Multi-Session

    S-Series

Bolts

A robot in barely functioning condition, with all sorts of bits and bobs missing. That doesn't mean he's harmless, however...
  • Cast From Hitpoints: He's actually quite strong, but his sub-standard condition means he can only ever use many of the weapons attached to him once or he breaks a limb.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Years of neglect have left him more than a little loopy.
  • Flawed Prototype: Even for the discontinued S-Series robots, he's labelled as their first, and is in terrible shape. Gertrude manages to fix much of him, but can't stabilize his arm cannons, nor can she get rid of his habit of using song or movie clips as speech.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: The last thing he remembers is a scientist calling him a "Fucking bucket of bolts" prior to deactivation. He chose Bolts out of that.
  • Painting the Medium: Because Snake's mic and internet connection were cutting out constantly during the first session, he decides Bolts speaks on jittery, broken speech, sometimes reverting to a meme or a song or movie clip to make his point.

Skitter

A small, odd spider robot whose directive is to gather materials for an uncertain purpose.
  • Collector of the Strange: Skitter gathers things for analysis and storage...but because he's too small and too stupid, he largely collects things that amuse him, like wrenches, refuse...or machetes.
  • More Dakka: When he was operating a minigun on a turret, he basically sprayed bullets in a vain attempt to get the group's pursuers away from them.
  • Tranquilizer Dart: his in-body weapon.
  • Unnecessarily Creepy Robot: Because he's a spider, he skitters constantly around and drags things into dark corners for analysis and storage. Parodied, because he usually ends up being next to useless with his tiny body and the things he collects aren't anything menacing.

Maverick

A giant cyborg with crazily humanlike construction. He wields a shotgun and has no specified programming.
  • The Ace: The most outwardly useful of the S-Series.
  • BFG: The Artwork displays him as having an enormous shotgun that can tear through humans like tissue paper.
  • Drives Like Crazy: He's a fantastic driver, but given their vehicle, he can't quite keep to a normal driving style.
  • Irony: Despite being the most human looking of the group, he's easily the most robotic in personality.
  • Ridiculously Human Robots: So anatomically correct that he had to put on pants hastily when he met Gertrude the first time.

Osiris

A Guard robot with a centaur like body. He speaks as if he were in Edwardian times.
  • Knight Errant: His general characterization.
  • Put on a Bus: He (and his player) is absent from the second S-Series episode, the explanation being that he wandered off into the wilderness in search of curious and didn't return.
  • Shock and Awe: His lance has electrodes that electrify it.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Speaks in a stereotypical "heroic knight" voice.

    Da Krew
A Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader/Wrath and Glory game first ran while Monty spent time in the hospital in October 2018, which became an annual tradition under the banner of "Orktober" (until 2021, due to Games Workshop altering its intellectual property rights). A Krew of four orks run by Takahata 101, Gaijin Goomba, Edward Bosco, and Chris Zito, joined later by MontyGlu, and organized by "Kaos God" Connor. They find themselves grappling with dealing with the weak humies, the day-to-day life of Orkz in the 40k universe...and the loss of their former warboss.

The Players

Aaaaa, The Weirdboy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aaaaa_9.png
"WELL SAID, COMMISSAR"
Taka's character. Aaaaa is a Psyker with truly bizarre mutations thanks to his connection to the warp; most principally his left brain has swollen to an immense size. He's also truly batshit crazy, and that is considering the stiff competition the rest of his band gives him.
  • Body Horror: Probably the least visibly damaged of any ork in the band, but has an enormously misshapen head.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Aaaaa is nuts. And that's saying something considering what he is and who else is in his party.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In the first session he was far less odd and unhinged, which Taka attributes to not being into the character long enough.
  • From Bad to Worse: Nearly every psyker ability he uses backfires, but most hilarious example of which is when he attempts to rally the orkz in the camp himself by emulating their former warboss...and ends up depressing them all because they loved their old boss so much.
  • Lethal Joke Character: Psykers in 40k, and especially in Wrath and Glory, are very powerful, with dangerous side effects to the misuse of their powers. And Taka put that reality warping strength directly into one of the biggest nutcases in the galaxy.
  • Multiple Head Case: He has drawn a smiley face on the swollen part of his head, giving this appearance. A more literal example happens in Da Krew 3, when he accidentally creates a sentient growth named "Bbbbb".
  • Psychic Powers: As a Weirdboy, he has access to them. Also as a Weirdboy, he also tends to fail a lot of the checks that would make those abilities useful.
  • Talking to Themself: His boss pole has multiple hats on it so he can keep track of which voice is whose, though he uses the commissar painted on his misshapen head the most.
  • Your Head Asplode: His 'Eadbang ability allows him to do this to other people using his Psychic Powers. So far, he's used it to excellent effect.

Smolface:

  • Animal Companion: Smolface is Aaaaa's pet Squig.
  • Came Back Strong: Within minutes of their first appearance in Da Krew 3, Smolface is killed, then brought back...with some minor changes, such as blue feathers.

Kortag, The Painboy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kortag.png
"DON' WORRY I'LL GIT DAT PATCHED ROIGHT UP"
Gaijin's character. A damn good painboy if he ever was one, but has a rather unsettling reputation as someone more interested in "improving" his patients than just stitching them up.
  • Artificial Limbs: Has a mechanical arm loaded up with all sorts of nasty medical equipment.
  • Beyond the Impossible: His final patient was decapitated, so his solution was to build a head out of scrap parts and place the skin of his face on top of it so he wouldn't look weird. In true Ork fashion, it went off without a hitch, with the patient gaining the name "Chromedome".
Kortag: Oh boy, this one's gonna be a doozy.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He manages to do some truly miraculous things to save some of his lads in spite of being fairly goofy.
  • The Dreaded: Among his warband, Kortag's reputation for "improving" his fellow Ork means plenty of Orkz stay far clear of him.
  • Mad Doctor: In spades.
  • Only in It for the Money: While motivated by the same Blood Knight tendencies of Orkz, he loves teef more than anything.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Hits it hard when his assistant is quite literally ripped in half by Dimitri Malone in front of a roaring crowd of Chaos cultists. Kortag is bloodthirsty, but this is the first time we see him truly angry.
  • Sadist: More than the other Orks, as he delights in hacking humans to bits with his Choppa.
  • Shown Their Work: Gaijin did research on the Painboy and Orks in 40k in general to get a more accurate depiction of the kind of Ork Kortag would be, and it shows.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Has this opinion of his assistants keep trying to dissuade him from solving every problem with prosthesis and power klaws.
  • Tap on the Head: His idea of anesthetic.

