falls in love with Wolf for what a Nice Guy he turned out to be.
  • Shrinking Violet: Given what kind of hell she’s been loving for her entire life under her abusive family’s thumb, it’s no wonder she’s very shy and insecure over herself.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Given her new husband’s killer reputation on the war front, Elise greatly feared him and especially shocked when he removes his mask and shows his horribly burnt scars. She eventually feels guilty for misjudging him when discovering Wolf has a golden heart underneath his tough exterior, is remorseful for all the blood he spilled, and shocked for the event that lead to his negative reputation was orchestrated by the nobility who pinned the blame on him. She’s especially taken Wolf treating her so kindly and humane, as opposed to the general hate she receives by practically everyone.
  • Slut-Shaming: A frequent victim of this. Especially at her wedding to Wolf, as a lot of attendees lampshade this trope over the audacity to marry so quickly after her own fiancé’s funeral, even though she had no say in the matter. But Hirskhorn takes this up a notch by outright calling her a prostitute to her face since her mother was one.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Very much so.
    • Conrad was taken by her beauty and wished to wed her; she only agreed as a means to escape her family. But she strongly feared Conrad as it’s strongly hinted that he raped her which turned out to be true, and he honestly thought she wanted it since her mother was a prostitute, so the bastard thought she had the same mindset as well.
    • Maximillian makes creepy advances towards her by grabbing her hair and complementing her beauty, all of this before revealing he’s to give her away at her forced wedding. But this only terrifies her as she’s reminded of Conrad. Then Maximillian forced her to be his dance partner even though she’s visibly uncomfortable, especially as he goes on complementing her beauty in a creepy tone while calling her husband a monster. After declaring her devotion to her husband, revealing Conrad had raped her, and chews out Maximillian for his tyrannical personality, he slaps her and goes as far as to try to rape her after getting the okay from Hirskhorn. Elise manages to push him off but this gets him even more enraged. Her response is to beat him up with Hirkshorn’s cane and run off.
     General Wolfried “Wolf”
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3523.jpeg

The male lead. He has a nasty reputation as a bloodthirsty general, yet he turns out to have a human heart but still forced to kill in times of war. He’s remorseful for his past deeds, so he accepts his Arranged Marriage to one of his men’s fiancée and fully accepts any Revenge to befall on him. But Elise turns out to warm his heart.

