The main villain of the series and the leader of the Dark Army. Vearn is an extremely ancient demon lord with the aspiration of destroying the land of the human world, for which he resurrected Hadlar and gathered a strong army. Vearn is a cruel Dark Lord who treats his own subordinates, with a couple of exceptions, as mere objects and considers the humans weak and insignificant, which fuels his belief that they don't deserve to live under the sun.

Although old and frail-looking, Vearn is far and away the mightiest character of the series, able to perform incredibly strong spells and possessing unfathomable magical power. His age also gives him a lot of experience and wisdom.

  • Arch-Enemy: He becomes Dai's greatest enemy after he desecrates Baran's body and kills Gomechan in front of him. Similarly, Vearn views Dai as a dangerous threat for his plans and takes several measures not to underestimate him.
  • The Archmage: Vearn's magic power and mastery of sorcery are nigh-unlimited, leaving even the greatest bearers of the title nose in the dust compared to him.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Vearn comes from the Dark World, where everyone fights everyone and only the strongest ones rule. He earned the title of Dark King by being the strongest of all by far (except for Velzar, the Dark Dragon King).
  • Beard of Evil: Vearn’s beard is shaped like a triangle, showcasing he’s an evil, old and wise demon lord. In his old body, at least.
  • Big Bad: He created and commands the whole Dark Army and his ambition to make the sun accessible to the Demon World by destroying the land of humanity is what drives the plot. Dai and Popp begin their journey to stop his plan.
  • Breaking Speech: Vearn can destroy his opponents without even using his overwhelming power. He deconstructs every argument used against him to break his foes' spirits, made all the more gloomy in that he is usually right. This makes for an extremely charismatic villain.
  • Broken Pedestal: To Hadlar, after planning to overthrow Vearn for years only to realize how outclassed he was, he swears his loyalty to him and relents to being his loyal subordinate. When it is revealed that he placed a bomb inside him of him in order to kill off the heroes without Hadlar's knowledge, he understandably turns on him and stops viewing him so highly.
  • The Chessmaster: He strings his enemies and allies like pieces on a board and it's taken more literally as he has Hadlar utilize minions made from chess pieces to be his subordinates. This line says it all:
"As it is in chess, the true victor moves his pieces such that his last move cannot be discerned by the opponent until it is already too late."
  • Counter-Attack: The "Tenchi Mato" (Demonic Stance of Heaven and Earth) stance allows him to use three different techniques (Phoenix Wing, Calamity End and Kaiser Phoenix) at the same time, in order to counter up to three enemy attacks. The drawback is that, afterwards, he's left open for an instant - something that doesn't happen when he uses each technique individually. Additionally, as pointed out by the heroes during the final battle, Tenchi Matou is a counter-attack that uses the flow of the enemy's attack to the user's advantage. Vearn cannot use it if he's not attacked.
  • Death by Irony: His major goal is being closer to the sun. After his death, his remains are headed towards the sun.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Has a visible Oh, Crap! moment when he sees Dai unleashing his SECOND Dragon crest. He proceeds to reassess Dai's threat level and to take him deadly seriously from then on, as inheriting Baran's crest, powers and battle instinct means he is finally on his level.
  • The Dreaded: Both his allies and his enemies are afraid of his overwhelming power.
  • Evil Genius: Feared for his intelligence almost as much as he is for his overwhelming might. And for a very good reason.
  • Evil Old Folks: He's a demon who casually talks about "waiting a few centuries" for something. He keeps his young body around, just in case he's facing an enemy that's too strong for his wizened body and needs to be at his prime in order to defeat him.
  • Evil Overlord: A quintessential example, following the tradition of the franchise. He rules the Demon World and threatens the entire planet.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Leagues beyond anyone in terms of sorcery, and he fights using a staff that converts his magic into attack power. In his younger form, he discards the staff in favor of utilizing his sorcerous attacks in direct hand-to-hand combat.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He does respect his enemies and seems very laid back, but it's only because he's completely sure of his eventual victory. He's actually a Straw Nihilist and a Sadist.
  • A Glass of Chianti: He's almost never seen without one until the final battle.
  • Genius Bruiser: What makes him so deadly is that he's not only immensely powerful, but very intelligent, having strategies taking place to succeed in his plan even when the heroes are fighting him. Justified in that he's had eons to refine his wit and power.
  • Grandpa God: He's a de facto Physical God whose initial aesthetic is basically 'what if a Grandpa God was evil?', exuding age, wisdom, and otherworldly might.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He served as this during Avan and Haldar's time, being a greater threat behind the shadows until he revived the latter and became the Big Bad in the main story.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: He was obscured behind a veil for the better part of the series.
  • Horned Humanoid: Except for the horns, his body is pretty similar to a human body.
  • Horns of Villainy: Being a demon and all that jazz...
  • Humanoid Abomination: If he truly has no other choice, he can turn into one of those a huge crustacean like humanoid.
  • Hurl It into the Sun: The fate of his remains.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: When he is young, he combines his god-like strength and magic for devastating effect.
  • Magic Staff: His ultimate weapon, the Staff of Edacity, which converts his tremendous magic might into pure energy, resulting in a blade that can slice through Orichalcum as easily as paper, and can be expended as a shield when needed. Until he regains his young body and doesn't need one anymore.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He strings others like Hadlar or Baran for his own benefit and discards them when their deaths would lead to a greater benefit for himself in the long run.
  • Maou the Demon King: His Japanese title, or "Daimaō" (Demon Emperor) to be precise. He comes from the franchise that codified the trope after all.
  • Mean Boss: Vearn refuses his generals the respite of death, and is not above sacrificing them. Still, compared to the average Evil Overlord he is a treat to work under. He respects his generals in earnest, rewarding good service, and being willing to absolve their mistakes so long as they remain worthy of his trust. (That is to say, remain useful.)
  • Might Makes Right: Basically his mindset as a demon. Combines this with a Breaking Speech when called out on being a Sadist.
  • One-Winged Angel: He can use his Third Eye to turn into a crustacean-like Humanoid Abomination to defeat Dai's own One-Winged Angel.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Wants to destroy the Human World so that the sun would shine on the Dark World. He comes dangerously close to succeeding.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Though unlike most examples, he's able to maintain his plans and is able to show why he can sit on the throne without worry.
  • Our Demons Are Different: In this story, they have tremendous magic and are not always villainous, though their supreme king is evil as they come.
  • Physical God: Labelled as the God of the Demon World by characters and narration alike, with all the power and influence that goes with it. He is supposedly a lesser being than the three 'real' gods, though the divine Mother Dragon states that he has actually reached such a level that they can no longer match his might.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He never underestimates the heroes, despite despising humanity as unworthy weaklings, proves cautious, and values his underlings, if only as assets.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: He is the ruler of the Dark Army and he has the immense power and vast wellspring of knowledge gathered from eons of experience to back it up.
  • Red Baron: Vearn is titled "the Dark King" and "the God of the Demon World". While not an actual god, his strength and charisma live up to the reputation.
  • Satanic Archetype: The leader of a large faction in the Demon World, he desires the light of the sun after living in a world of darkness, planning to destroy the realm of humanity to make the sun available to demons with the additional goal of it leading to a hellish dystopia where the strong prey on the weak, and to prove his superiority to the gods out of spite and vanity. He gathers subordinates through promises that ultimately doom them in the end and has a suave, charismatic veneer that conceals his truly nihilistic and sadistic nature.
  • Social Darwinist: The core of his philosophy. He regards the weak as insignificant insects and the strong as free to crush and play with as they like, and dismisses concepts like "hope" and "justice" as pointless delusions invented by the weak to keep going.
    • However, he is aware on some level that people like Avan have "power" beyond the simple "strength" he believes in. It takes several literal miracles and an unprecedented display of good will from mankind as a whole to finally make a dent into his world view.
  • Super-Strength: In his youth, he was so tremendously strong that he could tear Orichalcum apart like cardboard.
  • Third Eye: He can use it to imprison lower-level characters inside magic pearls or cause minions to have an upgrade in power. He can even apply it to himself to reshape himself into an even larger and demonic form.
  • Time Abyss: Popp points out that to Vearn, human lives have to seem like a small flash of light.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • First, when he realizes what Gomechan really is.
    • Then, when his plan to blow up the Human Realm fails because of Gomechan and Dai managing to get help from basically every human in the world, and has his world view and preconceptions utterly shattered.
  • Villain Has a Point: As vile as he is, Vearn makes a few good points on some things.
    • When Maam calls him out on how he can laud his power over others and enjoy it, he counters that power is a fact of the world they inhabit. The gods of Dai's world use their power to force the Demons and dragons below the surface, left to live in a molten hellscape. Meanwhile weaker creatures like humans and monsters can enjoy the luxuries of the surface, even such things like the sun.
    • Dai outright agrees that Vearn is correct in that even if he defeats Vearn, Dai will still be treated as an outcast by the majority of humanity, sans his friends due to his Dragon Knight background. This is backed up by Dai and Baran experiencing fear and ostricization by humans prior.
  • Villain Respect: He might loathe opposition and deem the True Companions inferior, but he genuinely respects Avan, Dai and his friends, acknowledging the serious threat they pose to his plan, and praising their skills in earnest. During the Final Battle, he grows as wary of Popp as he is of the other two.
  • We Can Rule Together: Attempted this with Baran, with success, then with Dai, and was rebuked.
  • Wicked Cultured: For an evil Omnicidal Maniac, he's quite the gentleman, with refined tastes.

    Killvearn

Voiced by: Hideyuki Tanaka (Japanese/1991 Series), Hiroyuki Yoshino (Japanese/2020 Series), José Luis Orozco (Latin American Spanish/1991 and 2020 series), Ian Hanlin (English/2020 series)