Peezes, The Mekboy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pieces.png
"I ain't got no strap to put this on me back!"
Zito's character. He's a natural tinkerer who loves the cycle of lootin', tinkerin', and then lootin' some more with the stuff he tinkered and looted. He's in charge of all of the camp's gear. When the Krew gets the Krewzer, he's made the captain.
  • The Ace: By far the character with the most successful rolls and given his generally slightly more together personality he can happily help keep Da Boyz on the right track but also indulge their dumbest fantasies.
    • Extends to his work, in the finale of Da Krew 3, he managed to whip up four suits of 'Eavy Armor, the Ork equivalent of Carapace Armour, in under an hour.
  • Affably Evil: Still an Ork and still enraptured with bloodshed, but he's otherwise nice, has a sunny disposition, and is always supportive of his boyz.
  • Berserk Button: Keeps the good oils to himself, and he will NOT allow anyone else to use them.
  • Cyborg: Half of his head was replaced by a Necron's, and as such it's given him fantastic insight into mechanics.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Knows da Krew's gear inside and out.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: All of the oils he uses are in Citadel Paint pots.
  • One-Hit Polykill: Pulls off a few of these once he gets his hands on a rocket launcher.
  • The Pollyanna: Zito describes his default facial expression as "Just happy to be here"

Gronk, The Kommando

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gronk.png
"They can't see yeh if it's purple"
Bosco's character. A surly, quiet sort of Ork that enjoys attacking the filthy humies more than anything...just in a kunnin' way.
  • As You Know: Used to truly bizarre effect by explaining that if he doesn't move, humans can't see him.
  • Expy: Of NFL player Rob Gronkowski.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: As a Kommando, his ability to remain hidden is difficult to discern, as he's a 9 foot tall hulking monster and he has the propensity to paint himself the sneakiest color...Purple. To his credit, he is genuinely pretty sneaky.
  • Only Sane Man: In a way. He's far more focused than anybody else in Da Krew and is probably the most convincing of the four.
  • Pet the Dog: A weirdly dark case when he kills Barnaby, the Khornate representative. The last thing he says to him is "Blood for the Blood God", allowing Barnaby to Go Out with a Smile.
    • A more genuine one in Da Krew 3: He finds out about Mawp Bukkit's true identity, and even after having taken part of the campaign where he's been killing practically everything with a pulse, he comes to care for Mawp Bukkit, especially once he saves his life.
  • The Quiet One: Generally speaking for an Ork, anyway.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He's just as brutal as his companions, but is far more reserved and calculating about it.

Mawp Bukkit/Pvt. Jeremy Taylor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mopbukkit.png
"Uhh...Gee, I'd love to, but-"
Monty's character, introduced in Da Krew 3. They are a seen by their peers as an Ork among Orks, a brave slayer of humies, and a great jokester, despite being a tad scrawny. The truth is...a bit different.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Gives the impression that he's been having "Memory issues" to try and fob off his problems of being a bit slow on the up-take for even basic ork issues. At least some of it seems to be genuine, as they struggle to remember things like what a Space Marine or the Emperor of Mankind is.
  • Captain's Log: Is constantly updating their "Memory Journal", though nobody else either minds or notices.
  • The Noisy Straw: Is often seen drinking a Capri-Sun that he brings around in his lunchbox.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: As his character portrait shows, he's in fact just a regular human guardsmen, with a mask made out of a mop bucket and the word "ORK" painted on their chest plate. It works near-flawlessly.
  • Taking the Bullet: Takes an almost assured killing blow from Gadzookz in order to save Gronk, and only barely averts it being a Heroic Sacrifice thanks to being one under the very low Die-Number Connor needed to roll on a d100. It was so improbable he took a picture of the result to prove it. However, Mawp still loses An Arm and a Leg.

NPCs

Gadzookz Wrecksmasha

Da Krew's Warboss at the very beginning of the campaigns. Gadzookz is a poor imitator to the throne of the old warboss; an unctious bully who keeps everybody in line through fear alone.
  • Final Boss: From the moment he returns in Da Krew 3, Da Krew plot to end him for good this time, and they fight in the finale.
  • Large and in Charge: When he resumes control of the warband in Da Krew 3, he's grown ten feet taller than the next-tallest Ork.
  • Not Quite Dead: Presumed to have died in an explosion, he actually crashed onto the planet "Dave-3", and returns in Da Krew 3 to take control of the warband back.
  • 0% Approval Rating: Almost no Ork boy in the Black Crag WAAAGH!! actually likes him, and only follow him out of fear.

Chromedome

An Ork who survived decapitation thanks to the work of Kortag. After a couple of years of kicking around, he got better enough to try and rebuild the old warband and reunite Da Krew with their boys. If only Gadzookz hadn't survived as well...
  • Body Horror: To Kortag's credit, Chromedome did indeed survive his surgery, but the skin on his face grew into and around the metal, giving him kind of an engorged, bulbous head.
  • Losing Your Head: Happens twice. The first time, Kortag has to build a replacement head. Then, early into Da Krew 3, he's decapitated by Gadzookz and his body is crushed, but is still conscious as just the head Kortag made.
  • Secret-Keeper: Having taken an amnesiac Mawp Bukkit into his care during the evacuation following the old warboss' death, he's the only Ork at the start of Season 3 to know their true species.
  • So Proud of You: Kortag considers him his greatest patient. In return, for all the kindness they show to him, Chromedome considers Da Krew the perfect successors to the old warboss.

Lupus Magnus Cylon the 4th

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/da_krew_lupus.png
A Rogue Trader, who offers Da Krew their very first mission.
  • The Bus Came Back: Appears at the tail end of Da Krew 3, revealing his manipulations that led to Gadzookz's first (presumed) death, and offering medical care for Mawp.
  • The Chessmaster: Da Krew 3 reveals that he played Da Krew in order to get a shot at Gadzookz, and he shows up again right after they've finished Gadzookz off to take in Mawp, though he claims the latter isn't trying to put Da Krew in his debt.

King Gray Ham

The leader of an archaic civilization on a backwoods planet. Gadzookz sends Da Krew to conscript him and his kingdom into his army.
  • Clueless Boss: Even after Da Krew recover (and keep) all of his planet's artifacts and bring all the Orks of Dave-3 onto Da Krewser, he keeps his title of "King" and considers his new role of liaison between his people and Da Krew as an important position.
  • Expy: As the King of Dave-3 who requests Da Krew to recover a mirror, a shield, and a chest, he's one to King Graham.

Spitroast

Gadzookz's former Nob lieutenant, who left to seek his own fortune. Da Krew are offered the task to hunt him down...but they instead decide to partner with him to fight against their current boss.
  • Expy: As a gunslinger with a clipped ear who tells the townsfolk that he's got some medical know-how, he's one to Freddy Pharkas.
  • Unfortunate Names: Da Krew, upon hearing it for the first time, burst out laughing, since it's both a cooking technique and a...sexual act.

Thagarin Thunderfury

An acquaintance of Lupus Cylon's, acting as his muscle.
  • Last Episode, New Character: He isn't described until halfway through the finale of Da Krew 3, and not properly introduced until its final scene.
  • Space Marine: He's a member of the Space Wolves, part of the Death Watch Space Marines.

    Remy and the Merkz

Pardner "Dusty" Salem and Luigi, his Raptor companion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pardnerandluigi.png
Played by @Clown_depot and Luigi's vocalizations are produced by Monty.
A Ranger down on his luck and his pet Velociraptor who happens to lead his little group in trying to find work.
  • Animals Hate Him: Pardner left the farms he was from because he was terrible with animals. In fact, the only animal that actually likes him is Luigi, a Raptor he raised from birth.
  • Cowardly Lion: He's a self-admitted coward, but he'll still help his allies, no matter how he feels.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Luigi has fantastic non-combat rolls in comparison to what Pardner kept getting, and in a practice game, Luigi apparently never once missed an attack roll.
  • Furry Reminder: Can sheathe and unsheathe his claws, and spends several minutes watching them go in and out of his hand.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: His confidence in abilities and his low rolls paints him as this.
  • Only in It for the Money: When Remy meets him, he's so cash-strapped he's willing to take the job, for the pay alone. And is open about wanting to only do the bare minimum so they can get the coin.
  • Raptor Attack: Pardner's animal companion Luigi can do plenty of damage on his own, and does whenever Pardner does.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He tends to curse a lot.

