In 1989
"I said, use my first name, Darling."

Voiced By: Michaela Laws, Lizzy Hofe (in "A Childhood Lesson.")

The mother of our, um, "hero". Although not appearing during Yan-chan's exploits, as she and her husband are out of town for those ten weeks, a great deal of the lore involves her. Specifically, she kidnapped a senpai of her very own, gave him Stockholm Syndrome, married him and had a child, who is none other than Yan-chan. Also, she may or may not have influenced Yan-chan's behavior.

1980s mode focuses on her misdeeds.

  • Abduction Is Love: The Basement Tape reveals a number of important details – namely that she kidnapped her senpai and kept him locked up until Stockholm Syndrome kicked in, and that her mother had done the same thing to her husband.
  • Abusive Parents: Yes and no. She genuinely loves Ayano, and to our knowledge, has never been violent, neglectful, or even cruel to her. However, she's also actively trying to mold Ayano into her image and spent the latter's childhood slowly manipulating her into the murderous yandere we get to know in the game. It's doubtful Ayano ever had a chance at a normal life, but if there ever was one, Ryoba knowingly robbed her of it.
  • All for Nothing: Discussed in the epilogue to 1980s Mode, where she narrates that, no matter how she eliminated her rivals, being put on trial for murdering Sumire meant that she could never approach Senpai the way she wanted, so she just kidnapped him. She eventually comes to the conclusion that it wasn't for nothing, because now she could teach her daughter how best to win her own love.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: The "1980s Mode" is her quest for her Senpai, so she is naturally the protagonist.
  • Arch-Enemy: She's the main enemy of the journalist. She's also this to Headmaster Kocho, in his own mind.
  • Ax-Crazy: Must've been this to some extent to kill several people for love.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Got away with everything she did by manipulating the public's opinion of herself and the Journalist. However, the outcome of her confrontation with the journalist in America during her ten-week-long trip remains to be seen.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: In the past, she put up the façade of an innocent schoolgirl, when she was really just an obsessive murderer. She also seems like a friendly, loving, energetic woman in the present. Key word being seems. Word of God says that Ryoba's neighbors know her and find her friendly, but she doesn't talk much about herself, instead turning discussion to be about her husband, daughter, or someone else.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: She had known about Jokichi for over a year, but had been too afraid to confess her love to him because she feared that she would mess everything up, so she resorted to stalking him until she had enough courage to do anything. The eleven rivals ultimately serve to build up her bravery to finally confess to her senpai.
  • Character Development: She starts off 1980s mode as too afraid to confess her feelings to her senpai. However, according to her narration, she became stronger and bolder after successfully eliminating each of her rivals. She even gains enough courage to try to confess her feelings for him, though her attempt was interrupted by the Journalist and several policemen.
  • Child by Rape: Implied, given that the yandere trait goes back several generations and she admits in the basement tapes that her mother abducted her father in the same way Ryoba abducted her senpai. Not to mention that the timeline shown in the S+ ending of 1980s Mode shows that Ryoba was born only a year after her father was abducted...
  • Consummate Liar: She managed to fool a court and the entire nation that she was framed for the murders she committed.
  • The Corrupter: She's slowly manipulating Ayano into becoming a yandere killer like herself, but Ayano can avoid becoming a murderer if she opts to go matchmaker, have her rivals expelled, make her Senpai hate them, etc. How Ryoba would react to it is currently unknown, though it's possible she wouldn't mind as long as Ayano achieves her goals given that she canonically got rid of five of her rivals with non-lethal methods.
  • Creepy Child: She was able to fool numerous people and sabotaged her crush's love life. She retains the creepiness and childishness into her adult years.
  • Cute and Psycho: Outwardly? A beautiful middle-aged lady who loves her family. Inwardly? Well, she does actually love her family, but she's also a murderous psychopath who kidnapped her future husband and kept him in her basement until he developed Stockholm Syndrome.
  • Dark Action Girl: Implied. She canonically stabbed Sumire/The Phantom Girl to death, and you have all the power to just directly kill all of the other rivals, though the "preferred" ways of eliminating them involve less direct approaches. Outside of the rivals, Ryoba has the drive to beat up an entire gang of thugs to help out Togo in order to get Yakuza's help, and the S+ ending has her get involved with the Saikou Corporation for kidnapping her senpai from her, with presumably bloody results.
  • Death by Irony: She seems to have had a thing for ironic eliminations, going by the 'S+' route in 1980s mode. The kind Kaguya has her events sabotaged so she looks like a jerk, the pyromaniac Moeko is killed by fire, the bookish Honami is killed by a falling bookshelf, the aspiring athlete Sumiko is poisoned by one of her own healthy meals, the singer Ai is electrocuted by her microphone while singing a song that uses electricity metaphors, model student Teiko is expelled, the popular Komako has her reputation ruined and is horribly bullied until she decides to drop out of the school, and Sonoko, who entered the school specifically to prove Ryoba's guilt, is befriended and sides with her instead of the Journalist during her trial.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She killed at least one of her classmates (Canonically six) for love, just like her daughter (has the option to). That's... a tad harsh.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Throughout the Basement Tapes, her voice is cheerful and giggly as she is talking to her kidnapped Senpai, and later when she plans to track down the Journalist. It's even emphasized by the above picture. Think she looks like a normal, happy middle-aged woman? Well, note the knife she's holding behind her back.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her ecstatic sigh after she forces her senpai to use her first name sounds rather orgasmic.
  • Doting Parent: She absolutely adores her daughter Ayano and can't wait for her to get a boyfriend of her own. Word of God states that Ryoba sees Ayano as, essentially, the personification of her and her husband's "love".
  • Emotionless Girl: Downplayed when compared to Ayano, but Ryoba has very little in the way of emotion: She gets annoyed with other girls for showing an interest in Jokichi, and is very nervous when it comes to confessing her feelings. Like Ayano, she's very straightforward in her speech and factual in the courtroom when she stands trial for Sumire's murder. Word of God also explains that Ryoba felt pity for her father, who was broken into an Empty Shell, and resolved to never go that far.
  • Empty Eyes: The Journalist describes her peepers as soulless and doll-like.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The tutorial for 1980s mode (which is when she first appears in that mode) has her grab a knife from the Cooking Club and using it to kill Sumire/Phantom Girl, which displays her ruthlessness.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite how ruthless she is, she loves her husband and adores her daughter. Ayano is indifferent towards her, and her husband was forced to love her as an effect of Stockholm Syndrome.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Word of God states that Ryoba's father was completely broken by her mother, to the point of being an Empty Shell devoted only to her. Ryoba actually felt pity for him growing up, and made it a point to not break Jokichi completely. Say what you will about Ryoba, at least even she has her limits.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When her senpai tries to reason with her to let him free, she is confused on why kidnapping and tying someone to a chair, let alone murdering people for love, is morally questionable.
  • Evil Matriarch: The Aishi clan is definitely a matriarchy, because its women kidnap, blackmail, and manipulate in order to literally "catch" a husband, whom they then terrify into submission.
  • Evil Virtues: She has the same "Devoted" persona as her daughter. She equally illustrates in the 1980's mode why that can be a problem.
  • Foil: Ryouba's personality is pretty much YandereDev's response to people accusing Ayano of not being a yandere. Both of them will do anything, up and including murder, to get rid of anyone who gets between them and their loved one, but while Ayano is an Empty Shell who only started to feel anything after encountering Senpai, Ryouba already has emotions and distinct personality who hides her psychopathic side under a sweet and gentle façade, like a traditional yandere would.
  • Generation Xerox: Not only is she a yandere like her daughter, her picture shows she looks exactly like Ayano, except older (duh) and, thanks to age and having a child, significantly more voluptuous. That they share a voice actress only further drives the point home.
  • Genki Girl: An evil and rather creepy example, going by her interaction with her finally captured senpai in the pre-recorded tapes.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: She is the reason the police are leery about investigating the school, after she humiliated the Buraza Town police department by convincing the whole world that she had been falsely accused due to bureaucratic incompetence in an internationally high-profile case. Also, Ryoba's psychosis being hereditary is seemingly the source of Ayano's evil.
