A Bunny-Ears Lawyer who acts buffoonish and eccentric while being genuinely powerful or just be pretending to be buffoonish. In truth, he is the hero that defeated Hadlar years ago and would later train Dai to defeat the revived Hadlar and his master, Vearn, but resorts to a Heroic Sacrifice in order to kill his Arch-Enemy, only to be the only one to be killed. Avenging his death as well as inheriting his desire for justice is what motivates his disciples going into their quest.

It later turns out that he's Not Quite Dead and was secretly aiding them all along until the final arc, in which he reveals himself to aid his disciples to take down Vearn once and for all.

  • The Ace: At the beginning, he's considered the best at everything. Subverted at the end, since every single one of his disciples has become way stronger than him in his or her specialty.
  • Back for the Finale: He disappears for most of the main plot...but just before the final battle, the heroes discover he was Not Quite Dead.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Downplayed. He's a childish, odd-looking goofball with a well-deserved reputation as the World's Best Warrior, but he tends to exhibit both at the same time rather than letting one hide the other. He does get a bit more dangerous when he gets completely serious, but he's so obviously capable despite his general lack of dignity that nobody's ever especially surprised.
  • Breakout Character: Avan's popularity earned him an official spinoff prequel manga to coincide with the debut of the anime.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's extremely competent in pretty much every field, but pays zero regard to his own dignity, and will happily be as strange and childish as he wants while performing phenomenal feats of strength, speed, and magical power.
  • Can't Catch Up: Avan knew he was outclassed by the new Demon Army and that his disciples had the potential to be far stronger than him, so he let them travel on their own to avenge him while he acquired as many support spells and items as possible in secret to help them out later. Thanks to this, on top of holding his own at Vearn's Palace, Avan disables most of the fortress' barriers and traps to let Dai reach Vearn in top condition.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He always seems to have the right magic item with him.
  • Did Not See That Coming: While he had his suspicions that Hadlar had come back or someone else stepped up to his position, he didn't expect the dark god Vearn to have resurrected Hadlar and for the returning Dark Lord to be even stronger than fifteen years prior. The result is getting caught right after he had used the intensive and draining Puff spell to help train Dai, and requiring his Heroic Sacrifice for Dai and Popp to even hope to survive the encounter.
  • Disney Death: His Heroic Sacrifice against Hadlar is the climax of the first real Plot Arc. Turns out, he wasn't dead at all.
  • The Dreaded: Is this to Vearn and Kill-Vearn, and many of their underlings.
    • To put things in perspective: Vearn's first order to Hadlar in the plot was explicitly to kill Avan, before starting anything else, and Hadlar getting rid of him was judged enough of a worthy accomplishment that he was granted a consequential Power-Up.
    • When Hadlar screwed up killing Avan's disciples several times, and committing a major screw-up with his plotting to keep his position, and not disclosing vital information such as Dai being a Dragon Knight, eventually leading to Baran's (the strongest General by far) betrayal and potential threat towards Vearn, he is on the verge of a You Have Failed Me scenario, yet Vearn still commends Hadlar's achievement in killing Avan, considering it worthy enough that he grants him a final chance and an eventual pardon. For Hadlar, defeating Avan was the gift that kept on giving.
    • When it is revealed that he actually did not die at all, everyone in the room observing the scene goes dead silent, including the usually wise-cracking Kill-Vearn (In the 2020 anime, he outright nears a Villainous Breakdown, screaming "HOW?!), who promptly switches to a no-nonsense mindset, going after him relentlessly, undergoing Evil Make Over to drive the point home that he is taking him very seriously after getting his smiling mask broken, and pulling every nasty trick in the book to try to get rid of him for good, because he is THAT unpredictable. THIS is how feared he is by Vearn and his associates, as a mere human.
  • Dub Name Change: His name was changed to "Ivan" in some dubs of the 1991 anime adaptation.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Being a Bunny-Ears Lawyer and The Mentor at the same time, he ends up as this.
  • Given Name Reveal: The prequel reveals Avan's surname is "Zinuar" when Roka explains the reason the hero acts distant and hides his capabilities is to keep from being treated as an outcast like his prophet ancestor did.
  • Gratuitous English: Part of his Obfuscating Stupidity.
  • Gratuitous French: Part of his Obfuscating Stupidity.
  • Happily Married: Implied at the end: he is shown ruling Carl with Flora.
  • Hero of Another Story: He was the hero who defeated Hadlar the first time. At the time of the story, he's the mentor.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He uses a suicide spell to try to protect his disciples from Hadlar. Subverted: it is later revealed that he survived the blast.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: The prequel establishes the first Strash that blew Hadlar off Flora's castle was done in the spur of the moment and as such Avan couldn't perform it correctly or consistently afterwards, though he intuited it required expertise in all aspects of combat and set off to master them.
  • Irony: In the beginning of the story, he used the Suicide Attack spell Megante to try to kill his arch-enemy Hadlar. Much later, when he's forced to use the spell again, he survives because he's covered in Hadlar's ashes, after the latter saved his and his disciples' lives.
  • Magic Knight: Very proficient in both physical combat and various kinds of magic.
  • Master Swordsman: He has no superhuman strength, speed or endurance, but he does have absolutely flawless technique.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: He's forced to sacrifice himself before he can complete Dai's training. Subverted: he actually survived and went into hiding.
  • Nerd Glasses: Given to him by Flora. They help him hide his intelligence. He typically takes them off when talking seriously and even left them with Flora for the duration of his journey to defeat Hadlar.
  • No One Could Survive That!: Avan survives his own Megante thanks to an amulet gifted to him by Flora, without even knowing it had such an effect. He then survives another Megante from a duel judge robot, much to Kill-Vearn's shock, because the ashes from when Hadlar died coated his body, offering some protection from the blast.
  • Not Quite Dead: Normally, the Megante spell kills the user. Without knowing, Avan had just the right magic amulet to survive it.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He likes to keep his skills and intelligence hidden, for various reasons. The prequel establishes it's mostly because his entire family was driven away from the royal line because one of his ancestors was an unfairly feared prophet.
  • The Paladin: Fights for good? Check. Swordsmanship skills? Check. Use of defensive White Magic? Check! Avan's a more eccentric version but fits the archetype nevertheless.
  • Passing the Torch: To his disciples and their allies.
  • Red Is Heroic: His standard outfit.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Occasionally when he's about to get serious.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: He gives his life to kill Hadlar, but the latter survives the attack with no major damage - although he is weakened to the point that Dai manages to drive him off. Subverted in that Avan survived the blast as well.
  • Supreme Chef: When he's not fighting demons or chasing butterflies, he's teaching the castle cooks how to cook meals that not just taste amazing but also improve the body's health.
  • Taking You with Me: Tries this on Hadlar, but it fails. Subverted in that he survives as well.
  • Trickster Mentor:
    • He'd rather make his disciples figure out how to use new skills themselves than explain them the details.
    • One of the reasons he doesn't tell Dai and Popp he's not dead is that he thinks they would subconsciously rely on him and stunt their own growth.
  • Worf Had the Flu: His ill-fated battle with Hadlar was right after he had used the MP-intensive Puff to transform into a dragon for training Dai, on top of the fifteen year passage of time where despite spreading his teachings the years of peace rusted his capabilities.

