The Eldritch Wizard is a Danny Phantom and Harry Potter crossover created by The Lone Lighthouse.

To call Danny’s life complicated is only half of it but things go from managably bad with bullies, school and his embarrassing family to worse when he accidentally switches on the portal from the inside. Now dealing with the fact he’s died twice, a constant storm of ghosts, an insane wizard death cult and a long-lost twin brother who has his own baggage and his proclivity for trouble. Oh, and he’s British. Now that’s the weirdest bit of it all.

Series can be found here on Ao3 The Eldritch Wizard

Tropes for this series include:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To say Maddie does not like Vlad was putting it mildly ever since the whole Colorado mess.
  • Accidental Discovery: Danny first figures out magic may exist when he is angry with Dash and accidentally uses his magical abilities of all things. It’s quite different than his ghost powers which are often cold. Beyond whacking the lockers against Dash and Kwan and exploding the street lights. Danny’s knowledge on magic while limited is starting to grow.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Danny has started his tenure in the wizarding world strong by waking up in just a few minutes after being hit by a stunning spell, successfully temporarily incapacitating Greyback (known and dangerous Werewolf) with a baseball bat, standing up to the most feared man in magical Britain, not even screaming while under Cold-Blooded Torture from the Cruciatus curse (something Peter has mentioned literally everyone else ALWAYS does) and escaping in mere hours of his arrival at Malfoy Manor (albeit with help from the house elf Mina).
  • Adults Are Useless: If not evil like Vlad, they are ignorant like Jack and Maddie and actively doing harm by their misconceptions or too busy arguing among themselves like the Order of the Phoenix when they discover Danny is alive and recently escaped from Malfoy Manor. Sirius is pointedly the only person in the room urging the others to go out and search for Danny, whilst others are sceptical about whether or not this is really Danny Potter. In other news, it took Jazz and Harry no time to find Danny. With Jazz, it was deliberately seeking out Wulf and Harry it was due to a post-it note by Clockwork.
  • Affably Evil: Voldemort tries to present himself as this to Danny when they first meet which Danny rightfully sees past him and calls him out for.
  • Ambiguously Human: While Danny knows for a fact he is firmly a Half-Human Hybrid, before his accident he would’ve been placed in this category and he knows that the years of living with the Fentons and being exposed to ectoplasm has placed Jazz into this category. Danny banks on this fact that Jazz will hopefully be able to withstand the dangers at Grimmauld Place as a result.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: The story starts with Clockwork manipulating Danny and his family’s memories of him but even before his accident, Danny remembered the names of his stuffed toys a deer, a wolf and a dog, (Prongs, Moony and Padfoot). After the accident, he starts to remember faces and his old family members but not the full extent of who they were or why he lost them.
  • Back from the Dead: Danny twice. And Voldemort as well. It is also implied from Clockwork’s warnings to Danny that Harry destined to die could still lead to Harry coming back anyway.
  • Badass Boast: Danny’s “Watch me.” When told he can’t change fate.
  • Badass Normal: The Fentons compared to the wizards and ghosts of the series, they have no magical or supernatural abilities. Just a lot of gumption and technology they made themselves. Jazz alone has managed to track Danny down in almost no time compared to the wizards and is active in assisting Danny with the ghosts. Sam and Tucker also qualify.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Played for Drama: Danny has just been kidnapped by Voldemort, learned his parents are dead and is worried that Jazz has also been killed. Voldemort's dialogue does seem to suggest it, at first referring to Danny’s sibling however the pronoun reveal for a male sibling leads to an Internal Reveal for Danny as he realises that he has a brother.
  • Bear Hug: Jazz gives a pretty heartwarming and gentle one to Harry when they first meet which Harry is taken aback by but accepts warmly.
  • Berserk Button: It is ill-advised to harm the people Danny Sirius Potter considers his family. Clockwork and Danny are the only two who know what kind of hornet nest Voldemort and the Death Eaters kicked up.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Danny gets one when he learns that he learns that Harry was recently in a Death Tournament and won said Death Tournament.
  • Blood-Splattered Innocents: Danny believes he is covered in blood for quite some time when fighting Skulker and freaks out over it. Thankfully it was just ketchup.