  • Giggling Villain: In Basement Tape #1, she giggles a lot out of girlish glee at finally being able to talk to her senpai. Basement Tape #10, recorded decades later (mere days before the game's main campaign starts), shows she hasn't changed a bit.
  • Happily Married: Played with. While she is pretty happy she got together with her senpai, said senpai is clearly not happy.
  • Hidden Badass: She doesn't really look like a cold-blooded murderer, now does she?
  • Hypocrite: For a woman who called the Journalist a lecherous pervert, Ryoba herself seems to have very little problem with being a Yandere Stalker with a Crush.
  • Implied Death Threat: Directed towards the Journalist in the past after being found innocent in court.
Ryoba: It would be very easy to make your death look like a suicide. Don't ever cross me again.
  • It Runs in the Family: The first basement cassette suggests that her mother was also a yandere. Word of God says that the yandere trait goes back several generations. 1980s mode reveals that this shtick has been going on since 1780!
  • Karma Houdini: She was able to live happily with the man of her dreams and raise a daughter. The Journalist lampshades this, saying that “he can’t live in a world where a monster like her walks in public”.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter:
    • Her and her daughter are both Yandere girls who are likely to kill for their respective senpai and go to the same high school. She even goes through the same list of potential eliminations Ayano does, including the more peaceful ones. Though, Ayano can optionally follow in her footsteps the exact way, or Defy her heritage entirely.
    • Ryoba suggests in one tape that both her and her mother kidnapped their senpais, kept them captive, and tied them to the same chair in a basement.
  • Love Before First Sight: She has had the same fever dream for her entire life where she meets her soulmate and get together with him. When she finally meets Jokichi Yudasei for the first time, she recognizes him from her dreams, making her think that her dreams were a prophecy with her wanting to carry out her dreams any means necessary.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She manipulates people who try to get in the way of her pursuit of her senpai, and has also been purposefully pushing Ayano towards a violent path her whole life. She canonically manages to convince nearly all of Japan that she's innocent and that the Journalist is a selfish Glory Hound. He and Kocho lampshade her manipulative tendencies in a couple tapes.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: All the lethal elimination methods she purposes for some of her rivals are all meant to look like accidental deaths (Such as Honami getting crushed by a bookshelf or Ai's micropohone fatally electrocuting her in the middle of her performance).
  • Master Actress: Canonically she's incredibly good at tricking others into thinking she's sweet and innocent, despite being the exact opposite. Canonically, her act manages to fool the media and well-nigh the entirety of Japan.
  • Meaningful Name: In addition to "Aishi" (already explained under Yan-chan's entry) "ryōbo" is Japanese for "matron", and was changed to sound more feminine. A "ryōba" is also a type of handsaw.
  • Missing Mom: She and her husband are out of town for the 10 weeks that Ayano is running amok. Why is that? She's hunting the Journalist, since she discovered he was investigating her again, and wants to put him down for good.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: She canonically murdered the following girls who were in love with her senpai: Sumire Saitozaki, Moeko Rakuyona, Honami Hodoshima, Sumiko Tachibana, Ritsuko Chikanari, and Ai Doruyashi.
  • Never My Fault: She blames the Journalist for her failure to properly confess her feelings to her Senpai, because he had her arrested for Sumire's murder. She never considers that she'd have had no trouble if she hadn't gone for murder as her first solution.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: She clearly isn't stupid and, at least according to one of the Journalist's tapes, Ryoba pretended to be ignorant whenever she could during her murder trial. This was done to trick the court into thinking she was innocent so she could get away scot-free.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Word of God is that if Yan-chan falls in love with a female Senpai, she'd just be happy that her daughter found love.
  • Pet the Dog: Not that it was done out of any kindness, but given how she dealt with her previous rivals, pairing Chigusa with one of her male admirers is much more merciful. Given the two got married later in life, it even worked out outside of just keeping Chigusa from Jokichi.
  • Player Nudge: At the start of every week, she discusses a possible method to eliminate the rival from the competition (making Jokichi reject Kaguya, making Moeko burn herself, crushing Honami, poisoning Sumiko, drowning Ritsuko while she's asleep, electrocuting Ai, getting Teiko expelled, ruining Komako's reputation, pairing Chigusa with another boy, and befriending Sonoko and helping her with a blackmail case). These are the canonical ways that Ryoba dealt with each rival, as they're a major requirement for the Rank S+ "True Ending."
  • Pragmatic Villainy: After her murder of Sumire Saitozaki causes an in-depth police investigation, Ryoba starts to consider non-lethally eliminating further rivals so as to avoid having to deal with the police again. Though this doesn't stop her from considering methods that look like "accidents".
  • Predecessor Villain: She attended the same school her daughter does, and killed at least one person during her time there (canonically six).
  • Promoted to Playable: For 1980s mode. She's the protagonist this time.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: The tenth basement tape makes it clear that she hasn't grown up one bit since she was a teenager. Still lovesick, still giggly, still enthusiastic, still an immature psychotic murderer.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: She does this in Basement Tape #1 when the object of her affections won't call her by her given name because he's never spoken with her before.
Ryoba: [sound of knife] Say. My. Name.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Heavily implied. In Basement Tape #1, she is revealed to have kidnapped her senpai and held him against his will until Stockholm Syndrome kicked in. Between that and Basement Tape #10 (which takes place mere days before the main campaign of the game), they got married and had a daughter, which obviously means that they had sex. Considering how terrified Jokichi is in those two tapes, it is highly unlikely that he consented to any advances willingly. YandereDev has confirmed that this will be further explored.
  • Removing the Rival: According to the tapes, she got rid of some of her rivals through manipulation instead of straight murder (canonically five of them).
  • Retired Monster: Killed a bunch of people during the 80's, managed to convince the nation of her innocence and irrevocably slandered the Journalist, and now she's living as a (seemingly) doting mother with no signs of improvement nor atonement for what she did.
  • Significant Double Casting: Shares a voice actress with her daughter, Ayano. See the entry on Ayano's page for exactly why it's significant.
  • Slasher Smile: The journalist described it in detail. It doesn't sound pretty. 1980s mode has her flash one whenever things go her way.
  • The Sociopath: Hoo, boy. She's way worse than Yandere-chan. Other than her love of her daughter and husband (which is debatable all things considered), she is practically a textbook example: a manipulative liar who can be superficially charming, possesses zero empathy for anyone (even the people she claims to love), and has very few morals allowing her to do just about anything to get what she wants.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She stalked Jokichi for about a year after first meeting him due to being too embarrassed to talk to him and continued doing so when other girls started to show their affection at him.
  • Stalker without a Crush: In 1980s mode, she stalked all her rivals as part of her schemes to eliminate them, which she did to sabotage Jokichi's love life.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Ryoba's concept art looks a lot like her daughter. The only differences are that Ryoba has longer hair, looks older, and has a noticeably curvier figure.
  • Terms of Endangerment: If you listen to the Basement Tapes, you'll hear her use the nickname "darling" quite a bit for her senpai.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: She looks like your average housewife. Not too physically remarkable in any way. Would you be able to look at her and know that she's a psychopathic murderous yandere?
  • Villain of Another Story: She was an obsessive stalker as well.
  • Villain Protagonist: She was a master manipulator and killer who got away with her crimes. She's also the focus of "1980s Mode".
  • Villain with Good Publicity: She managed to convince the entire nation of her total innocence. The official characters page also describes her as someone who gets along very well with everyone in her neighborhood, even though she doesn't actually share much about herself.
  • Walking Spoiler: Saying anything about her at all aside from the fact that she's out of the country for ten weeks reveals at least half the backstory of the game.
  • The Woman Behind the Man: Not only was she a major influence on Ayano's behavior, but, since she is her mother, Ryoba is literally the reason Yan-chan exists.
  • Yandere: Like mother, like daughter. She killed at least one person who got in the way of her love-life in high-school, got away with it, and puts up a sweet front. Being a Yandere seems to be matrilineal.

