Captains

    Captain-Commander Ganryusai Yamamoto
"I think you should draw your swords you should, before I burn you to a crispy toasty crispy toast!"

Voiced by: Logan Laidlaw

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed. He's still a Lawful Stupid Trigger-Happy jerk at times, but it's more due to being a Scatterbrained Senior, and he can be nicer and more cordial, even willing to offer a pardon to Kusaka upon first confronting him. This is attributed to Ichigo's influence bringing out the best in him.
  • Alter Kocker: He has a comically Yiddish accent and slips in the occasional word, plus he's old as sin.
  • Awesomeness Is a Force: He overwhelms Nanao's brain with the sheer force of how completely ripped he is.
  • Lawful Stupid: He operates on a strict adherence to the rules set down by Central 46, even though they're both outdated at best and fascist at worst. Ichigo's influence is helping him overcome it, but it's a work in progress.
  • Old Master: Make no mistake, this man is simultaneously quite old, and the strongest that Soul Society has to offer. Too bad he happens off his rocker as well.
  • Playing with Fire: His Zanpakutō's ability, which he will quickly remind anyone who mouths off to him.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Oh my, yes. Soul Society's highest authority is a senile old man who can't remember what he said five seconds ago and is quick to resort to setting people on fire if he's in a bad mood.
  • Trigger-Happy: Yamamoto loves his executions, and his first response to something he doesn't like is to execute the person responsible.
  • Yiddish as a Second Language: "Oy vey!"

    Shunsui Kyōraku
Voiced by: Logan Laidlaw

  • The Alcoholic: He needs some kind of toxicity in his system to function, to the point where Unohana resorts to a bourbon I.V. when treating him.
  • Drunken Master: One of Soul Society's strongest captains, and a perpetual drunkard, equals this. He even tells Sojiro that the others would call shenanigans on his plan to make it looked like Hitsugaya injured him because that would require Hitsugaya to be able to take down Kyoraku in the first place.

    Suì-Fēng
Voiced by: Mimi Mimoa

The Yoruichi-sexual captain of Squad 2.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed a bit. Suì-Fēng can still be pretty abrasive but she's comparatively more approachable than her original counterpart.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: She attacks Kiyone because to her, there's no grey zone between being a traitor and being loyal; even serving under a traitorous captain is enough for Suì-Fēng.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Her falling out with Yoruichi left her like this. They made out— er, made up.
    Suì-Fēng: Same thing!
  • Inverse Law of Utility and Lethality: As Yoruichi mockingly notes, she sucks at actually hitting the targets she makes with Suzumebachi. And bets that it won't work on anyone important.
  • Ninja: Something she takes great pride in.
  • Police Are Useless: The Stealth Force she leads has never been the best at tracking actual criminals, if Kusaka's opinion of them is any indication.
  • Useless Useful Spell: Her insta-kill technique has only worked once, on a filler villain. The next filler villain she used it on was able to shrug it off, and she's never going to be able to kill any major canon villains with it.
  • You Need to Get Laid: Ichigo's opinion of her. He may not be wrong, given that she's more agreeable when Yoruichi is around.

    Retsu Unohana
Voiced by: Lindsay Navarro

The motherly captain of the 4th Division, also known as the cuddle squad.

  • The Medic: Leads the division responsible for medical work.
  • Retired Badass: Team Mom she may be, but Aizen avoiding a fight with her, and Yamamoto actually listening to her, serve as a stark reminder that Unohana is dangerous.
  • Team Mom: One of the few reasonable people in Soul Society, her motherly persona can defuse conflict by showing enough disapproval.

    Byakuya Kuchiki
"My soul is so very heavy. When you ran away it deepened the bottomless pit that is my heart. How can you do that, Rukia? Why did you deepened my heart pit?"

Voiced by: Logan Laidlaw

Rukia's older brother, and an Emo Teen despite being over a century old.

