Art by Crash X Fusion: Who looks to be the very best?note

Amity visits her grandparents and ends up making the biggest decision of her life while Odalia comes to a decision of her own. At the same time, Luz and Gwendolyn go looking for a hydra.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • The Ace: Nina Fangs, a junior at Glandus High, is the top student of the school's Beast Keeping track.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Beast Keeping has the bonus of being able to find hoards of treasure when dealing with beasts.
  • Back from the Dead: The chapter ends with Camila arriving at the Owl House alive.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Lilith, Odalia and Alador arrive just in time to save a captive Amity and King from Arthur and Destiny.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Two from Odalia; the first was after she learned about Amity's deal with Lilith, the other is after Lilith tells her Amity's visiting Arthur and Destiny.
  • Body Horror: Alador's older siblings each suffered severe mutations thanks to the accidents they got into while working in their parents' factory. Alton has a skeletal face and his femurs sticking out of his arms, Alice's ribs stick out of her stomach, and Ardon & Addy have their heads on the same body, skull jaws and teeth sticking out of their belly.
  • Brutal Honesty: King bluntly tells Arthur and Destiny that Amity's wondering if they're secretly evil.
  • Call-Back:
    • Eda tells Hooty to make sure Glandus students don't attack the house again while everyone's out.
    • After telling her parents about her initial mugging, Amity mentions the attack at Cat's house along with her telling Lilith what happened.
    • Luz brings up going through the Eclipse Escape Dungeon from Chapter 46 as well as Amelia and Cat's help at the petrification ceremony and with the petition.
    • Luz also remembers chasing down Spot and fears the Hydra might be another Underworld escapee.
    • Remembering Phil, Amity is sure to ask her grandparents if abominations can have souls.
    • Odalia reminds Lilith of her warning that Eda would hold her back, which was seen in Lilith's memories during the penultimate chapter of the last book.
    • Amity brings up making her own story, which Puck told her to do in "Maternal Aspiration".
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Willow airs out her opinion of the Blight parents for forcing Amity to end their friendship.
  • The Cameo:
    • Willow appears at the Brookes' home dropping off Skara's homework before telling off the Blight Parents.
    • The Snaggleback is forced into helping the Demon Hunters with capturing the Hydra.
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Parody: The entirety of the A-plot (Amity and King visiting Alador's parents) is treated like a tribute to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
  • Cliffhanger: Camila's return and everyone's reactions to it.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Dusty is mentioned to be the top Beast Keeping student at Hexside.
    • Tom and Purple mention Eyepatch is still in jail.
    • Eda remembers when she and Raine went to see Rats and tells them that King called her mom.
    • The incident involving the Pied Piper is brought up as being part of the reason behind the creation of abominations.
    • The disappearances are brought up along with the Emperor's Coven spreading Anti-Fae propaganda.
    • Amity shows her grandparents a picture of her and Luz at Grom.
  • Crush Blush: Eda has one when Lilith reveals she's going to see Raine. She later shares one with Raine before they snap out of sharing a moment.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Dusty takes a serious loss against Nina in their Beast Battle that leaves him and Cutler severely injured.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Amity is the focus character here and like the last chapter, Gwendolyn gets some time to shine. Beast Keeping magic in general is also expanded upon.
  • Duels Decide Everything: As it turns out, Beast Keepers settle disputes by battling each other using their beasts.
  • Dynamic Entry: Alador makes one by punching in a window using abomination goo, knocking Arthur out in the process.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Nina Fangs is shown to be a merciless Beast Keeper who revels in tormenting and proving her strength over Hexside students.
  • Exact Words: "Amity Blight died that day, but Amity herself was alive and well." It's a meta example signifying Amity's time as a Blight is officially over.
  • Eye Color Change: Amity's eyes turn pink again during her demolition of the original Blight Industries. This time however, they end up staying pink instead of turning back to gold.
  • Failed a Spot Check: As Amity and King argue over the latter trying to explore Blight Industries' locked basement, neither of them notice Amity's shadow breaking the door's lock for them.
  • Fantastic Racism: Arthur and Destiny don't think much about humans, calling Luz "exotic" when they learn Amity's dating her.
  • For Your Own Good: Arthur claims that keeping Amity with him and Destiny permanently will be beneficial to her since they can "teach" her what being a "true Blight" means. Luckily, that's when Alador comes busting in through a window.
