~Grodatmorv: You can usually find ratings on IMDb. Here's the Monk page.

  • USA: TV-PG
  • Canada: G (Quebec), PG (Manitoba and Ontario), 14A (Nova Scotia)
  • Australia: PG, occasionally M
  • New Zealand: M
  • UK: PG, sometimes 12, sometimes 15

Quebec is the only place that assigns a rating lower than PG, and in the case of Quebec, we would also have to take translation choices into account, and the examples on Radar.Monk only seem to refer to the English dialogue (plus RCQ is the most permissive of Canada's ratinga agencies).

In any case, everything on Radar.Monk is permitted under PG ratings, so the page should be cut.

~Phi Sat: As Guma says, it depends. Absent Word of Saint Paul or written documentation, if something airs and is quickly censored in subsequent reruns, it's probably GCPTR. If it's changed years later, that is almost certainly due to a change in standards.

In the case of the Winx Club example, I'm not super familiar with the situation but it sounds like nothing was missed. If the original version aired on Nickelodeon and was soon redrawn by/for Nickelodeon, then it would be valid. From the way you phrase it, however, it sounds like the scene was written one way in Italy; Cinelune and 4Kids didn't see anything wrong with it, but Nickelodeon thought it looked iffy and decided to censor it before they ever showed it. In this case, it's not GCPTR, it's just a case of Nickelodeon, Cinelune, and 4Kids all having different internal standards.

Anyone want to look over The Super Hero Squad Show? A lot of it just seems like traditional kids' show humor and there's nothing super inappropriate AFAICT.

How is 2 Stupid Dogs?

    Examples
  • In "Door Jam" (as pictured here), the dogs attempt to get into the supermarket by piling shoes on the rubber mat outside. When the dogs are trying to find more shoes, they make a stop at a strip club (!!!). Although the stripper is in silhouette, she very explicitly removes her bra.
The shoe! The shoe! Take off your shoe!
  • In "Show and Tell", Kenny brings the dogs to school for show and tell. During his presentation, Kenny mentions that the dogs are male, and to prove it he picks up Little Dog by the hind legs and pretty much flashes the whole classroom. The moment was made worse by the fact that while most of the students looked horrified, the female student that Kenny likes was delighted by the sight.
Little Dog: How embarrassing, they saw me!
  • The episode "Family Values" had a scene where the expies of Greg and Marcia got into an argument and their mother told them to kiss and make up. They started making out.
  • In "At the Drive-In", they go to a drive-in movie where every single car is shaking and bouncing suggestively.
Little Dog: Jeez.. This [movie] is caca! Why do people come here?! (cue camera showing cars described above)
  • The episode "Corn Flakes" begins with Little Dog saying "And he's got nerve calling me "weenie dog"! So I bit him. What would you do? I mean, he stuck it in my face!"
  • In the episode "Las Pelotas", Little Dog ricochets a tennis ball from off of Big Dog's lower abdomen. Little Dog says "Balls" prompting Big Dog to reply, in a strangled voice, "Yeah, I know".
    • Pretty much that whole episode consists of ball jokes. It doesn't help that the name of the tennis court is the "Winky Tennis Club".
  • In the episode "Love in the Park", Little Dog slips and some ice cream cones fall onto his chest a la Madonna's early 90s torpedo-style bra.
  • "Love":
    • At the beginning of the episode, the two dogs observe a pair of rodents making out. Little Dog covers Big Dog's eyes while telling him that you're not supposed to stare at that sort of thing.
    • Hollywood asks Little Dog if he likes feathers and Little Dog says incredulously "In what way?"
  • In the episode "Post Office", the two dogs are shown a collection of rare stamps by Cubby. One of the stamps, in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, is "Young Elvis" - a sperm cell with Presley's hairdo.
  • John Kricfalusi contributed to the episodes featuring Red (listed under "tidbits of poor taste" on the credits), so these tend to have more off-color humor than usual.
    • "Red": At the house of the Three Bears, the dogs drink from the toilets. When the bears return, they look and their toilets, and mama and papa say "Someone's been drinking from my toilet", but the baby bear instead says "Someone was raised in a barn!" and flushes.
    • "Red Strikes Back": The witch from Hansel and Gretel wears a skin-tight black dress and uses a whip instead of a wand to cast her spells, implying she's some kind of dominatrix.
    • "Return of Red": When the wolf, after having eaten Granny, is asked if he would like to try some dog food, he says "Let me make some room" before gagging himself and vomiting Granny back out. It's not every day you see a blatant display of bulimia in a children's cartoon.
  • During the montage in the episode "Jerk" where the two dogs think of how to get across the canyon, Little Dog is at one point watching a scantily clad woman dancing suggestively, who has her ass facing the camera.

