A flesh-eating darkness youkai once known for her voracious appetite for humans. After being defeated by the Hakurei Miko, she ends up befriending and living with her, often looking after her daughter while she goes to do her job.

In Touhou Reireimu, as a result of a previous event, she's been transformed into a child youkai with her ribbon acting as a seal.

  • Ax-Crazy: Does not take remembering her memories of her past life with Reimu's mother well.
  • Back from the Dead: Is brought back to life thanks to Reimu's newly-obtained Fantasy Nature.
  • Big Eater: Her appetite for humans is so great that in a flashback, she's seen sitting on a large pile of human skulls. According to her, no matter how much she eats, her hunger can never be sated.
"Nothing satisfies me. I eat and eat and eat and eat... But no matter how much I eat, I never feel satisfied."
  • Bite of Affection: As a child, she bites Reimu as her way of showing affection, especially on her butt.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Befriends Reimu and her mother when the former offers half of her rice ball to her while she's bound up and starving.
  • Berserker Tears: Visibly cries when fighting Reimu's mother after the latter admits their friendship was a lie.
  • Cool Big Sis: Acts like one towards Reimu, often playing with her while her mother goes off to do her job.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Comes with being a flesh-eating youkai.

  • Fountain of Youth: She's transformed into a child after eating Reimu's mother.
  • Ghost Memory: As a result of devouring Reimu's mother, she absorbed all her memories. Seeing how the humans treated her friend is what drives Rumia to want to destroy all of Gensokyo.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Like with Reimu's mother, she has a soft smile as she dies, thanking Reimu and her mother for giving her such a wonderful life.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: As a flesh-eating youkai, she primarily feeds on humans. Though her feeding eventually reaches a point where Yukari decides to confront her and tell her to stop.
  • Laughing Mad: Laughs maniacally when Reimu's mother attacks her after claiming her presence is no longer needed.
  • Mama Bear: After losing Reimu in Yuuka's flower field, upon hearing her scream, Rumia wastes no time running to her to see if she's safe. Luckily for her, Yuuka was simply tickling the child.
  • Only Mostly Dead: After dying, Rumia ends up in a space between worlds where she reunites with Reimu's mother.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Her presence alone is what allows nighttime to exist in Gensokyo. According to Reimu's mother, if she were to die, nighttime would cease to exist.
  • Parental Substitute: Acts almost like a second mother towards Reimu and seems to spend more time raising her, at one point humorously berating Reimu's actual mother for failing to raise Reimu as a proper woman.
"Waahh, at this rate Reimu's going to grow up to be a money grubbing alcoholic!"
  • Repressed Memories: Her memories of the Hakurei Miko and Reimu are kept sealed by her ribbon. It breaking and the subsequent flood of memories kickstarts the incident in Reireimu.

  • You Can't Fight Fate: As a flesh-eating youkai, Rumia needs to eat humans else she ends up starving to death. She's able to hold off this urge in the time spent with the Reimu and her mother, but her hunger becomes too much for her and she has to leave them for their safety.

    Reimu Hakurei
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/or_reimu.png
Click here to see her as a teenager

The daughter of the Hakurei Miko, an adorably kind and sweet-hearted child who seems to want to play with any new person she comes across. She has an especially close bond with Rumia.

In Touhou Reireimu, she's now a teenager working as the current Hakurei Miko. Having developed a rather rude and apathetic attitude, deep down she's still as kind-hearted as ever.

  • Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: At first, Reimu doesn't seem to care about Rumia having to be killed due to her seal being broken, only commenting how quiet it is without her. It doesn't take long for her to realize how much she genuinely enjoys Rumia's company.
  • Cheerful Child: And how!
  • Happily Adopted: A flashback reveals that Reimu was actually an orphan adopted by the previous Hakurei Miko after a youkai attack.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Reimu's Fantasy Nature is able to draw out the power of a Hakurei Miko's heart and convert it into some useful for a fight. However, she's been unable to use this power properly as a result of hiding her true feelings while feigning apathy. It isn't until after her battle with Rumia that Reimu is finally able to use her Fantasy Nature by realizing what's truly in her heart: a desire to be with Rumia.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite how rude and crabby she acts as a teenager, she's still just as kind as she was when she was a child, especially towards youkai like Rumia.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Has her memories of her mother wiped by Yukari after her mother's death so that she wouldn't be traumatized by it.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Is able to take down Yukari with the help of Marisa when the former attempts to stop her from going after Rumia.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Though she tried not to admit it, Reimu couldn't get into her role as a youkai exterminator because she didn't feel comfortable with the idea of having to kill others. This is what ultimately pushes her to create the Spell Card System as a way to resolve incidents with youkai non-lethally.
  • Tsundere: Of the harsh variety: Thought she may seem mean-spirited and rude, in reality Reimu's actually very nice and kind, although she attempts to hide this.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Child: Once an adorably kind and loving child, as the Hakurei Miko she's very rude towards others. Thought it's made clear that she still has her kindness.

    The Hakurei Miko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/or_miko.png
Click here to see her without her mask

The previous Hakurei Miko and Reimu's mother, who's often seen wearing a mask. A youkai exterminator who had befriended the flesh-eating youkai Rumia, she allows her to watch over her daughter as she performs her job.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Often referred to as the Clumsy Miko-san.
  • Alcoholic Parent: She enjoys drinking, something which Rumia calls her out for at one point. Thought this doesn't impair her relationship with Reimu at all.
  • Beneath the Mask: Despite her seemingly carefree attitude, Reimu's mom is aware of how much both humans and youkai are terrified of her, and wears masks in order to hide from their condescending and hate-filled stares. She even admits to Rumia that she's worried how Reimu will react to how others see them when she becomes the next Hakurei Miko.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: She lies to Rumia, claiming that their friendship was all just a sham, in order to get her to fight her.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Though she may act eccentric and goofy, when it comes to taking down youkai, she excels tremendously.
  • Cool Mask: Wears a variety of familiar-looking masks.
  • The Dreaded: Due to how effective she was as a youkai exterminator, youkai greatly feared her. Eventually, humans began to fear her as well.
  • Eaten Alive: Her fate at the hands of Rumia.
  • The Faceless: Throughout the first half of Osana Reimu, she's always seen wearing a mask. It's not until Rumia convinces her to take off the mask for Reimu's sake that she decides to show her face.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She smiles as she dies, thanking Rumia for being with her and Reimu.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Allows herself to be eaten by Rumia in order to prevent her from starving to death and not have to eat anymore humans.
  • No Name Given: She's never given a name, only referred to as the Hakurei Miko.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks a lot like a grown-up Reimu, which is impressive considering the two are not blood-related.
  • Troubled, but Cute: She's adorable, like her daughter Reimu, but she's repressing a lot of negative feelings from the way youkai and humans treat her.
  • Unperson: All traces of her existence is erased thanks to Yukari wiping everyone's memories of her, though this was done at her request in order to have Rumia live freely without guilt.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Since Rumia's existence is required for nighttime to occur in Gensokyo, Reimu's mother creates another version of Rumia, one without the need to eat humans, to replace Rumia and keep nighttime intact, telling the original that she's no longer needed. In the end, this is all revealed to be a lie.

    Yukari Yakumo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/or_yukari_6.png

A gap youkai and one of the Youkai Sages who helped found Gensokyo. A close acquaintance of the Hakurei Mikos, she sends one of them to take down Rumia when the latter begins eating way too many humans. In the present, she occasionally comes by to visit the Hakurei Shrine.