    Jokichi Yudasei

Mr. Jokichi Aishi / Jokichi Yudasei

In the present
In 1989
Voiced By: Austin Hively

"Love?! But we've never even spoken to each other before!"

The father of our protagonist. He and his wife (who held him captive for so long that he can no longer stand up to her) will be out of town for 10 weeks, so they cannot be interacted with during Story Mode. However, we find out plenty of information about them throughout tapes and Word of God.

1980s mode finally gives him a name: Jokichi Yudasei, and reveals him to be quite the charismatic ladies' man.

  • Abduction Is Love: According to the Basement Tapes, Ryoba kidnapped him so that he could be hers.
  • Alone with the Psycho: In Basement Tape #1 with Ryoba. Poor guy.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: But not to whom you'd expect. If he comes back from America and sees that Ayano has caught herself a male Senpai, he – recalling how Ryoba turned his life upside-down and knowing firsthand what Aishi women are capable of – would be worried for Senpai. This is why, when Ryoba expresses the hope that Ayano will have a boyfriend by the time they return, his reply is a dejected "I hope not."
  • Break the Cutie: Being held captive by Ryoba and forced into Stockholm Syndrome has crushed his spirit.
  • Chick Magnet: In his youth he was this, attracting twelve girls in high school. Unfortunately, one of them was Ryoba.
  • Covert Pervert: For Chigusa Busujima, whose career consists of provocative photo shoots and the like.
  • Doomed by Canon: No matter what you do in 1980s mode, Ryoba will kidnap poor Jokichi and force him to marry her.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Indulges in snark at Ryoba's expense. This is probably a way to cope with his Stockholm Syndrome.
Ryoba: Are you jealous, darling? Are you worried that someone is going to steal your beloved wife away?
Jokichi: That's… actually the last thing I worry about.
Ryoba: Oh, darling! That's so romantic!
    Jokichi: Right...
  • Distressed Dude: He was kidnapped by Ryoba and forced to love her.
  • The Faceless: Unlike his wife, his sprite doesn't show his face. In fact, it's hidden by a glare of light. His face is seen in the video Yandere-chan's Childhood. Sort of. Finally averted as of the introduction of the 1980's mode.
  • Foil: Jokichi's personality in the 1980 mode is pretty much YandereDev's response to people accusing Taro of being plain. Both of them are the love interest to a girl of the Aishi household, but while Taro is ordinary, bookish and doesn't have any ambitions, Jokichi was attractive, friendly and wanted to marry a rich girl.
  • Gold Digger: He wanted to marry into a wealthy family, which is why so many rivals are rich girls.
  • Henpecked Husband: Played for Drama. He has a difficult time standing up for himself against Ryoba, even when she decides to take a long trip to America just before their daughter starts school. It's actually a more extreme case, since the relationship literally started when Ryoba kidnapped him, and she's been keeping an eye on him ever since.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: Zig-zagged, due to shifting Word of God. On the one hand, his instinct is to disapprove of his daughter in a lesbian relationship, owing to Japan's conservative views on homosexuality. However, upon reflection, he would probably encourage such a pairing, since it would likely mean the end of the bloodline of yandere Aishi women.
  • Hidden Eyes: His face in the picture frame is obscured by glare. That said, it's not hard to figure out how he looks; he is obviously designed to resemble an older Senpai.
  • In-Series Nickname: Ryoba always calls him "Darling". Though if you listen carefully, she actually uses it to keep him under control.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Word of God has stated that the various Senpais of the Aishi household share a close kinship with each other, as a way of dealing with their Yandere spouses. Presumably, he'll have this with Taro/Taeko after Yan-chan is successful.
  • Morality Pet: According to the video "Yandere-chan's Childhood," Ayano does care about him, at least a little, since she pretends to be happy and normal for his sake. Maybe her pity for him can't be equated to love, but, for Ayano, that's huge.
  • No Name Given: Prior to 1980s Mode, we only know of him as Ryoba's senpai, with her addressing him exclusively as such. With the release of 1980s Mode, we're given the name of Jokichi Yudasei.
  • Only Sane Man: Literally. We've got his Empty Shell Yandere of a daughter who might become a Serial Killer, his Yandere Giggling Villain of a wife who definitely became a serial killer, and.... this guy. Stockholm Syndrome aside, he comes off as pretty sane.
  • Papa Wolf: Downplayed, but in the video "Yandere Chan’s Childhood", it’s shown that Jokichi tried to get help for Ayano, and some scenes even imply that he outright got into arguments with Ryoba about it. Considering that Ryoba kidnapped him, possibly raped him, and misled a whole damn country into thinking she’s innocent, that's incredibly bold on his part.
  • Parental Abandonment: He and Ryoba are out of town for 10 weeks because Ryoba is hunting down the Journalist.
  • Parents as People: He desperately wants Ayano to be "normal" and is terrified of what she could become. However, it's clear he does love her, and spent her childhood taking her to doctors to try and treat whatever's wrong with her, giving her presents, and trying to make her happy. And, let's face it, him wanting Ayano to be different than all her predecessors is entirely justified of him.
  • Properly Paranoid: Since he knows what it's like to have a Yandere pursue someone, how could he not be worried about his daughter continuing the Aishi family tradition?
  • Rape as Backstory: Implied. The first Basement Tape has him kidnapped by Ryoba, who keeps him captive until he "loves" her. In the present, he is still with her, but is clearly frightened of her - despite them having conceived a child together. Even a "yes" from him in these circumstances would fall under Questionable Consent, because Ryoba is an unstable Yandere and a known murderer who probably wouldn't take "no" for an answer. Word of God says the issue will be tackled fully in future Basement Tapes.
  • Significant Double Casting: Shares a voice actor with (male) Senpai. See Senpai's Significant Double Casting entry for why it's significant.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: In the 'Why Yandere-Chan Lacks Emotions' video, Dev discusses him being the reason why Ayano will consider removing her rivals non-lethally, as he would do his best to raise her to be someone who wouldn't dare take a life.
  • Token Good Teammate: He's the only good person in the Aishi household.
  • Took the Wife's Name: His original surname is Yudasei. He took the Aishi surname because his wife is a psychotic yandere from a matriarchal family who would never accept anything less.
  • Unlucky Everydude: Let's see, a normal high school guy who was kidnapped by a yandere underclassman, tortured into "loving" her, forced to impregnate her with another yandere, and may be a witness to events repeating? He's the very definition of this trope.
  • Walking Spoiler: For the same reason as his wife, because talking about him would reveal that Ryoba is also a Yandere.
  • Why Couldn't You Be Different?: For him, it's actually justified. Jokichi's frightened that Ayano will continue the family tradition, and would be happy if it turned out she was a "normal girl". That said, he still loves her and cares for her.

    The Journalist

The Journalist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_journalist.png

"I shouldn't have gotten involved in that case...with that girl. Pursuing her was the right thing to do...but if I hadn't involved myself with her, I'd still have a career."

Voiced by: Bradley Gareth

A former journalist who was investigating a string of murders on the Akademi campus in the 80's. He has recorded ten cassette tapes that are now scattered around the school grounds. Apparently, he wants his daughter to find them. He appears in person in 1980s mode, trying to expose Ryoba as the psycho she is and to bring justice to her victims.

  • The Alcoholic: Became this after the court case.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Is clearly a shade darker than everyone else; this seems to be his natural skin tone, as opposed to Kyoshi and Asu, who have tans, and the bullies, who are spray-tanned.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Became this after the girl who framed him won.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: In the last of his tapes before he flees the country to avoid and possibly take down Ryoba Aishi for good, he gives a paternal example directed towards his daughter, in the hopes that she recieves his message.
  • Arch-Enemy: Ryoba Aishi. He has spent the late eighties trying to bring her to justice, but she's Out-Gambitted him at every turn. She even managed to do so thirty years later, catching him being "sloppy" in his efforts to expose her. We have yet to find out if they meet in America or (more importantly) if he'll finally succeed in his endeavors.
  • Armed with Pepper Spray: In the late eighties, he brings pepper spray with him at Akademi, which he uses on Ryoba if she tries to attack him or otherwise does anything incriminating around him.
  • Badass Boast: If the player gets close to him in 1980s mode, he'll let out one of these.
Trying to intimidate me? Tch. Don't waste your time. You don't scare me.
  • Badass Longcoat: He wears a trenchcoat. Justified because he wants to keep Ryoba from recognizing him.
  • Big Good: The closest thing this game has to having one. His entire character is trying to bring Ryoba to justice.
  • Clear My Name: Had to after the girl he accused of murder said he was a liar and a pervert.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Should Ryoba murder somebody in front of him, he will quickly run up to her and pepper-spray her.
  • Expy: A dark-skinned, trenchcoat-and-hat-wearing, well-meaning (but consistently-failing) lawful character who seeks to valiantly bring a criminal to justice? Are we talking about The Journalist, or Koichi Zenigata?
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: He got married to his wife after six months of knowing her, because he was in a terrible place when he met her.
  • Hero Antagonist: He attempted to bring a murderer to justice. Unfortunately, his act of altruism ruined his life.
  • Hero of Another Story: He tried to do the right thing and failed. He might also be the Villain of Another Story, considering whose point of view we're looking from.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: He became this after the girl he turned in was acquitted. He saw disgrace in every pair of eyes that looked at him. You see, he found out that a yandere girl was stalking an upperclassman and seemed fairly suspicious back in the 1980's. The Journalist stalked her and found out that she was constantly running around with a mop and a bucket as if she always had to clean something up. Not only that, but any girl that spoke to the stalked upperclassman got into deep trouble that separated them from the boy. So, after much convincing, the Journalist was able to get the yandere taken into custody. Despite the evidence the Journalist found, the yandere girl managed to slip away with some very persuasive acting. Because of this, the Journalist became notorious for being a "pervert" and a "glory-hound".
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: He admits he has no idea why his wife married him.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: He's prepared to let the murderous woman claim one more victim just so he can have proof of her guilt. However, the Journalist slipped up and now he has to flee the country. And our good ol' buddy Ryoba follows him.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Perceptive enough to spot a yandere's actions, and brave enough to try to bring her to justice. Unfortunately, he just happened to pick the wrong target...
  • Inspector Lestrade: Taken to its logical conclusion; he had all the evidence at the ready to prove Ryoba was behind the Akademi murders, but had his reputation completely tarnished by her cleverly-manipulative actions at the time of judgment.
  • Maternal Death? Blame the Child!: He found it hard to love his daughter after his wife died giving birth to her.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Played for drama. One of the reasons why Ryoba was acquitted was because she claimed that he was a lecherous pervert. Ironically, Ryoba herself is a Stalker with a Crush, though for someone slightly older than her.
  • My Greatest Failure: He considers interacting with Ryoba in the first place to be "the worst mistake of [his] life" since she ruined his life.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: He found out who the murderer was and accused her, but without proof, he was laughed out of court and lost his job.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: While he cannot enter the school grounds due to lacking Headmaster's permission to investigate the school, if he does witness Ryoba committing murder, he will run up to her and spray her to submission without a second thought.
  • Parental Neglect: He never really cared for his kid because he blamed her for his wife's Death by Childbirth, even though he knew it was wrong. His daughter basically had to raise herself after he fell into depression.
  • Properly Paranoid: He suspects Ryoba to be Sumire's killer based on few loose evidence that Ui Tunesu provided him with (her being the last person seen with her, her carrying a knife and later a garbage bag), something that Ryoba herself calls him out on when accused. Of course he is right in all of this, even if no one else believes him.
  • Run or Die: After being confronted by his murderous Arch-Enemy for the second time after thirty years, he panics and leaves the country, wondering whether they're crazy enough to follow him. She is.
  • Spanner in the Works: He is one for Ryoba. Specifically, her love confession to her Senpai. Because he managed to nab her right before she could do it, Ryoba's newly gained confidence plummets because it won't be as she wanted it and she fears he'll reject her because he will only see her as "that girl who was accused of murder on national TV".

