Konata Izumi
Which end of a chocolate cornet do you start from?
Voiced by: Ryō Hirohashi (JP [Drama CD/NDS game]), Aya Hirano (JP [Anime/PS2 game]) and Wendee Lee (EN)
A diminutive high schooler who's much more interested in video games, anime and manga than doing actual schoolwork. Her interest in popular culture is truly staggering.
- Affectionate Nickname: Tsukasa calls her "Kona-chan".
- Ambiguously Bi: She's quick to comment on other girls' cuteness and Moe traits (especially in regards to Kagami and Miyuki) and plays a lot of H-Games aimed at straight men. However, she has stated she's not into real-life lesbian relationships, so it's not clear how much she really is attracted to girls outside of fiction. She also occasionally shows interest in getting a boyfriend.Konata: Well, yeah, that's true, but for now, I have no interest in being a lesbian in real life. It just all happened this way.
- Badass Bookworm: Despite her generally sedentary lifestyle, Konata is always praised for athleticism. The only reason why she never wanted to be an athlete, she told Tsukasa, because she would not have time for anime. And when it comes to playing quiz games, she is Miyuki-level, though her flaw is being too lazy, and Kagami even commented that if Konata used that willpower into studying she would be a high-achiever. She also knows Martial Arts, but only because her father sent her to the lessons.
- Blue with Shock: For all the times she leaves Kagami like this, she's not immune to it herself, such as when they go to the beach and chooses to ride with Ms. Kuroi because her cousin Yui Drives Like Crazy when sent into road rage, only for Ms. Kuroi to get completely lost.Konata: I messed up big time! I didn't expect them both to fail!
- Brilliant, but Lazy: While Konata is usually a slacker, she's actually quite smart and can get high grades when she's motivated enough; it's telling that despite her typical laziness, the top-achiever Miyuki Takara became one of her best friends. Kagami frequently lampshades how Konata could easily be a high achiever if she channelled all the passion she has for anime and video games into studying. In a Volume 6 strip, Kagami isn't surprised at the prospect of Konata getting into Tokyo University just because it's close to Akihabara (of course, she doesn't get into so prestigious a university as Tokyo U).
- Characterization Marches On: Lampshaded by Yoshimizu himself at the end of Volume 1. At the onset Konata was supposedly a cool Gamer Chick who plays dumb, only to turn into a down-to-earth, full-blown Otaku Surrogate. Orwellian Retcon was applied in the published volumes to make her image consistent.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Her connection to reality outside games and anime is tenuous at best. She frequently makes comparisons between real life situations and anime or games, and the references she makes often confuse her friends.
- Cosplay Otaku Girl: A more downplayed example, as while she's definitely a huge Otaku she's really only ever seen cosplaying for her job at a Cosplay Café. She doesn't see cosplay as a hobby since according to her, it feels too much like work.
- Deadpan Snarker: Occasionally, like when her father tearfully made her promise him not to die before him, she just replied "Okay, I wasn't really planning on it or anything."
- Deliberately Cute Child: Konata will sometimes do this in conjecture with her short stature, to fool others into thinking she's a child, allowing her to get cheaper movie tickets.
- Dirty Old Man: Even though she is neither "old" or a "man", Kagami thinks she is one anyway with how she deliberately misreads some things as innuendos for laughs and has No Sense of Personal Space.
- Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: Konata is always drawn with half-lidded eyes, as she is a laid-back slacker.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Misao calls her "Chibikko/Chibi" in the original Japanese and "Bite Size" or "Midget" in the dub.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Anime Tenchou and his group only know her as "Legendary Girl 'A'" since they have no realistic way of learning her name and are obsessed with getting her to buy their stuff.
- Everyone Has Standards: She may be a huge Otaku who frequently talks about other girls' Moe traits and has a questionable grasp on reality, but she's still put off by her otaku father's fixation on underage girls and often worries he'll get arrested.
- Fangirl: While she's already a huge Otaku in general, in the anime she's an especially big fan of Haruhi Suzumiya. She owns tons of Haruhi merchandise and gets especially excited when Patty bribes her with tickets to see Aya Hirano, Haruhi's voice actress (who, incidentally, is also Konata's own voice actress). That said, despite her fanaticism, she isn't exempt from criticizing the anime adaptation, as she does upon watching the episode "Someday in the Rain", being unimpressed by how the studio cut corners with the infamous long-winded shots of Nagato reading a book.
- Fun Size: She's seventeen, later eighteen years old, but stands at only 142cm (4'8").
- The Gadfly: She has a tendency to push people's buttons just for the fun of it, especially Kagami's. After a certain amount of watching one can only wonder if Kagami would be a Tsundere at all if Konata didn't constantly mess with her.
- Gamer Chick: She has dedicated large portions of her life to excessive gaming of every genre, and she can easily beat Kagami no matter what kind of game they play.
- Genre Savvy: Only some of the time. The rest of the time, she thinks she's in an H-Game.
- Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She has a fox plush among various manga volumes near her bed, and a big penguin plush located on one of her bedroom's shelves.
- Height Angst: Downplayed; she'll sometimes be frustrated by how short she is and is annoyed whenever Kagami teases her about her height, but at the same time she's not above using her short stature and youthful looks to her advantage.
- Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Zigzagged; the end credits for the first half of the anime show that Konata can be very off-key when singing upbeat, passionate theme songs from anime and TV shows (such as when she sings "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" from Dragon Ball Z in Episode 5), but she's a much better singer when she's singing calmer and slower-paced songs (like "Sore ga, Ai deshou?" from Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu).
- Idiot Hair: She has a noticeable strand of hair that always sticks up. While she's more Brilliant, but Lazy than an idiot, her grasp on reality can be questionable at times due to how much of an Otaku she is. In at least one strip the Hiiragi twins couldn't recognize Konata aside from her idiot hair.
- Loners Are Freaks: Kagami has that kind of mentality towards her, even if she's far from a recluse. She's rather outgoing but is definitely weird and eccentric.
- Meaningful Name: Konata's name means "here". Her late mother Kanata's name means "there". Or "this person" and "that person" respectively.
- Missing Mom: Her mom died of an illness when she was still a baby, and as such, she can't remember her brief times with her.
- No Periods, Period: In the anime, during a discussion on women's periods, Kagami insinuates that Konata doesn't undergo one. Konata doesn't say anything on the subject.
- Nice Girl: Despite her mischievous streak and eccentric nature, she's good-natured and friendly.
- Older Than They Look: She's seventeen (later eighteen) years of age, but she's short and flat-chested enough to get mistaken for a prepubescent child. Her immature, childish nature doesn't help either. She's not usually bothered by this, since she sometimes uses her youthful appearance to her advantage.
- Only Sane Man: Despite being quirky and eccentric, she can be this sometimes when she's the calm one around an angry Kagami.
- Otaku Surrogate: In a series full of otakus, she stands out the most by virtue of having "male otaku" traits. Aside from a brief obsession with MariMite and making a single reference to Wedding Peach, she has no interest in any series aimed at girls and is hugely into anime and games primarily aimed at a male audience. One strip lampshaded this, saying she is only biologically female.
- Perpetual Smiler: Downplayed; her default expression is a Playful Cat Smile, but she does openly show other emotions as well.
- Petite Pride: She used to feel bad about being flat-chested, until she played a game which had flatness as a desirable status, which bolstered her confidence completely.
- Playful Cat Smile: Her default expression, which is fitting with her playful nature and her tendency to be The Gadfly (especially towards Kagami).
- Proud to Be a Geek: Konata holds absolutely no reservations about her Otaku hobbies.
- Raised by Dudes: Due to her mother passing away when she was very young, her father raised her mostly by himself. In fact, that's a good part of the reason why she's such an otaku; her father brought her along to Comiket and other conventions ever since she was around five.
- Ridiculous Procrastinator: We often get to see how much she procrastinates, yet her last-minute study can be amusingly effective at times.
- The Rival: To Misao, over which of them "owns" Kagami, and to Kou (albeit one-sided on the latter's part), over arcade fighting games.
- The Shameless: Konata will talk all day long without reservation about her otaku hobbies, including the erotic dating sims she plays. The only things that seem to faze her are people making fun of her short stature or threatening to cut her off from being able to copy Kagami's homework.
- Shared Family Quirks: Thanks to being primarily raised by her Otaku father Soujirou after her mother Kanata died early on, she shares Soujirou's shameless love of anime and video games, as well as a fondness for dropping references into regular conversations. Ironically, her mother had hoped that she wouldn't inherit her father's geeky personality.
- Sleepyhead: Even if her daytime drowsiness partly stems from her late-night anime watching and gaming, she belongs to the hardworking subtype of the trope.
- Still Believes in Santa: It's revealed that Konata still believes in Santa Claus when Tsukasa asks her when she stopped believing in him. Turns out Konata's father told her that the Christmas presents he gave to Konata every year were from Santa Claus himself.
