YMMV / Power Rangers Dino Fury

Go To

  • Adorkable:
    • J-Borg's attempts to be a reporter can make her very endearing.
    • Solon is a robo-dinosaur but she's such a sweetheart like when she covers her face to be surprised at the Rangers' Halloween costumes or how she's bashful at singing Christmas carols.
    • Zayto's attempts to fit in after 65 million years in stasis. When he tries to get an interview for Buzzblast, he uses a catcphrase — "Cool, cool, coolio!" — with finger guns.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Warden Garcia in "Stego Search" in regards to Javi's dreams. One could say that he had a point regarding Javi changing tracks with musical instruments often, saying that he's already gone through three recently, not to mention that the model of keytar Javi did buy was $900 (many fans have researched and one could've been had at $200-$300, so it's possible he was ripped off). Some people think that the Warden was trying to protect Javi from wasting his money. Of course this doesn't change the fact that he was very cruel to his son, and had no right to try and return an item that Javi had bought with his own money - and even fans who think Warden Garcia had decent intentions don't sympathize with him much because of this.
    • Did Zayto truly believe that the Sporix would help them defend Rafkon, or did he know it was dangerous but went along with the council anyway due to pressure from the higher ups?
    • Just how much of Santaura's actions as Void Queen was of her own free will and did transforming herself with Sporix energy have any affect on her sanity? While it was her own choice to use this transformation as part of avenging her thought to be dead child and she showed some unpleasantness beforehand, as Void Queen she shows some moments where she acts hammy and even like a Card-Carrying Villain complete with evil laugh. Plus, Tarrick also had no control over being Void King when she uses the same pod to brainwash him and Amelia using telepathy to confirm that she is indeed still alive results in her transforming back.
  • Awesome Music: While the theme song is a little divisive (see below), the way that elements of it are worked into the fighting score has been well received, with it being more exciting than the usual rock and integrating a bit of techno into the mix. The result makes it feel distinct and alien, a nice change of pace from the usual soundtrack.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Ollie. While a lot of fans like him for his worldliness and devotion to science (the latter making him an interesting Foil to the superstitious Amelia), others dislike him for his over-reliance on technology, and for his recurring mockery of Amelia over her belief in the supernatural.
    • Aiyon. Some see him as a loveable goof, others see him as a constantly selfish and greedy manchild Jerkass who never learns from his mistakes.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • J-Borg is only a minor character, a robot at that, but the antics she and Jane get into in her attempt to become a good reporter are both hilarious and endearing.
    • Lily from "Winning Attitude" was well loved by the fandom for her caring personality and also because she was actively played by a Special Olympic athlete and that her character was not just defined by her disability.
    • Fern, Izzy's rival from "Winning Attitude", became very popular with fans who liked the idea of them going from rivals to lovers - and even moreso when they really did start dating and Fern was shown to be a very supportive girlfriend. Many fans were elated that she not only is set to return for Cosmic Fury, but got a Promotion to Opening Titles.
    • Ollie's mother, Dr. Lani Akana, also became popular after her spotlight episode in "Void Trap", particularly when she ended up distracting Void Knight long enough for her son to cut out the siphoning of energy and her Mama Bear threat towards him.
  • Epileptic Trees: The Morphin Masters seen creating the Dino Gems, Energems, and the Nexus Prism has set off many, many theories about how they were involved in all the past wars shown in older seasons, as well as how various previous Ranger powers were created. The episode Morphin' Masters would later reveal how the Green Master was responsible for resurrecting Steel, giving Jason his Dino Coin and bringing the other rangers into the Legendary Battle from Super Megaforce and perhaps tied to Troy's dreams about said battle.