Cliff

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cliff_9.png
Played by @Kuueater
A simple-minded minotaur who also happens to be a Warlock of the Great Old One.
  • The Big Guy: He's enormous, almost as tall as the Sweet Dragon's ceiling.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Instead of using his hex-weapon as a way to get away from the Wyvern that just grabbed him, he uses Suggestion to make it believe it grabbed the wrong one...leading for it to drop him carefully then carry one of the dragonborn he's facing straight off the battlefield, leading to the Dragon Cultists around it panicking and running.
  • Eldritch Abomination: His patron appears to be one of these, an entity called The Mouthless One. According to Edward in episode 103, the Mouthless One is actually an agent of Ko, the God of Secrets, and the only entity in existence that knows the names of dead gods.
  • Expy: Was created as sort of a homage to Korg from Thor: Ragnarok.
  • Horrifying the Horror: His patron speaks through his hammer, and the Green Dragon they fight at the end of the encounter is the first thing that can hear it other than Cliff, and it terrifies it.
  • Good Is Dumb: Cliff is especially dumb, and sweet as sugar.
  • I Call It "Vera": His hammer is named "Doug"...Doug happens to also be alive.

Vladimir

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vlad_5.png
Played by the legendary Alfred, AKA @PaperBoxHouse
A Tiefling Wizard who's especially interested in blood...and also in getting some extra coin.
  • Berserk Button: Dragons or Wyverns. Because they abducted his husband.
  • Expressive Hair: When pissed off, Vlad's mohawk flares up with magical power.
  • Fartillery: Uses Fart Cloud in order to escape the wrath of a Green Dragon...
  • Farts on Fire: ...And uses Fireball to blast the cloud and seriously damage it.
  • Friendly Fireproof: As an Evoker, he can make evocation spells selective in who they actually damage.
  • Hidden Depths: He's more than happy fighting the dragon cult because his husband got carried off by their Wyverns in the attack. But also as a result, he's more cautious than his compatriots because he doesn't really want to lose anyone else even slightly close to him.
  • Method Acting: Alfred actually began tearing up when Vladimir began asking about the whereabouts of his husband.
  • Playing Against Type: Vladimir is quiet, stern, erudite, and sensitive as opposed to what Alfred is typically known for.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: He goes through a list of descriptors for "bad"...That ends in "Thotticus of a dragon".

Brother 11

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brother11merkz.jpg
Played by @EGronk
Introduced for the Alivast Reclamation Forces one-offs. A Construct Paladin.
  • The Big Guy: Not as big as Cliff, but quite large regardless.
  • Made of Iron: Literally, as he's a construct. But as a Paladin, he can also take a lot of damage, including being so hardy that a dragon breaks its teeth trying to bite him.
  • Phrase Catcher: Pretty much every time he rattles off a one-liner, expect another member of the Merkz to exclaim 'Oh My God, he's so cool!'
  • The Stoic: Stays stalwart and unflappable, even in the face of an adult Gold Dragon.

     Shadow Wars

Lyric

Monty's character for the setting, a shy Tiefling Warlock with a dark past, accompanied by her familiar Fletch.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Due to the circumstances of her appearance, she doesn't hold her looks in high regards despite looking attractive by all accounts.
  • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: Turns out that smacking a Centaur's ass has the same meaning as doing it to a human.
  • The Smart Guy: She fills this roll for the group, most apparent in the 3rd session where she's the only one to realize That their informant is the only person who fits the profile of the criminal they're looking for.
  • Was Once a Man: Used to be a human girl, but her master's demonic rituals led to her becoming a Tiefling.

Maximillion "King" Kingston

Taka's character, a renowned archer, who after the death of his wife and sun spends most of his time drowning his sorrows.
  • The Alcoholic: Spends an entire evening with a keg of alcohol, and it's implied it isn't the first time this has happened.
  • Jerkass: He's incredibly boorish and obnoxious.
  • That Man Is Dead: Used to go by "Hawk", but insists that whoever that was, isn't him anymore.

Ramorn Doomrunner

Connor's Character. A proud Centaur follower of the Great flame, and one of it's most pious followers.
  • The Big Guy: His horse-half is a draft horse, as he's several inches taller than most of the characters.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: In-setting, they are treated as just as bad as werewolves due to their designation as "Beastmen".

Redwood

Gaijin's character. A World Tree Sapling (think a person sized-Ent) who is compelled by the Tree to restore natural balance in the now ravaged world.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Thinks of eating plants as barbaric and profoundly strange, but thinks eating flesh is totally cool.
  • Catchphrase: "I LIKE YA JOKE!"
  • Foil: Intentionally made as far away from Greckles as Gaijin could make him.
  • Named After Someone Famous: There was another world tree sapling that was named Redwood who once saved the world, and he has been living in his shadow for most of his life.
  • Plant People: A World Tree Sapling is essentially a person who's hair is leaves and their skin is made from bark.

    Ravenloft: Heir to the Throne

The Players

Wihakayda, The Watcher in the Woods

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_wihakayda.jpg
Played by @MarkAllenJr
The enigmatic warden of the deep, dark Svalich woods, normally wandering far away from the eyes of men. However, during her journeys through these forests of Ravenloft, she finds that a great pollution has taken hold in the rivers leading from Castle Ravenloft, and she comes across a certain Faun in the woods...
  • Berserk Button: While she won't hesitate to defend herself, she does not care for the intentional wanton killing of the forest's creatures, as Grymharl almost found out, and it's clear she did not let it go by the end of the combat.
  • Body Horror: Her body appears to be slowly rotting, with patches of flesh missing to the point where bone is visible. This is a result of the Wendigo transformation and appears to be exacerbated when she goes too long without feeding.
  • Catchphrase: She's quite fond of greeting newcomers in her forest with "You should not be here."
  • Creepy Good: An impossibly thin, tall, undead ranger who wears an elk-skull on her face, moves in an unnecessarily creepy fashion, lives in the darkest parts of Barovia's woods, but is in fact firmly on the side of good and firmly against Strahd's machinations.
  • Green Thumb: Has more control of the forest than initially appears, as part of her Primeval Guardian Conclave.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: As a Wendigo, she must consume human flesh or become even more emaciated and maddened by hunger. She usually limits her prey to humans who "break the rules" in her forest, but it can become difficult for her to control it if she goes too long between feedings.
  • Nature Spirit: Has shades of this, especially due to her Guardian Soul ability.
  • The Spook: For pretty much everyone not in the party, known only as "The Watcher in the Woods" by pretty much everyone else.
  • Was Once a Man: Wendigo in this setting are not inherently bad, but must give up most of their humanity to become one with the forest they inhabit, and are constantly fighting the urges that come with the territory.
  • Wendigo: Kapnos and Grymharl realize eventually that Wihakayda is one.
  • When Trees Attack: As a Primeval Guardian Ranger, Wihakayda can transform into a large tree-like being.

Calamity

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_calamity.jpg
Played by @CzBacklash
A Faun Monk who previously lived in a monastic order deep in the forests of the Forgotten Realms, but was kicked out for crimes she felt were just. Since then, she has been a guide through the woods, bringing adventurers, travelers and such safe passage. She was brought to Ravenloft as a bumbling researcher wanted to see the mists that were said to have a mind of their own rolled through...and deposited her into the Svalich Woods.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Averted, she tends to use a shortsword in most of her fights, except when she uses her Touch of Death ability, and then she uses it to attack, and more importantly to heal herself.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Her motivation for killing the necromancer she was ordered to guard was him plotting to turn Calamity's sister into his undead thrall.
  • The Exile: Is an outcast from her village due to slaying a necromancer she and her sister were ordered to guard.
  • Fauns and Satyrs: Her race; specifically, a Faun based on Zito's own work.
  • Flash Step: She has the ability to hide within foliage even when partly obscured, and tends to move in combat through, as Zito puts it, "Photoshop smears".
  • Foreshadowing: Unintentional. During the party's meeting with Madame Ava, she has them each draw a card from her tarokka deck and Calamity draws the Ghost card. She is the only member of the party to die.
  • Killed Off for Real: She gets killed in the final battle with Zaro. She's noticeably the first permanent PC death in the entire series.
  • Kill It with Fire: Zaro manages to One-Hit Kill her with a point-blank Fireball in the final battle.
  • Kill the Cutie: She's by far the most outgoing and peppy of the party, and is the only casualty of the campaign.
  • Life Drain: As a member of an Order of the Long Death, she can drain temporary hit points from killed creatures.
  • The Pollyanna: Is just thrilled to be on an adventure of any kind, and exists in stark contrast to the gothic horror of the setting.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Calamity is absolutely fascinated by chaos and the macabre, and claims that her sister was much more attuned to a life of order and discipline.

