Protagonist

    Player Character
The playable character. A socially anxious sweetheart who has moved into their cousin Jesse's old apartment over the summer.Said cousin soon tasks them with clearing the local "dunjs", in order to work on their confidence and meet new people.
  • Badass Adorable: If you play them as mostly shy and withdrawn, they are this, seeing as their shyness doesn't keep them from venturing into dunjs and hacking monsters to pieces.
  • Badass Normal: The MC is a wielder, meaning unlike most of the population, they are unable to transform into a weapon. They can however, as their name suggests, wield weapons with extreme skill and lethality.
  • Character Customization: The character can look however the player wants them to look like. Hair, clothes, skin-tone, gender, nothing about them is set in stone.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: It's up to you what your character's name is.
  • Informed Flaw: The MC is repeatedly stated to be very timid and somewhat of a wallflower. However, some of the dialogue options make them come across more like a Lovable Sex Maniac who's not at all shy about what (or who) they want. And even the less bold ones don't sound especially timid or anxious.
  • No Social Skills: The main reason they came to Verona Beach. They suffer from crippling social anxiety and the mere mention of things like dates can make them hyper-ventilate. Growing out of this is a key-part of their character-arc.

Weapons

    Isaac

Isaac the Estoc

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_isaac.PNG
The sharpest dresser
Voiced by: Justice Washington
A charming and elegant financier. He's the one who introduces the player to dunjs.
  • Abusive Parents: His father Vincent is overly controlling of him and has no respect for his goals and dreams. Isaac even remembers a time when he lashed out against his father and came out of it with a scar, though he insists the injury-part was an accident.
  • Hot Teacher: He's the one who advises you on dunjs, how to traverse them and how to properly wield a weapon, specifically a fencing weapon. And he's a pretty good-looking guy with a smooth, deep voice.
  • Nice Guy: Isaac is ridiculously kind and forthcoming. He goes out of his way to teach the MC fencing, never raises his voice or shows more than mild displeasure if they say or do something he disagrees with and is incredibly polite to everybody he meets.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite being a gentleman through and through, Isaac is still somewhat miffed when Sunder completely ignores him in order to get his flirt on with the MC.
  • Royal Rapier: He is a rich, poised man and his weapon form is an estoc.

    Pocket

Pocket the Brass Knuckles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_pocket.PNG
Loves cat naps
Voiced by: Edith Cardinal
A small cat who loves to sunbathe.
  • Author Appeal: Word of God has it that his inclusion was inspired by the fact that many members of the dev team said they'd rather cuddle on the couch with their cat of an evening than go out on dates.
  • Cats Are Magic: Literally in Pocket's case, as he can transform into a weapon. Completing his route also leads your character on a vision quest with him to the magical land of the cats.
  • Crossdressing Voices: Pocket is consistently referred to as being male, and his voice actor is a woman. Of course, of more significance is the fact that Pocket is a cat and his voice actor is a human.
  • The Not-Love Interest: He has his own story route, but due to the fact that he's literally a cat and you're a human it's not a romance route. You can declare your love to him in the final "date" event, but even that is (presumably) platonic.
  • Talking Animal: Averted despite the low-fantasy setting. He's just an ordinary cat (albeit one that can transform into brass knuckles) that you strike up a friendship with. His "spoken dialogue" is made up solely of meows, and the text messages you receive during his route are sent from his owner.

    Rowan

Rowan the Scythe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_rowan.PNG
Reaping what they sow
Voiced by: Catty Donnely
A mysterious occult enthusiast with a talking bird familiar.
  • Civilized Animal: Crowley can talk somewhat and helps out Rowan when conversing with the MC.
  • Expy: Designed by Hatoful Boyfriend's creator Moa and Rowan feels like a more measured Anghel, in some regards. Their character arc of dealing with grief and the loss of a parental figure also brings to mind Ryouta's route.
  • Mystical White Hair: Their hair is completely white and they are a mysterious individual who can transform into a Sinister Scythe and is very interested in the arcane.
  • Sinister Scythe: Their weapon-form is a jagged scythe. Subverted in that Rowan themselves isn't really all that sinister.