Killvearn and his assistant
Vearn's reaper. He's a armored knight-like being with a grin, with a little Jinkster named Piroro as a sidekick.
  • 13 Is Unlucky: He has 13 swords that he keeps hidden within his hat and pulls out to trap his opponent(s). They're invisible to all but Killvearn himself.
  • Actually a Doombot: His body is basically a magic machine... controlled by Piroro, his apparent sidekick.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Killvearn could've killed everyone and won the surface for Velzar if he had just shut up instead of revealing his true self and the Black Core inside his decoy to Dai's team, who kill him and take the Black Core out of orbit in a hurry.
  • Co-Dragons: Serves as this with Mystvearn in the latter half of the series, with Killvearn himself serving the Dark King out of his own self-interests for a hellish world that Vearn would create.
  • Cool Mask: Hides the fact that he is a robotic decoy for the real Killvearn, the little imp on his shoulder.
  • Dystopia Justifies the Means: The reason he follows Vearn is in hopes that it leads to a hellish world where the weak are preyed upon the strong.
  • Enigmatic Minion: He's Vearn's loyal follower... until he sees an opportunity for backstabbing the Dark King on Velzar's behalf. Vearn knows this, and accepts the challenge.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He exclusively uses conversation as a tool of psychological warfare - every interaction he has with another living being consists of him insulting, belittling, and/or threatening them in as calm, polite, and friendly a manner as possible.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When Baran slices him in half when trying to kill him, Piroro, who was just a little non combatant sidekick who'd always accompany him, frantically heals his body, reviving it. It's later revealed that Killvearn's "body" is actually a magic machine controlled by Piroro himself, who's the real Killvearn.
    • When Killvearn is celebrating with Vearn over Popp being condemned to certain death, the situation is flipped on its head out of the blue. He ends up dropping his glass, nearly tumbling over, and beyond flabbergasted at seeing WHO saved Popp. He is not being overly dramatic, Piroro was simply THAT surprised that he outright lost control of the puppet for a moment, and it shows with the unnatural way Killvearn drops the glass.
    • Then, when Killvearn picks a new mask in his quarters after Avan cut his previous mask in half, it is Piroro who is all alone in the room, who comments how much he loved the previous mask. This is yet another hint to his true identity.
  • The Gadfly: A serious and extremely dangerous example. He likes to get a rise out of people in order to test their loyalty and/or make them easier to kill, and he's very good at it.
  • Jerkass: He's an extremely calculated, deliberate example who only ever opens his mouth to intimidate and/or enrage someone and goad them into making a fatal mistake. Being able to work alongside him is one of Vearn's most stringent tests for his subordinates.
  • Leitmotif: Has a Creepy Circus Music tune playing whenever he appears.
  • Malevolent Masked Men:
    • The smiling mask he wears while killing and torturing underlines his sadistic nature.
    • When Avan makes him really angry, he discards his broken smiling mask and wears an angry one.
  • Meaningful Name: His name means that he is an assassin for Vearn, but also that he's an assassin sent by Velzar to kill Vearn when his guard is down. Vearn and Myst take it in stride, Myst henceforth adopting Mystvearn as his name.
  • My Blood Runs Hot: His "blood" is actually extremely hot magma from the Demon Realm.
  • Post-Final Boss: After Vearn is defeated, Killvearn confronts the heroes on Velzar's behalf and reveals himself as Piroro instead of the masked body and that it contains a Black Core bomb. Maam swiftly kills him but Dai gets blown into parts unknown carrying the Core into outer space, ending the story on a bittersweet note.
  • Professional Killer: He often states that his job is not to fight, but to kill.
  • Royal Rapier: When he needs to fight one-on-one, as in his final confrontation with Avan, he uses one of these.
  • Sadist: More apparent than Vearn, Killvearn likes to see others suffer and personally wants to see Vearn's goal succeed as it would result in a a hellish dystopia where the weak die and the strong survive.
  • Sensory Abuse: His Reaper Flute is able to generate a frequency that causes his opponents to undergo hallucinations, eventually rendering them unable to move and use their basic senses. Popp at first thinks that Killvearn is a Master of Illusion, only for him to explain that he's not using magic or any item to do so.
  • Shinigami: He's known as Shinigami, which literally means "God of Death", due to his reaper inspiration.
  • Sidekick Creature Nuisance: Piroro generally hangs around Killvearn's shoulder area and taunts anyone who isn't named Killvearn, rather than directly contribute to any of the Dark Army's schemes, let alone actively fight the heroes. Becomes heavily subverted to hell and back when it turns out that he's been the real Killvearn all along.
  • Sinister Scythe: His usual weapon, fitting his grim reaper motif.
  • The Starscream: He's actually an assassin sent to kill Vearn when his guard was down having been sent by Baran's dreaded enemy, Velzar in order to get rid of the competition in the off chance he got revived in the future.
  • Trap Master: His modus operandi is to ambush his targets with traps, either to kill them outright or to immobilize them enough for him to deal the finishing blow.
  • Troll: He shows himself in front of Vearn, stating he'll be his loyal follower... while calling himself Killvearn.
  • Villainous Breakdown: For the most of the story, he was a jovial yet sadistic individual.
    • After Avan manages to prove himself to be alive and manages to subdue Killvearn's trap, in the manga he goes dead silent. In the 2020 anime, he drops a wine glass in sheer surprise (which as mentioned above, is one more hint towards his real identity), and is very clearly destabilized by the reveal, screaming "HOW?!"
    • Then, he just drops his gleeful facade, immediately tries to kill him and when it results in him being humiliated, he makes it his personal goal to kill Avan painfully. It results in such a change that he discards his usual smiling mask for a more serious, angry one to reflect his mood, being much less jovial from that moment onwards.
  • Villain Respect: Towards Popp, admitting that people like him with such smarts are usually the heart of the team and get them to operate more efficiently, which is why they need to be taken out first for evil's sake.

Cloaked
The mysterious leader of the Shadow Legion who hardly says a word. Served as Hyunckel's teacher after rescuing him from death, and generally serves as the most loyal follower of the Dark King.
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Mystvearn is able to extend the fingers on his hands and turn them into blades sharp enough to pierce through Hyunckel's armor.
  • Casting a Shadow: His whole combat style is based on manipulating dark energy. He actually is a bundle of dark energy whose physical body is the Soul Jar for Vearn and Mystvearn actually needs to pull a Grand Theft Me in order to physically fight.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: During the fight of Baran and Hadlar, he briefly shows a handsome face beneath his hood and causes the scenario that results in Baran's death. And earlier, he stopped speaking when Hyunckel got suspicious of this trait. It's not until many chapters later, that it is revealed he actually has to keep hiding his status as the safeguard of Vearn's body as he needs to keep it a secret so it wouldn't get destroyed before Vearn would have need of it.
  • Death by Irony: He has been grooming Hyunckel to be a powerful host, only by the time it's needed that he's gotten too powerful and filled with good energy that, when he attempts it, Mystvearn ends up dying for it.
    • Mystvearn's entire schtick is his unwavering loyalty to Vearn, doing anything to please his master. His one desire entirely of his own will ends up being his undoing.
  • The Dragon: One of Vearn's most trusted underlings, and for good reason. He is actually Vearn's only true Dragon, and has been for millennia.
  • Enigmatic Minion: Nothing was known about him except he's been Vearn's Number Two man since Time Abyss... Until it is revealed that he is a part of a complex plan to be the Soul Jar for Vearn's true body.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Mystvearn himself is no slouch, being a literal bundle of dark energy born from negative emotions, and quite cruel and merciless. But he finds Zaboera's methods very distasteful and makes no attempt to hide that contempt for him, especially when the coward starts to badmouth the dead, or people Mystvearn otherwise respects.
  • Evil Is Sterile: And unhappy about it; this is why he has so much respect for people who work hard to get stronger, and so little for Dirty Cowards. As a bodiless parasite that borrows the power of others, Myst cannot improve himself through his own efforts, which left him Desperately Seeking A Purpose In Life until he met Vearn. His long-term plan to groom Hyunckel into a perfect host body is the closest he ever gets to experiencing this kind of satisfaction.
  • Evil Mentor: To Hyunckel, grooming him to be his next host after returning Vearn's true body to its master.
  • Evil Virtues: He embodies several, and remains extremely faithful to his core principles.
    • Undying Loyalty to Vearn, of course.
    • Villain Respect for any foe or friend capable of improving themselves, and facing impossible odds fearlessly, because he is very much aware of how he got his place on the food chain, and of how it can not by any stretch of the word be considered honorable. In turn, this means as stated above, that he will have utter contempt for cowards who dare to badmouth people he respects.
    • He shows a strong understanding of honor, such as when he is tasked to deal with Hadlar, but convinced and moved by the latter's motivation to improve and true drive to break his own limits, and decides of his own accord to take the fight to Dai's party to save time for Hadlar to finish his transformation.
    • While most of the time he passes as The Stoic, the above traits are so many buttons that can cause his emotions to flare up. If anything, this underlines his consistency of character.
  • Flash Step: He can be very fast, apparently even without moving his limbs.
  • Gender Bender: Briefly possesses Maam to attack the heroes before going to Hyunckel.
  • Grand Theft Me: His modus operandi. Invoked for Vearn, who uses Myst as a caretaker for his young frozen body.
    • Mystvearn has his own agenda in grooming Hyunckel to be his next host. He briefly possesses Maam before taking over Hyunckel, only to be Hoist by His Own Petard when the latter manages to destroy him from the inside.
  • High Collar of Doom: A very noticeable part of his uniform.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Disparages Zaboera for his dishonorable tactics, but it's later revealed that he's actually an intangible spirit that requires to take another's physical body and utilize their strength as his own, which is underhanded in its own right.
    • He admonishes Killvearn for talking too much, when he himself starting talking after many years of being silent.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He possesses Hyunckel, the host he's been grooming as his next body, but he ends up being destroyed from the inside due to the positive energy Hyunckel had acquired through his change towards good.
  • In the Hood: And he cannot under any circumstances remove it... Since it hides Vearn's true face.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: He kills Flazzard after failing to defeat Dai, even after he gave the latter a power-boost from his Shadow Armour to aid him in a callous manner. While the context makes it pitiful to the heroes for his death, Flazzard was still a psychotic, mass-murderer and an arrogant Glory Seeker who kicks people while they're down, so he had his death coming.
  • Living Shadow: His real body is literally made of dark energy, but one unable to fight on its own, thus needing to pull a Grand Theft Me in order to attack physically.
  • Meaningful Echo: "The Demon Lord's wishes are the only priority". Pulled extremely effectively for maximum dramatic value, reinforcing Mystvearn's Villainous Valor.
    • Mystvearn says this earlier in the series during a meeting among the Demon Army generals there when Flazzard complains about being held back while Hyunckel is sent out to face Avan's disciples, which succeeds in getting Flazzard, a Glory Hound that seeks Vearn's approval, to consent.
    • Late in the series, when Hadlar pleads with him, asking Was It All a Lie?, Mystvearn sadly replies this sentence word for word, though expressing respect towards Hadlar.
    • Then further near the end of the series, Zaboera tries to get Mystvearn to protect him when the chips are down. Mystvearn then gets him to remember this line, making it clear that any Undying Loyalty Mystvearn harbors is for Vearn, and Vearn alone.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Mystvearn refers to his mysterious nature and also the fact that he is the secret safe-guard of Vearn's physical body in its prime and he's keeping this truth a mystery. As he puts it, he is the darkness shrouding Vearn.
    • It also foreshadows his true nature as a mist monster.
  • Shapeshifter Weapon: Can change his hands into swords.
  • Soul Jar: His current body is Vearn's true physical body, which he keeps hidden at all times so no one realizes and potentially destroys it before the real Vearn is ready. While the real Vearn gathered knowledge and experience, Mystvearn would preserve the physical body in its prime so in the case the true Vearn needed it against a foe he couldn't defeat in his older form, Mystvearn would return it and have Vearn be restored to his youth and having the knowledge of his years of existence to be a formidable threat.
  • The Quiet One: To the point it was rare to hear him speak at all for years, if not decades. This becomes a plot point as his voice was that of the true Vearn's body, thus justifying his silence as it would expose the Soul Jar plan too early.
  • The Stoic: He is mostly always reserved and silent except when it is of importance justified as speaking would alert others that he's currently the Soul Jar of Vearn and could jeopardize his master's convoluted plan in the long run.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Vearn, serving him for eons as his own most trusted servant, to the point that he willingly served as the Soul Jar for Vearn's younger body in order to keep it safe in the case he would need it against a particularly strong enemy and preserve it in its prime so Vearn could go at full strength, without any intention of using it against his master.
  • Walking Spoiler: His body's true identity reveals vital information on himself as well as Vearn's purpose for him.
  • Yes-Man: To Vearn.

