Characters / Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan - Nura Clan

Go To

Nura Clan

The clan to which Rikuo and his True Companions belong to. Created by Rikuo's grandfather and later led by his father, the Nura clan rules over eastern Japan. There are about ten thousand youkai in the clan's ranks, divided into roughly 70 sub-groups. The group is kind of like a youkai yakuza, getting its funds from land gods who pay for protection (land gods in turn get money from offerings humans leave at their shrines) and members providing various services for both youkai and humans.

Rikuo Faction

The group of Rikuo's True Companions who support him as the candidate for the third Head. They form Rikuo's Hyakki Yakō, and support him during battle. Its members wear black jackets with the symbol for "fear" emblazoned on the back, which can only be worn by those Rikuo has acknowledged. The first members of Rikuo's group were his bodyguards.

"Being the master of all spirits doesn't mean piling the corpses of your clan on top of you!"

The protagonist of the manga, Rikuo is a human-youkai hybrid and the grandson of Nurarihyon, the leader of the Nura clan. As such, he is entitled to become the third head of the clan. Since he is a quarter youkai, Rikuo spends the day as a human and turns into a youkai at night. His day and night form have a bit of a Split Personality going on, as they often have different opinions on many subjects, though it was more apparent in the beginning.

As a Nurarihyon, Rikuo possesses power over the perception of others, allowing him to become functionally invisible or appear where he isn't. Additionally, his mixed lineage allows him to wear the "fear" of his followers, resulting in a Fusion Dance of sorts.

He also makes an appearance in the smartphone RPG Onmyōji (2016) as a limited-offer SSR shikigami.