  • Evil Is Cool: Lord Zedd returns in all his evil glory in Episode 14, with a more badass looking design and he's capable of trouncing the Dino Fury rangers without breaking a sweat. The fact that he escapes at the end of the episode means that he'll be coming back in the future, and he does in season 2.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • In "Unexpected Guest", Mick reveals he's been traveling multiple galaxies in search of the Nexus Prism and has gotten selfies with 40 other Rangers. What type of adventures has he gotten into? Has he encountered the rangers of the Dino Charge or RPM worlds? Or worlds that haven't been adapted into Power Rangers yet? If he has been to the Dino Charge world, maybe he can let Zayto see the dinosaurs again?
    • The Morphin Masters creating the Dino Gems, Energems, and the Nexus Prism provides plenty of fuel for the Masters interfering in the backstories of previous seasons, such as the Beast War or the initial conflicts on Miranoi.
    • Reaghoul was able to bring back Lord Zedd pre Z-Wave; what type of other baddies is he capable of resurrecting? Would Lord Zedd try to learn where Rita Repulsa/Mystic Mother is? Isn't his post Z-wave self still out there as well?
  • Fanon: Despite Cosmic Fury confirming that Fern will become the Cosmic Fury Orange Ranger, fans like to give her the color purple since this is what she wears for most of her appearances.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Amelia/Ollie is the canon romance, but to some fans, their old married couple bickering and Belligerent Sexual Tension feels more like Ollie mean-spiritedly bullying her for her interest in the supernatural, especially prior to "New Leaf". So fans took to shipping her with the much less acerbic Javi.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Japanese Toku show The High School Heroes since both shows aired an episode that had LGBT+ characters around the same time — Dino Fury has lesbian Izzy and Fern while High School Heroes’s Ichika Sakurai is a trans woman and the pink ranger.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The first episode of Zayto accidentally causing the Sporix to scatter becomes this after it's revealed in "Ancient History" that he did this in the past which led to the invasion of his homeworld.
    • Watching the series again with the knowledge that Void Knight/Tarrick is actually Amelia's father makes it harder to watch knowing that Void Knight was unknowingly fighting his own daughter and that the season 1 finale had them almost kill each other.
    • Lani Akana's boast that she will kill everything Void Knight will ever love is badass, until we see it through Void Knight's perspective over how it's essentially a threat to Amelia, who is Void Knight's beloved long-lost daughter. Moreover, Ollie, the person Lani is protecting from the villain, also loves Amelia, though it will take him until partway through season two to realize this.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In "The Makeover", Amelia and Zayto swap places with Amelia temporarily being the Red Dino Fury Ranger. Then came the announcement for Cosmic Fury that she'll be the full time red ranger.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Pretty much everyone had guessed that Santaura would betray Void Knight when she was revived.
    • Many people had connected the subtle, but present hints that Amelia's parents were Void Knight and Santaura before season 2 began. As such many people were pleased to find out that their theory was correct.
  • Informed Wrongness: The other Rangers in "Cut Off". The episode makes them out to be in the wrong for declining to use all of Ollie's frivolous and unnecessarily over-complicated gadgets during the camping trip. Even though the devices did prove useful, it was only via cobbling them together into a crossbow to pop the balloon used by Void Knight's crew in their plan to block the Rangers' communications (which was definitely not the intended use, though most things in history are not used for their intended purpose like folded chairs in the WWE). It doesn't help that Ollie's reaction to their refusal was to say "Don't come crying to me if you change your minds", an overreaction to a mostly non-malicious response. Somewhat Downplayed in that the characters explixtly poke fun at him over bringing gadgets, and some of the gadgets were actually quite reasonable such as the retractable walking stick.