Corporal Grymharl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_grymharl.jpg
Played by @MontyGlu
A Minotaur Cleric of Tyr who previously was a stationed guard in Icewind Dale, who was previously defending her post from raiders in Bryn Shander when the Mists rolled in, bringing her to Ravenloft quite suddenly at a campsite. And she hates being away from her post for any reason...
  • Jerkass: She's far from a pleasant person to deal with.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: After one of Monty's cats interrupted the first session of Season 2, there's been repeated mention of Grymharl adopting a cat and keeping it in her armor in order to practice empathy.
  • Knight Templar: An absolutely terrifying version of it; completely and utterly devoted to the enforcement of the law as judge and executioner. Morever, she firmly believes that the law she follows supersedes any other law.
  • Lawful Stupid: The mere mention of lawbreaking causes her to react with a readied mace, and is within seconds of mashing Ray into paste before he manages to talk his way out of it.
  • Never My Fault: She claims that she has no qualms with the deaths she's been responsible for, and that her actions were just.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: A hallucination in the Pumpkin King's ghost town finally forces Grymharl to reconcile with her heinous actions.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Is introduced defending the gates of Bryn Shander from invaders, and killing all that try to pass...which includes a brainwashed small child.
  • Our Minotaurs Are Different: A very scary minotaur lady.
  • The Stoic: Is almost robotic in her devotion to the Bryn Shander watch, and rarely if ever shows emotion or reciprocates it.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Post-epiphany, she actively attempts to be a nicer, more "moral" person, though it sickens her to her stomach to try. She seems physically repulsed at saying "please" and "thank you", though this is largely Played for Laughs.
    • After the battle at Castle Ravenloft, she's come to adopt a cat that lives in her armor.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Forget "would", she straight up decapitates a child with her thrown hammer when she's moving a sphere of annihilation towards the Bryn Shander gates.

Raykhul "Ray" Roarrunner

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_raykhul.jpg
Played by @Theropod_art
A scoundrel, tomb raider, and thief who went into a tomb looking for their lost friend who'd gone ahead of them on a job, only to find that another treasure hunter had lured them into a trap. Just as they're about to go back to enact vengeance, Ray is suddenly swept up by a rush of mist, and deposited into a camp with an armored Minotaur...
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: His scale color is a bright green and cyan.
  • Con Artist: Has a habit of trying to start up a "Side Hustle" or two.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: After dealing with Calamity's death and the prospect of remaining stuck in Ravenloft, he spends the next week getting drunk at a tavern in Barovia.
  • Lost Lenore: He lost his boyfriend (later admitted to be husband) Gishath fairly recently, something that still aches him. Though a week later, he receives a sending from Gishath's father that Gishath has been successfully resurrected, which pulls Ray out of his funk.
  • Loveable Rogue: He's a thief and a scoundrel, but he gets on well with the rest of the party and has a generally pleasant demeanor.
  • One Last Job: Was supposed to be going on one to pay for a plot of land on an archipelago, but it ended up getting him transported to Ravenloft.
  • Proud Merchant Race: His species' schtick, even down to having the "Saurian Rules of Acquisition".
  • Smoking Is Cool: Is rarely seen without a fine cigar between his teeth.
  • Support Party Member: While he's perfectly fine at fighting for himself, his personal predilection is to stick near one of the other, much larger fighters and help them out.

Kapnos of the Embermane

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_kapnos.jpg
Played by @DistortionDevil
An Echo Knight from the sun-kissed land of Oreskos, Kapnos came to Ravenloft some time far before anyone else, and ended up in the care of Sophia Ikonios, a vampire hunter. He, along with Sophia, have been researching a way to leave Barovia.
  • Action Survivor: He had already been surviving in Barovia for roughly a month by the time the campaign begins and the rest of the party are transported there.
  • Ancient Grome: His general aesthetic.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Kapnos has trouble really prescribing to any religious beliefs due to his own cultural concerns, though he rarely ends up making too much noise over it.
  • Badass Bookworm: His introduction shows him researching the history of Barovia, and then fending off an attack from a vampire's brood.
  • Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?: Lies directly to Zaro's face, and with the exception of a hallucination encounter, has mostly gotten off scot-free.
  • Drugs Are Good: His incense burners are often compared to recreational drug use, particularly when he attempts to remove any smell of Sophia from himself and dissuade her stalkers by "hotboxing" his room at the inn.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: His signature ability, his incense burners in his mane allow him to create smoky shadow echoes that can attack for him and draw enemies away from him.
  • Nice Guy: Though not as peppy as Calamity, he's still pretty friendly and easygoing.
  • Supreme Chef: If Sophia's and the other's reactions to his cooking are anything to go by.
  • Tragic Keepsake: He keeps one of Calamity's gauntlets with the intent of returning it to her sister if he ever gets the chance.
  • Viewer Species Confusion: An in-universe example, Kapnos is a Leonin, a Canon Immigrant race to D&D, and most of the party mistakes him for a Tabaxi.

Brand

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_brand.png
Played by @SciFryTV
Introduced in the second Ravenloft campaign, Brand is a Changeling Ranger in his late 20's. He considers himself to be a "weird grey mountain Ork", having been raised by Orks in the Calderon Mountains. After getting lost in a blizzard, he finds himself trapped in Barovia a week after the events of the original campaign.
  • Armor Is Useless: His main outfit is a blue parka that's been repeatedly ripped and exposes a lot of grey skin, but he's been fine wearing it in the mountains because of his biology acclimating to cold temperatures.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's a complete fool, but he is unquestionably a fantastic marksman.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: He's...strange.
  • Interspecies Adoption: He was raised by Orks, and as he's never seen another Changeling, he believes himself to be an Ork that just has a weird innate ability.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As a Changeling, he can change his form. However, due to believing himself to be a "Weird Ork", he can only transform into Ork-ish body types.

Roval

Introduced in the third Ravenloft campaign, Roval (played by Zito) is an Elf (kinda) that serves the Raven Queen as one of her Clerics.
  • The Gadfly: He spends a lot of time trying to goad his new companions.
  • Our Elves Are Different: He's actually a Shadar-Kai, which is a shadow-touched elf perpetually between life and death.

Important NPCs

Sophia Miklos

A famous vampire hunter in Barovia, and the woman who saved Kapnos' life. She is the principal target of Zaro Von Strahdovich.
  • Big Good: The closest to it that Ravenloft allows. She faces the misbegotten spawn of Strahd and is well-known throughout the entire realm for her efforts against the inhabitants of Castle Ravenloft.
  • Damsel in Distress: She ends up in Zaro's clutches in the first season's final episode, leading to a climactic raid on his castle and battle to save her.

Madam Ava

A Vistani Fortune Teller that the party meets early in their adventure.
  • Expy: She seems to be one for Madam Eva from the original Ravenloft modules.
  • Fortune Teller: The tarot reading that she performs for the party end up Foreshadowing many key points in their adventure.
  • Magical Romani: The Vistani are a nomadic people capable of traversing the woods of Ravenloft even better than the native Wihakayda.