  • Calling Your Attacks: To drive home how much of an Emo he is, he recites his Kidō with nihilistic names instead their actual ones. He even adds a "negative" before the number.
“Hado -63: "The pain I feel within my soul every waking moment" blast.”
  • Cold Ham: Even when he raises his voice and starts getting dramatic, he always maintains his deadpan monotone.
  • The Comically Serious: He maintains a heavy deadpan at all times, leading to hilarious contrasts with more colorful characters like Ichigo and Renji.
  • Emo Teen: Though he's an adult man, he sure likes the nihilistic attitude and depressing poetry associated with emo culture. He implies that Hisana's death is the reason for it.
  • Emotional Powers: His Spiritual Pressure and Kido are both powered by his overwhelmingly grim outlook on life.
    Ichigo: What is this…!?
Byakuya: What you are feeling is the unyielding weight of real life responsibilities.
    […]
Byakuya: I infected Zabimaru with the pain I feel everyday within my heart pit. It was unable to stand under the pressure.
    Renji: That’s heavy man…
  • Lawful Stupid: Even he has the opinion that letting Rukia be executed was this, and he admits that he didn't expect her to forgive him for it and claiming he wouldn't.
  • Leitmotif: A rock cover of "Hopes and Dreams" from the Undertale soundtrack.
  • The Lost Lenore: He implies that his wife and Rukia's sister Hisana's death is the reason why he's so depressed in the present.
  • Not So Above It All: Not afraid to get in on the humor himself, such as when Yoruichi attacks Ichigo and Ukitake thinks she's on their side...
    "Sweet. She's hot."
  • Oh, Crap!: As in canon, he has one when Ichigo's Hollow takes over and starts trying to kick his ass. After Ichigo suppresses him, Byakuya even outright states they're ending this with their next attack because "that was terrifying."
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Whenever he uses Senbonzakura, he often espouses that pink isn't a sissy color.
Byakuya: I know what you're thinking; "Oh they're pink, they can't be dangerous. Pink is a stupid color". Well two things; you're a stupid color and pink just fucked you up.
  • Straw Nihilist: Goes around spouting poetry about how nothing matters and everything is pointless. After Rukia's execution is prevented, he promises to at least try to be happier, staring by saying "puppies are not depressing."
  • Trash Talk: Moreso than his canon counterpart. His grim outlook on life doesn't stop him from mocking his opponents.

    Sajin Komamura
Voiced by: Aaron Robert Parnell

The anthropomorphic wolf captain of the 9th division, who only speaks in barks... around Kenpachi, at least.

  • Accent Adaptation: He has a Japanese accent... unlike everyone else around him.
  • The Unintelligible: Unlike Tōsen, an aversion. Komamura is capable of talking, but for some reason kept barking during his fight with Kenpachi.
  • Wolf Man: If the barking didn't give it away.

    Tōshirō Hitsugaya
"Like all problems this all stems from old men who have no idea what they're doing. Soul Society should be run by the youth, man!"

Voiced by: Logan Laidlaw

The young and rebellious captain of Squad 10, who fights to change society with his ice dragon.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: Toshiro in the original is a no-nonsense workaholic Straight Man. This one is more energetic and quirky, though surprisingly still sane.
  • Cool People Rebel Against Authority: Firmly against "The Man", and anyone who perpetuates Soul Society's stagnant laws. He thinks Kisuke's cool because of this.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His reason for being so anti-authority? He and his best friend were forced to fight to the death because Central 46 didn't like the fact that they had the same Zanpakutō, on Christmas and his birthday. Tōshirō became the angry, society-hating millennial he is today because of that.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The Diamond Dust Rebellion was this for him, giving him more character than the average captain.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He's not actually wrong about Soul Society needing change, citing the fact that they rule through force, and have a ruthless madman and a Mad Scientist for captains.
  • Hot-Blooded: Ironic for An Ice Person. He's very passionate about society.
  • An Ice Person: His Zanpakutō lets him summon giant ice dragons that yell "DRAGON!" every time he does.
  • Internal Reformist: He became a Captain specifically so he could change Soul Society for the better.
  • The Man Is Sticking It to the Man: Subverted. Though becoming a captain while preaching his ideology might make him look this way, he actually plans to change Soul Society one step at a time.
  • Rebellious Spirit: He's a radical who opposes and complains against those who corrupt society in general. He's ultimately working for the betterment of Soul Society, but he's easily tempted to look at sacred objects that are illegal to be looked at to spite the higher ups.
  • Relative Button: Immediately tries to kill Hisagi for saying Momo is the worst critical thinker in Soul Society i.e. being one of the lieutenants who were fooled by their treacherous captains.
  • Significant Birth Date: Christmas Day, the day his friend Kusaka died and he became a rebel. As opposed to canon where his birthday was December the 20th.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Yamamoto is this to him, because he represents the "broken and outdated system".

    Kenpachi Zaraki
"Some say my mother was a train, some say I'm a rejected Godzilla monster too strong for the series canon, but everyone says I'M THE KENPACHI!!"

Voiced by: Logan Laidlaw

The bloodthirsty captain of the 11th division.

