Like a Hero out of myths.

It's common sense — a normal human is woefully fragile. Without a quirk, one can't hope to be a hero. But, though he may not know it, Izuku isn't quite human, and a Quirk is not the only form of special ability that exists.

Like a Hero out of myths by Dartonus is a My Hero Academia crossover fanfic with Touhou Project where Hisashi Midoriya is only the alias of a certain youkai, making Izuku a half youkai. The author makes an effort in melding the two worlds as seamless as possible, and hopefully to make it as accessible to people new to Touhou as it can be. Although for people new to My Hero Academia it will be very hard to understand without knowledge of the series.

" admittedly, while I've done my best to try to make this readable for people who don't know Touhou, I'm fairly sure it's impenetrable if you're coming from the opposite direction)."

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Species Change: Izuku is half youkai, half human and half Tanuki to be precise.
    • Ochako becomes a Werewolf.
    • Overhaul is an exiled Lunarian.
  • Adaptational Badass: Despite not having One For All, Izuku is half youkai and for that has an Ability like others Touhou characters, can empower himself absorbing fear and surprise, making him tougher, stronger, faster, and with better reflexes tan a human overall (not at canon Izuku levels, but still).
    • Ochako becomes a werewolf, which makes her stronger, faster and tougher even that Izuku, can regenerate and lose her canon weakness of getting nausea when using her quirk, also like Izuku she becomes almost immune to most not mystic attacks.
    • Reiko Yanagi has the Ability to use magic becoming an apprentice Shikaisen
    • Kirishima is chosen as the new holder of One for All.
  • April Fools' Day: An entire chapter during the Training camp, is just a Dream of Tokoyami. And still has foreshadowing.
  • Ascended Extra: Reiko is in 1-A, and much more present in the story, Tokoyami also is far more present.
  • Back from the Dead: Besides the fairies and others characters with Resurrective Immortality, All for One came back from the dead twice thanks to Sariel and Izuku came back as a full Youkai thanks to Yukari machinations.
  • Balls of Steel: Like in canon, Kouta delivers a Groin Attack to Midoriya when he tries talking to him, unlike canon is Kouta the one that hurts his hand while Izuku hardly reacts, most readers assumes that is because Izuku is a youkai that he doesn’t react, but if you know about the Tanukis and how they use their scrotum for attack, defense, transport, etc… well it makes sense.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Izuku calls Mamizou by her name because he is not sure if he should call her dad or mom, or mom two.
  • Cessation of Existence: death to a youkai for lack of belief will result in this.
  • Chekhov's Gun: After telling Izuku, Ochako and Reiko the story of what really happened with the Hourai Elixir in her tale, Princess Kaguya and Eirin mentions that they left the Heavenly Feather Robe where it lay, but only a Lunarian could use it to brainwash someone and no Lunarian would dare go to Earth. Overhaul is an exiled Lunarian and the first time we see Eri she is the second in command of Overhaul and wearing a white feathered robe.
  • Christmas Episode: Yes there is one and yes is has Seiga Kaku dressed has Santa, and yes is in the wrong date in the story, and yes is pure comedy and heartwarming.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Belief is hugely important to the Gensokyo inhabitants. Youkai are created from humans ascribing the mysterious to unknown forces, and will fade away if people stop believing in them, Izuku goal is to become a hero, besides the same reasons in canon, because the belief that the people will have in him like a hero will allow him to live outside of Gensokyo.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: After reporting that Uraraka is a werewolf now and that he had to kidnap her from the hospital to save her, Aizawa responded to Izuku making clear how unnecessary that was.
Aizawa: “Midoriya, you’re smarter than that, UA provides treatment for its students, you could have come to us and we would have arranged for Uraraka to be taken into our care.”
  • Dark Lordon Life Support: An Heroic example, Izuku and later Uraraka depend on an amulet created by Sumireko that allows them to leech of the belief of occult sites like the Pyramids. If they get too far from their amulets, they pass out and could fade away in time. The amulet is a stopgap at best, they just need to become heroes and the belief that people would have on them would allow them to live outside of Gensokyo.