  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Downplayed. His eye colors are yellow like his grandfather and father in the manga. But they are red in the anime, but they were also originally red in the manga.
  • All Your Powers Combined: He later masters Matoi, an ability which was also used by his father Rihan, to absorb the fear of his youkai followers into himself and use it as his own.
  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: Initially, he claims he can't remember anything his youkai form does. After he faces Gyuki, he admitted to pretending to have no recollection to distance himself from the world of youkai.
  • Badass Adorable: He’s a cute young boy who can still kick your ass if you’re his enemy.
  • Benevolent Boss: He leads his group of Yokai and treats them as family.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Particularly as a human, he is all smiles and sunshine unless you make him pissed by hurting his human and youkai friends.
  • Brutal Honesty: Played for Laughs. While drunk and trying to flirt with Keijoro, he also calls him out because he didn't spill what he feels for her. Kubinashi is shocked, Aotabo and Kurotabo shouts that was a low blow, but Keijoro actually finds it funny.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: To be fair, this happened after he drank the strongest youkai sake.
  • The Casanova: Apparently getting smashed turns his night form into this. And he targets every lady (and one dude) in the vicinity, though only few girls blushed because only a few attended.
  • Chaste Hero: He's mostly oblivious to Tsurara's and Kana's affections for him. He doesn't even seem to realize why Tsurara gets flustered when he licks her ice cream (as she thinks that counts for an Indirect Kiss). An omake in the final volume does show him trying to kiss Tsurara so maybe he will show more interest in romance with her later on.
  • Cheerful Child: When he was a boy, it was hard to get him down.
  • Coat Cape: His youkai form wears his haori like a cape.
  • Determinator: He will go to Hell and back to make sure all is done.
  • Due to the Dead: When Danuki begs Rikuo to spare his son's life, all Rikuo asks for as a condition is that all the Shikoku youkai who were killed by Tamazuki should be given a grave to pay their respects.
  • Hammerspace: A dramatic variant; where does he keep that sake bowl?
  • Hot-Blooded: He does maintain an air of calmness, but it becomes more apparent the further a fight goes on.
  • Hybrid Power: Like his father before him, Rikuo can use Matoi, a technique that consists of letting another youkai's fear possess his human half so his youkai half can use it as his own.
  • I Am What I Am: A big part of his character arc is accepting his heritage. First, he must accept his youkai blood so he resolves to lead the youkai. Later, he must accept that his human blood doesn't make him weaker than full-blooded youkai.
  • Identical Grandson: Rikuo looks almost exactly like his grandfather did when he was young.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: At first, he insisted all he wanted was to live as a normal human because he was convinced by his classmates that all youkai were bad and Kana told him he should become a great civilian. But as he realized youkai would still come after his human friends, he realized he needed to be badass and rule the youkai.
  • In Vino Veritas: Becoming drunk makes him a flirt who wants some action with any pretty girl in the vicinity. Though he forgets what happened in the morning.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: Nenekirimaru.
  • Kid Hero: He's the 12-year-old heroic protagonist fighting evil youkai.
  • Magnetic Hero: Like his father and grandfather, one of Rikuo's greatest strengths is his ability to attract yokai to his side and make allies with almost anyone. The Tonou Yokai are a living example; when asked why they came to Kyoto with Rikuo in the first place, they stumble for an answer until Itaku being the Tsundere he is states that Rikuo wouldn't last in Kyoto without them. Though this is definitely true, you can see that that they already accepted Rikuo as one of their own.
  • Mr. Fanservice: As his youkai self.
  • Nice Guy: He's a kind-hearted boy who wants to protect his family and friends.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Played straight earlier on, but is eventually subverted as tougher enemies appeared, beginning notably with Hagoromo's group.
  • Nighttime Transformation: He normally can only transform into his youkai form at night, although he can transform during the day if he's at a dark place or there's a lot of youkai in the atmosphere.
  • Older Alter Ego: Played with. While his youkai side looks older than his human side, he is still only twelve years old. This may have something to do with how a youkai is considered to be an adult when they turn thirteen.
  • Perception Filter: His early fear makes him appear to be invisible to all those except the ones strong enough to see through it. When he learns how to better use the power, he adds decoys to trick his opponent with.
  • Playing with Fire: One of Rikuo's techniques is to ignite a bowl of sacred sake, and breathe lightly into it, causing fire to go everywhere. As long there are ripples in the bowl the fire will keep burning.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: His "Offense" fear adds more black to his hair.
  • Power Tattoo: By using Matoi, he gains a tattoo on his back that represents the youkai who has lent him their power.
  • Powers via Possession: The essence of Matoi. Another yokai(s) let their fear possess Rikuo's human half, tremendously increasing his power and being to use said yokai's special ability.
  • The Prankster: When he was a child, he enjoyed playing pranks on the youkai in his house. He grew out of it.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: Rikuo has excellent eyesight. He wears his glasses to better establish his diligent human persona, not because he needs them.
  • Raised by Grandparents: While his mother is still alive, his grandfather takes care of him in place of his father.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes turn red in his youkai form in the anime and early manga.
  • Refusal of the Call: Initially, he strongly refuses to assume his position as the third head of the clan. He eventually comes to accept it and takes several levels in badass.
  • Sexier Alter Ego: While his human form is more on the cute side, his youkai form is a handsome young man.
  • Ship Tease: He gets quite alot of shipping moments with several females during the course of the series, such as Tsurara, Kana, Yura, and even Awashima (though the latter is just teasing him but she did admit to liking Rikuo, of course not romantically).
  • Split Personality: Downplayed, but it's still there. Day Rikuo is your Generic Nice Guy human and Night Rikuo is more mischevious but more mature and Hot-Blooded (not unlike his grandfather in his youth). But they're essentially the same person.
  • Super-Powered Alter Ego: Rikuo's youkai form is the one who can use the powers of his youkai blood.
  • The Tease: In Youkai form. And he enjoys it a lot.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After the Gyuuki incident, he finally accepted his destiny to become the third and stopped being a wimp.
  • Uneven Hybrid: He is 1/4 youkai.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Both sides need to be on agreement first to do it.
  • Worthy Opponent: He's the first opponent who can motivate the Blood Knight Tsuchigumo to go all-out in a fight after 1,000 years.
  • You Killed My Father: He's not pleased when he discovers that Hagoromo Gitsune was the one who murdered his father. It's ultimately subverted; Yamabuki Otome was Brainwashed and Crazy, and had actually killed Rihan before Hagoromo Gitsune possessed her.

