Truly a battle of the ages
Voltes V Versus Voltron The Godaikin Wars is an infamous So Bad, It's Good fanfiction published on Fanfiction.net.

The plot centers around Voltes V protecting the Earth from Team Voltron when they are mistakenly viewed as space invaders. It mostly consists of Team Voltron suffering, being beaten down and humiliated, with cameos from Daimos and Shaider as Voltes V delivers the brunt of the action. The rest of the Earth similarly begins to view Team Voltron as a threat and even the Earthern military joins the war against them.

The fanfiction was written at the height of the Fandom Rivalry between Voltes V and Voltron. Voltes V fans often accuse Voltron of They Copied It, So It Sucks! towards their franchise.

It is 84 chapters and 64,513 words long. Part 1 was published on November 6, 2006 and completed on May 15, 2008note . It is free to read on Fanfiction.Net. Part 2 and Part 3 were finished not long after, but unfortunately, they're paywalled.

Think of it as the mecha anime equivalent to My Immortal. It also has it's own site (now defunct).

You can read it here.

Bammm...Bammm....Kablam...Kablammmmmm!!!!! Voltes V Versus Voltron The Godaikin Wars has examples of:

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Almost everyone in Team Voltron.
    • Princess Allura (someone reluctant to using violence in the original anime) is in favour of hitting kids.
"Why…this Voltes Team is just kids…"Princess Allura voiced her observations. "And these children need spanking!"
    • Late in the fic, Keith and Lance have an arguement. Keith tries to settle it by shooting his laser pistol at Lance's head.
    • In Chapter 50, Hunk starts screaming that the staff of Daimovic are "yellow bellied gooks".
  • Adaptational Villainy: In Part 3, everyone watches a documentary that shows light on Voltron's "true" origins.
They even learned about Voltron's proud heritage: Long before the Galaxy Alliance came to existence, Voltron was a haughty mechanoid, famous for challenging different super robots from all galaxies.
Infact, it was too proud and remorseless, Voltron does not care if ever it destroys a giant robot who was the sole defender of its respected planet.
    • And later:
Until, a beautiful space goddess punished the arrogant Voltron; Using her magic, Voltron was disassembled into five parts & These became the Voltron Lions.
Then a league of so-called "Good Planets" to maintain peace throughout the universe assembled the Galaxy Alliance.
King Zarcon and his Planet are an alleged space conqueror that threatens the Galaxy Alliance so they send a special force of space explorers to search and re-activate Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
The showing session was barely finished when Steve suddenly left his seat and walked away.
Mark noticed the other young man's discomforts.
  • Adapted Out: Prince Heinel is mentioned a few times as a threat to the Voltes Team but never shows up, and his antagonist traits are given to Keith.
  • Age Lift: Dr. Sakaonjinote  was straight of college in the original anime, but here, he's mentioned to look "like an Amish priest in laboratory uniform". It's likely the author got him mixed up with Professor Hamaguchi, who actually fits that description.
  • Ambiguously Christian: Sakaonji. In canon, he held a Christian/Buddhist funeral for Girion, and in the fic, he's mentioned to look "Amish".
  • Artistic License:
    • Princess Allura states that the Voltes Team "is just kids", but they are actually teenagers. Hiyoshi is the only one who's a kid.
    • Voltron is a robot, but when Voltes V uses the Sword of Heaven/Tenkuuken (chapter 15), it bloods start gushing out of it's wound.
  • As You Know: Romelle often regurgitates information about the plot of Voltes V to Bandor (and by extension the viewers).
  • Author Avatar: Paul the Imjad for the author. He has a deep hatred for Voltron and makes it known every time he gets the chance, but for some reason never badmouths Voltes V (even though he's the Big Bad and they're the Big Good).
  • Based on a Great Big Lie: It turns out that all the prophecies foretold by the Castle of Lions was a ruse by Paul the Imjad to trick Team Voltron into fulfilling his goals.
  • Big Stupid Doo Doo Head: Mark says that Voltron "doesn't even have fingers to pick on his own booger!"
