Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Okay, so I am watching WesternAnimation.Gremlins Secrets Of The Mogwai and Matthew Rhys plays a character similar to his role as Belos in The Owl House. In episode 2, he demonstrates unnatural magic powers, glowing green eyes, and soul swallowing abilities. Actor Allusion?

From Trivia.Big Brother: Now that Old Shame is In-Universe Examples Only, can this go under Bury Your Art instead?

  • Old Shame: The producers like to treat unpopular seasons like this. So far Seasons 9, and 15, generally regarded to be the "worst" 2 seasons, are the only ones not to have any houseguests compete again on a later season, suggesting the producers try to stay away from them when casting for returning players.
    • Big Brother's first season might as well have never existed; ever since Season 2 changed the entire format, season one has never been mentioned or referenced, with the exception of George's appearance in Season 7, aka the "All-Stars" edition.
    • Season 19 evidently joined the lineup when, for undisclosed reasons, the official Big Brother channel enacted a purge of all but one clip of the season, including live feed footage. Worse, it also drew attention to a popular Youtuber under the handle House Kitty 2, who posted live feed material from both BB 19 and the ongoing BB 20 at the time of the takedown, resulting in their channel being terminated (with the user apparently posting a brand new one, minus all the clips they had up at the time). This has effectively destroyed months of footage that one cannot see unless they subscribe directly to the live feeds or use the Wayback Machine to pinpoint.
    • Season 4's "Ex Factor", which is infamous for driving one contestant insane, powering some houseguests to give into their libidos, and a lot of unpleasant feelings throughout the season, has become a twist that the show doesn't dare go back to again.
    • Partially inverted with Season 19: Despite its unpopularity, producers took the one universally liked part of the season (Paul losing for a second time) and ran with it. Associations between Paul and the number 2 were present on both of the following seasons.

I found one Downer Ending example of Clonus where I think it's either Bittersweet Ending or "Ray of Hope" Ending because it says something like "the only bright side".

  • Downer Ending: Richard is killed and put on ice, Lena is lobotomized, and most of the people who helped Richard are murdered. The only upshot is that Clonus is publicly exposed.

Which tropes fits the examples better? "Ray of Hope" Ending or Bittersweet Ending?

I think if it’s more sad than happy, then Ray-of-Hope. But if it’s mostly happy with a bit of sad, then Bittersweet.

[up][up] I think it's more sad then a happy ending since the main character and the people who helped him died and the Love Interest is lobotomize . The only happy part is that the Big Bad and his company got exposed. So should I change it to "Ray of Hope" Ending since it kinda fits? And also should I rewrite this example if I change the trope?

I would only call it a Ray-of-Hope if the Big Bad is shown to face punishment for the evil actions commited. If it's not the case, then for all we know said Big Bad may escape after being exposed and get away like that, so there's not really a "ray of hope" to speak of.

Found this under Pocahontas.Tropes A To J. I'm unsure about it, it's a potholed trope name for one, but the trope seems to only be about parents marrying evil people?

  • Guess Who You're Marrying: Powhatan tells Pocahontas that Kocoum wants to marry her and he seems to be a neutral example of this trope. Pocahontas however, is less than thrilled due to the warrior's stoic nature.

Dark Is Evil and Token Evil Teammate are both linked in the character pages for Fire Emblem: Awakening for two characters (the Dark Mage duo, Tharja and Henry). Nothing says in the main trope pages for either of these say about anything. It's very likely that they both can co-exist, though synergizing with each another in conjunction as tropes? I'm not sure about that opinion actually.

I was actually considering should it be made clear that both tropes can co-exist together, and Token Evil Teammate can justify using a playable/allied character's Dark Is Evil even if they're not effectively a Villain Protagonist, or otherwise they would be forced to only have the Dark Is Not Evil trope instead if they're on the side of the heroes. Actually, this might be wrong in fact, so that's the main reason why am I asking this.

Or alternatively you can say that the Dark Is Evil (or Dark Is Not Evil, but only one of these depending on the answer) trope part downplayed because this character is a Token Evil Teammate. Which one is the best choice for explanation?

Everyone's got their unique qualities.

[up][up]Without knowing the work, I don't see an issue. They can coexist without one downplaying the other, e.g. everyone on the superhero team wears white and yellow except for the Token Evil Teammate who wears black.

From Characters.Scooby Doo's entry for Scrappy-Doo, trope namer for The Scrappy:

  • Author Avatar: He bears a significant resemblance to Joe Barbera in certain respects: New York City is the hometown of both, Scrappy's father never appears in any series, even for his son's birth, and Joe's father abandoned the family when Barbera was fifteen. Scrappy's relationship with his Uncle Scooby took far more precedence than the absent father, as did Joe's maternal uncle Jim fill in as a father.

...that feels a little bit like a stretch? A New Yorker who's close to his uncle with a Disappeared Dad, or at least an ambiguously absent one. Is that enough?

("an Author Avatar is a direct analog, as if the author were dropped directly into the world they've created")

I'll just put this here to be extra sure... If a sentence admits that something is not an example, it's not worth mentioning then, right?

Found this on Refrain from Assuming:

  • Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening:
    • The song at the credit roll is titled "Devils Never Cry", although a lot of people still call it "The Devil's Cry", after the last words of the song. Humorously, the song featured in the fourth game ("Shall Never Surrender") does not fall under this trope.