    Yuki Onna / Tsurara Oikawa

Human disguise
Voiced by: Yui Horie (JP), Cassandra Lee Morris (EN)

Tsurara is Rikuo's trusted attendant and bodyguard, one of the first members of his Hyakki Yakō. She's a cheerful and dedicated Youkai who plunges wholeheartedly into any task, whether it's guarding Rikuo or taking care of the main house. As part of her bodyguard duty, she follows him to school as Tsurara Oikawa.

  • Action Girl: She’s a bodyguard, after all.
  • The Bait: In the Kyoto arc, Tsuchigumo takes Tsurara as prisoner to lure Rikuo into a fight because Rikuo has the potential of being a Worthy Opponent.
  • Badass Adorable: She looks like a pretty and lovable young girl, but she's still a very capable youkai who can freeze anyone who attacks her and Rikuo.
  • Body to Jewel: Her tears immediately crystallize after falling from her eyes.
  • Bodyguard Crush: As one of Rikuo's bodyguards, it's her duty to protect him. She also happens to have a huge crush on him, so she's more than happy about her job. The manga ending hints that they may have become an Official Couple.
  • Breath Weapon: She can blow out cold air from her mouth.
  • Breakout Character: During the series’ original Japanese run in Weekly Shounen Jump she quickly became popular among readers who eventually made sure to get Tsurara to rank high in the magazine’s official popularity polls, going on to become the female character with the most votes by the final poll; all of that can be seen with Tsurara’s presence in the series growing as it went, early on in the manga she was mostly a supporting character, by the end of it she had as much panel-time as several other main characters, which she by then was one of, in fact, by the end of the manga Tsurara is effectively the girl who Rikuo has associated with the most.
  • Clark Kenting
"I wonder who that blue-eyed girl is... Her features are identical to Tsurara's... Obviously not Tsurara!"
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She never likes to see Rikuo around other girls.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Shouei, young Rikuo and technically the Arawashi Clan.
  • Damsel in Distress: She's beaten and kidnapped by Tsuchigumo in the middle of the Kyoto arc, as Tsuchigumo knew Rikuo would come to rescue her.
  • Declaration of Protection: She repeatedly states that she has to protect Rikuo.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father is never brought up.
  • Elemental Weapon: She can create a naginata made of ice.
  • Ethereal White Dress: As expected from a Yuki-onna, she always wears a white kimono in her Yōkai form.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Her eyes have a circle parallel to the iris.
  • Eye Color Change: The only difference between her human and yokai forms is that she has gold eyes as a yokai and blue ones as a human.
  • Forced Sleep: She can use her breath to blow cold air and make people fall asleep.
  • Generation Xerox: Like her mother before her, Tsurara is the yuki-onna of the Nura Clan and has a crush on its leader.
  • An Ice Person: Her "fear" is the ability to manipulate ice and cold wind, which primarily enables her to release a long breath of snowstorm that can freeze her opponent.
  • Interrupted Suicide: When she was trapped by Tsuchigumo, she knew that she had almost no chance of defeating him so she decided that she would rather kill herself than be a bait to lure Rikuo in a fight with Tsuchigumo... Luckily, Rikuo arrived to save her just in time.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She lives and breathes by this trope. For her, as long as Rikuo is happy she is willing to do ANYTHING. For example, she's willing to let Kana be near Rikuo as his human side would be the happiest. Of course, she also knows in 100 years, Kana will surely be dead and she can move in and be close with Rikuo.
  • Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Whereas her mother was a Tsundere who openly flirted with Nurarihyon, Tsurara is a Nice Girl who is much more subtle in her affections for Rikuo.
  • Meaningful Name: Tsurara is the Japanese word for "Icicle". However, the characters for her name literally translate to "Ice Beauty".
  • Naginatas Are Feminine: She's the most feminine youkai girl in Rikuo's faction and her weapon is a naginata.
  • Nice Girl: She's a kind and friendly girl.
  • Plucky Girl: She may lack experience and power, but not spirit.
  • Reflectionless Useless Eyes: Her eyes usually don't reflect highlights. They gain shine when she takes human disguise.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She is always seen wearing a white scarf, befitting her ice powers.
  • Spiked Blood: Some mice freeze solid from drinking Tsurara's blood.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She's the spitting image of her mother.
  • Subordinate Excuse: She's so devoted to Rikuo not only because she's his servant, but because of her huge crush on him.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: A distinct characteristic of her youkai form. When she's in her human disguise she has blue eyes.
  • Team Chef: She's in charge of the cooking for the Nura Clan's main house.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Rikuo, of course. She respects and admires him not because he is the third heir, but because of whom he is as a person.
  • Yuki-onna: Tsurara is a female spirit of snow in a pure white kimono who can freeze her enemies with her breath.

