Humans

    Sora Kashiwagi

The protagonist, a high school student who lives with his aunt while his father travels the world in search of supernatural oddities. He owns the little mummy Mii-kun.

  • Action Survivor: It's shown that his initial fear of Mii-kun was due to his dad sending him various supernatural entities in the past that tried to kill him. When Mii-kun opens his casket, Sora's first instinct is to find something to use as a weapon. It ultimately leads to him having the most knowledge of mythical creatures and their behaviors.
  • Cuteness Overload: Suffers this frequently due to Mii-kun's childlike overtures of affection. When he meets the baku in Daichi's house, he immediately starts fawning over it and nuzzling it like it's a puppy.
  • Death Glare: Pulls a right terrifying one when chastising Tazuki for trying to remove Mii-kun's bandage, complete with a demonic aura.
  • House Husband: Due to his aunt's work schedule and his father being overseas, he is the one who does all the cooking and other chores in the house. He's quite good at it, and doesn't seem to have an issue with doing so.
  • Nice Guy: He's soft-spoken and kind to his human friends. Despite being afraid of Mii-kun at first, he quickly warms up to him and is very protective and motherly towards him.
  • Papa Wolf: Is highly protective of Mii-kun, and even willing to smack Tazuki for trying to remove Mii-kun's bandages.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He enjoys cooking and happily becomes a doting mother to Mii-kun (after he gets over his initial fear, of course). He is also very open with his feelings and fond of cute things (and absolutely not fond of scary things).
  • Supreme Chef: He's capable of making some pretty complicated dishes, at one point making pumpkin montblanc as a snack and making fancy sushi rolls with images in them. The cake he gave to Tazuki's sister also looks for the world like an entremet, which are extremely difficult French cakes.

    Tazuki Kamiya

Sora's best friend and classmate. A cool-looking guy who cares about his friends, even if he's not great at showing it. He owns the oni child, Conny.

  • Bookworm: Is shown to be very studious, and even helps Sora with his weaker subjects.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Tazuki continuously puts distance between himself and Conny. This is because when he was little, he was injured from failing to protect a dragon from a collector. As a result, he fears being attached in case anything happens to Conny.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: As a little boy, he found an injured dragon similar to Isao and tried to protect it from a man who was trying to take it. Tazuki was cornered in an abandoned building where the man presumably beat him and took the dragon. The impact of this event on Tazuki and his friendship with Sora is felt throughout the series.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Initially is more intellectually fascinated with Mii-kun and finds it amusing to taunt him by threatening to remove his bandages. However, Mii-kun's innocence and cuteness spur him to apologize and treat Mii-kun better.
    • Also acts prickly towards Conny, until Conny seemingly runs away. This eventually pushes him to try to be more honest with his feelings in general.
  • Precocious Crush: He’s had a crush on Sora’s aunt Kaede for a few years and is quite bad at hiding it, with Sora occasionally teasing him about it.
  • Terrible Artist: He is not very good at artwork, and it takes him several tries to make dolls for his little sister, Tsukiyo. He also is not very good at making sushi with artistic designs like Sora.

    Asa Motegi

Sora and Tazuki's classmate. Friendly and outgoing. She owns the little dragon, Isao.

  • Everyone's Baby Sister: The boys are incredibly nice to Motegi and are charmed by her kindness. On two occasions, Sora thinks that he wants Motegi to be his little sister.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Despite being a petite teenager, she's able to effortlessly hoist and fling entire bookcases across the room.
  • Nice Girl: Is friendly, upbeat, and helpful to everyone. Sora and Daichi compare her to an angel.
  • The Nicknamer: Motegi not only loves to give her friends nicknames, but also loves to get new nicknames.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: 148cm tall. Can beat adult oni at arm wrestling. It is of course the source of various comedic moments.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Is deathly afraid of lizards. Her friends find it ironic that she's afraid of lizards but has absolutely no problem with bugs. She's initially terrified of Isao because she thinks he's a giant lizard, but his behavior and her own shame at having tried to kill himnote  gets her to warm up to him.