  • Bolivian Army Ending: The fic ends with Voltes V taking out Voltron for good, while Paul the Imjad laughs at it's demise and says that This Is Only The Beginning. Meanwhile, Shaider battles the remaining Voltron members and throws them into a space-time portal. It seems like a set up for a Sequel Hook, but nothing comes further.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Hunk thinks Asians are "yellow" and "gooks" but he's based on Tsuyoshi Seido from GoLion, who is Japanese.
  • Butt-Monkey: Voltron is blamed for everything that goes wrong (though this is also their own fault for starting fights they can't win).
  • Captain Obvious: Edward Kramer declares "that enemy woman really is bad news!".
  • Combining Mecha: Voltes V, which is combined by five vehicles, and Voltron, which is combined by five mecha lions. They fight against one another for most of the fic.
  • Composite Character:
    • Professor Sakaonji and Professor Hamaguchi are amalgamated into one character, with the latter's name and the former's appearance.
    • Keith is based on Keith from the Voltron anime and Prince Heinel from Voltes V. He takes Heinel's role as Kenichi's Arch-Enemy and even has some of his dialogue from the original anime.
  • Creator's Culture Carryover: You can tell that the author of this fic is Filipino because he uses the Philippine-dub names for the Voltes V cast. He calls The Leader of the Voltes Team "Steve" instead of Kenichi, The Heart of the team "Jamie" instead of Megumi and The Lancer of the team "Mark" instead of Ippei. He also calls the antagonist of Voltes V "Prince Zardoz" when his name is actually Prince Heinel, and the commander of the base "Dr. Hook" instead of Professor Sakaonji.
  • Crossover: Between Voltes V, Voltron, Combattler V, Daimos and Space Sheriff Shaider.
  • Damsel in Distress: Baron Hakone kidnaps Princess Erika to lure Richard out to a duel, and Allura similarly ends up in Daimovic, where she is to be tried as a criminal, after her amnesia.
  • Death by Racism: Sort of. Jeff (of Voltron Sea Team) tells Shaider that he's a "an armoured ape of a Jap" and that Japanese people are "yellow faced monkeys". Shaider gives him a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown before sending him through a space time warp.
  • Driven to Suicide: After witnessing Voltron destroy Daimos and Richard sink underwater, Erika loses her will to live. She decides to kill herself on Baron Hakone's ship, but is stopped by the Bio men, who send her back to Earth. Later, she finds out that her beloved survived, and the two reunite at Big Falcon.
  • Evil All Along: Team Voltron. While they're antagonists, there's a small chance for redemption for them since they were manipulated by Paul the Imjad. Koran takes advantage of this and suggests that they attend the next Earth Summit meeting so they can clarify that Voltron Force means no harm. Team Voltron attends the conference, but then try to murder Commander Robinson, showing that deep down, they're evil regardless of Paul's influence.
  • Fantastic Slur: Many members of Team Voltron like Keith and Jeff call the Voltes Team the "Voltes Gooks".note
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: Paul the Imjad. The only backstory we get on him is that he belonged to a group of mages, until one day he suddenly decided to be evil.. Apart from that, all we know about him is that he wears robes, he wants the destruction of Voltron, and likes listening to Tears for Fears. Oh, and he wants to Take Over the World.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Paul the Imjad for pulling the strings between Voltron and the world by stealing the microfilm.
  • Has a Type: Both of the women Richard shows attraction to (Erika and Allura) are pretty Human Aliens. Subverted as he loved Erika all along but had moments of Ship Tease with Allura.
  • Humiliation Conga: Voltron is tricked into fighting Voltes V, labelled as a war criminal in spite of being innocent, beaten to near-death by tons of other Super Robots, and eventually destroyed by Voltes V, who snap it's neck and throw it towards the remaining members of the Galaxy Alliance.
  • Hypocrite: Keith calls Richard a "karate freak", even though he himself is a martial artist.
