Main Characters

    In General
  • Bathtub Bonding: They share a bonding moment when they take a bath together in the Hot Springs Episode.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: In Yuki's past life, Yuki was a girl and her gentleness softened Luka, who was a Troubled, but Cute slave back then. Even though Yuki is a guy in his current life, the dynamic hasn't changed much since Yuki is still a kind soul and brings out the aloof Luka's warmer, protective side that he shows only to Yuki.
  • Interspecies Romance: Yuki is a human and Luka is a Duras. They were lovers in Yuki's past life and the mutual romantic attraction still persists in Yuki's current life.
  • Lady and Knight: In the past, Yuki was the Bright Lady with healing powers and Luka was her Black Knight as he was a Duras slave who betrayed his master and entire race so he could swear loyalty to Yuki. In the present, they still have the dynamic even though Yuki isn't a lady anymore since Luka is still dedicated to protecting Yuki no matter what.
  • Magic Contract Romance: Yuki is Luka's master according to the contract they made in Yuki's past life in order to free Luka from his former master. But instead of acting like master and servant, they share a romantic relationship.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Luka is an unaging Duras while Yuki is a human with a regular lifespan. Luka has already outlived Yuki once and spent hundreds of years waiting for his lover to be reborn.
  • Opposites Attract: Yuki is friendly and gentle, while his past-life lover Luka is cold and unsociable to everyone but Yuki.
  • Reincarnation Romance: Luka was Yuki's lover in the latter's most recent past life. After Yuki died, Luka waited hundreds of years for Yuki to reincarnate and his love is as passionate as ever. While Yuki doesn't remember his past life, he feels immediately attracted to Luka.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Yuki is a sweet, sensitive healer and his partner/past-life lover Luka is an aloof, tough swordsman. Adding to it, Yuki actually was a woman in his past life.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Ever since Yuki's past life, Yuki and Luka have been each other's one and only true love. Yuki being reincarnated as a guy didn't make their feelings change at all. Luka outright stated that when he falls in love, he falls only once.

     Yuki Sakurai/Giou

Voiced by: Soichiro Hoshi, Akiko Tanaka (child)

The protagonist. Yuki is loved by everyone at the Asahi Orphanage where he grew up, yet he can't seem to escape the feelings of loneliness and being unwanted since his parents abandoned him. Because of this, he has a very low sense of self-esteem that holds him back in life. When the situation calls for it, he can actually be very heroic – and this is when the people around him recognize him as the charismatic leader they loved so deeply in their past lives.

Yuki is the bearer of "Light of God", a divine power that first and foremost gives him access to people's emotions and memories if he touches them when they are in emotional pain. At younger age, he thought of himself as weird for having this power, but soon comes to terms with it as the story progresses. He also discovers another aspect of the "Light of God" – the power to heal wounds and soothe people’s hearts with his warm, loving light.

Unlike the Zweilt Guardians, he has no recollection of his past lives, and yet he can’t help but feel oddly nostalgic around Luka, his lover from a past life.

  • Adaptational Wimp: The anime downplays the skills he shows in the manga, such attacking Cadenza with Kuroto's fallen blade during the fight against Cadenza and downplays his martial arts skills as a Chekhov's Skill.
  • All-Loving Hero: His heart of gold and genuine desire to help others make him more understanding towards people who others would turn away from.
  • Amnesiac Lover: He doesn't have any of his Past-Life Memories, so he can't remember being Luka's lover in his previous female incarnation. Luka doesn't want to tell Yuki the true nature of their past relationship because he believes Yuki wanted to forget him.
  • Apologises a Lot: People tend to point out that Yuki apologizes for things that aren't even his fault.
  • Asleep for Days:
    • After the first confrontation with Reiga, Yuki sleeps for two full days due to the shock he received at knowing that his childhood friend Kanata was in fact, Reiga.
    • After he kills Kayako to save her from fully merging with a Duras, Yuki wakes up five days after the battle.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Those who knew Yuki's past female incarnation think his male self is as much of a cutie.
  • Badass Adorable: Unexpectedly from someone as slender and cute-looking as him, Yuki is actually extremely skilled in martial arts.
  • Barrier Warrior: His special technique Halo Wall puts up a barrier of light around others, protecting them from harm.
  • Broken Pedestal: Briefly suffers from this during the Kyoto Arc, when the Zweilt reveal that they have been lying to him about how he ended up at Asahi Orphanage and how his mother died.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: When Takashiro arrives to take him to the Giou Clan, Yuki doesn't want to leave the Asahi Orphanage because he thinks the younger orphans still need him. However, he realizes being around the children will make the Duras target them again and decides to go to Tokyo for their safety.
  • Chaste Hero: Yuki cares deeply about all of his friends and doesn't express conscious interest in romance. He feels drawn to Luka and can tell he's someone special to him, but can't understand Luka's strong feelings towards him because he doesn't remember Luka was his lover in a past life.
  • Combat Medic: While Yuki's powers are primarily about healing, he learned martial arts for self-defense.
  • The Defroster: No matter how cold someone may seem, their barriers will quickly go down around Yuki. This is more notable with Luka, Hotsuma, and Kuroto, who all start as aloof and distant, only to open themselves to Yuki for how lovable and empathetic he is.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Having been abandoned as a baby, Yuki wants to know why he was born and be useful for others.
  • Devoted to You: Yuki has the ability to inspire eternal devotion in Luka and the Zweilt Guardians. They all can't help but to want to give everything for Yuki.
  • Distressed Dude: Most of the time, the other characters are protecting or saving him.
  • Doorstop Baby: He was abandoned at the Asahi Orphanage as a baby, with nothing to identify him but a note with his name.
  • Doppelgänger Gets Same Sentiment: Played With. Yuki is stated to be quite different from his past incarnation, having even changed from a woman to a man, and doesn't even have his Past-Life Memories. However, Luka knows that Yuki has the same soul as his old lover and has sworn to devote himself to Yuki in the same way he did for Yuki's past incarnation. Yuki sometimes feels insecure about Luka comparing him to his past female self, especially since he doesn't remember what exactly was their past relationship, but Luka reassures Yuki should just be himself.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: He has a very feminine face. Make sense since he used to be a woman in all of his previous incarnations.
  • The Empath: When Yuki touches someone who is in emotional pain, he's able to read that person's emotions.
  • Empathic Healer: When Yuki heals the other Zweilts, he takes on their pain. Because of this he often collapses and won't wake for several days. If Yuki takes too much "pain" from the Zweilt, which he has often done in his past lives, he ends up suffering from unbearable fierce pain and dies in madness.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Multiple girls have commented that he is cute, but he also has some male admirers in the form of Luka and Sairi.
  • Friend to All Children: All of the children at Asahi Orphanage were very attached to him. Even a little girl he saves from possession ends up attached to him.
  • Hates Being Alone: His greatest fear is feeling alone and unwanted.
  • The Heart: The Zweilt Guardians and Luka are kept united thanks to their shared devotion and loyalty to Yuki who heals both their physical and emotional wounds with his kindness.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: Despite having been abandoned at an orphanage as a baby, Yuki is an upbeat teenager who doesn't seem to be saddened by much.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Towards the end of the series, he can summon a sword that his past incarnation created.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Even though Yuki can read people's minds by touching them to find out what's bothering them, heal people's injuries by taking on their pain, and wants to help people, he tends to put himself down due to seeing himself as an unwanted child and feeling he's useless without Luka protecting him.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: The Zweilt have often commented on how Yuki is a pure prescense in their lives.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Despite Luka's fervent devotion to him, Yuki has a hard time believing Luka really cares about him, even assuming Luka is only staying with him because of their contract and would leave him if he wasn't his master. To ease Yuki's insecurities, Luka offers to end the contract if that's needed to prove he's with Yuki out of his own free will.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Ever since his past life, Yuki has been the only one who can bring comfort and happiness to Luka. Justified as Luka was a slave his entire life and not allowed any true comforts prior to meeting Yuki's previous incarnation.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Because he lacks his Past-Life Memories, Luka, the Zweilt Guardians and Takashiro keep Yuki in the dark about a lot of crucial information regarding the war against the Duras, his origins and especially his past life, such as his past romantic relationship with Luka and whatever happened between Sairi and his past female incarnation.
  • Loved by All: Luka and the Zweilt Guardians all feel a deep and unconditional love for Yuki. Even morally ambiguous guys like Takashiro and Reiga can't help to develop a soft spot for Yuki.
  • The Medic: Gifted with the "Light of God", Yuki is a powerful healer central to the Giou Clan's battle against the Duras.
  • Morality Chain: Luka betrayed the Duras to protect Yuki and the only reason he supports the Zweilts and their cause is because of Yuki.
  • Morality Pet: Reiga hesitates to take any action that could harm Yuki and even steps in to protect him from Cadenza, proving that his Kanata personality isn't completely gone.
  • Nice Guy: He's selfless, polite, kind and good with children.
  • Oblivious to Love: Since he doesn't remember his past life, he's very slow when it comes to understanding Luka is determined to protect him out of love for him.
  • The Only One I Trust: Luka doesn't trust any of his allies, especially Takashiro and Sairi, except for Yuki.
  • Parental Abandonment: Raised at an Orphanage of Love, Yuki was told that his mother abandoned him there when he was a baby. This is later revealed to be false as it was Takashiro who placed him in the orphanage and ordered everyone to keep this a secret from Yuki.
  • Protectorate: Both Luka and the Zweilt Guardians practically live to protect Yuki. Eventually, even Reiga realizes protecting Yuki is what's most important to him now.
  • Quest for Identity: Yuki wants to find out who he really is, why he was born and what happened in his past life to make him forget Luka and the Zweilt Guardians. Even though he knows the truth is likely painful, he believes that remembering his past life will make him more helpful for his friends.
  • Reincarnated as the Opposite Sex: Yuki used to be a woman in all his previous incarnations, but was born as a male in this life.
  • Shoot the Medic First: He's frequently targeted by the Duras because the Zweilt Guardians depend on his healing powers to stay in top shape during their battles.
  • Sobriquet Sex Switch: In his past life, Yuki was a woman named Yuzuki, nicknamed Yuki. Both "Yuzuki" and "Yuki" are written with the same kanji.
  • Stepford Smiler: Yuki clearly has some issues of self-worth stemming from being abandoned by his parents when he was very young. However, if someone should ask him if he's okay, he usually gives them a cheerful smile and tells them that nothing's wrong. He does tend to get depressed if he's by himself, though.
  • Was It All a Lie?:
    • Suffers this upon Kanata's, who turned out to actually be Reiga, betrayal.
    • Almost falls into this upon learning that the Zweilt were lying to him from the beginning about his origins.
  • White Mage: As the possessor of the "Light of God", Yuki's powers focus on healing and protective barriers.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Reconstructed. While facing that his pure idealistic values might not hold up to reality, he still manages to hold onto his morals and kindness.
  • Wistful Amnesia: Even though he's the only one who hasn'r regained his Past-Life Memories, Yuki subconsciously yearns for Luka and knows Luka was someone very special to him in his past life. Eventually, he starts to recall how to cast spells he knew in his past life, making others think Yuki could completely regain his memory.
  • You Are Not Alone: When he's overcome with the fear of being alone, Luka is at his side to remind him he won't ever let him be alone.