In the United States, it was aired prior to the development of the TV Parental Guidelines, so the only rating system involved would have been the producer's or broadcaster's internal standards.

The American TV-G, Canadian G, and British U ratings do allow for a little Demographically Inappropriate Humour as long as it's discreet, so in order to say for sure that any of these got anything past the radar, we'd need to check each individual episode.

In any case:

  • "Door Jam": The stripper is completely covered in shadow; you can't see anything. It's DIH.
  • "Show and Tell": The dogs are, in fact, dogs. It doesn't show the Little Dog's penis, so at worst this is NPAF.
  • "Family Values": I believe people at the time would have recognised that the family is a referenc to The Brady Bunch, in which I believe they're stepsiblings, so nothing wrong here.
  • "At the Drive In": Too vague. When I saw that episode as a child, I assumed everyone else was just kissing energetically, and the writers and censors likely also figured this is how kids would view it. It might fit under DIH.
  • "Corn Flakes": Sounds like an Accidental Innuendo.
  • "Las Pelotas": DIH
  • "Love in the Park": Nothing about it actually breaks any rules. It's just a reference to Madonna's most infamous outfit.
  • "Love": The rodents are just kissing, and the feather thing is at worst a Noodle Incident.
  • "Post Office": You can't show sex, but I don't think there are any rules against sperm.
  • "Red": Toilet Humour
  • "Red Strikes Back": Tight dresses and whips are allowed. This might be Parent Service
  • "Return of Red": Oh bloody Hell, that isn't bulimia. Bulimia is a specific eating disorder, and the wold is just removing Granny from his stomach to make room for dog food. It's a simply vomiting joke, nothing more.
  • "Jerk": Again, this is going to fall under Parent Service if anything.

During the cleanup for Gainaxing, I removed a few examples from Radar pages, so time to go through those.

The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody:

Australia: G

Canada: Unknown

UK: U, PG (volume 1)

US: TV-G, TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-PG, TV-Y-FV (no idea what the last one means)

Ratings for Suite Life on Deck:

Australia: G

Canada: G (self-applied)

United Kingdom: U

US: TV-G, TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-PG

    open/close all folders

    Suite Life

  • According to Zack, the only thing better than babes in bikinis are babes in bouncy castles. Minor suggestive humour is allowed under TV-PG.

  • "Fairest of Them All":
    Cody: It's like Christmas!
Zack: I'm sweating in places I've never sweated before.

Body humour.

  • "Who's the Boss?":
Wayne: You can always find the pot of gold at the end of the Wayne-bow!
Carey: I'm not Irish, and you're not getting lucky.

Without external context, it might be demographically inappropriate humour, but I don't have any information on who these people are.

  • "Foiled Again":
Chef Paolo: Olive oil, virgin olive oil, extra virgin olive oil, olive oil with a questionable past...\\ Likely Demographically inappropriate humour.
-
Diego: He sticks me, I stick him back; we have fun!\\ No context; seems invalid.
  • Diego's excuse for cheating on his girlfriend with both London and Maddie:
Diego: Diego is like a fine sports car! He cannot just sit in the garage!
London: Well mister "sports car"... you're about to get a dent in your bumper. Mild sexual humour.