    The 1980s Rivals

Rivals

Sumire Saitozaki (The Phantom Girl)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sumire_saitozaki.png

A shy girl with a crush on Ryoba's senpai... much to her misfortune. Her elimination serves as the 1980s mode tutorial.

  • Alliterative Name: Her proper name is Sumire Saitozaki.
  • Camping a Crapper: Ryoba lures her into the bathroom to talk about her crush, and murders her there.
  • Doomed by Canon: The main game has established that she was murdered, Ryoba went on trial for it, and she haunts the 3rd floor girls' bathroom at Akademi. So to avoid a time paradox, she's killed off in the tutorial and there is no option to eliminate her peacefully.
  • Nice Girl: The official website states that she was a good person who never wished harm upon anyone.
  • One-Steve Limit: Shares her first name with a member of the Gardening Club in the present day; Sumire Suzuki.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: She is killed to show how ruthless Ryoba is.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's shy and embarrassed about her crush.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Only serves as a tutorial but her death is what caught the Journalist's eye and eventually led him to arrest Ryoba.

Kaguya Wakaizumi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaguya_wakaizumi.png

A girly, bubbly and cheerful girl who spends most of her time in the school plaza chatting with people. She is Ryoba's first rival.

  • Girly Girl: Has the personality, looks, and tastes typically associated to one.
  • Hidden Depths: Kaguya will only agree to follow Ryoba if she has a high enough reputation, suggesting that she doesn't trust others easily despite being gentle and affable.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Her hair is pink and she's a gentle, friendly girl.
  • Sixth Ranger: More like fifth ranger. The official website states that Kaguya recently became the latest addition to the Rainbow Girls group.
  • Warm-Up Boss: She's the first non-tutorial rival in 1980s mode, and the only thing that really prevents Ryoba from just waltzing up and killing her is her habit of hanging out with the Rainbow Girls. Ryoba's suggested method of dealing with her is even non-lethal (sabotaging her events with Senpai), just so the player can test out peaceful elimination methods (which don't figure into the tutorial) without worrying too much about getting a Game Over.

Moeko Rakuyona

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moeko_rakuyona.png

A tomboyish girl who serves as Ryoba's second rival. Tends to hang out with the Rainbow boys most of the time, and is rumored to have a secret 'dangerous' hobby that she could get in a lot of trouble for.

  • Everyone Has Standards: While she's fine with burning the man who took photos of her to death, she doesn't want to murder the innocent homeless people that currently reside in the asylum.
  • Fiery Redhead: Emphasis on the fiery part (she's secretly a pyromanic); she's a redhead with a gung-ho personality. In canon, she becomes a rather literal example since she gets burned to death.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite being a tomboy who's said to be more comfortable around men than other women, the official website mentions that she has an insecurity complex regarding males and constantly feels the need to 'prove herself' to the men around her, showing them that girls can be just as tough as boys.
  • Meaningful Name: The "Moe" in Moeko can be read as "burning". It fits both her fiery personality and her canonical fate.
  • One of the Boys: She can be seen hanging out with the Rainbow boys, and is said to be more comfortable around boys than girls.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Admits to Ryoba she wants to burn the creep that took pictures of her to death.
  • Pyromaniac: Her secret hobby is setting fires in a barrel on school grounds. Naturally, exploiting this is one way Ryoba can eliminate her. It's also canonical. Additionally, her Dark Secret is that due to her hobby, she accidentally burned down an entire building at her old school.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only girl in the Rainbow boys' crew.
  • Tomboy: Ryoba describes her as "a cute tomboy with a gung-ho attitude". Indeed, she reacts positively to masculine topics like Sports, Martial Arts and Violence, while negatively to the feminine Cooking and Gardening topics.
  • Woman on Fire: Her rival-specific elimination method is getting her to accidentally burn herself to death.

Honami Hodoshima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/honami_hodoshima.png

The school's shy and nerdy volunteer librarian, and the third girl to fall in love with Jokichi.

  • Alliterative Name: Honami Hodoshima.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Wears big round glasses to add in her cuteness.
  • Book Worm: She spends all her time in the library and even volunteered to be school librarian.
  • Birds of a Feather: Her suitor is Hachiro Iso, an avid reader who would surely share her love for books.
  • Cute Bookworm: She's cute (especially to Jokichi), loves reading more than anything else, and has volunteered to be the school's librarian.
Ryoba: The only thing I know about this girl is that she loves books.
  • Death by Irony: She adores books and she canonically died via getting squashed by a large bookcase.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her eyes are light blue. She's also a shy, innocent girl who has the misfortune of liking Senpai.
  • Shrinking Violet: Very shy and reserved, which causes her difficulty with social interactions.
  • Squashed Flat: Her unique, canonical, elimination method is getting her crushed by one of the bookshelves in the library.

Sumiko Tachibana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sumiko_tachibana.png

A sporty girl with an aspiration to become a career athlete and obsession with having a healthy lifestyle. She is the fourth rival.

  • Baddie Flattery: Ryoba remarks that Sumiko's desire to eat healthy meals and get exercise is admirable and it is something that should be encouraged. What shouldn't be encouraged, however, is her attraction to Jokichi.
  • School Sport Uniform: Sports one to fit with her 'sporty' theme. She was even showcased wearing the outfit in the trailer video.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Sumiko will head to the home ec room in order to create a nutritious fresh lunch. Which is a perfect opportunity for poison. This was also her canonical fate.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She wears her hair in a ponytail and is an athletic girl.

Ritsuko Chikanari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ritsuko_chikanari.png

Ryoba's fifth rival. An arrogant girl who, fortunately for her chances of winning Jokichi (and unfortunately for her chances of surviving Ryoba), is from one of the wealthiest families in Japan.

  • Alpha Bitch: Acts like your typical haughty high school girl and is very entitled.
  • Lazy Bum: She enrolled in Akademi simply because it was a prestigious school and has zero intention of studying, often spending her time sunbathing by the school's pool.
  • Ojou: She is the daughter of the CEO of Chikanari Heavy Industries, which is known for supplying Saikou Corp with many of the materials needed for their electronic products. That seems to be the reason why she lazes out in school; she has no need to worry about her future after graduation with all the money in her reach.
  • Rich Bitch: The explanation video about 1980s Mode calls her a "terrible person who is rich", which is really the only reason why she's a rival since Jokichi wants to marry into a wealthy family.
  • Spoiled Brat: Her privileged upbringing makes her very demanding and she does whatever she wants. Even if the Pool Sign is at the pool, she will ignore it to continue sunbathing and comment on why people would listen to the sign.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Her canonical fate is to fall into the pool and drown without so much as a struggle. Of course, Ryoba dosed her bento with sleeping pills.

Ai Doruyashi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ai_doruyashi.png
Voiced By: Krexa

A friendly and energetic girl who aspires to be a pop idol one day and Ryoba's sixth rival.

  • Air Guitar: If she survives week 6, on subsequent weeks she’ll spend her free time outside the light music club, sometimes playing getting up to play an air guitar.
  • Death by Irony: If you decide to kill her via her canonical elimination method, as she is electrocuted to death while singing a love song called "Ai Will Shock You". To add more insult to injury, the lyrics use electricity as a metaphor for love.
  • Determinator: Ryoba discusses Ai's desire to be an idol, stating she spends long hours learning how to sing, dance, and write songs.
  • Double Meaning: Her name "Ai" is Japanese and Chinese for "love", meaning some of her lyrics of "Ai Will Shock You" don't just refer to her but love itself. Even the title of the song can be interpreted as "Love Will Shock You," which becomes Triple Meaning when you consider her unique elimination; "I Will Shock You."
  • Expy: Her blue-haired long twintails and the fact that she wants to become a pop idol makes her sound very similar to Hatsune Miku.
  • Genki Girl: She's described in a cutscene as high-spirited and "always smiling".
  • High-Voltage Death: One possible elimination Ryoba suggests. Her song and lyrics are a lot less subtle about it. "Look into my eyes and see the sparks fly" indeed.
  • Idol Singer: Aspires to be one.
  • It's All About Me: The lyrics of her song are a possible subversion, as noted under Double Meaning, "Ai" also means love.
    "Everyone wants Ai"
    "Everyone admires Ai"
    "Everybody dreams of Ai"
  • Nice Girl: She is said to be nice and friendly.
  • Punny Name: "Ai Doru", when spoken as one word, is "Idol", which, as evident by her singing in the school gym, is exactly who she is.