  • Informed Ability: Voltron is stated many times to be stupid, weak, pathetic and "like training dummies" to the other robots, yet manages to heavily impact Combattler V and Daimos.
  • Only Sane Woman: Romelle is the only one who suggests that Paul the Imjad might be evil, pointing out how he's always secretive and surrounded by vicious minions.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Hunk is part of a Super Robot that defends the universe, but screams that Richard and his friends at the Daimovic Base are "gooks" and suggests that they'd rather commit seppuku since "that's a gook's code of honor".
  • Put on a Bus: Voltes V in the last two chapters. They finally crush Voltron, so the focus goes on Shaider and his duel with Jeff instead.
  • Rouge Angles of Satin:
    • According to Pidge, Keith is "a sight for sour eyes".
    • Also, during Jamie and Commander Robinson's duel.
As soon as Jaime landed, Cmdr. Robinson moves like the wind and slashes at Jamie's position.
Bit there was no Jamie to slash!
Mark bemoans that amongst husbands, wives and kids, "all their love ones" also died.
  • Nice Kitty...: Said word for word.
“Read you loud and clear, Stevie…” Tommy reassures the young Voltes V leader as he watches the Voltron Lions circling around Laserion.
    “Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty…nice Kitty…”
Suddenly The Voltron Black Lion charges, and from behind it follow the Voltron Red Lion then the Voltron Green Lion.
“Holy…!” Tommy was shocked! The Voltron Lions were so huge; the Voltron Black Lion alone is as large as Laserion!
  • Super Robot: The robots of the Robot Romance Trilogy and Voltron.
  • Take That!: The entire fic is one at Voltron. There isn't a single character that doesn't mock them or mention how uncool they are compared to other Super Robot anime, and Team Voltron's personalities are flanderized heavily to make them unsympathetic.
  • Token Good Teammate:
    • Lance is the only one who calls Keith out for being a psychopath and admits that the Voltes Team's assessment of them is correct. He still decides to fight Voltes V in the finale.
    • Romelle is the only one who sees that Paul the Imjad is a bad guy and encourages everyone to make peace with the Boazanians.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: Paul the Imjad, the Big Bad behind the events of the series. He was a mage who turned to the side of evil and wishes to use the Super Robots to his personal gain.
Trained to be pure and selfless, the mages are not immune to corruption: a renegade mage known as Paul the Imjad, planed to conquer the entire universe, aided by his unsavory minions. Tracing down the whereabouts of the ancient microfilm, to our planet Earth (the 3rd dimension Earth) Paul the Imjad stayed cautious, for according to the said ancient microfilm, the universe is guarded by the Godaikins: Gigantic Super cybernauts with varied destinies. The Imjad thought of thwarting this reality. Mobilizing his cronies, Imjad learned about a Godaikin who had a dark past. The Godaikin is Go-lion, (Voltron) a self proclaimed Defender of the Universe. With his twisted powers and philosophies, the Imjad was able to influence the medieval judgments of the entire Castle of Lions. He even influenced the Voltron Force and the House of Alfor by using pseudo prophecies that seemed to support the ancient prophecy that claims Voltron for being the defender of the Universe. The Imjad suggested to the Galaxy Alliance to help him retrieve the Encyclopedia Universale from the 3rd dimension Earth, and destroy it!
  • Verbal Tic: Keith says "punks" a lot, and a certain four-letter word used to refer to Asians.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Paul the Imjad is a fan of "Tears for Fears", and in the fight scene in Chapter 54, Baron Hakone hears "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" as Paul appears and kills him.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Voltron was this, except they couldn't even fulfill their use to Paul the Imjad. Thus, he's seen laughing when Voltes V tears them apart.
  • You No Take Candle: The fanfiction is riddled with awkward dialogue. Lance, after being attacked by Big Falcon, shouts "That base tries to kill us!". And in Chapter 33, Keith's choice of insult is "gleaming clown".
Keith: “…Now, that gleaming clown can taste the power of Voltron: Defender of the Universe!”