     Luka Crosszeria (“Zess”)

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai

Luka is the Duras (specifically, an Opast) that fell in love with the previous incarnation of Yuki and swore eternal dedication to her. While he is completely loyal to Yuki in this life as well, he won't tell him the nature of their relationship in the past.

As an ally to the Giou clan he is something of trump card to them, as his knowledge of his own kind is information worth its own weight in gold. Not to mention his unbelievable power level that kills lesser demons simply by existing side by side with him, and throws high-level Opast off their feet. Once thing is for sure: The Giou Clan would be a lot weaker without Luka on their side.

Despite not being a Zweilt, he is unofficially considered to be Yuki's partner.

  • The Ace: He's known for his unrivaled power and beauty that made even the Demon Lord himself adore him.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: He likes to comfort Yuki by caressing his hair. Yuki can vaguely recall Luka did that for his past incarnation too.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Yuki is concerned Luka might be bothered by having to fight his own twin brother, but Luka admits he has never really thought much of Luze as he has not seen Luze since they were children.
  • Always Save The Boy: Luka's top priority is always Yuki's safety and well-being. He won't hesitate to fight even his own twin brother if he threatens Yuki's safety.
  • Badass Longcoat: This is a staple of his wardrobe and he is rarely seen without one.
  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: He can block a knife with his bare hand.
  • The Beastmaster: He has a dragon familiar named Sodom.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He first fell in love with Yuki's past life because Yuki was the first person to show him kindness and compassion.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Usually comes in and saves the cast when they need help the most.
  • Black Swords Are Better: His weapon is a black sword.
  • Blessed with Suck: He's one of the most powerful and beautiful Opast, unfortunately, this garnered the attention of the Demon Lord who's implied to have sexually abused him during their contract.
  • Bodyguard Crush: He mainly acts as Yuki's bodyguard and has been deeply in love with Yuki since the latter's past life.
  • Bridal Carry: Often carries Yuki around like this when protecting him or getting him to safety.
  • Catchphrase: Almost every chapter/episode, he makes a declaration to Yuki: "I will not betray you."
  • The Champion: Protecting Yuki is Luka's only reason to fight Duras and join the Zweilt Guardians.
  • Chick Magnet: In the Hot Springs Episode, just putting on a yukata causes him to become surrounded by girls.
  • Color-Coded Wizardry: His spells tend to be purple.
  • The Comically Serious: His comedic moments are mostly about how deadpan he's about everything not concerning Yuki.
  • Compliment Backfire: In an extra chapter, he tells Tooma that his food tastes as good as instant ramen. Luka genuinely meant it as a compliment since he really likes ramen, but Tooma thinks he's making fun of him.
  • The Confidant: Luka is the only person who makes Yuki feel safe and comfortable enough to talk about his problems and fears. Yuki himself is surprised to find himself opening up so easily to Luka right after they first meet.
  • Cool Sword: He wields the magic sword Roxass.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He can be really possessive towards Yuki when other men get close to him, even to the point of not allowing Tachibana to hug Yuki and is even more annoyed of Tsukumo hugging Yuki than Touko. He gets especially mad when Takashiro tries getting touchy-feely with Yuki by using the excuse that they're half-brothers.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was born into a slave family and trained to be a soldier since birth and was implied to be quite young when he was chosen to be the favorite of the Demon Lord who is implied to have sexually abused him during their contract.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He often dresses in dark clothing, but is on the Zweilts' side.
  • Defrosting Ice King: He's usually indifferent and reserved, but Yuki is able to open up his heart, little by little. Thanks to Yuki, seeing Luka with a smile on his face is not as unthinkable as it was before.
  • Determinator: He will stop at nothing to protect Yuki.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When he reaffirms his loyalty to Yuki, he is given a necklace in a private conversation between the two, the scene itself is framed like a marriage proposal.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: He's an immortal Duras with pitch black hair and pale skin.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: He pulls one on Hotsuma when he loses it over Shuusei's disappearance.
  • Headbutt Thermometer: Luka once checks Yuki's temperature by putting his forehead against Yuki's. When Ria makes a fuss about it, Luka does the headbutt again for her to shut her up.
  • Hot as Hell: Being a high-class Duras makes him supernaturally beautiful.
  • Informed Attractiveness: All the guys in this series are super pretty, but Luka's beauty is commented on several times. It's said he's so gorgeous that he drew even the Demon King to him.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Most of the time when he is alone with Yuki, they are interrupted by Tachibana.
  • Love Redeems: A long time ago, Yuki's past life fell in love with Luka, who she had long fought to destroy. In spite of their differences, Luka chose to betray the Duras side and joined Yuki in the war against them.
  • Mark of Shame: Like all members of the Crosszeria clan, he’s been branded with the "Brand Zess", forever marking him as a traitor. Unlike other Brand Zess’, however, his mark is bright red in colour and specifically called “The Bloody Cross”, which means his blood has been mingled with the Demon Lord’s, thus making him his property.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's one of the most beautiful and sexiest men in the series, which is saying something.
  • Not So Stoic: He's normally cool and collected, but loses his composure whenever Yuki is in danger.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He doesn't exactly wear a friendly expression on his face.
  • Race-Name Basis: Before revealing his true name to Yuki, Luka introduces himself as "Zess", but that's actually the name of his Duras race or clan.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: He has jet-black hair, pure white skin and otherworldly beauty.
  • Skyward Scream: When Yuki is kidnapped by Reiga in the anime.
  • Slave Race: The Zess demon clan's ancestor sold the names of his fellow demons to humanity, which allowed humans to enslave the Duras. Ever since then, Luka and his family have been forced into slavery as punishment.
  • Smells Sexy: Yuki and Touko think he smells good.
  • Stalker with a Crush: The Murasame siblings point out that Luka behaves like a stalker because he's almost always following Yuki or watching him from afar to protect him. It's even mentioned he has been doing it since Yuki was a baby.
  • The Stoic: His facial expression very rarely changes, except when he flashes a smile around Yuki.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Normally, he is very aloof, cold and prefers to keep himself distanced from others. When it comes to Yuki, however, he couldn't be more passionately devoted if he tried.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's six feet tall, black-haired and very beautiful.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Although the details are unknown, Sairi did something in his past life that made Yuki so sad and Luka so angry that he won't ever forgive Sairi.
  • Unbroken Vigil: After the battle with the Duras-possessed-Kayako, Luka stays besides Yuki's bed until the latter wakes up five days later.
  • Undying Loyalty: He has sworn to stay by Yuki's side and never betray him.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: When they first meet, Yuki can't help but admire Luka's beautiful silver eyes.
  • When He Smiles: Yuki blushes when Luka smiles at him soon after they first meet.