  • The Gadfly: Lilith went right below the belt when she tells everyone "taking care of her own business" is Eda's way of saying she's going to meet with Raine. When Eda asks if she wants to join them, Lilith says she'd rather not be a third wheel, earning an annoyed look from Eda.
  • Generation Xerox: Arthur is said to look like Alador but older and they are both powerful Abomination magic users.
  • The Ghost:
    • While Skara's parents appear and Willow visits her home to drop off her homework, the bard herself goes unseen.
      • During the latter statement, Willow mentions Principal Bump.
    • Gwendolyn mentions Eclipsa and how she came from another world with dimensional scissors, which leads to Luz considering finding some to visit the Pines Family.
    • Amelia and Cat are brought up as Luz thinks back to what they've done for her and her friends.
    • Luz mentions Viney while watching Gwen and Dusty's Beast battle.
    • Eyepatch is mentioned by Tom and Purple, who want to turn in the Hydra to pay his bail.
    • Amity brings up Coven Head Darius when she suggests getting his help to cure her mutated aunts and uncles to her grandparents.
    • Edric and Emira are mentioned near the end, Amity fearing that Odalia will be harder on them now that she's no longer part of the Blight family.
  • Hates Their Parent: Alador shows a strong display of hatred and resentment towards his parents for trying to harm his youngest daughter. He then bears witness to said daughter announcing her own hatred to Odalia for actions that she refuses to admit she's partially responsible for.
  • Held Gaze: Eda and Raine look into each other's eyes after Raine tells Eda motherhood's been good for her, but they soon turn away blushing.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Amity uses an abomination sword again, this time a machete to cut through her grandparents' overgrown lawn.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Lilith dumps on herself when she apologizes to Odalia for using Amity the way she did.
I'm sorry, for everything I've done and put your family through. I'm sorry for how our last talk went, I should never have let what happened to your daughter get out of hand. Apologizing to you won't erase everything I've done, you have every right to be mad at me. I know that you are her mother and I know that I don't deserve her. I don't deserve anything.
  • Hypocrite: Amity straight-up calls Arthur and Destiny these, as they prefer to keep their mutated children under wraps rather than get them help because they want to preserve what's left of their supposed reputation.
  • I Didn't Tell You Because You'd Be Unhappy: Lilith tells Amity that she didn't confess to Odalia's involvement in her cursing Eda because she believed her goddaughter would have assumed she was shifting the blame.
  • Improbable Age: As King points out, Amity would be too young to run the original Blight Industries, but Arthur and Destiny have no problem with it.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Slasher and Calypso inform Odalia and Alador about their daughters' encounters with the Inner Demon.
    • Amity, King and Lilith meet Arthur and Destiny for the first time.
    • Odalia and Alador learn Amity is dating Luz again.
    • Amity, King and Alador discover Odalia suggested cursing Eda to Lilith. Lilith later tells Luz, Eda, Gwendolyn and Hooty.
  • I Warned You: The Abomi-Goblins try to warn Amity and King not to go in the basement, but they don't listen and find Alador's mutated siblings.
  • Jaw Drop: Luz's reaction upon seeing Camila at the end of the chapter.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • Lilith wonders what the metal object she saw after dropping off Amity and King was before Odalia and Alador come to the Owl House to take Amity home with them.
    • While Amity questions how the door leading to the basement got unlocked, she isn't given much time to dwell on it before going to catch up with King.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
    • Luz states that the demon hunters seem to be recurring antagonists for her.
    • Yet again, Hooty claims he's the best character.
    • Amity declares she's finally begun a new chapter in her life free of her mother's control over her.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Alador had believed that his older siblings all passed away...until now. It's also as of this point that he learns of his wife having a hand in Eda being cursed.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters, Percy, Gwendolyn's beast, is a Spider Cat. Dusty's beast, Cutler, is a weasel with sickle blades on its paws.
  • Moment Killer: Hooty interupts our favorite couple having a moment (Luz reassuring Amity that everyone'll stick by her and they can rescue her siblings from Blight Manor if they need to) to tell Luz someone's at the door waiting for her.
  • Multipurpose Monocultured Crop: Abomination sludge can be used to create many things such as ornaments, hair-dryers, gazookles, bamboozles, even paint and animals. King questions how adaptable the stuff is when he and Amity are trying to escape the factory.