  • Animal Motifs: Wolves. Not just that “Wolf” literally is his real name, but as his killer reputation begins to grow ever stronger, it earns him the moniker, Wolfried, and is seen as a Savage Wolf. But it turns out he’s nothing as the rumors make him out to be, but he’s still a general while a war is ongoing, yet he’s still remorseful for all the blood that has spilled. Making him more of a Noble Wolf as he wishes for any karma that may befall him and treats his new wife with kindness and humanity. He also wears a wolf-like mask to hide the upper half of his face.
  • The Atoner: He admits the reason he accepted his Arranged Marriage to Elise is because he knew her family is planning something terrible, and since he killed her fiancé in battle, saw it as karma for all the killings he did in war.
  • Beast and Beauty: The beast to Elise’s beauty.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Back when he was a mere soldier, a nobleman created a huge fire to destroy the enemy army without regarding the lives of his own army. The enemies may have been taken out but a lot of his soldiers got murdered as a result. This horrified everyone, but the upper class were horrified at the idea of losing face since the nobleman responsible for this died during the battle, but noticed Wolf managed to survive but suffered horrific burns. Since he was a commoner, The nobility pinned the blame on him to make it more believable that a lowborn like him would be more likely to sacrifice his own soldiers. It’s because of this event that led to his bloodthirsty reputation.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Wolf points out with an ongoing war that has no mean to end any time soon, he had to make drastic decisions, like killing Conrad with the enemy army since he refused to obey. He doesn’t regret all the killings he has done, even if he has been framed for killings he had nothing to do with. He brings up that War Is Hell, but there’s nothing he can do to sugar coat it when it comes to killing his country’s enemies, and everything he’s done was for the good of the empire. He went from a measly lowborn farmer to a high-ranking general, his own mansion, and marriage with a noble lady like Elise. But deep down he regrets how far he’s come and wants karma to befall on him, but Elise convinces him not to kick himself over his guilt eating him up and accept it’s not to late to change.
  • Nice Guy:
    • What Elise picks up on her Samaritan Relationship Starter on him is how kind he treated a little boy gifting him some flowers as a congratulations to his wedding and expresses his gratitude for his dad coming home alive. He eventually pressed the flowers and turned them into a bookmark.
    • He treats Elise like an actual human being with tender gentleness in contrast to the usual scorn she receives from the nobility. Sure he came off as creepy with the way he grabbed her face and gloated over how he killed Conrad, but he immediately apologizes after his rant and admits it wasn’t his true feelings. From that point on, Wolf treasures Elise with every kindness she deserved.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: He never wanted to marry the princess, but rather Elise, because he wanted karma for all the blood he spilled, particularly her fiancé, Conrad, who he killed in battle and predicted she wanted Revenge. But he’s surprised how devoted and grateful Elsie is towards him. He’s especially taken by her urging him not to get so beaten up over his past deeds and how it’s never too late for a change in heart.
  • Scars Are Forever: He doesn’t just has his burnt scars on the right side of his face and neck, but later chapters reveal his burnt scars also cover his right arm, chest, and right hand.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Happens in chapter 6. He talks to Elise while looking at his hand how it was necessary to kill Conrad, even so another battle begun since they’re still at war. Then he visualizes his hand dripping with blood as he talks of how one will turn their sights on their allies to fight once the enemies disappear. And brings up if this would satisfy a starving wolf like him and if it was worthy sacrificing a princess for his accomplishments.
    Duchess Gilberta Hirskhorn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3533.jpeg
A member of the Trauslid from the past two generations, she leads the family with an iron fist. And she especially hates Elise the most over her mother’s origins, and prefers to remind her with Cane Fu. She kickstarts the plot into her forced marriage to General Wolfstien.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: AND HOW! She firmly believes that everyone below nobility is more worthless than dirt, and sees Elise as such since her mother was a prostitute. She sees this as a soil to the Trauslid’s reputation, and forces Elise to be the family servant, verbally and physically abuse her, then forced her to marry her fiancé’s killer.
  • Cane Fu: Her preferred method on dealing with Elise over anything the poor girl does.
  • Color Motif: She constantly decks herself in purple to highlight her blue-blood ties to such an elite household.
  • Entitled Bitch: Demands Elise to pay back her debt to the Trauslid clan by forcing her to marry Conrad’s killer out of pure spite. After beating Elise up with the Cane Fu over her blind loyalty to Conrad despite his sexual assault on Elise, she expects Elise to obey her and not to run away with her cane AFTER using said cane to defend herself from Maximillian trying to rape her.
  • Female Misogynist: Where do we even start?!
    • Every fiber in her being hates Elise just because her mother was a prostitute. To the point of telling Elise she is one herself.
    • Beats it into Elise while “teaching” two other young girls in the family how the most important role for a woman is to get into an Arranged Marriage and be devoted to one’s husband, no matter what.
    • She allies with Maximillian over his sister in order to help him be the next crowned heir.
    • She calls Elise deluded into thinking she could honestly believe herself to be General Wolfried’s wife, and coldly tells her she’s nothing but a sacrificial offering.
    • She beats up Elise after declaring Conrad raped her and feels devoted to his killer and her new husband, but she has the gall to accuse Elise of feeling ungrateful over Conrad’s “affections”.
    • The most bitchiest and final lowest point for her is giving permission for Maximillian to rape Elise, directly AFTER she admits she’s been raped, but sees it perfectly fine to let her raped AGAIN is brutally the worst thing the old bitch has ever done. PERIOD.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Just the mere presence of Elise will give her a reason to set her off and attack her with the Cane Fu.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Seriously, after abusing the heck out of Elise, forcing her to be a servant, and coldly Slut-Shaming her over her mother’s origins, and she has the audacity to guilt-trip Elise into believing she’s cold-hearted and ungrateful?!
    • Even when she’s a strong believer as a Female Misogynist and sides with Maximillian over his sister so that he will be the next crowned heir, she sees it perfectly fine to be the head of the Trauslid family. In other words, she doesn’t want a woman to be in a powerful leader position, but is okay with being a leader herself.
  • Jerkass: Understatement of the century.
  • Kick the Dog: She does this as if it’s as normal as breathing.
  • Lack of Empathy: Her response to Elise’s revealing why she couldn’t feel sad at Conrad’s death nor hate his killer. It’s because he really did raped Elise in the night before his military leave. But instead of sympathizing with Elise, she gets even more furious at Elise for daring to be ungrateful towards his “affection” and feels it as a duty to avenge him.
  • Never My Fault: She harshly reprimands Elise for not feeling mad at Conrad’s killer and criticizes her marriage to said killer. Despite the glaring facts that she forced Elise into an Arranged Marriage with Conrad’s killer in the first place.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: Take a wild guess.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: No matter how much Elsie is forced into serving Hirskhorn and the rest of the Trauslid family, the hag is STILL never satisfied and continues to beat her up with a cane. And she has the gall to believe Elise is the one who’s ungrateful.
  • Wants a Prize for Basic Decency: She abuses Elise into believing she owes a debt to the Trauslid family, particularly her, since Elise was allowed to live under their roof. Never mind the fact that Elise was also forced to be their servant while never treating her with ANY shred of respect and kindness. Then she forces Elise into an Arranged Marriage with her fiance’s killer out of spite, while reprimanding her over the forced marriage at the same time!
    House Trauslid
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3534.jpeg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3536.jpeg
A noble household that Elise originates from. They all hate her because she’s the daughter of a prostitute while her father was the family’s previous lord.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: They’re the family that abused Elise into being their servant for who knows how long, just because her mother was a prostitute.
  • Alpha Bitch: Two young girls in the family act like this towards Elise. They reprimand her over her, mind you, forced marriage to Conrad’s killer, while she’s modeling for her wedding dress at the same time. They come back the next day just so they can remind Elise that such a beautiful dress is wasted on her.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: In this case it’s two of them.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • Elsie remembers in the first chapter that her female cousins saw her unworthy as Conrad’s bride.
    • The two girls watch Elise and Wolf dancing at the royal ball with extreme scorn and envy. Even though they shamed Elise over her forced marriage to Wolf and joked with their father over taking her place, yet they both get jealous over seeing Elise happily dancing with Wolf.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • The whole family treat Elise like utter shit just because her mother was a prostitute. And just for that she’s forced to be their servant.
    • It’s bad enough that Elise is forced to marry against her will, but to reprimand her over her forced marriage AFTER her fiance’s funeral is uncalled for. All of this while she’s modeling for her wedding dress, then to come back the next day just to remind Elise how worthless she is and shouldn’t deserve to wear a beautiful dress.