    Sawyer

Sawyer the Glaive

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_sawyer.PNG
Awkward in the wrong hands
Voiced by: Anjali Kunapaneni
A student at the local university who's struggling to get a grip on life in general and recently came out as non-binary.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Is awkward, shy, and clumsy. It's very endearing though.
  • Lethal Chef: They reduce an egg into a lump of coal while attempting to hard boil it, seem to want to add blueberries to absolutely every recipe no matter how inappropriate, and used cough syrup as a soup base. The latter, however, knocks the MC out long enough to help them recover from exhaustion.

    Seven

Seven the Lasersaber

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_seven.PNG
Hard to get a handle on him
Voiced by: Brian Long
A K-Pop idol with a love for horror movies who came to Verona Beach for a break from his celebrity-life.
  • Always Someone Better: His relationship with Sungwoo is about how he always gets overshadowed by him. Even when he runs into a Blade Generation stan, she only cares about Seven in the hopes that he can give her letter to Sungwoo.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He's the maknae of his idol group, meaning he's the youngest member. His company actively tries to bank on this and even forces him to keep his identity as a weapon secret for fear that it might make him less cute.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: He suffers from chronic depression and is fairly gloomy, but the protagonist's patience helps him find stability.
  • Genre Shift: While the other love interests transform into fairly standard fantasy-weaponry like swords or glaives, Seven's weapon-form seems like something straight out of a sci-fi movie.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Downplayed, but he'd rather watch a horror film than go to a club on a date. Furthermore he definitely seems to enjoy the gory parts of the movies the most, although mainly to make fun of how silly they are.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He's the only love interest whose presumed legal or preferred name is never given, though it's possible he does actually like to go by his Stage Name socially as well.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: He's a young adult as opposed to a teen, but Seven has a tendency to "disappear into his phone" the second the MC stops engaging with him, even if there are other people around to interact with. It's his way of dealing with his massive social anxiety.
  • Shock and Awe: His attacks rely on generating electricity.
  • Slave to PR: Downplayed, but he doesn't go around telling everybody he's a weapon. His company fears it will mess with his "adorable maknae"-image.
  • Stage Name: Seven is most definitely not his given name, and it's later revealed that he opts to perform under an alias that's an English noun mainly because it sounds cool. (And also, possibly, as a nod to the fact that he lived in the US for part of his early childhood before his family moved back to South Korea.)

    Sunder

Sunder the Talwar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_sunder.PNG
Worried he's becoming an antique
Voiced by: SungWon Cho
A flirty goth and co-owner of the nightclub La Rosa.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: His route is entirely built on this, with him being established as flirty and mischievous right the first time you meet him. Several characters, including his best friend, also worry about how he'll treat you, with some even warning you away from him.
  • The Casanova: Sunder is a flirt through and through and it's made clear from the get-go that you're not his first conquest.
  • Dark Secret: He's a vampire who regularly feeds on his club's patrons. He hasn't ever actually killed anyone though and even pays for their hospital visits with his own tab.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Once you free him from the safe, he promptly starts to flirt with you, completely ignoring Isaac and gives you his number so he can invite you to his club later on.
  • Hellbent For Leather: Wears a black leather jacket that exposes his abs, as well as leather pants.
  • Hidden Depths: As vain and self-absorbed as he can be, he turned down a career as a singer, because he found he didn't like being stared at. He also prefers intimacy instead of shallow relationships.
  • Insistent Terminology: Downplayed. He'll get playfully offended if you call him a sabre instead of a talwar, insisting that the two are completely different.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He walks around in an open leather jacket and without a shirt on, allowing the viewer to slobber over his abs whenever he's on-screen. Some scenes even have him take the jacket off completely, showing off his broad shoulders and muscular arms.
  • Must Be Invited: If you take him home, the narration points out that he waits politely in the hallway until you're ready to invite him in. This is a hint that he's a vampire.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: At the fourth date in his route, he confesses to you that him and Mandy are vampires. His fifth date also reveals he ticks off some of the classic boxes, like being weak to sunlight, churches and garlic.
  • Perma-Stubble: As part of his rugged rogue appearance, he has a permanent peach-fuzz.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's actually over 200 years old, courtesy of being an undying vampire.
  • Something about a Rose: When feeling especially romantic, a rose will suddenly appear in his mouth. The gift he likes best is (surprise, surprise) a rose. He also frequently uses rose-emojis in his text-messages, which the player can do right back to him if they choose.