  • "Poor Little Rich Girl":
Maddie: Now it's time to strip and make the bed.
London: (starts to unbutton pajamas) Okay, if that's what poor people do...
(Audience cheers) DIH. The studio audience wasn't live.
    • The same episode has the twins accidentally watching a video of their mother giving birth to them. You don't actually see anything, but you can hear their mom crying out and Cody yelling "fast forward, fast forward!". They finally think they've fast forwarded to a safe part...until they realize there's another baby coming (as they're twins), and you can hear the nurse yell "PUSH!" and again Zack desperately trying to fast forward. Nothing important here.

  • "Twins at the Tipton":
Zack: Dude, they're twins! Gorgeous twins. On vacation. What they do in Boston stays in Boston!
    -
Moseby: (After knocking over a bulletin board set with plastic letters) Ohh. I landed on my A.
  • In "The Odd Couples" we see a "Don't Be a ***" sticker on the door of Zack & Cody's bedroom, partially covered up.
    • And only about three letters are covered. The "k" in the last word is clearly visible. ''I'm unsure what this is implying; it probably says "jerk".
  • "The Prince & the Plunger":
Cody: We'd better work fast before Mom gets the urge for Serge.
    -
Arwin: So I was leaning over a toilet, plunging...in and out, in and out, in and out... Both DIH.
  • "Sleepover Suite":
    -
Cody: Nia, get me my ice cream smock. Zack, keep London in the bath.
Zack: (with enthusiasm as he heads toward the bathroom) I'll go get my snorkel!
  • "Pilot Your Own Life". It has to be seen to be believed, but Zack and Cody have the following exchange while London and Maddie are having a cat fight:
Cody: This is terrible! We have to stop them!
    Zack: Not yet...
    • And later...
Cody: You're right Zack! This would be much better with pudding! What is "this"?
    • From the same episode:
Cody: Don't let fear in your cockpit!
Carey: Don't let what in your where?
  • In "Super Twins", Cody starts staring and while he's really concentrating on an object (Since he got telekinesis) Zack asks "Oh dude, you got X-Ray vision didn't you?" while looking at a girl. Would be fine if PG.
  • "Lost in Translation":
Cody: (Says something in a foreign language)
Maddie: (smiles) Okay, should I thank you, or slap you? No context. No clue.
  • One episode has London try to win back her boyfriend that dumped her for another girl by dressing up as a mermaid.
Other girl: Well at least my seashells aren't fake! Feels more like a comment about clothes than breasts.
    • Also from that episode:
London: Ow, I fell on my booty!note  This would be fine in TV-Y.
  • "Kept Man":
Maddie: I was up all night taking care of the baby.
Cody: What baby? I didn't even know you got married!
Maddie: Please Cody! I'm only 16. And I've never even kissed a boy.
Cody: Oh please! Save it for the nuns! Is this even a sex joke?
  • "Fairest of Them All":
Carey: Zack, why are you wearing a skirt?
Zack: I did it so we can win money for bikes.
Carey: (Looks very relieved) Oh, thank goodness! 'This seems fine for US & UK, but might be edited in regions with more transphobic content regulations.''
  • "Not So Sweet 16":
Zack: Esteban, I need to talk to you.
Esteban: (horrified) Don't tell me you want to talk about the birdies and the bees!
Zack: Easy there, tiger, I already had that talk with my dad.
    • Then later when Zack is talking to Cody about when Maddie told them what she wanted for her birthday:
Zack: What was I doing when she said that?
Cody: Staring at her and thinking about that talk we had with dad. Fine for TV-PG.
  • In "Of Clocks and Contracts", Zack, acting as Carey's agent, tells Mr. Moseby that the only reason people see the shows in the lounge is because of the "glamor puss up there shaking her goodies." Made worse due to the fact that he was referring to his mother!
    • He later gives her money for a candy bar, but tells her to only get one so her "goodies won't go bad." Maybe not in the best taste, but I don't think there are rules against this.
  • In "Arwinstein", Carey, dressed up as a corpse bride at a Halloween party, says that if she eats one piece of candy, her dress would pop right open. Immediately after, Arwinstein eagerly hands her a bowl of candy. Fine if TV-PG.
  • In "Ah! Wilderness", Maddie comes to the Martins' suite while Carey is getting a massage. She tells Carey that a smart, handsome and rich boy has just asked her out. Carey asks "Does He Have a Brother?" The masseuse, a Sassy Black Woman, asks "Is he a brother?" This seems mostly like a slang-based pun, but I'm not familiar with "brother" in this context. Soul Brotha is a pothole.
  • The plot of one episode involved Zack and Cody accidentally making a peephole into a room full of girls. They eventually get caught but not before telling their friends and charging them to look through the hole (they don't really get to see anything, by the way).
  • One episode has the twins hiding the hotel horse in their suite (long story) and it starts licking Carey across the face while she's asleep. She does some moaning and giggling before saying "Oh, Mr. Clooney, we hardly know each other." Fine for TV-Y.
  • The second-to-last episode that marked the first appearance of the S.S. Tipton had a similar moment to the "Snakes on a Boat" episode. Once Carey learns they're only on the boat because she has to perform at almost every event (it was supposed to be a vacation), she presumably lets out one big string of swear words that are drowned out by the ship's horn. We have a trope for this!
  • Some moments from "A Nugget of History":
    • The opening lines of the episode deal with Zack getting bitten *somewhere* by a turtle.
Zack: That's why you should never keep a snapping turtle in your back pocket.
Maddie: (horrified) That is the last time I ask you what's new. Seems fine.
    • London tells Maddie that she doesn't know what "air quotes" mean and tells her that she thinks that it's an obscene gesture. At the end of the scene, London manages to offend Maddie and as she walks off, Maddie uses the "air quotes" gesture towards her. Fine if TV-PG.