     Yuzuki Giou

Voiced by: Yukana

Yuki's previous life and Luka's past lover. Like Yuki, she was God's Light. She is shrouded in mystery and has always been reborn as female until her most current life as Yuki, which everyone sees as a sign that the Wars are ending.

  • Broken Bird: She's described as a very lonely and melancholic girl because being God's Light forced her to be isolated her entire life. Falling in love with Luka was apparently the only thing that made her happy.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her talk with being unable to stay happy with Luka sounds like a woman who has been forbidden from marrying her lover or one who cannot give her lover children. Might be played straight as Zweilt are encouraged to marry other Zweilt and The Clan is not to keen on anyone with Duras blood because of Reiga.
  • Empathic Healer: When healing the other Zweilts, she would take their pain as her own and abosorb any miasma that was poisoning them.
  • Gilded Cage: In all of her previous lives, Yuzuki was locked away in a secret room of the Twilight Mansion. Not even the Zweilt Guardians were allowed to see her, unless she was needed to defend or heal them.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She was the one to push Yuki into going with the Giou by taunting him and sending horrific nightmares and visions, which end up causing Yuki's powers to flare up to the point Heroic RRoD. While it's stated that Yuki would have no choice but to go with Takashiro and the Zweilt eventually, she was a driving force into causing Yuki's powers to start going out of control faster in order to force his decision.
  • Heroic RRoD: It's stated that in all of her lives, she took too much "pain" from the Zweilt, which made her suffer from unbearable fierce pain and die after being driven mad.
  • Honorary Princess: Although the Giou Clan isn't actual royalty, they called Yuzuki their princess because she was the bearer of God's Light and their most valuable treasure.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Something involving Sairi made Yuzuki feel so guilty that she thought she didn't deserve to be happy with Luka ever again. Luka thinks this is why Yuki was reborn as a male with none of Yuzuki's memories and is afraid that Yuki will push him away if he ever remembers the guilt from the past.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: She was treated as the Giou Clan's princess, but she had to confined in the Twilight Mansion for her protection and had very limited interaction with others, including the Zweilt Guardians. Luka was the only one who got close to her and eased her loneliness.
  • The Lost Lenore:
    • To Luka. Even so long after her death, he still loves her and those feelings get projected onto her reincarnation Yuki.
    • It's heavily implied Sairi had romantic feelings for Yuzuki and he blamed himself for her guilt over an unknown incident, leading him to stay away from Yuki for the latter's sake.
  • Mercy Kill Arrangement: At the start of the series, a flashback shows Yuzuki begged Luka to kill her when she was on the cusp of insanity. However, Luka said he would only do it in the worst case scenario.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Luka and the Zweilt Guardians all refer to her as "Yuki", which is the name of her male reincarnation. It's not until Yuki visits the Giou Clan's main house in Kyoto that he learns her real name was Yuzuki.
  • Posthumous Character: She's long dead by the time that the series takes place, but Luka and the Zweilt Guardians frequently think and talk about her as her reincarnation Yuki is a big reminder of her.
  • Princess Classic: The Giou Clan regarded Yuzuki as their princess and from what little shown of her in flashbacks, she was beautiful, kindhearted and yearning for love.
  • Rebellious Princess: The leaders of the Giou clan basically imprisoned Yuki in the Twilight Mansion since her birth, but she was notorious for sneaking out to visit the surrounding villages.
  • Spirit Advisor: She appears in Yuki's dreams and visions during times of high stress to give him an occasional Power-Up. She also appears to Luka one time using a shard of her power that she left in the mark on his shoulder.
  • Stellar Name: Her name includes the character for 'Moon' in it.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Something happened between her and Sairi's past life that was apparently bad enough that not only did Yuzuki wish to forget all her memories, but even Luka finds the act unforgivable.
  • White Magician Girl: Like her male reincarnation Yuki, she had healing powers and provided indispensable help for the Zweilt Guardians, both in combat and emotional support.

Zweilt Guardians

Reincarnated over and over thanks to powerful magic, the Zweilt Guardians are the members of the Giou Clan whose sole purpose in life is to protect their beloved "Light of God" and slay all the Duras that cross their way. These young warriors are born with supernatural powers and can, by the power of their Zweilt rings, materialize their respective weapons just by thinking.

Generally speaking, the Zweilt Guardians work in pairs because (aside from making them more effective by numbers in combat) the bond between the Guardians strengthens their minds to the point where they can fight as one being. Most Zweilt Guardians have been paired consistently through their many lifetimes and know each other by heart.

For a Zweilt Guardian, the strongest love of all is the love they share with their fellow Zweilt partner.

     The Zweilt as a Whole
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zweilt_guardians.png
Left to right: Hotsuma, Shuusei, Tsukumo, Touko, Kuroto, Senshirou, Ria, Sairi

  • Arranged Marriage: The Zweilt as expected to marry other Zweilt in order to produce children with supernatural gifts.
  • Born-Again Immortality: Whenever a guardian is about to die, Takashiro casts a spell that prevents their soul from reaching the afterlife and allows him to summon back their soul for it to reincarnate when he needs them to fight the Duras again. However, the reincarnation spell doesn't work if the guardian is killed by a Duras.
  • Cast from Lifespan: The manga explains that once a Zweilt awakens their true powers, their gifts drain whatever lifespan is lift. No Zweilt has lived past their 30s according to the manga.
  • Past-Life Memories: Downplayed as the Zweilt do not remember everything, just basic memories about the war and about their abilities.
  • Recruit Teenagers with Attitude: The Zweilt start training from a very young age and most of them are teenagers since they tend to reincarnate at around the same time.
  • Reincarnation: The Zweilt are reincarnated every couple of hundred years to fight the Duras.
  • Secret-Keeper: The Zweilt are in the know about many things such as that they keep from Yuki, such as the true reason why Yuki was put in the orphanage, his relationship with Luka from his previous life, how his powers are not so much healing as it is Energy Donation, and that Yuki is destined to absorb so much pain that it drives him to insanity and will lead to him committing suicide. All of this is kept a secret by order of Takashiro.
  • Two Girls to a Team: All the Zweilt Guardians are male, except for Touko and Ria.
  • Undying Loyalty: All the Guardians feel an innate desire to protect Yuki with their lives.

     Touko Murasame
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_07-034_2560.png

Voiced by: Marina Inoue

One of the first Zweilts to appear. Touko is easily likeable, to the point of her being the person that is closest to Luka (after Yuki, of course).

Her Zweilt partner is her younger brother, Tsukumo.

  • Action Girl: She's an offense specialist who fights Duras with her large sword.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Touko is a Genki Girl with shades of Cool Big Sis, but she's always quick to react when exposed to injustice and can be more than a handful when she's really angry.
  • BFS: When battling the Duras, she wields a large sword called "Eon" (Eternity).
  • Brother–Sister Team: Tsukumo is her Zweilt partner and younger brother.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has light orange hair and is one of the feistiest of the Zweilt Guardians.
  • Genki Girl: Touko is a cheerful and energetic girl, very rarely staying still and quiet.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She occasionally ties up her hair into pigtails, fitting her energetic and jovial personality.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Inverted. Touko's weapon is a large sword while her brother Tsukumo is a gunman.
  • Incest Subtext: For some unknown reason, she and Tsukumo are always reincarnated as siblings. She laments in the manga that the Gods do not want her and Tsukumo to be happy when talking to Senshiro about the subject. She also has sleepovers with Tsukumo, cuddling and sharing the same bed as him, much to the disgust of some others.
  • Nice Girl: Touko is one of the friendliest Zweilt Guardians, always being there to make others smile again when they feel down, whether it is by kind words or a loving hug.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the cheery and talkative Red Oni to Tsukumo's calm and quiet Blue Oni.
  • Relative Error: In an extra chapter, Touko stops going to watch Tsukumo's tennis practice because his jealous fangirls think she's his girlfriend. Tsukumo tries to explain Touko is just his sister, but the oddly strong affection between the siblings only makes the fangirls more convinced they don't have a normal sibling relationship.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: She's a Genki Girl while her brother Tsukumo is The Stoic.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Since Ria doesn't appear in the anime, Touko is the only female Zweilt Guardian in the adaptation.
  • Telepathy: Touko is the bearer of the "Ears of God", giving her the ability to hear other people's thoughts. However, her gift is not as powerful as Tsukumo's (who has the same power).
  • Tsundere: Sweet type. Touko is usually a nice and peppy girl, but she's also tough and snarky when she needs to be, especially around Hotsuma as she's not on good terms with him.

