You make mistakes... but... because of those mistakes... you get the strength to stand up to them... that's why I think you are truly strong.

The former heiress of the Hyuga clan, later known as the "Byakugan Princess", she would eventually become the wife of Naruto Uzumaki, the mother of Boruto and Himawari Uzumaki, and adoptive mother of Kawaki. At first, she played the Shrinking Violet role of the main cast, being completely weak and non-confrontational. Perhaps her most notable trait is her huge crush on Naruto, who is completely oblivious about it. However, it's this admiration that spurs her on to become stronger.

Hinata was born into the head family of the Hyuga clan and was expected to one day take it over. Since she started out extremely weak, this did not sit well with many others (namely Neji and her own father, Hiashi, though other extremely complicated reasons made it even worse for her). With the involvement of Kurenai and the aforementioned admiration of Naruto, she gradually develops as a warrior, becoming more confident.

Hinata, like all members of the Hyuga clan, has the kekkai genkai known as the Byakugan, characterized by the Prophet Eyes of its owners. It grants the user nearly-360-degree vision, as well as the ability to sense the flow of chakra in the human body. Hinata uses the Gentle Fist style of martial arts, a special combat style designed to take advantage of the Byakugan's unique abilities.

In Part II, she goes out with Team Kakashi to search for Sasuke or Itachi, but that ends in failure when Itachi dies and Tobi takes Sasuke away. In Pain's invasion, she intervenes to save Naruto from Pain and finally tells him that she loves him. Pain defeats her and nearly kills her, triggering Naruto going into six-tailed mode, but she survives with Sakura's help. When the Shinobi Alliance marches against Madara, she is placed in the Second Division alongside her cousin Neji, Karui, and Kurotsuchi.

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Hinata's popularity and importance in the story increased significantly: she was able to snap Naruto out of his Heroic BSoD after the tragic death of her cousin Neji and inspires him to fight on. Later she and Naruto become the main stars of the Canon movie The Last: Naruto the Movie, where their love for each other is fully explored and finally realized, ending with them marrying and having two beautiful children, Boruto and Himawari Uzumaki. She appears again as a loving and dedicated mother in her son's series, Boruto, and its movie version. As the series goes on, she becomes the adoptive mother of Kawaki after Naruto takes him in.

Her hobby is pressing flowers.
Favorite phrase: "self-confidence"

    A-D
  • Adaptation Dye-Job:
    • In the manga, everyone in the Hyuga clan has large pupil-less white eyesnote , which are depicted as pale lavender in the anime.
    • Her hair color is inconsistent. The official Viz translation of Chapter 39 describes her as a brunette. Kishimoto's official artwork, and the official colour manga, depicts her with indigo hair. The databooks describe her as having raven-black hair. The original anime and Shippuden depict her with dark blue hair. The Last, Boruto: Naruto the Movie, and the Boruto anime depict her with midnight blue hair, but, depending on the lighting, it can also look raven-black.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the anime filler arcs, she was given more screen time during battle and is seen winning battles. The four panels in Chapter 437 that showed her entering a brief fight with Pain while using her Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists before losing to him was extended considerably in the anime, having her actually spar with Pain and have her knocked down repeately, only to get up again.
  • Adrenaline Makeover: The changes in her design, from childhood to teens to young adulthood, easily fit. In Part I, she has short hair and very baggy clothes. In Part II, she lets her hair grow and while her clothes don't show skin, they cannot hide her growing curves. Finally, in The Last, her hair reaches her hips and she ditches the baggy coat/pants combo in favor of a sleeveless sweater, short shorts, and even Zettai Ryouiki.
  • Alliterative Family: She and her family members have names that start with the letter "H". Like her father, Hiashi and her sister, Hanabi. Later, as Hinata Uzumaki, she shares her initials with her daughter, Himawari Uzumaki.
  • Alliterative Name: Hinata Hyuga. Later Subverted when she marries Naruto and takes on his last name for herself.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Hinata is not fond of competition and fighting (though she will if pushed), and is shown to be incredibly empathetic thanks to her upbringing. Neji's troubled soul was all but clear to her, and she feels sadness in the fact that she cannot help him. In fact, she was one of the first people to identify with Naruto's painful childhood and desire to be acknowledged. She has admired him for it since childhood, which eventually paved the path to love. This is one of the many reasons that make her and Naruto Birds of a Feather, despite their different personalities.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: She felt like this because she was stripped of her birthright as heiress to the Hyuga clan.
  • Almighty Mom: She's definitely this in the Boruto anime. Her angry outbursts can surprise both her husband and their son when they are loudly fooling around too much or fighting with each other.
  • And I Must Scream: When she's caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Hinata is unable to move thanks to the genjutsu and can only mentally call out for Naruto as she's enveloped in the roots of the World Tree. It's not clear if this is unique to her or if she was just highlighted as an example.
  • Animal Battle Aura: Hinata's signature technique, the Twin Lion Fists, create phantom guardian lions around Hinata's hands enhancing the effects of her Gentle Fist techniques with greater range and Energy Absorption capabilities.
  • Animal Motifs: Hinata has been associated with lions (or lionesses) after her fight with Pain. Lions are seen as symbols of bravery and protection. Throughout the series, Hinata stood up for her beliefs, fearlessly faced her foes, and has displayed her willingness to protect her loved ones.
  • Apology Gift: In The Last, during her time in Toneri's castle, under the guise of knitting one for Toneri, she knits another scarf for Naruto to replace the one that got destroyed earlier, to reaffirm her love for him, and most significantly, to apologize to him for hurting his feelings by pretending to reject his first love confession.
  • Ascended Extra: In the anime, where she frequently stars in filler arcs. Later Kishimoto stated that she ascended to "heroine" status by the end of the manga. Taken to its logical conclusion in The Last where she is the main female lead.
  • Aura Vision: The Byakugan's main ability is to see chakra, inside and out of the body.
  • Babies Ever After: She and Naruto have a son named Boruto and a daughter named Himawari.
  • Badass Adorable: She's the resident Nice Girl and Shrinking Violet, who's also a certified Lady of War.
  • Badass Family: Hinata belongs to the Hyuga clan, which produces such badasses such as Hiashi, Neji, and eventually her. She later marries Naruto who later becomes the Seventh Hokage of Konoha, and the two of them start a family together, their first child being Boruto and their second child being Himawari.
  • Battle Couple: With Naruto in The Last. They properly confess their love for one another while fighting Toneri.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The Last reveals that this is the reason she was so inspired by Naruto. When she was little, three bullies picked on her because of her Byakugan. Naruto, without even knowing her, jumped in and stood up for her.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • Both Hinata and Sakura were teased with Naruto throughout the series. Hinata is the "Betty", and Sakura is the "Veronica" and both girls toy with the standard, classic traits for the roles. While Hinata is of a much higher social status (akin to a noblewoman), and her shy behavior throws Naruto for a loop, her kind and gentle nature and constant devotion to the clueless Naruto makes her fit the "Betty" role. At the end of the manga, "Betty" wins, and Hinata marries Naruto.
    • The "Archie" for Naruto's "Betty" (A Hero to His Hometown, All-Loving Hero, Nice Guy, and childhood friend) and Toneri's "Veronica" (the Big Bad, Smug Super, Yandere, and a mysterious figure) in The Last. Hinata has only ever loved Naruto, but she pretends to choose Toneri so that she could save Hanabi. In the end, she and Naruto become a couple and get married, while Toneri is left alone on the moon.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Hinata is one of the nicest and humblest ninjas anyone can meet. But, if you push her... Let's just say what she did to the Big Bad in The Last has an entry in the Nightmare Fuel page of that movie and leave it at that.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: The most silent of ninjas, mostly out of shyness, but isn't a pushover.
