Turncoat Soul Reapers
Squad 5's traitorous captain, known to most as Josh Groban.
- Celebrity Impersonator: He keeps up a charade of being Josh Groban. He does it so well that a good number of characters actually believed he was, even though they knew it was impossible for a human singer to be a Soul Reaper. At this point, most of his Arrancar underlings don't know he's not Josh Groban.
- Even Evil Has Standards: According to Mayuri in The Diamond Dust Rebellion abridged movie, Soul Society has a truce with him on Christmas.
- Evil Is Petty: His uses of Kyoka Suigetsu range from the intended use of casting illusions on his enemies, to making Tōsen's and Aaroniero's speech incomprehensible for laughs and forcing everyone who's seen his Shikai's release to say "Josh Groban" instead of "Aizen". He also frequently makes really backhanded comments intended to aggravate the Espada, especially Barragan and Grimmjow.
- Expy: When he's first introduced, and especially when he reveals his true colors, he essentially behaves like Carl from Llamas with Hats.
- Faux Affably Evil: He's unfailingly polite, even when he's chopping up people who he worked with and admired him.
- Identical Stranger: While pretending to be a loyal member of Soul Society, he looked just enough like Josh Groban to pretend he was. It spawned the longest running gag in the series.
- It Amused Me: The only reason he does literally anything. Hence why he hasn't dropped the "Josh Groban" from his name.
- Leitmotif: In scenes in which he is the primary focus, the Background Music is usually a song sung by the actual human Josh Groban.
- Most Definitely Not a Villain: He lays it on real thick prior to his betrayal, to the point where even the other characters are doing it.Renji: Josh "the joke is that you're not Aizen" Groban, can I talk to you?
Aizen: Yes, I'm not evil what do you need? - Not Me This Time: Despite being directly responsible for both Tōsen's and Aaroniero's status as The Unintelligible, he had nothing to do with Komamura's tendency to communicate exclusively by barking, and was as surprised as everyone else to learn that he could actually talk.
- Orcus on His Throne: If he were to get off his chair and involve himself in his plans, his opposition, bar Yamamoto, would be wiped out in minutes. Aizen is probably giving his enemies time to prepare so he won't be disappointed during the inevitable clash.
- Rule of Funny: Kyoka Suigetsu works differently when it comes to replacing "Aizen" with "Josh Groban". Instead of everyone affected by it being forced to hear "Josh Groban" instead of "Aizen", any attempts by them to say Aizen's real name will be heard as Josh Groban by everyone.
- Running Gag: Josh Groban is called Josh Groban by everyone who has seen his shikai. Everyone else, like Ichigo, knows him as Aizen.
- Smug Super: Under his polite facade is the most powerful member of the cast so far, and the egomanical attitude to match.
- Troll: The sheer amount of dickishness for the sake of his own amusement is even more astounding than canon. And because nobody can touch him, he can get away with all of it.
Aizen's creepy friend.
- Card-Carrying Villain: He knows he's pretty evil by this point, so why not have fun with it?
- Perpetual Smiler: He'll only stop when caught off-guard, and it won't last long anyway.
- Troll: Nowhere near "Josh Groban" levels, but Gin does have his fun with his allies and enemies alike.
- Verbal Tic: His "Mmm~" at the end of his sentences, which he claims is how he vocalizes periods.
- Just Between You and Me: Does this to Kenpachi when they're in his Bankai... meaning that Kenpachi is deaf.
- The Unintelligible: Not by choice. Aizen is forcing everyone's senses to hear him mumbling incomprehensibly for shits and giggles. Tōsen can only be understood when he says "Justice", when he's in his Bankai (a space where senses are inert), or by people who haven't been affected by Kyoka Suigetsu.
Espada
Coyote Starrk
The generally nice Primera Espada.
- Nice Guy: As in canon. His first lines are telling the Espada to stop fighting because they're all friends, and he tells Lilynette not to call the Privarons "vermin" even when Aizen states she's not wrong. Ulquiorra even lists Starrk as one of two people in Hueco Mundo who isn't, to his knowledge, a dick.