- Strong Family Resemblance: Nearly a clone of her mom Kanata — down to her lack of growth spurt — except with her dad's skin tone and mole, an Idiot Hair on her head that Kanata lacks, and being one centimeter shorter than the latter.
- Terrible Artist: Drawing isn't exactly her forte, so to speak. Her drawings of her friends
look like they were drawn by a five-year old. - Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to the rest of the main cast's Girly Girls and to her cousin, Yutaka's Girly Girl.
- Tomboyish Ponytail: Occasionally has a ponytail which fits her boyish, athletic character.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She acts tomboyish thanks to being primarily raised by her father, almost always wears pants or shorts outside of school and is mainly into anime and games aimed at a male audience, but she did once get hooked on MariMite (which is a shoujo series) and can act the part of a stereotypical Ojou fairly well.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Chocolate cornets, which she's very often seen eating for lunch at school.
- Vitriolic Best Buds:
- Her relationship with Kagami is this. They may argue but they're genuinely best friends.
- She also this relationship with her teacher Nanako. She constantly drives her teacher mad with her shenanigans, and she often dreads Nanako catching her slacking off and punishing her for it, yet outside class she is friendly with her, sharing various hobbies with her and being in the same MMORPG party.
- Voice Changeling: Konata is very skilled at imitating voices. She's able to do an accurate imitation of Shin-chan, uses a very stereotypically feminine Ojou-style voice and speech patterns when she becomes hooked on Maria Watches Over Us, and is able to perfectly imitate Haruhi Suzumiya's voice while cosplaying as her (though as a bonus, both she and Haruhi have the same voice actress in both Japanese and English).
- Wrong Genre Savvy: Konata often talks about tripping Event Flags like she's in a Dating Sim, even though she's actually in a Slice of Life comedy.
- Yuri Fan: She watches Maria Watches Over Us and Strawberry Panic!, and bought some of Hiyori's Minami/Yutaka doujinshi at Comiket, although she's initially unaware that the latter was based on her otherwise innocent cousin.
Kagami Hiiragi
A little peek wouldn't hurt.
Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu (JP [Drama CD/NDS game]), Emiri Katou (JP [Anime/PS2 game) and Kari Wahlgren (EN)
Konata's closest friend and Tsukasa's older twin sister. She is easily angered by some of Konata's more..."playful" antics, but always seems to be the one who understands her hobbies. While she's nowhere near Konata's level of geekiness, she does enjoy scrolling shooter games and light novels.
- Book Smart: She gets really good grades due to putting a lot of effort into studying, especially compared to Konata and Tsukasa who aren't as hardworking.
- Challenge Gamer: Lampshaded in one episode, where she sees Misao having fun playing a fighting game despite not being very skilled at it, and is frustrated at herself for playing so seriously. This is quite similar to her tsun side in life.
- Character Catchphrase: "Mattaku..." ("Seriously/Really..."), whenever she's annoyed.
- Class Representative: Starts at Grade 10 in the manga, and Grades 11-12 in the anime.
- Deadpan Snarker: In the dub at least, she's usually annoyed when she snarks, but sometimes she's deadpan.
- Embarrassing Nickname:
- Konata sometimes calls her "Kagamin". Although it's meant be endearing (usually), Kagami doesn't always appreciate it.
- She accidentally invokes this on herself in an episode. After being annoyed by Konata trying to give her the nickname "Kyou-chan" (which is based on an Alternate Character Reading of her real name), she tells Konata to start calling her "Kagami-sama/Kagami the Great" instead, thinking Konata wouldn't actually do it. She does.
- First-Name Basis: It says a lot about how often Kagami comes over to Konata, Tsukasa, and Miyuki's class that all of their classmates casually refer to her by her first name, while everyone in her class still calls her by her last name. There's even a scene that lampshades this.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: In terms of personality, Kagami is the Straight Woman responsible sibling to Tsukasa's foolish, being smarter and a harder worker.
- Gamer Chick: Downplayed; while she's not as big of a gamer as Konata, she's still shown to enjoy playing scrolling shooters and occasionally fighting games.
- Generic Cuteness: Konata said Kagami would look forgettable should she cut off her pigtails in the manga. In the anime, she instead says Kagami needed to keep them since she's a tsundere.
- Girlish Pigtails: She wears her long hair in pigtails, which hints at her girlier side and fits her tsundere attitude. When Konata tries to imagine her without them, she decides that it's impossible since a tsundere has to have twintails.
- Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She doesn't love them as much as her sister, but she still owns a Bonta plush.
- Good is Not Nice: Downplayed; she can be a bit grumpy and aggressive, even towards her own sister Tsukasa, but there are moments that show she still cares about her sister and her friends.
- Hates Being Alone: Kagami would be too proud to ever admit it, but Konata suggests the former suffers from this. In fact, she feels sad and depressed when alone and needs her friends very much.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Kagami is a little cranky, brash and aggressive, and can be a bit egotistical at times. Still, she's a good person and cares for her friends, and she's ultimately quite kind despite her harshness. Then, would she ever be a jerk at all if it wasn't for Konata's mischief?
- The Lancer: Of the main cast. She's a Foil to The Hero Konata, after all.
- Lethal Chef: Konata likes to flanderize her as one, but she's just not as good as Tsukasa.
- Luminescent Blush: Naturally, during her deredere moments. Displayed a full body blush during her defining Comiket scene (her whole face and even her hands turned red).
- Meaningful Name: The four Hiiragi sisters all have Theme Naming going on with reference to the Shinto Religion. In Kagami's case, her name refers to mirrors, a sacred object in Shinto and part of the Imperial regalia.
- Miko: She works as a part-time miko along with Tsukasa and their older sisters, since their father is the local shrine's priest.
- Moe: In-Universe — her attitude is deemed adorable by Konata, which leads to lots of teasing. Cue Yuri Fanfics.
- Muggle: She plays this role in terms of otaku culture, although her prejudice in that is relatively minor. Her criticism is more concentrated in Konata's Dirty Old Man antics, irresponsible spending, laziness in studies, and the lack of a real-life goal.
- Not So Above It All: Especially in the last episode. We get hints of it early on, such as when she tries to call out Konata and Tsukasa for doing the whole Funny Fan Voice routine, only for her dad to cheerfully point out that she'd been doing it before Konata arrived.
- Only Sane Man: She's the most sane and normal of the main cast and probably the most normal a Lucky Star character can get. While she does have interests that can be considered "nerdy", as she's fond of light novels and scrolling shooter games, she's much more grounded in reality than the hardcore Otaku characters like Konata, Hiyori or Patty (who all have their various quirks and frequently compare things in real life to anime and games).
- Polar Opposite Twins: With Tsukasa, being the smart and responsible Straight Man compared to Tsukasa's ditzy, forgetful nature.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Kagami can either be Konata's blue or Tsukasa's red. Konata is playful and airheaded, while Kagami is serious and realistic; that said, Kagami is also quick to temper while Tsukasa is a Shrinking Violet.
- Straight Man: She's the most normal of the protagonists, and often calls out her friends and sister about their antics.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to Tsukasa's Girly Girl but Girly Girl to Konata's Tomboy.
- Tomboyish Ponytail: Seen with a ponytail once with Konata and Tsukasa. She didn't look good in it, being ungirlish.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Though she's not very good at housework and frequently uses masculine language (especially when she's angry), she also has a soft, sensitive girly side and wears her long hair in Girlish Pigtails.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Pocky
- Tsundere: A more platonic Harsh type, especially towards Konata. While she's often referred to as a tsundere even In-Universe, she's not the stereotypical "brutalize the protagonist" tsundere, since she's generally pretty kind. Her deredere side doesn't focus on romantic feelings but more on her loneliness in general, since she's more attached to her friends than she cares to admit and is secretly disappointed that she's never in the same homeroom class as Tsukasa and the others. Her Image Songs also focus on this — one is fast and upbeat, the other a bit slow and has lyrics hinting at her loneliness. Episode 10's "Lucky Channel" discusses at length whether "tsundere" is the right word to describe her.
- Tsurime Eyes: The most significant feature to distinguish her from Tsukasa, and to highlight her smart and serious nature. She currently provides the page image.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Konata. Konata often exchanges snarky remarks, while Kagami displays exasperation and frustration with Konata's lazy and hardcore Otaku nature.
- Weight Woe: She's very insecure about her weight and will always despair whenever she gains a few pounds, though it doesn't help that she's fond of snacks like Pocky. Even Konata gets annoyed by her fixation on her weight.Konata: (Sigh) This is one of the reasons why girls are so...
Kagami: Hello. You're supposed to be a girl, too, aren't you? - Yaoi Fangirl: Subverted. When she sees a a pretty graphic doujin of Gauron and Sousuke from Full Metal Panic! at Comiket, she takes a peek out of curiosity, but this results in a Luminescent Blush and a speedy exit since it was "too intense" for her.
