Furin High School

First Years

    Haruka Sakura

Voiced by: Yūma Uchida (Japanese), Austin Tindle (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haruka_sakura.png

Member of Bofurin's Vaisravana Unit as well as the first year Grade Captain. Constantly judged by his physical appearance, Sakura adopts a delinquent persona that others have projected onto him and moves to Makochi to attend Furin High, an infamously rough school, and fight his way to the top.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Before he moved to Makochi town, he was shunned and hated by the people around him because of his unusual hair and eye colors.
  • Appearance Angst: He hates his half-black, half-white hair and heterochromia because people treated him like a freak for his appearance. In fact, he's weirded out when no one in Makochi town is bothered by the way he looks.
  • Duality Motif: His hair is black at the right side and white at the left side. He also has heterochromia; right eye is gray and left eye is yellow. This represents his dual moods as a Tsundere.
  • Does Not Like Spam: He doesn't like eating vegetables.
  • Freakiness Shame: People usually mock him for his half-black, half-white hair and heterochromia. He's very confused when Kotoha not only doesn't mind his unusual appearance, but says his golden eye looks pretty.
  • Friendless Background: He never had friends prior to coming to Makochi town, having been ostracized because of his odd hair and eye colors.
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Haruka" is typically a girl's name. It doesn't help his surname, Sakura, also sounds feminine.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's abrasive, gets annoyed easily, and usually only thinks about fighting. He also always goes out of his way to protect and help those around him.
  • Mistaken for Dyed: People usually think the white side of his hair is dyed, but that's his natural hair color.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name Haruka means "distant", representing his past being singled out and obstracized due to being different from his peers.
  • She-Fu: Rare Male Example. As he isn't particularly tall and only slightly more muscular than he looks, he usually mixes acrobatics and/or gymnastics to maintain momentum in battle against larger and/or more numerous opponents.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: He pretends to be unfriendly and irritable because he isn't used to people being nice to him after he was treated like a social pariah at his previous town. Deep down, he has always yearned to be accepted and appreciated, which he's finally getting now from the kindhearted Makochi residents.
  • Tsundere: Harsh type. Haruka tries to act like a tough guy, but he's always caught off guard by the kindness the Makochi residents shower him with, regularly blushing red like a tomato, all while futilely trying to deny it whenever he does something nice for them.

    Akihiko Nirei

Voiced by: Shoya Chiba (Japanese), Bryson Baugus (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akihiko_nirei.png

Haruka's right hand-man. Although he's not very strong, he has a lot of information about delinquent students from various schools.

  • Cowardly Sidekick: To Haruka. Akihiko isn't a fighter and usually cowers in fear whenever Haruka and his other classmates fight.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: After his debut, he stops pinning back his bangs and wearing shades, signalling him no longer hiding who he really is: a weak boy with no fighting skills.
  • Non-Action Guy: Unlike the rest of Bofurin, Nirei himself isn't much of a fighter—something that he acknowledges from the get-go. However, his ability to quickly memorize a lot of information and maintain a large repository of data about other fighters comes in handy.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: His role is mainly being comic relief because of his easily scared reactions and love for gathering information on his school's fighters.

    Kyotaro Sugishita

Voiced by: Kōki Uchiyama (Japanese), Orion Pitts (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kyotaro_sugishita.png

Hajime's devoted lackey.

  • Barbarian Long Hair: His long hair gives him a wild look.
  • Berserk Button:
    • He won't tolerate Haruka or anyone else even insinuating they can sleal Bofurin's top spot from Hajime. When he first heard Haruka say he wants to become the top dog, Sugishita immediately tried to beat him up and only stopped because Hajime forbids Fuurin students from fighting each other.
    • He gets pissed at anyone who doesn't address Hajime with the "-san" honorific.
  • The Big Guy: He's one of the toughest fighters in his class and his fighting style completely focuses on brute force.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In his introduction, he attacks Haruka after hearing him say he'll become Bofurin's top dog and breaks a desk at their class when Haruka dodges. However, he immediately stops paying attention to Haruka as soon as he starts listening attentively to Hajime's live broadcast.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He worships Hajime so much, he refuses to let anyone defeat him, let alone surpass him on the top, especially Haruka.
  • Limp and Livid: He usually walks around hunched, limp-armed, making him look more threatening than his classmates.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He always has a frown.
  • The Quiet One: He rarely speaks or even says more than a few words.

    Hayato Suo

Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki (Japanese), Dallas Reid (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hayato_suo.png

One of Haruka Sakura's Vice-Captains. He is considered to be one of the strongest of the first year class.

  • Anime Chinese Girl: Male example. Normally wears a zhongshan and hanfu with his uniform, his primary fighting style incorporate Chinese martial arts, and he also has cultural understanding of the region to some extent. However, this is downplayed, as Suo is fully Japanese, and the Chinese like aspects of him are only brought up in comedic moments.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's one of the friendliest members of his class, but also one of the most dangerous and merciless against his opponents.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Doubles as Bait-and-Switch Character Intro. In his first appearance, Suo is seen standing in the corner of the class with a Reverse Armfold and neutral expression, which matches his proper and aloof image. Then the latter impression breaks in an instant when he introduces himself as Leonardo DiCaprio, showing that beneath his calm exterior lies a trickster who acts just like his age. Nirei as well notes on this duality.
  • Eyepatch of Power: He wears an eyepatch and is a formidable fighter. Claims that said eyepatch seals an acient Chinese spirit resides inside his right eye, though Nirei notes that it might be among his jokes.
  • The Gadfly: He's quite fond of making jokes to tease his classmates, especially Haruka. Towards his foes however, it becomes Passive-Aggressive Kombat.
  • The Lancer: He becomes Haruka's Vice-Captain, with his calm and laid-back personality making him the Foil to Haruka's Tsundereness.
  • Mellow Fellow: He has a very calm and laidback attitude at all times.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He rarely drops his calm smile.