Teiko Nabatasai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/teiko_nabatasai.png

The smartest student in Akademi and Ryoba's seventh rival. Perfect scores on every test, flawless grades in every subject; her prodigical intelligence is widely recognized even overseas.

  • The Ace: She is said to be the "perfect combination of beauty and brains" by Ryoba, and that any guy at school would be honored to have her attention.
  • The B Grade: Her dark secret is that she got a 99 on test and she bribed her teacher to give her a perfect grade.
  • Book Smart: She is a straight-A student with flawless grades in every school subject, and sometimes even invited to universities in foreign countries to give speeches about various academic subjects.
  • Brainy Brunette: Has brown hair and is very intelligent.
  • Expy: A Brainy Brunette high-schooler who wears a bow? Sounds very similar to a certain Literature Club president.
  • Graceful Loser: Even though Teiko figured out that she was framed for expulsion, she took it gracefully and moved on with her life.
  • Hidden Depths: Her reason for coming to the abandoned asylum to try the "test of courage" was that she got tired of being "perfect" and behaving properly all the time.
  • Irony: Her canonical elimination method consists of getting her, a model student, expelled.
  • Omniglot: She is fluent in many different languages.
  • Teen Genius: According to the issue released on week 7 by the Akademi Daily newspaper, Teiko is smart enough to be a college professor despite being a teenager. In fact, she was absent for seven weeks because she was teaching abroad.

Komako Funakoshi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/komako_funakoshi.png

The eighth rival and the most popular girl in school who embodies all of the traits associated with the 'ideal Japanese wife'. Has loads of adoring fans.

  • As You Know: The Akademi Daily issue released on week 8 reminds students of who Komako is, which is redundant In-Universe since she's... you know... the most popular girl in school?
  • Defiled Forever: While downplayed since the man didn't lay a hand on her, she has this attitude towards being taken nude pictures by the creep inside the abandoned asylum, and claims she "could never be a bride" if the police saw those pictures when asking Ryoba to destroy them.
  • Dude Magnet: As the most popular girl in school, according to Ryoba, all male students want her.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Along with having many male admirers, her profile mentions she also has female admirers. The official website explains that they want to learn how to be more like her.
  • Flowers of Femininity: She wears a purple flower on her hair, indicating her feminine charm.
  • Going Commando: Not in the game per se, but her most embarrassing secret is that for many years, she didn't wear any underwear underneath her clothes because she had heard that Shrine Maidens never wore underwear.
  • Hime Cut: To signify her Yamato Nadeshiko character, she wears her long, black hair this style.
  • Loved by All: Something that makes her dangerous to Ryoba's desire to have Jokichi all to herself, but it's also something that Ryoba can use against her, if the player plays their cards right.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Ryoba condescendingly calls her this. She has all the traits of one: kind, intelligent, popular and beautiful.

Chigusa Busujima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chigusa_busujima.png

Ryoba's ninth rival. An exceptionally attractive gravure idolnote  with an almost endless legion of male admirers.

  • Dude Magnet: A lot of male students follow her everywhere during her week and, according to Ryoba, most male students are in love with her.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Although she's a gravure idol and makes a lot of photoshoots striking revealing poses, she states that she would never model nude. This is a common attitude among gravure idols.
  • Famed In-Story: She has already been featured in numerous magazines and become very well-known amongst the young men of Japan despite the fact that she only started her career very recently.
  • Fanservice Model: Is a gravure idol, which is actually a big advantage to Ryoba: with so many boys already admiring her, it'd be easy to match-make her with one of them.
  • Happily Ever After: She was canonically matchmade with Etsuji Odaka, and according to Yandere Dev, they got married later on in life.

Sonoko Sakanoue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sonoko_sakanoue.png

A junior detective who gained fame for helping the police solve a murder mystery, and the final obstacle Ryoba must eliminate before she can be with her Senpai.

  • Alliterative Name: By the letter S; her full name is Sonoko Sakanoue.
  • The Apprentice: Though she seems to have accomplished more than him, she's the Journalist's trainee.
  • Armed with Pepper Spray: She carries OC spray with her for self-defense.
  • Befriending the Enemy: Encouraged by Ryoba; being the protégé of the Journalist, someone who knows Ryoba's guilty of murder, it'd be best to get on her good side by doing her a favor.
  • Birds of a Feather: She and her suitor Hozumi share a passion for justice and seek to bring criminals to justice.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She has shades of this. She brings a camera everywhere at school in case she spots incriminating activity, ditto with a bottle of pepper spray (albeit for self-defense instead). She also requested many students follow her around with cameras in case something were to happen to her. Also, these factors can cause a Game Over.
  • Final Boss: She serves as the final rival in 1980s mode.
  • Former Teen Rebel: She wrote in her diary that she used to be a delinquent with a serious record in the past, and she's afraid that if word ever got out, her reputation and career would be ruined.
  • Japanese Delinquent: She's Japanese and, when she was younger, she was a delinquent who built up a long rap sheet.
  • Kid Detective: She's a teenager who solved a notorious case about a serial killer that had the police going around in circles for a long time. Solving this case launched her career as a junior detective.
  • Loophole Abuse: The Journalist himself is not allowed on school property during the school hours, so he introduces her to the school to potentially do the detective work for him. She, by contrast, is able to return because she used to be a student at Akademi, but she left without graduating due to solving the case. And so, she came back to finish her degree.
  • Teen Genius: She's a teen who was able to figure out a serial killer's "unsolvable" cipher (which led to their arrest) the cops were struggling with and has helped the police solve numerous high-profile crimes, to the point her accomplishments had already done more for her future career than Akademi ever could.

Students

    In General
  • The Bus Came Back: A handful of students were part of the earlier builds before they were removed at one point or another, coming back for the 1980s mode.

    Rainbow Students

Two groups of clubless students who hang out together. Due to their diverse hair colors they are known as the Rainbow Girls and Rainbow Boys.

They were originally the first NPCs (aside from Senpai) to be added into the game, back in 2015. After spending years as the only students in debug builds, they (except for Kokona, Saki and Riku) were removed in order to make room for other students, but were later reintroduced in 1980s Mode.

Mei Kamio/Mei Mio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mei_kamio.png

"Wow...that's pretty gross...I expected better from Kokona-chan..."

A former Junior-year student at school (Class 2-2) who's a Teacher's Pet . Her hair and eyes are cobalt blue.

  • Alliterative Name: Both her first and last name start with an 'm'. That said, the "Mio" part is just a nickname since her real last name is "Kamio".
  • Anime Hair: Cobalt blue with ahoge. Prior to her first redesign, she wore her hair in three ponytails.
  • Hidden Depths: Used to be in the Light Music Club. One wonders what instrument she played.
    • Prior to the November 2015 update, she was in the Gardening Club.
    • invokedDruelbozo heavily implied she was a bit of a bookworm by giving her a pair of reading glasses and a stereotypical librarian's hairstyle. Word of God later quietly confirmed this by giving her the Teacher's Pet persona.
  • Idiot Hair: Subverted. She had a strand of hair sticking up that was tall enough to be cut off by her profile picture. However, being a studious bookworm, she was precisely the opposite of the associated stereotype.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: It's difficult to see in her profile pic, but her hair (aside from the ahoge) was pulled back into one of these as of her second hair redesign.
  • Teacher's Pet: She was the only female student with this persona until the science club was added.

Koharu Hinata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/koharu_hinata_1989.png

"Seriously? I didn't think there would be anyone like that in our school..."

A former second-year student at school, in class 2-1, the same class as Ayano. She has the Heroic persona. Her hair and eyes are green.

  • Badass Bystander: She has the Hero persona – in early builds was was even the only person outside the Martial Arts Club to have that trait. Keep in mind that, unlike the Martial Arts Club members, she most likely doesn't have any training whatsoever, but she'll still attempt to take Ryoba down if she sees her murdering someone or carrying a corpse.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Color aside, Koharu probably has one of the more "normal" hairstyles of the girls.
  • Hidden Depths: An unusual case of losing these as development continued.
    • She was originally in the Photography Club and appeared to be quicker to notice Yan-chan taking panty shots than the other students.
    • From the "School Redesign"note  build to the "Personalities & Photography"note  build, she was coded as a Hero, the only student not in the Martial Arts Club to be one. If she saw Yan-chan murder or drag a body, she'd jump in to stop her personally. However, she later lost that unique personality. When she came back in 1980s mode, she once again had the "Hero" persona.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Meta example. For most of her time in the debug builds she was just a Loner or Social Butterfly, but was later given the Heroic personality. She will fight Ryoba if triggered.