  • Be Yourself: This is one of her reasons for loving Naruto: he was always himself even in the face of overwhelming odds and situations, and he strove to become an even better version of himself.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: She and Naruto kiss in the final scene of The Last; it doubles as their Official Kiss.
  • Big Eater:
    • In the omake of Shippuden Episode 95. She wins a ramen eating contest, eating 46 pork roast ramen bowls. In half an hour. To better drive the point home, here's the other contestants: Shino (fainted ten minutes in at 18 bowls), Kiba (fainted twenty minutes in at 20 bowls), Sai (fainted at the twenty-ninth minute, number of eaten bowls unknown), Naruto (third, he ate 30 bowls), and Yamato (second, he ate 31 bowls).
    • Similarly, in Shippuden ending 34, which focuses on Teuchi and Ichiraku Ramen, there is a sequence of short scenes of various groups eating there. One of those scenes is Naruto and Hinata eating together. Naruto eventually gets sick from eating too much in the middle of his seventh bowl, while Hinata has twelve empty bowls next to her.
    • In Episode 18 of the Boruto anime, it's revealed that she holds the title of "the Legendary Queen of Gluttony" at Ichiraku Ramen, holding a record of 46 bowls in a single hour. For reference, she beats out both Choji and his father Choza.
  • Big Sister Instinct: There is one person who's higher up on Hinata's priority list than even Naruto: her younger sister Hanabi. This is undisputed in The Last, when she chooses to "reject" Naruto's first Love Confession and "agree" to marry Toneri so that she could have a better chance at saving Hanabi by herself, and then later on when she retrieves Hanabi's eyes from Toneri... by personally ripping them out of his eye sockets.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Naruto. Lee, Sakura, Kiba, and Shino, who are ardent supporters of the couple, argue that Naruto and Hinata share many similar qualities despite having different personalities and fighting styles. Both are considered failures by those around them, both suffer from the statuses they inherited at birth, and both seek acceptance and recognition. Additionally, they are both kind-hearted, determined, loyal, and insecure. According to the databooks and Konoha Hiden, both enjoy red bean soup and are passionate about plant preservation. Furthermore, their signature colors, orange and purple, share a common color "Red String of Fate" on the color wheel. Finally, both are highly empathetic, even though this trait is often looked down upon in their world, which is one of the reasons why they develop a deep friendship that eventually blossoms into love. Sakura and Tsunade's conversation in Sakura Hiden reveals that Naruto and Hinata's adaptable dynamic with one another is what makes their relationship work.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She sports this in Part I, and a slightly longer version in Naruto Gaiden and Boruto.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Zig-Zagged in The Last. She breaks Naruto's heart, not to save him but to save Hanabi. Nevertheless, she later apologizes to him for doing so. Naruto, of course, forgives her.
  • Breakout Character: According to Kishimoto, Hinata's the most popular female character of the series, exceeding even the main heroine Sakura, despite all his unsuccessful efforts to make the latter popular. In this 2010 Jump Festa interview, Kishimoto admitted that Hinata is more of a heroine than Sakura, and in this 2014 Fuji TV Kobayashi interview, he revealed that because Hinata's popularity kept growing on its own while Sakura was consistently unpopular, he started thinking about making Hinata the main heroine partway through the story, but ultimately he settled on gradually making her the heroine by the end of the manga. This also helped bring about The Last, where Hinata is the main female lead and is also revealed to be Naruto's First Love and One True Love.
  • Break the Cutie: Neji tries to do this to her during their fight in the Chunin Exams arc, but it doesn't work.
  • Bridal Carry: Naruto carries her this way a couple of times in the climax of The Last.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Downplayed with Naruto. Naruto is the near epitome of Determinator, Magnetic Hero, and The Heart—he's the one who usually brings someone else out of their brooding self-loathing attitude. However, during the moments that have even him reach the Despair Event Horizon, it has always been Hinata (the girl who was initially very self-deprecating of herself) who gives him the strength to gain back his confidence. Such moments include Hinata encouraging Naruto right before his fight against Neji in Chapter 98, and then Hinata slapping sense into Naruto when he almost gives in to Obito's Breaking Lecture following Neji's Heroic Sacrifice in Chapter 615.
  • Bully Magnet: She was picked on because the children thought that she thought of herself as superior to them because of her upbringing, when in reality, her family constantly made her feel inadequate. The Last reveals that she was also picked on in the Academy for having the Byakugan.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a well-endowed figure, especially after the Time Skip. Many of the other girls are envious of her figure, especially in Prologue to Road to Ninja where they all bathe together, and the sight of Hinata's chest causes Sakura to have A-Cup Angst.
  • Cain and Abel: Even though they're not actual siblings, she and Neji still fulfilled these roles at the beginning of the series, with Hinata being the Abel to Neji's Cain, before Neji did a Heel–Face Turn and became a big brother figure to her.
  • Call-Back:
    • Hinata once told Naruto when he was down on himself that she could see in his eyes that he is strong. Three years later Naruto tells her the same thing after he saves her from the White Zetsu.
    • "You said you wanted to become the best Ninja in your village and have everyone acknowledge you. Now, if someone who acknowledged you from the bottom of your heart appeared, wouldn't that someone become the most important person to you?" These were words Haku said to the then-rookie Naruto, and "that someone" is the one he has been searching for for years — only to realize in The Last that it was Hinata all along, as she has acknowledged, admired and loved him for the way he is since the very beginning. From then on, it becomes clear to him that Hinata is the person he's meant to protect and be with.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Regarding her feelings for Naruto, until she went to protect him from Pain. She also wants to cheer for him in his fight with Kiba in the Chunin Exam preliminaries, but can't because Kiba's her teammate, and doing so would upset him.
  • Character Development: Becomes more self-confident, even assertive, after the Time Skip.
  • Character Exaggeration: Anime fillers and the SD spinoff tend to exaggerate Hinata's character into an obsessive stalker. In comparison to the manga itself, she's a Downplayed version of the actual trope. Her shyness towards Naruto is also exaggerated to the point where she can barely talk to Naruto without stuttering or fainting. In the manga, although Hinata is still shy, she can have full conversations with Naruto without too much trouble. She drops both of these behaviors entirely in Part II.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She has admired and loved Naruto since she was a little girl, and as shown in a flashback in Chapter 538, she was the very first person to acknowledge Naruto for the way he is, even if Naruto himself didn't know that until he finally realizes he's in love with her in The Last. At the end of the movie, they get Happily Married and have two children.
  • The Chosen One: In The Last, it turns out she is the Byakugan Princess and can wield Hamura Otsutsuki's chakra which is the only thing that can destroy Toneri and his Tenseigan. Subverted in that she lacks the brute strength required to destroy the Tenseigan and fight Toneri on her own and can only fulfill her destiny by empowering and protecting Naruto.
  • The Clan: Hinata is born into the Hyuga clan. She later marries into the Uzumaki clan.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: Female version. Her outfits in Part I and Part II conceal her figure, so it isn't uncommon to think she's a bit plain or overweight. The non-canon movie Road To Ninja takes the chance to show her silhouette, and she's actually quite svelte. The Last hits a midpoint between the two, with her outfit being more flattering and form-fitting but not quite as revealing as the Road To Ninja version. After Naruto realizes he's in love with her in the movie, he teases her about this.
  • Close-Range Combatant: The fact that she primarily uses Taijutsu, specifically her clan’s Gentle Fist, makes her this.
  • Color Motif: Hinata is mostly represented by the color purple, to be more precise lavender or a very light purple, along with cream and sometimes white.
  • Combination Attack:
    • She and Neji can combine their Vacuum Wall Palm skill to double its power.
    • She also pulls one off with Ino by guiding her Mind Transfer with her Byakugan in the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc.
