Boiling Isles

Hexside

    Luz Noceda
A Human from Earth that currently studies every track at Hexside. Also Amity's girlfriend.
  • Action Girl: Just because Luz can't cast magic like most people on the Isles doesn't mean she's a pushover. She's willing to not only launch an ice glyph right at Boscha's mother, but she doesn't hesitate to attack Amirani after she turns into a giant Abomination monster, blowing up her stomach to expose her weak point.
  • Accidental Murder: As "The Spelling Bee Car" reveals, she accidentally killed the Class Pet of the Healing track classroom by giving them a belly rub.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: After Chapter 14, Luz has to deal with the fact that her Zany Scheme to get Amity and Skara to become friends has Gone Horribly Wrong to the point Skara leaves the Boiling Isles just to get away from Amity.
    • After that, she also has to deal with the fact that not only did two witches, Amelia and Cat, die because she sent them on a Suicide Mission, but is also Forced to Watch Amirani kidnapping Amity right in her eyes.
    • The Blight Ball then adds another heap of angst when Luz is forced to shoot Amity's bile sac in order to kill Amirani, destroying the woman while also crippling Amity and leaving her at death's door. And although the latter is fixed by Persephone, the former sticks.
  • Adaptational Badass: She has a lot more glyphs to work around this time, which she puts to good use against Amirani.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: While Luz in canon could be impulsive and oblivious, she'd at least listen to people who knew better than her sometimes. In here, she decides to go forward with her "get Amity and Skara to become friends" scheme even after Gus and Willow tell her it's a bad idea, and when tension begins sprouting between the duo.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • She and Amity were just friends in the original story, but thanks to Boscha and Skara's prodding, the two become girlfriends after Chapter 2.
    • Luz and Skara are strangers in canon, but in here, they form a bit of a connection and become honest friends. To the point they're the most joyous to see each other during the Blight Ball's Big Damn Reunion.
    • She and Boscha didn't see eye-to-eye in canon, and the one time they did, Luz fought against her in order to make her stop her bullying tactics. In here, they're at least civil towards each other.
  • Always Save the Girl: Every time Amity's in danger, whether by a Mandragora or Amirani's hand, Luz is always the first one to leap and try to save her. Unfortunately, every time she tries, something happens that forces her to stay put. She finally gets the chance to fulfill this trope during the Blight Ball, where she saves Amity from Amirani's kamikaze attack with a barrier glyph.
  • Anger Born of Worry: She's quite close to reaching her boiling point several times during Chapter 25, but her anger is born from her fear and concern over Amity's safety.
  • And I Must Scream: She's well aware of what she's doing while under Azura's control as the second Golden Guard, but can do nothing about it.
  • An Ice Person: An ice glyph is part of her collection, which she puts to good use against Amirani when she threatens Amity.
    • The magigun she brings with her to the Elemental Isles is equipped with an ice glyph, as well.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: After handing Skara the letter Boscha gave her, Luz asks her if it's good, bad, or a prank. Though given Boscha's preferred type of prank, she might have a reason to worry.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Delivers a string of these to Amity, pointing out not only how she doesn't approve of how blatantly she makes her dislike of Boscha known, but the sheer lengths she'll go through to prove it.
  • Ascended Extra: After spending most of Act 1 being Demoted to Extra, Act 2 gives her back some plot relevance by having her become more involved with the overall plot, even leading the charge during the Blight Ball.
  • Badass Adorable: A human girl who's willing to raise her voice against the Blight parents to get some answers.
  • Badass in Distress: She gets kidnapped by the Golden Guard in order to get the location of the portal door key out of her.
  • Barrier Warrior: Uses a barrier glyph to form a barrier around herself, Amity, and Odalia before Amirani blows herself up.
  • Bearer of Bad News: She's the one who ultimately tells Amity how the whole chapter 14 fiasco was caused by her and her Zany Scheme.
    • It doesn't get better when she has to tell both Amity and Skara that Boscha's not only dead, but stuck in an interdimensional train, though she at least lets them see them themselves.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Luz's an absolute sweetheart to just about everybody, so it's quite telling whenever she shows herself being angry at something.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: She's almost completely silent as the second Golden Guard, which also happens to be her most dangerous form.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She wastes no time summoning a barrier around herself, Amity, and Odalia with a barrier glyph to protect them from Amirani's suicide attack.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Yells this to Viney while trying desperately to stop the griffinified Skara from going on another rampage.
  • Big "NO!": Shouts this once she realizes the Boiling Isles-exclusive Azura the Good Witch books means she no longer has a complete collection back home, and Skara tries to reassure by claiming she can always boast about being the second biggest fan of the series.
  • Blithe Spirit: This is Luz we're talking about. Skara is quick to mention all the things she's accomplished since joining Hexside.
  • Blue Is Heroic: She wears a blue tuxedo for the Blight Ball.
  • Bottomless Magazines: The magigun she takes, being attached to a glyph, has effectively endless ammo that she uses to go ham on both Amirani and the Salamanders. Unfortunately, the latter features her discovering its cooldown...
  • Break the Cutie: Alongside Amity, Chapter 14 deals a pretty heavy hit to Luz. Her Zany Scheme to try get Amity and Skara to become friends not only fails miserably, but Amity's true form is unmasked and her temper is revealed, alongside getting angry at Luz once she realizes this was all a part of her scheme, and Skara gets so sick of being abused that she quits the Boiling Isles for the Boiling Underworld, a decision she comes to regret.
  • Broken Faceplate: Using The Power of Love, Luz regains enough of her faculties to shoot herself hard enough to crack and shatter Prometheus'mask, releasing herself from Azura's grasp... Mostly.
  • Broken Pedestal: She doesn't take well the revelation that Azura was not only Real After All, but was responsible for creating the magic system, and the taboo magic that's caused so many problems for everyone.
    • Even before that, however, she had a case of this with Amity, not only disapproving her petty, blame-throwing attitude, but getting to see firsthand the event that caused Boscha to snap, and what Amity did to her.
    • What little respect she had for Azura evaporates after "The Origin Story Car", where it's revealed she's not only responsible for Boscha's status as a Heinz Hybrid, but that she had her enslaved to Skara's family in order to ensure she wouldn't hurt Skara herself.
  • Cathartic Scream: Amity takes her to Scream Out Point in order to let her indulge in this, so she can vent after the last few frustrating, emotionally charged days.
  • Children Forced to Kill: Downplayed because she's a teenager, but the climax of the Blight Ball has Luz being forced to shoot Amity in the bile sac in a desperate attempt to kill Amirani for good. While hesitant, she eventually takes the shot, ending Amirani's reign of terror and leaving Amity at death's door until Persephone interferes.
  • Compensating for Something: Non-phallic, Played for Drama example. Her bad relationship with the twins, Emira in particular, and taking Amity's words for it appear to be her compensating for failing to stop her from getting kidnapped by Amirani.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: While she does get Willow like Skara asked, Luz's first idea is to try stop the mandragora holding Amity hostage herself, before she's stopped by Boscha.
  • Cute Indignant Girl Stance: She takes on this pose after Emira ends up enraging her with her Buffy Speak.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Luz always keeps a few glyphs on her person wherever she goes, which helps when Amirani threatens Amity during dinner at the Urodela Mansion.