     Tsukumo Murasame
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_07-045_3861.png

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama

Another Zweilt that appears early on, Tsukumo is calm and relaxed without being lazy or indifferent. He is also sweet and friendly without being officious or a doormat.

His Zweilt partner is his older sister, Touko.

  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He might not be as openly expressive as his sister, but he cares deeply for his friends and is not unaffected when something bad happens to them. One should keep it as a general rule that basically, if Tsukumo is upset, then shit has really hit the fan.
  • Big Sister Attraction: Tsukumo loves his sister Touko a lot, to the point his fangirls at school are jealous of their relationship and think they're dating. Even Hotsuma calls Tsukumo out on having a sister complex. In an extra chapter, Tsukumo laments he has never been able to marry Touko because they're always reincarnated as siblings.
  • Brother–Sister Team: Touko is his Zweilt partner and older sister.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's not above some mild teasing and snarky comments in order to amuse himself.
  • Disney Death: Almost got killed by Reiga at one point, but luckily, Yuki managed to heal him.
  • Emotionless Boy: Tsukumo rarely expresses strong emotion.
  • The Gunslinger: He wields a gun called "Knell" (Funeral Bell), which he can use to drive Duras out of human bodies they have taken possession of, but he cannot actually kill them with this weapon.
  • Instant Fan Club: He's very good-looking, friendly and an excellent tennis player, so it's natural he has a lot of fangirls at school. However, he's not happy with this because said fangirls hate his sister for her unusually affectionate relationship with him.
  • Mystical White Hair: He has white hair and has stronger telepathic powers than Touko.
  • Nice Guy: He's a very generous soul and doesn't hesitate to share loads and loads of whatever snack/candy he's always seen munching on.
  • The Quiet One: He normally lets Touko do most of the talking and rarely says more than what's needed.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the calm and quiet Blue Oni to Touko's cheery and talkative Red Oni.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He's The Stoic while his sister Touko is a Genki Girl.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: He can communicate with animals (most notably birds).
  • The Stoic: He's generally stone-faced and the least emotional of the Zweilt Guardians.
  • Super-Hearing: He can hear conversations and noises from miles away.
  • Sweet Tooth: He's always seen snacking on something.
  • Psychometry: He can "hear" the memories of objects he touches.
  • Telepathy: Like Touko, Tsukumo is the bearer of the "Ears of God", which allows him to hear people's thoughts and speak to them through telepathy.

     Hotsuma Renjou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_06-109_2197.png

Voiced by: Daisuke Ono, Makoto Tsumura (child, Drama CD), Ayumi Fujimura (child, anime)

Short-tempered and impulsive, Hotsuma doesn’t give off the friendliest of impressions. The truth is, he's quite a "people person" – he just doesn't realize it himself. This isn't made easier by the fact that he tends to clash with other people that have a lot of character, such as Touko and Kuroto. One thing is for sure though; once Hotsuma is on someone's side, they can count on him to be there for them when there's trouble ahead.

His Zweilt partner is his childhood friend, Shuusei.

  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: Since "Voice of God" is a very fickle power, he has shaky control of it and sometimes fears others will get hurt because of it.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: A minor example. When the Giou Clan Elders reveal that Takashiro abandoned Yuki at Asahi Oraphanage and not his mother, Hotsuma was the first to beg for Yuki's forgiveness and apologize for lying to him. He also reveals the Awful Truth about the circumstances of Yuki's birth.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Hotsuma shows a Tsundere side around both girls and boys (Yuki especially). He was also married to a female Shuusei in a past life and still has a very strong attachment to Shuusei even as a man.
  • Anger Born of Worry: The only times he gets angry with Shuusei is when the latter isn't looking after his health and Hotsuma scolds him to remind him he has to eat.
  • Beta Couple: His relationship with Shuusei can be interpreted as romantic, which makes them a parallel to the relationship between Yuki and Luka at the center of the story. The fact that Shuusei was Hotsuma's wife in a past life only reinforces the parallels.
  • Chaste Hero: He isn't interested in getting a girlfriend and is quite oblivious to the blatant Homoerotic Subtext in his relationship with Shuusei.
  • Childhood Friends: Shuusei has been his Only Friend since childhood.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He can be somewhat possessive towards Shuusei. It's even mentioned that Hotsumawould lock Shuusei in his bedroom when they were kids, not wanting anyone to get close to his partner.
  • Cursed with Awesome: He considers the "Voice of God" to be curse because it causes him to set people on fire when he speaks angry words at them. However, Yuki doesn't believe this is the case since Hotsuma's flames don't hurt those he cares about and him yelling at Shuusei to live is what saves his partner's life when Ashley puts him in an eternal slumber.
  • Elemental Personalities: Fittingly for someone specializing in fire attacks, Hotsuma is hot-tempered, passionate and reckless.
  • Face of a Thug: At first sight, he appears to be just an arrogant, angry thug, but he's a good guy once others get to know him. Lampshaded by Touko.
  • Flaming Sword: He wields a blade called "Master Stroke" (Divine Skill), which holds fire powers.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Normally, just the slightest provocation makes him yell and get aggressive. He can only stay calm when he's around Shuusei.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's a very passionate, impulsive and loud guy.
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: When Hotsuma sees Shuusei "dead" due to losing the will to live, he refuses to accept Shuusei would ever abandon him and yells at him to live. Thanks to the power of "Voice of God", Shuusei is revived.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Luka, of all people, has to soundly slap him across the face when he's hellbent on running off to look for Shuusei after his disappearance.
  • Hopeless with Tech: He doesn't have a cellphone and doesn't even know how to use a digital camera.
  • Interrupted Suicide: He tried to kill himself by turning the "Voice of God" on himself and setting himself on fire when he was younger, but thankfully, Shuusei was there to stop him and begged him to live with him or let him die with him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his rough exterior and foul mouth, he is actually good-hearted, sincere and will go to any lengths to help those who are dear to him.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: With Shuusei. They're such close longtime friends that they argue as if they were married. Luca calls them out on it in one chapter. The fact that Hotsuma had married Shuusei during a life where he had been born female only adds fuel to the fire.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Shuusei. Feeling empty, depressed and worthless, Shuusei only finds the will to live because he knows Hotsuma needs him to live too. As soon as he thinks Hotsuma won't need him anymore if he has Yuki with him, Shuusei briefly wants to die and only recovers thanks to Hotsuma making clear he'll always need his partner.
  • Mr. Fanservice: An omake has Hotsuma going to complain to the author for drawing him shirtless so often.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: According to the anime, Hotsuma's hair is naturally brown, but he dyes it blond to deliberately look like a delinquent and keep people away from him.
  • Oddly Shaped Sword: Master Stroke's blade is shaped to resemble a flame.
  • Opposites Attract: With Shuusei. Hotsuma is hot-headed and impulsive, while Shuusei is cool-headed and sensible.
  • Perpetual Frowner: His default expression is an angry frown. He only looks relaxed when he's around Shuusei.
  • Playing with Fire: Hotsuma is the bearer of the "Voice of God", a power which usually manifests as fire that is activated by his voice.
  • Power Incontinence: His fire powers are activated by his voice, but he loses control of it in emotionally charged moments, which resulted in an unfortunate accident where he set his brother's bully on fire. Thanks to Yuki, he gains more confidence in his ability to control his power.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the short-tempered Red Oni to Shuusei's cool Blue Oni.
  • Say My Name: When using "Voice of God" to revive Shuusei, he yells "You have to live!! SHUUSEI!!!"
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: He grew up with people around him being afraid of his power to set people on fire and even his own family thought of him as a monster. Not wanting to be rejected for hurting people by accident again, Hotsuma became angry and hostile to others so no one but Shuusei would get close to him. He starts growing out of it after Yuki befriends him.
  • Trophy Child: As the parents of a Zweilt Guardian receive money from the Giou Clan in order to properly raise their child, Hotsuma's parents only see him as a cash cow. Nowadays, they only come to visit the Twilight Mansion to demand more money from the Giou Clan.
  • Tsundere: Harsh type. He's rough and foul-mouthed to just about everyone, but shows a softer side of himself to Shuusei and later, Yuki.
  • Unbroken Vigil: After Shuusei is seriously injured in the Kyoto arc and ends up in a coma, Hotsuma doesn't leave Shuusei's side until he wakes up.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Shuusei's flashbacks reveal Hotsuma was a very sweet and innocent kid, in contrast to his angry and thuggish current self. However, Shuusei knows Hotsuma still has kindness beneath his rough exterior.
  • Words Can Break My Bones: His words can summon flames and save Shuusei's life by commanding him to live.
  • Worth Living For: His suicide attempt showed him that no matter what happens, even if the whole world should hate him, Shuusei will be there for him. That's all he needs to keep living.

Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano, Ao Takahashi (child)

Thinking before acting, Shuusei is quiet and sensitive. While he is more delicate than most, this also makes him unexpectedly stubborn and courageous. With his high intelligence and tendency to think before he acts, he is a resourceful ally whose determination is surpassed by few.

His Zweilt partner is his childhood friend, Hotsuma.

  • Anger Born of Worry: One of the few things that can make him angry is Hotsuma getting hurt by fighting.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: One extra comic revealed that Shuusei once reincarnated as female and married Hotsuma, who refered to past!Shuusei as a 'hottie among hotties'.
  • Back from the Dead: Thanks to Hotsuma using his "Voice of God", his command “LIVE!” woke Shuusei up from the Eternal Sleep that Ashley put him in.
  • Badass in Distress: In the Sleeping Beauty arc, Shuusei is kidnapped by Ashley, prompting Yuki, Luka and Hotsuma to go rescue him.
  • Barrier Warrior: He's able to put up magical barriers.
  • Berserk Button: Being reminded of the life he spent as a woman and married to Hotsuma or any suggestion of him crossdressing will actually make him hit, yell, and totally act out of character.
  • Beta Couple: With Hotsuma. When interpreted as romantic, their relationship serves as a parallel to Yuki and Luka in several ways. Shuusei was even a woman and married to Hotsuma in a past life, reinforcing the parallels.
  • Blemished Beauty: His chest is heavily scarred because of the burn marks Hotsuma unintentionally gave him and not even Yuki can heal the scars, but Shuusei is still regarded as a handsome man and his fangirls at school are proof of it.
  • Book Smart: His excellent grades make him a model student at school.
  • Childhood Friends: He has been friends with Hotsuma from a young age and he's only person Hotsuma opens up to.
  • Covered with Scars: A good part of his upper body is covered with nasty burn marks he got when he interrupted Hotsuma's suicide.
  • Crystal Ball: He can summon one which he uses to detect criminals as he assists the police. Also counts as Functional Magic.
  • Dual Wielding: He wields two short swords called "Kurai Kurou" (Crime and Punishment).
  • Empty Shell: Subverted – he only thinks of himself as this, to the point of wondering if something went wrong with him during this war, as if he lost the ability to have any kind of emotion, ambition or motivation towards anyone or anything, except Hotsuma.
  • Energy Ball: He can shoot energy balls.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: It's mentioned Shuusei's admirers at school aren't just girls.
  • First Friend: Because of his dangerous powers, Hotsuma couldn't get close to other people for most of his life. However, he didn't feel lonely because Shuusei was with him through it all.
  • Forgets to Eat: He rarely eats breakfast, claiming he has other things in his mind when he wakes up, mainly Hotsuma.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite being a great guy and the best friend Hotsuma can ask for, Shuusei is truly convinced that his company is only hurting Hotsuma due to the latter feeling guilty of trying to kill himself and burning Shuusei who stopped him. After Shuusei briefly becomes suicidal due to thinking Hotsuma is better off with Yuki, Hotsuma has to reassure Shuusei he does need him as his partner.
  • Instant Fan Club: He has his own fan club at school and people stalk him for photographs.
  • Intimate Marks: According to Hotsuma in an omake, Shuusei has two big moles on the inside of his thigh.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: His mother called him an "it".
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: A (probably) platonic version with Hotsuma. Shuusei wants Hotsuma to open up to others, mainly Yuki, and become happy as he was when they were kids. But Shuusei thinks that Hotsuma won't be needing him once Yuki befriends Hotsuma. Hotsuma has to make loudly clear that he won't ever be happy if he loses Shuusei.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: With Hotsuma. Shuusei likes to annoy Hotsuma with his teasing, but they're inseparable. Luca calls them out on it in one chapter.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Hotsuma. Shuusei is the one keeping him stable for the most part and by stopping Hotsuma's suicide attempt, Shuusei gave Hotsuma someone to live for.
  • Magic Knight: While he does specialize in support and defense, he can be a very skilled and dangerous sword fighter in close combat if the situation calls for it.
  • Morality Pet: Early on, Shuusei mainly serves to show Hotsuma's softer and humanizing side.
  • Opposites Attract: With Hotsuma. Shuusei is cool-headed and sensible, while Hotsuma is hot-headed and impulsive.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents pretty much lost interest in him, presumably because they were weirded out by his powers.
  • Pretty Boy: Gets called one in-story several times.
  • Princely Young Man: He's one of the most handsome and intelligent students in school, making him so popular that some girls call him a prince.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the cool Blue Oni to Hotsuma's short-tempered Red Oni.
  • Reincarnated as the Opposite Sex: In at least one lifetime, Shuusei was a woman who was married to Hotsuma.
  • Scars Are Ugly: He has burn scars all over his chest from the time he embraced Hotsuma when the latter attempted to set himself on fire. He often tries to hide them because he knows seeing them makes Hotsuma feel guilty about the incident, but after they have a heart-to-heart conversation about Shuusei's self-worth issues, Hotsuma promises Shuusei he doesn't need to hide his scars anymore.
  • Sensor Character: Shuusei is the bearer of the "Eyes of God", a power that gives him a sixth sense and allows him to sense enemies.
  • The Smart Guy: Out of the Guardians, Shuusei is the best one at investigation and deduction even without relying on his detection powers.
  • Stepford Smiler: Behind his small teasing comments and weak smiles, he hides severe self-esteem issues that cause him to pass many days barely eating or sleeping at all. His genuine smiles are when he's with Hotsuma.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He's quite cool and composed, rarely showing his emotions. He still has a soft spot for Hotsuma and greatly cares about him.
  • Undying Loyalty: Like other Guardians, he's loyal to Yuki, but his primordial loyalty is to Hotsuma. He would prefer to burn to death with him than to let him die.

     Senshirou Furuouri
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_15-117_8609.png

Voiced by: Satoshi Hino, Fuyuka Ōura (child)

A zweilt-in-training and a klutz by nature. Because of things that happened in the past, Senshirou only just recently became a Zweilt. This is not an easy task, as a new Zweilt only comes by every few hundreds of years or so, and is then put to several kinds of harsh tests before it is decided if the person has what it takes. However, the hard-working Senshirou endured his training for many years and is now ready to stand eye to eye with the demons he is expected to kill.

His Zweilt partner is Kuroto.

  • Arranged Marriage: With Tsubaki, but she breaks it off when he becomes Kuroto's Zweilt partner. She even comments on how she always knew it would end this way, considering how Senshirou and Kuroto act when they are together.
  • Art Initiates Life: Anything he draws with his magic brush moves as he wishes.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's gentle, sweet and loves taking care of people. When he faces evil, however, he reveals how deadly and threatening he can be.
  • Childhood Friends: With Kuroto. Senshirou's grandfather raised them together since they were young children. Since his grandfather died, Senshirou thinks of Kuroto as his only living family.
  • The Gadfly: Senshirou seems to love making flirty statements to make Kuroto annoyed and flustered.
  • The Glasses Come Off: He takes off his glasses when he gets serious in battle.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Humble and docile as he is, he's surprisingly strong both physically and spiritually – life-saving personality traits if one is going to hunt Duras. He won' show mercy to those who are purely evil.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: No matter what a good person he is, he views himself as a terrible selfish and prideful person for choosing to become a Zweilt to take revenge.
  • Househusband: He's very good at cooking and other domestic tasks. He originally was going to be Tsubaki's husband and take care of the house chores for her, but since he broke off their engagement and became Kuroto's Zweilt partner, Tsubaki thinks he became Kuroto's domestic husband instead.
  • Improbable Weapon User: He uses a large calligraphy brush to draw spells in the air.
  • Nice Guy: He's klutzy, but lovable and friendly by nature.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Since his parents died when he was very young, Senshirou was raised by his grandfather until Cadenza killed the latter.
  • Sinister Scythe: He wields a gigantic scythe appropriately named "Death Scythe".
  • Team Mom: Yuki points out Senshirou gives off a motherly vibe because he's domestic and acts like a mix of a mother and a wife to Kuroto. Senshirou admits he can't resist the urge to pamper lonely people like Kuroto and Yuki.
  • The Team Normal: Unlike the other Zweilt, Senshirou doesn't have a natural superpower and can only fight by using exorcism weapon and items.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Kuroto. While Senshirou wants to take revenge on Cadenza too, he mainly became a Zweilt because he can never let Kuroto be alone ever again and will stay with him even if Kuroto himself protests against it.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: A mild case with Kuroto. Senshirou likes to tease him much like an older brother who often messes with his younger brother.
  • Words Can Break My Bones: He can use his magic brush to paint kanji in the air and exorcise spirits that get hit with the kanji.
  • You Killed My Father: The Opast Cadenza killed his grandfather. Senshirou became a Zweilt so he and Kuroto could take revenge together.