    Baran

Voiced by: Unshō Ishizuka (Japanese/1991 series), Show Hayami (Japanese/2020 series), Ricardo Hill (Latin American Spanish/1991 series), Gerardo Vásquez (Latin American Spanish/2020 series), Daniel Palacios (European Spanish/1991 series), Dean Redman (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baran_0.png
The Dragon Master General of the Dark Army's Dragon Legion. He's a powerful warrior with strong morals, but a burning hatred for mankind.
  • Abusive Parent: While he initially wants to recruit Dai and have him help wipe out humanity, that doesn't stop him from attacking Dai and trying to kill him if he insists on resisting. Then there's him resorting to giving Dai amnesia...
  • Archnemesis Dad: To Dai after his Face–Heel Turn, culminating in him fighting his own son personally.
  • Anti-Magic: As Crocodine points out, Baran is immune to magic and can only be damaged through physical means, which isn't any easier when he uses Draconic Aura, which gives him Super-Toughness.
  • Cool Sword: The Demon Dragon Sword, a singled-edged BFS with a pommel resembling a Dragon's head created by the gods themselves and one of the very few weapons that can withstand a Dragon Knight's Draconic Aura.
  • Death Seeker: After his first proper loss to Dai, Hyunckel quickly realizes that he has regained his human heart, but feels that he's done too much to turn back now, and so instead hopes Dai will kill him so he can atone.
  • Dragon Rider: Famous for fighting while riding a dragon, though he never does it onscreen.
  • Energy Weapon: Can shoot a magic laser beam from the crest on his forehead.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • He may hate humans for killing Soala and wiped Dai's memories clean during their first battle, but he would not forgive those who pick on the weak, as Fenbren finds out the hard way.
    • His opinion on Hadler is overall really poor, but he's willing the follow his orders (even when he disagrees with them) despite being stronger than him as Hadler's position in the Dark Army ranks above his one, showing that he respects the chain of command. It's only when he discovers Hadler hid information about Dai being a Dragon Knight (and thus his son) that Baran finally gets tired of Hadler's tricks and disobeys him.
    • Despite being very ruthless and wishing the destruction of humanity, he's horrified at the idea of Vearn destroying the surface world in its entirety and turning it into a hellish place like the Underworld. This is what makes him go from a neutral position to take action against the Dark King himself.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: During his second fight with Crocodine, he can't comprehend why Crocodine is willing to sacrifice himself for humans and how his faith in them is allowing him to withstand his attacks.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: His voice is appropriately deep and commanding as one would expect from a powerful general of an evil army.
  • Foreshadowing: Upon seeing him for the first time, you think he is a human working for the Demon Army just like Hyunckel, except... Flazzard lashes out at Hyunckel for being allowed to be a General as a "mere human"... Baran merely comments that his anger is making the room too hot. This is the first hint dropped at Baran's true nature.
  • Flash Step: Capable of this as a Dragonoid.
  • Freudian Excuse: After settling down with Soala, her father tried to execute him for being a powerful non-human, but this led to Soala getting caught in the crossfire. Baran then came to hate humanity and vowed to destroy them in revenge.
    • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: As the arc goes on however, despite knowing his Dark and Troubled Past at that point, the party progressively lose sympathy for him as he commits more monstrous acts, with Hyunckel outright calling him a monster and beyond redemption when he tries to kill Dai and breaks into Evil Laugh when he thinks he's done it.
  • Graceful Loser: Having regained his human heart in the process, he takes his loss to Dai rather well, even helping in reviving Popp before leaving and calling Dai by his human name.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He uses all his Draconic Aura in one shot to save Dai from a bomb implanted by Vearn into Hadlar.
  • Hero of Another Story: Prior to his Face–Heel Turn, he had faced an evil dragon that threatened humanity, but since Avan's victory over the much weaker, but more well-known Hadlar was more prominent in the eyes of the public, it led to his own victory being Overshadowed by Awesome, something he slightly has an issue with.
  • Humans Are Bastards: What he believes in and one of the reasons why he joined Vearn.
  • Hypocrite: He claims that it's a Dragon Knight's duty to wipe out anyone with aspirations to Take Over the World or otherwise threatens the balance. But when Dai quickly points that's what Vearn, whom he follows, is trying to do, Baran tries to defend his actions by deflecting the blame onto humans. In short, he's aware of the Dragon Knights' duties, but is opting to ignore his duty and even follow the guy said duty dictates he should destroy out of his hatred of humanity.
    • As Hyunckel points out later to convince him out of his hatred for humanity, he wants to kill all humans due to viewing them as evil, yet his wife Soala, whom he loved and who gave her life to save his, was also human, disproving his viewpoint before it even formed.
  • It's All About Me: A rather tragic example. He does love both Dai and Soala, but his anger at humans for their Accidental Murder of the latter prompts him to disregard her Last Request to not hate humans in favour of trying to wipe them out, making him an Abusive Parent who disregards Dai's wishes to protect them, doing everything from attempted kidnapping to inflicting him with Laser-Guided Amnesia, so he can force him to help in his conquest to wipe out humanity.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: His most powerful spell, Doruora.
  • Knight of Cerebus: His appearance to Dai causes a significant defeat for the boy, as well as introduce darker elements to the story such as humanity's darker side.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em:
    • Weakened from the fight and from stealing Dai's memories, he opts to retreat and rest before coming back to take Dai.
    • After taking a full Avan Strash and losing his Demon Dragon Blade, he recognizes that he no longer has the strength to fight and surrenders, even going as far as revive Popp, before leaving.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Being a Dragon Knight, both his strength and his speed are at a superhuman level.
  • Love Makes You Evil: The reason he joined the Demon Army is his tragic lovestory with Soala.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: One of his the most dangerous villains, and Dai's real father.
  • Love Redeems: After making him evil, he's redeemed by parental love for Dai.
  • Manly Facial Hair: The strongest general, and the most moustached one.
  • Neutral No Longer: Downplayed. He starts as a very prominent antagonist, but after his final fight with Dai, he decides to abandon the Dark Army and remains in a secluded cave focused in recovering his power and repair his sword for a last battle against his son, with the intention to meet his end at his hands. However, once Killvearn attempts to kill him and reveals Vearn's true goal of destroying the surface of the world, Baran decides that he will not let the Dark King have his way and proceeds to directly confront him.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Has one when Dai coordinates an attack with Crocodine that pierces his Draconic Aura and causes him to bleed
    • Has another, larger one when Popp tries to take him out using Megante.
    • His most visual one occurs when Dai tanks his Doruora, with his mouth agape in shock.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He manages to keep frowning even When He Smiles.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: He's powerful enough to destroy an entire nation and everyone within its borders, as the denizens of the kingdom of Alkeed found out the hard way.
  • Power Gives You Wings: His Dragonoid form naturally gives him a large pair of dragon wings that he's able to fly around easily with.
  • Power Makes Your Voice Deep: While he already has a powerful low voice in his default form, it gets even lower in his Dragonoid mode.
  • Redemption Equals Death: His redemption ends with him sacrificing himself to save Dai.
  • Respected by the Respected: He admits to having respected Hyunckel and Crocodine before they left the Dark Army and sided with the humans. This respect still stands somewhat even after their Heel–Face Turn, with him warning his three Dragon Riders to be wary of them.
  • Revenge Before Reason: When Soala Takes the Fire Ball for him, she used her last words to beg him to not hate humans, only for him to vow to destroy them and side with Vearn for this end. Granted, it probably didn't help that her own father called her a disgrace for sacrificing her life for him.
  • Shock and Awe: His preferred form of attack, either by calling down thunderbolts with his Kazap spell or charging up his sword with lightning and unleashing Gigabreak.
  • Spirit Advisor: By inheriting Baran's Dragon Crest, Dai understands his father's true feelings for his family, has visions of his mother and receives advice from Baran's spirit at key moments.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Soala. He doesn't take it well when Soala died Taking the Bullet.
  • Super Mode: His Dragonoid form, which combines the strenth of humans, darklings and dragons to increase his already impressive power.
  • This Cannot Be!: He's baffled that Popp and Hyunckel beat his three Dragon Riders, and more so when Hyunckel states Larhart gave him his armour of his own free will.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After being defeated by Dai and having discovered Vearn's true objective.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: After fighting for the world's sake for years, he decides to settle down with a wife. Unfortunately... her father didn't like his true nature and decided to kill him, but his wife got in the crossfire. So he decided to just destroy everything.
  • Wrecked Weapon: In their final clash, Dai is able to break his Demon Dragon Blade with an Avan Strash using Hyunckel's Dark Armour Sword, winning the fight.

    Zaboera

Voiced by: Naoki Tatsuta (Japanese/1991 series), Mitsuo Iwata (Japanese/2020 Series), Roberto Carrillo (Latin American Spanish/1991 series), Jorge Roig (Latin American Spanish/2020 series), Mariano Fraile (European Spanish/1991 series), Lee Tockar (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zaboera.png
Leader of the Mystic Legion, he is an ancient, small, and highly intelligent, relying on trickery to get what he wants. He does not care for anybody and regards everyone as his tools, including his son Zamza, who he used to acquire essential information on the development of Hyper Demons. He has his troops fight for him since he does not like to get his hands dirty. He hides in the shadows and will claim anyone's accomplishments as his own if it helps further his plans.
  • Abusive Parents: Zaboera considers his own son, Zamza, to be no more than a tool, which he tells him right in his face. He goes as far as to say that, if he can't be useful to him, he's just trash. This causes a lot of problems in his behavior.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Surprisingly, despite being a generally despicable antagonist, Crocodine feels sorry for him after he kills the mage, stating that he once respected Zaboera for his magical skills, but that he pities how he got corrupted due to his greed and cowardice, and saying that, had he have been someone like Dai who always strives to get strong by his own means rather than using others, he may have not ended dying pitifully.
  • Arch-Enemy: He becomes Crocodine's, having manipulated him into discarding his honor and thus making it his personal goal to kill him. It culminates in Crocodine killing him after the latter attempted to flee for another time after being defeated by Lon.
  • Bad Boss: He used a Magus Morphed as himself to be killed by Crocodine's Vortex Axe during the battle on Valge Island to cover his escape and used his defeated minions to become a monstrous Superior Being.
  • Dirty Coward: He actually takes pride in leeching off other people's accomplishments without taking risks himself.
  • Evil Genius: Zaboera is the weakest general in single combat, but he knows a lot of ways to fight indirectly.
  • Evil Sorcerer: He commands a legion of evil sorcerer minionsnote , as well as various demons like Flying Flayers and Soaring Scourgers.
  • Evil Old Folks: The oldest-looking general, and the most despicably evil.
  • Feed It with Fire: Casts Hexcitation, which absorbs his comrades' spells to power up his own, as seen with his Flying Flayer minions casting Kafrizzes.
  • Fog of Doom: Zaboera's Dark Incense can put enemies to sleep like babies, using it to keep Dai and his companions asleep until Dai awakens to Popp pleading for help to save him from an assassination attempt.
  • Hate Sink: Unlike the other villains of the series, Zaboera has no redeemable qualities like a sympathetic motivation or sense of honor. Instead he's an abusive parent, a coward who fights in the most underhanded way possible in order to claim anyone's accomplishments as his own while using them as mere pawns and not nearly as clever as he actually thinks he is. Even villainous characters like Mystvearn think he's absolute scum.
  • Jerkass: He's probably the most despicable character in the whole story, being an abusive parent, disproportionately overconfident and cowardly person who lets others do his dirty work.
  • Mad Scientist: When he's not doing evil things, he's in his lab creating other evil beings such as Superior Beings.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Manages to manipulate Crocodine into accepting his help during his fight with Dai, using Brass, Dai's adopted father figure as a means to undermine the boy.
  • Master of Illusion: He manages to disguise a Magus as himself to avoid getting hit by Crocodine's Vortex Axe and get a surprise attack on Popp by disguising himself as Maam with Morph.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: He can't be taller than a meter.
  • No Body Left Behind: His ultimate fate after Crocodine kills him.
  • One-Winged Angel: He's able to merge his minions together to form a demonic Superior Being exoskeleton over himself that's so strong that it required a dangerous sword that Lon had sealed until that moment in order to harm it.
  • Playing with Fire: Casts Sizzle just like Hadlar.
  • Poisonous Person: He keeps several deadly poison inside his fingernails as a last-resort weapon and the Venom Chain, a medallion that can used as a poison dart.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: On the receiving end of this, but it's always well-deserved.
  • Sinister Surveillance: He has Heyedras at his beck and call to monitor both friend and foe.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He is a very cunning manipulator, but he's not as skilled in sorcery or even possessing as much smarts as the other generals, let alone Vearn himself.
  • Smug Snake: He's very confident in his planning and manipulating ability, but he's not as smart as he thinks he is.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: After Baran's death, he speaks dismissively of him. Everyone including Mystvearn find this repulsive.
  • Undignified Death: After barely managing to escape Lon's attack, Crocodine shows up one last time to finish him off one last time before he scurried off to regroup and pester the heroes more. When Zaebora attempts to attack his former fellow general, he gets squashed like a bug when Crocodine pushes the Vortex Axe down, being fully aware of how treacherous he is at this point, before Crocodine disintegrates his body.