     Daichi Tachiaki

A student at Sora's school. He suffers from chronic nightmares and owns the baku, Mukumuku.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Daichi becomes Sora's friend because Sora was the only one willing to listen to him and help him despite his erratic behavior.
  • Face of a Thug: Has this initially due to his chronic nightmares interfering with his sleep and adding to his reputation as a delinquent. It goes away once he's fully rested.
  • Gentle Giant: He's the tallest of the group and is very friendly and polite.
  • Japanese Delinquent: Is initially assumed to be this due to his bad temper, but it's revealed to be caused by his nightmare-induced insomnia. He's actually quite friendly on a full night's sleep.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Once he starts getting decent sleep, he's not bad to look at.
  • Lovable Coward: Is a bit timid dealing with supernatural creatures, and is terrified of Mukumuku when he first sees him, assuming the little baku is eating his soul. Justified in that his chronic nightmares have made him a bit squirrely.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Invoked in the rest of his class when he shows up to school after sleeping for three days straight. They're completely shocked that he's now nice, calm, and clear-headed, as opposed to the unhinged, violent Jerkass he presented as before due to his sleep deprivation.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Subverted. He nearly hits Motegi, but his lack of sleep had made him so delirious he didn't know what he was doing. He apologizes profusely once he's feeling better.

     Kaede Kashiwagi

Sora's aunt. She works multiple jobs.

  • Action Survivor: While not shown on-screen, she is well aware of her brother's tendency to send dangerous mementos, and had the presence of mind to check to see if Aayan was dangerous before leaving him for Sora.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Slips into this from time to time, either because she puts on her glasses when she shouldn't or because she was genuinely shocked that Sora brought a girlnote  home.
  • Bifauxnen: Kaede moonlights as a model, and most of her squeeing fangirls think that she's a man.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Downplayed, but she still naps in the casket Mii-kun was shipped in and uses a deadly mandrake as a freakin' alarm clock! Oh, and she has a split personality that only manifests when she's wearing glasses.
  • Nice Girl: Kaede is sweet and caring, and the closest to a mother Sora has in his life right now.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She’s almost as tall as Daichi at 182cm, which helps her modeling career.

Creatures

    General

  • Cute Critters Act Childlike: The creatures behave very much like small children, apart from Aayan. Most justified for Conny since he actually is a child, just an oni child.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Obviously. The main selling point of the series is to show off their cuteness at every turn.

    Mii-kun

A tiny, adorable mummy sent to Sora by his father. He loves Sora very much and is a bit of a crybaby.

  • Cowardly Lion: As tiny as he is, Mii-kun is often frightened by things around him since he can't defend himself. However, when it comes to making Sora happy, he's willing to do damn near anything.
  • Cuddle Bug: He loves hugging people, especially Sora.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": Mii gets his name from mu-"mmy".
  • Nice Guy: Tries to get Sora to keep him by offering to help with chores. He insists on helping Sora around the house, even though his small size complicates matters.
  • Ocular Gushers: His crying looks like solid streams of water running from his eyes. This is actually a problem since he can cry so much that he gets severely dehydrated.
  • Prone to Tears: Dear lord, does this little guy cry a lot; he'll cry 'cause he's happy, or sad, or scared, or it's Tuesday...
  • She's a Man in Japan: While the "-kun" suffix is more commonly used for boys (not that Sora actually knows Mii-kun’s gender, if he even has one), the French translation uses female pronouns to avoid headaches since the French word "momie" is feminine.

    Pochi

Sora’s dog (female) who has been with him since he was little.

  • Jealous Pet: She’s initially not very fond of Mii-kun, who appeared suddenly and briefly "stole" her master’s attention. They quickly became friends, though.
  • Older Than They Look: Why she looks like your ordinary dog, it’s later revealed that she’s actually 50 years old, and will live much longer.

    Conny

A baby oni who follows Tazuki home one night. He's rambunctious and a bit bratty.

  • Bratty Half-Pint: While he is generally nice, he gets easily irritated by Tazuki's taunting and responds by hitting and kicking him. Of course, he's so little he can't actually hurt Tazuki. He's also very blunt when trying to get Tazuki's attention, and has a tendency to do what he wants without considering how other people will feel about it. He starts to get better after Tazuki officially accepts him into his home.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": He's a "ko-oni" (oni child) named "Conny".
  • Mirror Character: From Tazuki, and he invokes this when they first meet. Both have scars on the same arm, and both from a Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Ocular Gushers: When he cries tears of joy at being accepted by Tazuki.
  • Sweet Tooth: Frequently helps himself to Tsukiyo's desserts, much to the latter’s annoyance.
  • The Ditz: He isn't particularly bright, and will often act before thinking.