Zaro Von Strahdovich

Strahd in this campaign has been dead for several years, and has not even been rumored to be still alive for quite some time. However, Strahd's lineage does not end with him, and Zaro has appeared to apparently reclaim the throne of his ancestor.
  • Entitled to Have You: It appears this is his main motivation for seeking out Sophia.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first interaction with the party is him glibly remarking on their fighting skill, one-handedly shoving Grymharl away, and effectively spooking everybody with his mere presence.
  • Generation Xerox: Unfortunately for Ravenloft, Zaro is just as bad as his supposed father.
  • Hero Killer: He's responsible for the very first permanent PC death in any Unexpectables content when he incinerates Calamity.
  • Implacable Man: When he first meets Grymharl, she tried shoving him back, only for him to completely resist and shove her back five feet with a single hand.
  • It's Personal: Oddly enough, out of all of the PCs and important NPCs, he ends up having this relationship with Calamity, as he was the Necromancer that she killed when he tried to kill her sister.
  • Overlord Jr.: Though his lineage is questionable, he's willingly taken up the name and role of Strahd's successor.

Sumer

An old Kenku ally of Sophia's, suffering from years of captivity and some wounds from a fight against werewolves.
  • Not Quite Dead:
    • Sophia presumed he died in a raid against Strahd, but he claims he was merely imprisoned in the dungeons of Castle Ravenloft and was only able to escape recently. Subverted when it turns out that the real Sumer did die in the dungeons, and an impostor is using his identity.
    • In Season 2, it's played straight, as the party is unable to contact his spirit in the afterlife, his body's missing from his grave, and there's even evidence that he wasn't quite dead from the fight against Zaro in the first place.

The Pumpkin King

A ghastly figure that plays with the party's fears and sanity for his own amusement.
  • Evil Laugh: He can't help but cackle sinisterly after first making his presence known and the party takes a sanity hit.
  • Given Name Reveal: Season 2 of Ravenloft has the Pumpkin King reveal a less-formal moniker for himself: Mad Jack.
  • Pumpkin Person: The form he takes when deciding to converse directly with the party.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: His illusions are capable of making his victims feel enough pain to be at death's door, before snapping them back to reality and their previous healthy state.

The Night Reaper

An associate of the Pumpkin King, who's used as a threat if travelers aren't willing to play the King's games.
  • Dimensional Cutter: During Season 2, the party spot it outside the realm of the Pumpkin King, using its scythe in order to create spatial rifts and warp throughout Barovia.
  • Given Name Reveal: More of a Title Reveal, but the party finally learns its proper moniker during the events of Ravenloft Session 11. And then in Session 12, Jack refers to him as Zerakis.
  • Horsemen of the Apocalypse: He's described as a black-robed, scythe-wielding, intimidating horseman, clearly invoking the image of Death.

The Werewolf Alpha

The pack leader of the werewolves in the lands surrounding Castle Ravenloft, sought by the party under the pretense that he possesses an artifact required for their goals. It is soon learned that he was also a former ally of Sophia's.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: He's subjected to this in the final battle against Zaro, though he's stopped from attacking the main party by Sumer's sacrifice.
  • Given Name Reveal: He's only known as the Alpha when the party first enters his den, but Sophia addresses him as Sulumor when he helps rescue her from Zaro.
  • Going Native: It's learned, via his lack of a Barovian accent and familiarity with both Sophia and the mists, that he was originally an outsider as well.
  • Large and in Charge: His wolfman form stands at eight feet tall, larger than even Grymharl the Minotaur.

Gishath

Ray's lover.
  • Expy: Theropod, Ray's player, has admitted that Gishath was inspired by the "Gishath, Sun's Avatar" card from Magic: The Gathering.
  • The Lost Lenore: He serves as Ray's. Until Season 2, when Ray learns that Gishath's father has successfully resurrected him, renewing Ray's spirit and motivation to leave Ravenloft.
  • Relationship Reveal: He's stated to be just Ray's boyfriend in Season 1, but admitted to being his husband in Season 2.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He appears briefly in Ray's introduction, getting killed during what was supposed to be their One Last Job.

Phyllis and Conrad

A pair of low-ranked werewolves that work under Grymharl, introduced at the start of the second Ravenloft campaign.
  • Butt-Monkey: While Phyllis does fairly well in her first fight, Conrad constantly rolls too low, and the players quickly make a gag out of dunking on him.

     The Parched Sands of Ruba
A "three off" one-shot campaign running in the Unexpectables universe on consecutive Saturdays starting on July 17th. A group of adventurers in the employ of the Almon Archives set off from the town of Welldune into the mysterious Sands of Ruba to find a researcher who has gone missing at the Metikalun Ziggurat. Featuring Zoran the Bear from WarHams, Joe Fudge from Godforged, Caitlyn Elizabeth from Role With Me, and the Unexpectables' own editor (and video game reviewer), AustinEruption, with character art provided by Zoosdraws.

Miles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miles_11.png
The merchant in the sands
Austin's Character. A swarthy Tabaxi merchant-turned-treasure hunter aiming to make his next big score.
  • Intrepid Merchant: Miles has a tendency to hunt for interesting goods for his own shop during missions.
  • Noodle Incident: Miles spends most of the first day with exceptionally fluffed up fur thanks to a previous run-in with Blue Dragons.
  • Useless Useful Non-Combat Abilities: Has a +11 in Intimidate, and was only ever able to use it once at the end.

Rinoa Ahkai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rinoa.png
Ydia's wayward speaker
Caitlyn's Character. An airy, serene Centauress Cleric of the nature goddess Ydia, who seems exceptionally out of place, given where she is in the desert.
  • Butt-Monkey: She spends a lot of the campaign getting absolutely wrecked by life; failing to cook a snake, getting routinely the most amount of damage, and getting almost killed several times.
  • Fish out of Water: She's practically a Disney princess built for the forest...stuck far out in the desert.
  • Green Thumb: She has the power of the nature goddess Ydia, and thus has control over all sorts of plant life.
  • Lethal Chef: She's mostly spent her time magically conjuring food for those truly stuck out in the desert, never really thinking about whether or not the food was actually tasty. She's a bit distraught at the reality of it.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: She gets shot in the ass and takes 12 points of damage from Miles, and mostly acts no worse than if she'd been personally insulted.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Whenever the Black Chains are mentioned, she gets much quieter and dour.
  • Playing Against Type: Caitlyn built Rinoa's character specifically as a way to have a more traditionally "feminine" character, as she'd been voice acting nothing but, in her own words "tough women and dumb boys" leading up to the three-off.
  • The Pollyanna: She is almost unbelievably innocent, having a childlike quality to her at all times.

Lorn Barnes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lorne.png
The master of the arcane one minute, your grandfather the next.
Zoran's shockingly familiar character. An affable, somewhat batty old wizard searching for lost magic in the dunes of Ruba.
  • Absent-Minded Professor: Has the air of one as he bumbles about, but he is rather knowledgeable when the chips are on the table.
  • Cool Old Guy: A natural pre-requisite. He blew up a dragon prior to their adventure, and only remarked that it was a good day because of it.
  • Expy: Just Lorne from WarHams, but significantly less insane.
  • Lighter and Softer: Compared to Lorne in WarHams, he's practically an angel.
  • Wizard Classic: Staff, beard, and hat. He checks all the marks.