    • She somehow brought a magigun with her to the trip to the Elemental Isles, which comes in handy when Salamanders attack the group.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Naïve Newcomer. Luz is fairly new to both romance and the Boscha-Skara-Amity situation, with even Luz herself saying she's a newcomer on the former. Unfortunately, this not only means she's not entirely on the same page as Amity, who Thinks Like a Romance Novel and carries the relationship, but she's also way out of her depth in trying to deal with the Amity-Boscha-Skara problem, with her attempt to try get Amity and Skara to become friends doing more harm than good in the long run.
  • Death Glare: Anger her enough, and she will stare daggers straight into your soul. Just ask Viney or the Blight parents.
  • Defiant Captive: Despite being captured and being faced by Emperor Belos and Azura, Luz doesn't tell them what they want to hear once, holding a Tranquil Fury all the while.
  • Demoted to Extra: She was the POV character of the original series, but since that spot's been taken up by Boscha, she's relegated to a romantic subplot with Luz.
  • Defensive "What?": Says this after King calls the girls accompanying the Golden Guard "groupies".
  • Didn't See That Coming: She honestly though her scheme in Chapter 14 would work to an extent, to the point she's caught off-guard in their ensuing, brutal fight.
    • It's safe to say Amirani cheating death by possessing Amity was also something that caught her completely off-guard.
  • Didn't Think This Through: As it turns out, she decided to study every single track in Hexside without even thinking that she might have to do all of their exams as well.
    • Her Zany Scheme in Chapter 14 depends on Amity and Skara being willing to talk things out when left alone. The same Amity and Skara who, until that point, had been a Jerkass to One to each other. Yeah, it wasn't one of Luz's best ideas.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: What does she do when Azura has her kidnapped and tortured to reveal the location of the portal door key? She refuses to tell her anything, even after the torture.
  • Dreadful Musician: Her exam for the Bard track has her play her instrument horribly. However, she gets a passing since the Bat Queen was dancing to it.
  • Due to the Dead: When Mattholomule dies after the events of the Azada Car saga, she decides to take the chance to hold a funeral for him, giving the others a chance to see a human ceremony as well. She's initially worried, to the point Amity argues she doesn't have to do this if she's not comfortable, but Luz retorts that it's the least she can do after Mattholomule helped her work up the courage to reveal the true reason how she and Amity's relationship started to the latter.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Luz willingly takes a lot of Amity's badmouthing of Boscha in silence, since she knows they don't like each other, but when she does the same to try get a reaction out of her mourning ex-boyfriend, that's when Luz decides to step in.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: Luz retains her canon status as an All-Loving Heroine here, being willing to not only give Skara a chance despite her reputation, but extending that to Boscha despite how much everyone hates her. Even so, The Reveal regarding how Odalia forced Alador to rape Persephone, Skara's mother, and his passivity and silence about the incident for the next decade and a half leaves her feeling nothing but contempt for the Blight parents, especially Odalia.
  • Exhausted Eyebags: Gains these in Chapter 4 after an all-night study session with Amity.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Once Azura implies she did something to her mother, Luz drops the Tranquil Fury in favor of flailing around, demanding answers.
  • Famed In-Story: Chapter 4 takes place a week after Chapter 3, where the events of the season one finale have taken place. So it comes as no surprise that she's gained quite the reputation because of it.
  • Forgetful Jones: Played for Drama. After the whole Blight Ball fiasco, Luz forgot a very important thing to tell Willow, this being that Boscha is not only stuck in an interdimensional train, but that she's theoretically dead. The fact she only finds this out after splitting off from her and Edric to follow King's instinct only worsens her concerns.
  • Flexing Those Non-Biceps: Does this while talking with Skara about strength during Chapter 4.
  • Foot Popping: Does this in Chapter 44 when she and Amity kiss at Scream Out Point, which gives them a good laugh since they both believed Amity would do it first.
  • Forced Transformation: Azura uses Prometheus' mask in order to turn her into a Witch who's subservient to her, and this is before she's Made a Slave to seal the deal.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Her Zany Scheme in Chapter 14, which was meant to help Amity and Skara make amends, instead leads to their relationship shattering completely due to Amity's fury and Skara's insensitivity, and Skara leaving the Boiling Isles.
  • Go Through Me: She stops Emira from heading deeper into the hidden place at the local library, despite Edric and Gus going ahead, in order to stop her from getting everybody in trouble.
  • Graceful Loser: Granted, most of Luz's team are graceful in their defeat, but Luz is the only one to vocally tell Boscha she had fun in the game, even happily telling her she learned a new glyph thanks to her.
  • Gangsta Style: She holds her magigun this way while shooting at one of the Salamanders.
  • Handshake Substitute: Luz does a fist bump with Viney after she, Amity, and Skara arrive at Hexside during "Nothing is the Same."
  • Humble Hero: Despite having the canon achievement of chipping Emperor Belos' mask, and gaining more and more impressive feats as the story goes on, Luz remains a kind and humble girl through.
  • It's All My Fault: She begins blaming herself when Skara's about to leave the Boiling Isles thanks to one of her schemes. Skara quickly shuts her up.
  • Implausible Deniability: She keeps saying her Zany Scheme is working just fine even as Amity and Skara are taken to the principal's office. It takes them literally beating the crap out of each other for Luz to face reality.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While walking with the Blight twins to school, Luz accidentally insults Emira when she says her Odalia voice is spot-on. She gets a slap for her trouble.
  • Innocence Lost: Luz entered the story in much the same way as canon: cheerful and bubbly, if a bit impulsive. Cue several an Awful Truth being thrown at her ( what the Blights did to Skara's mother, Azura turning out to be real, the fact Boscha's dead in another world) and even her Zany Scheme resulting in Amity losing the respect people had for her and Skara leaving the Boiling Isles for the Underworld), and you can see why she Took a Level in Cynic.
  • Internal Reveal: Thanks to Boscha's letter, Luz discovers that Amity's got a crush on her.
    • On a more grim note, she eventually discovers Boscha's died and her soul has been split into humanoid entities to try help her grow into a better person.
  • Karmic Jackpot: While she obviously didn't approve of Boscha's bullying attitude, she's pretty much the only other student besides Skara who acted civil towards her. Even after she gets Trainnapped and she doesn't need to keep acting like this, Luz not only continues to be decent with Boscha, but actually defend her at one point. Amity argues that, since the Salamanders appear to be related to Boscha somehow, that this display of kindness convinced them to calm down and listen to her alongside Skara.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Narrowly Averted. To defeat Amirani once and for all, Amity has Luz shoot her chest, destroying her sac of bile and thus the one thing keeping Amirani alive. The resulting wound puts her at death's door until Persephone interferes.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: She's the one who pulls the literal and metaphorical trigger on Amirani, shooting Amity's bile sac, and thus the last thing keeping her around. Given the nasty piece of work she was and how Amity got placed on death's door due to this, there's nary a hint of sympathy for Amirani.
  • Legacy Character: Becomes the second Golden Guard when Azura brainwashes her into serving her.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: She pulls out all the stops when Amirani turns into a giant monster after blowing up the Blight Mansion.
  • Logical Weakness: Luz is pretty adept with glyphs, but she still needs to manually activate them. She almost manages to use a glyph against Amirani, but isn't fast enough to use it before the woman uses Amity herself as leverage in order to get the human girl to stay put.