    • She combines her Eight Trigrams Twin Lions Crumbling Attack with Naruto's Rasengan in The Last.
  • The Confidant: Naruto sees a kindred spirit in Hinata, which allows him to let the mask slip in front of her and confess to her how he really feels about himself in Chapter 98: he only puts up a strong front so people wouldn't know about his embarrassment and frustration at his own ineptitude. Considering that almost everyone in Konoha is still avoiding him like the plague at this point, and even his own teammates, while starting to grow somewhat fond of him, still find him too annoying to be around a lot, let alone care about his problems, this is the only time Naruto ever reveals his deep thoughts to anyone. Not only does Hinata hear him out, but she also reassures him that he's truly strong because he never gives up in trying to overcome his failures. This is the foundation of their strong friendship and eventual romance.
  • The Cutie: In Part I, as she's a cute, sweet 12-year-old girl whose crush on Naruto makes her adorable, while her insecurities make her relatable.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Not too long after her third birthday, she was subjected to extensive training as the Hyuga clan's heiress, which left her little time for a normal childhood. Circumstances out of her control led to a strained relationship with her cousin Neji for nine years, even though he was supposed to protect her with his life. Her unwillingness to harm her younger sister Hanabi in a duel to determine the clan's heiress led her to be disinherited. Her family eventually disowned her and kicked her out, which led to her living with her sensei Kurenai for a while. She was picked on in the Academy for having the Byakugan. It's ultimately thanks to Naruto being in her life, and giving her the inspiration to persevere, that things got better.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Got two during Part II—once during the Invasion of Pain arc when she attempts to rescue Naruto from Pain and again during the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc. In both cases, they were temporary moments; in the former, her Disney Death served as the catalyst for Naruto's Despair Event Horizon, while in the latter she gives Naruto a Rousing Speech that pulls him out of despair. However, she quickly gets shunted back into the sidelines, along with everyone else in the Konoha 11, to bring the focus back onto the newly reformed Team 7.
    • Has one in the Grand Finale, The Last, where she is the main female lead and the main love interest, since the movie is the canonical bridge to the manga's epilogue, and is the tale of how she and Naruto fell in love.
  • D-Cup Distress: In Prologue to Road to Ninja, she is in the onsen... and is greatly embarrassed when her breasts keep floating up in the water.
  • Declaration of Protection: Part of her Love Confession to Naruto has her stating that she'll protect him.
  • Deliberately Distressed Damsel: The real reason why she "agrees" to marry Toneri is so that she can find intel on the Tenseigan and save Hanabi.
  • Demoted to Extra: Gets only a passing mention in Naruto Gaiden.
  • Designated Victim: Gets kidnapped a few times in Fillers and once manages to defeat her abductors after they had taken Naruto, Kiba and Shino captive when they tried to save her.
  • Deuteragonist: Gets promoted to this role in The Last.
  • Devoted to You: Ever since they were children, Naruto has been the most precious person to Hinata and the one who has always inspired her to keep going and become stronger, not caring at all that everyone else in the village hated him. When she confessed her love for him, she outright told Naruto she is Not Afraid to Die for him.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Naruto confessing that he's in love with her was something she never expected.
  • Doting Parent: To her son and daughter.
  • Dude Magnet: Chapter 102 reveals that Neji thought she was cute when they first met, when he was 4 and she was 3, and he's implied to have a crush on her in the non-canon spin-off Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth. In The Last, both Toneri and Naruto consider her to be very beautiful. In the first Boruto novel, The New Leaves Soaring Through the Blue Sky!, it's revealed that Boruto's friends often tell him that she's very beautiful.

    E-L
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Naruto finally realizes he's in love with her and confesses to her in The Last, but the road was long and hard.
  • Education Mama: According to the Boruto anime, she is this towards her son.
  • Elemental Punch: Of the Pure Energy variety, her Twin Lion Fists technique.
  • Energy Absorption: The Twin Lion Fists are energy eating phantom lions.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Byakugan users have pupil-less white eyes.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: She grew out her hair after the Time Skip, which symbolized her maturity and newfound confidence and assertiveness.
  • Eyes Always Averted: She had this issue in Part I, but she outgrew it by the Invasion of Pain arc.
  • Family Theme Naming: In addition to her clan's sun theme naming. Hinata also shares a syllable with her sister, Hanabi, as well as her husband, Naruto.
  • Fan of Underdog: Out of all the kids, she is the only one who always admired Naruto since childhood.
Hinata: In my eyes, you're a proud failure! When I look at you, I get an intense feeling in my heart. Because you are not perfect... Because you fail... you have the strength to get back up... Because I believe that's what true strength is...
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Hinata is a very talented cook.
  • First Girl After All: She was introduced in the Chunin Exams arc (except in the anime, where she had a cameo in episode 1), thus seemingly making Sakura the First Girl. However, The Last reveals that Hinata met Naruto on a snowy day when they were children, not too long before they enrolled in the Academy, before he met Sakura.
  • First Girl Wins: Hinata is the girl who has known, loved, and believed in Naruto the longest. Naruto realizes his love for her in The Last, and they're married with two children in the epilogue.
  • First Love: She's this for Naruto. The Tagline for The Last even outright confirms this, as it states "The last story is the First Love." As it goes, she's also Naruto's One True Love, and the one he gets Happily Married to in the end.
  • Flowers of Femininity: In The Last and Konoha Hiden, for her and Naruto's wedding, Hinata wears a white flower in her hair during the ceremony, and then two red flowers in her hair during the reception.
  • Flower Motifs: In the fourth databook, Hinata's name is referred to as a pure white lily. The same flowers were put on Neji's grave during his funeral in the penultimate chapter.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: After the Time Skip, her chest growth can't be missed, despite wearing a loose jacket.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Befitting her status as a Shrinking Violet and an Ojou, Hinata speaks thorough keigo and uses honorifics for everyone.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic: Introverted, cooperative, meticulous and gentle.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Gives one to Naruto in Chapter 615, when he almost crosses the Despair Event Horizon after Neji's death and Obito's Breaking Speech seemed to take an effect on him.
  • Girly Bruiser: She's very feminine and quiet, but from Part II onward she's a great and strong-willed fighter.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She's a polite, shy, and soft-spoken Proper Lady, and heiress of the Hyuga clan, and in The Last she's shown knitting a scarf for Naruto. She's also a Girly Bruiser who doesn't mind getting messy, is a Big Eater, and prefers wearing baggy clothing. Although she has long hair in Part II and The Last, she has short hair more often, as shown in Part I, Naruto Gaiden, and the sequel Boruto.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: In her fight with Neji during the Chunin Exams, he says "You really are a naive and spoiled child of the Main House" for attempting to fight him, the prodigy of the Hyuga clan. However, she turns the tables on him by saying that he is the one fighting fate. Naturally, this nearly gets her killed.
  • Good Parents: Hinata becomes a kind and loving mother to her and Naruto's children, Boruto and Himawari.
  • Go Through Me: Jumped to Naruto's defense when he was pinned down by Pain despite knowing that it would almost certainly get her killed. She nearly got killed as a result.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She's The Ojou and predominantly wears purple/lavender clothing.
  • Grew a Spine: Ever since her fight against Neji in Part I, she becomes very willing to face powerful foes, and from Part II onward, she becomes willing to fight and even die for the ones she loves, especially Naruto.
  • Grow Old with Me: Naruto's proposal to her at the end of The Last, after he finally realizes he's in love with her.
Naruto: Hinata... do you remember that lesson in class? The one with, "If the end of the world came, who would you spend your last day with?" I couldn't write anyone's name down. I didn't know my parents, and I didn't have any friends... But now, I know exactly whom I'd choose. I want to be with you. Now and forever, until I die... I want to be with you, Hinata!