I'll deal with On Deck later, though it appears to be more of the same.

I changed This example in Anime & Manga:

  • Also in Kirby, we get Bouncy Tiff, which made it into the 4Kids dub with less editing than you'd expect.
  • In the Escargon Robo episode there is a moment that, when taken out of context, looks like King Dedede is raping Escargon. It did make into the dub.

to

  • Also in Kirby, we get Bouncy Tiff, a version of Tiff with massive breasts, which made it into the 4Kids dub with less editing than you'd expect.
It's commented out because I wasn't sure what the 4Kids policy was.

And cut this:

I cleaned up Radar. The Real Ghostbusters a while back, but someone's added an example since then that I'm not sure counts:

  • In "Something Going Around" the 'doctor' that gave the Ghostbusters some health-chips that were tainted by something that would make humans allergic to ghosts (or anything ectoplasmic) went by the name "Dr. McCatheter". Catheters are used for many different functions, but are best known for being inserted into the bladder to assist in urination.

This seems to me more like Toilet Humour than Radar.

Yeah, there's nothing under the radar about that.

I think the Boogieman entry needs cleaning because of the illegal sub-bullet, which appears to be a Repair, Don't Respond violation. Given that it's Peter's statement that is the dodgy reference, I don't think there needs to be any speculation about what the parents may have thought. The statement alone is enough to create the required reference. Although, given how blatant it is, I'm not sure it's really a radar example. It's more like a reference that would fly over the head of any kids watching the show, but which adults would understand immediately.

A while back, I found something very interesting about the MAD subpage. You see, there’s an entry about something being Censored for Comedy, with the speaking character being suspected by another of saying "the M-word". For some reason, someone deleted the note below that about the suggested word being "midgets". However, the interesting part is that I checked the history and found that this entire example was originally added by someone who thought the word was "molesters".

