I'm all for sailor-themed v-necks, haha. Unsure about the OP-suggested name because cleavage isn't the shirt, cleavage is the anatomical splitty-bit between boobs. So it reads like "boobs that reveal the stomach" to me. Leaning toward Navel V-Neck as a result. Or maybe something like Stomach-Baring Neckline.

Anyways, I understand though that there is a focus on this being a primarily female trope, a la fanservice, so I wouldn't want to unintentionally deprecate it.

Oh yeah if you want to make a point of it being female by using the word cleavage, I'd certainly be for it, it's just that a chest cleft is not responsible for showing a stomach. It's like calling ripped jeans "Knee-Baring Hips," at least to me.

I prefer "stomach-baring" over "V-neck" regardless of whether we keep the word "cleavage" or replace it with something else (though I don't think replacing anything other than "Absolute" is necessary).

Maybe Navel Baring Cleavage could work instead of Stomach Baring Cleavage (or one could be a redirect to the other, which I'll probably do anyway if the final name has either "stomach-baring" or "navel-baring" in it).

Navel and stomach are both fine, imo. That's not the part I'm screaming into the void about. I don't care what words are used, just that the phrasing doesn't track definition-wise.

Breaking down what "stomach/navel-baring cleavage" means by replacing each one with its definition.

Stomach/navel (as used here): The belly region.

Bare: To expose a body part.

Cleavage: The hollow between a woman's breasts when supported.

Thus, "the hollow between a woman's breasts exposes the belly region." I don't know about you, but my cleavage does *not* play any part in whether or not you can see my stomach. I could wear something that shows my chest and my navel, but that's again not my boobs' doing. It's the hypothetical outfit's doing.

(This will be the last time I pedantically rant about this, I promise. To reiterate and summarize, I don't have any problem with any of the words. I heavily disagree with the wording.)

It's not the word cleavage that I take issue with!!!

It's that the way you're wording it, it means that the cleavage is the actor in the sentence. Replace it with any other word and you'll see what I mean.

Stomach-baring chimpanzee.

Navel-baring toddler.

This means that the noun is doing the action of baring. A boob cleft is not doing anything. If anything, it's having an action done to it (cleavage being exposed or bared).

Baring Cleavage And Navel would be totally fine by me. I have zero issue with the word cleavage. It's just that it's not doing the baring!!

Where would non-absolute cleavages (open neck and chest but no stomach) go?

I kinda not strongly care, but I thought the narrower version is still a trope considering the wick count.

We can keep all the words, honestly, it just needs rewording imho. Because as the suggestion stands, the boob cleft itself is the thing doing the stomach-exposing (rather than clothing). The words can simply be shuffled around.

I don't think it that much if the wording is semantically correct or not. I think most people would under that Stomach Baring Cleavage is cleavage that exposes the stomach.

But Neckline To Navel isn't bad.

Eh? I mentioned getting rid of both words in the current title, though I mainly meant "absolute" since it's absolutely (heh) meaningless when it comes to describing the trope. "Bare"/"Baring", "Stomach", and "Navel" aren't part of the current title, so I wasn't talking about omitting any of them. Keeping all the words in the case of my previous post would mean not renaming the trope, which nobody here seems to be in favor of.

I admit that Neckline To Navel (which would involve dropping both words in the current title) is not only an improvement over the current name in terms of clarity, but also in terms of memorability.

Navel-Deep Neckline is better, I think - Neckline To Navel makes me think of one of those comically over-the-top threats to e.g. cut someone open from their guggle to their zatch. That, or it suggests the neckline is moving somehow.