One of Rikuo's attendants. A depraved monk wearing a navy blue monk robe, he has superhuman strength that allows him to pulverize youkai with one hit. He is Rikuo's bodyguard as well as the Nura clan assault commander. He was once human, but turned into a youkai after killing many people. He is loud and boisterous, but possesses a kind heart and loves children. When he has to go as a human, he is the leader of a local biker gang.

    Kurotabō

Voiced by: Kosuke Toriumi (JP), Ben Pronsky (EN)

One of Rikuo's attendants. He is the other assault commander of the Nura clan.

  • Accidental Pervert: Always manages to have his hands in the wrong place on the wrong gender at the wrong time, resulting in him almost getting arrested by police (for Natsumi) and getting called an "erotabou" ("hentai monk") by Awashima.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The list of humans and demons who owe their lives to his last-minute saves is growing.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: He made his pledge with Rihan when the latter needed to use Matoi with Kurotabo in order to defeat Sanmoto who had become a youkai and was destroying Edo.
  • Friend to All Children: Incarnated, he was born of a tale about a monk with infinite arsenal appearing wherever children were threatened and saving them from bad guys.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The story of how he joined the Nura Clan is the setup for the Hundred Tales Arc. The Hundred Tales overrode his original tale and turned him to their side, making him work as their personal assassin. Eventually, he was sent to kill Rihan who overpowered him and asked him to join his Night Parade. When Kurotabo realized Sanmoto was an evil monster and remembered who he really was, he made a pledge with Rihan so they could defeat Sanmoto together.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Aotabo. The pair frequently team up and are Rikuo’s main male bodyguards.
  • Horned Humanoid: A very handsome model of this trope. Thin and spiral-shaped while he was a General in the Hundred Tales Clan, his horns were filed down into short nubs after joining the Nura Clan and are perpetually hidden under his hat.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: He has an infinite number of weapons at his disposal.
  • In-Series Nickname: Sometimes go by “Kuro”.

  • Tulpa: He's a youkai created from children's wishes and hopes of a powerful monk appearing to protect them from those who would harm them.
  • Walking Armory: He has a limitless arsenal of weapons at his disposal which remain concealed within his sleeves when not in use.

    Kubinashi
I wouldn't want a boss who kills his own comrades
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kubinashi_nura.png

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai (JP), Todd Haberkorn (credited as Todd Stone) (EN)

Kubinashi is a yōkai whose head floats above his shoulders and who has no neck.

  • Accidental Pervert: In an OVA, his head is sent flying by Aotabō and Kurotabō and it just happens to land right between Kejoro's naked breasts.
  • Battle Couple: He and Kejōrō form a good team in battle. She immobilizes or distracts their enemies with her Prehensile Hair so Kubinashi can finish them off. Their relationship is also the focus of much Ship Tease.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's usually a calm and amicable guy. If anyone threatens Rikuo, he can revert back to his old youkai hunter self.
  • Body Double: He takes Rikuo's place during his speech at school to take Inugami's attack for Rikuo.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: In an omake, a drunken Rikuo makes fun of how Kubinashi hasn't told Kejōrō the truth about what he feels for her even after hundreds of years of knowing each other.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When he was still human, he was a thief. He was very loyal to a oiran named Shiragiku, but after hers and all of his friends's death related to a yōkai incident he became one himself, bent on revenge against all yōkai and believing that friends were nothing more than hindrances to him. After meeting Rihan, this changed and with time he returned to being gentle and polite, though he still can be serious and dangerous.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: How he joined the Nura clan. He was defeated By Rihan but after being spared, he become one of his most loyal underlings.
  • First-Name Basis: He calls Kejōrō by her human name.
  • Heroic BSoD: When Rikuo got beaten by Tsuchigumo and he was unable to do anything he kind of lost it and returned to his pre-meeting Rihan persona... but thanks to Kejoro he got better.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: He was a famous youkai hunter before he met Rihan.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: When he was still a human. Briefly mentioned in the manga/anime but developed in the novels.
  • Master of Threads: He fights using a red string (which is made from Kejoro's hair and Jurogumo thread) that entangles the target the more it struggles, and which can become as strong as chains when he imbues it with his "Fear".
  • Official Couple: According to the light novels and certain manga chapters, he and Kejoro have had quite the past and are still going strong.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: He wears a black scarf, although how it stays in place when he has no neck is a mystery.
  • Undying Loyalty: After the Defeat Means Friendship incident, he became extremely loyal to Rihan and, by being cherished by Rihan, Wakana, the mother of Rikuo. Even after Rihan's death, his loyalty to both of them has not wavered.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Or more like he has trouble fighting against women, he would rather make them give up before harming them.