  • Blunt "No": Danny uses one to convey to Voldemort he is NOT going to be used as bait to lure Harry to his location.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Danny. His powers are restrained when both in Malfoy Manor and the Potter House. But in particular, in Malfoy Manor, it doesn’t stop Danny from escaping (albeit due to Mina) or from standing up to Voldemort. Even when he does escape, Danny uses no powers but his bare fists to deck two Death Eaters unconscious.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Big time. While the Death Eaters are not yet aware that Danny is a Dragon of such, still. Danny is pissed and the Voldemort and the Death Eaters messed up big time when they murdered the Fentons. (Jack and Maddie) Clockwork notes there is no force on this planet that will allow them to escape from Danny’s wrath. With that, the Death Eaters and Voldemort end is all but cemented at this point and they have no idea.
“When it came to those he considered his family, there was no where – earth or otherwise – you could hide from the wrath of Daniel Sirius Potter. Tom Riddle has made the fatal error. “
  • Changeling Tale: Danny is the changeling in this situation. He is mysteriously given to the Fentons as if he was always there. Yet when Danny and his friends check the photos they discover he only appeared a year later on Halloween 1981.
  • Creepy Good: Danny is shaping up to be one. In one fight against Skulker, he became more monstrous growing fangs and was terrifying to Sam and Tucker. He’s already terrified Voldemort with his cool calm and innocent passersby with just his regular form. Considering the fic’s title this should come as no surprise.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Part of what unnverses the Death Eaters and Voldemort to Danny is his attitude towards them. He should be living like a muggle that has no clue about the magical world. Yet he is completely unafraid of what’s around him and unsurprised. Voldemort even accurately clocks that Danny has no clue about anything about magic and why the Death Eaters took him and Danny admits as such to him.
  • Cool Big Sis: Jazz certainly plays this role, so much so she is essentially the parental figure in Danny’s life compared to Jack and Maddie. She is also shaping up to be a Cool Big Sis to Harry almost immediately after meeting him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Danny loves to give these out. He viciously attacks Skulker in one chapter but also to two death eaters who tried to kidnap him by just punching them in his human form.
  • Cutting the Knot: Most wizards expect a duel with wands and magic. Upon being attacked by two Death Eaters and about to meet Harry for the first time. Both Harry and the Death Eaters expect a magical scuffle but Danny ignores that whole concept in favour of beating the crap out of them with his bare fists. He wins.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Lily actually manages to talk with Danny briefly a bit after his accident when he is unconscious thanks to a ghost. It’s critical in making Danny realise there’s is something more going on in his life…Well, half-life.
  • Defiant Captive: Danny during his time at Malfoy Manor. He refuses to be afraid of the Death Eaters and to be bait for Harry. In fact he manages to scare Voldemort.
  • Deity of Human Origin: Danny is coming close to one with his rise to power as the King of the Ghost Zone.
  • Face of a Thug: When searching for the cold spots and possibly ghosts in London, Danny inadvertently scares off several people and young families with his demeanour. It’s not really his face so much as it’s Danny’s attitude to square up for a fight.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Jack and Maddie’s deaths are briefly foreshadowed in an exchange between Clockwork and Danny apologising to Danny for unknown reasons after he says that he can return home after the Dark is defeated and the False Lord returns.
    • Harry’s being a Horcrux is also foreshadowed when Danny notices that his scar has the same energy as Voldemort upon their first encounter. There is also Danny’s ghost sense which allowed him to find Harry in the first place which could play a role in that or the fact Harry survived the killing curse.
  • Freak Lab Accident: Danny’s "accident". Twice.
  • From Bad to Worse: Danny learns he is the Ghost King after nearly being decapitated in a Nasty Burger bathroom. That’s enough even for one day, but then upon talking to Jazz about it he hears his parents fall and assumes that the house is being broken into by burglars. It’s not. It’s Death Eaters and because Danny has no experience or knowledge he makes understandably incorrect assumptions and end up getting captured by them. And then he meets Voldemort who reveals magic and Danny’s past to Danny in the worst possible way.
  • Ghost Invasion: Clockwork implies Pariah's Dark invasion was inevitable as Vlad would release him with or without Danny. Without Danny to stop Pariah Dark, the end of the world would be certain on at minimum a planetary level and possibly beyond to the Ghost Zone and was the main reason why Clockwork himself took Danny to the Fentons.
  • Heroic Spirit: Despite being trapped in a place that actively suppresses his ghostly abilities and his healing factor. Danny refuses to cower or be afraid of Voldemort and he even manages to channel a threatening aura that actually scares Voldemort.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Danny did this to Voldemort completely in his human form with a look and determination. Despite Voldemort suppressing it to his followers, both Danny and Harry (who witnessed it in his dreams) know Voldemort is scared of him.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Danny remarks how weird Harry’s life is. Jazz firmly points out that his life is also if not weirder.
  • Internal Reveal: Several.