     Merle

Voiced by: Chieko Nanba (Japanese/1991 series), Yoshimi Ohara (Japanese/2020 series), Marina Huerta (Latin American Spanish/1991 series), Lili Beaudoin (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/merle_7.png

A young girl with strong Psychic Power, she travels with her grandmother Nabara prior to meeting up with the heroes and joining them soon afterwards.

     Nova

Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese), Adrian Petriw (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nova_0.png

The son of a general of the fallen kingdom of Ringaia, Nova meets Dai and the others before the battle between the forces of the nations and the Demon Army. He is initially an arrogant Jerkass to the heroes but quickly changes his tune upon finding out how outclassed he is.

  • Cast from Hit Points: He can make his Aura Sword extremely powerful... at the cost of his own life.
  • Determinator: He manages to impress even Dai with this, during their first fight against the Royal Guard.
  • Heroic Wannabe: He thinks he's the "true hero" and Dai is a fake. He changes his mind pretty quickly.
  • Hero of Another Story: It's implied that while Dai was fighting his battles, Nova was having other adventures in the North.
  • Humble Pie: His utterly humiliating defeat (and potential near death) by the Shinei Kidan yanks him out of his Heroic Wannabe attitude.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's quite the Jerkass when he first meets Dai and the others, but they're still quite impressed by his determination and willingness to sacrifice himself to save people from demons.
  • Odd Friendship: At the end, he develops one of these with Lon Beruk.