Yuna Asahina/Yuna Hina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuna_asahina.png

"I wasn't sure if I should say anything about it, but I saw her doing that last week, too..."

A former first-year student at school, in Class 1-2. She has the Snitch persona. Her hair and eyes are yellow.

  • Bookworm: She enjoys reading.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Wears her ponytail on the left side of her head.
  • Hidden Depths: In the earliest builds, she was in the Science Club, implying she was a bit of a nerd. The 1980s mode has her loving singing, but she's too shy to do it in public.
  • The Quiet One: Her 1980s' info mentions her to be "a quiet and introverted girl".

Yui Horio/Yui Rio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yui_horio.png

"They had it coming! Don't worry — I won't tell anyone what I saw."

A former first-year student at school, in Class 1-1. She has the "Spiteful" personality trait, meaning that she will approve of murder if the victim is someone she dislikes. Her hair and eyes are fire-engine red.

  • Ambiguously Gay: In a full-body reference photo of the Rainbow Six, she is shown trying to grab Yuna's butt.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She was given the Evil persona in February 2016. If she saw you commit murder, she would express her approval. However, she would still stop talking to you, because she didn't want to be considered an accomplice if you got caught. Word of God has also said that she probably didn't actually like the rest of the Rainbow Six, and only spent time with them as a form of social protection. Downplayed after the 'Evil' persona was re-defined as Spiteful, after which she would only approve of the murder of someone who bullied her or was particularly unpopular.
  • Brutal Honesty: In 1980s mode, her info describes her to be "a brutally honest girl with a sharp tongue".
  • Evil Redhead: Had bright red hair, and would be impressed and excited if she saw you kill someone she didn't like.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While she may smirk and grin at you murdering a student she apparently will not bully anyone as to when the Bullies were being introduced Yandere Dev had said she would not bully another student.
  • False Friend: She may hang out with the other "Rainbow Girls", and they may think that she is their friend, but she would still turn on any one of them who developed a low reputation.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Wore her ponytail on the right side of her head.
  • Finger-Tenting: Did this when she spotted the body of someone she hated, along with the mother of all smirks.
  • Hypocrite: She would hate anyone who bullied her, but she would also have No Sympathy for a bullied student, even if she had also been bullied by the same people.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: She went from being evil, approving of any murder she saw, and promising to keep your secret safe, to being spiteful, only approving of some murders, and shockingly calling the cops when other students were killed. She was still a kitten-hating jerk, and the category of murders she would approve of included any student unpopular enough to be bullied, even if said students were her friends. So while she may not have been as cruel and heartless as previously, she was still by no means a good person.
  • Jerkass: There was never much evidence of this in-game, persona aside. Outside the game, though, the Dev's own artists built this up as a defining part of Yui's personality.
    • Some of Druelbozo's pictures imply she had a habit of picking on the rest of the Rainbow Six. One full-body reference of the group shows her reaching out to Yuna in what was described as "getting that booty." Another commissioned work shows Yui stealing Mei's glasses.
    • An unused picture from the bucket-based update video shows this; while everyone else reacts with disgust after Yan-chan splashes liquids on Kokona, Yui smiles and gives a thumbs-up.
    • Then there's this fanart (featured on Dev's blog) of Kokona burning to death. While most of the girls are backing away in horror, Yui smirks as she snaps a photo with her cellphone.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Inverted. She was Spiteful, enjoys violence, and hates cats.
  • No Sympathy: For anyone bullying her or any unpopular students, if you killed them.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • She would boost your reputation if you complimented her or gave her an octodog. Seems she wasn't the completely ungrateful type at least.
    • She would show shock if anyone she does not dislike got murdered, and would call the cops and try to convince others that Ayano is a killer.
  • Psycho Lesbian: Aside from the fact that she, like the other girls, could become attracted to Yan-chan if Yan-chan maxed out her seduction, there's also the promo art of her trying to grope Yuna's butt.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Had one if she saw Yan-chan murder someone she didn't like, as well as the first time you encountered her the following day.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her eyes were red, and she had a Spiteful persona, meaning you could kill certain people in front of her and she wouldn't do a thing.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: In some late-2015-era builds, she was in the Sewing Club (which no longer exists).
  • Token Evil Teammate: She was the only member of the Rainbow Six who was Spiteful.

Sora Sosuke

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sora_sosuke_1989.png

A former senior student at Akademi, in Class 3-1. His hair and eyes are teal.

Ryusei Abikoki/Ryusei Koki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryusei_abikoki.png

A former junior, in Class 2-2. His hair and eyes are indigo blue.

  • Determinator: A hard-working guy who doesn't give up easily at everything he does.
  • Nerd Glasses: Was given a pair of these in September 2017 (along with his female counterpart, Mei).
  • Teacher's Pet: As of the 2017/9/1 update, he was the only Rainbow Boy who still had this persona, in order to fit with his bookish personality.

Hayato Haruki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hayato_haruki_1989.png

A former student. His hair and eyes are green, and he was in class 2-1.

  • Alliterative Name: Both his first name and his last name start with an 'h'.
  • Hidden Depths: In a few builds, he wore the same headband used by the Martial Arts Club despite not being a member. No one knew why. Perhaps he was a bit of a ditz?
  • Took a Level in Badass: When he was reintroduced in 1980s mode, he was given the Heroic persona. He will try to take Ryoba down if he sees her murdering someone.

Sota Fuyuki/Sota Yuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sota_fuyuki.png
"The show is about Miyuki's struggle to cut it as a magical girl even though she's relatively weak, and none of the other magical girls respect her. Trust me, man, this show is freaking amazing."

Voiced by: Nathan Sharp

A former freshman student, in Class 1-2. His hair and eyes are yellow.

  • The Generic Guy: Even by the Rainbow Boys' standards, he didn't really stand out - his hair color wasn't that farfetched to a Westerner's eyes, and its style was extremely common. His only real personality trait was that he was a fanboy of Magical Girl shows like Magical Girl Pretty Miyuki - and after he was removed, this trait was given to a member of the Science Club instead.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his plain appearance, he was actually a massive Otaku and interested in Magical Girl Pretty Miyuki.
  • Otaku: He was a fan of magical girl anime.
  • Pungeon Master: He loves to make horrible puns.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He was a massive fan of magical girl anime.
  • The Prankster: He enjoys pulling harmless pranks on people.

Haruto Hisayuto/Haruto Yuto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haruto_hisayuto.png
"I like the bikini model. She's my favorite character."

A former first-year student at school, Class 1-1. His hair and eyes are red, and he has the "Spiteful" persona.

  • Alliterative Name: His first name and his last name begin with an 'H'.
  • All Men Are Perverts: He agreed to check out the show that Sota had been recommending to him only after Sota told him that one of the characters is a "swimsuit model who's really busty". His favorite episode was the one where "they went to the hot springs," and the bikini model was his favorite character; he wanted her to get more screentime in Season 2.
  • Evil Redhead: He had red hair and was a Spiteful student.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He had a deeper voice than Sota.
  • Face–Heel Turn: A meta-example. Unlike his female counterpart Yui Rio, who had always been Evil, Haruto started as a perfectly normal Teacher's Pet before having his persona changed to Evil and then Spiteful.
  • Fiery Redhead: Shown multiple times throughout development.
    • He was originally in the Martial Arts Club before its real members were implemented in November 2015.
    • In that same build, he was used to demonstrate what happens if a boy witnesses Yan-chan commit murder and she gets away with it. He told Yan-chan to her face that he was going to tell everyone he can what she did (which will constantly drain her reputation).
    • As of September 2017, he was given the "Evil" personality type, which was fiery in its own way. (This was changed in March 2018 to the "Spiteful" personality).
  • Hidden Depths: He may have seemed like any other generic Rainbow Boy, but his Spiteful personality meant that he would have no problem with the murder of anyone he didn't like.
    • His conversations with Sota showed that he had pretty high standards on anime, and didn't like it when shows start out bad just so they can surprise the audience later on.
  • No Sympathy: For anyone he hated and saw murdered.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He had red eyes and a "Spiteful" persona.
  • Spear Counterpart: To Yui Rio - much more so than the other boys were to their female equivalents. They had always been in the same class, usually in the same club (until Yui was moved to Cooking to test out the Framing mechanic), and were originally the only two students in the entire game with Spiteful personas.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He was the only Rainbow Boy - and originally the only male student - with a Spiteful personality.

    The Delinquents

The Delinquents

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/male_delinquents_1989.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/female_delinquents_1989.png
Does this look like a club to you? Beat it.
"Huh?! You got a death wish?!"

The Delinquents are two gangs (five boys and five girls) who hang around school's incinerator. Like the present-day delinquents, they all have the Violent personality and will attack if they feel threatened, but may also aid Ryoba if she does favors for them.