    Valeria

Valeria the Dagger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_valeria.PNG
Tired of backstabs
Voiced by: Fryda Wolff
A free-spirited painter who came to Verona Beach for a fresh start.
  • Confusion Fu: Rolling around while wielding her confuses enemies.
  • Critical Hit Class: Naturally for a dagger, she excels at getting critical hits. Even moreso once she's reached a high enough rank so that all confused enemies get guaranteed crits.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Very wary of the player when they first meet, which makes sense given she was abducted and chipped. Though, she very quickly warms up when she realizes they aren't a threat.
  • Gay Option: If the player is female, she is this.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name could be a reference to valyrian steel, a material in A Song of Ice and Fire used to make especially sharp blades that will never need honing.
  • Polyamory: She used to be in a relationship with a friend of hers and his sister. It apparently went pretty well for a time.
  • Starving Artist: She doesn't have much money, but what she does have is a passion for arts, painting especially. However, she doesn't really care about making a profit, just about creating. This was the reason why her previous relationship fell apart, as her girlfriend wanted fame from her artistry, whereas Valeria just wanted to create for creation's sake.

    Jonah

Jonah the Axe

Voiced by: Jordan DiSorbo
Jesse's ex-boyfriend who he tries to set you up on a date with. You do actually hit it off, but it turns out he's leaving town for the rest of the summer. With the arrival of the Secret Weapons DLC, however, he'll text you to say that he unexpectedly returned early, allowing you to begin his route.
  • Amicable Exes: He and Jesse are clearly good friends, with Jesse even setting Jonah up with his beloved cousin the MC.
  • Badass Pacifist: Jonah abhors violence, but since he can shapeshift into a Viking axe means that he's more than able to scare the crap out of people — whether he means to or not.
  • Blessed with Suck: As a Pacifist, Jonah expresses the repeated wish that he hadn't been born with a weapon form, let alone an intimidating one.
  • Gentle Giant: Throughout his route, his main struggle is the fact that he can't get a job that doesn't require him to use his weapon form, and is saddened that the skills he holds in his human form aren't of interest to most employers. Even in his human form he's big and burly, but quite sensitive and reserved.

    Leah

Leah the Hammer

Voiced by: Judy Barbosa
Leah is the second dateable character added in the Secret Weapons DLC. She's a champion figure skater who is quite formidable in weapon form despite her petite exterior.
  • Career-Ending Injury: She was a champion figure skater before suffering one of these. Now she splits her time between coaching and designing uniforms, with the main story of her route being her trying to decide whether to stick with what she knows or pivot full-time into fashion.
  • Gay Option: Like Valeria, she's one of a minority of female love interests in the game, making her this for a female MC. Her addition means that there's no longer only a single female romance option, though.
  • Lighter and Softer: Leah is one of the less troubled love interests in the game, being up-front from fairly early on about the fact that her main conflict in life right now is where to go with her career. She'll usually just open up to the MC directly if there's something on her mind, rather than running hot and cold when being distracted by her problems, resulting in a route that has considerably less tension than some of the others in the game.
  • Nice Girl: While most of the love interests are good people who genuinely come to care about the MC, Leah is one of the few who is unfailingly kind, even if you accidentally pick bad choices on her route.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: She and her skating partner Carlos are like this. Despite the fact that he initially seems a bit jealous of the MC, it quickly becomes apparent that he's just very supportive and protective of Leah, and there's no hint of any romantic feelings on either side.