Mantigore

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mantigore.png
The Ex-Gladiator
Joe_Fudge's character. A massive Goliath in gladiatorial gear who is every bit as gruff as he looks.
  • Battle Trophy: Mantigore pock-marks his body with bits of successful kills, such as manticore thorns or a silver scarab that he tries hammering into his chest Eventually he just gets Lorn to affix it using fire.
  • The Big Guy: Mantigore is enormous, almost three heads taller than pretty much everyone he comes across.
  • Blood Knight: A former gladiator, and boy does it show in pretty much everything he does, being somewhat annoyed he isn't fighting much at all in nearly every scene.
  • Challenge Seeker: When he is served a poorly prepared poisonous snake, he takes the damage resulting from failing his constitution saves as a sign that the food is now a fight, and begins eating more.
  • Good Is Dumb: Just as dumb as a post, but on the side of good.
  • Situational Sociability: Mantigore is typically rather brusque, aggressive, and kinda boorish...except with Rinoa, for the most part.

    Gobtober
The 2021-23 October campaign run by Connor, replacing "Orktober" (Da Krew) due to Games Workshop's stricter IP licensing. The first year's campaign, "White Plume Mountain", follows a quintet of Goblinoids brought before the dangers of White Plume Mountain to try and retrieve three hellaciously powerful artifacts. The second year, "The Howling Woods", follows four of the original Goblinoids and one new addition. The third year, "Thronebreakers", has the goblin gang return to liberate an empire. This is also the first campaign in Unexpectables history that uses a tabletop service other than Roll20; using Astral Tabletop.

Player Characters

Anura

A happy-go-lucky Goblin Druid, played by @Theropod_Art.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: As a Druid from a swamp, her skin coloration is extremely similar to that of your average frog.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Tonk and Anura spent the intervening time between Gobtobers together in a swamp, and grew much closer as a result, finally upgrading into full-on item during the Howling Woods.
  • Token Good Teammate: If Tonk doesn't fit this description, Anura absolutely does.

Gurkin

Anura's frog.

Estik

A Hobgoblin Fighter, played by @MarkAllenJr.
  • Blood Knight: He's always itching for a fight, though his actual kill count is pitiable. Becomes even more prominent after finding and attuning to Blackrazor.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: At the end of the campaign, Estik and Tonk considered keeping Blackrazor and Wave and "running off into the sunset" together instead of returning them to their rightful owners. However, when Tonk decides to do the right thing, Estik cares about his friends too much to run off alone, and also returns his weapon.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Aside from rarely getting the opportunity to actually kill anything, he claims that any time he's knocked unconscious was just him taking a nap, and denies any possibility that he could have died.

Ritzle

A Goblin Rogue, played by @Lanipator.
  • Bad Boss: Between the second and third Gobtober, Ritzle is running his own tavern and has hired Eek the magical baboon and a goblin servant as employees. Ritzle admits to never learning what the goblin's name was, and also that the goblin's being paid less than Eek despite doing most of the actual hard work.
  • Consummate Professional: He might be about as trustworthy as he comes, but when he gives his word, he made it clear he would follow it to the letter.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: Ritzle has an affinity for rings, and will take the opportunity to steal them right from someone's hand, even if that someone is an enemy currently trying to choke him to death.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: He gets afflicted with lycanthropy whilst traversing the dungeon. Hilariously, since the werewolf that bit him used to be a mage, Ritzle believes himself to be a were-magician as well.

Tonk

A Bugbear Monk on the run from the law, played by @BoobsMcbalrog. Present for the first two campaigns, but absent for "Thronebreakers" due to settling down with Anura and staying home to take care of their newborn daughter.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: In the "Howling Woods" campaign, he's nearly brought low in an encounter with some Hags, and as he lays dying, he finally admits that his best times he ever had were with Anura in their little patch of swamp.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: At the end of the campaign, Estik and Tonk considered keeping Blackrazor and Wave and "running off into the sunset" together instead of returning them to their rightful owners. However, Tonk's desire to do the right thing (and clear a wrongfully-gained criminal history) wins out in the end.
  • Token Good Teammate: Tonk is regularly horrified by the lack of empathy most of the other goblins show, clearly trying to stay out of trouble.

Griggle

A Goblin Cleric, played by @GaijinGoombah. Only present during the "White Plume Mountain" campaign.
  • Necromancer: Uses Raise Dead rather liberally, and often against people the party killed that had ticked him off.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Oh yeah. Believing that all of the Goblin deities are "wimps", he instead devoted himself to a God of Death, and liberally uses his powers to both control and mock his deceased foes.

Ripper (real name Tobikage)

A Goblin Cleric, played by @EdBoscoVA. Present during the "Howling Woods" and "Thronebreakers" campaigns.
  • Expy: With his Samurai-esque armor, cold attitude, and antagonism towards (completely ordinary) turtles, he's a dead ringer for a better-behaved Shredder.
  • The Rival: For Estik.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: For Estik; both are melee fighters, but Estik is unbelievably reckless whereas Ripper is a cold, calculated fighter.

Shrike Bladescreamer

A Goblin Wizard, played by @HeyMrRabbit. Introduced in "Thronebreakers" as Kazador's representative on the job he offers to the goblin group.
  • Shoulders of Doom: He wears huge spiked pauldrons despite his otherwise magely appearance.

Notable NPCs

Jezebel

A mule that the team buys in order to carry their gear. It quickly becomes the party's favorite thing.
  • Emergency Food Supply Animal: Despite the party treating it fondly, they also note how Jezebel's going to be their "emergency rations" in the event that they end up trapped. Thankfully, this never comes to pass.
  • Team Pet: The party treat her well, and consider her a member of the party, to the point that player feats that are dependent on the number of nearby allies count her as one.

Nine

A flesh golem from inside White Plume Mountain's dungeon that the goblins convince to aid them.

Kazador Reign

A Hobgoblin Sorcerer. Has two unnaturally blue-skinned Hobgoblin bodyguards. In "Thronebreakers", he is the goblins' patron as he requests them to free his homeland from a tyrant.

The Stranger

A notorious criminal who knows the true name of the tyrant subjugating Kazador's homeland.

True One-offs

    The Unpredictables

Aussir, the Lizardfolk Fighter

An Albino Iguana Lizard folk played by Pr0Bait with a...disturbing fixation on what is and isn't edible.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: He thinks less in mortality and more along the lines of survivability and edibility.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: He has no qualms on eating sentient creatures as long as he thinks they taste good. He ends up eating Laurence after the group kill him.

Ghost Penadrid, the Kenku Cleric

A Snowey Owl Kenku Cleric played by ColonelCheru. A mischievous little owl who's on the search of someone special to them.
  • The Gadfly: Enjoys annoying the likes of Valcenien and Aussir.
  • Signature Laugh: Her laugh is noted to be like an owl's hooting.

Snowflower Succulent, the Goliath Druid

A Goliath played by Siggykuu. They're a rather kind bunch and a lover of nature. Just don't piss him off.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a rather affable fellow most of the times, but is absolutely merciless to those who earn his ire.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: At one point a group of travelers ended up vandalizing his personal garden. His response? Tracking them all down and killing them.
  • Nature Lover: As expected of a Druid, Snowflower has a very strong attachment to nature.

Valcenien Vaelmohn, the Gnome Sorcerer

A Gnome Wildmage played by Arcolf. He travels the northlands to find the elusive frosted iron
  • Buttmonkey: Thanks to his short stature and his rather arrogant personality he's typically the main target for being the butt of a lot of jokes.
  • Fastball Special: He's often the ball much to his discomfort.
  • Overly Long Name: His full name is Valcenien Amadeus Vilhelm Arcturion Belscarn Vaelmohn.

    My Little TTRPG One Shot
A one shot done right before Christmas time in 2019 using the My Little Pony: Tales of Equestria system.

