There's no question that the first World War was hard, and neither was the aftermath easy - the British Empire saw the loss of Ireland. The Great Depression. Strikes and uncertainties and hunger.

But, for all that, the sun is not setting on the British Empire. From Canada to South Africa to east Africa to India to the British Isles themselves there's still a common vision - or at least a single king.

With all that territory, and with perhaps the greatest navy the world has ever seen, there are privileges and there are responsibilities. This new war will smash against the limits of both.

British Belles in General

Destroyers (DD)

     V-class

Vampire (D68)

Voiced by: Kristen McGuire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/125_big_1.jpeg
Fearless. Forceful.
"I know I'm slow, but I would have gotten the upper hand eventually! Still, I suppose I owe you a debt of gratitude. Thanks, Captain - call me Vampire."

Belle of the destroyer Vampire. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Cute Little Fangs: As expected of somebody with her name, her canines are a tiny bit more pronounced than other Belles.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Being the personification of a warship aside, she still defies a lot of tropes about vampires, being incredibly fond of garlic (a well-known weakness of vampires), for example.
  • Vampire Vords: Despite otherwise speaking with an English accent, she speaks her W's as V's.

Vendetta (D69)

Voiced by: Chloe Eves

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/198_big_7.jpeg
Calculating. Vicious. Skeptical.
"HA! Well fought, Captain. But your bloodlust needs work. I, Vendetta, will make a murderer out of you yet!"

Belle of the destroyer Vendetta. Available for rescue in the first half of the 1940 January event.

  • Axe-Crazy: Certainly is, towards the Morganas. She likes to launch into gory descriptions of how she... deals with them. She's been described by Word of God as "slightly unhinged".
  • Awesome Aussie: She's proud of her Australian service, and certainly has the grit to match.
  • Berserk Button: A crew member called Jenkins. So much that her happy thoughts consist of him falling overboard when she's out of life rafts.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Despite appearances, she does care very deeply about her fellow V-class sisters. To the extent she considers it a weakness.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She's very hot-blooded, to say the least.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: She keeps a collection of knives on her person at all times. This does not help to reduce her serial killer-like image.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her eyes are stated to turn bloody crimson when she gets excited or angry.
  • Serial Killer: From her proclamation that she'll make a murderer out of the Captain, to her possession of a Best Killing Hat, to her near-constant bloodlust, she definitely gives off this impression.
  • Tsundere: The Spicy variety. A major plot point in her story lies in the discovery of a a notebook which she uses to gush about the Captain, which she tries to hide from them.

     River-class

Saguenay (D79)

Voiced by: Erin Fitzgerald

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/126_big_5.jpeg
Spiritual. Quick. Dangerous.
"Hello, Captain, I'm Saguenay. Competent you are, but only someone with a dastardly streak will make it through this war alive. Do you fit the bill?"

Belle of the destroyer Saguenay. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Badass Native: While she's not entirely Iroquois, being of mixed descent, she still holds a lot of pride for her Innu heritage, and looks to the history of her people for inspiration in combat.
  • Braids, Beads and Buckskins: Certainly has features of this in her outfit (Braids? Check. Buckskins? Check.) Justified though as following with the game's care for character design, a lot of aspects are accurate to the Innu tribe, which she claims descent from.
  • Hunter Trapper: Is incredibly skilled at hunting and making traps, for animal and Morgana (and an unaware Mahan) alike.
  • Interfaith Smoothie: Reflecting her mixed heritage, her beliefs are an amalgamation from the people who have settled along her namesake river. She is as likely to pray to the Christian God as well as the Mishtapeuat.
  • Superstitious Sailors: She is an outstanding example in an already quite superstitious service. Not only does she hold the unique superstitions associated with sailors, but also those of the Innu people.
  • Superstition Episode: Said superstitions, despite the Captain's skepticism, often hold true in her story. She herself justifies it by saying most superstitions have an element of truth, and there is knowledge to be gained by understanding them.
  • Tribal Face Paint: Spots a stripe on each of her cheeks.

     B-class

Bulldog (H91)

Voiced by: Nicky Lloyd-Williams

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/118_big_8.jpeg
Healthy. Courageous.
"Captain, I'm Bulldog. I hope you don't mind the press. With me by your side, reporters will never be too far away."

Belle of the destroyer Bulldog. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game and a starter Belle option for British captains.