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Confesses her love to Reimu's mother after the latter's soul has passed on to the afterlife.
"Goodbye... The one who I loved..."
  • Batman Gambit: Yukari attempts to convince Rumia to start eating humans again to ensure that she's doesn't starve to death, and thus cause nighttime to cease existing in Gensokyo. To her surprise, Rumia adamantly makes it clear she refuses to eat humans anymore for Reimu and her mother's sake.
  • Berserk Button: As one of the founders of Gensokyo, threatening its existence is a good way to get on her bad side.
"No matter who you're working with or whatever your reasons, if you try to destroy my beloved Gensokyo... I will show no mercy."
  • Face Death with Dignity: When Rumia's darkness begins crushing the train she's currently inside of, Yukari makes no effort to escape and simply accepts her fate, reminiscing on her past time with Reimu and Rumia. Luckily, Ran manages to save her before she's killed.
  • Failure Gambit: She deliberately lost to Reimu and Marisa in order to convince herself that Reimu was capable of unlocking her Fantasy Nature and could stop Rumia before she destroyed Gensokyo.
  • Just Train Wrong: Uses her gap powers to direct several trains towards Rumia's darkness in an attempts to impede its growth.
  • Memory-Wiping Crew: Or one-woman Memory Wiping Crew in her case. Yukari goes about wiping the memories of Reimu's mother from people who may have known her, barring Yuuka, in an effort to prevent Rumia from remembering her. Though in Reimu's case, it's so that she wouldn't have to grieve her mother, and Yukari visibly cries having to do this.
  • Parental Substitute: It's implied at the end of Osana Reimu that she takes over raising Reimu following her mother's death.
  • Secret-Keeper: Due to having wiped away everyone else's memories, barring Yuuka, she's the only one who truly remembers the previous Hakurei Miko and what happened to Rumia.
  • Sleepyhead: In Reireimu, she has a tendency to suddenly fall asleep, which she blames on her old age.
  • Spared, but Not Forgiven: While Yukari allows child Rumia to be free as per the wishes of Reimu's mother, she still seems to hold some resentment over her for devouring her friend.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: With the help of Yuyuko, she creates a space between worlds so that Rumia could reunite with Reimu's mother.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: When Rumia's seal breaks and her darkness begins to consume Gensokyo, Yukari ultimately decides to have her killed to ensure that Gensokyo isn't destroyed by her, even fighting with Reimu and Marisa to prevent them from trying to stop Rumia. As it's later shown, this was not actually her intended plan.
  • Worf Had the Flu: At first, it's implied her weakened state is due to her old age, as she's unable to defeat Reimu and Marisa when they fight and using her gap powers in to stop Rumia severely tires her. However, it's later revealed that she's using most of her power to keep the space where Reimu's mother was waiting for Rumia intact.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She briefly considers killing a now-child Rumia after the latter had eaten Reimu's mother, but ultimately decides against it as her friend would have wanted Rumia to be able to live a normal and free life.

    Marisa Kirisame
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/or_marisa.png
Click here to see her as a teenager

A human magician, and Reimu's childhood friend. As a young kid, she was incredibly shy, so Rinnosuke brings her to the Hakurei shrine for her to make some new friends. Eventually, she and Reimu become inseperable.

In Touhou Reireimu, like Reimu, she's grown into a teenager and is now much more confident than before.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Stifles her laughter whenever Rumia bites Reimu's butt.
  • Ascended Extra: In Osana Reimu, Marisa is only featured prominently in episode 2 and briefly seen at the start of episode 3. In Reireimu, she has a much more prominent role as she assists Reimu in stopping Rumia.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Doesn't hesitate to call out Yukari when the latter reveals she plans to kill Rumia to stop her darkness from consuming Gensokyo.
  • Genki Girl: She's much more confident and energetic as a teenager, to the point that it would be hard to believe she was once a very shy child.
  • Prone to Tears: As a child, she was such a crybaby that even Reimu staring and smiling at her was enough to cause her to run away in tears.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: It wouldn't be Marisa if she didn't have her signature witch hat.
  • Shrinking Violet: Was known to be very shy as a child, which made it hard for her to make friends. Rinnosuke brings her to the Hakurei shrine to have her befriend Reimu, which thankfully succeeds.