  • Mage Marksman: She uses her glyphs in tandem with the magigun Eda handed her during the fight against Amirani at the Blight Ball.
  • Mercury's Wings: She uses a glyph to give her boots bat wings twice; first to fly out of Amity's room after revealing her Zany Scheme, and then to dodge the attacks from Emira's construct.
  • More Dakka: Her idea to fight the Salamanders is to unload lead into them. It doesn't take long before the cooldown activates.
  • Moment of Weakness: She eventually gets so angry at Emira due to her attitude, and the reveal of Azura being real, that she not only fights her, but spits at her that at least she tried to help Amity, while she and Edric did nothing to help her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Has a moment like this once she sees what her Zany Scheme has lead to during Chapter 14.
  • Naïve Newcomer: She calls herself a novice at romanticism and romantic stuff in general, which is why she lets Amity take the dominant role in the relationship (besides the fact that she told her to).
  • Nerves of Steel: If there's one thing Luz does, is an unbeatable wit. Not only does she nearly strike Amirani with an ice glyph without hesitation, when Amirani turns into a giant monster during the Blight Ball, she quickly, with Skara's help, blows up her chest to reveal her weakpoint, just in time for Amity to deal the finishing blow.
    • Act 3 puts this trope beyond a shadow of a doubt when she is confronted by Azura herself and then tortured to reveal the location of the portal door key, but not once does she budge.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Her Zany Scheme in Chapter 14 was only meant to help Amity and Skara become feiends. That was it. Instead, what happens? Amity reveals her Pseudo-Abomination form and has her reputation take a nosedive, and Skara quits the Boiling Isles after being used as a chew toy one too many times.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: She almost saves Amity from the Mandragora before Boscha stops her.
  • Nerves of Steel: Whether it's calling out the Blight parents for their crap or facing off against Amirani while she's a giant abomination monster, Luz doesn't back down whatsoever.
  • Oh, Crap!: Gets a moment like this when she realizes, after asking Amity and Skara, that Willow is Locked Out of the Loop regarding Boscha being dead in an interdimensional train.
  • Oblivious to Love: Was this to such an extent that Boscha had to step in and give her the facts straight to her face in a letter. It's eventually revealed this is because she had so many other things to worry about back then (Eda's curse, being stuck in another world, and so on) that she didn't have time to assume Amity had a crush on her.
  • The Only One I Trust: Downplayed when it comes to why Boscha sent her the letter at the start; while she did put her trust in Luz to become girlfriends with Amity, it was mostly because she thought that if anybody could get the girl out of her love-induced stupor, it was her.
  • The Pollyanna: This is Luz we're talking about, after all. There's very few things in the story that take away her smile, which makes it that much more shocking when she gets serious.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: Downplayed, but she'ss left blushing and gasping after Skara kisses her right before she leaves for the Boiling Underworld.
  • The Power of Love: Her genuine love for Amity allows her to briefly overcome Azura's control to shoot herself, destroying Prometheus' mask in the process.
  • Precision F-Strike: Yells "Damn you, Amirani!" moments before she shoots Amitani.
  • Quirky Girl, Quirky Tux: For the Blight Ball, she decides to wear a blue tuxedo with a matching bowtie.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As the glyphology teacher for the class at the Owl House, she's fair to her students, and doesn't let her relationship with Amity stop her from deducting points for not following instructions.
  • Reckless Gun Usage: She's quick to use a magigun, essentially a gun empowered by magic, during the climax of the Cupid Bee Car saga.
  • Refuge in Audacity: She throws an icicle right at Amirani's eye to save Amity.
  • Relationship Upgrade: With Amity, thanks to Boscha's intervention.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: She uses several explosion glyphs against Emira at point blank range, sending her flying out of her construct before it dissipates. And then she uses even more of them to expose Amirani's weakness when she's in her monster form.
  • Secret-Keeper: Defied. After her Internal Reveal regarding Boscha's situation, she's the only person in the Boiling Isles to know what's up with her. Come The Cupid Bee Car saga, and her reunion with both Skara and Amity, and she wastes no time letting them in on the secret, believing it wouldn't be fair to keep what she knows to herself.
  • Skewed Priorities: Despite believing both twins are up to no good and Edric having gone ahead just a few minutes ago, Luz decides to stand in Emira's way and stop her from going any deeper.
  • Shoot the Dog: Amity practically begs Luz to shoot her as the battle at the Blight Ball reaches its zenith, since destroying her bile sac would destroy the last link keeping Amirani alive, and thus free her and kill the psycho for good. Despite some clear hesitation, Luz eventually pulls the trigger, ending Amirani's rampage once and for all.
  • Shoot the Television: [[spoilers: Shoots the makeshift TV set created by Bo once she can't bear listening to Azura's message any longer. Unfortunately, Azura had already said everything she wanted to say by then, and Skara heard it too...]]
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Defied. Luz outright states she doesn't go with this trope when Amity points out she's her girlfriend after Luz deducts points for replicating Boscha's Firebolt.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Luz goes from throwing an ice glyph to Amirani in order to escape, to working alongside Skara to blow a hole in her chest when she becomes a giant monster in the climax of the Blight Ball.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: When the story starts, Luz is her usual canon self: bubbly and cheerful and all that. As things keep getting worse and worse, however, so does her mood, and when the Chapter 14 fiasco is over and done with, and the Blight twins join the Owl House, the Luz we once knew now has an edge of pessimism around her.
  • The Tooth Hurts: She breaks her teeth when she bites an apple that turns out to be a paperweight. Luckily, Skara is quick to heal her when she uses a Bard/Healing poglypherization.
  • Tranquil Fury: She's clearly pissed beyond belief when Amirani kidnaps Amity and implies it's because of something the Blight parents did, but she doesn't raise her voice when demanding an explanation.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her Zany Scheme in Chapter 14 leads to not only Amity suffering a Glamour Failure and revealing everybody how brutal she can be, causing her reputation to take a nosedive, but Skara winds up so traumatized by the ordeal and gets so sick of the Isles' crap that she leaves it for the Boiling Underworld.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She doesn't sugarcoat her disapproval of Amity's quest to make it clear how much she hates Boscha.
  • Worthy Opponent: After throwing an icicle at her eye Amirani admits that Luz's got some guts. Unfortunately, she gets so pissed off that she's ready to tear them off.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: She concocts a Zany Scheme in order to try get Amity and Skara to become friends, believing that if they were to be left alone, they'd manage to sort things out themselves. In any other story, this might've been the case, but here, it practically leads to disaster.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Both on the giving and receiving end.
    • On the receiving end, when Skara's about to leave for the Boiling Underworld, Luz stops her to tell how everything happened because of her scheme and how she's at fault for how things went down. Skara's quick to shut her up, however, and tell her that she's not entirely to blame, and that she at least had good intentions.
    • On the giving end, shortly after that, Luz helps Amity build some confidence by telling her that the best thing she can do now is become a better person, all while stating how she's gonna help her with that.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: This is her reaction when Amirani not only survives having her monster body blown up, but somehow merge with Amity.
  • Zany Scheme: One of these sets off the events of Chapter 14. Which means it, naturally, goes terribly wrong.