Fizzy Cola

Connor's Character. A Unicorn who's special skill is the brewing of soda. He's a smooth, kind sort...but a bit of a shill, and not very decisive.
  • The Ditherer: Constantly second guesses himself, though it may just be because he overthinks situations.
  • The Lancer: By far the most calm and cool of the ponies.
  • Mind over Matter: As a unicorn, he possesses basic telekinesis.
  • Pungeon Master: All of his Sodas have horse-pun names. They are all dreadful.
  • The Smart Guy: The only member of the party with a "brainy" build.

Hoss Thunderhead

Gaijin's Character. A large, rotund farmer Pegasus who's good at farming, but isn't especially intelligent.
  • Dumb Muscle: Even for this group, he is especially strong but especially dumb.
  • Good Is Dumb: Hoss is a sweetheart, but he's quite slow-witted.

El Caballo Magnifico

Bosco's Character. A masked luchador pony who is the brother of Protein Stallion. He's an enormously strong sort, but he fears the fact that he lives in the shadow of his older brother.

Protein Stallion

Taka's Character. A wrestler pony who is the brother of Caballo. His special talent is his implacability...but is terribly bad at taking criticism.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: He used to have a Mask like his brother, but lost it in a Mask vs. Mane match...that he didn't read the rules of, leading to him losing his mask, then shaving off his mane anyway.
  • Boisterous Bruiser
  • Husky Russkie: Speaks with a very thick Russian accent and is one of the strongest members of the group.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: His voice sometimes changes back into Borky's.

    Tempest Halls One Shot
A one-shot run by Monty on New Year's Day 2020. It is notably the first one shot featured on the Unexpectables to use the Forgotten Realms setting, and the first running on pure 5e rules. The central idea is that four adventurers are imprisoned by Cloud Giants, and forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena, while also trying to find a way out.

Takehiko "Steelskin" Gadahn

Zito's character. A Samurai hobgoblin with ornate armor and sword who works as a sell-sword.
  • Blood Knight: The other characters react to being set in gladiatorial combat with a mixture of disdain and perfectly understandable apprehension. Gadahn just asks when do they start.
  • Cool Sword: His longsword is very intricate and is put to great use in his hands.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: A Ronin who seeks to test his blade wherever he ends up.
  • In the Hood: His official artwork shows him wearing a cloak with the hood pulled up, giving him a somewhat menacing appearance.
  • Only in It for the Money: He makes it clear once they escape that he only cared about getting out and exploiting his escape to increase his contract's dollar amount, made his acquaintance with the party more of a matter of convenience...Right up until Aura points out she's from nobility, and could likely see them rewarded.

Bhelvee

JoCat's Character. An Orcish Paladin with ratty armor and weapons.
  • Barrier Maiden: Her Oath is the Oath of the Crown, so she can create plenty of distractions and shields for her party, and given what the Cloud Giants are throwing them up against, she has to.
  • Being Good Sucks: She's not as assertive as Antonio, but she definitely believes in the good and righteous path, and tries to find out how many slaves she could reasonably save. As the situation continues on, it becomes abundantly clear it's just whoever's in the cage with them, and Aura, but she keeps trying.
  • Butch Lesbian: Maybe not in the stereotypical manner, but she's about as far from the alternative as you can get; she's wearing ratty and broken down armor, she's a wirey orc, and by the end of the adventure she's coated in blood and dirt. But her tenderness and willingness to protect and comfort Aura after springing her from the Cloud Giants and the fact that JoCat outright states she now has a girlfriend says she's interested.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: It works for the first fight. Then the cloud giants throw something bigger at them with breath weapons. She still manages to deflect much of the damage.
  • Rescue Romance: Starts one by the end of the session with Aura

Antonio DiCastillon Maximiliano

A swashbuckler Rogue Goblin who has a massively high opinion of himself and his skills.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Frequently attempts to threaten the Cloud giants. In spite of being a goblin, in front of Cloud Giants.note
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He comes off as an especially dim, haughty noble...because he is. His swordsmanship on the other hand, is no joke whatsoever.
  • Fragile Speedster: Befitting a goblin rogue. He's very nimble, but not very durable.
  • Upper-Class Twit: Definitely one.

Jar of Buttons

An extremely small Tabaxi Bard with only a drum strapped to their back. Considered a great warrior in Chult, but in this arena, they are only a very small and very cute kitty...with Bardic powers.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: A tiny Tabaxi that wouldn't look out of place on a cute postcard with a drum. Then they casually drop that their tribe hunts T-Rexes frequently, and their bardic powers that they use (or at least attempt to use), are pretty debilitating.
  • Combat Medic: Manages to keep the part on their feet with Mass Cure Wounds a few times.
  • Furry Reminder: Often found with their fur standing on end whenever scared and lands on their feet when thrown. Which is often.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Buttons default facial expression is an unimpressed frown.
  • This Means Warpaint: Buttons gives their companions war paint, but given who they are...some of them just end up cartoon drawings of cat bowls and sunflowers.
  • You No Take Candle: It's clear Common isn't Jar of Buttons first language.

     Oops! All Kobolds!
A one shot run by Monty as a result of the guest player Shenpai needing an emergency root canal in June of 2020. It is the second one-shot using the Forgotten Realms setting featuring a cast made entirely of Kobolds who set off to find out why their den's water supply has suddenly vanished.

Aloysius the Whitescale Kobold

Zito's character. A dour, death-domain cleric whose job is primarily to give a peaceful death to the den's warrior Kobolds who will not survive treatment when they come back injured.
  • Ascended Extra: In 2021, Aloysius became the focal character for Zito's largest homebrew work, Aloysius' Guide to Social Acceptance.
  • Expy: A dead-ringer of Rogal Dorn from If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device.
  • Hearing Voices: Apparently hears voices from the beyond demanding that he kill, but he insists on allowing creatures to reach their natural endpoints in life.
  • Make Them Rot: Aloysius uses spells like Inflict Wounds as a result of his Death domain, and rolled max damage all but twice every time he used it.
  • Mercy Kill: His job. As for his enemies on the other hand...
  • The Stoic: He is extremely deadpan and resolute, rarely if ever raising his voice except in the most dire circumstances...and even then he doesn't express it often.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Not evil per se, but his apparent phylactery owning which is typically not something any good or neutral character has.

Nox the Goldscale Kobold

Connor's character. A bombastic and deranged Artificer who refurbishes and repurposes magic items the den happens to come across. Also a published author of the book "100 Wonderful Ways to Use Butter".
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's a loud, bizarre shill who has an unfortunate and strange obsession with butter, but he is still a masterful artificer.
  • Dark Secret: Where he gets the milk for the butter, as their den is underground and they don't keep herd animals.
Rattles, audibly disturbed: Wow that is pretty crazy.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Happens over the course of the one-shot. Initially he's extremely goofy and a shill for his book, and over the course of the show slowly becomes more abrasive and brave from successive victories.
  • No Indoor Voice: A very loud and very dramatic kobold.
  • Mad Scientist: Has all the trappings as a potion-making Artificer.
  • Painting the Medium: Has a gas mask over his head, and uses a can to replicate the effect.
  • Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: Nox gets his skin saved by Aloysius against a Mimic, and develops an entirely one-sided crush on him, to the point that he sees the driders that begin ganging up on Aloysius as potential threats to Aloysius' affections.
Nox: Stay away from my man, you hussies!

Shuuk the Redscale Kobold

Goomba's character. A slimy, extremely people pleasing Kobold Sorcerer with aspirations of greatness...though he's too sycophantic and scared to actually act on it. He was previously a digger, but now guards the den from outsiders with his power.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Openly craves power, but is too spineless to openly seize it.
  • Ax-Crazy: Shuuk is...a bit of a crazed pyromaniac.
  • Dirty Coward: When he sees the final boss, he immediately turns tail and runs.
  • Expy: Shuuk is channeling skekSil / The Skeksis Chamberlain from The Dark Crystal.
  • Treacherous Advisor: Roughly his characterization, but he's too chickenshit to actually contradict anyone over anything big.
  • Super-Toughness: Shuuk has much thicker scales than his compatriots, something that saves his life more than once.
  • Verbal Tic: Ending every sentence with a rising "Yeeees?".

