Doge
The main dog himself. Doge is an Image Macro based off Kabosu, an old Shiba Inu. Originally Doge comics were focused on him being frustrated at his ex-wife who would trap him in different formats, before moving on a more all-purpose meme with him in any situation the writers wants. A sub-series of Dogelore comics, "Swole Doge vs Cheems" has him in a muscular form where he represents the superior opinion/idea.
- Black-and-Grey Morality: Doge's conflict with Karen usually involves either this, or Grey-and-Grey Morality. While Karen is usually treated as a Jerkass outside of tormenting Doge she doesn't do anything that villainous. Doge, however, is often written as doing debatably or outright evil things.
- Catchphrase
- "Karen you (insert expletive and/or insult), release me from (insert format)!"
- "I assure you, (insert text where he claims what he's doing makes sense in context)"
- Excrement Statement: He created the "cumcopter", specifically designed to dump his...you know...on Karen. This is done so he can avoid breaking his restraining order.
- Expy: In "Swole Doge vs Cheems" comics the now buff Doge takes a similar role to the Chad from Virgin vs. Chad; he represents the better and more impressive opinion in comparison to Cheems. Occasionally an even more swole Doge will show up to represent an even better opinion, similar to the Thad from Virgin vs. Chad.
- Fetish
- A Running Gag is that Doge has a thing for feet and many of his schemes involve trying to get "feet pics". For example, one comic has him buy a bunch of rulers just because they measure in feet.
- He often expresses interest and excitement in cock and ball torture (or CBT for short), resulting in a "Destroy Dick December" series where he tries to injure his groin in increasingly absurd ways.
- Gender Flip: The dog that the Doge meme is based off is female, however Doge is written as male.
- Loophole Abuse: Karen has a restraining order on him. To get around this he made a helicopter so he can be above her and throw stuff while also being out of range from the order's reach.
Cheems
The second most popular character used in Dogelore comics. He is based off another Shiba Inu called Balltze, and tends to be identified with a speech impediment involving the letter "m". Also known to bonk anyone he sees as horny and send them to "horny jail". He will sometimes have a son called Cheems Jr, unless Cheems is being portrayed as the kid. A sub-series of Dogelore comics, "Swole Doge vs Cheems", has him represent the lesser/negative opinion; usually while crying.
- Batter Up!: Like to hit people with a baseball when they're being horny.
- Berserk Button: Hates anyone being horny regardless of the context, and will bonk them for doing so before sending them to horny jail.
- Butt-Monkey: Some comics will have Cheems as a victim of mockery and/or bullying because of his speech impediment. Whenever he's in any "Swole Doge vs Cheems" he's inevitably going to be seen as the loser of the two.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Between him and Doge, he's the one more likely to be characterized as wacky and uncharacteristic. Often this is down to his speech impediment.
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: In comics where Doge is the wacky one of the two, Cheems will often be depicted as the straight man having to deal with his antics and pointing out he's being odd.
- Depending on the Artist: Usually has a yellow filter applied to him, but occasionally he's depicted without it and looks more like the original picture of Balltze.
- Expy: In "Swole Doge vs Cheems" comics Cheems takes a similar role to the Virgin from Virgin vs. Chad comics where he looks pathetic and/or pitiful, and represents a bad opinion (usually something recent and disappointing).
- Good Parents: Whenever Cheems and Cheems Jr interact (or Cheems is depicted with parents) they're usually on good terms, unlike Doge who's parenting skills can be questionable depending on the comic.
- Satellite Character: Cheems Jr doesn't have the distinct characterization that Doge's kids have, and is usually defined by being a younger version of Cheems rather than his own character.
- Speech Impediment: One of his defining traits is having a speech impediment where he adds m's to stuff. For example, instead of saying cheese he says his own name Cheems, or would say "hemlo" instead of hello. That said, it's not consistent and sometimes he'll speak normally.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Cheems' favorite food is cheeseburgers. Due to his speech impediment, however, he ends up calling them "cheemsburbgers" instead.
Walter
Another recurring character. Unlike most Dogelore characters he's based off a bull terrier instead of a Shiba Inu. He will usually show up to talk about his love for fire and/or monster trucks.
- Catchphrase: "I like firetrucks and monster [sic] trucks. Walter."
- Face of a Thug: In the rare comic where he's written as a good or just a normal guy he comes off across this, since being a front-facing bull terrier makes him look kind of intimidating.