    Amity Blight
See her page here.

    Skara Brae
See her page here.

    Willow Park
A Plant track student at Hexside who is friends with Luz.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: She manages to concentrate her magic during the climax of the Blight Ball, not only gaining Glowing Eyes, but being able to trap and beat up Amitani for a short while.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 6 is focused on her training to try make up for doing nothing against the Mandragora at the start of the story.
    • "The Origin Story Car" saga is also partlt focused on her and her origins.
  • Action Girl: She quickly joins the fray against Amitani in the Blight Ball, and despite being clearly outmatched, she manages to hold her own until she gets impaled.
  • Accidental Murder: Back when she was younger, and still living in the Elemental Isles, Willow tried to not have anybody touch the flower on her hair as it was the last thing she had to remember Boscha by. When one of her classmates got a little too stubborn, she pushed him straight into a barrage of vines, skewering him.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Her relationship with Boscha is already pretty bad in canon, but it's even worse here, since they used to be friends when they were younger.
    • She gets worse when The Origin Story Car reveals she and Boscha used to know each other back when she still lived at the Elemental Isles, only for them to get separated when they were getting along. The only thing she had to remember her by was a flower on her head, and when one of her classmates stubbornly tried to grab it, she lost control and killed him.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In canon, Willow and Boscha have always disliked each other. In here, they at least got off a good first impression when they were kids, and were probably friendly with one another before the whole Amity fiasco happened.
    • Willow and Skara are strangers in canon. In here, they get along relatively well, and even met when they were younger, with Willow gifting Skara her flute.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: After Skara brings it up, she bluntly asks Amity what happened between her and Boscha in their youth. Amity can only yell at Willow to Get Out! in response.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Which she lampshades as she asks Skara what's a Dire Mandragora.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Willow's still as nice as ever, and just as dangerous, too. Case in point, she manages to stall Amirani long enough that the adults can kill Prometheus, weakening Amirani enough to let Luz deliver the killing blood.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: When she was younger, she blew one at one of her classmates while hanging out with Boscha.
  • Brutal Honesty: She doesn't mince words when she tells Amity she practically broke Skara physically and mentally with her Breaking Speech.
  • Blind Without 'Em: She desperately tries to get her glasses back after Amitani slaps them off, but fails to find them before Amitani snatches them and crushes them.
  • Combination Attack: She draws a circle with Edric to summon illusionary vines to restrain the Salamanders attacking Luz's group.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: She was never going to defeat Amitani outright, but not only does she manage to control her powers, and get some good hits in, but she buys the adult group enough time to kill Prometheus, which causes Amirani to destabilize and give Amity and Luz a shot at getting rid of her forever.
  • Dramatic Drop: She nearly drops the bouquet she made for the Human Appreciation Society when she hears Mattholomule was dating Boscha.
  • David vs. Goliath: She eventually has to fight the Amity-Amirani fusion during the climax of the Blight Ball, with Willow, despite her talent in Plant magic, being the David.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: She tears out the Dire Mandragora's heart and kills it, saving Skara's life in the process.
    • She does this again by being the first one to strike Amitani when she gets formed, though unfortunately, this also makes her the prime target for her rage.
  • Elemental Punch: A variation; she can summon giant plant fists as of the Blight Ball.
  • Fainting: When she was younger, she fainted after accidentally killing one of her classmates.
  • Former Friend of Alpha Bitch: No, it's not Amity this time, though it still applies, but Boscha, who she used to get along with before the whole tea party fiasco happened.
  • Glowing Eyes: Has these as in canon, but after getting a pep talk from Boa, the glow goes from covering her eyes, to only her pupils.
  • Green Thumb: Has a name based off the Willow tree and her magic specialty is based on plants.
  • Heroic Second Wind: After she gets some encouraging words from Boa, and thus Boscha, Willow manages to concentrate her power long enough to not only restrain Amitani, but beat her up until she stabs her.
  • I Am a Monster: Comes to believe this after learning how she killed one of her classmates when they wouldn't stop trying to get a hold of the flower on her hair. Edric, however, has something else to say.
  • Ignored Expert: She and Gus both try to stop Luz from pulling a Zany Scheme to get Amity and Skara to become friends, and between the two, she's the one who knows more about the broken relationship of Amity and Skara. Unfortunately, Luz doesn't listen...
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: How Amitani stops her from outright beating her: she waits for a window of opportunity and then stabs her with a hand-turned-sword.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: As Luz points out to her horror, Willow's the only one in their group who doesn't know about Boscha's current situation.
  • Ma'am Shock: Is caught off-guard when Edric calls her "ma'am" while they're on the way to the village where Willow's mother resides.
  • Mundane Utility: As shown in the past, she can use her Plant magic to summon a vine to use as a rope to play with.
  • Power Incontinence: When she gets too riled up, her powers go out of control and she summons vines from the ground, as she does when Luz and the Blight twins tell her about the Blight Ball.
  • Strong, but Unskilled: Willow has a strong affinity for Plant magic, but her actual control of it leaves a lot to be desired. This gets her on trouble against Amirani, who not only is possessing Amity's body, but is Strong and Skilled when it comes to her own abilities.
  • Security Cling: She jumps right into Edric's arms after her mother nearly hits her with some thorny vines.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: If her glasses start to shine, run.
  • Tell Me About My Father: Mother variant; a talk with her parents regarding the potential "loosely based on a true story" nature of the Azura books eventually leads her to want to know more about her mother. Her fathers, however, decide it's better to leave things there, as said woman is a... Complicated matter. This doesn't stop Willow from joining Luz's group when they head for the Elemental Isles.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Goes from standing in fear against the Mandragora at the start, to ripping out a Dire Mandragora's heart and even get a couple of hits in against Amirani.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: If somebody attacks Willow, her first instinct will always be to send vines after them. This ends up striking a nerve with Amitani, who finds it disappointing she'd be so predictable.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Beyond what's canon with Amity, she and Boscha also had a decent first impression and were friendly with one another before Odalia entered the picture.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Tells this to Gus when he begins to wonder if he should come to the Blight Ball, since Edric and Emira are gonna go there. Willow's quick to tell Gus that he really is needed, and he's eventually convinced to go.
    • She, in turn, gets told this by Boa, who not only goes to say she's stronger than everyone gives her credit for, but that Boscha sees her as an Apex, which is no small feat. This is enough to give her a Heroic Second Wind, turning her Curb-Stomp Battle against Amitani into a Curb Stomp Cushion.