Rattles the Greyscale Kobold

Taka's character. A very quiet and unassuming Kobold necromancer whose job is to bury the dead and ensure they stay that way.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Far more quick-witted than most, even if he's not bright himself.
  • The Eeyore: Generally suffering from a severe case of self doubt, but also tends to attempt to bring everyone else down. Of course, since they're all dumb, it never sticks.
  • Expy: Essentially DBZ Abridged Dende as a Kobold.
    • As Taka himself puts it, Rattles can be described as a male kobold Daria.
  • No-Respect Guy: Can't quite match the level of power nor the personalities of the other and spends a lot of time effectively being the group's straight man who can't influence anything.
  • Undertaker: His normal job.

    B&E
A one-shot session about Breaking & Entering, run by Connor in April 2021. After getting on the wrong side of the powerful Zentarim Syndicate, a group of 5th-level strangers are allowed to live, but only if they can pay off their debts by stealing enough treasure...from a 20th-level Druid.

Kydrlyn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_kydrlyn.png
Monty's character. A famed drow thief who's always looking to get a big score.
  • French Jerk: Monty peppers their speech with french every so often, especially defaulting to "MERDE!" whenever in trouble.
  • Nervous Wreck: They literally jump whenever their cover is blown, or when receiving an unexpected pat on the back.
  • Token Evil Teammate: During the climax, they're having trouble deciding whether or not to ditch everyone else and escape with their loot (in order to become renowned as a legendary burglar, rather than due to nerves), to the point that Andre has to make a Persuasion check to convince them to stay.

Zhiisahlu

Mark Allen Jr.'s character. A Yuan-Ti with a surprising amount of nobility and a Pseudodragon companion.

Wesley

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_wesley.png
Mr. Rabbit's character. A deeply erratic bard who was thrown to the Zentarim prison when he invaded their meeting space.
  • Blind Seer: He turns into one when a crystal ball he loots turns out to grant Clairvoyance and Truesight.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Whenever he uses Bardic Inspiration, he states a few things the target character should be proud of...and then ends by stating an accomplishment of their player.
  • Connected All Along: During the climax, the druid turns out to be a fan of his music, even giving him food to eat on a past occasion.
  • Expy: He's heavily inspired by musician Wesley Willis.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: During the campaign, he tends to worsen the situation instead of improving it by loudly announcing his name and intent...during a stealth mission.
  • The Millstone: He's an effective bard, and the actual players enjoy his theatrics, but in-setting his behavior tends to cause unnecessary conflict and frustrate the other burglars.
  • Percussive Shutdown: He claims that he can open an Arcane Lock by headbutting it. His actual attempt at doing so...goes poorly.
  • Street Musician: He's a blind, homeless bard who got into this mess by busking in front of the wrong building.

Andre Andreannovich

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_andre.jpg
Ed Bosco's character. An otherwise normal-looking human ranger who carries a unique crossbow.
  • Only Sane Man: Ends up the most level-headed member of the party.

Mila

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_mila.png
Sarah Anne Williams's character. A Kenku with a terse way of looking at the world, and is extremely guarded.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She openly voices her disdain for the party, with only a couple of moments where she helps them because they don't bother her.
  • When She Smiles: Played with, in that it's stated that she's giving the first genuine smile anyone in the group has seen after the group successfully convinces the Druid to spare them...but Kydrlyn is freaked out by the unusual sight and tries to clamp her beak shut.

Flawless

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_flawless.png
Zito's character. An arrogant pillar of a man. Actually a changeling, who takes the face forms of those he encounters to make them look better on his chiseled physique.
  • Awesome Ego: An impossibly arrogant creature, but his affect is so bombastic it's hard to take seriously.
  • Laughing Mad: Briefly goes into a fit of crazed, joyous laughter when one of the magical items the party loots is a Longsword that can cast Wish.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He has a regular name, but prefers that everyone addresses him as Flawless.
  • Sheathe Your Sword: When the owner of the home the party's broken into returns, despite having stolen a fair amount of both valuable and powerful magical artifacts, Flawless' first instinct is to negotiate instead of fighting back.

Diabrix Fernshadow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unexpectables_diabrix.jpg
An Archdruid of the Emerald Enclave, and the "boss" of the one-shot.
  • Recruiting the Criminal: At the end of the one-shot, she offers the entire group clemency and forgives their attempt to steal from her if they accept to being trained to fight against the Zentarim Syndicate.

     Strixhaven Tour de Mort
The first sponsored one-shot with Wizards of the Coast; run in December of 2021. It features five prospective students trying to apply to Arcavios' premiere magical school, known as Strixhaven. But for whatever reason, their tickets appear to have been altered...

Ronnack

Connor's character. A scholarly and somewhat bombastic Minotaur with a floating spellbook.
  • Large Runt: For a minotaur, he's actually quite puny, but still towers over most of his companions (save Thell).
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: He's erudite, not terribly strong, and was never really any good at charging or other such activities; all things opposite what his typical race is known for.

Bertrude Braveroost

Gaijin's character. A dorky Owling with huge glasses hoping to enter the school not just for his own benefit, but to continue his family name, not that he's ready to...
  • Nerd Glasses: He's always seen with glasses that make his already-large Owling eyes seem even bigger.
  • Noodle Incident: During the silkball game, we learn he has a bad sports-related memory involving an old classmate named Brett.

Cecil Remington

Sarah's character. A tiny but extremely excitable Owling interested in the magic one uses in song.
  • Ambiguously Related: Cecil claims to be Thell's little brother, but with no mention of either of them being adopted, and both of them being of completely races, it's unclear how they're related.
  • Cute Owl: Cecil is an Owlin small enough to perch on Thell's shoulder and is simply adorable.
  • Keet: Cecil is very energetic and excitable, particularly when the subjects of music and storytelling are brought up.

Thell Remington

Bosco's character. Cecil's "big" brother; an enormous taciturn Minotaur who's come with his brother to learn the ways of magic.
  • Ambiguously Related: Thell and Cecil claim to be direct kin with shared familiar features, but given that they're of completely different races, it's not clear if this is the truth.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's constantly supporting and encouraging Cecil, even for minor things like origami.
  • Butt-Monkey: He has the hardest time out of anyone with the various activities the party takes part in, from his origami hawk attacking him, to going facefirst into the mud during the silkball game. Thell finally gets his moment in the sun when he lands the killing blow on the Mage Hunter.
  • Running Gag: Whenever he wants to add something to a conversation, he has a tendency to raise his hand.

Abner Summerhop

Zito's character. A bizarre Barn Owl-Owling with an incredible suit of armor that appears to allow him to do incredible things.
  • Ancestral Weapon: His Powered Armor was created by his grandfather and passed down to him.
  • Expy: To Zito's past Keet characters, most recently Killroy from TFS at the Table: Foolproof.
  • Keet: Abner's incredibly enthusiastic about learning more about the applications of magic, even proclaiming "Oh boy!" when the opportunity for new applications arises.
  • Powered Armor: His suit of armor is enchanted, allowing him to perform incredible feats.
  • Secret Identity Vocal Shift: Whenever he's wearing the helmet of his Powered Armor, his voice notably deepens. When another party member points out the jarring shift in tone, Abner is confused, as he thinks he sounds exactly the same.
  • Shock and Awe: His grandfather's armor allows him to hurl bolts of lightning.