  • Guile Heroine: While not to the extent of Shikamaru or Shino, she uses her wits from time to time. In The Last, she forms a plan to save Hanabi and destroy the Tenseigan that succeeds through adaptation and improvisation.
  • Hand Blast: The Empty Palm technique which is a palm thrust which launches a long ranged wave of invisible chakra.
  • Happily Married: Her marriage to Naruto is a happy and fruitful one. An official illustration depicting her present family has her blush and smile at her husband's side.
  • Heal the Cutie: Hinata was abused by her harsh father and the rest of her family from childhood, and she lost her rightful position as the heiress to the Hyuga clan because they mistook her kind, gentle nature for weakness. Her cousin Neji, who was supposed to protect her with his life, grew up to hate her for nine years, and he ends up brutally attacking her (both physically and verbally), to the point of almost killing her, in the Chunin Exams preliminaries. Her familial shame resulted in a huge inferiority complex and crippling shyness, which tragically persisted up until she met Naruto when they were children. Seeing Naruto's enduring optimism and determination inspired her to keep trying, and eventually she gains the respect of her family. Naruto himself realizes he's in love with her in The Last, and the two earn their happy ending together.
  • The Heart: Hinata can be considered this for the Hyuga clan and Team 8, even after she Took a Level in Badass in Part II. This is one of the reasons why she is very popular with the fanbase.
  • Heiress To The Dojo: Formerly this. She was initially slated to be the heiress of the Hyuga clan until she refused to harm her younger sister Hanabi in a duel, which led to her defeat and resulted in her being passed over in favor of Hanabi.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Due to her insecurities and inferiority complex, she can get really down on herself, as shown in Chapter 559, or when she calls herself "selfish" for risking her life in an attempt to save Naruto from Pain, or during The Last when she beats herself for not doing enough to save her younger sister Hanabi. Kiba, Shino, Neji (post-Character Development), and especially Naruto are always quick to reassure her.
  • Hidden Buxom: She was busty even as a 12-year-old, as shown by the clothes she wore for the third part of the Chunin Exams and her midnight dance on a pond in the anime Filler. However, she wears a baggy coat to hide it, befitting her shy personality. It's most noticeable when Sakura takes off the coat to heal her during the end of Naruto's fight with Pain. She's been the most...gifted of her peers for a long time. In the Prologue to Road to Ninja, she tries to hide them in the bathhouse because they keep floating and the other girls envy her. Albeit in the Boruto series she somehow manages to look no more buxom than Sakura, so far with no real explanation. A montage of scenes in a Boruto episode that includes a shot of how she looked in the movie The Last shows her as busty as before, implying that somehow she is hiding this in the Boruto series.
  • Hidden Depths: The Last shows she is capable of playing speed chess.
  • Hime Cut: Has blunt bangs, shoulder length sidelocks, and waist-length straight hair in Part II, befitting her newfound confidence and assertiveness. In The Last, she wears the same hairstyle with bra strap length sidelocks and hip-length straight hair. By Boruto, it's back into a straight bob.
  • Holding Hands: She stated numerous times that it's her goal to catch up to Naruto and be able to hold his hand. She finally achieved it after she snapped him out of his Heroic BSoD following Neji's death.
  • Honey Trap: Hinata infiltrates Toneri's castle to rescue Hanabi by "agreeing" to marry him and playing along as his new bride.
  • Hope Bringer: She is this to Naruto during some of the darkest moments of his life in the main series.
  • Hopeless Suitor: In the first act of The Last, she thinks that she will forever be this to Naruto. Only to be proven dead wrong in the second act, much to her disbelief, and later, joy.
  • Hot Consort: Becomes this to her husband, Naruto, when he becomes the Seventh Hokage.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Along with being Hot-Blooded and Stripperiffic in the alternate universe of the non-canon movie Road To Ninja.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Her reaction to Naruto's first Love Confession in The Last, especially since earlier she thought she had lost her chance to be with him.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Hinata has always wanted to be loved and acknowledged by her family, who were abusive to her to the point where they stripped her of her rightful birthright as heiress to the Hyuga clan because they perceived her kind, gentle nature for weakness and even disowned her for a time, during which she had to live with her sensei Kurenai.
  • Image Song: "Fuyu no Owari ni" ("At the End of Winter"), performed in character by Nana Mizuki to promote The Last.
  • Impostor Forgot One Detail: When she's impersonated in fillers, the forgotten detail is usually how she acts around Naruto.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Her poor combat ability caused her father to strip her of her birthright as the heiress to the clan's leadership and give it to her younger sister instead.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Hinata nearly avoids this. She acquires exponential damage to her body's chakra system and heart from facing Neji in the preliminaries. She still feels the affects of such a strain on her body that she breaks out in a violent coughing fit during the fight between Neji and Naruto a month later and subsequently passes out.
  • Insecure Love Interest: She has never seen herself as good enough for Naruto, even calling her doomed rescue from Pain an act of her selfishness.
  • Instant Expert: In The Last, after inheriting her ancestor Hamura Otsutsuki's chakra, she uses the Chakra Transfer Technique to share her chakra with Naruto and completely replenish his reserves immediately with no trouble. This is especially impressive considering it took Sakura, an experienced medical ninja, three days to heal Naruto before collapsing from exhaustion afterwards.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In The Last, when Hinata mistakes Naruto's green scarf as a gift from another womannote , she tearfully wishes him well with the supposed owner of that scarf and decides to stop pursuing him. This is ultimately why, when Naruto realizes he's in love with her and starts being incredibly unsubtle with his feelings, she became, ironically, Oblivious to Love.
  • Japanese Politeness: In a world of characters who typically do not bother with proper honorifics, Hinata is one of the few who addresses everyone properly and politely.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: In The Last, she destroys Toneri's Tenseigan all while wearing a fine black dress.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: She and Naruto have a traditional Japanese wedding complete with multiple wedding kimonos.
  • Lady and Knight: Hinata is the Lady (of the Hyuga clan, with a gentle nature, especially towards Naruto) to Naruto's Knight (a ninja with unyielding passion to those he loves, Hinata in particular) of a good variant.
  • Lady of War: Hinata becomes this in Part II. Her fighting style is perfect for this, since it's based less on brute strength and more on swiftness, chakra blocking, speed, and exploiting the enemy's weakness. Combine this with her long flowing hair and you get a pretty graceful female fighter. She finally achieves this status in the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc, where she watches Neji's back, saves Naruto a few times against the Ten-Tails, and masters the Sixty-Four Palms and combines it with her Twin Lion Fists. This continues on into The Last, where she personally retrieves Hanabi's lost eyes by ripping them out of the eyesockets of the villain who stole them and later becomes Naruto's Battle Couple partner as they seal away the Big Bad together.
  • Laugh of Love: There are at least two instances where Hinata giggled after her crush and, eventually, her lover Naruto said something foolish. The first time was at the end of the first part of the Chunin Exams. The second time was in The Last, while the two of them were investigating an abandoned shinobi village.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: In some fillers but Subverted when she faces Pain to protect Naruto (although not in the anime version).
  • Light Is Good: With her bright purple/lavender and cream/white color clothing and her kind and gentle nature, she definitely counts as this, though this made her a outcast in her hardcore home until the Chunin Exams arc in Part I.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: She manages to bear similarities to both of Naruto's parents, Minato and Kushina:
    • She matches Minato in personality: Both are quiet nice ninja who were the very first people to acknowledge their boisterous counterpart, and who have always loved and admired their boisterous counterpart since they were children.