    Gus Porter
A Illusion track student at Hexside who is friends with Luz and current president of the Human Appreciation Society.
  • Badass Adorable: A young boy (age 12, not counting for the "Witch puberty" he got in season 2) who managed to knock out Skara with an explosive illusion.
  • Blue Is Heroic: He wears the blue associated with the Illusion track.
  • Closest Thing We Got: Mattholomuele chose him to help with the hexorcism since he didn't want to anger Eda over asking to use the Blight Twins.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He and Mattholomule work together during the Azada Car arc to stop Daiki.
  • Demoted to Extra: Gus is still around, but he is not particularly involved in the Boscha-Skara-Amity drama. He explains that after the incident at the end of the Season 1 finale, his dad is mostly keeping him at home for his own safety. He starts getting a bigger role in Act 2, and later joins Mattholomeule in the exorcism of the Sakuragi Institute.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Has apparently become this following the events of the season one finale, though it's only mentioned in passing.
  • Master of Illusion: He's on the Illusion track and is a prodigy of it. His illusions are good enough to fool a bunch of youkai.
  • On Three: He tries to use this trope during the Blight Ball, but Willow doesn't quite get the memo...
  • A Rare Sentence: States this once he and Mattholomule leave the Boiling Isles for the Pokémon world:
"I just drove in the back of some eldritch monster [Giratina] to another dimension to help exorcise a spirit…"
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: He begins doubting himself when he assumes, correctly, that Edric and Emira are gonna go to the Blight Ball. Willow's quick to tell him otherwise.

    Principal Hieronymus Bump
The principal of Hexside, whose decision to suspend Boscha kickstarts the story.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Easily destroys the Mandragora in the first chapter without even trying.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While he's let Boscha get away with many things, endangering his students is something he cannot condone.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Him suspending Boscha for her Mandragora prank is what brings about the events that has the Train pick Boscha up.
  • Spanner in the Works: He shows up out of nowhere to completely derail Boscha's plans.

    Mattholomule Vitruvius
A student in the Construction track, who apparently used to date Boscha before she disappeared.
  • Adaptational Badass: The Azada Car reveals that he's from a long line of hexorcists and he's pretty damn good at it. Oh and he has a whistle that lets him summon Giratina. Unfortunately, he dies just after his first exorcism.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He returned Gus's role as President of the Human Appreciation Society and gives advice to Luz about her relationship with Amity.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Mattholomule and Boscha are strangers in canon, while here, they were allegedly dating before she disappeared.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Relatively mundane, but it's still rather cruel. He gets mangled and brutalized by the Youkai so badly, he bleeds to death during the trip back to the Boiling Isles, barely getting to tell Boa he loves her before succumbing to his wounds.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He gets a prominent role in the Azada Car arc when he's asked to do a hexorcism on the Sakuragi Institute. Unfortunately...
  • A Death in the Limelight: He dies after taking too many wounds from the youkai.
  • Death by Adaptation: He's still around when Season 2 of The Owl House starts. Not so much here...
  • Dying Declaration of Love: He tells Boa that he loves her before he succumbs to his wounds.
  • Hero of Another Story: His family are hexorcists and know about the Pokémon world, not to mention summon Giartina like a loyal hound.
  • Hidden Depths: He's part of a long line of hexorcists as he reveals during the Azada Car arc. Gus lampshades that it's unexpected, interesting and that this would've been nice to know sooner.
  • Killed Off for Real: He dies after being critically wounded from Daiki and the other youkai.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname "Vitruvius" is the author of a book of Roman architecture, fitting someone in the Construction track.
  • Pet the Dog: He fixed Skara's flute after Amity broke it and handed it back to her when she woke up.
  • Person of Mass Construction: He's got to be if he can keep up with the Person of Mass Destruction that is Boscha.
  • Sacrificial Lion: While the deaths of Odalia, Prometheus and Amirani were seen as signs of relief, his death was a sign of shock and horror and signaling an even darker turn for the Boiling Isles.
  • Secret Relationship: It's implied he kept his relationship with Boscha a secret from her fellow Human Appreciation Society members, and for good reason, before Skara blabbered about it.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: His death plays a key role in two parts about the Azada Car: It gives Boa a Traumatic Superpower Awakening of Boa's Salamander traits, and gets Chloe to finally realize she has to cut ties with the Youkais.
  • Wisdom from the Gutter: He's probably the last person you'd expect romantic advice from, but he gives Luz a halfway decent advice on how to break the news to Amity about the true start of their relationship.

    Viney
A student in both the Healing and Beastkeeping tracks, who immediately grabs Skara alongside Jerbo and Barcus and decides to ask for her help.
  • A Girl and Her X: She's often seen with Puddles by her side.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Viney was a chill girl in canon who, even if she got angry at people, didn't stay mad for long. This Viney lets her anger for what Boscha did to Puddles get to her, manipulating Skara into fixing it for her and leading to Skara becoming a half-Griffin monster.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: In canon, Viney is a chill girl who rarely lets her emotions overwhelm here. This Viney is quite temperamental if Puddles gets hurt, and is a bit more emotional and pragmatic.
  • Ascended Extra: In canon, all three of the detention track students had equal screentime, and weren't particularly prominent characters. In this story, she's easily the most prominent of the trio.
  • Berserk Button: Hurt Puddles, and she'll make sure you regret it.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the rewrite, by the request of Luz, she grabs Willow, Gus, and Amity from the fleeing students after Gus knocks out Skara with an exploding illusion.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: Despite Luz presumably asking her to save all three of her friends, Viney only keeps Willow and Gus with her, throwing Amity right back to the rooftop where Skara is, and giving her a Sadistic Choice regarding the truth of Skara's broken flute. And when Amity refuses to admit she did anything wrong, Viney leaves her to her fate.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She's part of the good guys, but she's perfectly willing to leave Amity to the mercy of an angry Skara after she refuses to admit she did anything wrong.
  • Go Through Me: She puts herself between Amelia and Cat, and the griffinified Skara before the former can throw more rocks at her.
  • Grin of Audacity: Flashes one of these to Skara right before asking her to heal Puddles.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Downplayed, since she has a legitimate reason to believe this, but she thought Skara would snitch on her and the detention trio if she was about to be caught with the Healing Potion. The fact Skara kept the secret makes her realize how badly she misjudged her.
  • Jerkass Realization: Once she sees the griffinified Skara and realizes she didn't snitch on them and tried to save her own skin like Boscha would, Viney realizes what a jerk she's been and comes to her aid.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Her griffin, Puddles, was taken for a joy ride by Boscha and got burned as a result, so her real beef is with her. And yet, she decides to make Skara apologize on her behalf by making a potion to heal said burns.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Once she realizes the lengths Skara went to keep the potion safe, she realizes she horribly misjudged her and tries to come to her aid.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: All she wanted was for Skara to make a Healing Potion for Puddles, but in the process, she not only gets detention again, but Skara's transformed into a half-Griffin monster, with Eda making it clear that even if Skara turns back to normal, she'll have to live with the trauma for the rest of her life, alongside any unfortunate side effects.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Her monologue during her Go Through Me moment is one directed to Skara, letting everybody know that she's kind, generous, and a legitimate Nice Girl who just wanted to be seen as anything other than an extension of Boscha. When this gets brought up in Act 2 by Amity, Viney confesses she went a little overboard, as she was trying to keep Skara from going on a killing spree.

    Barcus and Jerbo
Viney's fellow classmates. Jerbo's a tall guy who's in the Plant and Abomination track, while Barcus is a dog-like witch who's in the Potion and Oracle track.

Both

Barcus

  • Ambiguous Situation: As the author notes, whether Barcus defending Skara was because he's on the Oracle Track or he just wanted someone sympathetic to her is up to the reader to decide.
  • Heroic Dog: Barcus is the only one of the dual track trio who doesn't seem to have a beef with Skara, and stops Jerbo from throwing a Botanical Abomination at her.

