Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

To specify, I meant that those MB's that only appear in books should be listed in Lit.

But if the books literally have no MB's or characters that appear but only count as MB's because of their game actions? I see absolutely no issue: Have them all listed on Video Games.

[tup] to the Copellion Commander.

Now then, I’ve got a candidate that’s worth discussing to become a MB from Need for Speed: Carbon.

What’s the Work?

Need for Speed Carbon is a 2006 racing video game serving as the tenth installment of the Need for Speed series and a sequel to Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

The Player Character arrives at the fictional city Palmont after escaping authorities in Rockport. He starts to have flashback about the time he was in a street race in Palmont only for the cops to show up and arrest everyone there, with the exception of the player who makes his hasty escape.

Then back to the present day and Nathan Cross, a former police sergeant from Rockport in the previous games arrives who becomes a bounty hunter in this game arrives and crashes the player’s car and is about to arrest him. Then Cross is soon payed off and the player gets rescued by this man, my candidate Darius.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Darius is the leader of the street racing crew Staked Deck that dominated the Las Vegas theme district in Palmont, Silverton. He’s also the guy to pays off Cross and convinces the Player Character to retake territories from other crews in Pelmont, with the exception of his own of course, in order to clear his named and restore his reputation.

Thus the player follows him without question and just when he takes control of the three territories Darius tell him about, Darius reveals that he never had any intentions of helping out the player, only manipulating him to gain more territory for himself and his crew, then has Cross arrest him while Darius take the player’s hard earn territories and by an extension with his own territory gains control of the whole city.

It seems like its all lost only for the player’s ex-girlfriend Nikki to show up and pay off Cross into freeing the player, where she tell the player of the night that shaped the events of this game. (you know the flashback where all the racers but him got arrested) It turns out that it was Darius who orchestrated that event, by tipping off the police, switching the money bag, and letting the player escape, thus turning him into a fugitive, ruin his street creed, and stealing all the prize money for himself.

When Darius learns that Nikki has freed the player from Cross’ capture, he decides to strengthen his already powerful crew by recruiting the fallen crew member that lost their territories from the player under Darius’ manipulations. He has them race the player to see if they can beat him and when they failed Darius challenges the player himself to beat him and tarnish his reputation forever.

However the player wins the race and Darius accept his defeat quite well, giving his nice car (Audi Le Mans Quattro) and leaving the city. Before Darius leaves however, tells the player to "...enjoy it while it lasts. There's always someone out there who's a little faster than you are...and sooner or later they're going to catch up.”

Is He Intelligent? Is He Charismatic?

For intelligence as the leader of one of the most powerful street racing crews in Palmont, he has a lot of street smarts. He knows how street crews will act and react and exploits that to his own advantages, uses his connections with authorities to get rid of unwanted competition, and manipulates people into doing what he wants effortlessly.

As for charisma, Darius display absolute charm, coolness, and confidence in his abilities. He also doesn’t go into Smug Snake territory by being caution enough to be aware of the player’s skills in the streets and is prepare for any obstacle against him, such as recruiting the fallen crew members when he learns that Nikki bailed the player out, all without loosing his cool charm once.

Also he isn’t just a suave manipulator as he has the racing skills to back up his claim why he is the leader of one of the, if not the, most notorious street racing crew in Palmont and is just as skilled at racing, if not more so, as the player nearly beating him.

Even when Darius loses he reveals himself to be a Graceful Loser, giving the player his ride and leaves the city without loosing any of his cool nor throwing a hissy fit, only warning the player that other racers will challenge the player and try to take his throne.

What’s The Competition Like?

Darius is by far the most intelligent and charismatic villain in this series. Cross is too much of a dick to count, plus he’s only just trying to do his job.

The villain of Most Wanted, Razor is too much of an arrogant dick to qualify, with his only smarts being that he sabotaged the player’s car and unlike Darius, Razor is a Sore Loser.

As Darius said not all races are won in the track and he most certainly won the race for MB.

Is He A Bastard? Is He Too Much Of a Bastard?

Okay Darius leads the notorious street crew Staked Deck, thereby making him a criminal, frames the player for crimes he did not commits, and manipulates the player into getting more territories for him only to callously leave him at Cross’ mercy after he is no longer useful to him.

That said Darius never commits any deplorable crimes that would detract from his magnificence, is confident but never arrogant, seems to have a degree of respect for the player’s abilities, and accepts his defeat very well acknowledging that the player beat him.

Final Verdict

I’ll leave that to you guys!