     Chiu

Voiced by: Shun Horie (Japanese), Cole Howard (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chiy_8.png

A mouse monster who trains under Brokeena alongside Maam, he joins the heroes when Maam rejoins them.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Not as strong as Maam, but he is one nonetheless.
  • Benevolent Boss: Chiu treats his underlings with nothing but respect, never asks them to do something impossible and he's always willing to risk his own life to protect them from serious harm. Because of this, his underlings practically worship him, and even Crocodine thinks he will be a better Beast King than him.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Played for Laughs with regard to the assorted items he carries with him all the time. Having said that, this allowed him to help Dai and win a hopeless battle during his introduction.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: With the aid of the Beast King's Flute, monsters that are summoned by it serve as his teammates/underlings after Chiu defeats them.
  • The Determinator: He tries relentlessly to attack the transformed Zamza, not stopping no matter how times he gets knocked down. This serves a benefit, as it actually tires Zamza out and helps Popp notice that his second mouth is also needed to breathe, allowing them to rescue Dai by flinging a fire spell at his and suffocate to the point of opening his second mouth.
  • Encounter Bait: The Beast King's Flute functions this way, as using it causes monsters that hear it to confront him in battle, but the monsters that are defeated in said battles would become his teammates/underlings afterwards.
  • Foil: To Crocodine.
    • Size is the first, and most easily recognized contrast: Crocodine is a Gentle Giant, while Chiu is Fun Size.
    • Crocodine is a strong fighter, even if he becomes Overshadowed by Awesome by the end of the series, whereas Chiu proves to be lacking in fighting capacity and eventually finds his real talent in leadership skills instead.
  • Fun Size: He's one head shorter than even Dai, who's the smallest and shortest among the main heroes.
  • Funny Animal: With a heavy emphasis on "funny".
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: He wished to be a powerful martial artist, but eventualy had to accept he had no talent for that. Instead, his true talent turned out to be his amazing strategy and leadership skills, which allowed him to turn his small army of weak monsters into a very effective unit that helped to save the day more than once.
    • His leadership skills are so great that with just a few words he can dispell fear and boost his army's morale through the roof, and he can be so inspirational than even enemy monsters feel touched by his words. At the end of the story, he ends up recruiting the powerful Hym, aka Hadlar's reincarnation into his army.
  • Interspecies Romance: Towards Maam. It's entirely one-sided on his part, as Maam sees him as a teammate and a friend — nothing more. He moves on eventually.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He might be brash, aggressive and hot-headed individual, but he's willing to do anything to help and protect his friends from the Dark Army.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: His role outside of battles is mostly this.
  • Reformed Criminal: More like "reformed monster", as Chiu is a mouse monster that used to cause mischief in a village somewhere in Romos before Brokeena caught him, trained him, and helped him reform.
  • Team Pet
  • Use Your Head: His headbutt can dent/damage standard armor. He also proves how sturdy his head is when a sword-wielding Animated Armor strikes him on the head using its sword, with the sword breaking from the impact as the result.

Kingdoms

     Queen Flora

Voiced by: Rie Takahashi (Japanese)

Flora is the queen of the kingdom of Carl, which is among the nations destroyed by the Dark Army. She's absent when Leona tries to gather the remaining human nations, but appears late in the story to help the heroes to fight back.

  • Balcony Speech: Needed to bring humanity to raise again when Dai seems dead and all hope seems lost.
  • The High Queen: A strong, dignified and determined woman.
  • Hope Bringer: She was this to people back in the prequel when Hadlar raised his own demon army to conquer the world.
  • Lady of War: When necessary, she can bring out her whip and kill some monsters. In fact, the prequel shows that she is no stranger to fighting at the front to rally people.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She does everything she can to support the heroes, aware they are the only ones that can actually defeat Vearn.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: While the heroes fight on the front line, she helps gather all the remaining forces of humanity.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the prequel story, she could not join Avan in his quest to save the world due to having to take care of the kingdom in her sick father's stead. In the present, she actively contributes to saving the world and even briefly joins the heroes in acquiring the sacred spell.
  • Tough Leader Façade: She's actually very shaken from Avan's death, but she can't let it show.
  • Tsundere: Makes a couple of passive-aggressive comments at Avan when she sees him again, as he's been avoiding her for years.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Nobody is ever shown disagreeing with her.
  • Weapon Specialization: Her weapon of choice is a whip, that she can use to defeat a lot of weak monsters in a single strike.

     Amy, Apollo, and Marin

Amy
Apollo
Marin

The three sages who serve under Leona. Collectively, they are known as the Papnica Troika.