Jerbo

  • Botanical Abomination: Thanks to his dual track uniform, Jerbo can create mixed Abominations by adding some botanical matter to the matter used to create Abominations before creating them. He almost sics one of these against Skara before Barcus stops him.

    Eileen
A cyclops witch who studies in the Potions track. Skara enlists her help in creating a healing potion for Puddles.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Boscha indirectly mentions her while trying to divert attention to her third eye in Chapter 8. Three chapters later, Skara enlists Eileen's help to make a potion for Puddles.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Does this to Gus while Luz reads Skara's letter from the Underworld.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: She only speaks in muffled noises, having no mouth, but everybody can hear her just fine.
  • Nice Girl: Compared to just about every other student that Skara interacts with, Eileen treats her more calmly and nicely, not throwing any shade at her or showing a clear distrust of her thanks to Boscha. She also, while hesitant about it at first, ultimately decides to help Skara make the potion for Puddles.

    Amelia and Cat
A pair of students, in the Plant and Healing track respectively, who used to be part of Boscha's Girl Posse.

Both

  • Forced Transformation: Both disappeared in Chapter 20 after their failed attempt to rescue Skara from the Urodelas; Chapter 45 reveals they were turned into the cat and mandragora familiars Prometheus created to unleash at the Blight Ball
  • Only One Name: Neither of them have a confirmed surname. In Amelia's case, it helps tell her apart from the other Amelia.
  • Too Dumb to Live: It's one thing to throw rocks at the griffinified Skara and not expect her to maul you alive, especially with the bad blood she has with you. It's another thing to insist on doing it while she's not only surrounded by strong people, including the Owl Lady of all witches, but the principal's there to watch it. Really, it's a miracle they got the hint when she and Puddles roared at them.

Amelia

  • The Atoner: She's become quite apologetic over how she treated Skara, and wished to make amends with her.
  • Green and Mean: Amelia's a greenette who wears the Plant tracks' green uniform, and she's quick to throws at the half-griffinified Skara.
  • Green Thumb: Is in the Plant track, and is good enough to catch Willow off-guard.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. She shares her first name with Amelia Hughes.

Cat

  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Cat wears glasses, but they don't help her see clearly that throwing rocks at a monster might not be a good idea.
  • Jerkass: Whether it's throwing rocks at a monster, or beating up Skara, Cat's just unpleasent all around.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: It's heavily muddled by the fact she's clearly just trying to avoid going to the Underworld, but she's not wrong in saying that Amity's more or less the reason Skara reached her limit with the Boiling Isles.

The Owl House

    Eda Clawthorne
The Owl Lady, also known as the most powerful witch of the Boiling Isles.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Comes to the half-griffinified Skara's aid in Chapter 11.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: In Episode 7, she's shown drawing glyphs which brings up how she lost most of her magic at the end of the Season 1 finale.
  • Mama Bear: Don't hurt Luz or Amity under her watch.

    Lilith Clawthorne
Eda's sister.
  • Brutal Honesty: Sugarcoating things isn't really her style.
  • The Cameo: Makes an appearance in Chapter 4, spying on Luz's Bard test with Eda.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Lilith did a lot of bad things in order to stay in the Coven, but even she is absolutely disgusted to what Odalia did to ensure she had power.
  • Hates Being Touched: She apparently didn't like Eda hugging her, but she eventually gave up trying to convince her to stop.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: The fact she's under the Owl House section spoils her Heel–Face Turn at the end of season one. Act 2 brings up how it was Lilith who put her sister under the Owlbeast curse.
  • Mama Bear: Her relationship with Amity is rocky, but given how she is ready to kill Odalia for using mind control magic on her husband to rape Persephone it proves that she truly cares for her apprentice.
  • The Mentor: Used to be this to Amity, and takes the role again once she begins training her Pseudo-Abomination powers.
  • You Are Not As Bad As You Think You Are: When Amity begins falling into self-loathing regarding her role in the fallout of her, Boscha, and Skara's relationship, Lilith quickly debunks her, stating that not only was Amity not the sole reason for the fallout, but that Boscha and Skara are just as guilty for it.

    King
A tiny creature who claims to be the king of demons.
  • Adaptational Comic Relief: While he was comic relief in the original show, he also showed layers of complexity and did more than spit out jokes. In here, he's nothing but a comic relief character.
  • Convenient Coma: He falls into a coma at the climax of the Blight Ball saga and doesn't wake up until the trip to the Elemental Isles.
  • Demoted to Extra: Probably hit with this the worst out of everyone; while Luz and Eda maintain some of their relevance, King is relegated to a comic relief character.

The Blight Family

    Alador and Odalia Blight
Amity's parents who will do anything for power and prestige.

Both of them

  • Adaptational Villainy: The Blights aren't nice people in canon, but the most they did by the time of this writing was force Amity to break off her friendship with Willow, which is horrible, but nowhere near the level of raping the Queen of the Underworld in hopes of using her as a bargaining chip to give the Blights power in the Underworld.
  • Arranged Marriage: They didn't marry because they wanted to, but because it might help the Blights gain power in the Boiling Underworld.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Their marriage was arranged, with Alador being miserable and Odalia not helping by using him as a tool.
  • Hate Sink: Both of them are disgusting witches and the reason why so many things are messed up, but it's Odalia who takes the cake, as every single thing involving Amity, Boscha and Skara can be traced back to this Witch.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Let's put it this way, everything involving the Boscha/Skara/Amity drama is on these two, starting with how they prevented Amity from being friends with Willow that lead to the brutal beatdown on Boscha. But more specifically, Odalia's smart decision to have Persephone be a second wife to Adalor by brainwashing her husband to rape her is the reason so many things are just fucked up to begin with.
  • Walking Spoiler: Long story short, it's their fault, but mostly Odalia's, that everything is messed up.

Odalia Blight

  • Abusive Parents: Let's not beat around the bush, Odalia is a horrible mother in more ways than one.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Odalia doesn't care what she does as long as it means that the Blights have power, and this ambition has caused so much trouble for everyone involved.
  • Asshole Victim: Amirani crushed Odalia in her monster hand when the woman tries to fight her. Given all the horrible things she did beforehand, very few tears were shed.
  • Karmic Death: Dies to the hand of Amirani after she did one good deed to protect Amity.
  • The Unfettered: Odalia doesn't care what moral grounds she crosses to get power, up to and including having her husband rape the queen of the Underworld.

Alador

  • Accomplice by Inaction: Alador was the more innocent one of the duo in regards to what happened to Persephone — as Odalia used Mind Magic on him to rape her — but given that he never revealed this at all or spoke up about it sooner makes him just as vile as his wife.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Alador refused to have sex with an unwilling Persephone; too bad Odalia forced him to...
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Played with. He was the more innocent one between him and his wife, but Skara points out that he's just as bad as Odalia for keeping everything secret for years.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Alador slapped his wife upon hearing the idea of knocking Persephone up when she was tied up.

    Edric and Emira Blight
Amity's older siblings.