    Dr Holmes

Dr Holmes the Whip

Voiced by: Kathleen Belsten
Dr Holmes it the third dateable character added in the Secret Weapons DLC, and is also the final boss of the update's new dunj (making her so far the only dateable boss in the game). She's a professor at the local university whose sudden disappearance the MC is asked to investigate following their success at rescuing kidnapped weapon-people from the first two dunjes.
  • Dating Catwoman: The only character in the game who you can fight and date.
  • Mad Scientist: Their character design and sample voice lines in the trailer play into the Absent-Minded Professor trope, but the fact that she's a dungeon boss definitely tips her over into this territory.
  • Secret Character: Again, Zigzagged. The fact that you'd be able to date them was made extremely clear from their initial announcement. However, as a dateable boss, they function a bit differently within the game, and as such they don't count towards any achievements for hitting relationship milestones with every character (although their route still has its own achievement for maxing out at Level 6, same as everyone else).

    Spoiler Character

Masamune the Katana

A weapon created by Eric. He's made from parts of multiple other weapons and acts on his creators deepest, darkest desires.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Downplayed. He has a piece from every weapon in your arsenal worked into him, but will only use the powers of the weapon you carry when you fight him.
  • Ax-Crazy: He is pretty quick to slash at people for no reason at all and is very obviously enjoying himself when fighting and attacking others.
  • The Dragon: Seems to be this to Eric at first, being a weapon created by him and sent to spy on MC on his orders. However, his own twisted feelings of possessiveness towards the MC eventually lead him to turn on his master.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • To the weapons. Like them, he is a magical half-weapon half-human(oid) being that is deeply in love with the MC. But where the other weapons cooperate and work with you, Masamune wants to own the MC and tries to murder them when he realizes they'll never love him.
    • To Eric. Masamune's grotesque appearance and possessive toxic personality stem from Eric's own negative feelings when creating him. Unlike Eric, Masamune has no self-control or -awareness. He also doesn't hesitate to actually act on the negative feelings Eric has toward MC and their weapons.
  • Good Hurts Evil: Being kind and understanding towards Eric during the boss battle will hurt Masamune and weaken him, since it reduces the amount of negativity he can pull from Eric.
  • Green and Mean: Has green hair and a sickly green complexion and is a dangerous lunatic who's obsessed with the MC.
  • If I Can't Have You…: When he realizes MC wants to destroy him, he decides if they don't want him as a romantic partner anyway, there's no sense in them living.
  • Meaningful Name: He's likely named after Gorō Masamune, a medieval blacksmith who was known as Japan's greatest swordsmith. His weapons were often re-tooled into katanas.
  • Mirror Boss: During his second phase he will create a doppelganger of the weapon you're carrying from his body that attacks you independently from him.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: From the moment this guy first pops up you know he's bad news and should be avoided.
  • Snake People: He has reptilian eyes and draws out the 's' in his sentences and words. It serves to highlight how unnatural he is.
  • Sssssnake Talk: He tends to hiss a lot and draws out the 's' in his words.

Verona Beach

    Jesse

Cousin Jesse

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_jesse.PNG
Voiced by: Ryan Battle
The player character's cousin, who gives them his old apartment to stay in and supports them with their goal of overcoming their social anxiety.
  • Big Brother Instinct: While he respects that the MC is an adult who makes their own choices, he still keeps an eye on them from the side, in case they might need his help.
  • Big Fun: He's a chubby man who loves parties and socializing.
  • Cool Big Bro: Well, cousin, but he's significantly older than the MC and is unfailingly supportive of them and their love life. He organizes them a teacher for the dunjs and sends them on dates with different people he thinks they might like, but is more than ready to step back and let them do their own thing if they ask him to.
  • Matchmaker Failure: Other than Isaac, every date he sets you up with is a total non-starter: from Olivia (with whom the player just has no chemistry), to his own ex-boyfriend Jonah (who you actually hit it off with somewhat but who is sadly leaving town for the summer, a fact Jesse apparently hadn't checked). Regrettably, he's also responsible for introducing the MC to Eric.