Lilynette Gingerbuck
Starrk's young girl companion.
- Incoming Ham: Her Establishing Character Moment has her shouting at the top of her lungs.
The former God-King of Hueco Mundo, who's still grumpy about the 'former' part.
- Demoted to Dragon: He had declared himself God-King of Hueco Mundo before Aizen rolled in, made a fool of him, and took his position. He's still bitter about it.
- Grumpy Old Man: Hard not to be when your "boss" destroyed your army and took your comfortable throne for himself. He's noticeably very bitter in the present about it all, which is not helped by how much Aizen enjoys rubbing it in his face.
The reliable Tres Espada.
- Nice Girl: Not as much as Starrk, but Ulquiorra notes she's "pretty alright" when it comes to nice people in Hueco Mundo.
- The Reliable One: Aizen refers to her as this amongst the Espada, as she's the only one who figures out quickly that Ichigo coming to Hueco Mundo for Orihime was All According to Plan. Ulquiorra also speaks of her with respect as an influential Arrancar with devoted followers and masterful control of water.
- The Smurfette Principle: Nnoitra claims she's only on the team because of this.
The emotionless Cuatro Espada.
- Card-Carrying Villain: Downplayed. He's not evil, but...Ulquiorra: I too, am probably a dick.
- The Comically Serious: He's completely unflappable, even in the face of Aizen's more absurd orders.
- Even Evil Has Standards: He's disgusted by Nnoitra's misogynistic attitude.
- Extreme Doormat: Any time someone gives Ulquiorra an order, be it Aizen's legendary trolling or even his enemies telling him to stay out of a fight, he complies without hesitation because he thinks there must be a good reason for it.
- Literal-Minded: He'll take anything he hears at face value, and expresses confusion when the people around him are in turn confused by his behavior.
- Straw Nihilist: He's as void of emotion as one would expect, and one thing that keeps him going is the urge to mock people who have feelings.
The crude Quinto Espada.
- He-Man Woman Hater: Much like in canon, he's very misogynistic and thinks that Harribel is only in the Espada to be the token girl, instead of her being an extremely powerful former Vasto Lorde and one of the few sane Arrancar in Las Noches.
- Jerkass: Insults his fellow Espada (particularly the female ones) and even laughs at his own boss.
- Kill Steal: Aizen explicitly tells him not to do this to the other Espada and let them have their fun.
- No Indoor Voice: Lampshaded when Ulquiorra asks why he's yelling when they're literally face-to-face.
The wild and destructive Sexta Espada, except for the time when he had his arm blown off.
- An Arm and a Leg: Tousen destroys his arm as a punishment for going to the Living World without orders. Orihime later heals it.
- Angrish: His explanations occasionally devolve into him grunting loudly while imagining himself beating his enemies. Strangely enough, he often becomes quite articulate when he's actually speaking to the enemy in person (usually Ichigo).
- Blood Knight: The only thing he likes is fights he can win with a bit of effort. Fights he wins too easily or that he can't win just piss him off.
- Skull Cups: When Ichigo offers him a chance to talk things out, Grimmjow just replies he's gonna use Ichigo's skull as his beer mug.
The extremely effeminate and short-lived replacement Sexta for Grimmjow.
- Ambiguous Gender: He has an extremely effeminate voice and likes switching between male and female self-description ('face me man to man', 'It's rude to approach a lady without permission', and so on). It seriously unsettles his opponents.
- Asshole Victim: Is incredibly smug and dismissive of Grimmjow, referring to him at one point as a "neutered panther", but then again Grimmjow isn't exactly a nice guy.
- Combat Tentacles: Ikkaku is incredibly uncomfortable about them due to the gender ambiguity.
- Jerkass: Not afraid to demean and insult ally and enemy alike.
- Half the Man He Used to Be: Gets his upper half blown away by Grimmjow like in canon. Unlike in canon, Grimmjow makes Orihime heal him so he can do it again, and again, and again.