Both

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In canon, they mostly interact with Luz and Amity. In here, they end up befriending Gus and Willow as well, and in Emira's case, she was also pining for Mattholomule at one point.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Edric is shown to be nicer, if a little oblivious, while Emira is quite the jerkass which Edric himself lampshades.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Both of them are horrified to learn what their mother's actions have caused, leaving their house to head to see Eda.
    • Edric himself states that he won't try to date someone who is at a low point to Jerbo.
    • Both twins are utterly horrified while watching Azura's DVD at the temple of the Elemental Isles.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Despite what their personalities might make you believe, Edric is the responsible sibling, focusing on finding a way to help Amity, and Emira is the foolish sibling, letting her own pettiness and Luz's anger get up to her.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Outside of their friendship with Luz, they also becomes friends with the rest of her team: Willow for Edric, Gus for Emira.
  • Master of Illusion: They're on the Illusion track in Hexside, and if Gus' comments are anything to go by, they're at least stronger than Gus, who's no slouch in the department either.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: While Emira is more proactive about it than Edric, upon learning of their mother's depraved actions, they book it and decide to stay in the Owl House for the time being.
  • Smart Jerk and Nice Moron: Downplayed, as while they both seem to be mostly the same smarts-wise, Edric is the more oblivious of the two, while also being the nicer one. Emira even lampshades this when Edric has a Dumbass Has a Point moment regarding the Azura books.
  • The Unfavorite: Odalia barely notices them when they appear at the Blight Ball, and when she does, she doesn't hide the fact that she's more interested in getting Amity back than them.

Emira

  • Abhorrent Admirer: She was apparently pining after Mattholomule for a while, a fact that the Construction track student finds annoying.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: She was a troublemaker in canon, but generally carried herself with a friendly attitude. In here, she's not only quicker to anger, but also much more rude and confrontational than Edric.
  • Buffy Speak: After Luz clarifies she was trying to compliment Emira with her "spot on Odalia impression" comment, Emira tells her to make the compliment more "complimenty" next time.
  • Has a Type: Younger men, apparently.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Slapping Luz wasn't nice, and Emira acting like a jerkass afterwards didn't help, but you can't help but agree to an extent when Luz practically says she makes a good Odalia impression. You know, the same woman who brainwashed her husband raping someone?
  • More Deadly Than the Male: While we don't see Edric fight, it's quite likely that he can't do the stuff that Emira can, like creating a giant version of herself to attack Luz with.

Edric

Other

    Mandragora
A nameless Mandragora Boscha kills then revives as part of a Secret Test of Character.

    The Bat Queen
A giant Palisman who serves as part of the Bard track exam.
  • Another Dimension: Apparently, being eaten by her during the exam sends you to one, where a smaller version of herself lectures you on what you did wrong.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: The fact the description says she's a Palisman.

    Warden Wrath
The warden of the Conformatorium. Also Skara's father.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He's a lot less hostile towards Luz and her friends in this story, probably because they also are Skara's friends.
  • Bouncer: He acts as this for the Blight Ball, not that it stops him from letting Luz and the twins inside.
  • Family Relationship Switcheroo: We're initially lead to believe he's Skara father, now matter how crazy that sounds. Eventually, it's revealed he's actually her adoptive father, her biological father being Alador Blight.
  • Good Parents: Upon learning how Skara is going to the Boiling Underworld to grow stronger and catch a break from the Isles' abuse, he doesn't stop her, but instead gives her the Palisman she received from the Bat Queen and tells her that he's proud of his daughter. Then again, he also knows the truth about Skara's family situation, so that probably has something to do with it.
  • Mr. Exposition: He helps explains the background of the Boiling Underworld and Prometheus.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When he sees Eda at his doorstep, he's ready to bring up a romantic gesture...until Eda shows the ransom letter from Amity by Prometheus and he immediately brings them into explain what's going on.
  • Parental Substitute: The Family Relationship Switcheroo above reworks him as this, since Persephone allowed him to adopt Skara in order to take her out of the Underworld and check the Isles, where she could grow stronger without risk of premature death.
  • The Promise: To ensure Persephone would be okay with Skara being taken out of the Boiling Underworld and to the Isles, Wrath promised her that not only would he keep Skara safe, but that he'd do his damnest to not reveal her connection to Persephone to anyone.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He not only treats Luz and co. far better than he did in canon, but he actually helps them on occasion.
  • Retired Badass: He used to be the Boiling Gnome, basically one of the Elite Four of the Boiling Underworld, before moving to the Boiling Isles.
  • Related in the Adaptation: He's Skara's father in this story. And yes, Luz is just as confused about that part as you probably are. Turns out that Skara's adopted.
  • Secret-Keeper: Made a promise to Persephone to never reveal who Skara really is, nor her connection to her.

    Inner Amity (Unmarked Spoilers
The physical manifestation of Amity's mental state, whose role is to keep it intact. At least, that's what she did before Odalia got involved...
  • The Corruption: Odalia's Mind Manipulation was so thorough that Inner Amity became corrupted into a younger Odalia, even down to using Oracle magic rather than Abomination magic.

Boiling Underworld (Unmarked Spoilers!)

    Prometheus Urodela
Boscha's father and the ruler of the Boiling Underworld.
  • Abusive Parents: Would force his daughter to drink various poisons that could hurt her and not even care about her well-being.
  • Affably Evil: He's calm, collected and polite around Luz and Amity. Eda even mentions that he's pretty cool. However, he also happens to be the ruler of the Eldritch Location known as the Boiling Underworld, so that tells you he's not to be messed with.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: He tried to give one to Odalia the fateful day the Blights went nearly extinct, giving her the choice to either become Persephone's servant, or pay the consequences. When Odalia refuses, Prometheus isn't even shocked, having already deduced diplomacy would be a waste of time with her, and having already prepared to execute the Family Extermination of the Blights.
  • Asshole Victim: Persephone decapitates him after the Clawthorne sisters shoot him in the chest, removing his ability to use magic. And if any tears were shed at this moment, they were of joy.
  • Bait the Dog: While definitely dangerous, he initially doesn't seem to be as bad as his wife, since he has a civil nature when we first see him, and even Eda speaks of him favorably. Then Chapter 22 reveals he committed genocide against the Blights while forcing Alador and Odalia to watch, and then kidnaps Amity alongside his wife to take her to meet Persephone and Skara.
  • Cool Mask: Is always seen wearing a mask. And for good reason; he's actually a human, but as long as he wears the mask, he can cast magic like a wizard.
  • Cruel Mercy: Instead of killing Alador and Odalia themselves, he trapped them inside their home and forced them to watch as his creations slaughtered Odalia's family right outside their house.
  • Dissonant Serenity: He never panics. Not when he sees Skara and Amity again, not when he sees his queen after being raped, and certainly not when he commits genocide against the Blights.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: He commits genocide against the Blights while forcing Odalia to watch, which would normally be a horrible thing if it wasn't for the fact that Odalia practically had this coming as soon as she decided to have her husband rape Persephone.
  • Labcoat of Science: Wears one of these during Chapter 22's flashback, specifically when Persephone returned from being defiled by Odalia and Alador.
  • Lack of Empathy: In one flashback in the Campfire Car, after he gives Boscha a potion that makes her feel like she's melting, all he does is note that the potion is too strong.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Wears a mask and is known to be the ruler of the Boiling Underworld which is more corrupt than the Isles above.
  • Meaningful Name: Named after the mythological Prometheus who stole fire from the gods to give to humans.
  • Mysterious Past: Unlike his wife, who we know went to school with Odalia and Alador and was a bodyguard to Persephone, we have no idea what Prometheus' past is.
  • Off with His Head!: Persephone decapitates him for all the evil he did.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: For raping Persephone, Prometheus murdered all of the Blight family except the parents and the twins in exchange.
  • Sore Loser: Eda claims he's this. And indeed, he throws quite the hissy fit when his Abominations are defeated.