Yea on Darius. Also, found this on Kongoh Bancho:

  • Magnificent Bastard: Hikyou Bancho. He's a Dirty Coward and Manipulative Bastard... who is a far better fighter than you'd expect, when he shows himself to be a badass later on.
    • If L, Light,, and Lelouch donated their DNA to create the ultimate magnificent bastard, you'd likely get Hikyou Bancho: Until Machine Banchou's appearance, he is the only Banchou able to cause Kongou severe injuries, the most impressive trick causing Kongou to be hit by a freakin' semi truck! And he manages to perform all of these tricks while making sure that there is no way for his opponent to counter attack. He later defeats an enemy by drugging his food with laxatives the morning before the fight, and afterwards, as payback for trying to kill him and his friends, drugs him again, drags him into the woods, then beats him bloody. The victim is left a hikikomori, too scared to eat his favorite foods in fear of them being drugged again. Hikyou is a Magnificent Bastard of high caliber.

He seems... Interesting, but the entry mentions he's a dirty coward. @Lightysnake And since you know the series pretty well... Any opinions on him?

Also, here is this from Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie:

  • Magnificent Bastard: Lasombra. He took over the group that Arnold's parents' friend Eduardo worked for in order to arrange the Rigged Contest for the San Lorenzo field trip, naming the PS-118 class the winners when he sees Arnold is with them. He impersonated Eduardo himself to take the kids on his riverboat, manipulating Arnold into confiding in him and keeping the knowledge of Lasombra being after him a secret from his friends, and when a boat carrying men working for the real Eduardo came in pursuit, he claimed they were Lasombra and his crew and that he was changing course to get the class to safety when it reality he was luring them into his pre-arranged trap. When Arnold, Gerald, and Helga escape from their imprisonment, Lasombra had anticipated this happening and had already placed a tracking device on Arnold. As he and his crew followed the kids' trail, Lasombra anticipated all the booby traps and had his crew members take all the blows instead. He very nearly succeeded in taking the Corazon for himself, even narrowly averting a Disney Villain Death (at first) and prolonging his own death by poison just for one last shot at taking it.

Alrighty before I forget here's Darius' write-up:

  • Need for Speed: Carbon: Darius is the leader of the notorious Stacked Deck street racing crew in Palmont City. Bailing the Player Character out, Darius has him race other crew leaders so he can take control of their territories and sells the player out to the bounty hunter, Nathan Cross, once he is of no use to him. It's been revealed that Darius caused the event that tarnished the player's reputation by tipping off the police of a street race the player was participating in, switched the money bag, and letting the player escape Palmont. When Darius learns that Nikki made a deal with Cross to free the player, recruits the fallen crew leaders to Stacked Deck and has them race the player before racing him personally. With his cunning only matched by his racing skills, Darius nearly defeats the player on the track before accepting his defeat with grace merely telling the player to enjoy his victory while it last as there's always someone out there who's a little faster than him and eventually they're gonna catch up.

Also since there’s a chance that Zaheer might qualify, whose going to do his EP and Write-up?

That's a tough one, need to think. Hikkyou would qualify for this hands fucking down no question....the thing is, he has a Defeat Means Friendship and joins the heroes after his intro arc, though he never loses his underhanded demeanor...but he's a straight up fighter for the good guys for the rest of the series.

The 'coward' thing isn't really accurate...it's more that is enemies call him that because he's sneaky, underhanded and ruthless, so he takes it as a compliment.

@Lightysnake So wanna add that on your to-do list to solve the cases haha...

Speaking of the same circumstances... I've been meaning to do Shichirou Ougi but I'm not sure since at the end of the day, he performs a heel face turn pretty fast despite siding with the Big Bad at first. Same with the Big Bad but not Yumeji but I feel he's obsessed with his revenge against Yumeji that I'm not sure if he qualifies as an MB

Might as well. Hikkyou Bancho is pretty far from a coward as would be disqualifying. His entire thing is fighting dirty, but his ultimate goal is to protect and provide for all the kids in an orphanage who he considers his brothers and sisters, he's loyal to his friends to a fault and he's ultimately one of the heroes. He's either one of the most heroic MB's out there (Granted, one of his first acts when he's a villain is forcing a man to fight the hero by threatening his parents, which is Characterization Marches On in the extreme), or one of the darker Guile Hero ones.

Takeshi Kongoh, however...likely qualifies and Voltron gave us a pair.

