Macron's OP

Whip It Good is a trope about the use of whips as a weapon but that isn't tropable on its own. The description notes that whip owners tend to be domineering or seductive but that isn't reflected in most of the on page examples and wicks. I conducted a wick check and most of the examples that weren't ZCE or "whip as a weapon" were covered by other weapon/whip related tropes.

Wick Check Percentages

  • Just whip as a weapon—13 wicks~~~26%
  • Character carries a whip for the aesthetic—2 wicks~~~4%
  • Covered by Other Tropes—22 wicks (including two of the wicks from the "Multiple entries" category) ~~~44%
  • Whip It Good + additional context—4 wicks~~~8%
  • Other~~~2%
  • ZCE/Insufficient Context—10 wicks (including two of the wicks from the "Multiple entries" category") ~~~20%

Solution

I think the best course of action would be to disambiguate Whip It Good with the following:

and yard the Whip of Dominance concept because I didn't find enough good examples on that.

  4. FistOfTheNorthStar.Tropes Q To Z:
    • Uighur is a huge, huge man running a prison, so the theme of control and enslavement is still there but without any of the usual vampiness associated with whips. In fact, he's presented as a serious martial artist (well, as serious as you can be if you're not named Kenshiro, Toki, Raoh, Souther, or Rei anyway).
    • A military-style minor villain from one of the earlier episodes also wields one capable of slicing people in half. For all the good it does him against Kenshiro. Whip indicates dominance
  5. TabletopGame.Fortune And Glory: Probably the closest this game comes to directly referencing Indiana Jones is the Gear card "Bull Whip". It gives a combat modifier, and can be risked for a chance to change the outcome of a fight.

Finished the Anime/ namespace.

I've been coming across a few examples of "character uses clothes/hair ribbon as a whip", and I was wondering if a) we have something covering that concept already, and b) if not, if that might be worth putting on the salvage yard.

Other question: what precisely is the boundary between Whip of Dominance and A Taste of the Lash? I ask because I was doing some cleanup around Whip of Dominance's links in preparation for eventual cross wicking once this cleanup project's done and I cam across this one on Characters.Classical Mythology Minor Deities:

  • Whip of Dominance: The three Erinyes/Furies are ancient goddesses born from the spilled blood of Ouranus whose job is to punish mortals who were guilty of killing family members, and they are frequently described as carrying whips with which to beat their victims (though, uniquely, the whips are for torturing their minds, instead of their bodies). Their whips are coated with brass studs to make the whipping hurt more.

This seems to boil down to "character uses whips as a form of punishment", which in my understating is A Taste of the Lash, not Whip of Dominance. If these two tropes are starting to be confused with one another this early, that's a potentially rather worrying sign.

[up] I see it as Whip of Dominance focusing more on the ones wielding the whips while A Taste of the Lash focuses more on the event itself and the person enduring it, which is why it includes self-flagellation. Similar to the difference between Torture Technician and Cold-Blooded Torture.

But I agree that one example is not focusing on the furies that much. I think they still apply, so I'll try to rewrite it.

Should the Lightning Lash trope be reworded to incorporate in its description energy-based whips?

As it stands, it specifically only mentions them as electric-based but there’s already examples of energy lashes listed.

[up][up][up][up]This was my concern regarding Whip of Dominance during its draft phase. The last thing I wrote on the draft before leaving matters alone since I seemed to be the only one raising an issue:

there's a difference between being in control and being controlling, being in a dominant position and being domineering, being one who leads/guides and being authoritarian. From what's written, the trope is about the latter of the two in the pairs, and not the former. While a beast tamer controls animals with a whip, in of itself, it does not mean the whip then characterizes the beast tamer as controlling. All it really shows is that is a Weapon Of Their Trade. Similarly, a farmer character may fight with a hoe and hoes (like many simple farming tools) are often used as symbols of the common folk, industriousness, simplicity. We cannot say without more info on the depiction of the character than just their job and use of the hoe that they are being characterized as a man of the people/hard-working/simple. As far as symbols go, without that info, the hoe is just representative of the farmer's function. It's that extra step into characterization that keeps this distinct from A Taste of the Lash and Weapons of Their Trade.

I personally still think Whip of Dominance as launched functions basically as "any time a person uses a whip" given the broadness of its definition, but in theory if there's no discussion of characterization in the example, it's not Whip of Dominance.

That seems like a massive exaggeration. The trope doesn't even feature some of the most iconic whip users in fiction like Indiana Jones and the Belmont family, because they don't fit. Most of the Whip It Good examples I clean up go into the other tropes or get deleted.

[up]Let me amend: "any time a person uses a whip as intended."

The Indie usage of it as a grappling hook, etc. has been removed but those were already recognized as being something tropeworthy and distinct from all of the other mundane usages from this thread's beginning.

This discussion regarding Whip of Dominance might be a better fit for the TLP crash rescue thread.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

[up]Eh, I mean I don't know what more needs to be discussed. Like I said, these concerns were raised on the draft with very few others engaging with it. If others don't view it as much of an issue after reading the discussion and hearing the different perspectives, then there's not much more that can be done unless it starts creating issues.

Let's focus on cleaning up Whip It Good instead of derailing the thread to critique Whip of Dominance. If there isn't anything worth taking to the TLP crash rescue thread regarding Whip of Dominance, then the ship has sailed on making changes to that trope unless it gets its own TRS thread in the future.
