Sandbox / Specs Of Awesome Check

Go To

Standard "Awesome/badass/etc. X" ZCE/tropeworthiness wick check for Specs of Awesome, a type of trope format that's known to be chairs.

Wicks checked 62/62. It was supposed to be 50/50, but I went overboard.

  • Quick wick results:
    • 22/62 are "X is badass and happens to wear glasses" chairs-y examples, or 48%.
    • 28/62 are ZCEs and vague potholes, or 45%.
    • 1/62 are "glasses indicate badassery full context examples", or ≈2%
    • 11/62 are misuse and other unsorted examples, or 18%.

  • Long analysis: The trope is full of chairs-y examples that are just, "trait + appearance item", with barely any connection between the two, meaning you can replace the trait and the item with anything and they'd make the same "trope"/meaning. Many of the examples have partial/zero context examples or are vague potholes. The rest misuse the trope for gushing about the glasses or how cool the badass character, or objectively describe how awesome the glasses are, not the wearer. There seems to be no way to salvage this trope.

  • Solutions:
    • Cut.
    • Disambiguate between Cool Shades, Four Eyes, Zero Soul, Scary Shiny Glasses, and possibly other tropes.
    • Don't know if this is viable or not, but retool the trope into "glasses indicate badassery" (or make it clear if it's already defined this way) and clean up ZCEs and misuse.