     Kuroto Hourai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_23-038_4726.png

Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya, Kaoru Mizuhara (child)

Kuroto is serious and quiet, but not above letting go of things he love in order to achieve a greater goal – which is why he had to give up his life-long passion for shogi.

His Zweilt partner is Senshirou.

  • Berserk Button: He hates being complimented, and it is the easiest way to embarrass him and make him lose his indifferent posture.
  • Childhood Friends: With Senshirou. They met as young children when Senshirou's grandfather adopted Kuroto and were raised together.
  • Defrosting Ice King: He considers himself a loner, but Senshirou has been melting his heart slowly but steadily since they were children.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: He's actually mistaken for Senshirou's girlfriend in the manga.
  • Flash Step: His power is the "Feet of God" which allows him to cross distances in an instant.
  • Happily Adopted: After his parents put him up to adoption, Senshirou's grandfather took him in and raised him along his grandson Seishirou. Kuroto came to love Senshirou and his grandfather as family over time.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His hair often covers his right eye and he presents himself as an antisocial loner who only opens up to Senshirou.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Yuki says he's pretty.
Yuki (upon their first meeting): You're totally pretty in real life too!
  • Katanas Are Just Better: When in battle, Kuroto wields a black katana named "Izanagi" (Hell).
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Senshirou. After Cadenza killed his grandfather, Senshirou considers Kuroto the only family he has left and became his Zweilt partner so they can take revenge together.
  • Lost Food Grievance: When someone makes him drop his ice cream, Kuroto pulls out his sword and tries to kill the one responsible.
  • Not So Stoic: For someone so serious, he is easily flustered when praised.
  • Parrying Bullets: He can cut bullets midair with his katana.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Kuroto is picking a fight with Hotsuma in every scene they're together.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: His given name literally means "Black Sword" and his weapon is a black katana.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He seems like a "cool loner" type, but he's weak to Nice Guys like Senshirou and Yuki who easily bring out his warmer side.
  • Survivor Guilt: His past-life partner Oboro was killed by the Opast Cadenza, which means he can't ever reincarnate. Kuroto has a lot of guilt and self-loathing because of this, which drove him to distance himself from everyone but Senshirou.
  • Sweet Tooth: He spends a lot of his free time snacking on Japanese sweets. It's one of the things Senshirou finds cute about him.
  • Teen Genius: Despite his young age, he is ranked the 6th best Shogi player in Japan.
  • Tsundere: Harsh type. He acts annoyed whenever Senshirou and Yuki express fondness for him, but it's obvious he has a soft spot for them.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: A mild case with Senshirou. Kuroto gets annoyed at his teasing, but they're like family to each other.
  • You Killed My Father: Like Senshirou, Kuroto wants to kill Cadenza and avenge Garan who was a grandfather to him too.

     Sairi Shinmei
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sairi_vol9.png

Voiced by: Koji Yusa (Drama CD)

Sairi Shinmei is an "original" Zweilt currently partnered with Ria, who lost her partner during the last set of battles with Reiga. He works as an actor and was formerly overseas with Ria on a mission to find and recover a grimoire. He is a manga-exclusive character, as the anime ended after season one. He is also the only Zweilt that Yuki seemed to have a strong recollection of despite his memory seal.

  • Cross Attack: He has a set of two weapons with a handle shaped like a cross in the center of a curved single-edged blade.
  • Cryptic Conversation: Talks quite a lot like this, either giving hints or warning Yuki. From his very first appearance, he mentions that Yuki wouldn't care so much for the Giou Clan if he still had his memories.
  • Dual Wielding: He dual-wields a pair of scythe-like blades in battle.
  • Hidden Depths: When Ria and Touko are talking in story 41, Ria tells Touko that she didn't like Sairi until she came to know his secret that completely changed her view of him.
  • Hopeless Suitor: In both past and present lives, Sairi attempts multiple times to seduce Yuki even though Luka is Yuki's one and only love. He's even gone to the point of trying to use his God's Eyes on Yuki, though it never worked.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: Like Shuusei, he has the Eye of God, but his is also known as the Malicious Eyes and is capable of influencing others.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Sairi claims that he's not into boys. However, he does admit that he loves Yuki, even though he's a guy now.
  • It's All My Fault: He believes that whatever he did in his previous life resulted in Yuki being reborn as a male and forgetting the past.
  • I Work Alone: Sairi was the only Zweilt to not have a partner. However, in the current lifetime, he agreed to pair up with Ria Otonashi, who had lost her Zweilt Partner who is implied to have been his brother in the war.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his standoffish attitude, he's a good guy at heart and is trying to stay away from Yuki out of fear of hurting him like he did in their past lives.
  • Love Confessor: When Masamune questions why Sairi seemingly lacks the Zweilt Guardians' adoration for Yuki, Sairi makes clear he does love Yuki more than anything, but that's why he keeps distance from him.
Sairi: I do adore him. I love him and want to protect him. If he's in pain, I want to make whatever's hurting him go away. It's probably never occurred to you... but there exists a kind of love...that is dangerously close to hate.
  • My Greatest Failure: He feels a lot of guilt as he believes he caused Yuki to suffer in their previous lives and doesn't believe he can ever forgive Luka or himself for it.
  • Mysterious Past: Sairi is one of the most mysterious characters in the series and seems to have a secret involving Yuki that no one else but Ria knows. When he first saw Yuki again he remarked that it was painful seeing him again. Luka seems to not trust him around Yuki and asks if he had done anything to him.
  • Noodle Incident: Throughout the second half of the manga, Sairi repeatedly references some sort of incident in his past life that involved Yuki. Whatever happened, it made Yuki feel so much guilt that Sairi believes that to be the reason why Yuki can't remember his past life and Luka says what Sairi did was unforgivable, but the incident is never explained.
  • The Resenter: Yuki thinks Sairi hates him because he's so cold to him. However, Luka claims that Sairi actually hates him, not Yuki. It's more than implied it has something to do with Yuki's past incarnation choosing Luka as her lover.
  • Reverse Grip: He wields two scythe-like weapons with reverse grip.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: He's considered to be incredibly handsome, even amongst the Zweilt, who are all good-looking themselves. It's also said that every time he got a job, he would always be fired within the month due to getting into fights with guys who claimed that he stole their girlfriends.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He keeps Yuki at arm's length and is very cold to him. This leads Yuki and Masamune to think Sairi hates him, but the truth is Sairi loves Yuki as much as Luka does, but has his complicated reasons to not express it openly.
  • Villainous Lineage: He is from the Shinmei Clan, who were once on par with the main Giou Clan Branch until one of their members had a relationship with a Duras, which resulted in Reiga.

    Ria Otonashi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ria_vol9.png

Ria Otonashi is an "original" Zweilt currently working with Sairi as his partner, who she lost during the last set of battles with Reiga. She works as an idol and was formerly overseas with Sairi on a mission to find and recover a grimoire. She is a manga-exclusive character, as the anime ended after season one.