    Taiga Tsugeura

Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi (Japanese), Jordan Dash Cruz (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taiga_tsugeura.png

A student obsessed with muscle training.

  • Fitness Nut: He loves working out and rarely does anything else.
  • Nice Guy: He's a cheerful and honest, and is loved by his friends.

    Mitsuki Kiryu

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Japanese), Drew Breedlove (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mitsuki_kiryu.png

A student who loves video games and plays them in his phone in his spare time. Despite his nonchalant attitude, he is considered to be one of the strongest of the first year class.

Second Years

    Ren Kaji
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ren_kaji.png

The second year Grade Captain and a member of the Vaisravana Unit.

Third Years

    Hajime Umemiya

Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura (Japanese), Aaron Campbell (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hajime_umemiya.png

The representative of Fuurin High School and the leader of Bofurin.

  • Big Brother Instinct: He considers Kotoha as his younger sister and won't forgive anyone who messes with her.
  • Big Good: Hajime is pretty much the main reason why Bofurin firmly stays a force of good, unlike other gangs, with the majority of Bofurin students seeing him as a bonafide Bunny-Ears Lawyer.
  • Caring Gardener: He likes gardening on top of the school and grows vegetables to eat them with his subordinates.
  • A Father to His Men: He sees everyone in the Bofurin as his family and looks after them like a caring older brother.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Kotoha isn't his blood relative, but he still calls her his younger sister because they grew up together.
  • No Listening Skills: Umemiya is not a very attentive listener, something that causes friction on several occasions. Not only that, he is also quick to jump to conclusions in a conversation. For example, he doesn’t listen to Hiragi warning him not to mess up his speech, nor does he listen when Hiragi tries to inform him that he and the rest of Bofurin bumped into Shishitoren—who had attacked a middle schooler—even interrupting him when he tries to say the group's name, perceiving it as Hiragi asking for shishito peppers in spite of his stomach condition. Instead, Umemiya chooses to exhibit the vegetables he cultivates and talks about how great they are, much to Hiragi's irritation.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Everyone in the Bofurin has a lot of respect and esteem for Hajime as their leader.

    Toma Hiragi

Voiced by: Ryōta Suzuki (Japanese), Nick Huber (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toma_hiragi.png

One of Bofurin's Four Heavenly Kings. He commands the Vaisravana Unit.

Shishitoren

    Choji Tomiyama

Voiced by: Kikunosuke Toya (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/choji_tomiyama.png

The leader of Shishitoren. After the Bofurin first years trespass into Shishitoren's territory to save a schoolmate, he uses it as a pretext to settle the score with Umemiya.

  • Corrupted Character Copy: Of Manjiro Sano from Tokyo Revengers. Like Sano, he is a short, fluffy-haired gang leader with Empty Eyes who tends to favor kicking the opponent in the head from the side. He even leads his crew along with a taller second-in-command who has a ponytail. However, unlike Sano he is not driven into villainy by some nebulous corrupting force and he lacks in the empathy department.
  • Cute and Psycho: In spite of his adorable appearance, he is a dangerous gang leader.
  • Driven by Envy: He's obsessed with fighting Hajime because even though they're both leaders of their respective gangs, Hajime is well-loved by his subordinates and enjoys their companionship while Choji only feels bored and lonely.
  • Empty Eyes: His eyes look blank, giving him an empty and disturbing look.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He beats up Fuurin students just to get Hajime's attention and starts pestering him for a one-on-one duel like a child annoying a playmate.

    Jo Togame

Voiced by: Yuichiro Umehara (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jo_togame.png

The second-in-command of Shishitoren. Tends to talk irritatingly slowly.

  • Cool Shades: Usually wears his signature sunglasses.
  • Do Wrong, Right: His debut has him berate one of his subordinates in this manner.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Pretends to be a Mellow Fellow at first, but is actually an act.
  • Number Two: Togame's authority over the Shishitoren gang comes second only to Choji.
  • Samurai Ponytail: His ponytail evokes this, especially along with his preferred footwear being traditional wooden sandals.

    Kota Sako

Voiced by: Chiaki Kobayashi (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kota_sako.png

A member of Shishitoren who gets involved in the fight against Bofurin to have a duel with Toma Hiragi.

Citizens of Makochi

    Kotoha Tachibana

Voiced by: Ikumi Hasegawa (Japanese), Hollis Beck (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kotoha_tachibana.png

A café owner in the district.

  • Cool Big Sis: She's like a big sister to the first-year Fuurin students, even though she's the same age as them.
  • The Gadfly: She really enjoys teasing Haruka to set off his Tsundere reactions.
  • Like Brother and Sister: She has this relationship with Hajime. They aren't related, but he considers her his younger sister because they're Childhood Friends and are close like family to each other.
  • Mistaken Age: Haruka thought she was an adult because she acts quite mature for her age, making him surprised to learn she's only sixteen like him.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Haruka mistook her for Hajime's girlfriend until both made clear their relationship is like that between siblings.
  • Protectorate: Hajime is fiercely protective of her, to the point that Toma doesn't want to let him know when Kotoha has been in danger because Hajime would go overboard trying to get payback.
  • Rescue Introduction: Haruka first meets her when he defends her from some thugs who were harassing her.
  • Supreme Chef: She's a very good cook.
  • Team Chef: She isn't a Fuurin student, but the Bofurin frequent her café and she cooks for them every day.
