Fanfic / A Certain Dark Railgun and Imagine Breaker

Go To

Written by Soluxy, A Certain Dark Railgun and Imagine Breaker is a combined A.U. of A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun. The setting of the fanfic is much Darker and Edgier than either of the canon series, with Misaka Mikoto being more ruthless and willing to commit murder in her attempts to stop the Level 6 shift of the Sisters Arc while a certain Imagine Breaker comes around to be by her side in this time of turmoil.

Timeline:

- Radio Noise Sisters Arc (completed): Ch 1 - 5

- Russian Demo Arc - Moscow (completed): Ch 6 - 10

- Angels Fall when Demons Rise (Inprogress): Ch 11 -

Intermission: (side-stories)

- Child Error

  • Acceptable Breaks from Canon: The Russian Demonstration Arc happens after the events of the Sisters Arc, whereas it began prior to the start of the Railgun manga.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • To a small degree. This version of Mikoto accepts clones as her siblings a bit earlier than canon one and is more openly affectionate with them.
      • Her relationship with Touma is changed to having him being her First Friend prior to her meeting with Kuroko, which largely contributes to her Sanity Slippage in the fanfic by emulating his habits of confrontation. She also gets into a three-way relationship with him and Shokuhou Misaki.
      • Also, her friendship with Kuroko will eventually be strained to the point that they'll become enemies.
    • Touma enforces this onto both Stiyl and Kanzaki at the end of the Index Arc, making sure that they don't keep their distance from Index by walking out of her life as "cool side-characters" again, leading to the three of them to Earn Your Happy Ending by rekindling some of their lost friendship and having a shared guardianship of Index.
    • Touma's relationship with the numerous girls he attracted is confirmed to be polymonogamous romantic, and those girls include Kumokawa Seria, Shokuhou Misaki, Fukiyose Seiri, Tsukuyomi Komoe, Index Librorum Prohibitorum, and Himegami Aisa by the time of the Sisters Arc finale. The list goes on... with Kanzaki Kaori and Misha Kreutzev (Archangel Michael possessing Sasha Kreutzev's body) in the Angels Fall when Demons Rise Arc. However, the two girls in the main pairing will be Mikoto and Misaki for him.
    • Misaki's Anchored Ship with Touma is reoccurring thing throughout the canon series, as it's likely that even if the latter does remember her, she probably wouldn't get her feelings reciprocated. Furthermore, she and Mikoto started out as rivals with Teeth-Clenched Teamwork before evolving into a Friendly Rivalry. Here, she's the main love interest for both Touma and Mikoto.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: While he wasn't unattractive in canon, this version of Touma is described to be 185 cm tallnote  and heavily muscular, making him fit the description of Tall, Dark, and Handsome.
  • Adaptational Badass: Both Mikoto and Touma get this treatment, being much more powerful than their canon counterparts.
  • Adaptational Curves: This version of Touma is much taller and beefier than in canon, as Soluxy states that he has the build of Ōsawa Akatsuki and the abs of Killua Zoldyck.
  • The Alcoholic: Timofey F. Stanislav.
  • Anti-Hero:
    • Touma is this for not only being a Japanese Delinquent, but is willing to commit murder in order to save those in front of him. Also, he'll get much darker as the story goes on and will edge into a Villain Protagonist.
    • Like in canon, Misaki is this here as well but is more of a "chaotic neutral".
  • Anyone Can Die: Don't get too attached to certain characters, as Soluxy will pull non-stop in this story.
  • Battle Trophy: Mikoto kept severed heads of Artyom and Erica after she defeated them on her belt, Predator-style for the second half of chapter 10.
  • Big "YES!": Elizalina and her crew of "adventurers" are fairly upbeat about their extermination missions.
  • Blood Knight: One of Touma and Mikoto's favorite pastimes prior to the story, is going around beating up punks.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Between Vasilisa and Krans.
  • Central Theme: According to Soluxy, it'll be about morality, hypocrisy, imperfection, choosing what's easy, and struggling to do the right thing.
  • Composite Character:
    • Due to Accelerator being killed off in chapter 4 of the story, Mikoto will take on his roles in the story arcs centered around him in canon.
    • For Touma, he'll be taking over Hamazura's story arcs due to him being planned to die as well.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Heavily averted, as Touma is capable of acknowledging how he attracts the opposite gender and is capable of reciprocating those feelings as well.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: A recurring example of the fanfic's Bloodier and Gorier nature.
    • What Mikoto inflicted towards the 400 researchers and ITEM, going into great detail on how she killed them. Also, Touma himself was willing to kill Accelerator by giving a gruesome No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
    • It also happens to a lot of people during the 'epidemic' of so-called decaying death, including Minori.
  • Dark Fic: The story has little to almost none of the comedic tones or idealism shown in the original source material, with the amount of violence and death happening at a horrific Bloodier and Gorier level, whether they're committed by the main characters or not, and how it affects them psychologically will be completely serious and Played for Drama.
  • Death by Adaptation: At the beginning of the story, a lot of people died due to Mikoto and Touma's actions on several different events. For Mikoto, she killed 400 researchers and ITEM (Mugino Shizuri, Kinuhata Saiai, Takitsubo Rikou, and Frenda Seivelun) while Touma, later on, kills Accelerator. Hamazura Shiage also dies, but how he does is not confirmed by Soluxy yet.
  • Deuteragonist: Since Mikoto is the main character of the overall story, Touma is the second main character whose importance drives the story forward in their dynamic. Also, Misaki will be the second leading character to Mikoto on the Railgun side of the story.
  • Domestic Abuse: Timofey F. Stanislav is very quick to anger, which resulted in multiple divorces and all of his adult children leaving home throughout his life.