Kejōrō is a yōkai who uses her hair to fight. The members of the Kiyojūji Paranormal Investigation Squad frequently mistake her to be Rikuo's older sister.

  • Battle Couple: She and Kubinashi team up in battle as part of their Ship Tease. She uses her Prehensile Hair to immobilize or distract their enemies and then Kubinashi finishes them off with his Razor Floss.
  • Childhood Friends: She has known Kubinashi since she was a child and both were still humans. Ship Tease indicates a Childhood Friend Romance between them.
  • Cool Big Sis: Acts like this towards the younger members of the team.
  • First-Name Basis: With Kubinashi in private.
Kejōrō: When we're alone together, he calls me "Kino."
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: She takes it upon herself to make Kubinashi get back some sense of reason when he briefly reverts back to his loner assassin ways.
  • Official Couple: With Kubinashi, according to the light novels and certain implications in the manga.
  • Prehensile Hair: She can stretch and grow her hair to extraordinary lengths and is able to use it much like a lasso.
  • Second Love: In the past, Kubinashi had a close relationship with an oiran named Shiragiku back when he was human and Kejōrō served as that oiran's attendant. Tragically, Shiragiku committed suicide to prevent one of Kubinashi's enemies from getting information out of her. After Kejōrō and Kubinashi both became youkai, they have developed a close relationship that goes strong to this day.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Tsurara and Rikuo. She especially likes to tease Tsurara about it.
  • Sultry Bangs: She's a voluptuous beauty yokai with long bangs covering the right side of her face
  • Team Chef: She most frequently handles kitchen duties around the Nura household.
  • Team Mom: She acts as the mother figure to the whole Nura household. Lampshaded by Kakimoto.
  • Tsundere: Sweet type. Kejōrō is very nice and even-tempered, unless Kubinashi does something that makes her angry. She gets mad when Kubinashi is being stubborn and tries to fight enemies alone, so she reminds him (with violence) that she's there to help him out. She even calls him an idiot while blushing.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She has a fear of rats.

    Kappa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kappa_nura.png
Voiced by: Masahito Yabe (JP), Bryce Papenbrook (EN)

  • Gratuitous Ninja: He wears a ninja costume and his battle moves are called ninja techniques for no apparent reason other than because it's cool.
  • Hidden Depths: Likes western music.
  • Kappa: Like the legendary kappa, he loves cucumbers and fights extremely well near water.
  • Making a Splash: He's a youkai whose domain is the fear of water, allowing him control over the element.
  • Morphic Resonance: His hands are still webbed in his human disguise.
  • Nice Guy: He’s a rather cheerful and kind person.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: A yellow scarf, to be exact.
  • Thinking Up Portals: He can create portals of water that connect to ponds.

    Jami
" More than dying I was thinking of what would happen if I could not protect that person."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Jami_4327.png
Voiced by: Yuu Asakawa (JP)

Jami is a yōkai who was thought to be terrorizing Shinako Suganuma by looming over her bedside each night, but was actuality protecting her from the corrupt priest of the local shrine. He laters exchanges sakazuki with Rikuo and joins his Hyakki.