     Tribal-class

The class as a whole:

  • More Dakka: The Tribal-class are renowned as some of the greatest gun destroyers of WWII, as they have eight four-inch guns in four twin mounts. This gives them far more gun firepower than most other destroyers.
  • Proud Warrior Race: The entire class was named after various tribes that the Admiralty deemed fierce warriors, whether as opponents or allies in the various wars that the British Empire was involved in.

Cossack (F03)

Voiced by: Lydia Mackay

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/119_big_9.jpeg
Hawkish. Adventurous.
"Those Morganas were ferocious, and I was willing to fight them to the death... fortunately, your presence made that unnecessary. Captain, I'm Cossack."

Belle of the destroyer Cossack. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game and a starter Belle option for British captains.

  • Absurd Phobia: Cossack has a deathly superstitious fear of cats. In her view, they pose as grave a danger to the ship as the Morganas themselves, and spends the bulk of her story trying to track down and destroy a stray that had wandered on board. She's persuaded to let it stay in the end.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Cossack sees very little point in defensive maneuvers, preferring to actively bring the fight to the Morganas.
  • Blood Knight: Eager to strike at every opportunity, Cossack lives for battle. The fight is everything for the life of a warrior like her.
  • Superstitious Sailors: Very. Aside from her aversion of cats mentioned above (she hates owls as well), she nearly refuses to transport a group of refugees because they're a group of thirteen.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cheesecake. Or, syrnyk, its Eastern European equivalent.

Zulu (F18)

Voiced by: Tina Marie Murray

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/138_big_9.jpeg
Vibrant. Spirited.
"Captain, Captain! My name is Zulu, and I do believe a dance is in order after such a victory! Come, I'll teach you the steps."

Belle of the destroyer Zulu. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game and a starter Belle option for British captains.

  • Brits Love Tea: As the true-blue Brit that she is, Zulu appreciates and can make a good cuppa. Her signature is a refreshing black tea with a twist of lemongrass.
  • Darkest Africa: As her name suggests, she has her origins in the Zulu nation.
  • Immigrant Patriotism: Zig-Zagged as the Zulu kingdom was still part of the British Empire in the game's setting, thus rendering her a British subject. She identifies herself as a fully British Belle, if only of non-European background.
  • Magical Negro: Finally being comfortable in her identity as Brit and Zulu, she eventually decides to play up this trope, asking her crew for chicken blood and human bones for her tribal rituals, to make fun of their ignorant stereotyping.
  • Never Accepted in His Hometown: Despite her desire to present herself as a fully British lady and a loyal warrior of the the Empire, her crew never really accepted her as such – one particularly cruel example involves a petition being drawn up to rename her after a Lake District town. Her struggle to go beyond the racist norms and stereotyping of the time between forms the core of her story.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Stands at 6'/1.83m despite being the Belle of a destroyer. As of the beta the developers have not revealed what factors into the height of a Belle.

Nubian (F36)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/129_big_3.jpeg
Cultivated. Adventurous.
"Those Morganas are more wily than most prey, so we hunters must never let down our guards. Captain, I'm Nubian - I look forward to hunting alongside you."

Belle of the destroyer Nubian. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Battle Trophy: Nubian frequently takes trophies from the Morganas she has sunk. From Avarice's necklace to Despair's armor plating, she has enough to fill up an entire Trophy Room's worth of them.
  • Bedlah Babe: With a head covering and bared midriff, her design invokes aspects of this trope.
  • Creepy Souvenir: Trophies aside, she decides to keep a human skull from Starvation's guardrail as a reminder of the gravity of her purpose. She's eventually persuaded to have it be buried.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Her punishment for letting her guns rust is to put rust shavings in the socks of the sailor responsible for maintaining them.
  • Hunter of Monsters: Is an avid hunter, and likes to think of the Morgana war as one great hunt in the service of humanity.
  • Religious Bruiser: A devout Muslim, Nubian carries out her daily prayers regularly and is able to quote from the Quran with ease. She also sees it as a divine mission to send the demonic Morganas back to the depths.
  • Trophy Room: Nubian's quarters serves as one, and is filled top to bottom with Morgana spoils. She has an empty space above her bunk, reserved for when she finally takes the head of one of the Morganas.

Light Cruisers (CL)

     Danae-class

Delhi (D47)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/120_big_3.jpeg
Sharp. Cunning.
"Morganas are relentless. Only a cunning mind stands a chance against them. Captain, I'm Delhi, and I'd very much like to learn a thing or two from you."