    Prince Maximillian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3532.jpeg
Apollonia’s brother who’s competing with his sister to become the next crowned heir. He has the hots for Elise, much to her displeasure.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Noticing a theme here? Turns out a lot of the bloodiest battles he orchestrated got blamed on Wolf.
  • Attempted Rape: He tries to force himself on Elise, not even giving a crap over how she truly feels about him, especially after he reveals his plans to frame her husband. Fortunately she pushes him off and gives him the Cane Fu treatment.
  • Beauty Is Bad: A tall and handsome blue-eyed prince that be anyone’s fairytale fantasy come to life, but turns out to be The Caligula.
  • Prince Charmless: Literally into their first meeting, Elise is shocked that a prince will be giving her away in place of her father. Then he gets creepy as he tries to put the moves on her as he grabs a lock of her hair while talking non-stop of her beauty. He bemoans how he wished he could have saved both her and his sister, then brags who her new husband, who’s seen as The Dreaded. He just gets much worse.
  • Royal Brat: He’s competing with his sister as the next crown heir, and he’s shaping up to be The Caligula.
  • Villainous Crush: The first thing out of his mouth when he first meets Elise is gushing over how beautiful she is while caressing her hair, much to her displeasure as she’s instantly reminded of Conrad. After revealing his plans to frame Wolf in trying to assassinate Apollonia, he tries to rape Elise.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He slaps Elise when she calls him out in his tyrannical bloodlust, then tries to rape her after getting the okay from Hirskhorn. Elise’s response is to push him off and by the next chapter, beats him up with Hirskhorn’s cane, then escapes.
    Princess Apollonia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3538.jpeg

A princess who the feared General Wolfstien wanted to wed, but in reality it’s the other way around. She’s determined to win the throne someday, and hopes to make him as her “dog” with marriage sealing the deal, but the Trauslid family put a stop to it with Elise taking her place.

  • King Incognito: Elise is surprised to have such a lively dance instructor who constantly ask about Wolf… until he shows up and reprimands Apollonia for showing up uninvited to his wife. Elise is shocked that a princess like her would be her dance instructor without revealing who she really was, but Apollonia continues to her dedication to teach Elise how to dance.
  • Nice Girl: Sure they came off at the wrong foot, but she turns out to be kind and befriends Elise. She even loans Elise her own dresses and accessories for the upcoming royal ball as a reward for passing her dance lessons with her. Another motive is to show off their closeness and prove Elise has a powerful ally backing her up. Given how terrible everyone had treated Elise, it speaks volumes for a princess like her to stand up for Elise.
  • Royal Brat: Her view on marriage is… warped. She really wants to marry Wolf to better her chances as the next crowned heir, but sees views him as a “dog” to work to the bone. When she meets Elise, she refers to her as his “owner” and suggests they switch. Elise politely refuses and the subject is dropped. She’s still not as bad as her brother.
     Master Conrad
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3541.jpeg

A young nobleman with a popular reputation because of his good looks, he was engaged to Elise, but she only agreed in order to get away from the Trauslid family. But she comes to regret it when an unfortunate incident happens to her. He’s killed in combat by Wolf before the start of the story, and his fiancée is forced to marry his killer. Essentially, his death kickstarts the plot.