- Oh, Crap!: Starts panicking after Aizen tells Orihime to heal Grimmjow's arm, clearly understanding that the guy's going to immediately come for his position back.
Aizen's scientist and the 8th Espada, who somewhat overestimates his potential nemesis.
- Adaptational Heroism: Unlike canon, where he honestly couldn't care less that Renji killed his brother Yylfordt and in fact implanted him with spycam insects, here Szayel legitimately wants revenge for his brother's death.
- Crazy-Prepared: He's been observing the movements of Ichigo's crew since they arrived in Las Noches, allowing him to quote "Batman" Renji and Uryu.
- What's Up, King Dude?: Always addresses Aizen as "bro", though in-between "Lord" and "sir".
The mysterious Nueve Espada.
- Didn't See That Coming: He was all set to torment Rukia with Kaien's face and memories, only for Rukia to forget Kaien entirely and assume he's Ichigo or Hisagi.
- The Unintelligible: He communicates via bubble noises unless he's using the face of someone he's eaten. He admits it never happened until he joined Aizen, upon which it becomes obvious that he's another victim of Aizen's legendary trolling.
The brutish Diez Espada.
- Awesome Aussie: He has this accent, and he definitely fits the "brawn over brain" stereotype.
- The Brute: Plenty of raw power, but no brains to back it up.
- Malaproper: Tends to use similar sounding words than the ones he actually means, like conservationists instead of conversationalists.
- Odd Friendship: He considers Wonderweiss to be his best friend. It helps that they're both brainless powerhouses.
Privaron Espada
A handsome and flamboyant Privaron Espada.
- Adaptational Wimp: Zigzagged. He's not any less dangerous than in canon, but Ichigo opts to go full power and defeat him in moments rather than drag out the fight to conserve his strength.
- Latin Lover: He's the only person in Hueco Mundo to be Spanish, and he makes sure to tell Ichigo that he's an excellent lover.
An overworked Privaron Espada.
- Adaptational Personality Change: From "sadistic dominatrix" to "exhausted college student".
- Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: She and Pesche used to date. She's not proud of it.
- Foe Romance Subtext: She and Ishida start arguing Like an Old Married Couple moments after the begin fighting.
A Privaron Espada whose name Ichigo can't remember nor pronounce, and so calls him Jimmy Lightning Fist while telling the tale of Chad's fight with him to his kids.
- Adaptation Name Change: Zig-Zagged, if not subverted. Episode 28 credits his actual name from the original series, so it's implied that his real name remains Gatenbainne; he's 'Jimmy Lightning Fist' to the audience because Ichigo's telling the story and can't be bothered to correctly remember his name.Giko: So is he called Lightning Fist or are you just making this up?
Ichigo: Yes.
Giko: ....Yes what?
Ichigo: Yup. - Aerith and Bob:Giko: So... the Privaron Espada were named Dordoni, Cirucci, and Jimmy Lightning Fist? That kinda strikes me as inconsistent, dad.
- Afro Asskicker: This version is a parody of Blaxploitation action heroes with a Jive Turkey accent to go with it.
- Meaningful Name: Because he has electrified stingers grafted to his wrists. He also (According to Ichigo's story...) used to be called "Jimmy Lightning Fist and-also-feet-because-he's-fast". Which didn't stick.
- The Straight Man: Despite his Afro Asskicker schtick, he's this between him and Chad. Who's on a power-trip and convinced that he's the vessel of his culture's Gods.
Other
Two incomplete Arrencar stationed at an observation post far away from Las Noches. Bear a resemblance to a certain pair of brothers from a certain video game.
- Expy: Of Papyrus and Sans, respectively.
- Pungeon Master: Demoura loves using people's names in puns, much to Aisslinger's annoyance.
- Those Two Guys: Their only scenes are with each other, and overall they're extremely minor members of Aizen's organization who can be taken out by Chad and Ishida, with Ichigo just looking on from the sidelines.
- Creepy Child: Constantly mentions the topic of eating people. She is a Hollow, after all.
- Cute, but Cacophonic: Ichigo's foremost complaint about her is how she tends to yell to make her point.