    • She and Kushina both went through a lot of the same life events and share certain hobbies: Both have unique hair colors that match their respective personalities. Both were kidnapped by Kumo ninja when they were younger because of the powers they possessed. Both fell in love with their husbands because their husbands are good men who are attracted to their strength, consider them very beautiful partly because of their long flowing hair, love their home cooking, and changed them for the better. Both are not afraid to die to protect Naruto because of their love for him. Both were bullied as children because of a physical feature of theirs — Kushina's round face and red hair; Hinata's Byakugan eyes. Both enjoy knitting scarves. Both fell in love with their husbands via Rescue Romance, and both rescue scenarios utilized the Red String of Fate. Both passed down their round face and eye shape to their sons. Finally, both are considered really scary by their sons when they get mad.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: She saved Naruto from his own doubts and even moments when he was on the brink of despair. Considering what he has to go through on a daily basis, it's not surprising that she's his rock.
    • Naruto's emotional dependency on Hinata first became apparent during the Invasion of Pain arc. Along with still reeling from his master Jiraiya's death, Naruto has just seen his village completely demolished, confirmed that his sensei Kakashi is dead, and just saw his frog-sensei get killed in front of him, and yet he still maintains control of his emotions. But as soon as he is Forced to Watch Pain almost fatally stab Hinata with one of his chakra rods, right after she sincerely confessed her love to him—which was the first time he ever heard anybody say that to him genuinely—Naruto crosses the Despair Event Horizon, completely loses his will to live, and nearly releases the Nine-Tails.
Naruto: When Pain struck Hinata I was so mad, so full of rage, my heart instantly connected with the Kyuubi's will.
    • If one were to keep a close eye on their interactions throughout the series, Naruto seems calmer around Hinata and more open about his insecurities with her than with anybody else, as if being with her helps him be at peace with all the pain he's been through in his life.
    • In The Last, after Hinata "rejects" Naruto (actually a ruse so that she could have a better chance of rescuing her younger sister Hanabi and save the earth), Naruto, who didn't know about her plan, crosses the Despair Event Horizon so badly that he falls into a deep depression for four days — three of which he spends in an Angst Coma — and comes very close to giving up on everything.
    • This quote from Sakura Hiden explicitly states just how important Hinata is to Naruto:
"Throughout that mission, Naruto realized that Hinata's being was irreplaceable and essential to him."
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Emphasized in her flashback in Shippuden, when they show several other children coming to the conclusion that she's looking down on them.
  • Love Confession:
  • Love Floats: In the final scene of The Last, she and Naruto have The Big Damn Kiss while floating in mid-air.
  • Love Redeems: In her aforementioned Love Confession to Naruto, she says that his smile and determination has changed her for the better.
  • Luminescent Blush: Happens a lot when she's around Naruto, mostly in Part I. In the fillers, sometimes her whole face lights up.

    M-R
  • Made of Iron:
    • She's tough enough to take multiple attacks from Neji, even without having access to her chakra, and finally passes out only because of the immense stress to her heart.
    • Happens again in her brief fight with Pain, taking an attack by someone who's already single-handedly leveled the whole village and killed multiple high-level ninja and then getting stabbed through the chest, yet she survives it. The anime takes it further, where she gets repeatedly beaten down by Pain's attacks but manages to keep getting back up until she's finally impaled—and she still survives long enough to get treated by Sakura.
  • Magical Eye: The Byakugan, a genetically inherited ability giving incredibly enhanced eyesight.
  • Martial Medic: Gives Naruto an emergency bone-setting with the Gentle Fist. She is also one of the only non-medical ninja shown to sensibly carry a first-aid kit and a secret healing ointment from her clan. In the anime, she is also capable of using the Healing Hands of a medic ninja.
  • Martial Pacifist: Dislikes fighting, but is willing to go as far as she has to if she has no other choice. Sadly, this is why, even after Hiashi openly acknowledged that she's gotten stronger and applauded her for trying to fight Pain, he still deems her unfit to be a leader in the Fourth Shinobi World War.
  • Meaningful Name: Her means sunny place/towards the sun, a fitting name for someone who manages to help Naruto during some of the darkest moments of his life.
  • Memento MacGuffin: She met Naruto when she was a little girl, when he protected her from bullies. They beat him and ripped his red scarf. Hinata kept the red scarf as a memento of her first meeting with him. Said scarf is an important plot item in The Last.
  • Mindlink Mates: With Naruto in Chapter 677. When Hinata gets caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, she mentally calls out to Naruto in despair. Naruto hears her and immediately tries to rush to her aid.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother is never seen nor mentioned in the manga, because she never really had anything substantial to do with the plot. She hasn't even been named. However, her mother briefly appears as an addition to the anime in a family portrait during a flashback while she's fighting Pain, and Hinata cites her as the source of her kindness. She is not seen in the present day either, which strongly indicates that she passed away, given the fact she was not present at Hinata's wedding, her home life lacks the compassionate presence of a mother to alleviate her tribulations, and her husband has the hardened disposition of a widower.
  • Modest Royalty: Eldest daughter and former heiress of the Hyuga clan and was later given the title of Byakugan Princess, yet outside of her family she isn't treated differently from her peers, and she's the most modest looking out of the girls. Even when she marries Naruto and basically becomes the First Lady of Konoha, she's still as modest as always.
  • Morality Pet:
    • Hinata is probably the only person in the series that Sakura isn't cynical or easily angry towards, treating her like a surrogate younger sister.
    • In the filler arcs, Hinata can be this to Neji, post-Character Development.
  • Ms. Fanservice:
    • During a Filler episode of Part I, Naruto caught a glimpse of Hinata, naked, while she was dancing in the middle of a river, and the camera gives us a Sexy Silhouette of her as she does so. In actuality, she was practicing a new jutsu, and Naruto never realized who it was.
    • Later, during the Prologue to Road to Ninja special, Hinata was shown in the hot springs where she was making an effort to keep her breasts from floating up from the bath water, making the other girls (especially Sakura) jealous. During the Road to Sakura special, Hinata reluctantly wore a (very) tight, red Qipao dress. Her Alternate Self in the non-canon movie Road To Ninja fits this trope, all the way through wearing short shorts and a top that shows her cleavage and bares her midriff.
    • Lastly, there was one filler episode, a Team 8 flashback, where the audience finally got to see Hinata and Kurenai in the Hot Springs. Strangely enough, this episode actually had a shot of Hinata scarcely covered in a Modesty Towel.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: When she's next to her two children in Boruto: Naruto the Movie, she definitely gives more of a young-adult sister vibe than a fully matured woman.
  • Mundane Utility: When her boyfriend Naruto freaks out over an expensive menu during their first official date, upon seeing that he's down on cash with her Byakugan, she proposes a cheaper alternative (Ichiraku Ramen) to spare him embarrassment.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In The Last, the look in her eyes as she watches Naruto fall to earth after she "rejected" him just screams this.
  • Nerves of Steel: When the push comes to shove, she's utterly fearless, as shown as early as the Chunin Exams where she refutes her cousin Neji, and later when she faces against Pain, despite knowing she might not make it out alive, she remains calm and composed. Finally in the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc, where despite her grief from Neji's sacrifice, she musters enough courage to give the despairing Naruto a Rousing Speech, that gets him back in the fight.
  • Nice Girl: Hinata Hyuga is well-known for her exceptional kindness and gentle nature. Despite being almost killed by her own cousin, Neji, she forgives him and never holds a grudge. Hinata's genuine personality makes her stand out from the other characters in the series, as she never seems pretentious or overly aggressive, even in the most difficult situations. She treats others with respect and compassion and is never demanding or scary unless there is a valid reason. Out of all the girls that Naruto has met, Hinata is the sweetest-tempered, most honest, most open-minded, and most patient with him, despite his flaws. She genuinely cares about him and supports him throughout his struggles, even when others doubt him (particularly Tsunderes like Ino and especially Sakura). Her kindness has earned her the admiration of the creators of the series, who appreciate her strength, compassion, and unwavering commitment to doing what is right, no matter the cost.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Is on the receiving end of one with Neji during the Chunin Exams to the extent that several jōnin had to step in and restrain him from killing her outright. She's still not fully healed a month later.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Part of her character arc has her willingly facing foes far above her league without any hint of fear, completely willing to die for the sake of her loved ones, like the time with Pain, and again against Obito where she was ready to take the bullet for Naruto, until Neji stepped in to shield the both of them.