  • Dark Is Not Evil: He has the appearance of a ghost out of a horror movie, but he's really one of the most noble of Rikuo's youkai companions.
  • Death by Woman Scorned: He died as a consequence of being locked up in an underground dungeon by his master's jealous wife. This made it impossible for him to escape during a flood in the town and he drowned.
  • The Faceless: His face is covered in paper seals. In ep. 23 of Sennen Makyou, we get a brief glimpse of his face when he saves Awashima from the Nue's tentacles. Not surprisingly, he's very pretty.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: When he was human, he was an attractive young man with long hair worn in a ponytail.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: In his first appearance, a girl thought Jami was haunting her in her sleep. When she thinks he's going to attack her, Jami ends up saving her from some monsters as some bad guys had set her up in a trap. Than it's revealed that Jami was protecting the girl because she's a descendant of his original master.
  • The Quiet One: He speaks so little that the Nura Clan members are shocked when they hear he can speak.
  • Undying Loyalty: To his master, Sadamori Suganuma. His entire reason for becoming a youkai was to protect him and his descendants even after his own death.
"All this time, I have continued to protect my lord's children... I... have continued to protect that person..."

The three oldest children of Karasu Tengu. Kuroumaru is the first of the triplets, Tosakamaru the 2nd and Sasami the youngest and only girl.

  • Embarrassing First Name: Karasu Tengu says that he named his daughter "Sasami" because it sounds cute, adding that she definitely has to become a beautiful woman. She apparently hated receiving a name like that, as evidenced by her trying to strangle Karasu Tengu afterward. Sasami is also noted to have a book for "Recommended Names".
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: They have at least four younger siblings back at the Mt. Takao.
  • Shipper on Deck: As of chapter 209, Kuroumaru ships Gozu x Tsurara.
  • Sibling Team: The three siblings work as a unit and always fight together.
  • The Stoic: The three of them rarely show any emotion, but Kuroumaru stands out.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Sasami is the only one of the three who wears glasses and is as straight-faced as her siblings.
  • Tengu: The three are pure-blooded tengu. They usually appear as humans with crow wings, but can take a full humanoid crow form.
  • Winged Humanoid: Unlike their father, they look mostly human except for the black wings on their backs.

The Supreme Commander of the Nura Clan, he's also Rihan's father and Rikuo's grandfather. As the one from Japanese legends, he likes to sneak into someone's house, drink their tea, eat their food and act as if it is his own house.

  • Benevolent Boss: He’s the leader of the Nura Clan and cares for his subordinates. And most of them are loyal to him in return.
  • Coat Cape: In his younger days, he wore his haori off his shoulders like a cape.
  • Cool Old Guy: He’s portrayed as nothing short of a loving grandfather towards Rikuo.
  • Dead Person Conversation: In the last chapter of the manga, he speaks briefly with Youhime, while she is holding baby Rihan.
  • Elderly Immortal: Almost all the youkai at the Nura Clan are centuries old, but Nurarihyon is the only one who has physically aged into an old man while everyone else from his generation looks the same as they did 400 years ago. This is because Hagoromo Gitsune's curse reduced his lifespan.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: He proposed to Youhime on what was pretty much their first date. After he saved her from Hagoromo Gitsune, she agreed to spend the rest of her life with him.
  • Happily Married: His marriage with Youhime was one of the happiest times of his life.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Nurarihyon is described as "A yokai that sits in someone's house and drinks their tea," which sounds pretty lame when you first think about it. However, his Perception Filter is actually a powerful ability since it ends up being a kind of invisibility. The way he describes his own power when fighting Muchi could double as a Badass Boast. He basically says that he's so overwhelmingly powerful that lesser beings stop being able to perceive him out of sheer terror.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Compare his wrinkled dwarf current self with his Pretty Boy past self.
  • Love at First Sight: It only took him giving Youhime one look to decide making her his wife.
  • Made of Iron: He survived getting his heart ripped out by Hagoromo Gitsune.
  • Master of Illusion: His fear allows him to create illusions, such as appearing as his young self in front of Hagoromo Gitsune.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Since youkai have very long lifespans, he's still alive 400 years after the death of his human wife.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: He significantly shrunk down in his old age.
  • The Mourning After: He has a personal shrine to honor the memory of his late wife Yōhime. Even centuries after her death, she's the only woman he ever loved.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Her was too damn handsome in his younger days.
  • Mundane Utility: His Perception Filter is useful for pulling eat and run at restaurants.
  • My Greatest Failure: He regrets not being able to avoid his son's, and Hihi's deaths.
  • Odd Friendship: He was on good terms with the onmyoji Hidemoto 400 years ago despite youkai being the natural enemy of onmyoji. They even drank together at the Keikain headquarters. They still get along when they meet again in the present day thanks to Yura summoning Hidemoto.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His son Rihan was murdered because of Abe no Seimei's and Sanmoto's ploy.
  • Parental Substitute: Was Rikuo’s main father figure after his own father’s death.
  • Perception Filter: The power of his terror is so dreadful that those weaker than him suffer a mental block that makes them unable to perceive Nurarihyon even when he's right in front of them.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's over 400 years old while looking like a regular old man.
  • Stalker with a Crush: He watched Youhime from the shadows before trying to approach her.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: In his youth, his eyes were golden and he's the only Nura clan head who is a full youkai.
  • Supernaturally Young Parent: In the Edo period flashbacks, he looks more like his son Rihan's brother due to youkai aging slowly.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Muchi gloats about killing Hihi.
  • Weirdness Censor: His main power. He has this as a constant power around himself, allowing him to walk around in his demonic form and have everyone simply assume he's a normal old man. Even exorcists. He and his descendants can ramp it up to create functional invisibility, for use in combat, stealing, and dine and dashes.

