    As a whole
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/starzinger_4.jpg
Left to right: Jan Kugo, Sir Jorgo, Don Hakka and Princess Aurora
  • Adaptational Name Change:
    • Son Wukong —> Jan Kugo.
    • Sha Wujing —> Sir Djorgo.
    • Zhu Bajie —> Don Hakka.
    • Tang Sangzang —> Princess Aurora.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Kugo, Hakka and Jorgo originate from Earth and have significantly darker skin than most characters. They also have Chinese-style names.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Kugo is red, Jorgo is blue, Hakka is green and Aurora is pink. Their battle suits and civilian outfits are these respective colours.
  • Expy: Of the characters from Journey to the West. Jan Kugo is based on Son Wukong, Sir Djorgo is based on Sha Wujing, Don Hakka is based on Zhu Bajie and Princess Aurora is based on Tang Sangzang. Princess Aurora is also reminscient of a certain Disney Princess.
  • Fat and Skinny: Jorgo is skinny and Hakka is rotund, with the muscular Kugo in the middle.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Yes, Kugo, Jorgo and Hakka are all criminals, but there were extenuating circumstances that led them to their fates, and as flawed as they are, they have standards when it comes to villainy and oppose the Space Monsters for their tyranny.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Aurora and Kugo frequently argue on their methods on how to handle conflict - Kugo is quick to use his fists, but Aurora hates violence, and makes Kugo swear he'll be peaceful in their mission. Kugo initially writes her off as a soppy, idiotic Wide-Eyed Idealist, but he later grows to care for her and see why she loves the world and loves peace.
    Jan Kugo

Jan Kugo (ジャン・クーゴ)

Voiced by: Hiroya Ishimaru (Japanese), Tomas Bolme (Swedish), Jesús Barrero (Latin American Spanish)

  • Bloodbath Villain Origin: By the start of the story, Kugo was imprisoned for going on a rampage that exterminated the military.
  • Byronic Hero: Despises Dr. Kitty and in the first episode, is so enraged that he can't kill people during his mission, he actually leaves. He later comes back when he realizes that deep down, he has a fondness for Princess Aurora.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Jan Kugo grew up without a family, being on orphan and left to fend for himself from a young age. Abandoned at a junkyard, he knew that his dream of becoming a space pilot would be very difficult to fulfill as he came from a lower-class background. One day he volunteered for a scientific experiment led by Professor Dodge, who desired to create a powerful cyborg. It was successful, but his inability to control his temper caused Kugo to use his power to take out . He was subsequently imprisoned after massacring his former comrades at the military.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • He became Jesse Dart in the American dub.
    • He was Jan Cogo in the Swedish dub.
  • Frame-Up: ex-Jerkass Jan Kogo is framed by some villains with time-freezing powers for destroying a spaceship where a bunch of girls were escaping from their doomed planet. It almost works, but Kogo's companion Djorgo realizes that Kogo would NOT fall that low and decides to investigate... Turns out it was a demon lord who happened to get lucky, possessing a high-level general.
  • Hot-Blooded: He has a short temper, refuses to take orders from his superiors abecause they clash with his own ideals, defies the mission's objectives to do his own thing (arguing with anyone who dares call him out).
  • Monkey King Lite: Brash and hotheaded, Kugo was initially punished for his arrogance (though by being demoted to menial tasks rather than imprisoned), and fought with a powerful staff that could change, shoot lasers, and separate into halves. He also wore a circlet that could constrict should his charge, Princess Aurora, need to discipline him. In addition, his other companions - Sir Djorgo/Arimos and Don Hakka/Porkos - were clear standins for Sha Wujing and Zha Bajie, while Aurora was an obvious Tang Sanzang. (The westernized version based their names on The Three Musketeers instead.)
  • Red Is Violent: He is colour coded as red, and amongst one of the most violent cyborgs in history.
    Princess Aurora

Princess Aurora (オーロラ姫)