  • Oblivious to Love: Naruto finally realizes he's in love with her in The Last, but she doesn't notice it at all until he spits it out. What makes this painfully ironic is that Naruto couldn't comprehend both Hinata's feelings and his own as romantic for years, even after she spat it out to him in the Invasion of Pain arc. Then, when he starts being incredibly unsubtle with his feelings, she doesn't realize it until a Freudian Slip during a conversation between them reveals that he's in love with her.
  • Official Couple: She and Naruto finally become a couple in The Last and get married only a few months later. The epilogue shows them with two kids, a son and a daughter.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Sends one of the 10 Tails divisions reeling with 8 Trigrams 64 Palms, then summons up her Twin Lion Fists and declares she's going to combine them with the 64-Palms. Sadly we don't get to actually see her do this combination but given she is fine later she apparently won.
  • Ojou: Hinata is the daughter of one of the four noble clans of Hidden Leaf Village. She was raised to be proper and reserved.
  • One True Love: Naruto has spent almost his entire life searching for the one person who would love him unconditionally, in spite of everything that has and will transpire in his life, along with all of his flaws, like his parents would have if they lived beyond his birth. However, since he never understood the romantic implications of such a relationship, he's been blind to the fact that the person he's been searching for has been right in front of him all this time: Hinata, the girl who has admired, acknowledged and loved him for the way he is since the day they first met as children. It takes him until The Last to finally realize who the precious person he wants to protect and be with is.
    • Confirmed by Kishimoto in this 2015 New York Comic Con interview:
Masashi Kishimoto: I think what made me realize it was partly because, if you really look back and think about it, Hinata always supported and acknowledged Naruto, even before Master Iruka. She had the ability to see beyond his reputation and see the true person inside. I think I started realizing that they were meant to be.
  • Onee-sama: Her younger sister Hanabi adores her for her kindness and strength, and the two episodes that focus on their relationship even use the trope name.
  • Opposites Attract: Hinata is a shy Proper Lady whose fighting style is precise and accurate, and she is in love with the Hot-Blooded boisterous Naruto whose fighting style is unorthodox and full of surprises, and he realizes he's in love with her too. Even more so with their clothing in Part II: Orange and Black for Naruto, Lavender and White for Hinata, like yin and yang, although Naruto is actually the yang (light) to Hinata's yin (dark).
  • Out-of-Character Moment: In the Bikochu Filler arc, there was a Running Gag of Naruto being unable to differentiate insects. This even gets on Hinata's nerves. This was the only moment where Hinata ever raises her voice at Naruto.
  • Panthera Awesome: Both her Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists and its upgraded version, her Eight Trigrams Twin Lions Crumbling Attack.
  • Parents Know Their Children: Downplayed. When her thirteen year old self meets a time traveling Boruto, she acts a lot more at ease than her usual self, but give no indication that she knows who he is.
  • Patient Childhood Love Interest: She has been carrying the torch for Naruto that goes all the way back to their childhood days and lasts the duration of the whole series. True to the trope, instead of being upfront, she takes it slowly, by cultivating a strong friendship with him, eventually culminating in The Last where her patience is finally rewarded, as he realizes his feelings for her and reciprocates her love, and the two become a couple.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: She is put in a black Gothic inspired one for her wedding to Toneri after being turned into one of his puppets; upon being freed from the mind-control by Naruto, she turns this into a Battle Ballgown.
  • Plucky Girl: She is one of the first to adopt Naruto's ninja way after all:
    • This is the defining trait of her fight against Neji. She hyperventilates and almost breaks before the fight even begins due to Neji's Breaking Speech, but after Naruto helps her recover by constantly shouting out words of encouragement (and being the only one to do so), she does not give up ever. Even when she loses, she manages to get the last word in, and she stands her ground when Neji tries to kill her right then and there.
    • She reaffirms it when she goes against Pain fully knowing that she might not make it, since she wants to not only tell Naruto that she loves him, but to tell him that it's thanks to him that she's reached the place she is now.
  • The Power of Love: The single presence of Naruto can literally change her from a Shrinking Violet to a Lady of War.
  • Power of Trust: She and Naruto have placed a great amount of trust in each other since the Chunin Exams arc.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: She gives one to Toneri in The Last, right before she reclaims Hanabi's eyes.
Hinata: I'm taking Hanabi's eyes back.
  • Pressure Point: The Gentle Fist style her clan uses focuses on striking these very quickly, the effects being able to shut down the flow of chakra and cause organ failure.
  • Pretty in Mink: Wears a fur coat in Part I.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: She's the eldest princess of the Hyuga clan. The Last even gives her the title Byakugan Princess.
  • Previously Overlooked Paramour: Naruto is initially so emotionally stunted by his upbringing in the village that resulted from his parents' deaths and the way the majority of the villagers treated him because of Kurama that he is completely unable to tell the difference between romantic love and the kind of 'love' one would feel for a favorite treat (such as ramen). And as a result, he proves completely oblivious to how Hinata is just about the only one who genuinely likes (and later loves) him for exactly as he is even back when they were both little kids (and the fact that he also ends up developing a shallow crush on Sakura as a result of him coming to view her as a prize to be won in his rivalry against Sasuke (whom Sakura herself likes) certainly doesn't help either). It isn't until long after he's matured and later realized the true nature of different types of love (among other things) that he finally becomes aware of how Hinata had always been willing and able to give him the love and attention he'd wanted for so long even when no one else would. And from there, the two eventually manage to become an official couple
  • Prophet Eyes: Inherent to all members of the Hyuga clan.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Disregarding how Hinata prefers to wear purple in Part II, The Last reveals that Hinata, like Toneri, possesses Hamura's chakra as well, and this chakra is colored purple.
  • The Quiet One: Hinata was the only female example in the manga in Part I, until Konan appeared in Part II.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: She has been taught the Sixty-Four Palms which is more like rapid fire Finger Pokes of Doom.
  • Red Baron: She is given the title of "Hyuga Heiress" or "Hyuga Princess" throughout the Naruto and Boruto manga, and then the "Byakugan Princess" as of The Last. Also Played for Laughs in the Boruto anime, where she is given the title of "Legendary Queen of Gluttony" at Ichiraku Ramen.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Sakura's Red. Whereas Hinata is a Shy Blue Haired Nice Girl who can barely talk to Naruto until Part II, Sakura is a Hot-Blooded rose-haired Tsundere who is ready to inflict unnecessary damage on Naruto. By Part II, even their fighting styles became total opposites to each other's: they both use chakra, but Sakura is using it to increase the strength of her punches to monstrous levels, making her a Cute Bruiser, whereas Hinata is using the Pressure Point-based Gentle Fist-style of the Hyuga clan, making her a Lady of War. Furthermore, as a result of their respective personalities and body figures, Sakura has A-Cup Angst whereas Hinata is hiding her buxom figure in baggy clothes. Also, according to the anime, Sakura is a Lethal Chef whereas Hinata is a supreme one.
  • Red String of Fate: Over the course of The Last, she knits three red scarves to give to Naruto and they are used as a symbolic representation of the trope name. It also serves as a Call-Back and Meaningful Echo to the story of how Naruto's own parents fell in love, indicating that her fate is tied to Naruto's in the same way.