King: (as murals try to capture them) The paintings are alive!?
Amity: They're made from Abomination paint!
King: What can you not make with this stuff?! (An abomi-shark pops out of the river)
  • Named by the Adaptation: The female demon hunter is refered to as "Purple".
  • The Nameless: According to Lilith, names hold power in the Boiling Isles and if a witch speaks from the heart and disowns their family name, they're cut off from their family's magic which is practically impossible to undo.
  • Never My Fault:
    • Arthur and Destiny don't take responsibility for their kids' mutations being a result of their factory's lack of safety regulations.
    • Odalia attempts to utilize this with Amity, blaming Luz for Amity going to save her and her family with Amity subverting it by saying it was her choice. Odalia also has a downplayed moment when she reveals she gave Lilith the idea to curse Eda.
    • Lilith also lampshades this saying if she confessed to Odalia giving her the idea earlier, Amity might've seen it as her avoiding taking responsibility for her mistake.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Whatever beast Nina used on Dusty and Cutler left them seriously injured.
  • Noodle Incident: The Abomi-Goblins were children's assistants that were recalled when a child drowned in them.
  • No OSHA Compliance: In running the original Blight Industries, Arthur and Destiny had no safety regulations in place, not caring that their products were dangerous and blaming their children for not being competent enough to be careful when working there.
  • Not Helping Your Case: After admitting she had a hand in Lilith cursing Eda, Odalia tries to save face with Amity by telling her everything she does had been to help Lilith, Alador and her, saying she's keeping Amity's best interests at heart. This plays up what Arthur and Destiny told Amity about Odalia manipulating everyone in her life to get what she wants, and it really blows up in her face when she tells Amity to be a Blight.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Amity comes to see Odalia as being no better than Arthur and Destiny since she takes pride in upholding the Blight family name, which means hurting innocent people for their own gain.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Three.
    • Gwendolyn's beast battle against Dusty, which she wins.
    • Luz and Gwendolyn defeating the demon hunters.
    • Nina's battle against Dusty might also qualify to some extent since she beat him effortlessly.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Odalia has a flashback showing what happened when Amity told her and Alador everything about her deal with Lilith and her mugging in "Everything's Gone Wrong".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After learning Odalia suggested Lilith curse Eda and seeing Amity disown herself from the Blight family and destroying his parents' factory, Alador takes on a serious tone where he keeps cutting off Odalia when she tries to scold him and bluntly telling her they will be talking about everything, surprising her.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: After letting slip that she knew Lilith cursed Eda, Odalia admits she merely suggested it: Amity says she can still be held accountable.
  • Out of Focus: Eda and Hooty are the least focused-on main characters, Willow has a brief appearance, and Skara and Viney are only mentioned.
  • Parental Neglect: Arthur and Destiny had given up on taking care of Alador after trying to force him to be self-reliant, believing this is what led to him becoming dependent on Odalia. They also show no concern for their other mutated children, locking them in the factory's basement to "preserve" their reputation.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Odalia and Alador visited the Brookes to drop off a gift basket and check up on them after hearing about Skara's recent troubles.
    • Luz and Gwendolyn take Dusty and Cutler to the healer's after seeing what Nina did to them and are implied to have taken the Snagglebeast with them since he's got an appointment there.
  • The Reveal:
    • Several things about the Blight family are revealed:
      • The names of Alador's parents are Arthur and Destiny.
      • The family's ancestor, Abra Blight, was the creator of abominations.
      • Alador was meant to be the heir of the original Blight Industries.
      • Alador is the youngest of five children (the eldest is his brother Alton, followed by his eldest sister Alice, and twins Ardon and Addy), all of whom became abominations after having accidents while working in their parents' factroy.
    • Calypso joined a group called "Apple Blood Anonymous" in order to overcome her drinking problem. Willow gave her a brew of tea as a substitute.
    • Gwendolyn went through the Eclipse Escape Dungeon when she was Luz's age. She also heard about Eclipsa and how she came to the Demon Realm.
    • Beast Keepers form mutual bonds with their beasts when they learn to co-exist with them and use them in battle against each other to settle disputes. They can also change their bodies into animal parts.
    • Gwendolyn is revealed to have her own beast, a Spider Cat named Percy. Dusty has a Sickle Weasel named Cutler.