- Non-Standard Character Design: Unlike every other Dogelore character, Walter is based off a front facing picture of a dog.
- Terse Talker: Tends to speak in a rather quick and simple tone.
- Villain Protagonist: While this is still Depending on the Writer, Walter is more often than not written as a bad guy in scenarios compared to Doge and Cheems. Usually this takes the form of him committing or being guilty of war crimes.
Karen
Doge's bitchynote ex-wife. She uses the same format as Doge, except with a bob cut and feminine traits. Originally she got her start imprisoning Doge in different formats, but eventually became more of a distinct character.
- A Lighter Shade of Black
- Played with; whether she or Doge are portrayed as bad depends on the comic, but when they are she's generally this. At her worst she's a super-obnoxious person and possible Knight Templar Parent, but at Doge's worst he performs outright criminal actions.
- In terms of antagonistic characters she's probably the least bad out of them. Coach Henry is a pedophile, Jim is a serious nuisance and occasional murderer and Deborah is a realistically abusive mother. By comparison Karen is just a Jerkass who only truly torments Doge.
- Arch-Enemy: One thing that's consistent about Karen is that Doge hates her and the feeling is mutual. The earlier Dogelore comics had her trap him in different stuff and they continue to have a negative relationship.
- Demoted to Extra: Karen was originally the closest thing the comics had to a villain, as they were about her trapping Doge in stuff. As Doge comics became more generalized, her role became more minor
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: "Evil" is a bit of a stretch as she's more of a Jerkass than anything, but even at her worst she's always shown to love her kids.
- Jerkass: Typically written as being unpleasant and annoying in order to justify why Doge hates her. That said, some of the things she dogs on Doge for are legitimate grievances. She's also pretty bossy.
- Jerkass to One: Comics more kinder to her will treat her as being able to be friendly with other characters, however she's no less of a bitch to Doge than when she's written as an Obnoxious Entitled Housewife.
- Obnoxious Entitled Housewife: Outside of her antipathy with Doge, Karen is typically written as a metaphorical Karen too. For example, being mad at the barista for not getting her coffee perfectly. Usually she yells for the manager when mad.
Doge's family
Doge is typically written as having remarried to Isabelle from Animal Crossing, and having three kids. From Karen there's Big Bro (who looks like a slightly younger Doge with a beanie) and Lil' Bro (who's, well, a little version of Bro) and from Isabelle there's Phoebe, their transgender daughter with a similar haircut to her mother. A minor recurring family member, Aunt Kabosu, is based off the same Shiba Inu as Doge complete with using the pet's name but uses a different picture taken at a later date
- Children Are Innocent: Lil' Bro is usually written as very sweet and kind. The edgier humor is less him doing bad things like his father Doge, and more him suffering from misfortune because of bad things.
- Cool Aunt: Aunt Kabosu is always written as a welcoming and kind presence. Whether she's Doge's or Karen's aunt depends on the comic, but their kids are always excited to go on trips to Japan and meet her.
- Cool Old Lady: Aunt Kabosu is based on an older picture of the shiba inu compared to Doge (and shares a name with the dog Doge is based off), and while how old isn't made clear she's definitely old relative to most of the characters. She's always written as a sweet old Japanese lady
- Eyes Out of Sight: Phoebe's eyes are virtually never seen because hair covers them.
- Good Stepmother: Big and Lil' Bro are treated just as well by Isabelle, if not more son, than by their bio-mother Karen.
- Happily Married: With the rare exception of some edgy or shocking comics, Isabelle and Doge always depicted as a happy and loving couple. It's a big contrast to Doge and Karen's vitriolic hatred both before and after their divorce.
- Harmful to Minors: A common plot in Lil' Bro comics is that he ends up finding something too old for him like Big Bro's porn while being blissfully unaware.
- Jerkass Ball: Lil' Bro is usually written as a sweet kid, but sometimes writers think it's funnier if he acts like a brat such as throwing his McDonalds at Uncle Murphy despite him buying said McDonalds.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Big Bro tends to be introverted and moody due to being a teenager, however he's compassionate towards his family and doesn't go out of his way to be mean.
- Nice Girl: Alongside Uncle Murphy Isabelle is almost always written a kind and compassionate soul, just like she is in canon. Phoebe can be a little bit introverted, but she's just as nice as her mom, and Kabosu is usually written as a Cool Old Lady too. Whether Big and Lil' Bro are nice guys is more Depending on the Writer.