Voiced by: Kazuko Sugiyama (Japanese), Maru Guzmán (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aurora_9.png
  • Action Girl: She's a gunslinger and was trained by Dr. Kitty on how to wield weapons and takes on Prince Gaima on her own
  • All-Loving Hero: Princess Aurora loves the universe, loves her adoptive mother Dr. Kitty, loves the friends she makes on every planet and fights for the weak based on her sense of justice.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Aurora is gorgeous and kind, and innocent to the core.
Bellamis: "You are beautiful and kind. However, your kindness can be fatal."
  • Damsel in Distress: While Aurora is an Action Girl most of the time, she's often kidnapped, imprisoned and almost killed on foreign planets. Most of the time, it could be avoided too - she can also be too eager and trusting for her own good.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Aurora is a blonde and willingly took up the mission to defend space because she wanted to protect the inhabitants of the galaxy, including the planet Earth, that provided her refuge after the Moon fell.
  • Human Aliens: She's actually a lunarian. but when the Moon was destroyed by a Space Monster she defected to Earth.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Why Aurora was chosen to take the mission, according to Dr. Kitty.
Dr. Kitty: “We need someone who has the strong power of goodness to fight this evil. Someone who is the ability to better utilize their senses to read and use auras. Someone with the courage and intelligence to handle such an important mission. I know of only one person who has the qualities and abilities required to cope with this task. You Aurora, you, are the chosen one. You are the one who will save us from this evil.”''
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: She's a Girly Girl to the T, and her hair nearly reaches her knees.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Guess what colour Princess Aurora's dress, space suit and accessories all are?
  • Princess Classic: She's an All-Loving Hero who's willing to risk her life for the safety of her people and the universe.
    Sir Djorgo

Sir Djorgo (サー・ジョーゴ)

Voiced by: Kei Tomiyama (Japanese), Edgar Wald (Latin American Spanish)

  • Dub Name Change: He became Arimos in the American dub.
  • An Ice Person: His weapon is a trident that can trap enemies in ice, apart from blasting lasers.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Djorgo, Jorgo or Jogo?
  • Nice Guy: He's a pleasant guy, very kind, and often the mediator between Aurora and Kugo.
  • The Smart Guy: He operates a mini super-computer (that looks like a calculator) that provides the Queen Cosmos crew important information about their opponents.
    Don Hakka

Don Hakka (ドン・ハッカ)

Voiced by: Kousei Tomita (Japanese), Roberto Alexander (Latin American Spanish)

  • Animal Motifs: Pigs. He is based on Zhu Bajie, a pig demon, from the original novel, will eat anything and is uncaring of the filth caused by his excessive eating.
  • Big Eater: He gnaws on a chicken bone in his first appearance, establishing his carefreeness compared to the serious Kugo.
  • Dub Name Change: He became Porkus in the American dub.
  • Finger Firearms: A variant - he can shoot missiles from the toes of his body suit.
  • Friend to All Children: Hakka loves children (and is a bit of a manchild himself), to the point that when he finds out that the Kingdom of Topaznia has been deceiving it's schoolchildren, he declares that This Is Unforgivable!.
Hakka: You deceived me, and even innocent children...I can't forgive this!
  • Gonk: Kugo and Jorgo are drawn rather normally (even if the latter's design is a bit non standardly cartoonish), but Hakka is an unflattering, fat and ugly, with buck teeth.

Villains

    As a whole
  • Adaptational Name Change:
    • Bull Demon King —> King Gyamu.
    • Prince Iron Fan —> Queen Lacets.
    • Red Boy —> Prince Gaima.
    • King of Gold Horn and King of Silver Horn —> Gingin Man & Kinkin Man.
  • Aliens Are Bastards:
    • While Gyamu seems to love Lacets, she views him as a burden and a bumbling fool, eventually deciding to dispose of him to bolster her own power.
    • Gaima is a cold-hearted Evil Prince who's obsessed with military conquests. When his father dies, Gaima seeks to avenge him not because of love, but because he considers it an insult to his honour.
    • Demon King Golga and his bloodline inflict Mind Control on various planets, enslave villagers, send monsters to vulnerable planets, and nearly destroy the entire solar system, because he's a power-hungry maniac that would rather destroy anything than have it live out of his control.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: Despite being a Royal Family, they only view each other through the lens of power and political goals - Gyamu's death is treated more as a blow to their familial honour rather than a loss of a loved one, and Gaima is expected to be a loyal soldier and put his life on the line for their goal. None of them seem to genuinely like each other and only remain a unit out of necessity - and when Lacets decides that Gyuma is too weak, she kills him.
  • Chess Motifs:
    • Gyamu is the King, a figurehead who can't do much in spite of his title.
    • Lacets is the all-powerful Queen who does whatever she pleases.
    • Gaima is the bishop who's always chasing the heroes no matter what direction they are.
    • Bellamis is the stoic, blunt rook, who adheres only to her strict moral code.
  • Expy: Like the heroes, they're based on characters from Journey to the West. King Gyuma is the Bull Demon King, Prince Gaima is his son, Red Boy, Queen Lacets is Princess Iron Fan, and Ginginman and Kinkinman are based on the King of Gold Horn & King of Silver Horn respectively. The only significant character that lacks a book counterpart is Bellamis.
  • Horned Humanoid: As a Mythology Gag to their book counterparts who were cows and bulls, the Space Monster Royal Family have bovine-like horns.
  • Planet Baron: Gyuma, his wife Rasetsu, Ginginman, and Kinkinman have planets named after them and govern them according to their own interests. Gorga also controls Pluto.
    King Gyamu

