Image Pickin' thread that pulled the image to let it go to TRS

As seen in the wick check, in practice this is being used to describe any time a character gets married. The bland name and vague description don't help; the description is unsure whether it's a supertrope to the various Wedding and Engagement Tropes or wedding-related events and hijinks.

    Wedding Day Wick Check

Wedding Day

637 wicks total, 50 wicks checked

Wedding hijinks

  1. Angelina Love: "Angelina was given the choice between marrying Romeo and Zoravor. She picked the latter and the wedding went off without a hitch." Picking between two grooms is a hijink
  2. Cheers S 1 E 20: The first of several subversions of this trope on Cheers, as Sam and Diane's faux wedding blows up in an argument." A Marriage of Convenience that blows up
  3. Improv Everywhere: "Surprise Wedding Reception, obviously." Weblinks are not examples, but the concept of a surprise wedding reception seems to fit.
  4. The Nasty Girl: " Sonya's wedding to Martin is somewhat spoiled when somebody throws a brick through the back window of their car."
  5. Skins: "Rich and Grace's attempted wedding in the S5 finale. It doesn't go according to plan, and they don't go though with it, but it still ends happily."
  6. Yutaka's Big Fat Youkai Wedding: "The whole book builds up to Yutaka and Patchouli's wedding, covering the preparations, et cetera, with hilarity ensuing..." Does not detailed what 'hilarity' ensued, but I'll take it
  7. Ultraman Tiga: The Final Odyssey: "Daigo and Reina’s intro scene is their wedding day… before getting interrupted by Kamila taking over the ceremony and turning everyone attending the ceremony into a clone of herself. Although it later turns out to be a Nightmare Sequence. Daigo Madoka and Reina Yanase did in fact have their wedding, as seen in the Epilogue, where Reina wears a nametag that identifies her as Reina Madoka." That's some variant of playing with, but hijinks nonetheless
  8. Charmed S3E15 Just Harried: " Piper and Leo's wedding goes very, very wrong." Light on context but I'll take it
  9. YMMV.The Thrilling Adventure Hour: Context for a Ho Yay entry, but fun things nonetheless: "Sparks and Ginny's Wedding Day. Croach spends the whole episode sulking around and acting jealous. Then he actually interrupts the ceremony, and Nevada asks sarcastically if he's going to declare his love for him—to which Croach responds, "I am, Sparks Nevada" . . . and after a long silence, goes on to say that he's jealous Sparks didn't pick him as best man."
  10. The Greatest American Hero: "Ralph and Pam finally get married in "The Newlywed Game." Naturally, the wedding doesn't exactly go as planned..." Again, light on context but I'll take it
  11. Brooklyn Nine Nine S 2 E 17 Boyle Linetti Wedding: "Exactly What It Says on the Tin and, in the grand tradition of sitcom weddings, nothing goes smoothly." I am willing to take the episode's title as part of the context

