openEdit war
Back in 2018, I added this to the YMMV page for Memoirs of a Geisha here:
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Sayuri about three-quarters through the book. Though she starts off very sympathetic in her Trauma Conga Line and Break the Cutie moments, it becomes very clear that she's willing to do pretty much anything just to get with the Chairman. This includes screwing over her closest companions and showing no remorse for doing so. Values Dissonance also ensues once it's revealed that the Chairman was married the whole time.
The Lucky Cat added this subbullet to it:
- However, given the time period and constraints on women are the time, Sayuri is often forced into doing things she doesn't want to do, either by Mother or Mameha, it's somewhat understandable that she'd do anything she could to try and achieve some lasting happiness, as the only alternative is to be forced into a loveless relationship or spend the rest of her life as a maid. Her choices are to either suffer her entire life or screw over a couple of people to get what she wants, and it's shown she feels terrible about the way things broke down between her and Nobu, but she simply wanted to be with the man she loved and unfortunately couldn't pursue him freely until a lot of hardship is thrown her way.
Lucky Cat also added lines to the Unintentionally Sympathetic entry for Nobu. Originally the entry said that Nobu came off as justifiably angry because Sayuri led him on and betrayed him, while Lucky Cat's addition (which begins with "However") is that Nobu comes off as Entitled to Have You and tried to make Sayuri indebted to him.
Queen of Swords deleted the subbullet for Unintentionally Unsympathetic for being Natter and being a justifying edit.
Last December, Lucky Cat edited the Unintentionally Unsympathetic entry to this:
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Sayuri about three-quarters through the book. Though she starts off very sympathetic in her Trauma Conga Line and Break the Cutie moments, it becomes very clear that she's willing to do pretty much anything just to get with the Chairman, though like she herself points out, it's either that or be little more than an indentured servant to Mother for the rest of her life and much of her career was orchestrated by Mameha and The Chairman. Values Dissonance also ensues once it's revealed that the Chairman was married the whole time.
This seems like an edit war to me, and the new edit still seems justifying. Can I get some feedback from other Tropers?
Edited by iamconstantineopenShould YMMV/MichaelRichards be cut?
It's a creator page, so it shouldn't have a YMMV page anyway, but even so there is only one entry on it.
Edited by BeanWigginopenEdit War on Characters/StarWarsObiWanKenobi.
On Characters.Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi, Tempest Fury deleted the Broken Pedestal entry with no edit reason. I restored it because there was no reason given for deletion. Fury deleted it again.
Edit: They also deleted The Chessmaster entry with no reason, which I also restored because there was no deletion reason. They just deleted it again. They also made a factually incorrect claim in the second deletion's reason; Fury said Obi-Wan didn't want Luke to kill Vader, but 1:38-1:47 of this video proves otherwise because Obi-Wan said that the Emperor already won after Luke said he couldn't kill his own father. And this isn't the first time Fury edit warred over whitewashing the Jedi.
Edited by Kevjro7openHulu page and Trivia/YMMV
The Hulu page could do with a check. In the "Tropes pertaining to Hulu" section, all but one of them are Trivia tropes, and there's a YMMV page for Hulu, despite Hulu being listed as a "Creator". Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think "Creator" pages are allowed YMMV subpages. Even if they are, the YMMV page still has a Network Decay entry (Network Decay is not YMMV).
openWhat's the minimum number of crossovers before something is considered a common crossover?
I found this example on the Common Crossover page:
- American Horror Story's most popular crossover? It's with Glee, of all shows. This is likely due to the fact that both shows were made by the same guy, Ryan Murphy. Quinn/Tate is a particularly common pairing for such crossovers.
First, this is out of date. At the moment, the most popular crossover with American Horror Story on Fanfiction Dot Net is Supernatural. Second, when I followed the link, I found that Glee and American Horror Story only share thirteen crossovers. Is thirteen crossovers enough to be considered a Common Crossover?
Edited by SharkToastopenCan I edit the RainbowLens Harry Potter entry to remove a bit about stereotypes?
It was a mistake not to ask. My bad. If you guys say no, i'll be totally fine with that and you can revert thw edit.
While it is well known that Remus Lupin is an allegory for an individual with HIV facing discrimination, and that Fenrir Greyback is a predator, there is no statement from Rowling that he is based on stereotypes about HIV+ men.
Hence the change to Truth in Television and the addition of the comparison to real individuals who prey on others and attempt to infect them with HIV.
Before edit = no actual basis for the claim
After edit = Truth in Television(well, literature)
The state of the text prior to my edit was implying that real people like Fenrir Greyback don't exist. That is sadly not true. A TV Tropes page is definitely not the place to raise awareness of how awful pozzing is, but it is also not appropriate it to deny it exists.
FWIW, I'd be totally fine with how it is now. As long as it represents some kind of middle ground instead of implying that shitty people like Greyback don't have real life counterparts.
I should have gone for a middle ground approach from the start. My apologies. Bye.
Edited by BeanWigginopenReal Life folder filled with general natter and trivia -- delete?
The Real Life folder for the trope Polar Bears and Penguins looks to be loaded with general natter and trivia, best I can tell. Should this be deleted, with a note added saying No Real Life Examples, Please!?
Would appreciate some feedback on this. Thanks!
Edited by BoltDMCopenPren Live Action TV
Even though the top of YMMV.The Mandalorian warns that all entries related to the controversial Gina Carano's firing will get deleted ASAP, the Troper named in the subject line added one. After I cut it, I told Pren not to add another one, but they did anyway. Should we ban Pren now, or after the third offense?
openCan I cut these child paragraphs from LoK's entry on FictionalCounterpart?