  • Asshole Victim: Died before the start of the series, and Elise doesn’t miss him one but since it strongly implies he raped her at one point. Which he did.
  • Beauty Is Bad: He’s outright called beautiful, instead of handsome, as everybody loves to point this out. But Elise doesn’t think to highly of him. Her gut instinct turns out to be right.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: A lot of people mourned that such a “beautiful” young man died too soon. Except for his fiancée, Elise, since she feared him. Rightfully so, since he raped her before he left for the army.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Wolf reveals this was his fate in the way he killed him.
    • He refuse to take orders from his General and charged into enemy line head on, just because he wanted to show off how brave he was. It’s hinted that it was because a nobleman like Conrad loathed the idea of obeying a commoner like Wolf, despite the latter’s higher military ranking.
    • Didn’t bring a gun into a war-torn battlefield because it seemed cowardly.
    • Wolf warned him once again if he didn’t fall back and obey, he will have to kill him with the enemy army. Conrad refused and gets instantly barbecued.
    • And finally, Wolf theorized Conrad’s reckless death stemmed from his belief that he could never burn alive because he’s a nobleman. Wolf found it amusing to prove him wrong. And he’s revealing all of this to Conrad’s fiancée who he has now married.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: It’s been implied since chapter 1 that he forced himself on Elise. She eventually confides in Wolf that he did indeed rape her, as he honestly believed since her mother was a prostitute, then Elise wouldn’t object. Come the next morning, he outright tells her they should live together as soon as he comes back from the war. Elise’s response is to pray he never, EVER returned. Her prayers were answered when her then-husband killed him in battle.
  • Villainous Crush: Despite Elise’s background, he was really obsessed to have her as his wife. She honestly didn’t hold him in any romantic regard, but she was desperate to get away from her abusive family, so she jump at the first call and accepted his proposal. Elise would come to regret it when the bastard raped her while under the delusion she would accept it since her mother was a prostitute. And he delighted and the idea they’ll live together once he comes back from the war. He never got the chance since he’s killed in combat.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: His whitish-silver hair is even more pale than Elise. And she greatly feared him for all the right reasons.
    Andreas Weideland
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3520.jpeg

Despite being a Count, he’s a close ally and friend to Wolf, despite the latter’s common background. He’s not comfortable with Elise Arranged Marriage to his friend, because a marriage with a princess would have secured more protection, but eventually concedes.

  • Oh, Crap!: He offers to dance with Elise, only for Prince Maximillian to cut in, shocking Andreas into silence, and forces her to be his dance partner. Elise tries to get back to Andrea’s’ side, but he reacts with horror.
  • Skewed Priorities: Complains to continue his conversation with Wolf, despite having just saved Elise from an assassin, and is understandably terrified and wounded from the encounter. Wolf calls him out on it.
  • Undying Loyalty: He’s strongly devoted to Wolf since his bravery is a strong inspiration to many soldiers.
    Mia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3515.jpeg
Elsie’s maid when she moves to Wolf’s estate once she marries him. She’s rather rude to her new mistress, but eventually sees Elise in a new light after getting to know her.

  • Everyone Has Standards: Rudely told Elise to clean up after she’s done baking deserts, but she’s shocked when Elsie calmly points out she’s use to it.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She acted like a bitch towards Elise, but eventually feels remorseful over her past behavior, especially after Elise is almost killed by an assassin. From that point on she becomes more dedicated and much more friendlier to her mistress.
  • Tender Tears: She sheds the waterworks after the assassin incident on Elise, fearing she’s really going to leave for good. Turns to happy tears when Elise makes it clear she’s not going anywhere.
  • Undying Loyalty:
    • Feels this way towards Wolf, since he took her in after a fire swept her village and killed her family.
    • She initially hated Elise because she hoped Wolf’s prospective marriage to a princess would guarantee him protection, but eventually warms up too her.