A wedding happens or is otherwise part of the work's plot

  1. All In The Family S 2 E 24 Maude: "Carol got married ... and (egad) Archie and Edith are guests. Alas, this is not the typical happy ending of most previous sitcom weddings — this is All In the Family, you know — as Carol's wedding to her Jewish boyfriend never comes off."
  2. The Tree of Wooden Clogs: "Near the end of the movie Maddalena and Stefano get married in the village church."
  3. Overboard (2018): ": The movie ends with Leonardo and Kate's wedding, for real this time, officiated by a Norwegian ship captain on Leonardo's yacht."
  4. Hero Series: "Lee and Taro finally get married in book six." (Illegal double entry with Happily Married)
  5. Weekend at Hisao's: "Hisao's and Shizune's. Kenji is Best Man, Misha is Maid of Honour, Lily is a bridesmaid, having made up with Shizune in time for her own wedding, Hideaki, Jigoro, Miki, Takumi and Iwanako all attend."
  6. The Otherworld: "The short story "Wedding Bell Hell" details Paige and Lucas's."
  7. Relativity: "Ravenswood and his fiancee, Melody, get married" (sinkhole)
  8. Sisters... No Way!: "Richard and Margaret. Cindy doesn't go to the wedding at first but turns up at the end." Not quite drama
  9. Outlander Allies And Friends: "Her wedding to Ian is shown in MOBY."
  10. Three's Company: "The first half of the two-part series finale depicts Janet's wedding to Phillip, a guy she met at the flower shop."
  11. X-Men 1970: "Scott and Jean get married in the beginning of the third chapter. Their wedding is a strictly "close friends and relatives only" quiet affair." (There's also a quote that details the 'you may now kiss the bride' bit but nothing out of the ordinary happens)
  12. AdventureTime.Tropes S To Z: All three examples: "The Ice King has one to a suitor who appears to willingly love him[...]"Apple Wedding" has one last a whole episode, as Tree Trunks marries Mr. Pig[...]In the Grand Finale, Ice Gunther and Turtle Princess."
  13. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003): "Series finale Wedding Bells and Bytes. Lampshaded by Michelangelo: "Every series eventually does a wedding episode, dude!""
  14. The Middle: Both examples: "The third-season finale, "The Wedding," built around Mike's brother Rusty's wedding at the Hecks' house. [...]The final episode shows Sue and Sean's wedding."
  15. Arrow S 3 E 22 This Is Your Sword: "Between Oliver and Nyssa at the end of the episode." I assume this means they got hitched
  16. When Calls the Heart: " Lee and Rosemary wed in the season three finale, "Prayers From The Heart"."
  17. Degrassi Schools Out: "The film ends with several characters attending the wedding of Simon and Alexa. Ten years later at their class reunion, they are still Happily Married and expecting their third child."
  18. Empath: The Luckiest Smurf - Wedding Bells For Bigmouth: "A Wedding Day episode." Proceeds to summarize the events of the episode, which does include a wedding
  19. 227: " Rose and Warren get married in Season 5's "Do Not Pass Go: Part 2"."
  20. StevenUniverse.Tropes S To Z: "In "Reunited", Ruby and Sapphire, who have planned to recommit themselves to be inseparable of their own free will in "The Question", decide to renew their commitment at a wedding ceremony, with Steven presiding, and Garnet makes her return after an emotional breakup in "Now We're Only Falling Apart"." Um... I guess that's a normal wedding
  21. Hollow Kingdom Trilogy: "Lots of weddings occur in the books including Kate and Marak, Sable and Tinsel, Seylin and Emily, Thaydar and Irina, Miranda and Nir, and Catspaw and Arianna."
  22. Excalibur: "Captain Britain and Meggan. Even the Crazy Gang was there. (As guests, mind you; they weren't evil anymore by then.)"
  23. The Fourth of July: "After a Proposal with a big yes, an attempt to plan a bachelorette party and a sentimental talk on the stairs, Catherine gets married."
  24. They Knew What They Wanted: "The first two acts of this three-act play are on the day of Tony and Amy's wedding."
  25. Mr. Belvedere: " The Grand Finale has Mr. Belvedere getting married and preparing to accompany his new bride to Africa."
  26. Superstore S 2 E 20: "For Cheyenne and Bo, who got engaged in the pilot. Unlike the rest of the other episodes, this doesn't take place in the titular superstore."
  27. Crazy Rich Asians: "Colin and Araminta's big fancy wedding is the focal event of the novel."
  28. Temptation of an Angel: " Joo Ah-Ran and Shin Hyun-Woo have an elaborate wedding at a luxurious hotel." Sinkhole
  29. Father of the Bride (1991): "[Annie] is about to get married to Bryan" Sinkhole
  30. Superman: "Superman and Lois Lane get married." Sinkhole
  31. The Rock Farmer's Daughters: "The epilogue is about Cheese and Pinkamena's wedding."
  32. Muzzy in Gondoland: "The climax of the first film celebrates Bob and Sylvia's wedding."
  33. Love Actually: "Peter and Juliet's is seen in the beginning, attended by some of the other characters."
  34. Dark Parables: "The plot centers around the royal wedding of Prince Gwyn and Gerda. Presumably, they live Happily Ever After at the end, having been crowned King Gwyn and Queen Gerda."