Tsukasa Hiiragi
Voiced by: Mai Nakahara (JP [Drama CD/NDS game]), Kaori Fukuhara (JP [Anime/PS2 game]) and Michelle Ruff (EN)
Kagami's cheerful and very airheaded younger twin sister. She's actually very good at home chores and cooking, although she sometimes has to ask for Kagami's help because she forgets things easily.
- Beautiful Dreamer: Awwwww.◊ Granted, it's Kagami who discovers her sleeping, and there's no romantic intentions.
- Book Dumb: She doesn't have very good grades, unlike Kagami. Episode 2 has her try to fix this by planning out her study time during Golden Week, but she ends up forgetting to follow the plan.
- Butt-Monkey: A lot of jokes that revolve around Tsukasa tend to happen at her own expense, due to how ditzy and forgetful she is. Both Konata and her own sister Kagami tend to comment on how low her grades are, much to her embarrassment.
- Captain Ersatz: Of Akari Kamigishi of To Heart, at least when it comes to character designs. Lampshaded at least twice in the anime — when Konata gives her a school uniform for a birthday gift (Kagami is instantly reminded of To Heart), and when she was noticed by some otakus who take pictures of her because of the resemblance and ask her to say "Hiroyuki-chan".
- Cloudcuckoolander: Downplayed; she can come off as a bit odd sometimes (like when she remarks that strawberries smell like strawberry shortcake, forgetting that strawberry shortcake is made from strawberries), but this is more out of innocence and ditziness than actually being weird, and she's nowhere near as eccentric as Konata. There's also a minor Running Gag about her fixation on the word "balsamic vinegar", which she seems to think is an Inherently Funny Word.
- The Ditz: She's very sweet and innocent, but also airheaded, forgetful and Book Dumb; even the most mundane tasks like studying, reading a newspaper or finding her own cellphone number prove to be very challenging for her. Ironically, her issue occasionally seems to be overthinking something. Prime examples of this are in the anime's second episode, where we see that she spent more time scheduling her studying rather than actually studying, and when she was in the hurdle race of the school's sports festival and was thinking so much about Miyuki's advice on counting her steps that she slammed into every single hurdle.
- Expressive Accessory: Her yellow hair bow tends to droop when she's sad or worried, or spike up when she's shocked.
- Feminine Women Can Cook: She's more feminine than her Tsundere twin sister Kagami and Otaku Surrogate Konata, and one of the very few things she's good at is cooking.
- Foil: She often serves as this to Konata and Kagami. Highlighted in the anime when Konata asks the twins their favorite colors (white for Tsukasa, black for Kagaminote ) and when Kagami asks the other two how they reacted to a particular manga scene (Konata laughed, Tsukasa cried; however both answer "Sgt. Frog" when asked about their favorite manga, prompting Kagami to wonder: "Are you the same or different?").
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Tsukasa is the foolish to Kagami's responsible, being ditzier and more forgetful.
- Girlish Pigtails: Her switch with Kagami. Also fits her cute personality.
- Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She has her whole bed decorated with tiny stuffed plushies and has been seen sleeping with two white bear plushies on the ends of her bed.
- Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She's generally girlier than her more tomboyish and outspoken twin sister Kagami, being soft-spoken and enjoying traditionally feminine activities like sewing and cooking. However, she has much shorter hair than Kagami does and often reads shonen manga in her spare time, with her favourite being Sgt. Frog (though it's likely that she just finds the frog characters cute).
- Heavy Sleeper: She wakes up at noon, sometimes later, and still thinks it's morning until someone points it out to her.
- Idiots Cannot Catch Colds: Kagami says she always seems to be fine when everyone else is laid up, which Konata calls "inconspicuous"...
- The Ingenue: A lesser degree of this trope when compared to Yutaka below, but she is rather innocent on top of already being Book Dumb.
- Long Hair Is Feminine: Inverted; she has the shortest hair of the main four girls, but she's girlier than Kagami and Konata, who both have much longer hair.
- Meaningful Name: The four Hiiragi sisters all have Theme Naming going on with reference to the Shinto Religion. In Tsukasa's case, her name refers to shinto priests.
- Miko: She works as a part-time miko along with Kagami and their older sisters, since their father is a Shinto priest.
- Nice Girl: The official guide lists "Good Person" as her highest stat. One strip also shows that her idea of an April Fool's joke is lying about lying.
- Phoneaholic Teenager: Downplayed; while she's not completely obsessed with her cellphone, she briefly becomes addicted to texting after she gets the hang of it. It's to the point where she constantly texts Kagami (even though they're twin sisters who spend most of their time together) with at least one of her texts having an entire wall of emojis tacked to the end, and the Hiiragi household's phone bill skyrocketed because of her texting habits alone.
- Polar Opposite Twins: With Kagami, being the forgetful, Book Dumb ditz compared to her smarter and more responsible twin sister.
- Signature Headgear: She's rarely seen without her trademark yellow hair bow, which doubles as an Expressive Accessory at times.
- Shrinking Violet: She has purple hair and can be timid around strangers, so she tend to hide behind her sister.
- Sleepyhead: Classic example of the hardworking subtype.
- Tareme Eyes: To highlight her niceness and kindhearted nature, and to differentiate her from Kagami. She currently provides the page image.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly Girl to her tomboy twin, Kagami.
- Verbal Tic: "Balsamic vinegar", which she seems to consider an Inherently Funny Word.
Miyuki Takara
Voiced by: Erina Nakayama (JP [Drama CD/NDS game]), Aya Endo (JP [Anime/PS2 game]) and Karen Strassman (EN)
The "smart girl" of the main quartet and embodiment of many stereotypical Bespectacled Cutie traits, including a very polite manner of speech (even amongst her friends).
- The Ace: Konata praises her for her high grades, and Nanako Kuroi seems to make Miyuki always the class representative because, as Konata mentioned, Nanako herself has less work to do (Konata gets slammed for it). And in Konata and Hiyori's point of view, they regard all of Miyuki's faults as "Moe points".
- Affectionate Nickname: Tsukasa calls her "Yuki-chan", as opposed to Konata and Kagami who address her more formally as "Miyuki-san".
- Afraid of Doctors: Miyuki is afraid of going to the dentist, and often tries avoiding dentist appointments even when she knows she should go.
- Bespectacled Cutie: A typical smart, sweet-natured girl who wears glasses. Despite her high intelligence and various skills, her glasses give her a hint of vulnerability and cuteness, which Konata even lampshades.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Occasionally; one Volume 4 strip has Konata telling her that she and the other girls won't blindly follow orders. When she replies with a smile that she'll entertain other opinions, even Kuroi-sensei freaks out, implying she's willing to pretend to hear them out so long as ultimately she calls the shots. She's that assertive... she's just too polite to be blunt about it.
- Blind Without 'Em: Without her glasses, Miyuki has a 20/200 vision.
- Boob-Based Gag: Konata and Minami thought Miyuki, though unable to swim, can at least float because of her breasts. She even gets a cow joke from Konata at one point and wins a race solely by being able to break the ribbon earlier.
- Book Smart: She gets the highest grades out of all of the main characters, thanks to her generally good work ethic and her love of learning.
- Charm Point: Her glasses, which Konata says give her major moe points.
- Class Representative: Kept doing this, even if, personality-wise, she subverts the type. Even Konata mocks Nanako for having Miyuki as the Class Rep everytime so that she herself has less work to do.
- Cool Big Sis: To Minami. When talking to Konata about her, Miyuki downright said that she's like a little sister, and in the manga, Minami even starts to call her "onee-chan" (big sister), albeit originally by accident.
- Cute Clumsy Girl: In fact, her clumsiness is part of what makes Konata consider her so adorable. Miyuki lampshades her own clumsiness in the first episode by mentioning how she often accidentally does things like cutting herself while peeling potatoes, falling on her face while running to board a train, getting her bag stuck as the train's doors close, etc. This is because she spends so much time thinking about various things that she doesn't pay as much attention to her surroundings as she should.
- Disappeared Dad: Her dad is mentioned once or twice, but never seen in the series.
- Ditzy Genius: She gets excellent grades in school, is capable of all kinds of tasks, has a wealth of knowledge on a wide variety of subjects and often comes up with the best ideas out of the group when they're faced with a problem. However, she's also quite clumsy and prone to spacing out. The implication is that she's so busy thinking about things that she pays less attention to the world around her than she should be, leading to her clumsy moments.
- Formal Characters Use Keigo: Her Japanese speech patterns are always very polite, reflecting her wealthy upbringing. When Konata gets hooked on Marimite and starts talking like a stereotypical Ojou, Miyuki seamlessly plays along with it.
- Hot Teacher: As of manga volume 8, she's doing work as a home-tutor.
- Huge Schoolgirl: She isn't huge, but still quite tall for a Japanese girl — although she's only slightly taller than the Hiiragis and is slightly shorter than Patty. However, she spends a lot of time with the diminutive Konata, and compared to the latter she is huge.
- Informed Attractiveness: She's considered very pretty, to the point that Konata, Kagami and Tsukasa wonder why boys don't try to ask her out. In terms of design, she has the same Generic Cuteness as everyone else, with only her height and bust making her stand out.