Three examples from Radar.Dream Works Animation, under The Prince of Egypt:

  • "Ladies, please, you've cleaned every inch of me — WHOA! I was wrong."
  • After Moses and Tzipporah marry, the next scene may or may not take place after their wedding day. Regardless, we see Tzipporah with her hair all over the place and she's asleep like a log. An "after sex" scene.
  • Tzipporah was given to Moses and Rameses for two reasons. One: The priests make sure to highlight her beauty. Two: Rameses and Moses both seem fairly, um, excited. Three: Rameses somewhat suggestively grabs her by her chin. And four, the real cinch: Rameses has her sent to Moses' bedchambers.
I think the first one is the closest to matching the trope, but it still might fall under Demographically Inappropriate Humor. The second one, less so. First off, the scene takes place much longer after the wedding day based on how much longer Moses' hair has grown out since then. Also, just because we see Tzipporah sleeping soundly does not mean it's an "after-sex scene." I have no idea what the third one could fall under. Not Demographically Inappropriate Humor, since it's not played for comedy. What do y'all think?

Found an example that was commented out on the page for the Christian rock band Jars of Clay, and I know enough context that I tentatively think I could rewrite and re-add it. Just posting here to confirm if it fits here or Surprisingly Lenient Censor:

  • Christian music radio is a lot more strict about sexual content than mainstream stations. According to a 2011 blog post by Jars of Clay's Dan Haseltine, when they released the album The Long Fall Back to Earth in 2009, the song "Closer" was considered as a radio single, then rejected because the line "I miss your skin" was too risqué. So label executives picked "Heaven" as a radio single instead, completely missing that the lyrics were an extended metaphor for physical intimacy—or to be blunt, it was Jars' first "sex song". Dan Haseltine insists they didn't deliberately set out to trick Christian radio stations into playing a song about sex—they just waited a few years before correcting everyone who mistook it for a song about Heaven.
Dan Haseltine: We are not the first Christian band to write about sex. But we might have been the first to have our “sex” song picked as a Christian radio single. Our intent was never to fool anyone. But it was amazing to me that “Closer” off of the same record was not chosen as a radio song because it used the word, “skin” in the lyric. I was amazed that the word skin would be such a risk and that it would be considered crossing a line. [...] But the one song that radio was willing to play was the song about the subject that is MOST taboo in Christian culture. I smiled every time I heard it on the radio.

I didn't write any of that.

Sorry to add more posts to the cleanup pile. I just found this on The Spongebob Movie Sponge Out Of Water. While I haven't seen the movie, this page is pretty short, and it hasn't been updated since 2018. This shouldn't be too hard.

  • As the Invincibubble, SpongeBob tells everyone to get ready for "some serious aft-kicking here!"note  I feel like there's a trope for this, I just can't remember what it is. Regardless, they don't outright say ass, and I'm pretty sure stuff like this has happened in kids shows before.
  • Squidward sliding and flailing on the lower back of the sunbathing woman is a little...suggestive. I checked one of the trailers and it is a little weird. It's still just Parental Bonus though.
  • At one point during the film, Plankton suggests that post-apocalyptic Bikini Bottom should be renamed to "Dirty Bottom". SpongeBob does a bit of Lampshading there. Toilet Humor and/or Joke of the Butt.
  • The scene with the ice cream girl is suggestive, to say the least. However, it appeared only in the trailers and TV spots. "Character finds another one hot" isn't objectionable at all. Would it really count if it wasn't in the actual movie anyway?
  • During the Rap Battle, one of the seagulls swears, which is censored by a bar and dolphin noise. Censored swearing in kids shows is fine. Sailor Mouth wouldn't exist if it wasn't.
  • Plankton's code name for Karen earlier in the film is "laptop", to which she considers demeaning. Accidental Innuendo. Karen considers it demeaning because she can process a lot better than a laptop.