Belle of the light cruiser Delhi. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

     Leander-class

Achilles (70)

Voiced by: Anna Priga

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/36_big_6.jpeg
Prideful. Arrogant. Passionate.
"My name is Achilles, Captain. I do believe that with the two of us fighting side by side, our power will rival that of the gods."

Belle of the light cruiser Achilles. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Pet's Homage Name: Her two pigeons are named Lygyron and Pyrisous, both of them alternate names for her namesake, Achilles.

Orion (85)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/130_big_5.jpeg
Cheeky. Proud.
"Imagine my luck, to be rescued by such a good-looking captain. I am Orion, and I'm as competent a hunter as I am a flirt."

Belle of the light cruiser Orion. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Chivalrous Pervert: Orion is a shameless flirt who makes no secret of her romantic and sexual relations, and is no less committed to stopping the Morgana for it.
  • Dude Magnet: A common boast of Orion's is her fair amount of male admirers.

Perth (D29)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/perth_9.jpeg
Cheerful. Adaptable.
"What courage, what might! Captain, my name is Perth - you must allow me to compose a song in celebration of this victory."

Belle of the light cruiser Perth. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

     Town-class
The class as a whole contains examples of:

Southampton (C83)

Voiced by: Elsie Lovelock

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/136_big_7.jpeg
Conscientious. Reliable.
"Hello, Captain, I'm Southampton. Did you tear your uniform during that last battle? Don't worry, I'll have it mended in a jiffy."

Belle of the light cruiser Southampton. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Shear Menace: Not quite menacing, but Southampton does wield a giant pair of scissors as part of her rigging.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: Where other Belles are quite eager to go into firefights and leave the rest to their human crews, Southampton is content in the role of stitching up and mending any damage that the crews' uniforms might suffer after battle.

Sheffield (C24)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/134_big_6.jpeg
Rambunctious. Athletic.
"What, you've never seen a Belle on roller skates, before? It's the best way to travel! I'm Sheffield, Captain - thanks so much for your help back there!"

Belle of the light cruiser Sheffield. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Rollerblade Good: Sheffield wears well... roller skates, and has the upbeat personality to match.

Manchester (C15)

Voiced by: Minh Ton

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/187_big_5.jpeg
Energetic. Direct. Mischievous.
"These Morganas have no sense of humour or class consciousness! Let's give 'em what for, Captain, or my name isn't Manchester!"

Belle of the light cruiser Manchester. Available for rescue in the second half of the 1939 September event.

  • Batter Up!: As can be seen in her art, she carries a cricket bat, and in February 1940, she breaks her bat caving in a Murder's skull.
  • Chummy Commies: Manchester is a bright and cheery young woman who just so happens to read Marx and Engels and attempts to unionize her crew.
  • The Prankster: Manchester delights in playing practical jokes on people.

Edinburgh (C16)

Voiced by: Carrie Johnston

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/121_big_3.jpeg
Gracious. Bonny.
"Captain, Captain, what wonderful work! My name is Edinburgh, and... I appear to have lost one of my books. Mind helping me find it?"

Belle of the light cruiser Edinburgh. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

Belfast (C35)

Voiced by: Amanda Gish

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/belfast_4.jpeg
Well-Read. Philosophical. Voluble.

Belle of the light cruiser Belfast. Originally only available as a starter Belle to Kickstarter and PayPal backers, but was unlocked as a regular drop for all players a year after launch.

Heavy Cruisers (CA)

     County-class

Shropshire (73)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/135_big_8.jpeg
High-Spirited. Caretaking.
"Captain, are you all right? I'd hate if anything happened to you after you risked your life to come to my aid. My name is Shropshire, and I'm in your debt."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Shropshire. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

     York-class

Exeter (68)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/122_big_3.jpeg
Courageous. Knightly.
"How courageous of you, coming to my aid in such a way, Captain! My name is Exeter, and I'll freely admit my admiration for those unafraid to take action."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Exeter. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Trademark Favorite Food: She's very fond of drinking and collecting different teas from around the world. In fact, the first thing she can remember since her awakening is walking in the radio room and offering the radiomen tea (and scaring the hell out of them in the process).

Battlecruisers (BC)

     Admiral-class

Hood (51)

Voiced by: Geordie Holly

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/127_big_5.jpeg
Lovely. Refined. Proud.
"Captain, you've done the whole of the British Empire a great service by saving the Mighty Hood today. Thank you for your courageous actions."