Originally just placeholder designs, the delinquents first appeared in early builds as an obstacle for Ayano in the present day. They were later replaced by a different all-male gang, with completely different names, designs, and backstories. The placeholder designs were repurposed for 1980s Mode.

Tropes related to all the Delinquents

  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Sure, they're delinquents, but they are nowhere near as bad as Ryoba, the Yakuza, or even spiteful students like Yui Rio and Haruto Yuto. They do not commit, aid in, or approve of murder (and will in fact mess you up if they see that you are guilty of it), and they are mostly willing to keep to themselves if you don't mess with them.
  • Batter Up!: Two of the Delinquents wield a baseball bat.
  • Blood Knight: They jeer at and threaten Ryoba if she intrude on them, and if she approaches them with a weapon drawn, they get ready for a fight.
  • Cool Mask: The girls wear surgical masks with drawings on them.
  • Crowbar Combatant: Two of them wield a crowbar.
  • Delinquent Hair: The boys have '80s-delinquent style pompadours, and the girls have long hair with neon-colored streaks.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Not even Yan-chan possessed by a freaking demon could take them in a fight. Averted as of 1980s mode.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Ne'er-do-wells though they may have been, if they see you with a corpse (or part of one), they will waste you on the spot.
  • Freudian Excuse: The girls were all bullied previously and turned to delinquency to stand up for themselves.
  • Implacable Man: Trying to fight one of them unprepared will not end well. To put it in perspective, they were literally invincible in early builds. Not even the Easter Eggs that One Hit Killed everyone else with an AI (Senpai included) had any effect on them. The movement of most NPCs in the game (students and teachers) was once restricted to a field reaching only as far out as the pool. The incomplete delinquents, on the other hand, could and would chase you anywhere. Yes, anywhere. Even if you tried glitching out of the map or teleporting to the Void, they would still hunt you down. They also had infinite acceleration (meaning Falcon Mode became useless after about fifteen seconds), so if you provoked them, you were basically screwed. They could even follow Ayano home, so she wasn't even safe if she could successfully end the day.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Ya reckon? As YanDev noted, the boys, in particular, resembled 80's-era delinquents (as seen in, say, AKIRA or Great Teacher Onizuka) rather than modern ones – current-era delinquents typically have bleached hair, like Osoro. As of April 2018, they were replaced with more fleshed-out, era-appropriate characters, and the placeholder delinquents appear in the 1980s mode instead.
  • Jerkass: None of them are terribly nice. If you approach them, they will mock you, and even crack a joke about breaking your cello if you have the case. They are also rudely brush you off if you try to speak to them. Then again, what else do you expect from delinquents?
  • One-Hit KO: In early builds, provoking one of them would have them clock you in the skull with their weapon, leaving Yan-chan comatose and leading to a Game Over (where the rival likely got to confess to Senpai unimpeded).
  • Pipe Pain: Two of them carry a lead pipe as a weapon.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Despite being delinquents, they're not shown causing trouble on campus. They seem perfectly willing to keep to themselves, and while they do insult and threaten Ryoba if she walks into their territory, they don't actually attack her unless she pulls a weapon on them, tries to attack them, kills someone in front of them, or is seen holding a corpse or body part.
  • Put on a Bus: In the video introducing the modern day Delinquents, YandereDev jokingly sent these ones through a "time portal" to 1989, since they look more at home in that time period anyway. When the 1980's mode was released, the old Delinquents were indeed there.
  • Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: Some of them wield bokken or shinai.
  • Would Hit a Girl: They have zero qualms about hitting Ryoba.

Taichi Hiranaka

  • Beneath the Mask: He only "role-plays" as a delinquent at school, and apparently acts like a different person elsewhere.

Shichiro Kurosapu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3cfbfb88_cfb4_4eec_8a52_2e5cdc51be8a.png

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: He only joined the delinquents to impress girls and completely changed his persona to become a "bad boy".

Togo Atatsuma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/179b335d_7f06_4a90_bd0e_8c7bef43f279.png

  • Big Brother Worship: He's the Yakuza's younger brother, and will set you up with his services if you do him a big enough favor. He's been described as adoring and looking up to his big brother. However, the Yakuza actually wanted him to stay on the right path and not become a criminal.
  • I Owe You My Life: He says this word by word after Ryoba helped him defeat a local gang he had provoked to show that he is incredibly thankful towards her for saving his life.

  • Does Not Like Men: She's been bullied by boys all her life, and started her all-female gang to help girls protect themselves against them.
  • Punny Name: Her name is the literal cognate for "Teal Streak" - what she was formerly referred to as.

Doremi Shimahara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ca78071f_bb6e_485b_b1c5_6e1f91af8611.png

  • Bilingual Bonus: Her mask has kuso (くそ) written on it. That word is typically translated as "shit" (although it's actually a relatively mild swear, more akin to "crap").
  • Tomboy: Her parents tried to make her act like a proper lady throughout her life, so she rebelled and became one of these. This got her bullied by her classmates, who belittled her for not acting like a traditionally feminine girl. She became a delinquent following this to stand up to her bullies.

Murasaki Nobumuto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/74b2f5c1_2a87_416e_8448_5c09e42df9e1.png

  • Scary Teeth: Her mask puts an emphasis on this.
  • Slasher Smile: She has a sharp-toothed grin drawn on her mask. She used to be bullied for her crooked teeth, so this is an attempt by her to make it part of her identity.

Akari Komiyaku

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/329e0997_9d9e_428e_bb34_14f359f5249a.png

  • Butch Lesbian: She's a confirmed lesbian and is a tough fighter.
  • Gayngst: She became a delinquent after being bullied over her feelings for another girl.

Raimu Ichijo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ff305b9e_832e_4225_b67f_38fd709bd07e.png

  • Bullying the Disabled: She was mercilessly bullied for the scars on her back, which led her to join the female gang.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: She's a badass delinquent who has a large scar shaped like an X on her back, which is from a car accident she survived in her backstory.
  • Scars Are Forever: Has a giant X-shaped scar on her back after surviving a car accident.

    Student Council

Student Council

  • Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Following the disappearance of Sumire Saitozaki on school grounds, the members of the Student Council were told to be alert for suspicious behaviour and were authorized to carry pepper spray and zip-tie cables.
  • Armed with Pepper Spray: As a result of Sumire's disappearance, the school gave each of them a can of pepper spray and zip-tie cables and allowed them to use them on anyone who presents a threat to the other students.
  • Cast Full of Pretty Boys: Unlike the all-female squad from Ayano's time, the 1989 Student Council consists of four male heartthrobs, all of whom are extremely popular with the female students.
  • Custom Uniform: With a white and red color pattern, just like the Student Council from Ayano's time.
  • Foil: To the modern-day Student Council. The Student Council of both Ryoba and Ayano's times are a set of students who are always alert to their surroundings and are by far the most difficult students to deal with. However, while Megami's Student Council is exclusively composed of female members whom all are rumored to have a Dark Secret, Reiichi's Student Council is all-male and don't have any sort of rumors floating around them.
  • Hates Being Touched: Just like the modern-day Student Council members, these guys will push Ryoba if she gets too close to them.
    Reiichi: Back off.
    Ken: Oops, sorry!
    Joze: Desculpe! (Excuse me!)
    Daisaku: Too close, girlie.

Reiichi Tanaami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/817e9cc1_1857_4036_87eb_15b35ef3b2eb.png

The President of the Student Council. Formerly the Vice President, he replaces Ichiko Saikou after she graduated in 1988. Known for his cold and icy personality, but has proven to be extremely dependable.

  • Chick Magnet: He has many female admirers who fantasize about turning him into a Defrosting Ice King.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: His light blue eyes are as piercing and cold as his character.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has long, platinum blond hair that's tied back into a pony tail.
  • Meaningful Name: The writing "rei" in Reiichi is a homonym which means "cold", and "ichi" is "number one". As the Student Council President, he is at the top of the student hierarchy and also known for being quite aloof.
  • The Stoic: Described as having a "cold and icy" personality. Even though he has yet to have a voice actor, his lines when Ryoba gets too close to him or when he stops a fight between her and a delinquent showcase this frigidity quite perfectly.
    "Back off."
    "Cease immediately."

José Silva/Joze Shiuba

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/17ae1976_84e7_40dc_8928_5d0b210d1c21.png

Treasurer of the student council, a genius with numbers. He is a foreign exchange student from Brazil so his Japanese is quite rough. Many girls at school find him to be 'exotic'.

  • Calling Your Attacks: He yells "pepper spray!" in Portuguese when using it on Ryoba.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: He's from Brazil, looks the part, and speaks with an accent. This also explains his blunt speech when he stops the fight between Ryoba and a delinquent or when reporting a dead body to the teacher; he’s not very familiar with Japanese.
  • Good with Numbers: Probably why he's the treasurer.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Many of his lines are in Brazilian Portuguese, and he sprinkles Portuguese words even in English sentences when flustered.
  • Precision F-Strike: If the teacher thinks he’s pranking because the corpse he reported to them is out of sight, he will let out a "What the hell is going on here", albeit in Portuguese.