  • Iron Woobie: Zayto is the Sole Survivor of the original Dino Fury Rangers, in stasis for 65 million years only to find that the dinosaurs are extinct (in this dimension anyhow), he's not sure if Rafkon is all right (and the only keepsake he has left is a necklace given to him from his mother) and an attempt to listen to a message ends up in failure. All of this happens to him in the first three episodes. He still stays strong as he's glad to have a team again and with the Sporix and Void Knight running around, he barely has time to grieve. Then Episode 10 uses this as a plot point when Slyther masquerades as another survivor of Rafkon and the audience knows this isn't true. Ancient History ramps it up to reveal that the sporix invasion that destroyed Rafkon was his fault.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!:
    • Another dinosaur season so soon after the last one, and with the same ranger colour scheme, brought a lot of ire from those in the fandom who had been hoping for an adaption of one of the other various sentai that haven't crossed over yet. It's a similar reaction that the source show Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger got when it was first announced, but compounded due to there being less time between the two series.note Not only that but this is also coming off the heels of the Dino Ranger team-up that was shown in Power Rangers Beast Morphers.
    • Being the third season using keys as its gimmick (after the Legendary Ranger Keys and Morph-X Keys), and coming right off the heels of the last series that used it would feel rather repetitive for some fans, only mitigated by the fact that the former happened 6 years ago.
    • Amelia's missing parents; Ninja Steel got some flack by giving Brody the same Disappeared Dad situation as his immediate predecessor Tyler. The mysteriously missing parents thing took a series off for Beast Morphers but now Amelia is searching for her parents too.
    • Some have this reaction to Zedd coming back, as ever since Super Megaforce, both Bandai and Hasbro have taken every opportunity to bank on nostalgia, whether it be the actual show ("Dimensions in Danger" in Super Ninja Steel, "Grid Connection" in Beast Morphers), the toyline (the endless Mighty Morphin merchandise), or even video games (like Power Rangers: Legacy Wars or Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid). Seeing Dino Fury rely on Mighty Morphin nostalgia yet again irks fans who got used to the seasons being more standalone. Of course, there's still plenty of Dino Fury doing it's own thing.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: The theme song being only thirty seconds long is seen as a point against it, which is a complaint the Power Rangers Beast Morphers theme got as well. Some also dislike it for sounding extremely similarly to the Beast Morphers theme.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Many fans were interested in Izzy for how she was a tomboy who freely removed the skirt of her Power Ranger outfit — stating that "Skirts aren't my thing" — and praised how Episode 13 revealed she was dating a girl, Fern, with the other rangers giving an approving nod. Fern even tells Javi that she's not dating guys (to which he accepts without any signs of disappointment). Episode 18 continues it with Izzy giving Fern a (Cheek-to-cheek) kiss and openly calling Fern her girlfriend. A Season 2 episode even has them heading off to prom with Izzy's parents being supportive of the relationship, and Izzy sporting a snazzy tux, and "Things Unspoken" have them finally confess their love for one another and Fern learning how Izzy is a Power Ranger. Cosmic Fury would continue this when Fern became a Power Ranger, meaning there would be a queer Battle Couple for the first time in the franchise.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Tarrick is an alien refugee from the planet Rafkon who lost his infant daughter and had his wife sent into a coma upon coming to Earth. Tarrick becomes Void Knight and hatches various schemes to acquire Sporiox cores in order to return her to full health. To this end, as Void Knight he plots to defeat the Rangers and gain the cores, such as using a monster to manipulate the Rangers into giving the cores to him or using a Zord Jammer to disable the Rangers while he gathers the cores. Tarrick is also a brilliant fighter, and is able to match the Rangers blow for blow and even later builds his own base and robotic generals to aid his schemes. When his wife Santura is finally revived but becomes evil due to Sporiox infection, Tarrick turns on her and helps the Rangers sabotage her scheme for destroying Earth. When his daughter turns out to be alive, Tarrick returns and helps to defuse a bomb that threatens the city and is able to reunite with his wife after she's cured of her condition. In Cosmic Fury, Tarrick continues to be a stylish genius as he leads the resistance against Zedd's rule on Earth and also places a mole in Zedd's organization to help get information to stop him.
  • Memetic Psychopath: After the reveal that Master Green was responsible for some events in earlier shows, the fandom not only exaggerated this to her being responsible for EVERYTHING in the franchise, but in particular, the poorly received or darker aspects (Kimberley’s "Dear John" Letter, Venjix destroying humanity.