  • Death by Adaptation: When you put characters with Semantic Superpowers like the residents of Gensokyo in a crossover with My Hero Academia, this can happen.
    • Mineta was spirited away to Gensokyo and is killed by wolves right after the entry exam.
    • Ragdoll is murdered by Elis during the invasión to the training camp.
  • Death Is Cheap: For some Touhou characters it couln´t be cheaper.
    • Fairies exist as long as the aspect of nature they represent exists,
  • Demoted to Extra: Bakugou was the rival in canon, here he is far less prominent. All Might was the mentor originally, here he doesn´t participate in training Izuku.
    • All for One was [1] in the Official story, here is Sariel.
  • Disappeared Dad: Downplayed example, Hisashi Midoriya is very absent in Izuku life, but he keeps in touch with is family by letters he send at least once a month. Sadly justified because he is a youkai and has to stay in Gensokyo.
  • Astral Projection: When Sumireko falls asleep, she ends up projecting herself through the Dream land and travels to Gensokyo, Izuku can also do this but only thanks to his amulet.
  • Emotion Eater: All Youkai feed on fear, Tanukis can also feed on surprise.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: After Izuku had disappeared for two days, Tsukauchi is the detective that is working the case as a favor to All Might, when Izuku tells that he manifested a Quirk, and that was alone when that happened, Tsukauchi detected the lies and assumed that Izuku had been given a Quirk by All for One.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Izuku has one when Mamizou encourages him for the entrance exam mentioning the story of Nue being defeated by the hero Yorimasa the same story that his dad also mentions all the time to encourage him.
  • Eye Scream: the Cristal Eye balls of Yuugen Magan are her only weak spot, so Izuku drives a spear-hand strike in her eye, then Kirishima strikes the same Eye, then All Might.
  • Fantastic Nature Reserve: Gensokyo is a Magical Land that was sealed off from the rest of Japan in the Meiji Era, and explicitly exists to preserve the supernatural creatures who would otherwise die off due to lack of belief.
  • Foreshadowing: Too many examples, let's just say that this is a very present trope, heck even the news in a radio or a joke could be foreshadowing something.
  • For Want Of A Nail : The Nail being the existence of a parallel world like Gensokyo, many things change.
    • Izuku disappears for two days when he manifest his youkai nature because Sumireko had to kidnap him to save him while she made a fix that allowed Izuku to live in the Outside world. Which makes him lie about his circumstances to Tsukauchi, who suspects Izuku had contacted All for One. So he is under surveillance by the U.A staff and All Might decides not to give him One for All.
    • Mineta died the same day of the entrance exam.
    • Reiko is in 1A, Shinso is in 1B.
    • In the USJ incident, instead of the Nomu anti-All Might, the league brings Yuugen Magan. Wich means That Nomu is still a treath.
    • Uraraka accidentally embedded a shard of Yuugen Magan in the ball of her foot, making her dream about Gensokyo, and being attacked by a werewolf in her dreams, she became a werewolf in the night of the fight against Stain.
    • Because of certain Touhou character, the tournament part of the sports festival is different, so Izuku doesn't fight Shoto, and he still refuse to use his fire.
    • For the internships Izuku goes to Kamui Woods to learn how to entrap his opponents, Tokoyami goes to a Hero Monk. Kirishima goes to Gran Torino to improve his use of One for All.
    • Nezu changed the midterms final exams to study how a normal pro hero would gauge against a youkai, and to experiment with possible ways of face them
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Izuku is half Tanuki.
  • How Dad Met Mom: After the entrance exam, Izuku “Dad” tells him his story, including how he met Inko.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Izuku Ability may be being The Transmogrifier, very versatile, supernatural and without a limit of use unlike a Quirk, but it takes a while to learn to use it at a good speed, transforming grade, reach, etc. Heck he doesn't even know what is Ability really is. And it takes practice and advice from older youkai to learn to use it.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Every chapter is named after a song from Touhou Project.