    Flazzard

Voiced by: Ken Yamaguchi (Japanese/1991 Series), Toru Nara (Japanese/2020 Series), Carlos Magaña (Latin American Spanish/1991 series), Rubén Leon (Latin American Spanish/2020 series), Juan Fernández Mejías (European Spanish/1991 series), Brian Drummond (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flazzard.png
Leader of the Blizzblaze Legion, he was created by Hadlar using forbidden magic. His body is a combination of fire and ice and he can uses both elements to attack. Flazzard cares only for glory and winning, doing whatever to achieve it and taking no interest in fair fights.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When Dai manages to destroy half of his body and is on the verge of death, he begs for Mystvearn to give him another body, even if it means turning him into a subordinate.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite Flazzard being a psychotic and sadistic being, seeing Mystvearn nonchalantly disposing of him while he begs for one more chance causes Popp to shed some sympathy for him.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Everything about his actions is about getting the most glory, even it means undermining his allies to do so. Justified as he embodies Hadlar's self-destructive desire to have his ambitions fulfilled even at the cost of his pride and life.
  • Anti-Magic: His Curse Field works in this manner. Using the polarities of Fire and Ice's opposing elements, he's able to negate the magical powers and physical abilities of everyone within the barrier other than himself.
  • Ax-Crazy: Flazzard is sadistically cruel to his enemies and very easily angered. Justified since he was created by Hadlar while he was ambition at his most, making Flazzard the incarnation of a Hadlar's lust for glory.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: When he ambushes the party after they defeat Hyunkel, he floods the arena with lava but warps out before he can confirm that they died. This allows Hyunkel to perform a Heroic Sacrifice to save them.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Is filled with the same psychotic evil spirit as Hadlar before he went through Character Development.
  • Combat Pragmatist: As he puts it, he doesn't like fighting but he really likes winning. Any tactic is on the table as long as it lets him secure victory.
  • Dirty Coward: While he would be reckless and endanger himself, when it actually seems that he'd die, he throws away his pride and rank as a General in order to become Mystvearn's lackey, just so he'd live a bit longer. note
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Despite his elemental affinities, his ultimate attack is effectively him turning himself into a flurry of stones he can use to barrage enemies.
  • Dub Name Change: In some dubs of the 1991 anime adaptation, his name was changed to "Santor".
  • Evil Is Burning Hot / Evil Is Deathly Cold: He's half-fire, half-ice and full-evil. Fortunately for the heroes, he can't use both elements at the same time.
  • Evil Is Petty: He likes to pepper his major villanous acts with some small villainous acts.
  • Fatal Flaw: Ambition. Flazzard does increasingly reckless things such as risking his life for the sake of his ambition and even willing to throw away his pride to become Mystvearn's subordinate, just to continue living for his ambitions. The latter decision gets him killed.
  • Flipping the Bird: To the camera (and indirectly Hyunckel).
  • Foil: To Halder's later creations, the Shinei Kiden, made after his maturity into a more noble fighter, signifying the two stages of his character of prior and after this development. Flazzard represents his earlier characterization as the dirty psychotic ambitious side at the start of the series. The Guardian Knights represents his more noble side who with one exception represent his more courageous and respectful aspect of his later characterization.
  • For the Evulz: Oppression and domination is what he lives for. When he's fighting clearly inferior opponents, he toys with them and teases them to savour the moment.
  • Genius Bruiser: He's famous for combining fiery passion with cold-blooded calculation, and his feral appearance and cocky attitude do indeed conceal a surprisingly keen tactical mind.
  • Glory Seeker: His whole reason of being. He doesn't hesitate an instant before almost killing himself just to win Vearn's favor.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: His state once his core, which holds his fire and ice halves together, is destroyed.
  • Hate Sink: He is a shameless glory seeker who likes winning at all costs- preferably through underhanded methods- especially kicking his enemies while they're helpless, being incredibly obnoxious, and sadistic.
  • Hidden Depths: Seeing the wounds on Crocodine from his fight against Dai, he immediately properly assesses Dai's threat level: he wields power far beyond what the laws of physics would allow. Zaboera lampshades the insight immediately, stating it is his cold analytical mind at work stemming from his ice aspect.
    • It comes to the forefront again when he faces off with Dai the first time and has an Oh, Crap! moment as Dai unleashes his Magic Sword technique Fire Earth-Slash and rips his arm off. He takes the warning call very seriously and unleashes all the unfair debuffs he can on Dai.
  • Hot-Blooded: His fiery temper is represented by his flame based left half as he's constantly screaming and being passionate.
  • Jagged Mouth: He has this type of mouth perpetually, usually in a perpetual fiendish smile unless disturbed.
  • Jerkass: Whereas Zaboera can be Faux Affably Evil when the situation calls for it, Flazzard is an abrasive dick 24/7. When you see life as a contest where everyone else is a rival, there's no reason to feign politeness to people you intend to crush.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: On both sides of this. When he has the upper hand, he's the one doing the kicking. When he begs Mystvearn for one more chance after Dai defeats him in his armored mode, Mystvearn sees no more use for him and snuffs his life out by stomping and grinding him with his foot.
  • Lack of Empathy: He doesn't know what empathy is.
  • No-Sell: Within his Curse field, all physical strength is halved and magical abilities are negated, with the exception of himself.
  • One-Winged Angel: With Mystvearn's help, he got encased in a huge knight armor that boosts his physical strength further.
  • Oxymoronic Being: Appearance and ability wise, he's a split of flame and ice, two normally incompatible elements. Justified as his core keeps him together.
  • Rock Monster: He's made of hundreds of little rocks, but it's usually hidden by his exaggerated fiery/icy look.
  • Put the "Laughter" in "Slaughter": He certainly seems to enjoy himself when he kills people.
  • Puzzle Boss: The heroes can't hope to kill Flazzard due to his sheer power and his regenerative ability even after his Curse Field has been stopped, and with using his self-destructive technique he'd wipe them out before he ends himself. It requires Dai having to master the Air Slash technique and actually finding Flazzard's core with his inner senses rather than relying on pure sight to finally put him down, and this discovery allows him to take down Flazzard even after the latter bonded with Mystvearn's armor.
  • Psycho for Hire: With the exception of Zaebora, most of the Leaders are varying degrees of honorable, wanting to work out of personal desire to enact vengeance for their past or out of loyal obligation to their superiors. Flazzard on the other hand, wants to win for the sake of glory and enjoys massacring others for the sake of it.
  • Slasher Smile: Flazzard's default expression is a wide, twisted smile.
  • The Social Darwinist: He sees life as one big competition on who's the strongest, and enjoys being as high on pecking order he is.
  • Story-Breaker Power: His Curse Field, by summoning a tower of fire and one of ice, he is able to reduce the strength of his enemies, including the negation of their magical powers while he retains all of the benefits. It's telling that the first thing the heroes do is go after the towers to regain the advantage rather than facing him first, even after learning new powers to defeat him. Due to his inherent dual nature, he is able to utilize two types of Elements simultaneously at the same time, while others, even with mastery over elements have to utilize one element at a time.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Done twice.
    • When Mystvearn arrives just as he's on his last leg, he begs Mystvearn to save him, and Mystvearn obliges by offering him the strongest armor in his branch, in exchange for serving as Mystvearn's underling. Flazzard refuses at first, but relents when Mystvearn turns to leave and his drive for victory gets the better of him.
    • After Dai manages to shatter the armor he wears (and himself as well) and he's nearer death than he was before donning the armor, he begs Mystvearn for another chance. Unfortunately for him, however, Mystvearn sees no more point in keeping him around this time and snuffs his life out instead.
  • Undignified Death: He's finally reduced to a single ember that continues to beg for an additional chance, but is then squashed underneath Mystvearn's foot like a bug.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He is more than willing to attack and/or kill any female human who's unlucky enough to be in his path, as Leona, Marin, and Maam can attest. note
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: By utilizing the opposing elements of Fire and Ice together, he can make a barrier that negates the abilities of his enemies while he retains all of his advantages.
    • It also counts on a fundamental level as he's composed of Fire on one side and Ice on the other, leading to him having the advantages of the strongest of both elements by natural composition alone. This theoretically makes him naturally gifted with the potential to use Medoroa, an ultimate spell combining the polarizing elements of Ice and Fire to annihilate everything in its path due to the composition of his being, according to Matoriv. Thankfully, he dies before leveling up and gaining the experience and knowledge to use such a power.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: On the receiving end of this due to Mystvearn's actions.

Subordinates

    Zamza

Voiced by: Akio Suyama (Japanese/2020 series), Ian Hanlin (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zamza.png

Zaboera's son, a skilled sorcerer and evil scientist. He helps his father's research for the Superior Being by combining the best characteristics of every monster, going as far to use his own body as a guinea pig. Although he's not as strong as a general, his Superior Being form is incredibly tough, to the point he claims to be even stronger than a Dragon Knight.