- Moe: She's considered as this in-universe by Konata on account of her talents, adorable flaws, and her shapely figure, to the point of even deifying her.Konata: She's a walking shrine of Moe!

- Out of Focus: Towards the latter half of the anime. Lampshaded by the mangaka in the omake — which is sort of unfortunate as Yoshimizu apparently has a Bespectacled Cutie fetish.

- Pink Means Feminine: She has pink hair and quite a feminine personality as she is polite and very sweet.
- Proper Tights with a Skirt: She's very polite and proper, and she always wears tights with her uniform, even during summer.
- Rose-Haired Sweetie: She has salmon pink hair, and despite being an Ojou she's very kind.
- The Smart Girl: She tends to have the highest grades of her class, sometimes by far. Tsukasa even notes there's no way they can compete with her to see who has the highest grades. In the OVA she comes up with a way to split three biscuits among the four of them by separating the top and bottom halves, giving one to each person, then splitting the remaining two in half and distributing them evenly.
- Smart People Wear Glasses: She wears glasses and is the most intelligent of the group, having the highest grades and often knowing facts that the other three don't.
- Spoiled Sweet: She's a smart, polite, well-mannered and friendly girl who comes from a wealthy family .
- Strong Family Resemblance: She looks almost exactly like her mother, only with longer hair and glasses. What she didn't inherit from her mother, luckily, is the latter's childish ditziness. However, Miyuki also said she was forced to be more competent or else the family won't be able to function.
- Surpassed the Teacher: Much to the envy of Nanako, Kagami, Tsukasa, and Konata prefer to rely on her knowledge when they have questions about the topics she teaches in the school.
- Token Rich Student: While Minami is implied to be from a rich family as well (since she and Miyuki live on the same street), Miyuki is the only character whose wealthy background is focused on, and yet she still goes to the same public school as her middle-class friends.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's afraid of the dentist.
- Younger than She Looks: She mentions that she's sometimes mistaken for an office lady when she goes out in her casual clothes. This has become her primary annoyance and woe; her maturity compared to Yukari sometimes make her appear older than her mother.

Yutaka Kobayakawa

Konata's cousin and Yui's younger sister, who comes to live with the Izumi family after she's accepted into Konata's high school. She's a frail but cheerful girl who, like her cousin, looks much younger than she really is. Her friendship with Minami often falls into Pseudo-Romantic Friendship territory.
- Affectionate Nickname: Konata and Soujirou both call her "Yu-chan".
- Broken Bird: Averted. In Volume 4 Chapter 118, it was revealed that Yui's sisterly love helped her avert problems in social interactions resulting from the years of constantly falling ill.
- Captain Ersatz: Of Chiyo Mihama of Azumanga Daioh. This was lampshaded when she introduced herself in front of the class, and further lampshaded when she found she unwittingly shouted out to Chiyo, because "[Konata]'s geekiness is rubbing off on me!"
- Cheerful Child: She's actually a teenager, but her short height, youthful looks and innocence still makes her come across as this trope.
- Cute Clumsy Girl: Konata observed she has that same "cute shortcoming" as Miyuki.
- Cute Oversized Sleeves: She's a sweet girl who wears sleeves that often go past her hands, due to how small she is for her age.
- Cutesy Dwarf: In-universe assumption of some of her classmates towards her, which is not particularly surprising in light of her associated tropes. She isn't really comfortable about this.
- Foil: To the more dirty-minded Konata who's brash and a prankster.
- Delicate and Sickly: While she's never had any dangerous disease, her weak constitution makes her succumb to common ailments very easily. She's not happy about this, since she hates making people worry every time she gets sick and her poor health has often forced her to miss out on socializing with others.
- The Ditz: Of a much lesser magnitude compared to Tsukasa though.
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: She has moments of this, mainly because she doesn't like how frail she is. For example, in a Volume 7 strip where, hearing that Minami has been helping her to the latter's detriment in PE, she harshly asked Minami to not help in a long-distance running match.
- Family Theme Naming: She and her older sister's names both start with "Yu".
- Gender-Blender Name: "Yutaka" is technically a unisex name, but it's given much more often to boys than to girls.
- Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in short pigtails, which highlight her cute and innocent personality.
- Height Angst: She's not happy about how short she is for her age, and since her cousin Konata is similarly short, she laments that she doesn't have much hope of growing any taller.
- I Just Want to Be Normal: She has streaks of this, which acts as a deconstruction of some of her tropes — her growth deficiencies and poor health, considered as her major Charm Points, clearly brought her social issues and she clearly likes neither. Also see Don't You Dare Pity Me!.

Minami Iwasaki

Entering the story by returning Yutaka's handkerchief in the beginning of what can be seen as a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship, Minami is a quiet, expressionless girl often misunderstood by others to be creepy. Good at most subjects, and is childhood friends with neighbour Miyuki since both of them love reading.
- A-Cup Angst: She is completely flat-chested — at least Konata and Yutaka have very small ones. Her angsting over this is close to Once an Episode frequency.
- Badass Bookworm: Has the tendency in unanimated manga, coupled with her Chronic Hero Syndrome.
- Bifauxnen: Despite being short-haired, flat-chested and taller than most of her friends, she doesn't normally qualify for this trope until Episode 24, when Hiyori has her dress up in a princely outfit for their homeroom's Takarazuka-themed cafe for the cultural festival.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: She appears to always be ready to help people.
- Hidden Eyes: Happens often when she gets into an embarrasing situation.
- Huge Schoolgirl: At 163cm, she's not that tall. The assumption, however, frequently stems from her association with the extremely diminutive Yutaka.

- The Quiet One: Part of what makes the class consider her somewhat creepy is how quiet she usually is.
- Rei Ayanami Expy: An Affectionate Parody and subverted. Minami is a young girl with short mint green hair and blue eyes who is considered creepy by her peers because of her reserved personality. It turns out she's just a regular Shrinking Violet whose shyness is frequently mistaken for her being eerie, and the most angst she has is over her flat chest.
- Secretly Wealthy: Implied. She lives in the same block as Miyuki.
- Shrinking Violet: She may seem aloof and intimidating, but she's really very shy and awkward around others.
- Tsurime Eyes: Subverted. Minami's almond-shaped eyes are one of the characteristics that make her come off as an intimidating character. Her personality is really shy and meek.
Hiyori Tamura

Yutaka and Minami's classmate, member of the Animation Research Club, and a budding doujinshi yonkoma artist with a habit of shipping anime and game characters, as well as her friends Minami and Yutaka.
- Affectionate Nickname: Konata and Patty sometimes refer to her as "Hiyorin".
- Ambiguously Bi: Her frequent fantasies about her friends indicate this or an overactive imagination. There's also the fact that she's both a Yaoi Fangirl and a Yuri Fan (though there's more emphasis on the latter).
- Animals Hate Him: Or at least Minami's dog. She has a dog herself, so this is a subversion.
- Blue with Shock: Her reaction when Yutaka asks her what yaoi means.
- The Chew Toy: Almost as if Yoshimizu is punishing her for her perversions, she is the regular victim of Amusing Injuries, Freudian Slips, accidents and other misfortunes.
- Covert Pervert: Draws erotic manga and fantasizes about her friends in romantic situations rather more than is probably healthy, much to her own consternation. Though given what a rotten job she does of hiding it, "covert" is debatable.
- Freudian Slip: At one point she mistook dodgeball positions as Seme and Uke. Language note: Attacker at dodgeball is still seme; it was uke that she made the slip — the correct term is mamori.

- Strips in Volume 4/5 show her making different yaoi/yuri fantasies about Setsubun, not to mention another about Konata kissing Miyuki, after the former said that tooth decay can be transmitted by kissing.
- Another notable one is when Izumi begs Yutaka not to reveal her geek identity. Hiyori proceeds to imagine how a less-than-honorable guy would stereotypically react in Yutaka's place. Izumi notices Hiyori's reaction.
- Joshikousei: One of her Image Songs revolves around this.
- Nerd Glasses: She wears large, round glasses and is almost as much of an otaku as Konata, particularly when it comes to drawing doujinshi.
- Otaku: While she's not quite as fanatical about it as Konata, she's definitely an otaku herself, as she loves anime and video games and draws doujinshi that she sells at Comiket.