    • Danny has one when he finds out that his mother was not pregnant the day before he was born, since they were with Jazz at the beach and his visions with the red-haired lady meant a lot more than he realised.
    • Jazz has one when she realises that Danny was unknowingly adopted and her memories were manipulated.
    • Danny when he discovers the names of his parents and in the same chapter he discovers he has a brother still alive.
    • Harry has one when he learns he had a brother and how the people around him never told Harry of that fact. Like Petunia, the Weasleys, Dumbledore and especially Sirius.
  • In the Blood: Both Harry and Danny have a chronic problem of wanting to save people and also running away without informing people about what they are doing. Like Jazz puts it
    Jazz: “Oh no. It’s genetic.”
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Mad-Eye Moody may be cruel and paranoid in refusing to search for Danny but he does have a point about it being the Daniel they are looking for and questioning whether or not he is to be trusted.
Mad Eye Moody: "How do we know that this is Daniel? How do we know this is not a trick? How is it possible that a boy supposedly raised by muggles, with absolutely no knowledge of our world, is able to escape from a heavily warded building so quickly and so easily? No one even saw him do it! The boy is obviously a plant, and therefore should not be trusted."
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Clockwork casts some on the entire Fenton family so they won’t be suspicious with a young baby in their midst and Danny’s too. Until the accident when Danny starts to remember.
  • Lethal Chef: Jack Fenton is certainly one, which got him banned from making food for birthdays.
  • Loophole Abuse: Danny manages to get around Mina’s limitations by reuniting Danny and Harry directly by apparating them near where Harry is.
  • "Near and Dear" Baby Naming: Daniel "Danny" Sirius Potter's middle name is courtesy of Sirius Black, his godfather.
  • Nerves of Steel: Danny definitely. One does not become King by accident by cowing to enemies.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Danny could’ve dodged the stunning spell by the Death Eaters. His narration even confirms this, but he wanted to protect his unconscious mother and father who would’ve been hurt by the blast. As a result, Danny is captured by something he could’ve prevented. To make it worse Jack and Maddie were already dead, which made Danny attempts to protect them by taking the spell, even more worthless in the end.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: The deaths of Jack and Maddie signal a major changing point in the story, by making Amity Park not a safe place for Danny to be anymore and for others to assume he too also died after Fenton Works was destroyed to cover up the true cause of deaths.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: According to Jazz, she, Tucker and Sam stole the Mansons car and drove all the way to Wisconsin, managed to sneak past Vlad thanks to Sam and Tucker, enter the Ghost Zone on her own, find Wulf and find herself directly in Danny’s direction. All before the Wizards even got a chance to act.
  • Omniscient Morality License: Clockwork is one of the closest things to this story has to a Big Good in that he assists Danny when he is trapped at Malfoy Manor and directs Harry with a post-it note to find Danny. He even warns Danny directly about events to come. However, he deliberately took Danny away from his family, albeit to prevent the end of the world, erased and manipulated the Fenton's memories, sealed Danny’s magic and knew Jack and Maddie would die and yet did nothing about it. No wonder Lily called him one of the meddling old men with beards along with Dumbledore.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Danny and his first major introduction to magic. When the Fentons' home is attacked, Danny logically deduces it is either the Guys In White who figured out who he was and was raiding them based on that or some burglars who managed to get his black belt mother and his large father. Danny is perfectly reasonable in assuming that however, the Death Eaters are not really anything Danny is familiar with yet or even magic on a broader scale yet (Danny only suspects it exists). The main reason Danny even takes the stunning spell is because he didn’t realise his parents were already dead when was trying to protect them by taking the hit and wrongfully but understandably assuming it would be similar to ectoblasts.
  • Parental Neglect: The fic explores aspects of this with Jack and Maddie and how it impacts Danny especially since it was Jack’s Lethal Negligence which led to Danny accidentally activating the portal when was inside it.
  • Power Incontinence: After Danny starts having his ghost powers he starts to experience this quite frequently and while he does manage that. The trouble is when his wizarding abilities are starting to impact him as well. Danny’s abilities usually only impact him when he’s emotional. Which is nearly all the time since the portal opened.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: While not evil. Clockwork's first appearance to Danny as a teenager is certainly very sinister. He even comes with a warning to Danny about Pariah Dark and Voldemort.
  • Reluctant Ruler: Danny only recently figured out from the Fright Knight that he is now the King of the Ghost Zone. Danny can refuse to become king but he needs to appoint someone else instead. The problem is Danny is the most powerful person he knows out of his rogue gallery and the only one more powerful than him and his other rogues is Vlad of all people. Needless to say, Danny reluctantly accepts the call to become King out of necessity.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Danny himself. He appears halfway in his parent’s Halloween 1981 album almost out of nowhere. The readers know the truth of what happened. But Danny and his friends are baffled by how his parents missed this and why Danny appeared out of nowhere.