  • Action Girl: Both Amy and Marin are spell-casting sages.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Amy delivers one to Hyunckel after he's been seriously injured and the party is going off to face another battle. She even tries to hide his Dark Armour Spear so that he wouldn't be able to fight anymore.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Played with regarding Marin. She suffers severe burns in the face when Flazzard grabs her by the face with his fiery hand. After the heroes rescue Leona, she uses her healing spell to restore Marin's face back to its original state.
  • Expy: All three of their designs are references to the Sage vocation from Dragon Quest III.
  • Out of Focus: Apollo and Marin tend to get less attention when compared to Amy, especially once Amy gets entangled in a Love Triangle that involves herself, Maam, and Hyunckel.
  • Satellite Character: Apollo and Marin basically revolve around serving Leona. Once Leona joins the main heroes, they are more or less Out of Focus, appearing only occasionally for plot-relevant purposes.

     Baduck

Voiced by: Aruno Tahara (Japanese/1991 series), Yohei Tadano (Japanese/2020 series), Declan O'Reilly (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baduck.png

An aged fencer in Papnica, he's the first person from said kingdom that Dai, Popp, and Maam meet after entering its borders. He can put up a decent fight despite his old age and lack of magical skills, also has a knack for crafting useful items and is surprisingly good at repairing magic weapons.

  • Badass Normal: He's just an old fencer wearing normal equipment, but he can put up a really decent fight against powerful enemies and can survive through crazy dangerous battles without becoming a burden.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's old, but he can support the heroes with his decent fencing skills, can craft/repair special items for them when the need arises and is also a pretty fun person to hang around with. On top of that, he is pretty good spotting when someone is in need of some encouraging words.
  • Foil: To Akim. Both Baduck and Akim are sword-wielding, Badass Normal Magically Inept Fighters who have battled alongside each other, with Myst-Vearn's attack with the Giant Demon Castle being the earliest occasion, but Baduck is an Old Soldier and a Cool Old Guy with a wide array of skills outside of battling, even if he's not the best at them, whereas Akim is a much-younger squadron captain with a no-nonsense demeanor and a lack of display in capacities besides fighting.
  • Master of None: He has considerable breadth of talent, but not much depth, and while he's minimally capable of pretty much anything and everything, and always finds some way to be of use, there's nothing he's truly great at.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Downplayed. While he is obviously inflating his own abilities to try sounding impressive, he's always at least somewhat competent in every field he claims to be a genius at, from combat to engineering, and that's useful in its own right.
  • Old Soldier: He's old, and his armor/sword are in bad shape, revealing his experience on the battlefield. He still can put up a good fight and share his experience to guide the heroes when they feel lost.
  • Renaissance Man: Downplayed. He's not the genius polymath he claims to be, but he's moderately capable at absolutely everything. If there's a task that needs doing and everyone else is either incapable or otherwise occupied, then Baduck can be relied upon to do a reasonably OK job.
  • Ridiculously Potent Explosive: Has the knowledge and ability to create two crazy powerful bombs able to destroy a magic tower. The only reason why this skill isn't brought up a second time is because Baduck simply never again has access to the components needed to create more bombs.
  • The Blacksmith: While it's not his official title or main line of work, he has some capacity for it.

     Akim

Voiced by: Kanehira Yamamoto (Japanese/2020 series), Matt Ellis (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akhim.png

Akim is the captain of the tank squadron in the kingdom of Bengarna. While he acts rather cold and haughty initially, the circumstances see him softening up to the heroes over time.

  • Badass Normal: Despite being a Magically Inept Fighter himself, he has enough sword-fighting skills to qualify him for the title of the tank squadron captain and manages to survive through some tough struggles without becoming The Load.
  • Bald Head of Toughness: Though his baldness is not shown initially due to his helmet, Akim does, indeed, have the scalp of a cue ball. Considering that he leads a military squadron, he's fairly badass himself for an ordinary human, showing unwavering mental determination to aid the king and kingdom of Bengarna he serves under and sufficient fighting capacity to carry himself through many a battle.
  • Foil: To Baduck.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: When the king of Bengarna orders him to attack the Giant Demon Castle with the tank squadron he leads when the latter is invading Papnica, Crocodine tries to stop him, arguing that attacking the Giant Demon Castle with his vastly outclassed tank squadron is a Senseless Sacrifice. Akim, however, insists on going ahead with the attack, arguing that he's duty-bound to carry out the order made by the king to whom he pledges Undying Loyalty.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the king and kingdom of Bengarna.