- Yaoi Fangirl: She draws both yaoi and yuri doujinshi, sometimes leading to embarassment when her manga is brought up. Though there's more focus on her Yuri Fan tendencies, she does use the terms "seme" and "uke" when describing positions in dodgeball and is mortified when she realizes what she just said.
- Yuri Fan: She draws yuri doujinshi and often has Imagine Spots where she ships Minami and Yutaka together, much to her own embarassment.
Patricia "Patty" Martin

American Otaku in Yutaka's class, and the most genki of otakus of this series.
- Affectionate Parody: Of American otaku.
- Anime Accent Absence: Completely absent in the anime, only absent in hobby-related things in the manga. The dub version has a slight twang compared to her Japanese schoolmates.
- Ascended Extra: Patty is an omake-only character in the early manga, only to be ascended to the main manga chapters later. Averted in the anime, where she's introduced in Episode 16 and remains prominent through to the end.
- Bubbly Waitress: She's generally cheerful and upbeat, and she works at the same Cosplay Café as Konata while still retaining her cheerful demeanor.
- Foreign Exchange Student: She's an American exchange student and otaku who came to Japan to learn Japanese culture. However, most of what she knows about Japan is based on manga and anime, which doesn't always match the reality.
- Funny Foreigner: She's an American exchange student who's also a big anime fan, and much of the humor surrounding her relates to how skewed her ideas of Japan are thanks to all the anime and manga she's consumed, essentially viewing Japan as an Animeland. Konata and Hiyori, her fellow anime fans, do very little to discourage her views.
- Genki Girl: Incredibly energetic and willing to participate it anything fun.
- Gorgeous Gaijin: She's an American, and has the second largest breast size of the entire cast.
- Huge Schoolgirl: She's around average height for an American schoolgirl, but she's living in Japan where people are naturally shorter, and many of her friends are small even by Japanese standards.
- Occidental Otaku: She's an American girl who's also a big anime fan, and her knowledge of Japanese culture seemed to be limited to anime.
- Phenotype Stereotype: She's blonde and fits many traits of a stereotypical blonde.
- Proud to Be a Geek: She's very open about being an Occidental Otaku, claiming that otaku are the pride of Japanese culture and that she wants to absorb everything she can about otaku culture and take it back with her to America so she can distribute it to the people. Who else would openly say she wants to have a Meido — not a housekeeper — in front of Kagami, of all people?
- Retcon: In the manga, she made a few appearance in the omakes and was already known by everybody in the cast. Come Vol.7, she is introduced at the main storyline as a new face among the cast.
- Token White: Being the caucasian American exchange student in a Japanese school.
- Yaoi Fangirl: She said she is one, but we have yet to see more evidence of that.
Misao Kusakabe

Kagami and Ayano's classmate for five consecutive years, Misao is the latter's childhood friend and, as defined by the former, an unorganized "lazy ass". A recurring theme in post-anime strips is her rivalry with Konata — for Kagami, even Misao considered Kagami as being cold-hearted.
- Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair went from black to brown.
- Cute Little Fangs: Not only do they look adorable, they complement her tomboyish image.
- Dumb Is Good: Quite evident when we compare her and Kagami's gaming style.
- Technician Versus Performer: In Episode 23, Misao is revealed to be the Performer to Kagami's Technician, as Misao plays games for fun, while Kagami plays them to score high.
- Tomboy: She's pretty much the stereotypical tomboy of the show and written to represent that; she has short hair, prefers outdoor activities over studying, and doesn't wear skirts or dresses outside of school.

Ayano Minegishi

Misao's "caretaker" (in Kagami's words) for years to the level that when Kagami was fed up with Misao or vice versa, Ayano is their go-between. She is the only teen in the series with a boyfriend.
- Berserk Button: Misao experienced this hidden side of Ayano when she spilled coffee on her stuffed raccoon in the manga, though we never got to see the full extent of Ayano's anger...
- Beware the Nice Ones: In the manga, she has a very scary moment of this after Misao dream-talked about... something sexy between Ayano and Misao's brother. While Misao does lampshade her status as this in episode 23 of the anime, it comes off as an Informed Attribute since she never actually shows her scarier side.Misao (in the English dub): She may act all sweet and mellow, but if you piss her off she'll cut you, man.
- The Caretaker: Very nurturing and motherly around her friends, particularly Misao.
- Demoted to Extra: She's one of the girls who have barely any lines in the OVA.
- Feminine Women Can Cook: She's very feminine and quite skilled at cooking and baking. However, her family runs a cooking school, so there may be non-gender-role justification.

First appearing in Volume 4, Kō is the president of the Animation Research Club and Hiyori's "boss" on the club's periodicals. She's the only 11th grader in the series. Does not appear in the anime, but she did appear in the Net Idol Meister video game.
- Challenge Gamer: One of the running joke about her is her trying to beat Konata on arcade fighting games.
- Gamer Chick: Her otaku tendencies are mainly in gaming and less on manga — that doesn't mean she does not care about manga anyway.
- Unknown Rival: To Konata, on arcade fighting games.
Yamato Nagamori

While she doesn't appear often in the manga, she gets introduced with Ko often. She's a close friend of Kō, and in the visual novels gets possessed by an alien at one point and even has some leftover powers remaining.
Izumi Wakase

Class Representative of Hiyori's class who appears in Volume 7. She is also an otaku, but tries to hide it as she is an upper-class girl who is class president. However, she runs into Hiyori on one of her shopping trips to Comiket, who discovers her secret. She is good at home economics, but is bad at art. She likes "cute" things and likes sweets, as well as coffee and milk.
- Book Dumb: Izumi completely flounders academically. At one point she even filled in the same letter for every question on a multiple choice test and still got them all wrong.
- Class Representative: Grades aside, she's a model student who as class rep keeps her fellow students on track and is very attuned to their needs. She personally carried Hiyori to the nurse's office after being the only one to notice she was having a fainting spell.
- Closet Geek: Unlike the other otaku characters, who are very open about their hobbies, she tries to hide her otaku interests and freaks out whenever she thinks she's been discovered.
- Something Only They Would Say: Konata first found out Izumi's an otaku after she overheard Izumi using the term "twintails" when most normal people would say "pigtails".
Tamaki Yamanobe
Another girl who appears in Volume 7, and another member of the Animation Research Club.

Konata, Tsukasa and Miyuki's homeroom teacher, and world history teacher for all the seniors. Has lots of free time to play video games and watch baseball games. Still believes in the power of corporal punishment.
- Accent Adaptation: In the English dub, her inexplicable Kansai dialect is reflected by Kate Higgins giving her voice a slight Southern twang.
- Corporal Punishment: Frequently delivers rather aggressive Dope Slaps to Vitriolic Best Bud Konata. For example, when Konata commented that Miyuki is always selected as Class Representative as an excuse so that Nanako herself would have less work to do.
- Cute Little Fangs: She has a visible fang whenever she opens her mouth, which fits with her fun-loving personality.
- Gamer Chick: She's in the same party in the MMORPG Konata also plays. As a matter of fact, she is probably the #2 gamer chick in the series.
- Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Downplayed since she's not often shown doing it, but she's fond of drinking as a part of her Work Hard, Play Hard attitude. In episode 6 of the anime, she even has a Beergasm that almost perfectly imitates Misato Katsuragi's famous beergasm frame-for-frame.
- Hot Teacher: A beautiful young teacher with Cute Little Fangs and a fun-loving personality. Though she's, to her dismay, still single.
- Must Have Lots of Free Time: Seems like Miyuki instead does most of the work as Class Representative. Konata wonders if that's the reason that she's still single; she didn't have that much of a social life.
- No Sense of Direction: During the Beach Episode, she frequently makes wrong turns when trying to get to the beach, at one point even ending up in the middle of a soccer field.
- Old Maid: She's 27 years old and is secretly rather insecure about still being single. She incorrectly assumes that Yui is also single, even though Yui is actually Happily Married, and attempts to bond with her over it.
- One of the Kids: Just because she's a young woman doesn't mean she's much more mature or less fun-loving than her students. She's also in the same party as Konata in the MMORPG they both play (though she'll still remind Konata to study even when they're both online), and in the OVA she plays alongside the Hiiragi twins as well.
- Parental Hypocrisy: She plays the same online game as Konata, and has been into MMORPG's since before she was Konata's age, but she tells Konata off for doing that very thing, and uses in-game chat to remind her to do her homework. When Konata calls her out on this, she remarks that, as a teacher, she has a duty to uphold, which Konata accepts as understandable, but still...
- Sensei-chan: A teacher who's young, attractive, secretly insecure about still being single, close to her students (especially Konata, with whom she often plays MMORPGs), and sometimes not much more mature than her students are (though she is at least wise enough to not sacrifice sleep for gaming time).
- Stern Teacher: She takes her duties as a teacher seriously, which is exemplified by her relationship with Konata, her most problematic student; she's always quick to chastise the small otaku for various misdemeanors such as being late, making up lame excuses, falling asleep in class or playing an MMO instead of studying and/or resting during schooldays, sometimes using corporal punishment to set her straight. Despite this, she does care about her students getting a good education and is generally on friendly terms with the main characters, even with Konata.
- Tomboy: Grown up version who's pretty manly for a woman. She has her hair in a low ponytail, wears pants more often than skirts, and is a major Gamer Chick and a big fan of professional baseball.
- Unexplained Accent: She speaks with a Kansai dialect (which the English dub reflects by giving her a slight Southern accent), despite not actually being from the Kansai region and the series taking place in a Tokyo suburb. In the manga, it's implied that she fakes the accent for unknown reasons.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: She has this relationship with her troublesome student Konata. She is constantly frustrated by Konata's slacker habits and harshly reprimands her whenever she falls asleep in class, neglects her homework or plays around instead of studying or waking up early, yet outside class she is friendly with her, sharing various hobbies with her and being in the same MMORPG party.
- Work Hard, Play Hard: Yes, in class she seems to be strict and always dope-slapping Konata for irresponsibility. Yet she is also a Konata-level Gamer Chick.
- Would Hurt a Child: She's not above slapping her students or smacking them in the head for falling asleep, with her admitting it with utter joy. This is surprisingly Played for Laughs. She's lucky that her students think she's amazing for that, instead of reporting her by filling a complaint for child abuse.
Yui Narumi