Uncle Murphy
A friendly old shiba inu that serves as one of the more rounded characters. He's known as "Wholesome Uncle Murphy" because of how friendly and mellow he is. He wears a baseball cap and likes to fish. The dog he's based off is was a chunkier shiba inu called Moja.
- Ambiguously Related: It's not clear or consistent how he's related to Doge and his family. He could be an uncle of Doge or Karen, of their kids, or is just a friend that is treated as an uncle. Aunt Kabosu also might be his ex-wife depending on the comic.
- Big Fun: He's fatter than most of the other characters, and of all the character's he's probably the best to be around.
- Cool Old Guy: Maybe not that old, but out of the recurring characters he's one of the oldest alongside Aunt Kabosu. He's arguably the best person in the comics.
- Cool Uncle: What kind of uncle he is isn't clear, but he's always treated as a cool older relative by the other characters.
- Former Bigot: According to one comic involving a pride parade Murphy used to be prejudiced towards his son, who was LGBT. This led to the two being estranged (or the son died; it's not made clear). By the present he's renounced these views and regrets how he was ignorant in the past.
- Gender Flip: Like Doge, the dog Uncle Murphy is based off was female.
- Only Sane Man: Alongside Caesar he tends to be treated as one of the more down to Earth characters and is rarely involved in wacky situations. Whenever something wacky and uncharacteristic happens, Murphy just comes off as confused and clueless to the nonsense.
- Nice Guy: While how nice other characters are varies, Uncle Murphy is almost universally treated as a compassionate and friendly guy. The rare comics that speak negatively of him often have comments saying that Uncle Murphy wouldn't act that way.
Caesar
Caesar is a different breed of dog from Doge that happens to be in the same pose as the iconic Image Macro. While Doge tends to act wacky and uncharacteristic Caesar is the straight man that isn't involved in the absurdity around him...except for the occasional meme where it's funnier for him to break character.
- The Comically Serious: As the straight man almost no humor comes from Caesar himself. Rather, the humor comes from his reactions to the wacky and uncharacteristic people around him.
- Foil: To Doge. Doge gets into a bunch of wacky schemes and has a colorful personality, while Caesar is more laid-back and rooted in reality and reason. In short, if Doge is "wacky and uncharacteristic" Caesar is "normal and characteristic".
- The Generic Guy: Due to not having any quirks Caesar doesn't have much to him outside of being "the normal one". He mainly exists to be a contrast to Doge.
- Happily Married: To contrast Doge and Karen's mutual hatred, whenever Caesar's wife Clara is mentioned their relationship is treated as a loving and stable one.
- Not So Above It All: Occasionally writers will decide it's funnier if he acts in a wacky manner. For example, one comic has him have body pillows "as a man of culture" in reference to Roman statues, and other has him parody Dexter by hunting down Coach Henry.
- Only Sane Man: His defining trait is being the Straight Man to Doge's wackiness and not having any eccentricities. The comedy that comes from him is his reaction to the wackiness around him.
- Satellite Character: Caesar is rarely the main character in Dogelore comics, and is instead a supporting character to more wacky characters like Doge; mainly to serve as commentary/be confused by wackiness.
Coach Henry
One of the more villainous characters, being a Creepy Gym Coach that somehow gets treated as wholesome. While his body is the same as Doge's, his face is part of an elephant seal. Despite his sinister goals regarding the young Dogelore characters he's no less subject to wacky and uncharacteristic plots.
- The Comically Serious: Unlike most of the characters Henry isn't a funny character on his own, and him being a creep is mostly played straight. However he avoids taking away levity because everyone around him is some level of absurd and wacky and they don't take him seriously, allowing comedy to be derived from him.
- Comedic Shotacon: Sort of. On its own Henry's pedophilia isn't all that funny, however the fact that nobody catches on to his creepiness and is inexplicably trusted, not to mention the kids not catching on is treated as funny.
- Creepy Gym Coach: Henry's a pedophile that also happens to be gym coach, and he's not exactly subtle in his "interest" in the students.
- Devil in Plain Sight: Coach Henry is trusted by the community and few notice how evil he is, seeing him as wholesome instead. This is in spite of the fact he acts creepy and is pretty bad at hiding his interests.
- Faux Affably Evil: Tends to talk in a relatively polite and formal way in spite of his intentions, usually in order to gain the trust of future victims. When he has a temper, though, this facade goes right out.