    • Before abominations, clay golems assisted witches until they had an uprising and were defeated. Then after the Pied Piper's visit, an event known as the "Baby Boom" repopulated witchkind and with a shortage of nannies/servants, Abra created abominations to aid families in rasing their children.
    • Raine will become Head of the Bard Coven within the next week.
  • Running Away to Cry: After destroying the original Blight Industries, Amity runs away and by the time Lilith and King find her, she seems to be on the verge of crying.
  • Saying Too Much: In telling off Lilith, Odalia lets slip that she knew Lilith cursed Eda... right in front of Amity and Alador.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Whatever the object Lilith saw before leaving the original Blight Industries is and its purpose.
    • Luz considers finding dimensional scissors so she can travel to Earth.
    • Nina Fangs makes it clear Luz will see her again.
    • Amity's newfound power and how she'll adjust to both it and being nameless.
    • The Cliffhanger at the end.
  • Shed the Family Name: Disgusted by both Odalia using people to get what she wants and Arthur & Destiny refusing to swallow their pride in order to get help for their children, Amity disowns herself from the Blight family.
  • Shipper on Deck: Gwendolyn is one for Eda and Raine: upon hearing Lilith say Eda's going to meet Raine, Gwen assumes she's going to propose to them.
  • Shout-Out:
    • In addition to Dusty, battles between beast keepers are treated like Pokémon battles. Tom and Purple also act like Jessie and James with the Snaggleback being forced to play Meowth's role, even going as far as to build a machine to capture the hydra not unlike Team Rocket's Pokémon capturing equipment.
    • Arthur is stated to be based off the Gene Wilder version of Willy Wonka, the former Blight Industries is based on his candy factory (also having a No OSHA Compliance) and the abomi-goblins serve as the Oompa-Loompas.
  • Stating the Simple Solution:
    • Luz has two of these; she asks why the demon hunters would build a device to capture the hydra instead of using their money to bail Eyepatch out of jail; when they retort making bail is expensive, she says to sell their device. The hunters ignore her on both accounts.
    • Amity tries to get her grandparents to get Alador and the Abomination Coven to cure their children, but they refuse to see reason.
  • Super-Speed: Nina achieves this after turning her feet into a cheetah's hindlegs.
  • Talk to the Fist: Alador punches his father in the face with an abomination fist and knocks him out when making his Dynamic Entry.
  • Tears of Blood: Abomination goo, most likely, as Amity sheds purple tears before leveling her grandparents' factory.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone:
    • Alador becomes fascinated by Hooty and listens to whatever facts the house demon tells him.
    • Odalia stops Lilith from badmouthing herself to state her appreciation for her and her sister taking care of Amity the past few days.
  • To Be a Master: From what Viney had told Luz, Dusty collects beasts and monsters that he comes across.
  • True Companions: Luz has come to accept Amelia and Cat as her friends since going through the Escape Dungeon together.
  • The Un-Reveal:
    • Nina doesn't elaborate on why people from Glandus have been ordered not to engage Luz.
    • Lilith and us are left wondering what that metal object was.
  • Wham Episode: Amity renounces herself as a Blight, cutting herself off from their magic, getting a partial Super Mode and her eyes change from gold to pink. Alador is revealed to have four older siblings who've been mutated into abominations due to his parents' unsafe working conditions. And most shocking of all, Camila in the flesh shows up at the end of the chapter.
  • Wham Line:
    • The line that gives this chapter its name:
Amity: (angrily) If being a Blight means being selfish and screwing over other people for your own benefit, then I want nothing to do with this family's name and its legacy! I renounce being a Blight!
    • Then the last line in the chapter:
    Camila: Hello, Luz.
  • Wham Shot:
    • While exploring the basement, Amity and King find a blue abomination in a cage with a label reading "Alton". They then find three other abominations, each with horrific mutations.
    • Upon renouncing her family name, Amity's eyes glow pink and she proceeds to obliterate the original Blight Industries factory with every drop of Abomination sludge on the premises. And once she's done, her eyes stay pink.
    • Again, Camila. Being. ALIVE!!!
  • You Are What You Hate: Arthur and Destiny fail to realize that they used and abused their children the same way, if not worse, than they accused Odalia of doing to her own.
  • Young and in Charge: Arthur was only 16 when he inherited the original Blight Industries from his father, and he and Destiny want Amity (who's 14) to run and restore the business with them.