King Gyamu (キングギューマ)

Voiced by: Takashi Tanaka

  • Et Tu, Brute?: He is unceremoniously killed by Queen Lacets' rebellion, the woman revealing that she was merely using him for her own purposes.
  • Galactic Conquerer: His goal is to dominate the world, and he proclaims himself the King of the Galaxy. He commands the Gilara military fleet to take down the Queen Cosmos Crew, who are liberating planets from his control.
    Queen Lacets

Queen Lacets (クイーンラセツ)

Voiced by: -

  • Lady Macbeth: Subverted, as while she's Gyamu's scheming wife, she exceeds him in authority and forces him to conform to her whims.
  • Malicious Slander: Queen Lacets massacres Bellamis' men and pins the blame on Kugo for it. Bellamis, who actually cares for her men, is enraged and spars with Kugo, to her pleasure.
  • More Deadly Than the Male: Gyamu is a buffoon who's military leadership is passable at best, while the Queen is the one who raised Bellamis and Gaima to be strong, dedicated warriors and thinks critically.
  • Parental Substitute: She looked after Bellamis after her parents died. This is far from a Pet the Dog moment as her true intentions were to manipulate her using their mother-daughter like bond.
    Prince Gaima

Prince Gaima (プリンスガイマ)

Voiced by: Keiichi Noda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/starzinger_1.jpg
  • Alien Prince: He is the son of King Gyamu and Queen Lacets, and the youngest of the Space Monster bloodline.
  • Evil Redhead: Prince Gaima has fire-red hair, and serves his abhorrent father. He views Aurora as an Arch-Enemy, and comes close to ending her when she's separated from the others and left at his mercy. A bit of a Genius Bonus for those who read the original book - his name is Red Child there.
  • Fiery Redhead: He has long red hair that almost reaches to his feet, and is a cruel sadist that wishes to maintain the Space Monster's destabilization of the galaxy.
  • Warrior Prince: After the death of his father, Gaima succeeds Gyuma as the leader of the Gyuma corps, personally duels with Kugo, and takes it on himself to crush Aurora and end her mission for good.
  • You Killed My Father: After Gyuma's death, he's succeeded by Prince Gaima, who takes his death as a personal humiliation and wants to reclaim his honour by killing the Queen Cosmos Crew.
    Bellamis

Bellamis (ベラミス)

Voiced by: Noriko Ohara

  • Affably Evil: Bellamis is a Soft-Spoken Sadist who even compliments Aurora for her beauty and grace, but reminds her that he's not on her side and intends to kill her as per Queen Lacet's orders.
  • Anti-Villain: Bellamis volunteered to become a cyborg to defend her home planet Gladius, and after she learns of the galaxy energy, she decides her new goal is to create a safehaven for displaced refugees like herself. Bellamis is only on the bad guy's side because of Queen Lacet's manipulation, who raised her after her parents were killed.
  • Heel–Face Turn: It takes a lot of hammering into her head (and Gyamu and Lacet's death) for Bellamis that the Space Monster military were evil all along, and Gaima is a self-serving bastard who doesn't care about people like her. In the end, she sacrifices herself to kill Gaima after befriending the Queen Cosmos Crew.
  • Lady That Looks Like A Dude: With her androgynous name and appearance, streak for violence and lack of Tertiary Sexual Characteristics, it's very easy to confuse Bellamis for a boy.
  • Worthy Opponent: Kugo deems Bellamis as one, admiring how she's the most honourable of any alien he's ever fought, in a stark contrast to King Gyamu and his family.
Kugo, episode 47: You're a wonderful opponent. You're strong, cool and even more beautiful!
    Ginginman and Kinkinman

Ginginman and Kinkinman

Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata (both)

  • Combining Mecha: Ginginman and Kinginman each pilot the "Ginder" and "Kinder" robots respectively - that when combined, form the Humongous Mecha Kinginder.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Both are Blood Knights that pillage and oppress as they please, but Kinkinman is intelligent enough to realize that fighting a super-powered Jorgo is a bad idea and tries to flee. Ginginman refuses to take his warning and perishes at his hand.
    Golga

Golga

Voiced by: -

  • Big Bad: Golga is responsible for the breaking of Planet Pluto and when the Queen Cosmos Crew defeat Gyamu, he ramps up all the chaos caused - diseases, star death and natural disasters increase en masse.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Golga is a demon lord, and the ancestor of King Gyuma and the Space Monster family. He has been sucking out the energy of the cosmos energy for years and manipulates the forces of nature to do his bidding.

Other

    Andra
An alien from Planet Goa.