    Mandy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_mandy.PNG
The co-owner of La Rosa and Sunder's best friend.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's not entirely clear if she turned Sunder with his consent or not. The fact that they were lovers for a fairly long time after points toward it being consensual, though.
  • Amicable Exes: Her and Sunder used to date, but they're still on good terms and even run a nightclub together. The only reason she might butt into his relationships is because she knows how flighty Sunder can be and would rather save his partners the heartbreak.
  • Monster Progenitor: She was the one who turned Sunder.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she might come off as antagonistic and rude at first, that's only because she's genuinely worried that Sunder will hurt MC and wants them to know what they're in for with him. Especially since she's used to Sunder using his dating partners just for food and then throwing them away. If Sunder breaks up with you, she even pays you a visit to comfort you and give you a hug, if you want it.

    Eric

Eric the Blacksmith

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd_eric.PNG
Voiced by: Alexander Gross
A hobby-blacksmith who is fascinated with regular weaponry and the MC. He's the owner of the Naked Steel.
  • The Blacksmith: He likes creating normal weapons for himself and customers. Fittingly, the Naked Steel provides crafting tools for the player. He's talented enough to create an actual living weapon from small parts.
  • Control Freak: He freely admits to hating that living weapons have minds of their own and that he's trying to create a superior weapon without a personality that only heeds his commands.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Deconstructed. Eric believes himself to be a really nice guy and expects MC to fall into his arms whenever he does something for them. Even when they didn't want him too. He also guilt-trips them every time they reject his advances and accuses them of being shallow and only going after powerful people.
  • Fantastic Racism: He seems to view weapon-people as little more than the objects they can transform into. When meeting Isaac he makes inappropriate comments about his weapon-form and completely ignores Isaac's protests about it.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After he realizes just how much he messed up with Masamune, he first tries to help MC to destroy his creation for good and after, if encouraged to do so, resolves to go to therapy to become a better person.
  • Heel Realization: Masamune's creation basically gives him a mirror to see all of his negative emotions that he's been blind to. Needless to say, he isn't happy with what kind of person he is, and after Masamune is dealt with, he decides to go to therapy to figure out how to become a better person.
  • Light Is Not Good: He's a platinum blonde wearing a white sweater and a stalker who can't take a hint. He later on turns out to be a kidnapper, too.
  • Not Good with Rejection: He dated each of the living weapons himself before the player arrived and said that each rejection felt like he was losing part of himself, which meant he felt justified in literally attacking them and stealing part of their weapon forms to create his own living weapon.
  • Psychological Projection: He does this a lot to MC, assuming because they, like him, struggle with socializing and making friends, they too dislike people who are better at those things (like the weapons).
  • Stalker with a Crush: Deconstructed. After one measly date he suddenly becomes convinced that the MC is "special" and the love of his life. He starts spamming them with texts, sends them gifts they didn't want or ask for and "coincidentally" shows up whenever they're at a social event. Even when they already have a date to said social event. Unlike more traditional Visual Novels, the game doesn't once pretend this is romantic or cute.

    Olivia
Voiced by: Marion Toro
A barista at Kicks.
  • Better as Friends: One date with the MC is enough to convince both that they're this. They spend the rest of the game as somewhat vitriolic but ultimately friendly acquaintances.
  • Foil: To Eric in some respects. She's also a Stalker with a Crush (though her target is Sungwoo rather than the player), but unlike Eric she never goes off the deep-end and has at least some limits on what she's willing to do to get close to the person she's obsessed with.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In Seven's route she keeps popping up and trying to use Seven to make contact with his band member Sungwoo. Seven is obviously not too pleased about it, but Olivia can't seem to understand how rude she's being.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Her obsession with Sungwoo definitely crosses the line at certain points, though the player and Seven can convince her to back off a bit.

    Sungwoo
Seven's bandmate.
  • Amicable Exes: Well, ex-bandmates, anyway. His relationship with Seven is never presented as anything other than purely platonic but Seven's decision to quit the band does play out a little like a long-overdue break-up, with Sungwoo being a little shocked and hurt but ultimately supporting him and wishing him well.

    Vitas Varnas
Voiced by: Vitas Varnas
The store operator at the Heart of Verona. His official artwork depicts him transforming into a Staff weapon, though as yet he's not been seen in weapon form in-game.
  • As Himself: Vitas shares his name, and his human appearance, with his voice actor.