Konata's cousin and Yutaka's older sister. She works as a traffic cop, but even Konata wonders how can she keep at that position, considering how fun-loving and goofy she is. Despite her flightiness, she shows real care towards her younger sister. Has an offscreen husband.
- Berserk Button: Only pass her while she's behind the wheel if you're prepared for an Initial D-like race.
- Bespectacled Cutie: A cute, kind and fun-loving young woman with glasses.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: You usually don't want your police officers to be nonsensical goofballs. This is frequently lampshaded by Konata, who often wonders how Yui has managed to keep her job with a personality like hers.
- Drives Like Crazy: Her driving skills are truly awe-inspiring, and she does it while still driving under the limit.
- Family Theme Naming: She and her younger sister Yutaka's names both start with "Yu".
- Genki Girl: So much so that even her default method of entering a room is slamming the door open, flailing her arms about and happily and loudly announcing herself.
- Happily Married: Her husband is almost always out of town for work, but she loves him very much and is always delighted when she learns he's coming home.
- Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Usually crashes at the Izumi household when she's too drunk to drive home.

- Idiot Hair: While it doesn't stand out as much as Konata's, she still has a strand of hair that always sticks up. It fits with her goofy, flighty personality.
- Long-Distance Relationship: She is in a commuter marriage with her husband, who's almost always out of town for work; in the anime, her husband never appears in person and is only ever heard once over the phone. Because of this, Nanako assumes that Yui is single like she is and attempts to bond with her over it.
- One of the Kids: Cheerful, energetic, and despite being a young woman, sometimes less mature than her teenage sister and cousin. She often comes over to hang out with Konata, and the only other adults she ever interacts with are Nanako and Soujirou.
- Playful Cat Smile: Her default expression, to go with her energetic and playful personality.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: With Yutaka. She's outgoing and full of energy, while Yutaka is calmer and doesn't have much stamina due to being Delicate and Sickly.
Soujirou Izumi

Konata's father and fellow otaku. Works as a freelance writer at home but surprisingly, he writes more serious, completely non-otaku topics. He raised his young daughter on his own after the death of his wife Kanata.
- Audience Surrogate: For the older male readers/audience, being a huge Otaku who's also very into cute young girls (to the point of being a Comedic Lolicon).
- Bumbling Dad: He's certainly not stupid or lazy, yet the entire Izumi-Kobayakawa household thinks so.
- Cassandra Truth: Nobody believes that he is actually a hardworking writer who can write wholesome, non-otaku-related topics, has quite a bit of book smarts, has had a relationship with Kanata that was far beyond comedic lolicon, so on and so forth.
- Childhood Friend Romance: With Kanata.
- Comedic Lolicon:
- He buys H-Games for his underage daughter, takes pictures of nubile girls at other schools' sports festivals, and the opening theme shows him watching a pair of schoolgirls while hiding behind a pole. Konata frequently gets fed up with this and fears for his arrest, even though he's portrayed as mostly harmless otherwise.
- In later volumes of the manga this aspect of his gets subdued. One Volume 7 strip has Yutaka catching him looking between the legs of figurines — which horrified the innocent girl to no end. This ends up becoming a running gag.
- Demoted to Extra: Didn't appear in the OVA.
- Doting Parent: Someone's got to give the guy credit for being an attentive and loving father who raised a happy and emotionally well-adjusted daughter to adulthood... eccentricities notwithstanding.
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: He's not exactly "huge" per se, it's just his wife that was so short he towered above her.
- Kimono Is Traditional: He typically wears a kimono and a haori, which references the Japanese stereotype of writers only ever wearing traditional clothing.
- Meaningful Appearance: He has a mole near the outer corner of his left eye. Such a mark customarily symbolizes sadness, which is appropriate for him; he really misses his late wife Kanata.
- Nice Guy: Despite his eccentricities and sometimes-unhealthy levels of indulgence in his hobbies, he's overall a kindhearted man who loves his family.
- Otaku: He's hugely into anime, manga and video games. Konata clearly inherited many of her own nerdy interests from him.
- Perma-Stubble: He has some noticeable stubble on his chin that he's never seen without, aside from flashbacks to when he was more clean-shaven.
- Pervert Dad: With the bulk of his perviness oriented towards young girls, especially his daughter and younger niece. Konata puts up with most of his clinginess towards her, though she's quick to call him out whenever he makes perverted comments.
- Proud to Be a Geek: Like Konata, he has absolutely no shame about his otaku hobbies and interests. He's especially proud of having watched every single Gundam series since the franchise first started.
- Younger Than He Looks: Even as a teenager he looked way older than Kanata, who turns out to be a bit older than him.

- Meaningful Name: The four Hiiragi sisters all have Theme Naming going on with reference to the Shinto Religion. In Inori's case, her name literally means "prayer" in the sense of "an entreaty to the gods".
- Miko: She works as a part-time miko along with her sisters. In episode 2, it's mentioned that she was helping her father with a ground-breaking ceremony.
- The "Mom" Voice: When Matsuri, Kagami and Tsukasa's older sister, unfairly tears into the twins for not picking up some ingredients she wanted for dinner, Kagami storms out of the house to grab the stuff. The eldest sister, Inori, looks at Matsuri and pulls a "Mom" voice, scolding the middle child by saying, "Well, you could have handled that better!" Matsuri can only shamefully agree.
Matsuri Hiiragi