Yes, the DMC3 example is valid, but somebody decided to append a song from DMC4, even if it also admits the DMC4 song does not fall under this trope.

Easy cut for that last sentence, right?

Is this a good fit for Pronoun Trouble? Also, if the example is valid, I have the nagging feeling that it might be a bit long-winded or otherwise confusing.

  • Yellow Brick Ramble: Tip is assigned male at birth with very clear signs of gender dysphoria, but doesn't realize that means he's Transgender yet. One of the ways this manifests is in insisting Jack call him "mom", which results in Logan realizing Tip is "a girl" and falling in love with him. As a result, Logan's internal thoughts use she/her when referring to Tip, but the rest of the story uses he/him. Lampshaded by The Rant near the start of Chapter 3:
The Rant: Reminder: Logan figured out that Tip is a girl, but Tip somehow hasn't figured out he's a girl yet, and Logan doesn't know that Tip doesn't know that he's a girl. It's very simple and straightforward and nobody should be confused.

I don't think the ATLA examples in Love Dodecahedron given that there really isn't a whole lot of competition between the candidates for love interest.

  • The original series:
    • Aang. He's both The Hero and alphabetically the first character. Aang early on develops affections for one of the other core three characters, Katara. Katara later develops feelings for Aang as well and eventually chooses him. Aang is also the target of a strong crush by Meng, the assistant to the fortune teller Aunt Wu. Also, nearly all of the young girls on Kyoshi island are Aang fangirls, attempting to win his affections.
    • Katara has strong feelings for Aang, but it takes her time to sort out exactly how she feels about him. She also develops an off again on again, sometimes hostile feelings with the freedom fighter Jet. She also, at one point, opens up her heart to angsty Zuko, and considers using the Plot Coupon magic water on him. Some interpretations of the show also hold that her feelings towards Haru the earthbender are romantic (Toph seems to think so too).
    • Sokka first becomes romantically attached to Suki, one of the warriors of Kyoshi island, who opens his eyes to the fact that a person can be both a girl, and a warrior. Later on, after they have separated for a time, Sokka develops a strong attachment to Princess Yue, the princess of the Northern Water Tribe. They go on several dates before, as Sokka puts it "My first girlfriend turned into the moon."note  After leaving the north pole, they pick up the fourth member of their four kid band, the earth bending master Toph Beifong. She eventually develops a one-sided affection for Sokka. Acrobatics and pressure points master Ty Lee definitely thinks that Sokka is cute, and is quite flirtatious with him, even in the middle of combat. At several points in the series Sokka returns at least some measure of the flirting. Suki later joins the group on a more permanent basis, and the two get together. Then there's the way he treats his boomerang...
    • Prince Zuko is in love with with Mai, the daughter of a bureaucratic noble family, and member of Azula's three girl band. In one episode Zuko also becomes involved with Jin, a girl from the earth kingdom city of Ba Sing Se.
    • In the simplest terms possible - the Avatar fandom has paired everyone with everyone else at some point or another. So, naturally, all the above mentioned dodecahedrons and then some tend to show up.

[up] To be honest, Avatar is a series that doesn't use romance as a source of drama (except in the case of Yue) but rather presents it in a fairly straightforward way. When they do show a possible couple, they either stick with it until the end or it just some sort of Ship Tease that doesn't last more than one episode, maybe two.

I said to cut it all.

  • The Night Unfurls: Subverted and defied in the original version. The Rad Arc builds up the threat level of Shamuhaza’s mutated monstrosities by having Kyril’s soldiery, who are previously shown as competent Men of Sherwood, struggle for the first time, taking more casualties than usual. However, these people go to great lengths to avoid being expendable, such as securing the flanks in battle, planning their next actions, freeing the other scattered forces, and replenishing their strength. As the battlefield moves to the Fortress City of Rad (i.e., the climax), Kyril opts to lead a band of twenty to sneak into the fortress city rather than putting all his eggs in one basket. In order to minimize casualties, he diverts the troops to a less problematic area while he and his apprentices press on towards the hornet’s nest. In the end, the hard-fought battle is won, but the narrative treats the losses sustained in Kyril’s company seriously by putting emphasis on the burials, the mourning, and the rebuilding process.

So I just recently added the Five-Man Band trope to this, even though V was just one character in Cyberpunk 2077. And I thought I'd include it because they're a customizable character who could be built into any number of five-man band archetypes, based on which attributes and skill sets you want to specialize them in.

So if any time there is a game that gives you a customizable character that could be built into any one of several different five-man band archetypes, would they be considered a one-person five-man band, if that's a thing?

That's not a thing. Five-Man Band is specifically a dynamic in a group, each member having one of the classic roles. Customization of the archetype may be Character Class System or Job System.

Another question, though:

I went to Opposite Tropes, and recently put down Magic and Science vs. Swords and Guns, because I thought that magic and swords were like the brains and brawn to a fantasy setting, in much of the same way science and guns were to a science-fiction setting. I also put down The Squad vs. Command Roster on that page, as well, because the former fights and dies on the frontlines, while the latter issues orders and plays a support role at home base.

Would they have worked as opposites, though? Was I in the right to put them down on that page the way I did?