I understand that Fictional Counterpart isn't solely for products, but almost every example is a product or company.
The Legend of Korra example starts fine, with a paragraph demonstrating how Hiroshi Sato is an Expy of Henry Ford.
But then there's 3 child paragraphs that are essentially just "this is a history analogue." Such as:
"Since the series is set in the Avatar universe's equivalent of The Roaring '20s, the Equalists represent the fears of communism that existed at the time in the US and Europe- a fearsome movement spreading among the underclass who planned to subvert and destroy the established order and enforce total equality."
It ends up just cluttering the examples with 3 paragraphs that are much better suited to another trope, like Does This Remind You of Anything?.
At the end of the day, only Hiroshi Sato/his company is an explicite expy of a historical figure/company. The rest are just vague historical analogues.
Might as well add every single shopping center that has appeared in fiction as a Wal-Mart parody.
openKeep samples in folders of their Name Space?
A troper moved the entry from Dragon Ball Z Abridged in Actually Quite Catchy from the "Web Video" folder to a newly created "Fan Works" folder.
It was my understanding that we should keep samples as much as possible within the folder of their media's name-space, and that "Fan Works" is too much of a generic catch-all (because fan works can be all kinds of media). Is there a policy for this?
Also, they removed the year-designation of two disambiguated titles (still linking to the right media). What's the policy for this? Personally, I would say that the title with year is clearer because you immediately know which version is being referred.
Edited by AlexThePrettyGoodopenDeleting the entries
Mister Anthony Fauci is being tropefied. Now, I can only respect the man, but other than his one entry on Silver Fox (where is talking about a fictional appearance by Brad Pitt), someone tropefied a real life person which is forbidden in the wiki.
I'm going to delete the tropes, if you don't mind. Any objections?
Edited by TomodachiopenPossible new TLP idea similar to existing TLP
So I just recently started to read the "Truth to power through humor" TLP (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/discussion.php?id=e96tlyoczxs7xqap8pmn9osb) and as it seems to be strictly about humour, I was thinking of another trope for situations where instead of humour, the truth to power is told through art/works/historical stories depicting situations suspiciously similar to the actual, criticized situation - as an added bonus, this gives a flimsy protection against the censors as the creators can claim to only speak about the art, work or history. As far as I understand this should be a new trope, though I would need to look up examples (I only have two examples off the top of my head, I'm afraid), but if there are enough examples, the basic premise of humour versus existing art/history is different enough for a new trope launch pad entry, am I correct?
Edited by akanesarumaraopenMusic recommendations in trope page
This was added to the Final Boss page:
To make this reading experience feel as climactic as possible, listen to either this, this, this, or this.
This isn't allowed, is it? Not only can Youtube pull the plug on these videos at any moment, but this looks like a shoehorned Awesome Music example. Also, I can see this becoming a Wall of Text as more and more links get added into the mix. Delete?
openSo Bad It's Horrible-Films N-Z Film
A couple of things involving this page, both involving the user Pikachu 4 Prezident:
1)The entry for Segurança Nacional was edited by another user, but the above user reverted the changes for no given reason. (However, the other user didn't give a reason either.) I'm just worried about a potential edit war.
2)The user also posted an entry on a movie review. I'm not sure, but I think that section is only for the movies themselves, not their reviews. (If the entry has merit, it should probably be moved to Web Video.)
Edited by BKelly95openProblematic Troper
Alright, so I know I brought up RNGSOMEONE on another ATT thread, but here, this is an actual report. Over several weeks, they displayed several bad editing habits such as Walkthrough Mode, Word Cruft, Natter and complaining (many of which I and several other tropers had to revert many times before), and their most recent edit on YMMV.Genshin Impact is a clear case of Natter. I've sent them numerous notifiers, but it looks like they're not learning from them.
Full page history here.
openPotentially over-creepy fanservice entry Live Action TV
Was skimming Series.Bones the other day, and came across this entry:
- Fanservice Bones' Wonder Woman costume in "Mummy in the Maze". Ms. Deschanel's assets are... unusually prominent. Noticeably prominent. Gloriously prominent. Quite a bit of Gainaxing too.
This struck me as being overly pervy, especially in it's focus on the actress rather than the character. (Note: The character is not really playing to fanservice. While the costume does show more skin that typical for her, she's approaching it as a childhood-wish-fulfillment cosplay)
Now, the gainaxing comment needs to go. These are live action scenes, with no digital enhancement to... body physics, just the natural result of wearing a costume in more strenuous circumstances than it was designed for.
Before I re-write this entire example: Am I being too sensitive by the standards of the wiki?
Edited by underCoverSailsmanopenTroper Report
A troper by the name of Peterpol 94 (edit history) has quite a few edits that raise an eyebrow. While some are fine, they have a tendency to create ZCEs by re-adding commented out examples (such as this Harry Potter edit), several instances of tweaking (in one case 17 times over an hour and 20 minutes), and in general making odd edits, like tweaking the wording on Finland's army (and deleting a "contrary to popular belief" in order to then make the opposite point), as well as this edit on YMMV.The Punisher commenting in a badly worded example and deleting a mention of the January 6th U.S. Capital riot. Their edit reasons tend to consist of just the word "work", with no other form of explanation.
I've sent an edit reason notifier just to start off

I'm working on a cleanup of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure trope pages, starting with the pages for the series as a whole. While going through them, I've noticed several tropes that only apply to one of the parts. Since each of the parts has their own page, should those tropes be moved to their respective work pages?