  • A Good Way to Die: In his last moments, Zamza is satisfied, glad he got to achieve the power of a Superior Being for even a brief time and to have been useful to Hadlar and his father.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: The party can't help but pity Zamza as he dies, recognizing that he just wanted his father's love.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Zamza is very smart and, after seeing Maam's attacks a couple of times, he's able to figure out that she can only use her Refractor Fist on her hands, and so covers them in a special mucus to prevent her from using it.
  • Evil Chancellor: Zamza infiltrates the humans kingdom and acts as King Romos' chancellor with the intention to gather more subjects for his and his father's research. With his position, Zamza suggests king Romos to organize a martial arts tournament with the strongest human warriors.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Zamza is a strong member of the Mystic Legion of the Dark Army, which specializes in evil magic users. However, in his Superiour Being form, Zamza cannot use any spell.
  • Flawed Prototype: Zamza is the first one to achieve the form of a Superior Being but, by his own admission, it's an incomplete version and he cannot use spells in said form. Hadlar, who's turned into a perfected hyper-demon using Zamza's data acquired in his battle with Dai, is much stronger and can use spells as well.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: Has demonic looking wings as a Superior Being.
  • Healing Factor: As part of turning himself into a Superior Being, he has a strong healing ability that lets him regenerate entire body parts in a few seconds. Maam turns his own healing factor against himself with the Refractor Fist and destroys his pincher.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Zamza's arrogant nature is because of how his father demeaned him constantly as a tool and nothing more than trash if he didn't make himself useful to him. When Maam calls him trash, he gets genuinely offended.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Zigzagged. While both Zamza and his father are ArchMages loyal to the Demon Army and cruel, Smug Snakes, the latter is completely irredemable while Zamza has some good qualities.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Whereas Zaborea is an ugly gremlin and a Dirty Coward who'd rather not put himself at risk, Zamza is at least normal-looking enough to pass for a human with the help of a spell and is comparatively much braver, experimenting on himself and even fighting Dai head on despite him being a Dragon Knight.
  • Made of Iron: During their initial confrontation, Dai is able to wail into him and while it certainly hurts, he comes out of it relatively unscathed. Turns out this is because he made himself among the first test subjects for his Superior Being project, combining himself with a bunch of monsters and giving him the strength to withstand a Dragon Knight's power.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Zamza claims that the Superior Being is made by combining the best parts of the strongest monsters, this results in his Superior Being form to look like a clumsy amalgamation of different creatures. Justified since it's a first attempt and, by his own admission, still isn't 100% complete.
  • One-Winged Angel: After Dai defeats Zamza, the latter decides to show off the result of his research and becoming a Superior Being, which is far stronger and more monstrous-looking. As a downside, however, Zamza cannot use spells as a Superior Being.
  • Power Pincers: As a Superior Being, one of his arms has a giant crab pincer.
  • This Cannot Be!: Zamza is utterly baffled when Maam's Refractor Fist breaks one of his horns, and actually does damage to him, especially when he notices his Healing Factor stopped working.
  • Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: His clothes are destroyed when he turns into a Superior Being, and when he's bested and turns back he's naked, though everything is censored.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Everything Zamza does is for the hope of gaining his father's approval. Too bad his father is Zaboera — he does praise Zamza, but it's only because Zamza manages to deliver his knowledge on the Hyper Demon research to him, right after Zamza has died.

    Orichalcum King Maximum

Voiced by: Tesshō Genda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maximum.png
The piece of the chess king brought to life via forbidden magic, he prides himself as the ultimate defender of the Vearn Palace. He commands the remaining chess pieces to do his bidding.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Originally a chess piece made of Orichalcum, he has been given life through magic. The other chess pieces that he commands have been likewise created the same way.
  • Beard of Evil: Being a metallic being, he doesn’t have a true beard, but he has three pieces of Orichalcum around his face that look like a mustache and a beard, giving him a more kingly and arrogant image.
  • Boisterous Weakling: As Hyunckel points out, despite all the gloating, Maximum has no offensive or defensive abilities, the only thing he has is a handful of minions that aren't even reliable in direct combat.
  • Chess Motif: He and his Mooks are all chess pieces, brought to life via magic. Similar to the chess King, Maximum himself can't fight at all.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In a desperate attempt to save his life, he finds one of Hyunckel's weakness from his records, and orders remaining pawns to attack defenseless Hym whom Hyunckel had just befriended, leading to him Taking the Bullet.
  • Dirty Coward: Despite priding himself as the strongest guard of Vearn’s Palace, he’s in truth a coward who attacks weakened enemies first with numbers. He also takes advantage of the weaknesses of his enemies in the dirtiest ways and when he completely loses the battle, he retreats to strike them in another moment. Somewhat justified, as, being the king piece, he’s actually pretty weak.
  • Enemy Scan: He gets Hyunckel's stats by looking at him using Super Scan and sees he's low on health. It doesn't help him, as Hyunckel is such a Determinator (what with his soul's ability being Combative Spirit...) his HP literally can't drop below 1. He also discovers Larhart has Super-Speed by using King Access, but underestimates just how much.
  • Flunky Boss: He uses the rest of the animated chess pieces to fight for him, seven clones of Hym, and one for Sigma, Fenbren and Block, though compared to Orichalcum Royal Guards these have no will of their own and are considerably weaker.
  • Paper Tiger: He looks huge and imposing, but in truth he’s actually very cowardly and weak, to the point a severely wounded Hyunckel could destroy all his pieces and defeat him if it wasn't for his dirty tricks.
  • Smug Snake: He goes on a tangent how, according to his data, Hyunckel can die from just a scratch, and that Vearn will praise him for finishing off a weak opponent. Hyunckel proceeds to break Orichalcum pieces with bare hands, sending the Maximum into a panic.
  • Spikes of Villainy: There's a sharp spike protruding out of each of his shoulders.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He introduces himself as The Smart Guy and "The Cleaner" of the Vearn Palace and believes wounded Hyunckel would be an easy target before he'll join Mystvearn against the rest of the heroes. Maximum's fight is one of the shortest in the series.
  • You Are Already Dead: Larhart slashed him without him noticing. Hym even warns him about it, but Maximum laughs it off, tries to leave only to end up bissected and exploding.

    Goroa

Goroa

Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato (Japanese/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goroa.PNG
True form

The Drummer of Vearn's Palace. He's a monster with a drum for a stomach powered up by Vearn in order to check the Magic Furnace that allows the palace to move. Despite his silly appearance and behavior, he's a power hungry individual who doesn't thinks twice in taking advantage of situations that will make Vearn favor him more.

  • Defiant to the End: To his credit, after being completely surpassed by Dai, he decides to attempt one last desperate charge to defeat him, even ignoring direct orders from Vearn.
  • Depower: After being blasted off by Dai's Draura, he loses the power he got from Vearn and is reduced to his true form, a small tambourine-like monster.
  • Fat Bastard: He's a huge, obese troll-like monster who has no qualms killing others to obtain praise from his boss. Subverted by his true form, however, who is much smaller.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He has no problem making small talk with Dai and even tries to help him free Leona from the Magic Furnace. However, once he seizes the chance to attain glory and gain Vearn's favor he quickly turns against the boy.
  • Fusion Dance: In a last, desperate attempt, he fuses with the Magic Furnace to give it his magical power and make it destroy Dai. This proves to be ineffective, as he's promptly blasted away by the Draura Dai acquires after awakening the emblem Baran left him.
  • Glory Hound: He's willing to use dirty tactics in order to be praised and rewarded by Vearn, often with dangerous consequences for him.
  • Gravity Is Purple: His gravity attacks are depicted in the anime with a purplish aura.
  • Gravity Master: Vearn gave him power over gravity so he could keep the Magic Furnace functional. All he has to do is slap his belly-drum in order to make it work and crush enemies with the gravitational pressure generated. His magic proves strong enough to overwhelm Dai, but once he awakens his second Dragon Knight emblem he's easily surpassed.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: He has four arms, each one carrying a baton. This way he can increase the power of his gravitational waves and crush the enemy more easily.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: His main trait. When he sees Dai is defenseless trying to free Leona and Gome from the Magic Furnace he quickly attacks him by surprise, intending to get a reward from Vearn.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After being defeated by Dai and reduced to his weak original form, he wisely decides to retreat rather than facing the Dragon Knight again.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's only a low ranking mook in the grand scheme of things, however, by attacking Dai he forces him to unleash the second Dragon Knight emblem he inherited from his father, making him even more powerful for his fight against Vearn.
  • Uncertain Doom: He's last seen fleeing from Dai and Leona after being defeated by the former and losing the power Vearn gave him. He never appears afterwards, so it's unknown if he escaped successfully or fell with the palace.

The three Dragon riders

Baran's loyal subordinates; they control the dragons of the sky (Galdandy), the sea (Borahorn), and the land (Larhart). They are extremely loyal to their master and share his hatred for humanity. It's said that they are about as strong as the generals of the Demon Army.

    In General
  • Dragon Rider: As high-ranking of the Dragon Legion, they are dragon riders, with each of them specializing in a different kind of dragon. Galdandy rides a Ethereal Serpent, Borahorn a Wyrtoise, and Larhart a Green Dragon.
  • Fantastic Racism: Just like Baran, all three look down heavily on humans and enjoy killing them, though Larhart is the only one with a Freudian Excuse. The latter is also the only one to change his idea on humans after seeing Popp and Hyunckel.
  • Freudian Trio: The three have this contrast in regards to their morality. Galandy is the id, being the most arrogant and sadistic among the three. Borahorn is the ego, being more cautious and respectful, but no less cruel when facing an enemy of Baran. And Larhart is the superego, being the most moral and honorable of them, disliking needless violence and the only one to make a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Informed Ability: The three of them are said to be as strong as the generals from the Dark Army and equals to Baran himself, who's considered the strongest general of the entire army. However, while Larhart proves to be a genuine threat, both Borahorn and Galdandy are easily dominated by Hyunckel (a former general of the Dark Army) without any problem, with their only display of superiority being against Popp, who also gets to kill Galdandy of a single attack after having almost all of his magic power drain off by his feathers no less, putting that claim to doubt.
  • Land, Sea, Sky: Galdandy, Borahorn and Larhart are respectively known as the Dragon Rider of the Sky, the Sea and the Land. Fittingly, Galdandy is a anthropomorphic bird that rides a flying dragon, Borahorn is an anthropomorphic walrus who rides a sea dragon and Larhart rides land dragons.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Although they're all villains, their morality is very different. Larhart is "the nice" as the most honorable of the three and opts to give Popp and Hyunckel a quick and painless death, and is the only one to join the heroes in the final arc; Borahorn is "the in-between" because, while not as cruel as Galdandy, he's not above using Popp to threaten Hyunckel, which Larhart finds disgraceful for a Dragon Rider; Galdandy is "the mean" because he's the most cruel of the three, in his introductory scene he flies off to burn down a human village just for kicks and, when Borahorn and Larhart decide to put Popp out of his misery, Galdandy opts to torture him some more.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: They are a group of three very strong Dragon Riders who fight the heroes while Baran goes to Dai. Once they are defeated, Popp and Hyunckel can deal with Baran with the rest of the party.
  • Undying Loyalty: They're all loyal to Baran and everything they do is for his sake, with Larhart as the most loyal of the three because he grew up with him. After Baran's death, Larhart, the only one Baran manages to resurrect while he was alive, swears loyalty to Dai in accordance to Baran's wish.

Galdandy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/galdandy2020.png

The dragon rider of the sky. Galdandy is an anthropomorphic bird and the most cruel of the three, with a huge hatred toward humans, even bigger than Baran's. He fights using a sabre and magical feathers that drains the opponents of his mana or stamina.