The second eldest of the Hiiragi sisters.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While both she and Kagami verbally spat multiple times during the time she made paella, Matsuri also made sure to give Kagami credit for buying the ingredients when their parents praised Matsuri for making it.
- Meaningful Name: The four Hiiragi sisters all have Theme Naming going on with reference to the Shinto Religion. In Matsuri's case, her name refers to festivals, many of which were originally celebrated in honor of Shinto kami.
- Miko: She works as a part-time miko along with her sisters.
Meito "Anime Tenchou" Anisawa
Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki (JP) and Lex Lang (EN)
An anime-only character, he is the manager of the Animate store Konata frequents. He reveres Konata as "Legendary Girl A", and frequently tries (and fails) to get her to buy merchandise from his store.
He is actually the mascot for the Animate chain as Captain Animate, created by Shimamoto Kazuhiko in the late 90s; but the one who made him known in Japan was none other than Hideaki Anno who directed a short Original Video Animation for the character, a Radio Show was also made. Anisawa was made to help boost the sales and pick interest of the general public into buying anime merchandise, not just for Animate stores.
- Ass Kicking Pose: Episode 12, when he lectured a salesman about the value of leftover merchandise.
- Berserk Button: Never insult anime merchandise featuring side characters or he will punch you in the face.
- Crossover: Anisawa actually predates Lucky Star; he was Animate's mascot for some time before, and thus his appearances in the anime count as this. While he's best remembered for being in Lucky Star, he's gone on to make cameos in other works as well:
- He made a cameo appearance in the first season of Hayate the Combat Butler.
- He also has a cameo in Disgaea 4 of all places.
- As well as during the credits for Hetalia World Series: Fantasia.
- Failure Is the Only Option: Trying to get "Legendary Girl A" to buy one thing proves about as successful as Wile E. Coyote getting the Road Runner to stand still, let alone eat it.
- Hot-Blooded: To a ridiculous extent, though it's not hard to imagine why. His every appearance is typically accompanied by spontaneous combustion.
- Large Ham: He takes his job really seriously, especially when Legendary Girl A (Konata) is involved.
- Manly Tears: When he finally gets Konata to pick up an item, he sheds these. Then he lets out the best scream ever when she puts it back.
- Mundane Made Awesome: Every attempt at selling something to "Legendary Girl A" (AKA Konata).
- Non-Standard Character Design: Since he was created long before Lucky Star existed, he and his store's staff are all drawn in Kazuhiko Shimamoto's art style and have a different color palette from the rest of the characters.
- Product Placement: He's not a character original to the series, but the mascot of Animate, a chain of stores selling anime and manga-related goods. The Animate chain does have commercial links with this series, judging from the existence of some of its strips from its in-store magazine.
- Punny Name: His real name in Japanese order is Anisawa Meito. Take the first part of his family name and his given name, put it together and you get Animeito, as in Animate, the chain of stores he's the mascot for.
- Shout-Out: In one episode, he pulls a freaking Geass from out of nowhere. Lelouch's Geass. He uses it on Konata to get her to finally buy something in his store... only for it to turn out that she doesn't have enough money.
- Transplant: He isn't from the manga nor original to the anime, and in fact predates the series as a whole.

Omake, a "What If? Soujiro was Miyuki's father" strip showed Yukari sneaking up on him with a hammer and a very disturbing expression after he fondled Miyuki... - Cloudcuckoolander: She once talked with a telemarketer for over an hour. Out of boredom.
- Cute Clumsy Girl: Like mother, like daughter.
- The Ditz: Perhaps even more than Tsukasa: the manga's character sketch for Yukari stated that she was "good at nothing," whereas Tsukasa at least is an excellent cook.

Konata's late mother, whom Konata inherited most of her looks from. Despite a bit wary about Soujirou's comedic lolicon tendencies, she still considers him to be actually caring for her — something nobody else will associate with Soujirou.
- Ascended Extra: Although we know her name and how she looked by Volume 2 of the manga, she was only substantially characterized in the anime.
- Childhood Friend Romance: She and Soujirou were childhood friends.
- Cute Ghost Girl: Any of her present-day appearances has her as this or as an angel.
- Delicate and Sickly: According to Sojirou, Kanata was a very weak person when she was alive, much like her niece Yutaka. She passed away from an unknown illness when Konata was still very young.
- Died Happily Ever After: She is revealed to occasionally return as a ghost to check on her family with her presence being for the most unknown.
- Fun Size: Konata inherited her tiny height, much to her dismay.
- Girly Girl: During her lifetime, she was shown wearing feminine dresses, gets interested in cooking for her husband and wanting to become a mother.
- Happily Married: Despite their differences, she had a nice relationship with Soujiro until she passed away.
- Height Angst: It's implied that she had this during her lifetime, since during a flashback to when Konata was born, she openly states to Soujiro that she doesn't want Konata to inherit her short height.
- Housewife: Acted as a one when she was alive and became independent with her partner, cooking for Soujiro and doing the chores of the house while he was working writing his novels on a computer.
- Mum Looks Like a Sister: The Hiiragi twins mistook one of her photo's appearances, believing she was a younger Konata.
- No Accounting for Taste: At least Konata thought so in choosing her father.
- Older Than They Look: Something Konata inherited from her; she's always looked very youthful, to the point that when Kagami sees an old photo of Kanata with Soujirou, she mistakes Kanata for her own daughter. She's one reason Konata starts to wonder if Soujirou is a comedic lolicon. Ironically, she turns out to be slightly older than Soujirou.
- Posthumous Character: She passed away long before the story takes place, though her spirit appears in one episode.
- Punny Name: Kanata means "there". Now think about the translation of her Image Song.
- Spooky Photographs: She unintentionally caused one of these while trying to get a family picture with her husband and daughter. The sight of her ghostly figure in the photo causes Konata and Soujirou to freak out.
- Strong Family Resemblance: It's pretty obvious where Konata got her looks from. Kagami actually mistook an old photo of her for Konata.
- Unlimited Wardrobe: Despite only appearing in one episode, she can be seen wearing various outfits during her lifetime.

- Girlish Pigtails: Despite being an adult, she wears her hair in short pigtails similar to Yutaka's.
- Labcoat of Science and Medicine: She's the school's biology teacher, and she frequently wears a labcoat.

- Meaningful Name: Her name means "in the sun". Her sister's name means "shade".
- Money Dumb: She frequently spends her paycheck on otaku merchandise instead of more essential things, which is the main reason why she and her sister are in poverty.
- Nerd Glasses: Wears a small pair of glasses, and she's largely defined by being a huge otaku.
- Otaku: She works at an Animate store, and she's already a huge fan of anime, manga and games. Unfortunately, she has poor impulse control when it comes to buying otaku merchandise, which is why she and her sister struggle with poverty.

When the bean sprouts became unavailable due to a TV special advertising them as being good for the health, she got mad at her own teacher due to him telling her that he recently ate some with pork belly after being influenced by the special.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: In contrast to her older sister, who has poor impulse control when it comes to buying anime merchandise, Hikage is often seen up giving up her material desires and making an effort to manage the economics of the apartment they're living.
- Gave Up Too Soon: When playing lottery, Hikage tries to play different numbers instead of the ones she usually is allowed to play, or is forced to give it up due to her lack of funds. Unfortunately for her, those numbers are winning ones.
- Mature Younger Sibling: She is a nine-year-old girl who is economically responsible and avoids wasting money by giving up her desires to survive in poverty in contrast to her older sister, an otaku girl who spends the majority of her paycheck in otaku stuff and is the main reason why the duo is struggling in poverty.

- Perpetual Poverty: On account of her older sister's excessive manga/doujinshi binges.

The first time she tried a burger, she attempted to take advantage of a promotion by claiming it wasn't delicious and get a refund, but found herself unable to lie due to finding the burger very delicious.