  • Combat Hand Fan: Subverted. She's seen holding a handfan in battle, but is never shown actually fighting with it.
  • Fear of Thunder: She's scared of thunderstorms.
  • Genki Girl: She is noted to very hyper with both Kuroto and Tachibana commenting on how it's "exhausting being around her."
  • Girlish Pigtails: She's a perky young idol who ties some of her hair into pigtails.
  • Hopeless Suitor: She has obvious feelings for Sairi, but he still hasn't gotten over his own unrequited feelings for Yuki from their past lives.
  • Idol Singer: She was part of an idol group before retiring to fight the Duras.
  • Important Haircut: She cuts her hair at the end of the manga when she promises to find Sairi.
  • I Will Find You: In the final chapter, Ria swears to find Sairi who has gone missing.
  • The Peeping Tom: She peeps at the male's side of the hot spring just because she wanted to see Tachibana without his hat on and was disappointed to see he was still wearing one.
  • Punny Name: Her surname 'Otonashi' can be translated as 'without sound', which is ironic since she was an idol singer.
  • Satellite Character: She's the most underdeveloped of the guardians and doesn't have many scenes that don't tie into Sairi or Touko.
  • Secret-Keeper: She found out Sairi's secret, which is currently up for speculation. It's hinted that it has to do with Yuki's past life and how Sairi attempted to court her.
  • Survivor Guilt: It's hinted that her partner in the last battle was Sairi's brother.

The Giou Clan

A clan "touched by God" which manifests in the possession of special abilities that can be used to fight the Duras that threaten the balance of the human world (see the Zweilt Guardians). Many of its members are involved in the political and financial world, which gives them the opportunity to get the resources they need, and also have “certain organizations” clean up for them when things get ugly.

Along with being The Clan, there are nine Branch Clans: Shinmei, Murasame, Renjou, Usui, Hourai, Furuori, Otona, Shikibe, and Reisen. Together with the Giou, they are called the Ten Holy Houses. The Zweilt Guardians are always born into one of the branches of the clan and all members are encouraged if not mandated to take a spouse from another one of the branches.

     Takashiro Giou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_05-180_2354.png

Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu

The current head of the Giou Clan. A suave and charming, but at the same time no-nonsense man who regards sacrifices as a necessity, even if it breaks his heart to be so cruel. Possessing a grimoire, the Book of Solomon, he is a powerful magician who can cast the most powerful spells and call forth the wildest of monsters when the situation calls for it – even if he only does it as a last resort when nothing else can be done.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He is more cunning and cruel in the manga than he is in the anime, willing to sacrifice Shuusei to an Opast if it means protecting Yuki and lying to Yuki about everything concerning the war and even Yuki's origins and past life.
  • Big Good: He's the head of the Giou Clan and the leader of the Zweilt Guardians as he commands them in their war against the Duras.
  • Color-Coded Wizardry: His magic is often red, in contrast with Reiga's blue.
  • Complete Immortality: Unlike the Zweilt Guardians, Takashiro doesn't reincarnate since he has sealed a Duras inside his own body to stop his body from aging and give himself a Healing Factor that heals any wounds left in his body.
  • Face–Heel Turn: After regaining his memories that were surpressed by the Elders, Takashiro turns against the Giou Clan and joins forces with Suzaku to summon Lucifer and destroy the world.
  • Fake Memories: Turns out the Giou Clan's elders placed false memories in Takashiro to make him forget he was used as a guinea pig to create a half-Duras with Lucifer's genes. His true memories are unlocked by Suzaku Shinmei.
  • Human-Demon Hybrid: He has a Duras and a node of Lucifer's flesh sealed inside of him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's a very handsome man with long hair going past his shoulders.
  • Long-Lost Relative: He first introduces himself as Yuki's older half-brother and tells him he's spent years looking for Yuki. Subverted as he isn't actually Yuki's half-brother – he just lied about it in order to manipulate Yuki into joining the Giou Clan.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He must tell many lies, make sacrifices when it's necessary and coldheartedly manipulates those around him in order to keep the Giou Clan from losing the war against the Duras. He was also the one to put Yuki in the orphanage and commanded the Zweilt to not tell Yuki about his origins.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite his Manipulative Bastard tendencies, he repeatedly shows he does care about Yuki and regrets lying to him to turn him into a pawn.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's over 1,000 years old, but he still looks like a man in his twenties because the Duras in his body keeps him from aging.
  • Relatively Flimsy Excuse: He lies about being Yuki's half-brother to make it easier for him to leave the Asahi Orphanage and come with him to the Giou Clan. While Yuki is disappointed when he learns they aren't related, he does understand why Takashiro told that lie and forgives him.
  • Scars Are Forever: He has a scar on his left cheek, made by Reiga on the day the latter betrayed the Giou clan.
  • Unreliable Expositor: He never tells the full truth to Yuki and what he does tell him is at least partly lies, either because of his manipulative schemes or because his memories are manipulated by the elders.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Back when the war started, Takashiro cast a forbidden spell that sealed a Duras inside himself. Therefore, he is not reincarnated like the Zweilts; instead, the Duras keeps on regenerating his mind and body, meaning he will never age, die from physical wounds or forget anything, ever.

  • Ambiguously Human: He once tells Yuki he's an Opast who made a contract with Takashiro, but immediately brushes it off as a joke. It's unknown whether he was actually lying or there was some truth to his story.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's very goofy and is always doing something silly to lighten up the mood, but the Zweilt Guardians are surprised to see he's strong enough to easily beat up some thugs.
  • Keet: He has an upbeat personality and likes to keep the conversation going.
  • Large Ham: It's rare for him to not get hammy and extravagant.
  • Moment Killer: Frequently interrupts any moment that Luka and Yuki have alone.
  • Mysterious Past: Nobody knows where he came from or how he ended up in the Giou clan.
  • Never Bareheaded: He's never seen without a hat on, not even when he's sleeping or taking a bath. Other characters eventually start to get curious of what he could be hiding beneath his hat, especially after he claims that taking off his hat would reveal he isn't actually human.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: If he can go a full scene without cracking a joke, then shit got real.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: More often than not, he is the one who helps break tension in the room with his antics.
  • Troll: His favorite hobby seems to be saying and doing random stuff to annoy people, especially Luka.

Isuzu is the Giou's family doctor. As he is very fascinated by the subject matter, he is always looking for an opportunity to examine Luka's body.

  • Beautiful All Along: His introduction isn't very flattering, but once he shaves and cleans himself up, he's as handsome as any other man in the series.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Arguably. When he suggests an examination, his words and actions about treatment always come off as perverted, but it's unclear whether he is aware of it or not.
  • Hospital Hottie: When he does bother to look presentable, he's a fairly handsome doctor.
  • The Insomniac: Isuzu is known for passing out for various days from lack of sleep, which is caused by his sleepless and restless nights of researching Duras.

Duras

The Duras are residents of the Infernus (Hell) and the enemies that the Giou Clan has sworn to destroy. The word Duras itself actually means “The Proud Ones”. Duras who come to the human world often possess humans who hold darkness in their hearts, effectively growing stronger by feeding on their negative emotions. Since the power levels between the Duras vary, they are categorized like this:

Niedatrechy, low-level demons who mostly take the forms of beasts or reptiles. Unlike the higher-class Duras, these little guys can appear spontaneously in the human world without answering to a necromancer’s call.

Midvillain, humanoid creatures with much higher level of intelligence and sentience than the Niedatrechy. A person who is possessed by a Midvillain can be discerned by the mark that appears on the victim’s body during said possession.

Opast, the highest ranking Duras. They all look like unearthly beautiful people. An Opast can easily kill even the most experienced magician, and even the legendary Zweilts are advised not to fight an Opast unless it’s absolutely necessary. The highest ranking Opasts, called general class, are second only to the Demon Lord in terms of raw power and cruelty.

    Duras as a Whole
  • Fangs Are Evil: All Duras have long fangs to show their demonic nature. Luka actually mentions that vampire legends are based on Duras due to some of them drinking blood.
  • Femme Fatalons: Some Duras have sharp and long nails.
  • Hellish Pupils: All Duras have slit pupils.

Kanata grew up alongside Yuki at the Asahi Orphanage, where they shared a close bond like that of brothers. Being older, Kanata moved out before the story’s beginning and became independent, but he often visited Yuki and asked him to live with him in the future. When he wasn’t spending time with his dear Yuki, Kanata would often do research about a mysterious old book he had had in his possession since he was little: the Book of Raziel.

It would later turn out that Kanata is actually the human incarnation of the Giou Clan’s sworn enemy, Reiga Giou, who once was part of their noble clan but turned his back to them and joined the Duras. Reiga is a necromancer of unbelievable strength and knowledge, which is the reason why he doesn’t recover his memories before his body have physically matured - otherwise the immense stress on his soul and body would kill him. While acting cold and merciless, the fond memories of his life as Kanata together with Yuki still lingers, confusing and frustrating him, creating a complicated internal conflict about whether or not he should kill the Giou Clan’s last hope – the "Light of God."