  • Blood Knight: He claims to have "senien-nitis", a disease that will kill him if he doesn't fight long enough.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Kenpachi is aware that his allies don't like him, which he attributes to him not killing enough and not properly rather than being... y'know... Kenpachi. He also thinks that racking up his kill count will eventually make Soul Society like him.
  • The Dreaded: Ichigo is still haunted by their fight, and most mooks Kenpachi faces usually end up running from him.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Soul Society despises Kenpachi so much that they've been trying to kill him for ages. However, no one except Ichigo has been able to beat him, hence why he's still around.
  • Left the Background Music On: He often sings or hums whatever theme is playing while he's fighting, and occasionally Yachiru starts the music up for him.
  • No Sense of Direction: It takes him a while to find the Ryoka because he keeps going in exactly the wrong direction.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: He's very much aware that the other captains don't like him. The problem is he thinks it's because he doesn't "properly kill" his enemies and resolves to kill more people to earn respect, when it's more for his destructive tendencies, bloodlust, and blatant disregard for authority.

    Mayuri Kurotsuchi
Voiced by: Logan Laidlaw

The rapping mad scientist captain of Squad 12.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Extremely downplayed. If Mayuri's first interaction with Ishida is an indication to his general thought process, he doesn't intentionally act as insane as he does, rather his brain just refuses to let him say anything other than insanity. He's still a Mad Scientist responsible for heinous crimes and the death of Souken Ishida, but it's a far cry from his canon portrayal who was unrepentantly vile through and through.
Mayuri: I'm Mayuri Kurotsuchi. I'd love to dissect you! (thinking) 'Goddamnit, brain! Say nice things!'
    Mayuri's Brain: NEVEEERRR!
Mayuri: Let's start again. I'd love to remove your organs. (thinking) 'BRAIIIN!'
  • Mad Scientist: He usually greets people by talking about how he wants to dissect them, recognizes that this isn't proper manners, and does it again.
  • Mr. Exposition: As the leader of the scientific division, he tends to explain what's going on with Filler abilities or actions.
  • Obviously Evil: His brain won't even let him say non-threatening things.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Though Soul Society has it's fair share of amoral people, Mayuri is the only one that isn't there to uphold laws or kill enemies. He just wants to experiment on everything and everyone around him.

    Jūshirō Ukitake
Voiced by: Aaron Robert Parnell

The sweet but chronically ill captain of the 13th division.

  • Incurable Cough of Death: He's "dying forever", as he puts it, and his sentences are often interrupted by coughing. It may be related to the thing in his body that even Mayuri would be horrified to see...
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The sanest of Soul Society's higher-ups, and he's usually too busy coughing his lungs out to function as such.

Lieutenants

    Rangiku Matsumoto
Voiced by: Aaron Robert Parnell

Hitsugaya's lieutenant, a beautiful woman who happens to have a very masculine voice.

  • Hypocritical Humor: Agrees with Ikkaku that a woman who sounds like a man is weird.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Her main joke is that she has a deep male voice, and unlike Yoruichi, it's her actual voice.

    Ikkaku Madarame
Voiced by: Logan Laidlaw

The third seat of the Eleventh Division.

  • Blood Knight: As Yumichika puts it, his brain is built for hitting things.
  • Catchphrase: "I learned X at the academy!"
  • Willfully Weak: He can use Bankai, but usually refuses to because he doesn't want to be promoted.

    Yumichika Ayasegawa
Voiced by: Aaron Robert Parnell

  • Catchphrase: He usually throws the word "aesthetic" into his sentences, and is obviously enamored with the concept.

    Momo Hinamori
Voiced by: Ariel Hansen

Aizen's fangirl of a lieutenant.

  • Demoted to Extra: Downplayed. She doesn't have that big a role in the canon Soul Society arc, but she does have a subplot involving how Aizen manipulates her into thinking Toshiro killed him and wanted to destroy the Soul Society, as well as an established friendship with Izuru and Renji. Here, she's quickly knocked aside by Toshiro when he goes after Gin, and her other scenes largely amount to Josh Groban screwing with her.
  • Fangirl: Of Josh Groban, which Aizen exploits ruthlessly. Even after he reveals his true colors, Momo still believes that Aizen really is Josh Groban, and that he's being framed.

    Nemu Kurotsuchi
Voiced by: Cassandra Cavalli

  • Robo Speak: Nemu always speaks in a monotone voice, reflecting the fact that she is a custom artificial soul built by Mayuri. Can also lay down a beat for when he wishes to have a rap battle.