Nurarihyon's son and Rikuo's father, Rihan was the Second Supreme Commander of the Nura Clan before his death.

  • All Your Powers Combined: Matoi, a technique invented by Rihan himself, allowed him to use the fear of the youkai who followed him.
  • Angst Nuke: When Setsura confessed that she met Yamabuki Otome when the latter was in her deathbed, Rihan's fear literally blows up the room they're in and he very nearly strangles Setsura to death before calming down.
  • Child of Two Worlds: He was the son of a youkai and a human, allowing him to make good friends both with other youkai and humans. Rihan's main motivation was protecting the balance between the two societies because he loved them both.
  • Disappeared Dad: He leaded the Nura Clan during its best times. After his death, his son Rikuo is following his footsteps.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: He's half-human, half-youkai.
  • Happily Married: Both of his marriages to Yamabuki and later, to Wakana were quite happy.
  • Healing Hands: Inherited the magical ability to heal from his mother, Yōhime.
  • Hybrid Power: He invented Matoi, a technique that allowed him to absorb another youkai's fear into his human half and combine it with his own youkai half's fear.

  • Mr. Fanservice: Even more than his father and son.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: His death led to the Nura Clan nearly falling apart and Rikuo having to restore it to its former glory.
  • Posthumous Character: He's already dead at the start of the series and only appears in flashbacks.
  • Precocious Crush: When he was a young child, he said he wanted to make his Cool Big Sis Setsura his bride when he grew up.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He was around 400 years old when he died. Not that anyone could tell because he looked as if he was in his mid-twenties at the oldest.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He was as handsome as his father's younger self and his son's night form, except that Rihan inherited his mother's black hair.

  • Arc Villain: He's the main antagonist of Mount Nejireme arc.
  • Bully Magnet: When he was a kid, his fellow students were jealous of his exceptional aptitude and used to throw stones at him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His father died when he was five and he was sent to a temple. After being bullied by his fellow students, he snuck out of the temple and went back home. However, he was tricked by two youkai into entering Mount Nejireme. As a result, he was eaten by the same yōkai which had devoured his mother. Through the power of his hatred and will, he was reborn as a youkai and became the new master of Mount Nejireme. Years later, Nurarihyon defeated him and convinced him to join his Hyakki Yakou.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Twice. Once when he was defeated by Nurarihyon and the second time when he was defeated by Rikuo. He became their loyal follower after both defeats.
  • Demon of Human Origin: He was once a human boy named Umewakamaru. After he discovered a youkai had devoured his mother, his hatred and wish for revenge transformed him into the youkai Gyūki.
  • Easily Forgiven: Even though he sent his subordinates after Rikuo's friends and seriously intended to kill Rikuo in their duel, Rikuo completely forgives him and decides he should receive no punishment for his transgression. After all, Rikuo understands Gyūki did all that because he cares about the Nura Clan and his actions were what made Rikuo gather the resolve to inherit the clan. Still, many youkai in the clan think Rikuo is being too soft with Gyūki.
  • I Let You Win: He displayed his true Fear to Rikuo (albeit human at the time) than their first encounter, meaning he was holding back to test his resolve. Despite his intentions to have him killed if he didn't measure up, he was holding back in order to see whether he was worthy or not of being a leader.
  • Interrupted Suicide: After Rikuo defeats him in their duel, Gyūki tries to commit suicide as self-punishment for turning his blade against the next Nura Clan family head. Rikuo cuts the blade before Gyūki stabs himself.
  • Meaningful Rename: He changed his name from Umewakamaru to Gyuki to reflect his rejection of humanity.
  • Not So Above It All: Gozumaru thinks the members of the Rikuo faction are being foolish when they get themselves matching haori. Then Gyuuki gets some for himself, Gozumaru, and Mezumaru.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Benign example like Rikuo's Night Form