An Idol Singer in the Lucky Star universe and "navigator" of Lucky Channel. She's fourteen — younger than most of the cast — but has eleven years of acting experience. In Comptiq, she's the face of the magazine's reader column, where her name would be used to reply to readers' mail.
- Adaptational Jerkass: Akira is not a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing (or at least not nearly as much) in the original manga, but the anime portrays her as a cynical jerk with hardly any redeeming qualities besides her cute looks.
- Berserk Button: Anything that threatens to steal her spotlight or jeopardize her popularity as an idol can easily set her off.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She puts on an act of being happy and adorable for her fans, but she's really a cynical Jerkass.
- Character Exaggeration: The beginning of the anime centers her more on the joke of being an adolescent White-Dwarf Starlet (that is, the humor of a cute 14-year-old idol acting like a jaded veteran of the industry), and so while she's still surly she tends to be rather calm and subdued. At first her segments are more centered on her giving jaded, resigned rants about her career (and the occasional good, if bitter, advice) while Minoru looks on in confusion, rather than outright hostility. However, the Comedic Sociopathy in her relationship with Minoru quickly takes over the segment, and she becomes increasingly explosive and cruel until her tendency to snap on a moment's notice become the segment's primary joke. It's implied that she becomes more temperamental because she's jealous of Minoru getting more appearances in the main show than her.
- Curse Cut Short: In the dub of episode 16, she cuts herself off when she's about to swear during a furious rant but then immediately starts singing like she's supposed to.Akira: I'M A PROFESSIONAL YOU FU-
- Cute and Psycho: She's adorable and she knows it, but her real personality is a cynical Jerkass and she eventually becomes outright abusive towards Shiraishi. It's a bad idea to piss her off, too, unless you really want her "psycho" side to come out.
- Cute Oversized Sleeves: She wears "cute" oversized sleeves as part of her Deliberately Cute Child persona, although she's really a total bitch in the anime.
- Deliberately Cute Child: She knows she's a cute young girl, and has been using that to her advantage to gain viewers ever since she was four.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: At least, from her point of view. A Running Gag in Lucky Channel is her increasingly desperate desire to get a role in the main Lucky Star show, which she thinks she's entitled to because she's a popular idol. Every attempt fails, for which she's quick to blame the producers and Minoru (who gets more appearances than her), even though it's implied that the reason she gets no appearances is because nobody can stand her.
- Evil Sounds Deep: While calling her "evil" may be a stretch, she's easily the meanest character in the anime. She pretends to be a cute, cheerful girl with a high-pitched voice for her fans, but as soon as something angers her, she reverts to her borderline psychotic, abusive real self with a husky contralto. This is implied to be an effect of her chain-smoking (yes, at the tender age of fourteen), as in a blink-or-you'll-miss-it moment, she chucks an ashtray full of cigarette butts at Minoru's head.
- The Fake Cutie: Appearance-wise, she's adorable and is good at acting the part, but this is all a calculated act to gain fans and she's really more of a cynical, dried-up entertainer who takes out her frustrations on Shiraishi.
- Financial Abuse: Implied in the anime. She did mention that her mother did have some very nice purses, some of which weren't there the previous day...
- Genki Girl: Subverted; she often acts cheerful and full of energy, but it's just part of her on-screen persona. Her real personality is much more surly and cynical, though she's also prone to angry outbursts if her Berserk Buttons are pushed.
- Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: Or at least Jerkass Eyes. She has big, round Tareme Eyes when she's putting on her cutesy Genki Girl act, but her eyes become smaller and beadier when she's showing her true personality as a cynical jerk. She has a tendency to switch back and forth several times in a given episode.
- Green-Eyed Monster: As the anime goes on, Shiraishi gets more and more lines and appearances in the main show. This frustrates Akira to no end since she can never get any actual appearances on the show herself, so she takes out her anger on Shiraishi more often.
- Hates the Job, Loves the Limelight: Her real personality in the anime; beneath her cute facade, she has the attitude of a dried-up entertainer who's very cynical about her job and show business in general. Despite her cynicism, she still loves the attention she gets as an idol and admits that she wouldn't be where she is today without her otaku fanbase.
- Idol Singer: She's a professional idol, though we don't see her do any idol work aside from her "live concert" in episode 16 (which is really just her singing karaoke, much to her chagrin). Her cynical and two-faced personality is likely a Take That! to how an idol's popularity is constantly threatened by the next cutest thing on the block.
- Improbable Age: Repeat: she's a fourteen-year old Idol Singer with eleven years of experience in the media.
- It's All About Me: In the anime, she really only cares about herself and her career. Even her advice towards Shiraishi in early episodes comes off more as her rubbing in how much more experienced she is in the entertainment industry, rather than actually trying to help him.
- Laser-Guided Karma: One of the punchlines in her aforementioned quest to get a role on Lucky Star. The one time she does get a planned appearance, the episode before has her acting even nastier than usual to Minoru in an attempt to rub it in his face. The next episode reveals that she inexplicably caught the flu right before the show and didn't appear in person (as usual), and to add insult to injury they easily replaced her with a cardboard standee.
- Mood-Swinger: Played with. Her actual mood doesn't really change, but Akira's insanely good at going into character the moment she needs to: she can snap into the cutesy idol act instantly, no matter what she was doing or whether she was in the middle of a furious rant a literal split second earlier. Her sheer unpredictability—even if she's just acting—makes for her biggest Running Gag.
- Nice Character, Mean Actor: This should be obvious considering how she's also a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing and The Fake Cutie; when hosting the Lucky Channel segments, she acts like an adorable Genki Girl who's very enthusiastic about greeting the audience, but in reality she's a Jerkass who's very cynical about her job.
- The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: She's supposedly an Idol Singer and talks quite a bit about her career, but she's never actually seen doing any of it. In the anime, she doesn't even get to actually perform onscreen aside from singing karaoke in episode 16, which was all the staff of Lucky Channel could afford. In the last episode she finally gets a chance to perform in the main show, only for Shiraishi to cut her off since it was just a "mic check".
- Playful Cat Smile: She has one whenever she's playing up her adorable Genki Girl persona, but it disappears when she shows her true colours.
- Professional Voice Dissonance: In the anime, she affects a cute, high-pitched voice when hosting the Lucky Channel segments, which is meant to sell her image as a cutesy Idol Singer. Whenever she gets annoyed or angry, however, she breaks character and starts speaking in a husky contralto, showing how she's really a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who's very cynical about the entertainment industry despite loving the attention she gets.
- Psycho Pink: Played for Laughs, as she's a pink-haired Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who shows her true colors (no pun intended) whenever something angers or annoys her.
- Rose-Haired Sweetie: Subverted; she has pink hair and seems to fit the "cheery and optimistic" subtype at first, but her real personality isn't sweet at all.
- White-Dwarf Starlet: In the anime, it's strongly implied that she's on the brink of being a has-been; in the manga universe she's still at the peak of her career.
Minoru Shiraishi

Minoru Shiraishi is not only an actor, voice actor, singer, songwriter and radio personality in real life, but an anime-exclusive character with two roles: a random student in Konata's class, and Akira's henpecked assistant in Lucky Channel.
- Ascended Meme: "Wa-wa-wa-wasuremono~" Upgraded to an ending in Episode 13, and a full song when the album came out.
- Beleaguered Assistant: He's meant to be Akira's assistant in hosting Lucky Channel, but many of the Lucky Channel segments consist of him being berated and belittled by Akira, who drops her cute facade whenever he accidentally says something that annoys her.
- Beware the Nice Ones: He earnestly tries to do his best as Akira's assistant on the show and takes an astounding nineteen episodes' worth of physical and emotional abuse from her, but when he finally snaps, the results are epic.
- Butt-Monkey: The poor guy gets a lot of abuse from Akira, to the point that he eventually reaches his Rage Breaking Point following the Mount Fuji incident.
- Canon Foreigner: He's a character who's exclusive to the anime adaptation, which isn't surprising considering how he's meant to be an animated version of his voice actor.
- Character as Himself: That's Minoru Shiraishi playing Minoru Shiraishi.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: He's abused pretty badly throughout the run of Lucky Channel, until he snaps...
- The Dog Bites Back: His epic breakdown in Episode 21's Lucky Channel for being ditched at Mount Fuji back in episode 19, only for Akira to complain about the water he worked so hard to get for her.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: In-Universe — he notes how his popularity is beginning to far outstrip Akira's. In Episode 8's Lucky Channel he even boasts his own fan letters.
- Eyes Always Shut: His eyes are almost always closed. They only open when he's surprised, and when he finally snaps in episode 21. He also opens them a few times in the final episode, where his eyes suddenly become green.
- Image Song: "Koi no Minoru Densetsu", which is a parody of "Koi no Mikuru Densetsu" from Haruhi Suzumiya.
- In-Universe Nickname: In the main show, Konata nicknames him "Sebastian" as a reference to Maria Watches Over Us.
- Ink-Suit Actor: The resemblance between Minoru and Minoru is quite notable.
- Rage Breaking Point: He puts up with 19 straight episodes of abuse from Akira until the Mount Fuji incident. After being forced to get water for Akira with the producer and director's help, he's left for dead by them all and replaced until he suddenly comes back with water in hand all by himself. She proceeds to spit it out and complain how it's too warm, and it's only then when he finally snaps.
- Something We Forgot: After being forced to go to Mount Fuji to get water with the producer and director in ep 19, episode 20 reveals that they ditched him and left him for dead, having replaced him with Daisuke Ono. He comes back worse for wear with the water that Akira asked for in episode 21, who proceeds to spit it out and complain about it. It's then when he finally snaps.
Daisuke Ono
Voiced by: Himself (JP) and Johnny Yong Bosch (EN)
Daisuke Ono is a voice actor and singer in real life. In episodes 20 and 21, he replaces Minoru as Akira's assistant in Lucky Channel.
- Actor Allusion: In this anime, he looks and acts rather a lot like Itsuki Koizumi from Haruhi Suzumiya, who he also voices.
- Adam Westing: Since he was known for playing suave Bishōnen characters at the time the anime aired (though he's branched out more since then), he voices a version of himself who's over-exaggeratedly pretty and constantly carries a rose around. He's also rather dismissive of Shiraishi due to being a more successful voice actor than the latter.
- Ink-Suit Actor: Like Shiraishi, the similarities between Daisuke and Daisuke is undeniable.
- Something about a Rose: He carries a rose around for no apparent reason.
- Yes-Man: To Akira, though unlike Minoru, he doesn't particularly seem scared of her.
Yuko Goto
Voiced by: Herself (JP) and Megan Hollingshead (EN)
Yūko Gotō is an actress, voice actress and singer in real life. In episode 23, she comes in to break up Minoru and Akira's fight.
- Adam Westing: In real life, Goto is known for her enthusiasm about motorcycles and has made clear that she doesn't like being treated as a Nice Girl just because she's good at voicing them. Here, she's a straight-up delinquent.
- Ink-Suit Actor: Like Daisuke Ono.