  • Repeat What You Just Said: To Naruto in The Last after he accidentally reveals that he's in love with her.
  • Repetitive Name: Hinata's given name is an Alternate Character Reading for the kanji her surname is composed of, thus making "Hinata Hyuga (日向ヒナタ)" a heteronym for "Hinata Hinata".
  • Rescue Romance: The anime reveals that her long-standing admiration of Naruto began when he tried to protect her from three bullies. This turns her "fight" against Pain into a Meaningful Echo, with their roles reversed. The Last officially confirms that this is how Naruto and Hinata met, albeit with a different place and different time.
  • Returning the Handkerchief: In The Last, she does this with a handmade red scarf.
  • Rousing Speech: She gives one to Naruto before he duels Neji and then a very impressive one during his fight against Obito and Madara.
Hinata: Neji just said... that your life is not just your own anymore… Do you understand what he meant? Your words and desire to not let your comrades die... Neither of them are lies! What inspired Neji and carried him this far were those very principles! It's not just you, Naruto… we all hold those same words and feelings within our hearts. They're what bind our lives together and make us comrades. If we all give up and discard those words and feelings now, Neji's sacrifice will have been for nothing... And that is when your comrades truly die, for you are no longer comrades then. That's how I feel... Therefore... stand up together with me, Naruto... Because never going back on one's word... is my ninja way too!
  • Rule of Seven: In love with Naruto, a member of Team 7, confesses to Naruto in Chapter 437 (4+3=7). The final chapter (Chapter 700), shows her Happily Married to Naruto, the 7th Hokage. The 7th Shippuden movie shows her and Naruto finally becoming an Official Couple, the two sharing their First Kiss, and having their wedding in the credits. Also, her voice actress is Nana Mizuki.

    S-Z
  • Satellite Love Interest: Downplayed, as Hinata has some traits not revolving around Naruto nor is she his actual interest until the series is almost concluded, but most of Hinata's motivations, on-screen moments, and characterization involved Naruto in some shape or form. In fact, if you were to remove Naruto from this trope entry alone, it'd be a much smaller entry.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Gender-inverted with Naruto. She's a quiet Shrinking Violet while he's a boastful Keet.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Her Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists shapes chakra around her hands into the form of guardian lions. This extends her attack range and the damage her attacks do and even drains away the chakra of those the lions make contact with.
  • Shrinking Violet: Terribly shy and lacking confidence. There's a reason why she once provided this trope's picture. This is largely because of the damage her ultra-strict father's family did to her self-esteem, as well as her huge crush on Naruto. When she first saw Naruto after nearly three years she fainted, twice in the anime. When said guy is in trouble, however, she is ready to die for him. She does gradually outgrow her shyness in Part II; she's still quiet and soft-spoken, but she's also much more confident in herself and her abilities.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: She is a Shrinking Violet and she has dark blue hair.
  • Shy Finger-Twiddling: She did this a lot when talking to Naruto in Part I. Used to provide the page pic, which is taken from her first on-screen appearance in the anime, as seen here.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: In Episode 12 of the Boruto anime, when Boruto and Mitsuki talk about Naruto, Boruto says "Kaa-chan ni deredere shite", which is properly translated to "He's lovestruck towards Mom"Explanation . This is one of the reasons why Boruto views him as a Bumbling Dad. In subsequent episodes, we do see Naruto and Hinata acting like this towards each other — in Episode 18, Naruto lovingly recalls taking Hinata to Ichiraku Ramen on their first date, and in Episode 127, Hinata lovingly recalls how much she's admired Naruto since they were children.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Hinata wore a baggy hoodie or coat throughout the series to signify her insecurity and shy nature. By the time of The Last she wears a sleeveless sweater, short shorts, and even Zettai Ryouiki as her shinobi attire, which signifies that she has outgrown her shyness and is even more self-confident than she already became in Part II.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She's very kind and polite, but she's also a very talented fighter possessing Nerves of Steel. In The Last, she gives Toneri a very powerful demonstration of the trope.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She has only ever loved Naruto. It's this fact that allows Sakura to snap Naruto out of his Heroic BSoD after Hinata "rejects" him in The Last; as Sakura puts it, Hinata has only ever had eyes for him, and that's something that will never change.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: While all the other girls like Sakura and Ino were drooling over "bad boy" Sasuke, Hinata never even noticed him, preferring the nice, cheerful, neglected Naruto. In fact, she first met, and later developed feelings for, Naruto when he defended her against three bullies when they were kids.
  • Snow Means Love: She met Naruto on a snowy day before they enrolled in the Academy, and she has been in love with him ever since. Snow remains a reoccurring motif during Hinata's character arc (in part due to her birthday being on December 27th), but none more so than in The Last, which depicts the final, major developments of her romance with Naruto, which kept getting pushed to the background throughout the main series.
  • Speech-Impeded Love Interest: She had a rather pronounced stutter throughout her childhood due to her abusive family and self-confidence issues. In Part I, she trips over her own words and says "Ano/Um" a lot more than necessary. By Part II, she stops stuttering so much, even around her crush, Naruto. She completely loses her stutter by the Invasion of Pain arc. She and Naruto finally become a couple in The Last.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Downplayed with Naruto. Hinata developed a crush on him because of his ambition and ideals, and he protected her from a trio of bullies on the day they enrolled in the Academy, but she suffered from painful shyness due to her abusive family, and was thus forced to admire him from afar. However, her feelings for him are genuine, rather than an over-obsessive crush. This makes her one of the more sympathetic examples out there, since she is very clearly shown to truly care about him. And her aforementioned shy nature made it hard for her to approach Naruto in Part I. She completely dropped this behavior in Part II, and her feelings became a symbol of real love when she attempted to save him from Pain.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The anime shows that Hinata takes after her mother in appearance. Her own daughter with Naruto, Himawari, takes after her as well, although she has Naruto's face, whiskers, and Innocent Blue Eyes.
  • Stunned Silence: Her reaction to Naruto saying that he liked people like her in the Chunin Exams arc, and then when he reveals that he's in love with her in The Last.
  • Super-Empowering: In The Last, after Hamura Otsutsuki gives Hinata his chakra and deems her The Chosen One, she is able to use the Chakra Transfer technique to share her chakra with Naruto in order to protect him. She is able to do this immediately, which is especially impressive considering it took Naruto some time to learn how to share Kurama's chakra with his comrades.
  • Supernatural Martial Arts: The Gentle Fist which provides examples of...
  • Superpowerful Genetics: The Byakugan, which seems to be the most dominant of all bloodlines seen so far extending to every member of the Hyuga clan except for her own son with Naruto, Boruto, who inherits his father's Innocent Blue Eyes.
  • Super-Senses: Among other abilities, the Byakugan allows nearly 360-degree vision and telescopic view. She was able to increase her Byakugan's telescopic range over time: whereas she could see things 1 kilometer away in Part I, by Part II she could see things from at least 10 kilometers, and by The Last she could see things from at least 20 kilometers.
  • Sweet Tooth: According to the databooks, her favorite food are cinnamon rolls and zenzai (red bean soup); coincidentally, the latter is also the kind that Naruto likes as well.
  • Tears of Joy: In the Invasion of Pain arc, she shed tears of relief upon learning that Naruto managed to defeat Pain, and when he returned to the village safe and sound. She does this twice in The Last: first, when Naruto wholeheartedly accepts the remains of the red scarf she made for him, she tears up and smiles. At the end of the movie, when Naruto proposes to her, she sheds a Sparkling Stream of Tears in elation.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: She is seen knitting a red scarf many times in The Last.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Sakura's Tomboy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In Part II, she not only becomes assertive and much more confident, but she also starts putting good use to her abilities.