    Isao

A little orange dragon who appeared in Motegi's house. He's very clever and is prone to worrying about Motegi's health and happiness.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Fills this role; despite having the mentality of a child like the others, he's easily the most mature, having taught himself to read and write and taking care of his own needs much of the time.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Due to the above, Isao acts an an older brother to Conny and Mii-kun, trying to teach them how to read and such.
  • Nice Guy: As soon as he sees that Motegi is upsetnote  he offers a plushie to calm her down. In general, he is shown to worry about her health and her emotional state.

    Mukumuku

A bakunote  who shows up in Daichi's house to eat his nightmares.

  • Faster Than They Look: He can move at supersonic speeds, despite his round body and extremely stubby legs.
  • Hates Being Touched: He doesn't completely hate being touched, but the other creatures' obsession with touching his fluffy body did annoy him, mostly because they kept piling on top of him.
  • People Puppets: In addition to eating dreams and nightmares, Mukumuku has the ability to control people's bodies while they're asleep. This is how he got into Daichi's house; he literally made Daichi get up and open the door to let him in.

    Mandrake

A mandrake sent by Sora's father. Sora keeps him in the flower bed.

  • Brown Note: Sora notes that, true to mythology, a mandrake's cry will kill anyone who is exposed to it for too long.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: He looks like a tiny radish with legs, but he has a freakishly loud, piercing cry that can incapacitate and eventually kill whoever hears it.
  • Mundane Utility: The only reason Sora keeps it around despite the danger is because his aunt Kaede uses it as an alarm clock.

    Aayan

An Anubis statue tsukumogaminote  that Sora's father sends to him some time after sending Mii-kun, also from Egypt. Unlike the other creatures, Aayan can talk and acts like an adult.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: Aayan, being a tsukumogami, is an animate souvenir statue. However, unlike other examples of this trope, his being a statue means he can only move with his mouth.
  • Large Ham: Is prone to Suddenly Shouting and is sometimes draw at dramatic angles. Some examples being his introduction and him explaining he wants to stay up to watch a foreign drama on TV.
  • Oral Fixation: Because Aayan cannot move the rest of his body on his own, he tends to interact with various objects with his mouth. He claims that it feels nice, and Mii-kun behaves as though he's receiving a massage.
  • Phony Psychic: Aayan is so impressed by Sora showing him Mii-kun that he attempts to impress Sora and Tazuki by trying claim he can see the future. He first looks outside at the rain and claims it will rain that night. Then, he looks at the groceries Sora bought and predicts that they will have curry rice for dinner. He completely gives up the farce when it turns out they're having meat and potatoes instead.

    Pack

An Akuma that vaguely looks like a rabbit. Since Akumas are fragile creatures who curse those around them when they die, other animals tend to avoid them. Pack befriended Daichi in the past but died and accidentally cursed him.

  • Armless Biped: Pack has no arms to speak of, but his very long ears usually make for a decent substitute, adding to its cuteness in a way.
  • Dying Curse: Literally, as Akuma curse whoever is in their vicinity when they die, leaving them with a lifelong handicap, such as Daichi’s chronic nightmares. Though it later turns out that it only applies when they’ve been mistreated of feel betrayed, such as when Pack was shot by Collectors − when they die happy, the "curse" is benevolent, and can even erase a previous curse on the recipient.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Akumas revive shortly after dying with their memories intact. Legend says that if it happens enough times, they turn into angels.

"Collector Hunters"

    Master

An experienced fighter and researcher on Mysterious Creatures, who claims to despise both Collectors and Protectors for unknown reasons. He initially targets Sora, suspecting him of being a Collector.

  • Doom Magnet: Literally − because of his curse, every time he feels joy random objects fly at him and can potentially harm others around him too. It doesn’t help his usually gloomy disposition.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Master" is obviously not his real name, but said real name is always obfuscated in his flashback and he refuses to reveal it to anyone.

    Neri Carrot

A 162-year-old vampire with the appearance of a teenage girl. Master saved her from a cruel fate a few years before the story. She can turn into a white bat-like creature.

    Tora

A young werewolf who was also saved by Master as a baby and sees Neri as his big sister.

  • All Animals Are Dogs: His wolf form is still that of a young pup and he’s exctatic when meeting Pochi, as they can play together as "dogs".
  • Cheerful Child: At first pretty hostile to the protagonists and aggressively protective of Neri, but once their relationship warms up he’s every bit as playful as any little kid.
  • Little Bit Beastly: His human form still shows his canine ears and occasionnally his tail, showing he’s still immature.