Mentors/Masters

     Matoriv

Voiced by: Shin Aomori (Japanese/1991 series), Kazuhiro Yamaji (Japanese/2020 series), Daniel Abundis (Latin American Spanish/2020 series), Antonio Inchausti (European Spanish/1991 series), Hiro Kanagawa (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/matroniv.png

A lecherous old mage who accompanied Avan in his quest to defeat Hadlar, he lives alone in a cave on an uninhabited island sometime after Hadlar's defeat. He trains Popp after the heroes encounter him.

     Brokeena

Voiced by: Yuu Mizushima (Japanese), Neil Minor (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brokeena.png

A Bare-Fisted Monk who aided Avan in his quest to defeat Hadlar, he's the mentor to Maam and Chiu.

  • Bad Liar: He constantly lies about being deadly sick, and wears a painted bedsheet to pass himself as a monster so he could help the heroes in secret. No one is ever fooled.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: His signature style.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He tries to appear as this, though he probably went through Training from Hell in the past.
  • Cool Shades: He's never seen without his small sunglasses.
  • Cool Old Guy: Even when he's not fighting, he helps the heroes by giving them ideas.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Having an unconventional character while giving the heroes advice qualifies him for this.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Played for Laughs as a running gag, as he's always coughing and talking about how he's soon going to die from an obviously fake illness. Some flashbacks revealed he has been doing this since Avan's early hero days.
  • Martial Artists Are Always Barefoot: He's a Bare-Fisted Monk who never puts on footwear of any kind, disguised or not.
  • Old Master: He's even called "the martial arts legend" in-universe. His age doesn't let him fight for long, but he compensates with experience.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Covered himself with a bed-sheet with a hand drawn monster face as a disguise to join Chiu's army. No one was fooled, but he was allowed to join the group anyway.
  • Round Hippie Shades: His Cool Shades are dark and spherical-shaped, which help to indicate his unconventional character.

     Lon Beruk

Voiced by: Hiroki Tochi (Japanese), Jonathan Love (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lon_beruk.png

A Darkling that resides deep in a forest outside Lankarks, he's renowned for his skill as a blacksmith. The heroes seek him out when they need to secure a weapon that's suitable for Dai.

  • The Alcoholic: He's very rarely seen without a good bottle of wine.
  • The Hermit: He lives within a forest, far away from many a human presence. The heroes find him only through the help of Junk, who corresponds with him as a fellow blacksmith.
  • Living Weapon: The weapons he makes aren't just tools, but partners. They can judge an enemy's strength, teach their wielder how to use them best, and even react to attacks before said wielder notices them. When one of them encounters an enemy it's not powerful enough to defeat, it'll even return of its own accord to Lon Beruk for an upgrade.
  • Loners Are Freaks: He doesn't have many friends because of his snarky and abrasive nature.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: His flowing locks and delicately handsome features make him look more like a scholar than a swordsman-blacksmith, with only the massive Rugged Scar across his face indicating his true profession.
  • Master of All: While he prefers swords, a big part of his reputation as the Ultimate Blacksmith comes from his ability to build and wield any weapon with supreme skill.
  • Master Swordsman: This is part of why he's the Ultimate Blacksmith - his own superb martial skill makes him peerlessly talented at designing perfect weapons for perfect warriors. Not only that, but he's pretty good at training his customers in how to use his creations once he's made them.
  • Pointy Ears: They show his demonic nature.
  • Rugged Scar: The massive, X-shaped facial scar Mystvearn gave him is a much better indicator of his rough, tough personality and his centuries of experience than any other part of his appearance.
  • Scars Are Forever: He let Mystvearn scar him as punishment for insulting Vearn when he left his service decades before the start of the story. The scar's still there when the heroes meet him, and shows no obvious signs of going away.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: He created every ultimate weapon in existence except for Baran's Demon Dragon Sword, which was created by the Gods - and creating a sword which equals or surpasses that is one of his greatest ambitions.

Main Characters Relatives

     Brass

Voiced By: Isamu Tanonaka (Japanese/1991 series), Junpei Takiguchi (Japanese/1991 film), Kenichi Ogata (Japanese/2020 series), Daniel Palacios (European Spanish/1991 series), Alec Willows (English/2020 series)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unclebrass.png