  • A Sinister Clue: Galdandy is lefthanded, as evidenced by him wielding his sword with his left hand. He, like his fellow Dragon Riders, also shows strong disdain for the humans, personally kills some along with his own pet Ethereal Serpent just for kicks, and nearly kills Popp when he tries to stop their advance into Teran — the only reason he doesn't manage it is because Hyunckel intercepts at the last moment.
  • Asshole Victim: While his death is pretty gruesome, having one of his wings cut and then receiving a point-blank Boom to the face that kills him instantly, considering he was a bastard with zero regard for human lives and a brutal sadist, he definitely earned that ending.
  • Bird People: Galdandy is an anthropomorphic human-size bird.
  • Blatant Lies: While Baran has gone to heal himself, Galdandy goes against his orders and quickly burns down a human village for pure sadism but comes back before Baran. The latter, however, notices the smoke coming from the village, Galdandy tries to act innocent wondering what could have happened and Baran immediately realizes it was his doing.
  • Clip Its Wings: When Hyunckel hits Galdandy with a Bloody Scryde, he also cuts off one of his wing without the latter noticing it. Popp notices it and flies off with Levizoom, which forces Galdandy to spread his wings and lose his right one, making him vulnerable for a final attack.
  • Cool Sword: Galdandy wields a sabre.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Galdandy is the most evil of the three Dragon Riders, but he's actually the only one of them to be upset, and even cry when his own dragon, Ruudo, is killed by Popp whereas Baran and the other two more or less shrug off the deaths of theirs, with Borahorn even calling them weak. This does not move Popp however, who calls him out on grieving for his dragon despite all the humans he's killed, with Galdandy getting enraged that he'd dare compare his dragon to "filthy humans".
  • Evil Is Hammy: By far the hammiest out of the three Dragon Riders and the one who enjoys being more openly evil.
  • Feather Flechettes: Galdandy can throw the feathers on his head at his opponent like little darts. While they don't hurt, they are hard to remove and weaken the enemy. The red feathers drain stamina while the white feathers drain mana.
  • Feathered Fiend: Galdandy is an anthropomorphic bird and the cruelest of the Dragon Riders, enjoying torturing his enemies and actively exterminating humans even if Baran didn't order it. The pointy feathers and his beak emphasizes his aggressive personality compared to Borahorn's and Larhart's rounder designs.
  • Glass Cannon: He's skilled with the rapier, easily dominating Popp in a fight, but his endurance is way weaker, as Popp manages to kill him with a single Boom spell concentrating all his magical power left after Galdandy's white feathers almost drained it completely.
  • Hypocrite: After Popp kills Ruudo, Galdandy gets angry for what he did to his precious dragon. Popp, however, calls him out for this and points out that Galdandy killed hundreds of humans without remorse.
  • Mana Burn: The white feathers on Galdandy's head can deplete their target's magic power. Popp is severely disadvantaged after some of these connect with him, but retains enough mana to cast two spells.
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: Downplayed. The feathers on Galdandy's head are shaped like spiky hair and their different colors set them apart from the ones that cover the rest of his body.
  • Revenge Before Reason: After Popp kills his beloved dragon partner Ruud, Galdandy makes his main goal to torture and torment the young mage as much as he can as revenge for his fallen partner instead of finishing him off as soon as possible. This ends up making Hyunckel arrive in time to save Popp, who would kill Galdandy moments later.
  • Sadist: Galdandy despises humans and finds great joy with inflicting them pain. He disobeys Baran's order to wait for him just to destroy an entire human village, getting a lot of fun from the devastation he caused, and when Larhart tells Borahorn to just finish Popp so to give him a painless death, Galdandy stops the execution for the sake of torturing him more.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Despite Baran's frequent warnings, Galdandy severely underestimate his opponents, which gets him killed by Popp with some help from Hyunckel.
  • Undignified Death: He's exploded to death by Popp, leaving his corpse with blank eyes and his tongue sticking out almost comically.

    Borahorn

Borahorn

Voiced by: Kenji Sugimura (Japanese/2020 series), Steve Olson (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/borahorn.png

The Dragon Rider of the Sea. Borahorn is a humanoid Walrus who tames sea dragons. He fights using a chained axe.

  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Borahorn is a walrus-man with blue skin, giving him a supernatural look for his fantasy race as well as reinforcing his association with the sea.
  • An Ice Person: Borahorn's main tactic is freezing his enemies with his Glacial Breath and then shattering them with his chain.
  • Attack the Mouth: Larhart finishes him off by throwing his spear into his mouth.
  • Badass Cape: Borahorn is already large and imposing, but his cape make him appear even larger and indicates that he's not just a mook.
  • Beast Man: Although his race is never named, Borahorn is an anthropomorphic walrus with blue skin.
  • Breath Weapon: Borahorn can spew Glacial Breath from his mouth to freeze the opponent.
  • The Brute: Among the three Dragon Riders, he's the biggest, bulkiest and the one who uses pure power to destroy his opponents compared to the finesse of Galdandy and Larhart in the rapier and the spear respectively.
  • Chain Pain: He wields a chain in combat, which he often uses in conjunction with his Glacial Breath to shatter his enemies.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Suffers a devastating defeat from Hyunckell, who cuts off his fangs with a Razor Wind, blocks his punch, kicks him in the stomach, tanks his Glacial Breath, which is supposedly as strong as Kacrackle, with his Dark Armour, and then finishing him with his Bloody Scrythe. However, it doesn't kill Borahorn, who gets up after Hyunckel has defeated Larhart.
  • Dirty Coward: After revealing he's Not Quite Dead after his Curb-Stomp Battle from Hyunckel, he takes Popp hostage and threatens to crush his skull unless Hyunckel surrenders. Larhart has none of this.
  • Dumb Muscle: Downplayed. His fighting style is pretty straightforward and brutish, but he's smart enough to take hostages to gain an advantage in a dire situation.
  • Flat Character: While Larhart is Baran's most loyal and personal subordinate, has his past revealed and later appears in the final arc to aid the forces of the good in their final fight against Vearn and Galdandy, while not exactly the most fleshed out antagonist in the series, at least had a moment mourning his dragon partner that humanizes him a little a bit, Borahorn receives the bare minimum of stuff to make him a functional character, with his past unrevealed and having zero stand-out moments to expand on his personality other than being a big, brutish antagonist.
  • Made of Iron: To his credit, he's not only able to take a direct Bloody Scryde to the chest and survive, but also being tough enough to stand on his feet, take a hostage and still use his weapon to kill someone.
  • Not Quite Dead: Borahorn gets impaled by Bloody Scrythe and falls down, seemingly dead, but after Hyunckel defeats Larhart, Borahorn is up on his feet again. Larhart then kills him for good for using an unfair tactic that dishonors the Dragon Riders.
  • Put Down Your Gun and Step Away: Borahorn, in his last attempt to defeat Hyunckel, forces him to drop his sword by holding Popp, whose magic power is entirely spent at this point, hostage, so that he can deliver the killing blow onto Hyunckel. However, Larhart kills Borahorn first, disappointed that his former comrade resorted to a vile trick.
  • Wily Walrus: Borahorn is a villainous walrus-man who holds a dim view towards humans.

    Larhart

Larhart

Voiced by: Akira Ishida (Japanese/2020 series), Scott Roberts (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/larhart.png

The Dragon Rider of the Land. Larhart is a human-darkling hybrid who suffered from discrimination as child, leading to his grudge toward humans. He's an honorable fighter and the Rider most loyal to Baran. He fights using a magical spear-armor, similar to Hyunckel sword-armor.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Larhart has purple skin that denotes his inhuman heritage.
  • Anti-Villain: Especially when compared to Galdandy and Borahorn, Larhart is much nobler and has a sense of honor. He's also the only one to have an actual motivation to hate humans rather than simply being racist.
  • Back from the Dead: Larhart gets killed by Hyunckel but Baran, after his fight with Dai, has taken his three loyal subordinates with him and dropped some of his blood on their corpses with the hope to revive them. As Baran himself predicted, it worked only on Larhart, who then joins the heroes for the assault at Vearn's palace.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Larhart's loyalty to Baran comes from his childhood, when Baran was the only one who treated him well, while the humans discriminated him for his darkling heritage.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Larhart is the noblest of the Dragon Riders and is not fond of Galdandy and Borahorn's sadism, outright ordering the latter to stop messing with Popp and just impale him on his spear. He also shows a lot of sportsmanship in his duel with Hyunckel, and tells him Baran's story.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Hyunckel, both being honourable warriors who wield weapons forged by the Underworld's greatest craftsman that has the ability to give them powerful armour. They end up fighting each other and the fight ends with Hyunkel bringing out Larhart's good side.
  • Finishing Move: Larhart uses his strongest attack, Sunder Claw, to finish off his fight with Hyunckel but he survives the blow. When Larhart uses it a second time to kill Hyunckel for good, the knight redirects Larhart's own attack against himself.
  • Happily Adopted: After Larhart's mother died of an illness, Baran adopted him and treats him as if Larhart were his own flesh-and-blood family. This helps Larhart, in return, to serve Baran with Undying Loyalty.
  • Heel Realization: Has one when Hyunckel and Popp shed tears upon hearing his Dark and Troubled Past, entrusting Baran and Dai to them.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Larhart's Sunder Claw consists in him jumping at high heights and delivering a strong blow with his spear. When he uses it a second time to kill Hyunckel for good, he combines Larhart's staff with his necklace to form a cross and defeat Larhart with a Grand Cross straight to his face.
  • Honor Before Reason: Rather than letting Borahorn kill Hyunkel using Popp as an hostage, Larhart kills his comrade and explains that Borahorn's dirty strategy is disgraceful for a Dragon Rider.
  • Human-Demon Hybrid: Larhart reveals Hyunkel that he's not fully demon but actually half human, due to having a human mother and a demon father. Growing among humans, he was discriminated and resents humans for this.
  • Motive Rant: Does one on behalf of Baran, ranting to Hyunckel about how Humans Are Bastards for trying to kill him because of his power and killing his wife, Soala, in the process.
  • Noble Demon: Larhart has a strong sense of honor, he's very respectful towards Hyunkel during their fight and kills Borahorn when he attempts a hostage situation on Pop to make Hyunkel lower his guard, claiming that using an hostage is a dishonor for the Dragon Riders.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Larhart prefers to not waste time and go for the kill, as emphasized by his "quick spears" fighting style.
  • Oh, Crap!: After Hyunkel blocks his Sunder Claw, Larhart has barely the time to realize that he lost before Hyunkel counters the attack with Grand Cross and finishes him for good.

Orichalcum Royal Guards

Originally different chess pieces from the set that was made of Orichalcum, Vearn gives five pieces to Hadlar, who then gives them life with the same forbidden magic that birthed Flazzard. They are extremely loyal to their master and always act for him.

Being made of Orichalcum, they are nearly-indestructible as most spells has no effect on them and only Orichalcum weapons or extremely strong attacks can hurt them, but they can only be killed if their core is destroyed. Each has a different ability based off their respective chess piece and together form a very strong team.