- Gonk: Elephant seals are hardly an attractive animal; having the face of one mixed with a Doge image macro doesn't help him look good at all and only helps compliment his creepy behavior.
- Hate Sink: Played with; out of all the Dogelore characters he's clearly written as despicable, being a child predator without much personal humor. However he's ironically treated as wholesome by the other characters.
- Karma Houdini: Despite his creepiness Coach Henry is rarely caught because people think he's a wholesome character. That said some comics have him found out and usually be in a world of pain because of it.
- Pædo Hunt: Usually shown to have an attraction to the younger Doge characters. The failure to notice his blatant creepiness and everyone thinking he's "wholesome" is played for laughs.
- Sinister Schnoz: Due to being part elephant seal he looks like he has a massive nose, and is definitely one of the most consistently evil characters.
Jim
An ever-grinning Doge that more often than not is causing trouble for people. He likes to suck people's toes, and his criminal actions range from serious crimes like murder to more Poke the Poodle actions like putting his feet on Burger King lettuce.
- Affably Evil: Unlike Coach Henry who only acts affable to pass off as normal, Jim is genuine in his friendliness. He's also completely amoral and causes a bunch of chaos for the lulz.
- Catchphrase: "Go ahead, call the police, you can't un-(whatever he did)"
- Cheshire Cat Grin: Jim is a troublemaker even at the best of times, and he always has a wide-eye grin demonstrating his care-free attitude.
- Cloudcuckoolander: By far the weirdest character in the comics, which is saying something. While most Dogelore characters' wackiness depends on the writer, Jim is almost always written as wacky. The only exception is when it's funnier to subvert expectations by him acting mundane.
- Fetish: He has an...interest in people's toes and likes to suck them. Whether this is a sexual thing or he just does it for the lulz depends on the comic.
- It Amused Me: The majority of his actions are done basically for the hell of it, rather than even the weak/silly reasoning of Doge's mischief. Rarely does he act to get a cruel kick out of it; he just like being ridiculous and messing with people.
- Karma Houdini Warranty: Occasionally when he uses his catchphrase of "go ahead, call the police" his victim does call the police and he gets arrested, much to his chagrin. One comic even has a device to un-suck his victim's toes.
- Laughably Evil: Jim's evil actions are almost always played for laughs by virtue of his absurd personality and treating whatever he does in a light-hearted manner.
- No Love for the Wicked: In one comic featuring a pride parade Jim is part of it and he's called out for being a pervert. Jim then reveals he's actually asexual and his toe-sucking is purely platonic. The characters treat this as worse than if it was done for a sexual reason. Another comic subverts this by revealing his toe sucking isn't sexually motivated, but beating skulls in with a hammer is.
- Perpetual Smiler: Jim almost always has a grin, which makes it easier to tell him and Doge apart.
- Poke the Poodle: While some of his actions are more serious, a lot of what he does counts as more of a nuisance than anything. His most well-known crime is sucking people's toes.
Deborah
A really fat and mean-tempered that has continued to live like she was 21 for over 20 years. Also known as "Fat Mom", she has a son called Rupert who she's mean to. Compared to the other amoral actions of the other characters her emotional abuse is usually played straight.
- Abusive Parents: She belittles her son, blames him for her problems and ignores his needs if they're inconvenient. Unlike Doge's more amoral actions around his kids, there isn't any levity in her abuse.
- Fat Bitch: Both a literal and metaphorical example. She's the fattest character of the cast and is an unpleasant mother along with being overall thoughtless.
- Hate Sink: Probably the most unlikable Dogelore character, except for one comic where she has a Heel Realization. She's an emotionally abusive mother who blames him for her obesity and her cruelty to Rupert is realistically abusive. Coach Henry might be a worse person but he's at least treated as ironically likable, while Deborah is just a Jerkass with none of Karen's sympathetic qualities of Jerkass Has a Point moments.
- Heel Realization: In one comic series she forces her kid to come with her despite feeling not good, only for Rupert to throw up and fall unconscious, scaring her. He turns out fine after going to the doctor's, but the experience leads her to re-evaluate her life and act nicer to her son while also trying to lose weight
- Jerkass: If the aforementioned tropes aren't enough of an indication. She's even more of a dick than Karen, who at least keeps most of her bitchiness to Doge (or the occasional suffering employee).
- Never My Fault: She blames Rupert for causing her to gain weight, only to immediately buy a bunch of unhealthy junk food.