A monster lump shaman who found Dai when he was washed ashore on Dermlin Island. Brass raised Dai as his own grandson and tried to teach him some spells to grow him into a mage, despite Dai's wishes to become a Hero.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the original 1991 anime, Brass had pinkish-orange skin similar to the lump shaman in the games, but the 2020 anime changed him to having light grey skin instead.
  • Ascended Extra: Brass barely appears in the main story after being taken home from Romos, but the prequel builds on a brief remark of him being familiar with Hadlar by making him one of his four top enforcers.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Zaboera casts a spell on Brass and forces him to assist Crocodine against Dai inside Romos castle, which prevents Dai from going all out to not accidentally hurt him. Popp returns Brass back to normal by casting a small purification spell around him.
  • Cool Old Guy: Brass is an old and wise monster who raised Dai with care and teaches him how the world works.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: Brass gets angry at Dai for mistaking a holy ship for a warship and alerting him for nothing.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: Unlike Dai, Brass realizes immediately that something is wrong with the (fake) heroes party, and that their eyes are not those of a hero. In hindsight, it's also because he fought the real hero when he was part of Hadlar's army.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Parent: Brass always berates Dai for wishing to become a hero and tells him to become a mage instead. However, after seeing Dai activate his Dragon Crest, Brass changes his attitude because he realizes that Dai is destined to become a hero.
  • Grumpy Old Man: Brass is an old monster and is often very grumpy, especially towards Dai, but he has many moments where he's wise and caring toward his adoptive grandson.
  • Magic Staff: Brass always carries a wooden staff which he uses to walk with (going with his elderly appearance), whack Dai when he's angry, and cast spells.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Playing with and Justified. Brass is an old lump shaman, a short monster species, and his small stature connects him to the stereotypical short elderly found in Japanese media.
  • Mr. Exposition: Justified. Brass is old and wise and has travelled the world, as well as being a paternal figure, while Dai never left Dermlin Island before the beginning of the series. In the first part of the story, whenever there's something that Dai (and the reader) doesn't know, Brass explains it.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: Given Dai's inability to cast spells despite his best effort to make Dai a spell-caster throughout most of the introduction arc, he's understandably shocked to witness Dai casting high-level spells while he activates his Dragon Crest and, after Dai reverts back to normal (and back to his old, magically-inept self), Brass wonders whether what he witnessed from Dai was real.
Brass: Maybe I was hallucinating after all...
  • Put on a Bus: Once Dai and the others leave Romos, Brass only makes a brief cameo and returns for the ending.
  • Why Couldn't You Be Different?: Throughout the introduction arc, he berates Dai for his lack of progress in spellcasting, having wished for Dai to be a great mage, while Dai himself wants to be a sword-wielding hero instead. They still love each other all the same, though.

     Junk and Steenue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jank.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stein.png

Popp's parents, who reside in the town of Lankarks, where Popp was born and raised.

  • Anger Born of Worry: After seeing Popp for the first time since he ran off, Junk really lets loose on Popp — violentlynote . Steenue and the heroes accompanying Popp end up having to intervene to stop him from inflicting more injuries on Popp than he already has. This also overlaps with Calling Out for Not Calling, as Popp had left for over a year without sending any news home in the meantime.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Junk appears in the first opening of the 2020 anime a few stories arc before we officially get to meet him.
  • The Blacksmith: Junk's profession, both before and after settling down in Lankarks, where he specializes in selling weapons.
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: Steenue provides the "gentle touch", while Junk is a firm believer in "firm hand".note
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Junk is The Blacksmith in their village, with the physical strength and knowledge about weaponry required for such a job, whereas Popp is a Squishy Wizard whose specialty is on spell-casting instead of fighting with brute physical strength or weaponry.
  • Tough Love: Junk is a firm practitioner when it comes to parenting.
  • We Sell Everything: His weapon shop specializes in weaponry-related wares.

     Loka and Leira

Maam's parents. They accompanied Avan in his quest to defeat Hadlar in the past. After Avan accomplished it, they settled down in a village, where Maam was born and raised.

  • Can't Catch Up: Loka felt inadequate as a swordsman after Leira joined and he noticed she and Avan were much stronger warriors than him. The two noticed and sought to learn support spells they could cast on Loka to help him catch up.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: The color of Leira's hair and eyes turn red when she's wearing her thief costume. Her entire skillset changes as well, and she doesn't even really know why it happens.
  • Disappeared Dad: Loka had already passed away prior to the start of the main story.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: While Leira is by no mean ugly in the present, she was quite stunning back in the day when she traveled with Avan and Loka as the prequel shows.
  • Like Father, Like Son: "Daughter" in this case. Maam, despite never having been a warrior like Loka, has strength reminiscent to his own, as Matoriv remarks. Meanwhile, Maam has capacity for some healing spells, which Leira, who fought alongside Loka as a cleric, could wield.