Here's what I've got:

  • Clean Room: Astrid Mueller is a brilliant young woman devoted to ruthlessly guarding humanity from the Entities. Using the Clean Room, alien technology to peruse the past and memories, Astrid uses blackmail, coercion and manipulation to maintain control. Surrounding herself with loyal men and women, Astrid makes certain they have psychological flaws she can exploit to break them should they betray her, and when her company's board tries to betray her, Astrid outlasts an assassination attempt, turns the assassin to her side and outplays them effortlessly. Astrid proceeds to outwit all the entities, foiling their invasion and even sacrifices her own reputation to keep humanity's innocence at the horrors of the void intact, maintaining a true care for humanity and those around her.
  • The Light Brigade, by Peter Tomasi: Zephon is the last of the Grigori; an order of angels who once watched humanity and fathered half-human children known as Nephilim. Desiring his revenge for his lost brethren and children, Zephon infiltrates the Nazi ranks with his Nephilim soldiers and uses the Nazis as proxies so he may recover the sword of god and place himself close to the Holy Flame to kindle the blade to allow him to defeat God himself. Laying siege to a monastery guarded by the soldiers known as the Light Brigade, Zephon strategically wears them down and fights his way through, even using a captured ally plane in a kamikaze run to give himself access. With his unshakable conviction and desire to see his Nephilim given their deserved wings, Zephon will stop at nothing at his revenge upon heaven.
  • Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol: The ingenious Kurt Hendricks is a former specialist in nuclear endgame theory, who grew weary of treating the lives of millions like a game, and came to the conclusion that nuclear war is an inevitability, no matter what efforts he takes. Introduced hijacking the IMF's operation to break into the Kremlin, Hendricks frames the agency for bombing the landmark, effortlessly stirring tensions between the U.S. and Russia to levels not seen since the Cold War. Abducting the family of a nuclear physicist, Hendricks forces the man to verify nuclear launch codes, killing him afterwards because he knows too much, though he does allow the man's family to live. Launching a missile towards San Francisco in hopes of inciting nuclear armageddon, causing any survivors in the aftermath to declare a worldwide armistice, Hendricks manages to hold his own against Ethan Hunt in a fight for the command briefcase, and, knowing when he's beat, simply leaps to his death to ensure his plan succeeds, literally coming within a second of accomplishing his goals. Despite his omnicidal visions and sheer ruthlessness, Hendricks genuinely believes that Utopia Justifies the Means, and manages to play the IMF and the world's governments for fools all the while.
  • Don't Be a Hero, by Chris Strange: Morgan "Quanta" Shepherd is a man with the power to control light. Inspired by superheroes, Shepherd ends up revolted at the world's ingratitude towards them. Fashioning himself into the supervillain Quanta, he orchestrates mass breakouts of supervillains, fashioning himself into a charismatic leader for them as he orchestrates brutal attacks and experiments with the purpose of forcing the world to realize the necessity for superheroes again. Attempting to turn the young boy Sam into a living, superpowered weapon, Quanta pulls off a major plan in a matter of days, creating a near catastrophic tragedy, all the inspire the return of heroes to stop villains like him with near perfect success.
  • Darksiders III: The true villain of the game, Envy, possesses Fury's Watcher and spends the entire game steadily manipulating her to Envy's own ends. Having Envy eliminate all the Seven sins, Envy emerges when Pride has been defeated to usurp all their power and to defeat Fury effortlessly. Declaring that the world will be hers, Envy proceeds to storm over to the Charred Council and nearly erases them herself to achieve her own ends, showcasing a brilliant and cunning mind underneath her selfishness and deadliness.
When Darius learns that Nikki made a deal with Cross to free the player, he recruits the fallen crew leaders to Stacked Deck and has them race the player before racing him personally. With his cunning only matched by his racing skills, Darius nearly defeats the player on the track before accepting his defeat with grace merely telling the player to enjoy his victory while it last as there's always someone out there who's a little faster than him and eventually they're gonna catch up.
  • Spider Man: Faking a Heel–Face Turn to present a heroic face to the world, Dr. Otto Octavius plots to force humanity's advancement through the symbiotes. Using proxy criminals to create distractions, Octavius steals vital technology to blanket New York in fog and unleash the symbiotes. Mastering the symbiotes and even keeping the unstable Carnage on a leash, Octavius manages to infest much of New York, nearly pulling off his plane right under Spider-Man's nose while escaping suspicion.

      • The Witcher: Jacques de Aldersberg, Grand Master of the Order of the Flaming Rose, is the mastermind behind all major events in the first game. This puts King Foltest into a delicate situation, where he either has to give Jacques full authority to end the revolt or do nothing, making him look like a weak ruler. His knights are secretly funded by the drug money his ally, the criminal organization Salamandra, makes for him, which allows Jacques to present the order as humble heroes of the people who fulfill their needs for free. His ultimate plan is turning mankind into highly advanced mutants with the help of the stolen Witcher Secrets, and leading them southwards to survive the incoming White Frost. Throughout his conversations with Geralt, who later turns out was his former adoptive father, he tries to convince him of the righteousness of his cause, having sacrificed everything to save humanity (wether it wants it or not) in an almost flawlessly executed scheme.