  • Scars Are Forever: Harry has his signature scar on his forehead but Danny also has Lichtenberg figures on his left arm to the sole of his left foot after he entered the portal and died. According to Tucker normal Lichtenburg figures usually clear up after some day but Danny’s never do.
  • Screw Destiny: Clockwork warns Danny that Harry is destined to die. Danny tells him to shove it. Later on privately Clockwork remarks upon Danny’s determination and despite the odds, whether it be pettiness, love or both. Danny will prevail and Clockwork if there was anyone who could override a prophecy it’s Danny.
As for his determination, it knew no bounds. Once he had set his mind upon something, there was nothing that would stand in his way. The chances of Daniel changing the course of his family’s future was quite slim, and yet….Daniel was constantly defying the odds, sometimes out of pettiness, or love, or out of both.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Danny gives a striking one to Voldemort.
Danny: “You’re right. I don’t know who you are, or what’s going on here. But what I do know, is that you murdered my parents. I know that you are a sadistic, vitamin D deficient, psychopath who wants to kidnap – and probably kill – my brother. What you should know, is that I won’t let you.”
  • Skewed Priorities: Upon dying a second time, Danny doesn’t remark on that whole subject so much as he mentions he rather have died in a hoodie and jeans for the next time. Keep in mind Danny’s death by electrocution in the portal is on par if not more painful than the crucio curse.
Danny: "If you were going to change my outfit, you could have at least let me die in something more comfortable. Like a hoodie and jeans.”
  • Spot the Thread: Danny mentions that his memories have been screwy since the portal and about meeting a strange woman with red hair and green eyes with a British accent. Sam and Tucker initially think it’s nothing until they find an album dating back to the day before Danny’s birthday July 30th with Jazz’s first time on the beach, revealing Maddie wasn’t pregnant with Danny.
  • Tempting Fate: Before Danny enters the portal he remarks how his parents' inventions never work. Well.. They are about to in to worst possible way.
  • The Unchosen One: Played with. Danny is both this and The Chosen One. He was deliberately brought to Amity Park by Clockwork since Clockwork knew if he didn’t the world would’ve ended by Pariah Dark if Danny wasn’t there to stop him, Clockwork even brings up it was Danny’s fate. But beyond bringing Danny to Amity Park Clockwork mainly only took advantage of the fact Danny is more like the Right Man in the Wrong Place due to his omniscience. Danny’s accident, and his drive to use them to be a hero and go up against Pariah Dark and defeat him, were all his own choices and nature. Later when told about Harry’s destiny to die, Danny is vehemently opposed and vows to change a future not yet written.
  • Trauma Conga Line: On top of dying twice, dealing with Vlad and multiple ghosts on a daily basis. Danny in just one day discovers he is now King of the Ghost Zone after nearly getting decapitated in a public bathroom, his parents made a torture device for the ghosts he is now the King of. Then he’s kidnapped and learns he is an orphan who lost both sets of parents has a brother and has a Wizard death cult gunning for said brother and got introduced to magic in one of the worst ways possible. Danny is just having a blast of a time really!
  • Weirdness Magnet: What allowed Voldemort to find Danny. He was informed that there was highlighting supernatural/ magical activity in the area and in the centre of it a boy who resembled Harry Potter.
  • Wham Line: It’s not a surprise for the readers but its counts as a major Internal Reveal for Harry
Dumbledore: “I’m afraid telling young Harry that his brother Daniel might be alive before we know anything would do more harm than good at this time.”
  • Wham Shot: Danny sees a picture of his family on the beach just before he was born. However, there is a problem.
“It was the day before he was born. And his mom wasn’t pregnant.”
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: Danny finds his parents winning a best couple costume contest. The thing was Jack and Maddie were wearing their regular jumpsuits when they won said contest.
  • Woken Up at an Ungodly Hour: An unfortunate fact with fighting ghosts is that they don’t care what time regular mortals go to sleep at. Danny describes a good week of sleep is getting five hours total.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Clockwork tells Danny this regarding Danny himself and why he was brought to Amity Park and Harry’s destiny to die. Danny response to that is Screw Destiny.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Jazz mentions to Danny the Death Eaters completely destroyed Fentonworks in order to cover the use of magic. Leaving the portal out of action and Jazz to go to Wisconsin. Most people also believe Danny to be dead alongside with his parents in the rubble.