  • Big Bad Friend: He was a close friend and older brother figure to Yuki while growing up. Yuki is torn apart by the revelation that he's the Giou Clan's biggest enemy and is set on killing Yuki for his own goals.
  • Big Brother Instinct: As Kanata, he loves Yuki as a younger brother and his protective instincts towards Yuki still linger in him as Reiga even though he tries to deny it. At the end, he switches sides because he can't fight his wish to protect Yuki.
  • Color-Coded Wizardry: His magic is light blue.
  • Death of Personality: After he regains his Past-Life Memories, Takashiro tries to convince Yuki that the "Kanata Wakamiya" personality is dead and now Reiga is all that's left in the man who was his brother figure. Subverted as Kanata's brotherly love for Yuki stays with him even after becoming Reiga and eventually switches sides to protect Yuki.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Towards the end of the manga, Reiga/Kanata decides to not fight the Zweilt Guardians anymore because he cares too much for Yuki. However, Suzaku and Takashiro still seek to summon Lucifer and destroy the world, so Reiga/Kanata joins the side of the Zweilt Guardians to protect Yuki.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": After he regains his Past-Life Memories and reveals his true identity as Reiga, he keeps telling Yuki to not call him "Kanata".
  • Elemental Personalities: His heart is just as cold as the ice he creates in his attacks.
  • Evil All Along: Played with. While constantly denying that he cares for Yuki and his identity as Kanata, Reiga/Kanata has several moments where he can't bring himself to kill Yuki, though he has tried (unsuccessfully) on a couple of occasions.
  • Heel–Face Turn: At end of the manga, Reiga/Kanata realizes that Yuki is more important to him than the war he has fought for a thousand years and allies himself with the Zweilt Guardians to fight against Takashiro and Suzaku.
  • Human-Demon Hybrid: Reiga was originally a half human and half Duras. His original body died, forcing him to reincarnate in a fully human body, but having a half Duras soul makes his human body deteriorate and die young.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Even as Kanata, Reiga's views humanity as trash. Yuki is the only one who can get him to see some good in people.
  • An Ice Person: He can conjure ice attacks.
  • Love Redeems: Ultimately, his brotherly love for Yuki proves to be too strong and leads him to ally himself with the Zweilt Guardians to put an end to the war and protect Yuki.
  • Nice Guy: As Kanata, he's a very kind and caring guy. Even though he tries to pretend otherwise, his kindness is still present after he awakens as Reiga.
  • Summon Magic: He specializes in summoning Duras.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's a tall and handsome young man with black hair.

     Ashley
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_11-163_470.png

Voiced by: Kana Ueda

Ashley is an Opast who was responsible for the "Sleeping Beauty" syndrome and the abduction of male students. She likes good-looking teenage guys and has a legion of low-class Duras that look like dolls at her command.

     Elegy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_23-082_6855.png

Voiced by: Junko Minagawa

A general class Opast who fell in love with Luka, or as they know him, “Zess”. They have yearned for him for centuries now, and their patience is almost worn out: Zess will belong to them at all costs.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Elegy's female form may look attractive, but their personality is depraved to the core and makes Luka disgusted with being the target of their obsessive affections.
  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: Elegy swaps between both male and female forms. According to Luka, the concept of gender is vague to Opasts.
  • Animal Motifs: They disguise themself as a butterfly when utilizing illusions.
  • Finger Licking Evil: A variation as they lick their lips in anticipation of fighting Luka.
  • Gender Bender: They have a female form and a male form based on their own tastes.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: They're clearly resentful over the fact that Luka loves Yuzuki/Yuki and will do anything to steal Luka from Yuki or kill Luka if he keeps refusing.
  • If I Can't Have You…: They're perfectly willing to kill Luka as he keeps refusing to stop loving Yuki.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: They're enamored with Luka's strength and mercilessness in battle, calling him the ideal living weapon.
  • Master of Illusion: They can create incredibly realistic illusions, even making Luka see Yuzuki as if she was still alive by using his memories of his dead lover.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Their outfit has a plunging neckline that goes past their cleavage.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Elegy is quite aroused by Luka making them bleed and getting spattered with their blood.
  • Villainous Crush: They're madly in love with Luka and wants to make him abandon Yuki to rejoin the Duras' side. However, Luka is single-mindedly devoted to Yuki and Elegy doesn't take that well.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Elegy is an evil Yandere Opast with silver hair.
  • Yandere: Elegy believes that Luka should only love them for an eternity. Anything or anyone that comes in their way will face the consequences and it will not be pretty.

     Cadenza
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_19-418_5757.png

Voiced by: Takaya Kuroda

One of the most dangerous Opasts seen so far, Cadenza has earned every right to carry the nickname “Master Killer” proudly, as he almost always kills the poor necromancer who was foolish enough to summon him. He is easily recognized by his long, crimson hair that seems to gain an aggressive glow when he does his evil deeds. That blood red colour and his hollowed laughter will haunt your nightmares forever if you manage to survive an encounter with this devil.

  • Badass Longcoat: He's always seen wearing a longcoat and being an Opast makes him very powerful.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: While not monstrously large, they are still quite brushy and distinct.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: He doesn't bother to remember how many humans he has killed because it's all a game to him, even comparing it to fishing.
  • Cruel Mercy: In Kuroto's past life, Cadenza killed his partner Oboro, but intentionally left Kuroto alive because he thought it would be interesting to let Kuroto come after him for revenge.
  • Evil Redhead: He's an evil and bloodthirsty villain with red hair.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Does it ever. But that’s only to be expected, considering who his seiyuu is…
  • Hannibal Lecture: He attempts this on Kuroto and Senshirou to break their spirits during a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His hair covers his left eye, representing his devious nature.
  • More Despicable Minion: Reiga has sympathetic traits due to his attachment to Yuki, but Cadenza only wants to torment and kill humans for fun. At one point, Reiga has to step in when Cadenza picks a fight with Kuroto and Senshirou, since he endangers Yuki getting caught in the crossfire.

     Luze
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uraboku_23-436_8222.png

Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana

An Opast that had a small role in the anime but in the manga is still waiting for his moment to come, eagerly longing for Reiga's call to summon him to Earth.

  • Evil Twin: He's Luka's actual twin brother, but unlike his brother who betrayed the Duras and joined the Zweilt's side, Luze stays loyal to Reiga.
  • Heel–Face Turn: At the end of the manga, he's the only Duras who follows Reiga after the latter decides to become Yuki's ally.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: He's Luka's identical twin brother, except his hair is longer and his eyes are amethyst as opposed to Luka's silver eyes.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's a beautiful man with long black hair worn in a ponytail.
  • Separated at Birth: According to Luka, he and Luze never thought of each other as family because they were separated at a young age.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Being Luka's twin brother, he shares his tallness, black hair and beauty.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Like his twin brother Luka, Luze's name starts with "Lu".
  • Undying Loyalty: Unlike the other Duras, Luze is genuinely loyal to Reiga.

  • Caring Gardener: He finds peace in gardening, which convinces Yuki he's a good person despite everything. Him not taking care of his dear flowers is the first sign that the Duras is corrupting him.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: He has had a harsh life, starting with his own mother trying to kill him.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: He hates Yuki because he thought the latter cried out of pity after accidentally seeing his traumatic memories. In the end, however, he learns to be thankful for Yuki's sympathy.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He wears glasses and is the first villain in the series.
  • No Full Name Given: His full name is never mentioned.

Voiced by: Erino Hazuki

  • Demoted to Extra: The anime removed nearly all of her scenes in the Sleeping Beauty Syndrome arc and only left her relevant role of accidentally getting Shuusei kidnapped by Ashley when trying to use a Love Spell on Hotsuma.
  • Extreme Doormat: She doesn't have the courage to voice out her own opinions and just goes along with what her "friends" and parents tell her to do.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Hotsuma refuses to date her both because of his self-esteem issues and disinterest for romance in general.
  • Last-Name Basis: Her so-called friends only call her by her last name and she's painfully aware of what that implies.

  • Go Out with a Smile: After Yuki stabs her to put her out of her misery, she smiles at him and thanks him.
  • Knight Templar Parent: When she found out her younger son was murdered, she accepted Reiga's grimoire, summoned a Duras and ordered it to kill the bullies who killed her son. After the Duras is defeated by the Zweilt Guardians, she erges with another Duras to kill the last bully herself.
  • Mercy Kill: Yuki kills her with his sword after she fully merges with the Duras she summoned. Touko believes Yuki did the right thing because that was the only way to save Kayako's soul from being consumed by the Duras.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Her younger son died when he fell off a window from the school building. Finding out he was pushed by bullies made her go mad.