Belle of the battlecruiser Hood. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Parasol of Prettiness: Hood carries a parasol in her design, which adds to her aura of class and elegance, something which she goes to great lengths to cultivate.
  • Tempting Fate: Hood is fond of boasting of her reputation as the "Mighty Hood" and an invincible warship, which is clearly meant to foreshadow her historical demise at the hands of Bismarck.

Battleships (BB)

     Queen Elizabeth-class

Warspite (03)

Voiced by: Amber Cunliffe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/137_big_1.jpeg
Solemn. Stately.
"Captain, I am Warspite. Coming to my aid... it was very courageous of you. If somewhat impetuous. Please, take more care in the future."

Belle of the battleship Warspite. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Chainmail Bikini: Warspite wears this as part of her outfit, despite being a decently armored battleship. It's not as egregious as the standard fare, though.

     Nelson-class

Nelson (28)

Voiced by: Tamara Fritz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/128_big_1.jpeg
Proud. Ambitious.
"You do your homeland proud, Captain. My name is Nelson, and I believe I see great things in your future."

Belle of the battleship Nelson. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

Light Aircraft Carriers (CVL)

     Hermes-class

Hermes (95)

Voiced by: Eleonora Varvagianni

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/123_big_8.jpeg
Quirky. Adaptable.
"Captain, what a battle! I must pass word of it along to the other Royal Navy Belles. The rescue of Hermes will be the talk of the town!"

Belle of the light aircraft carrier Hermes. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Winged Humanoid: Being the personification of an aircraft carrier and named after the winged god of messengers, it's quite clear where Hermes' wings come from. Whether they work or not is another question.

Aircraft Carriers (CV)

     Courageous-class

Glorious (77)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/victory_belles_glorious.png
Arrogant. Wily. Impetuous.
"Captain! I meant to do that. And... that. But thank you for your help. The name's Glorious."

Belle of the aircraft carrier Glorious. Available as a bundle-only Belle in the 1940 February event.

     Ark Royal-class

Ark Royal (91)

Voiced by: Katie Flamman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/44_big_9.jpeg
Witty. Pleasant. Beautiful.
"My name is Ark Royal, Captain. Your service to me was really quite sweet. ...Speaking of sweet, how does a piece of celebratory cake sound?"

Belle of the aircraft carrier Ark Royal. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Pungeon Master: Ark Royal is notorious for inserting several puns in every conversation she has. Even her spoken lines feature gems like:
"The Black Sea. Truly the darkest letter in the alphabet."

Submarines (SS)

     S-class

Salmon (N65)

Voiced by: Eileen Montgomery

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salmon_0.jpeg
Honorable. Competitive.
"You got this fish off the hook, didn't you, Captain? My apologies, it was a lousy pun. Let me try again - I'm Salmon, Captain, and I thank you for your help."

Belle of the submarine Salmon. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

     U-class

Ursula (N59)

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/193_big.jpeg
Shy. Fearless. Decisive.
"Thanks, Captain. Now that the battle's over, it's all right with me if you do the talking. I'm Ursula."

Belle of the submarine Ursula. Available for rescue in the first half of the 1939 December event.

Armed Merchant Cruisers (AMC)

     R-class

Rawalpindi

Voiced by: Aditi Thirani

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/132_big_6.jpeg
Cheeky. Brazen. Tenacious.
"Captain, I'm Rawalpindi. I realise an old armed merchant cruiser might not strike fear into the hearts of our enemies, but I promise, I'm tougher than I look."

Belle of the armed merchant cruiser Rawalpindi. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game and a starter Belle option for British captains.

  • Hot-Blooded: Rawalpindi has taken to her conversion to an armed merchant cruiser with gusto and is quite eager to get in on the action and use the guns she now carries.

     Queen Mary-class

Queen Mary

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/131_big_6.jpeg
Genteel. Stylish. Cultured.
"Captain, have you been much introduced into good, proper society? Don't worry, under the care of the Queen Mary, you will be."

Belle of the armed merchant cruiser Queen Mary. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Exact Words: She states her function as a Belle is to protect her ship, hence her preference to flee rather than try to fight.
  • Joke Character: She may be fast and have enormous hitpoints by virtue of her massive displacement, but as an ocean liner turned troop transport, she has no armor or armament and has no hope of carrying more armament than a few anti-air guns or a single torpedo launcher. Even her massive hitpoint pool is misleading as her complete lack of armor leaves her highly vulnerable to flooding.