  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's a tall and handsome man with long black hair.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Nura Clan. He won't forgive anyone who endangers his beloved Nura Clan, even if that means killing Rikuo and committing seppuku.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Then Humans Are the Real Monsters happened along with a gyuki eating his mother, leading to become an inhuman monster.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: He's the first serious enemy Rikuo has to face and the one who forces him to acknowledge his yokai side and take part in the clan's dangerous business.
  • You Kill It, You Bought It: He became known as Gyuuki after killing the original Gyuuki.

Gozumaru is the "Gyūki Clan's" young head. He now resides in the main house along with Gyuuki and Mezu, which doesn't seem to make him very happy.

  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Mezu.
  • Hot-Blooded: Won’t hesitate to begin the fight.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He is cold and cruel, considering the main house to be inferior to the Gyūki Clan. However, he's not a bad guy and is very loyal to Gyuki.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: He uses a katana.
  • Loving Bully: Towards Tsurara. It was hinted on the manga whenever the two interacted, but confirmed on chapter 209 by Mezu and Kuromaru, though he is in absolute denial.
  • Sour Supporter: Of Rikuo. He doesn't like/approves of him very much, but since he is loyal to Gyuuki who does, he "supports" Rikuo too. He also seems to have a bit of genuine respect towards Rikuo, saying that "he hides shrewdness behind his "good guy" facade".
  • Spider Limbs: He can grow large insect-like pincers from his back.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's fiercely loyal to Gyūki and is willing to do anything the latter requests

A tengu who has followed Nurarihyon for 400 years and has become one of the advisers of the Nura Clan. He's married to the beautiful Nuregarasu and is the father of the Sanbagarasu.

  • Bird People: He's a humanoid bird. He stands out because other Tengu in the series, including his own family, look completely human.
  • Henpecked Husband: His wife is supposed to be his assistant while he's their tengu group leader, but their only interaction shows she's the dominant one in the relationship and he's helpless when facing her anger.
"Everytime I go home, I feel I shrink a little."

  • Mayfly–December Romance: Since Yohime wasn't a youkai, her husband Nurarihyon has lived on for centuries after her death.
  • Posthumous Character: She lived 400 years ago, and since she's not a youkai, it's pretty obvious she's long dead by the beginning of the series. We only see her in flashbacks.

She attends Ukiyoe Middle School in the guise of a human, though her disguise isn't perfect since her eyes are slit-like pupils and she has small scale-like markings under her eyes and on her arms. She frequently visits Shirohebi and provides him with food.

  • Animal Eyes: Snake eyes.
  • Auntie Pennybags: Her family of traders is really wealthy because of their snake god ancestry and she's nice enough as to invite Rikuo to a drive home in her limo.

  • Cute Monster Girl: As the descendant of a snake god, she has snake features like scales all over her body and snake eyes, but she still looks cute.
  • Mystical White Hair: As with her snake eyes, her white hair is another sign that her blood is not entirely human.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted.
  • Shrinking Violet: Due to her heritage, she kept to herself and tried not to stand out among her human peers. After meeting Rikuo, whose blood is also mixed, she becomes more confident.