    In General
  • Animate Inanimate Object: They're chess pieces made of Orichalcum, given life through magic. For this reason they claim to not be living being but simply objects in service of Hadlar. Hym eventually becomes a living being after coming back to life as the "Silver Haired Beast".
  • Anti-Villain: Although they're part of the Dark Army, the Orichalcum Royal Guards don't hold any malicious intent towards humans or Dai's party but simply follow Hadlar's orders and can be pretty affable towards those who gain their respect.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Just like Flazzard, who was born with the same spell, they can only be killed if their core is destroyed. Hym explains that their core is located in the same location of a human's heart.
  • Authority Equals Ass Kicking: Subverted. Initially, the heroes think that the Royal Guards' levels of strength follow the chess pieces and believe that Hym, the pawn, is the weakest while Albinass, the queen, is the strongest. Albinass however confutes it and says that every piece has its own strengths and weaknesses, thus there isn't a stronger or weaker one. Indeed, when Popp shuffles the duels pairings each party member gets the upper hand by playing with their respective Royal Guard's weakness.
  • Can't Live Without You: They are born from Hadlar's magic and thus their lives depend on his; if Hadlar dies, they would die as well. Hym remains the only Royal Guard alive after Hadlar's death because he inherited his spirit.
  • Chess Motif: They're chess pieces given life, and each of them is a different one. This gives everyone a different ability and personality based off the respective chess piece.
    • Hym is the Pawn and the most eager to fight, reflecting how pawns are usually the pieces who advance first in a game. He also has the ability to be promoted into other chess pieces, including Hadlar, the King.
    • Albinass is the Queen and usually remain in the sideline to give order, just like queens in chess advance later. Like the queen piece, who is the most movable piece, Albinass is the fastest royal guard. Maam exploits her motif via finding out that, just like the queen piece, Albinass is weaker when she advances.
    • Fenbren is the Bishop.
    • Sygma is the Knight and has a horse-like head.
    • Block is the Rook and is the sturdiest and most defensive Royal Guard. Although he's actually the fastest one and, like the rook piece, he can do "castling" and switch place with Hadlar.
  • Chrome Champion: The Royal Guards are made of orichalcum, a nearly indestructible metal, and their bodies are fully metallic and shiny.
  • Explaining Your Power to the Enemy: They explain most of their abilities and their weakness to the party in part out of respect for their opponent and in part because they're confident to win anyway.
  • Foil: They offer a contrast to Flazzard, which was made by Hadlar before his maturity into a more noble fighter, signifying the two stages of his character of prior and after this development. Unlike Flazzard, which represents Hadlar's earlier characterization as the dirty, psychotic and ambitious side at the start of the series, the Royal Guards represents his more noble side who represent his more courageous and respectful aspect of his development.
  • Made of Indestructium: They are made of Orichalcum, the most resistant material in the Dragon Quest universe, and, unless it's immensely powerful, any attack or spell would have no effect on them. Only weapons made of Orichalcum can hurt them or incredibly powerful spells. After witnessing Hym's resistance, the entire party trains hard to have a chance against them. To make things even harder, they can only be killed if their core is destroyed.
  • No Biological Sex: The Royal Guards are chess pieces brought to life and not biological beings, thus they don't have a sex. Albinass claims to identify as a woman simply because her designated piece is the queen.
  • Not Afraid to Die: The Royal Guards wouldn't hesitate to throw away their life for Hadlar. When Mystvearn and Killvearn holds them hostages, Hadlar tells Vearn that he doesn't care what they do to them, because he knows his Royal Guards have no fear to die for his sake, and because if he die they would die too anyway.
  • Praetorian Guard: They are elite orichalcum soldiers, each as strong as a General, created with the purpose to serve and protect Hadlar. Their metallic body makes them appear even more noble and badass.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: The orichalcum Royal Guards are a team of warriors created by Vearn for Hadlar and the party must fight them before reaching Hadlar himself.
  • Undying Loyalty: Each of them is fully loyal to Hadlar and everything they do is for his sake; even if they act on their own, they still do it to help their master. Hym tells Hadlar that each of them would gladly throw away their life for him.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Being chess pieces brought to life, the Royal Guards don't take issue when they're damaged because Hadlar can "heal" all the damage with a spell. When they return from their first encounter with Dai's party, Hadlar notices they're all severely damaged but quickly puts them back to full health.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Inverted. The party treats the Royal Guards as living beings and feel pity for them and their sacrifices, while the Orichalcum soldiers instead claim to be objects at the service of Hadlar. Albinass even says to not have a gender, but simply plays the role of "queen".

    Hym

Hym

Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki (Japanese/2020 series), Griffin Cork (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hym.png

The Pawn of the Orichalcum Royal Guards. Very arrogant and hot blooded compared to his partners, but with a strong sense of honor. He's described as the most similar to Hadlar in terms of personality and, just like Hadlar with Dai, Hym develops an interest to personally defeat Hyunckel.

  • An Arm and a Leg: After Hyunckel destroys his shoulder, Hym asks Fenbren to cut off his then-useless arm to lose dead weight. Hadlar later regrows it.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: As he doesn't possesses any weapon, Hym fights barehanded. He's much stronger than every human and most weapon, and can make his punches even stronger by heating up his fists. His lack of weapons, compared to the other Royal Guards, denote his status as the Pawn piece, which is the simplest one in chess.
  • Blood Knight: While usually stoic like his companions, Hym becomes very energetic when fighting is involved. He enjoys a lot fighting and is the first one to dive into a brawl whenever there's a chance. He desires to have a fight against a worthy opponent, which he finds in Hyunckel.
  • Came Back Strong: Hym uncosciously uses his pawn ability to be reborn into a stronger piece after being defeated by Hyunckel. When he returns, Hym has inherited Hadlar's spirit and became "The Silver-haired Beast", a living being much stronger than Hym.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After Hyunckel beats a reborn Hym in a fist fight, the latter joins the heroes for good and becomes a valuable member for the fight against Mystvearn and later Vearn himself.
  • Emotional Bruiser: Hym enjoys a lot of fighting and is also the royal guard that shows his emotions the most. He's very emotive when he proclaims his devotion to Hadlar or desire to fight a worthy opponent.
  • Enhanced Punch: Hym can heat up his fists to make his punches even stronger. The heat alone is strong enough to melt a magic staff by simply holding it.
  • Handicapped Badass: Even without an arm, Hym is able to keep Dai on the defensive.
  • Jack of All Stats: Every Royal Guard has his own strength, like Block's defense, Fenbren's attack and Albinass' speed. Hym, however, being the pawn piece, doesn't have a particular strength or weakness and is more balanced overall.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Justified because he's a orichalcum soldier. When Hyunckel destroys his left shoulder, Hym simply shrugs it off and asks Fenbren to cut off his arm since it has become useless.
  • No-Sell:In his first appearance, Hym gets hit by Zaboera's powered up spell, which was meant to kill Dai, and remains unscathed, showing that orichalcum is immune to any spell (except Medroa).
  • Opponent Instruction: Out of respect for having actually pierced him, Hym explains the party that he and the other orichalcum soldiers can be killed only if their core is hit, which is located where the heart is supposed to be. He later adds that knowing it doesn't give them any advantage since living beings have the same weakness.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: After he's reborn as "the Silver-haired Beast", Hym's helmet breaks and reveals a long mane of flowing hair, just like Hadlar's.
  • Sand In My Eyes: When Hadlar, very surprised, points to Hym that he's crying, the latter shakes the tears away and denies it, not out of embarrassment but unbelief that a living orichalcum soldier could cry.
  • Smug Super: Hym is very confident to win against Zaboera and then Nova and, in both istances, he wins with barely a scratch. He does recognize an opponent's strength, though, and learns to not underestimate the Hero's party.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: After Hyunckel pierces him, Hym wants to get even on him and defeat him in a duel. While fighting Dai's party, Hym tells his companions to fight anyone they want but Hyunckel.
  • Tears from a Stone: While declaring to Hadlar that they would gladly throw away their lives for him, Hym cries. Hadlar and Albinass are surprised but Hym denies them, claiming he can't cry because he's just a living orichalcum statue.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: While all of the Royal Guards are created by Hadlar, and thus are kinda like his children, it's been stated that Hym visually resembles Hadlar the most, sharing the same face. The visual similarity denote how Hym is also the Royal Guard closer to Hadlar in terms of personality as well, sharing his sense of honor in combat and desire to fight a worthy opponent. Hym's resemblance to Hadlar grows even further when he grows long hair.
  • Villainous Rescue: By Hadlar's orders, Hym saves Dai (and Popp) from Zaboera's attack and promptly defeats the evil mage, explaining that Dai can't be killed by anyone but his master, Hadlar.

    Sigma

Sigma

Voiced by: Chikahiro Kobayashi (Japanese/2020 series), Hiro Kanagawa (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sigma_2.png

The Knight of the Orichalcum Royal Guards. Sigma is a very calm and strong warrior. He fights with a jousting lance and wields the Shakal's Mirror special shield able to reflect every spell, no matter how strong it is, making him the worst enemy for a mage.

  • Affably Evil: By far the most easygoing of the Royal Guards. He treats his enemies with respect and seriousness and is the first opponent Popp faces who never underestimates him for his outward cowardice and fear, matching his resolve and determination till the end. He takes his defeat pretty well too, congratulating Popp as a Worthy Opponent before perishing.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Crocodine cuts off Sigma's left arm to remove him Shalal's Mirror.
  • Arm Cannon: His right hand can be detached to use a cannon hidden in the arm.
  • Attack Reflector: Sigma has a magical shield known as Shahal's Mirror, that he describes as the ultimate shield. The shield can absorb and redirect any spell throw at it, even the immensely powerful Medroa. Shalal's Mirror is not part of Sigma and it doesn't disappear after his death. Popp then takes it and uses it to counter Vearn's ultimate attack.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Sigma is defeated by Popp who uses his anti-spell shield against himself.
  • Mage Killer: With the Shahal's Mirror, that reflects back every spell, Sigma is specialized to fight against mages. To defeat him, Popp has to use a careful and well-planned strategy.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: Sigma's eyes lack any pupils and are fully metallic, making him resemble more a chess piece.
  • Non-Human Head: Sygma has a humanoid body but, unlike the other Orichalcum Royal Guards, who have either human or robotic heads, his head is that of a metallic horse, like the knight piece in chess.
  • Shoulders of Doom: Sigma has large shoulder to give him a more powerful knight-like appearance.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Seeing that Popp is still moving after having beaten him multiple times, Sigma asks him if he's actually a human and comments that his persistence goes against all reason. He later finds out that Popp can cast healing spells on himself.
  • Worthy Opponent: During their final fight, Sigma tells Popp that he has been genuinely impressed by his persistence and wit and admits that he cannot go easy on him.

    Fenbren

Fenbren

Voiced by: Koji Yusa (Japanese/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fenbren.png

The Bishop of the Orichalcum Royal Guards. Prides himself to be an excellent hunter and is very prideful and cruel, a remnant of Hadlar's old characterization.