Lacks context/misc

  1. Bridesmaids (I was surprised, given the topic of the film)
  2. Hadestown: "Wedding Song", natch."
  3. Welcome To Night Vale Ep 100 Toast: "It's what's being toasted."
  4. Rankin Bass' Jack Frost: ""When the first blossom shows."
  5. A Clash of Kings: "as a Qartheen custom, on the Wedding Day the bride and groom may ask a single wish of each other, a wish that cannot be denied." No actual wedding happens, but it talks about a wedding custom

Results:

  • "Wedding hijinks/wedding does not go smoothly": 11/50 = 22%
  • "A wedding happens": 34/50 = 68%
  • Lacks context/misc": 5/50 = 10%

With 68% of usage just describing "a wedding happens", I think this trope has problems.

However, while doing the wick check, I did pick up on usage trends: Wedding Episode, an Episode where characters attend a wedding (all the fun of a Dress-Up Episode with all the requisite wedding hijinks, etc), and Finale Wedding, where the work ends with a wedding ala Happily Ever After. There is also Worst Wedding Ever in TLP, where a wedding is ruined by said hijinks.

Isolating potentially tropeworthy cases from Wedding Day

Wedding end

  1. The Tree of Wooden Clogs: "Near the end of the movie Maddalena and Stefano get married in the village church." (maybe)
  2. Overboard (2018): ": The movie ends with Leonardo and Kate's wedding, for real this time, officiated by a Norwegian ship captain on Leonardo's yacht."
  3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003): "Series finale Wedding Bells and Bytes. Lampshaded by Michelangelo: "Every series eventually does a wedding episode, dude!""
  4. The Middle: Both examples: "The third-season finale, "The Wedding," built around Mike's brother Rusty's wedding at the Hecks' house. [...]The final episode shows Sue and Sean's wedding."

  7. The Rock Farmer's Daughters: "The epilogue is about Cheese and Pinkamena's wedding."
  8. Mr. Belvedere: " The Grand Finale has Mr. Belvedere getting married and preparing to accompany his new bride to Africa."

Wedding episode

  1. Superstore S 2 E 20: "For Cheyenne and Bo, who got engaged in the pilot. Unlike the rest of the other episodes, this doesn't take place in the titular superstore."

Agreed on cutting Wedding Day and splitting it into actual tropes.

I support to split this into tropes.

Wouldn't Wedding Finale be covered just fine by Happily Ever After? Or do you mean it as specific subset of Episodes? (Stock Series Finales mentions Wedding Day.)

^I thought about Wedding Episode as the subtrope of Episodes (in that it's a cool/fun thing to have your characters do), and Wedding Finale as related to Happily Ever After — it doesn't have to be the leads who get married at the end, but it's a high note to end a work on (Clueless comes to mind as an example). But if Wedding Finale is covered by Happily Ever After, that's fine too.

Split into different tropes

I think Wedding Finale is a specific subtrope of Happily Ever After, distinct enough to get its own trope. (And not all Wedding Finales are happy, if you count those that are season finales that end in heartbreak or being left at the altar or something).

It's been about a week, and there's no dissenting opinion to the split.

Just to be clear, 'splitting' here means the trope will be cut afterwards, right?

It has almost 3,000 inbounds, so it would probably be made into a disambiguation page.

[up]It could also be made into a redirect, like how the TRS thread for Election Night turned it into a redirect to Election Day Episode instead of completely cutting it.

Wedding Day can be made into a redirect to something like Wedding Episode.

In my mind I think I subconsciously always just read it as Wedding Episode anyway so... yeah. Go ahead and split the sumbitch.

Crowner, including what to do with Wedding Day afterwards (cut/redirect/disambig). No options on what to disambiguate/redirect to yet.

I don't foresee the split not happening, so I'm going to start writing up TLP drafts for Wedding Episode and Wedding Finale.

Just a note. It has just occurred to me that Wedding Bells... for Someone Else is another subtrope of Wedding Day split. More specifically, it's probably a subtrope of Wedding Day Finale, because it's an Ending Trope.