  • Kidnapped by an Ally: After the slime villain, Izuku started to develop his youkai nature and he passed out before All Might could find him and offer him One for All, Sumireko had to basically kidnap Izuku and keep him in a special house for almost two days while she made a fix for him to be able to live outside of Gensokyo Later Izuku had to kidnap an unconscious Ochako from an hospital and take her to Gensokyo before she completely became a werewolf and died for lack of belief.
  • Killed Off for Real: Mineta was thrown to the wolves, literally, Ragdoll died at the hands of Elis, Sariel killed Death Arms.
  • Kryptonite Factor: For Youkai, religious faith is a mayor weakness, Youkai are the embodiment of the fear of the unknown, the idea that the supernatural will hurt people, religious faith is the opposite, the idea that the supernatural will help people.
  • Magic Enhancement: Izuku learns from Byakuren to use the fear and surprise that he absorbs for physical enhancement, not at the level of One For All, but still.
    • All Might receiving a stealthy buff from Reiko was the only thing that allowed him to hurt Yuugen Magan and even then only after Izuku and Kirishima severely damage one of her eyes.
  • Mundane Utility: Izuku Ability of transforming things is very convenient to eat what he likes, create display cases for his collection, changing his clothes to the situation, etc.
    • Increasing his senses with fear or surprise makes the food taste better.
  • Trickster Mentor: Yukari seems to be this, but then again who knows?
  • Mr. Exposition: Mamizou as the main mentor to Izuku explain a lot of the setting in Gensokyo, altough Sumireko, Yukari and others also count.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: The youkai are practically immune to any and all kinds of attacks that are not magical, not charged with religious faith, or from another youkai.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Nue may be a ageless youkai and a master of illusions who almost nobody knows her true form, but she will never live it down that time that a human archer defeated her, Mamizou is always willing to bring that up for a laugh. but at least Nue can return the favor.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: If someone is acting notably different at how he or she acted in canon, there is a reason for that.
    • Uraraka is thinking on spending more tan she needs? Mina inviting everyone to Karaoke for celebrating the dorms? Momo making their matryoshka dolls out of gold and silver? a Pestilence Goddess did it.
  • Outside-Context Problem: For the character of My Hero Academia, everything supernatural qualify, they just don´t have the means to deal with magic, youkai, Abilities, etc. at the beginning at least.
  • Permissive Parents: Izuku “aunt and dad” had no problem in him kidnapping someone from an hospital, and even helped him, of course with them being youkai messing with humans is expected.
  • Reality Warper: Yukari Yakumo, Ran Yakumo.
    • Downplayed example later with Izuku when he realized that is Ability is the Manipulation of Change but he still has to learn how to manipulate every change, is not the same changing is location that changing a leaf in a weapon, or changing the duration of the time that All Might can be in Buff mode.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Midoriya Hisashi is a human alias of Futatsuiwa Mamizou, so she is the ”father” of Izuku.
  • Resurrective Immortality: The fairies work like this: As embodiments of nature, they are reborn immediately whenever they die, and everyone that has drunk the Hourai Elixir has the very concept of death removed from their being.
  • Semantic Superpower: Some Touhou characters have Abilities like this, which makes them absurdly powerful.
    • Yukari and Ran can manipulate boundaries, making them Reality Warpers.
    • Reisen can manipulate waves, sound, electromagnetic, mental waves, etc.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Mamizou and Nue.
  • Shock and Awe: Yuugen Magan is made of this. With Weather Manipulation as a bonus.
  • Squee: Uraraka has this reaction when meeting Princes Kaguya. Her favorite character ever.
  • Super-Empowering: Nue gives some Seeds of Unknown Form to Izuku when he plans to kidnap Uraraka from a hospital to save her before she became a full youkai. Sariel gives his blessing to Stain, which allows him to heal when he consume blood to the point of regenerating his nose, and to the members of the Church of the Winged Void, Sariel own personal cult and source of belief.
  • Tanuki: Mamizou is one, altough female, Izuku is half tanuki.