  • Double Standard: Mikoto justifies her ideas of killing the entire world if it creates safe haven for her sisters by regarding them and the rest of humanity as two different groups, comparable to puppies and ants respectively. She fails to realize that this is exactly what Accelerator had been doing, only in reverse.
  • Fallen Hero: What Mikoto is at the start of the fic, and soon, Touma would be joining her in this status as the story goes on.
  • First Love: According to Soluxy, Mitsuari Ayu was technically the first girl who Touma had feelings for, but after her (failed) suicide, Kumokawa Seria became his first official girlfriend.
  • Harem Seeker: Unlike in canon, Touma is dead-set on sleeping with any girl he's close with and creating a polyamorous relationship with many girls. This is due to his Seria teaching him that having multiple relationships is "normal".
  • Heroic Lineage: Afon P. Sorokin, or rather, Edward William Peter Vladimir. Who is also a Saint.
  • Immortality Begins at Twenty: Sashura V. Makarova, the vampire.
  • It's Personal: Boris betrays his comrades to get a shot at avenging his son, murdered by Sashura. It doesn't end well.
  • I Will Find You: Although the author states that Touma believes Ayu to be dead, the boy with the dragon tattoo continues on searching for her in Academy City, all while refusing to believe she's gone. Of course, it's deconstructed as all he found were dead ends, along with it being treated as a desperate attempt of clinging onto hope while the nagging feeling of doubt always appears in the back of his mind.
  • Last-Second Chance: Touma actually gives Accelerator one last chance to leave before killing him. His opponent decides to not take it and was in for the worst pain of his life.
  • My Greatest Failure: This time, Touma has two of these in his life. The first one is where he failed to save Ayu from committing suicide (but also desperately searching for her despite numerous dead-ends), and failing to stop Mikoto from going off the deep end in her attempts to save her sisters.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • It's subtle, but in novels, Mikoto almost always refers to the sisters as "those girls", despite accepting them as family. In the fic, she always calls them "my little sisters" or "my beloved sisters" to showcase how much she loves them, to the point of becoming a Fallen Hero.
    • Touma's current characterization and descend into a Fallen Hero like Mikoto is eerily similar to how he was seen by everyone in Othinus' first recreation of the world, Version_Alpha, in NT 9. Being an "Incarnation of Violence" for the problems caused as a result of his Chronic Hero Syndrome being emphasized rather the good that came out of it.
  • No-Sell:
    • Nothing that Mikoto attacks Touma with at their confrontation on the bridge could scratch him.
    • During the time he faced against Stiyl and Kanzaki in the Index Arc of this fic, neither one of them was able to injure Touma. The latter especially considering her status as a Saint, along with using two of her strongest attacks such as Breaker of God and Yuisen.
  • Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here: The driver who Mikoto is with refuses to get any closer than 20 kilometres to the border between Russia and Elizalina Alliance, leading to her being forced to walk the rest of the way to her next demonstration.
  • Nothing Personal: Touma's brutal murder of Accelerator wasn't truly personal on his part as he can sympathize with the latter for being similar. He did this in order to prove his resolve to Mikoto, who's already going through a Villainous BSoD for her Face–Heel Turn.
  • Really Gets Around: At the start of the fic, Touma has already slept with Kumokawa Seria, Shokuhou Misaki, Fukiyose Seiri, Tsukuyomi Komoe, Index Librorum Prohibitorum, and Himegami Aisa. The number of girls will increase as the story goes on.
  • Sex for Solace: Whenever Touma's mind gets stress from the usual dealings of his misfortune, he'll turn to sexual intercourse with the girls he's close to as a form of relief.
  • Sore Loser: In Touma's recap of the events from the Index Arc, both Stiyl Magnus and Kanzaki Kaori had this attitude from being easily crushed by the former three times that week. This leads to them not only challenging Touma constantly out of their desire to protect Index but also out of wounded pride from being easily beaten by a complete stranger with no ties to the Magic Side. Humorously, this attitude doesn't impress Touma at all and it was a waste of their time as the deadline for Index's annually mind-wipe was getting closer.
  • Villainous Lineage: Sashura Vlad Makarova Corvinus is a daughter of Vlad the Impaler.
  • Villain Protagonist: If the title of the fic doesn't tip you off, then Soluxy's confirmation that Mikoto being the main protagonist of the story should be one, especially how much of Fallen Hero she had become at the beginning of the fic. All the while, Touma is the second most important character.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Inverted. Touma says this to Mikoto at the end of chapter 1, especially for the actions she took in her quest to end the Level 6 Shift Project.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Sashura V. Makarova murders children to feed on their souls, as anybody past the age of ten is too rotted by sins for her taste. Also, Mikoto herself crosses this boundary by murdering the youngest son of Timofey.
  • You Are Not Alone: Touma declares this to Mikoto when the latter has gone too far as a monster to save her sisters. As he's willing to become a monster himself out of guilt for failing to prevent Mikoto from committing mass homicide and to be with one of the girls he loves, and it's best shown as he gave slow and painful death to Accelerator while invoking a Slasher Smile.
  • You Are Worth Hell:
    • What are the reasons for which Mikoto is willing to become a "devil" in order to save her sisters is yet to be revealed, but it's what kickstarts the events of the fic.
    • Touma himself is willing to become just as bad as what Mikoto is in order to atone for not being able to spot the latter's turmoil before she became too far gone, along with proving his love and resolve to her so she wouldn't be alone.