Fenbren fights using the blades that make up his body and wind spells to attack distant enemies.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Fenbren's body is made for the most part of orichalcum blades, which cut other orichalcum parts with ease.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: As Fenbren is mostly made of blades, his forearms, which are his main way to attack, are basically two sharp swords.
  • Blow You Away: Fenbren is able to cast wind spells, creates a vortex to stop Chiu's flying escape, and forms tornadoes while underwater to fight Dai and Baran.
  • Bullying a Dragon: After Baran blinds him and quickly proves his superiority, Fenbren looks for him and challenges him anyway, driven by his pride. Then he's quickly killed by Dai as he tries to surprise Baran.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: While hunting Chiu, Fenbren admits that he follows orders to not upset things, but he's also very cruel and enjoys hurting weaker individuals.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Fenbren is clever enough to not face head-on enemies stronger than him. He attacks Baran after removing him his sword and from behind a rock to catch him by surprise. Unfortunately for him, Dai intervenes and kills him.
  • Eye Scream: Right when Fenbren is about to kill Chiu, Baran stabs him in the eyes, blinding him. This drives Fenbren into looking for revenge.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: His chest has a characteristic crescent moon shape, with the right half being noticeably longer than the left one.
  • Fatal Flaw: Fenbren's pride and arrogance led him to his death. After Baran blinds him, Fenbren decides to challenge him at all costs and gets quickly killed. Hadlar even comments how Fenbren inherited his previous flaws, and that they may still be in him in a small part.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: While Fenbren does a surprise attack against Baran, Dai dashes in and cuts him in half, killing him.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In the animated adaptation, Fenbren's eyes become red when he goes for the kill, emphasizing his dangerousness and cruelty.
  • Revenge: After being blinded by Baran, Fenbren vows to take his revenge, going as far to act against Hadlar's orders, and intentionally keeps his scarred eyes to fuel his anger. This leads to him facing Dai and Baran, far too strong for him, and being the first member of the Orichalcum Royal Guard to die.
  • Sadist: Fenbren is very cruel and takes great pleasure into killing his enemies in the slowest and most painful way possible. Rather than immediately killing Chiu, Fenbren slowly pierces him with his arm, which gives Chiu enough time to be saved.
  • A Scar to Remember: Although he could've gotten his eyes healed by Hadlar, Fenbren tells Baran that he kept the scar he inflicted him to fuel his desire for revenge.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Fenbren is made for the most part of blades, giving his design much more edginess that underlines his crueler and least honorable personality compared to the other Royal Guards.
  • This Cannot Be!: Fenbren is incredulous that someone apparently weak like Gome deformed his orichalcum body, and decides to kill the slime out of revenge and because it could be too dangerous.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Fenbren is the most aggressive of the Royal Guards and, by Hadlar's own admission, the one to have kept some hints of Hadlar's previous personality before his Character Development. His cockiness and desire of ambition make him the least submissive Royal Guard and leads him to his death much earlier than his companions.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Downplayed. Fenbren lasts a few chapters, enough to show off his abilities and personality, but dies much earlier compared to the other Royal Guards.
  • You Are a Credit to Your Race: Fenbren admits that he's impressed by Chiu's determination to fight him, even if he's only a rat, and for this reason he would enjoy torturing him even more.

    Block

Block

Voiced by: Tokuyoshi Kawashima (Japanese/2020 series), Paul Dobson (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/block_7.png

The Rook of the Orichalcum Royal Guards. Block doesn't talk and always remains quiet. He's the strongest orichalcum soldier in terms of physical strength and the most defensive one, often protecting his companions from deadly attacks.

  • 24-Hour Armor: Block's body is actually his armor, while the true Block is actually a slim orichalcum soldier. He reveals his true body only when he has to switch position with Hadlar.
  • The Brute: Block is by far the largest and strongest member of the Guards in what physical strength refers. He also is the only one who never speaks but simply follows his companions. Subverted because Block is actually smarter and much smaller than what he appears to be.
  • Faster Than They Look: Block is the bulkiest and physically strongest Royal Guard, befitting for the Rook piece, which makes him look like the slowest one as well. However, Block is actually the fastest Royal Guard, saving his companions from an explosion that not even Albinass could have avoided. Subverted because his true body actually reflects his speed.
  • Go Out with a Smile: After getting struck by Vearn's staff, Block waves goodbye to his companions, asking them to take good care of Hadlar, and peacefully smiles before exploding.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Just before the Royal Guards are about to be destroyed by Popp's Medroa, Block dives down and takes the hit, losing part of his back and becoming unable to fight. Hadlar later restores him.
    • Block uses "castling" to switch place with Hadlar and gets impaled by Vearn's staff in his place. Before exploding, Block smiles and asks his companions to take care of Hadlar for him.
  • Hidden Eyes: Block's true face has his eyes obscured, keeping his expression more stoic than his teammates.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Block gets impaled by Vearn's staff after switching position with Hadlar and explodes shortly after.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is "Block" and is the most protective Royal Guard. He saves his own teammates from Popp's Medroa and Hadlar from Vearn's spear.
  • Mighty Glacier: Block's physical strength is immense, in his introduction he casually lifts and throws a ship at the heroes and easily overpower Crocodine in combat. However, he's very slow and the weaker but faster Maam outmaneuvers him. When his companions or Hadlar are in danger, however, Block shows his true speed.
  • The Quiet One: Unlike the other Guards, Block doesn't say anything except some grunts. He only says a final line before dying, after he reveals his true self.
  • Shed Armor, Gain Speed: Block's body is very large and bulky, making him very strong and tough but also very slow. However, that body is only a large armor that contains his true body, which is nimble and extremely fast.
  • Shoulders of Doom: Block's large shield-like shoulders emphasize his physical strength and protective nature as the Rook piece.
  • Smarter Than They Look: Block is the largest Royal Guard and cannot utter any word, only grunts, making him look like a brutish warrior. Instead, he's actually able to deduce danger fast enough to save his companions twice: first from Popp's Medroa and then from a giant explosion. Hym admits to have underestimated Block's intelligence.
  • The Stoic: Aside from not speaking, Block's face is also unexpressive and robot-like, making it impossible to read any emotion on him. Even his true face keeps his eyes hidden, but his mouth is very expressive.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Block never talks, thus his teammates are very surprised when he reveals his true body and speaks before getting killed by Vearn in Hadlar's place. His only line is to ask his teammates to protect Hadlar in his place.
  • Switch-Out Move: As the Rook piece, Block is able to switch place with Hadlar, who is like the King piece, with "castling". He does it to take Vearn's attack meant for his master.
  • Taking the Bullet: Right before Vearn's spear impales Hadlar, Block uses castling to switch place with him and gets hit instead, right before bidding farewell to his teammates.

The Queen and leader of the Orichalcum Royal Guards. She also acts as Hadlar's second in command following her creation.

  • The Coats Are Off: Albinass has a large metallic dress that covers her body, she removes it for the fight against Maam when she wants to get serious, revealing to have a samurai-esque armor underneath, as well to be the fastest Royal Guard.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Unlike Hym, she doesn't has qualms taking the chance to eliminate enemies if that benefits Hadlar's goals, even if Hadlar himself would oppose such methods. She attempts to take out both Baran and Hyunckel during their duel when they are at their most vulnerable to remove two of the biggest threats for the Dark Army.
  • Contralto of Strength: Her voice is way lower than that of any other female character of the series, befitting her status as a powerful warrior and leader of the Orichalcum Royal Guards.
  • Dark Action Girl: She stands out as the only villainous female fighter in the story, being able to fight toe to toe against other combatants of the setting with efficiency and ruthlessness.
  • Death by a Thousand Cuts: After seeing how dangerous Maam's Tiger Shatter Fist is, Albinass resort to moving at supersonic speed so that she can't be hit, while slowly sapping Maam's life away with little hits. Maam exploits Albinass' speed, hitting her with her own broken chest plate's shards; although Albinass can dodge a punch, at this high speed it's impossible to dodge multiple objects aimed at her.
  • Designated Girl Fight: Albinass is the only female Royal Guard and, when they scatter to prevent Dai's teammates from interfering Dai and Hadlar's duel, she fights Maam, the only female combatant of the Hero's party.
  • The Dragon: Justified. As the Queen piece, Albinass is Hadlar's second in command, as well as the leader of the Royal Guards, coordinating them in combat.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Although Albinass is loyal to Hadlar, her main intent is doing what she believes is best for him. While Hadlar is not loyal to Vearn anymore and wants to fight Dai at his best, Albinass wants to kill the entire party and plead with Vearn to save Hadlar, who has little time to live after his core is removed.
  • Flash Step: When she removes her dress, Albinass is able to move fast enough that it looks like she's teleporting. Maam comments that she can't even see her movements.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: Without her dress, Albinass Thousand Needles's energy concentrates in a single spot, becoming the Legionsphere, a sphere of energy she can throw at her opponent, exploding on impact.
  • Flechette Storm: Her spell Thousand Needles releases a lot of tiny light projectiles from her body that quickly overwhelm the enemy upon landing.
  • Fragile Speedster: The Queen piece is the one with the highest mobility, therefore Albinass is the fastest Orichalcum Guard. However, as Maam realizes it, Albinass becomes (relatively, she's still made of Orichalcum) vulnerable when she attacks at high speed which is why she generally remains on the sideline and let her teammates fight. Once Maam manages to hit Albinass with Orichalcum shards, she quickly finishes her.
  • Graceful Loser: After being mortally wounded by Maam, she resigns to her fate and accepts her end, telling Maam to watch the last moments of Hadlar in her place as a last wish.
  • Light 'em Up: While performing her Thousand Needles spell, her body glows in a yellow light that she then releases at the enemy in the shape of multiples darts.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Her love for Hadlar ends driving her more insane and ruthless when it turns out he’s gonna die of the sequels of having the Black Core nearly killing him, even considering betraying Hadlar’s desire to have a last fight with Dai so she can have Vearn give Hadlar a second chance and save his life.
  • More Deadly Than the Male: Subverted. Initially, the heroes that Albinass is the strongest Orichalcum Royal Guards, being the queen piece, the strongest piece in chess. Albinass herself explains that there isn't a stronger piece but everyone has its strengths and weaknesses. However, Albinass tends to command the other Royal Guards and is, by her own admission, the fastest one.
  • Not So Stoic: Her stoic persona breaks when Hadlar becomes fated to die due to the effects of the Black Core. She becomes way more emotional and unhinged, sporting several deranged smiles as she keeps beating Maam.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Popp is about to hit the Royal Guards with Medroa, Albinass remains stunned and believes they're going to die. Thankfully for them, Block saves them at the last second.
  • Poisoned Weapons: In addition to her spells, she can also shoot poisonous needles towards her enemies, as she does to Hyunckel in her first battle when he's about to finish off Hym.
  • Power Limiter: Albinass explains that the dress she wears seals her limbs to save energy. When she removes it, she shows her true potential, having the mobility of both the Rook and Bishop piece and a stronger version of Thousand Needles.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Though she doesn't have an actual sex considering she's a living metallic being, she identifies as female due her role as the Queen and possesses both a female appearance and voice. This makes her not just the only female of the Orichalcum Royal Guards but of the Dark Army as a whole. Outside of Zurbon, who becomes good-ish after her first appearance, Albinass is the only female villain of the series.
  • The Stoic: Albinass is the coldest and most composed of the Orichalcum Royal Guards, at best showing some smiles of arrogance. It makes her the most suited for commanding the Royal Guards, as she never loses her temper during a fight.
  • The Strategist: In combat, Albinass tends to remain on the sidelines and give orders to her teammates, only joining the fight much later, similar to how in chess the queen moves after the other pieces.
  • Token Evil Teammate: After Fenbren's demise, she more or less takes the role of being the most openly evil member among Hadlar's Royal Guard. Unlike Hym and Sigma, she's willing to disobey the will of her master if that can save his life and is neither honorable or merciful, even willing to attempt a bargain with Vearn (the person who literally fated Hadlar to certain death) to save Hadlar by killing all of Avan's disciples).
  • Yandere: Albinass is so madly in love with Hadlar she plans to kill all of Avan’s disciples herself to convince Vearn of saving his life, not caring how many she has to kill for that to happen.