  • Nightmare Fuel: A preview clip for season 2 shows Void Knight successfully revive Santaura with her opening her unhuman looking eyes.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: "Fizzy" for Fern/Izzy.
  • Questionable Casting: Andrew Liang was openly harassed due to being considered inferior to Robert Axelrod as Lord Zedd. While Axelrod and Zedd were significant staples of the franchise, these factors did not excuse or justify their poor behavior, which led to Liang getting replaced by Fred Tatasciore as Lord Zedd for the final season, with a Broken Base forming about the recasting in and of itself as some feel Fred's version, while better, still doesn't match up to Axelrod's version. Not helped by the inconsistent audio effects work done to it.
  • Shocking Moments: Episode 14 brings back Lord Zedd — more specifically one that never got hit by Zordon's Z-Wave — and ends with him escaping, meaning he'll come back in the future.
  • Signature Scene:
    • From Episode 4, Izzy ripping off the skirt of her Dino Fury Ranger outfit. This got iconic so fast that it became part of her entry pose in Legacy Wars.
    • From Episode 8, the revelation of the Morphing Masters' role throughout the franchise.
    • From Episode 13, Izzy going on a date with Fern, cementing the first LGBT relationship in the TV series.
    • From Episode 39, Fern's Put on a Bus scene after she learns Izzy's secret along with the two confessing they love another.
  • Stock Footage Failure:
    • Somewhat minor example, but it can be pretty easy to tell which is Japanese footage and which is American/New Zealand whenever the Green Ranger is on screen, as the latter has visible stitching on her front that lead up to her breasts.
    • Gold Ranger too, due to the color of his spandex, which is a dull beige in new footage and shiny gold in the Japanese source material. This is a recurring problem for gold rangers.
  • Squick: Simon Bennett has pointed out that because the Nemesis Beast is an organic being, Void Queen is controlling it from a "meat cockpit".
  • Tainted by the Preview:
    • Trailers declaring that the villains were after the Morphin' Grid turned off many viewers since it sounded like a rehash of the previous season's plot, and another iteration of the villains going after the Rangers' power source—something that had plagued every season since Dino Charge. This ultimately becomes subverted as the plot is a race to subdue and regain control of the Sporix, the monsters of this season.
    • When promotional photos featuring Mick Kanic leaked ahead of the premiere, many people were turned off. Though the character is liked fine, a good portion of the fandom found his season neither disappointing nor amazing and worried that his presence was a harbinger of other, less-liked elements of the season and were ready to tune out immediately.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Minor point, but assuming they aren't under some kind of spell or anything, Zayto is almost always in the lead spot when piloting the Megazord, even if the head changes to a different Ranger's key. Some wish that the spots would change depending on who's key is being used, which the show has done in previous seasons in similar situations.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: In Episode 19, Zayto and Amelia switch bodies, and are unable to morph. Later on, they figure out that swapping keys allows them to morph, even in their new bodies. However, when they do morph, instead of Amelia-in-Zayto's-body morphing into the Red Ranger and Zayto-in-Amelia's-body morphing into the Pink Ranger, their bodies keep the same proportions, so the Red Ranger still has his male stunt double's frame with Zayto's voice, while the Pink Ranger still has the female stunt double's body type with Amelia's voice. Many lament that they didn't use the chance to give us the first male Pink Ranger (even if temporary) and third female Red Ranger.