  • Tough Love: It appears that becoming a mother has made her sterner in the Boruto anime, with her son in particular.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: According to Naruto in Boruto Episode 18, Hinata loves Ichiraku's Ramen as much as he does. Boruto is naturally skeptic, since Naruto went out of his way to endorse the restaurant and is clearly a biased fan. That said, given her Big Eater tendencies, it's not hard to believe this, given that she is the reigning queen of most ramen bowls eaten in a single hour.
  • Tranquil Fury: Due to her kind and gentle nature, she almost never shows her anger, but whenever she does, it manifests itself as this:
    • In The Last, Toneri was the recipient of such fury in a very scary moment.
    • According to the Boruto anime, this is how she scolds her son, to a high degree of success. The boy may be resentful towards his increasingly busy father, but he's very scared to cross lines with his mother. In Episode 10, after her son skips school, she greets him at the door with her Byakugan activated. He is immediately terrified of her.
    • In the "Naruto To Boruto the Live 2019" event during the live-reading play, she shuts down both Naruto and Sasuke when they start bickering over who's stronger, both Naruto and Sasuke immediately comply.
  • True Blue Femininity: Her dark blue hair qualifies her for this, especially since it's a unique hair color for the Hyuga clan and Konoha in general.
  • True Sight: The Byakugan is capable of seeing through illusion as well as other visually disabling Jutsu like the Hidden Mist technique.
  • Twice Shy: For many years, Hinata was too shy to openly express her deep love for Naruto, causing her to blush and act awkward whenever he was near. In The Last, Naruto reciprocates her feelings once he finally understands how she feels about him and this causes him to get just as shy around her until he confesses he loves her too.
  • The Unchosen One: While she is The Chosen One in The Last, she is this to Naruto in the main series, being there for him during some of the most important battles of his life, such as against Neji, Pain, and Obito.
  • Undying Loyalty: To her family. This is undisputed in The Last, where despite being incredibly happy upon Naruto confessing his love to her, which is something she has been waiting almost her entire life for, she still chooses to "reject" him and "agree" to marry Toneri so that she could destroy the Tenseigan and save her younger sister Hanabi. Even though she clearly regrets hurting Naruto, when she wakes up in Toneri's castle, the first thing she does is find Hanabi, and then she does not once falter in her plan, even though she has to improvise later on, eventually with Naruto's help.
  • The Un-Favourite: Her father resented her for being gentle and shy, preferring her more aggressive younger sister Hanabi as an heiress. They began to repair their relationship after the Chunin Exams arc, and they clearly became on much better terms after he openly applauded her for trying to fight Pain. However, he still didn't consider her good enough to be a leader for the Fourth Shinobi World War, feeling that she wasn't ready yet. Despite that, he still allowed her to participate in the War, and he did not stop her from helping him and Neji protect Naruto during the fight against Obito and Madara.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Hinata is the shy Proper Lady to Naruto's hyperactive Idiot Hero.
  • Uptown Girl: With Naruto. Played With, as she's an heiress of the illustrious and powerful Hyuga clan and the closest Konoha has to a princess after Tsunade left, while he starts off as the village pariah. However, by the time they become an Official Couple during The Last, he had already become the hometown hero who had saved the world, along with being revealed as the son of the Fourth Hokage. It's ultimately Zig-Zagged because, despite Naruto's credentials and achievements, Hinata is still a member of the Hyuga clan's main family and she becomes the Byakugan Princess in The Last, so she's still considered royalty by the time they get together.
  • Use Your Head: In the anime-only episode 148, Naruto startles Hinata by appearing upside down in front of her after she opens the door to his hospital room. She gets so flustered that she headbutts him in the face, throwing him across the room and knocking him unconscious.
  • Vein-o-Vision: The Byakugan lets the user see the chakra network, the better to strike pressure points therein.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: She stands in front of Pain and bravely fights him in order to protect Naruto.
  • Vocal Evolution: Her voice has become subsequently deeper as a mother, in contrast to her cute voice back when she was young.
  • Waif-Fu: Her clan's specialty is the "Gentle Fist" technique, which rather than using crippling damage delivers a short, intense burst of energy to block a chakra point, preventing the use of ninja techniques (and potentially the use of limbs, or organs). In the anime, she's also shown the ability to improve the "near perfect defense" technique to a "truly perfect defense", and turns the Gentle Fist into something that would make Kenshiro start to shed Manly Tears. For the longest time, she did this occasionally. She would have demonstrated her strength more often earlier on, had it not been for her crippling self-esteem issues, which were only sporadically overcome by following Naruto's example. By the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc, after she becomes assertive and has gained a lot more confidence, she starts actively showing off her strength, especially when she masters the Sixty-Four Palms and combines it with her Twin Lion Fists.
  • Warts and All: Hinata has admired, acknowledged, and loved Naruto for the way he is since the very beginning. Both Naruto's flashback in Chapter 538 and Masashi Kishimoto in the aforementioned 2015 NYCC interview confirm that she was the very first person to acknowledge Naruto for who he is, long before Iruka did. The Last shows that because of this, Hinata loves Naruto just the way he is, rather than the hero that everyone else sees, which is one of the reasons why he marries her in the end. She loved him long before he ever became the hero in the public's eye and she'll love him long after his story fades into legend.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Wants to be acknowledged by her father, to the point where her most desired opponent is listed as him. She has managed it. She also counts as a "Well Done, Cousin" Girl since she also wanted Neji's approval, and has achieved it.
  • Wise Beyond Her Years: She is the only one who sees Naruto for who he truly is long before any of the other characters do. She offers Naruto assurance and gives him back his confidence right before he fights Neji. Before that, though, she sees and understands Neji for the troubled and suffering soul he really is, which really sets him off.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Her plan of destroying the Tenseigan core orb in The Last, despite a few setbacks, succeeds through adapting to circumstances, taking advantage of opportunities, and accepting help when offered, especially from Naruto.
  • X-Ray Vision: The Byakugan allows the user to see into and through their target's clothes, skin, flesh, etc, allowing for better pinpointing of chakra nodes.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She may seem pretty weird at first, but she has long dark blue hair and fair skin in Part II. Not only that, she is also exceptionally kind, polite, and soft-spoken to everyone, and she is devoted to Naruto, whom she later marries. The inner iron, while always present, takes a while to manifest, but when it does...it does: In the Chunin Exams preliminaries, she correctly guesses Neji's actual psychological problems and, once she stops fearing him (thanks to Naruto cheering her on), she tells him so to his face, even though she knew he'd surely snap and beat her to death (and he almost did). In the Invasion of Pain arc, she steps out against Pain because of her love for Naruto, even though she knew she would most likely die (and she almost did, which enrages Naruto). Finally, in The Last, she fights off Toneri for the sake of her younger sister, Hanabi, reclaims Hanabi's stolen eyes, and finally becomes not only Naruto's girlfriend, but also his Battle Couple partner.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: A turning point in her relationship with Naruto was when she encouraged him when he revealed his insecurities to her in the Chunin Exams arc and she assured him of his strength by telling him that she can see in his eyes that he is strong. Naruto returns the favor to Hinata three years later during the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc, when she's hard on herself because he had to save her while she was supposed to be protecting him, and he echoes what she said to him back then.
Hinata: (thinking) The one we're supposed to protect is always protecting us. I'm really useless.
Naruto: Don't let it bother you, Hinata. You protected me twice already. I can't let you keep doing that. It's not cool!
Hinata: I-I wasn't worried or anything...
Naruto: I can see it in your eyes. Don't be so hard on yourself! You are strong!
    Hinata: (thinking) Thank you, Naruto-kun.
  • You Are Not Alone: A part of the foundation of her close friendship and eventual romance with Naruto. She serves as a living reminder of the fact that he is not alone, no matter how bad the situation is or what the overwhelming odds are, and vice-versa.