Ken Kyonashima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/772c22e0_ed66_4856_99c0_646121d115fe.png

Secretary of the student council. A humble and modest young man who makes friends very quickly.

  • Alliterative Name: Both his first and last name start with the letter K.
  • Oblivious to Love: Per his student profile, he is "completely oblivious to the fact that dozens of girls at school have huge crushes on him."
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: He has peach-colored hair, is said to be humble and modest, and his lines give him the image of a polite, soft-spoken person.

Daisaku Aragaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7cd433fd_62bb_4c2a_8154_8e3d82f8017a.png

A reformed delinquent working hard to redeem himself and is now the enforcer of the student council.

  • Aggressive Negotiations: He threatens to kick both Ryoba's and the delinquent's asses as a way to stop them from fighting.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: According to his student profile, his "Dangerous Bad Boy" aura gives him many female admirers.
  • Former Teen Rebel: He's still a teen, but this trope works as he goes from a delinquent to a member of the student council. Downplayed because he retains the rough attitude.

    Cooking Club

Banri Masayuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/166173da_c949_4121_902f_18b3dfc1f49c.png

  • Expy: His hair model is based off a fan's recreation of Izumi Miyamura from Horimiya. He also has the same hair and eyes coloration as the guy.
  • Hidden Depths: He will reject any junk food offered to him, implying that aside from love he also cares about health.
  • In Love with Love: He always thinks of romantic love and only joined the club in the hope that learning cooking will impress girls. Fittingly, his crush Kaguya has a positive opinion of cooking.

Ui Tunesu / Witness-Chan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/student_25.png

Hey, Ryoba-chan... I saw you take a knife out of the Cooking Club... why did you do that?
A former student used to demonstrate the reaction of students with the Loner persona (then the only persona) to murder. She hung out by the incinerator all day, putting her in the perfect location to see Yandere-chan murder Victim-chan. She returns for 1980s Mode, where she demonstrates the game's reputation feature by noticing Ryoba carrying a knife, which Ryoba must make an excuse for.
  • The Bus Came Back: Returns in 1980s mode and notices Ryoba carrying a knife, forcing Ryoba to make up an excuse on the spot.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Both a deep red.
  • Meaningful Name: Back when she had the name "Witness-Chan." Even after being given an official name, she still serves a similar purpose, being the witness that saw Ryoba holding a knife, of which she must make an excuse for to salvage her reputation. Ui's account is even brought up by the journalist during Ryoba's trial.
  • No Name Given: At the time when she was introduced as a mere placeholder, she was merely called "Witness-Chan." 1980's mode revealed her name to be Ui Tunesu.
  • Punny Name: Ui Tunesu = Engrish for "witness".
  • Palette Swap: Of Saki Miyu's original appearance. though Ui's hairstyle was later changed as well.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • For Yandere-chan's attempt to get away with murdering Victim-chan in the earliest builds.
    • She makes her cameo appearance by the end of 1980's mode, as a key witness who saw Ryoba with a knife after she murdered Sumire eleven weeks ago.

  • For Great Justice: After being traumatized by an unspecified crime, he developed a hatred for criminals and is considering a career in law enforcement. Hooking up with a famous detective like Sonoko would naturally be a no-brainer for him.
  • In-Universe Nickname: "Study-Kun A" for always spending time in the library. It comes from the invokedreal-world nickname he had prior to being given a real name.
  • Noodle Incident: He is said to be traumatized after witnessing a horrific crime, but there’s no detail of what he went through exactly.

Other

    The Yakuza

Atatsuma/"The Yakuza"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yansim_80s_yakuza.png
A member of the Yakuza (Japanese organized crime), and the older brother of the delinquent Togo Atatsuma. He fulfils a similar purpose to Info-chan — granting the player favors and playing a part in some elimination methods. However, his services and demands are far more extreme than hers — the Yakuza has access to weapons, hard drugs, and other extremely illegal things, such as offering ransom money for kidnapped victims. Ryoba can gain access to his services by doing a big favor for Togo, who will then recommend her to him. The first favor will be for free, as thanks for helping out his little brother, but the rest will most definitely not.
  • Arms Dealer: Among other things, he deals in weapons trafficking, and can supply Ryoba with some of them.
  • Deadly Euphemism: If the sample text given for his abduction of Osana is anything to go by, this is how he would communicate with Ryoba. Justified, since both he and Ryoba would want plausible deniability if someone were to stumble upon their correspondence.
  • Drugs Are Bad: He can supply Ryoba with hard drugs to frame her rivals. A rival caught with drugs will be expelled and arrested immediately.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: For all his awful deeds, he has a little brother that thinks the world of him and wants to be just like him. The affection is mutual, though the Yakuza would much prefer it if his brother didn't follow in his footsteps.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He's willing to do Ryoba a big favor at no cost because she helped his little brother with something. He's also dedicated to keeping his brother's living situation comfortable, and genuinely wants him to stay on the straight-and-narrow.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Meta example; YandereDev toned down the gruesomeness of the Yakuza's services for both gameplay and story purposes sometime after introducing him. His demand for kidnapped victims as currency for harvesting or trafficking would cause the player to rapidly run out of victims to kidnap and lead to a game over; therefore, it was changed to holding students hostage for ransom. YandereDev also explored the possibility of earning his services if the player helps reform his younger brother away from delinquency. As far as story, YandereDev has explored different possibilities, such as the Yakuza believing in a warped sense of justice or only taking part in such villainy because he has no choice in the matter.
  • Evil Parents Want Good Kids: A non-lethal way to get payment for his services is to set his younger brother on the straight-and-narrow path, as he doesn't want his brother to get involved with crime like him.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Info-chan, though it's more like evil-er counterpart. He, like her, serves as a shopkeeper — but while Info-chan serves as an information broker and only flirts with illegal behavior, he is a criminal stated to be involved in theft, murder, organ trafficking, and human trafficking. Info-chan just wants blackmail material and panty shots to sell to perverted schoolboys, while the Yakuza is involved with kidnapping students for ransom and can make rivals "disappear".
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He's a member of organized crime who's involved in drug dealing, murder, larceny, organ theft, and human trafficking, among other things, and has probably killed more people than Ryoba and Ayano will ever have a chance to in-game. But in regards to the player, he's just a source for some... extreme services.
  • Hitman with a Heart: He's part of an organized crime family, and the payment for his services is live victims so that he can squeeze ransom money from their families. With that said, the man adores his younger brother and would do anything to keep him safe.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: YandereDev describes him as someone who's willing to do anything to make sure his little brother is safe and happy. "Anything" includes organized crime and kidnapping people.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: He's still a ruthless criminal, but he has understandable reasons for what he does, he truly loves his little brother and doesn't want him to follow down the same path, and he has something of a moral code — something Ryoba does not.
  • Morality Pet: The love that this asshole has for his brother is his only redeeming factor.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: What does he do with the people you kidnap for favors, or the rivals you sic him on? It could be Organ Theft, or sex slavery, or perhaps something even worse. All we know is that you've just handed a person over to a shady member of organized crime, and that it'll probably mean something bad.
  • Only Known By His Nickname: So far, he's only known as "the Yakuza," and he refuses to give his name to Ryoba, saying "The less we know about each other, the better." However, given that his brother is named Togo Atatsuma, odds are the Yakuza's surname is Atatsuma as well.
  • Organ Theft: YandereDev states that he's involved in organ trafficking.
  • Secret Shop: When you get down to it, he's basically this. Whereas Info-chan basically contacts you herself and requires relatively simple-to-get currency in exchange for simpler services, the Yakuza is only accessed after a Side Quest is completed, and offers more powerful tools and outright elimination of rivals in exchange for a much harder to acquire "Currency".
  • Sex Slave: Suggested to be what he might do to the people you kidnap for him.
  • Snuff Film: It's implied he controls part of a market of them, and Ryoba might be able to send him snuff films, instead of kidnapped students, in exchange for his "services".
  • Tattooed Crook: He has a snake tattoo visible on his arms, like any true member of the Yakuza.
  • Trapped in Villainy: His backstory video suggests that one of his parents died, forcing him to take up crime to support his younger brother since conventional jobs weren't enough to get by. It's also suggested that his boss threatens his younger brother to make sure he follows his orders.
  • Vigilante Man: One of the possible motives YandereDev has planned for him is that he only targets corrupt authority figures such as Dirty Cops and Corrupt Corporate Executives, and harvests their organs so that they can actually be of some benefit to society. Ryoba would manipulate him into kidnapping her rivals by deceiving him into thinking they are just as bad as the people he targets.
  • Villain of Another Story: Sympathetic qualities aside, when not helping Ryoba in her schemes, he's still busy conducting his criminal business elsewhere.
  • Waistcoat of Style: He wears one, and generally seems to prefer a formal dress sense. This is actually accurate to real life, as Yakuza members are known for wearing nice suits.
  • Yakuza: What he's a part of. He can use his connections to help out Ryoba.