  • Tough Act to Follow: Andrew Liang had the misfortune of facing this trope in succeeding the late Robert Axelrod as the voice of Lord Zedd, a highly-regarded villain in the franchise ever since his debut in the second-ever season of the series. In one of the most unfortunate outcomes of this trope, fans reacted poorly to his performance and began openly harassing him on social media over it, which resulted in Zedd being recasted with Fred Tatasciore in Cosmic Fury
  • Unexpected Character:
    • The Morphin Masters are a major element of several Boom! Studios Power Rangers comics arcs, but like most things introduced in that continuity most never expected them to make the jump to the TV show. Those who don't know the comics would have last heard the term all the way back in 1993, where they were the source of an Egg MacGuffin in the original series that was eventually lost to both sides—they're basically a footnote in their original episode. Many were surprised to hear them not only referred to by name but also appear in person in the series' premiere. "Unexpected Guest" reveals that they had a big hand in the battle betwen good and evil.
    • Mick Kanic from Power Rangers Ninja Steel. He's certainly not a disliked character, and most fans like when Kelson Henderson makes an appearance, but many were surprised when promotional photos featuring him interacting with the Rangers and Solon leaked, especially since there's seemingly no connection between his original season and this one. The title of the episode he appears in even lampshades this and it's revealed that he's on the search for the "Nexus Prism" again.
    • Lord Zedd appearing in Episode 14. Early episode descriptions mentioning the character left some fans hyped and some somewhat puzzled. Then an actual photo from the episode showing a glimpse of the the Zedd costume cropped up on social media. Fans were cautious, believing it to be some kind of elaborate scare tactic by the Rangers to teach a cocky Ollie a lesson in fear, or a monster taking Zedd's form, but then the episode premiered on Canal J in France and it became clear as crystal that not only was this Lord Zedd a literal reincarnation of the real deal from when he was at his most serious, and most evil, but he also managed to escape the Rangers at the end of the story, setting up potentially further appearances in the series, and maybe beyond!
    • The trailer for season 2 reveals that a major antagonist, Void Queen, Santaura's empowered form,, will be portrayed using Madame Noir's suit and unlike Baron Nero's costume used for Cosmo Royale, the costume won't be modified at all.
    • Commander Shaw getting in touch with the Rangers in episode 12 of DF season two to inform them that the son of Lokar, one of Rita Repulsa's God-like minions is on a rampage. At one point, the Beast Morphers team, through Go-Busters footage, are shown to be in the midst of battling it. Later, Shaw again contacts the Rangers to inform them that Zedd has infiltrated Grid Battleforce, retrieved his staff, and broken Scrozzle out of prison, the next episode establishes that Scrozzle is now Zedd's chief minion.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Ollie in "Cut Off". While all the gadgets he brought along on the camping trip did end up saving the day, the smug way he showed off their practically redundant features, coupled with his overly hostile reaction to the other Rangers declining to use them (this being right after his self-swinging hammock sent Zayto flying, giving them a good reason to do so), makes it difficult to see him as in the right.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The CGI for the Baby Pachy Zord is phenomenal.
  • Watched It for the Representation: Most viewers got into the show after "The Matchmaker" reveals Izzy and Fern's status as the first lesbian couple of the series with episodes revolving around their relationship being the best character writing for the show.
  • Win Back the Crowd: Many fans weren't on board with Mick Kanic appearing in an episode. However "Unexpected Guest" proved to be one of the best episodes of Dino Fury so far as it uses the Nexus Prism — which Mick is searching for — to expand on the lore of the Morphin Masters and has Mick better utilize his shapeshifting ability too.
  • The Woobie:
    • Poor Javi. It was implied in his debut episode that his father, Warden Garcia, didn't approve of his love for music. Stego Search expands on this more, showing off a Parental Favoritism to Izzy (who is his step-daughter) and even tried to take away his keytar back to the store and berated Javi for getting Izzy injured (completely unaware that both his children are Power Rangers). Thankfully "Jam Session" has him and his father reconcile.
    • Amelia goes through the wringer in the final arc of the show, desperate to find anything about her family and immediately thinking a wish to see them went wrong, and learning that Pop-Pop isn't her real grandfather, that she's Rafkonian and her mom and dad are the Big Bads of the series. Thankfully, she finally reunites with her parents and absolutely deserved her happy ending.