    Amirani Urodela
Boscha's mother. She and Odalia appear to have a history together.
  • Abusive Parents: She's the one who tortured Boscha into becoming the Apex she is today, mostly by starving her if she didn't kill and eat what she was given, and by drilling the dog-eats-dog mentality of the world into her.
  • Ax-Crazy: Her introduction makes it rather clear where Boscha got it from; she can't even stay near Amity for two seconds before trying to kill her with an axe. Hell, Prometheus himself admits that he has trouble controlling her.
    • The Blight Ball makes this clear without a shadow of a doubt: not only does she threaten the ballgoers by blowing herself up, but she then transforms into a giant monster and then merges with Amity in order to make it impossible to kill her without killing the Blight, too.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Turns into a giant Abomination monster after blowing herself up and reforming.
  • Asshole Victim: She gets destroyed when Prometheus is killed and Amity's sac of bile, her last link to the living world, is destroyed. Given what a lunatic she was, it's very well deserved.
  • Bearer of Bad News: She's the one who tells the Blights, Luz, and Skara that Boscha's gone missing.
  • Duels Decide Everything: The reason the Blights came for lunch? Amirani challenged Odalia to a duel with that being her prize if she won, and she did.
  • Evil Matriarch: She's Boscha's mother, and is all but stated to be most of the reason why she's so messed up in the first place.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Unlike her husband, Amirani's jovial attitude is nothing more than a front to hide the demented psychopath she really is.
  • Feels No Pain: Either that, or she has a very high pain threshhold, since she doesn't react when ripping off one of her fingers.
  • Fingore: She rips off one of her fingers so Amity will imitate it, only to regenerate it after proving her point.
  • Hidden Depths: As Chapter 21's prologue shows, she was apparently part of the Oracle track back when she studied at Hexside.
  • Human Resources: The Abomination pudding Amity ate? It was made from her, meaning that she can control Amity whenever she wants.
  • Insult Backfire: Back when she studied at Hexside, she insulted Odalia by claiming Alador looked happier with Persephone than with her. Not only was Odalia not as offended as expected, but it's all but stated that this gave Odalia to try make Persephone Alador's second wife, which lead to complications...
  • Insane Equals Violent: She's completely bonkers, and is also quite violent to boot. Which is kind of a given seeing how insane her daughter is.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Non-romantic example. The flashback to the tea party had Amirani actually amazed at whoever violently attacked her daughter.
  • Killed Off for Real: She was already dead and was using Life Magic by Prometheus to stay alive. When he dies, she fuses with Amity in order to continue living but then Luz strikes Amity's magic bile sac, ending her for good.
  • Lethal Chef: Zigzagged; the food she "cooks" for the guests are actually organs of those who died in the Underworld. However, the food itself doesn't actually taste that bad, it just looks utterly terrifying. She also did make rice and fried chicken for Luz and an "Abomination Pudding" for Amity.
  • Mama Bear: Loves her Boscha very much and is willing to attack Amity whom she believes is the cause of her daughter running away. Then again she also did torture said daughter into the Apex she is today.
  • Meaningful Name: She's named after a Georgian mythical hero whose tale mirrors that of Prometheus.
  • Mask of Sanity: Back when she was younger, Amirani was capable of acting somewhat civil and keep her darker urges under control, only flashing a Slasher Smile once Persephone gave her the order to wipe out the Blights. By the present day, however, the mask is all but gone.
  • Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid: All but stated to be a Pseudo-Abomination, which gets confirmed near the end of Chapter 20.
  • Out-Gambitted: She merged with Amity in order to make it impossible to kill her, since doing so would kill Amity too. Unfortunately, not only did she not expect Prometheus to die as well, but Amity them realizes what's going on and has Luz destroy has bile sac, erasing the last anchor Amirani had to the living realm and destroying her once and for all.
  • Partial Transformation: She can turn parts of her body into different things, like an axe.
  • Perpetual Smiler: In the present day, she mostly holds a smile on her face, and it's alwaysa Slasher Smile.
  • Pet the Dog: One of Boscha's only good memories with her involves showing a sweet young Boscha the powers of someone in the Oracle track.
  • Retired Badass: She used to work as the Boiling Salamander, a member of the Underworld's Elite Four, before something happened that forced her to quit.
  • Sadist: She shows disturbing joy in forcing Amity to do some self-Fingore, and in general, she appears to be having the time of her life breaking her apart.
  • Slasher Smile: Practically her default smile, and given that she's always smiling...
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: If she didn't mock Odalia over how Alador was in love with Persephone, Odalia would never have gotten the plan to have her husband rape her and set off the Disaster Dominoes involving Amity, Skara and Boscha. Should've kept your mouth shut there...
  • Would Hurt a Child: She has no problem threatening Amity and Luz, alongside the Blights, during lunch at her house.

    Persephone Brae
A woman from the Boiling Underworld, who also happens to be its true ruler and Skara's mother.
  • An Ice Person: Has some control over ice magic, which she uses to protect the Blight twins when Amirani gets ready to blow herself up, and the Blight Mansion with herself.
  • Action Mom: She's quick to join the fight against Amirani and Prometheus, and even becomes instrumental in defeating Azura.
  • Abdicate the Throne: She was left so thoroughly traumatized by what the Blights did to her that she had no choice but to step down as ruler of the Underworld, a position Prometheus eventually took up.
  • All for Nothing: She allowed Warden Wrath to adopt Skara in order to give her a better life, and even went so far as to use Mind Magic so Skara could start anew. Instead, not only does Skara become such a pariah that she decides to quit the Isles and return to the Underworld just for a break, but she does so after having an icicle lodged through her head by a Blight, the exact same thing Persephone wanted to avoid.
  • Baby Factory: Odalia manipulated events so Persephone would conceive a child with Alador, in order to gain connections to the Underworld. Said child turned out to be Skara.
  • Barrier Warrior: Summons a barrier of ice to protect herself and the Blight twins before Amirani blows herself up.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: Implied. As a witch, she can cast magic in general, and she appears to be more stable than the lunatics that Prometheus and Amirani are.
  • Bound and Gagged: Alongside being Chained to a Bed, Persephone had her mouth covered with duct tape and her hands tied with magic to prevent her from fighting back as Odalia sicced Alador on her.
  • Chained to a Bed: Odalia did this to her in order to let Alador have his way with her.
  • Crush Blush: When she interacts with Alador in Chapter 21's prologue.
  • Death Glare: She stares daggers at Amity when Amirani and Prometheus bring her to her cell.
  • Disease Bleach: She was left so traumatized by what Odalia and Alador did to her that her hair began to turn from its natural grey to snow white. By the present day, it's completely white, with no trace of greys anywhere.
  • Eyes Always Shut: A Minor Kidroduction in Chapter 21 shows that she kept her eyes closed in her youth. This is still the case in her adult years, though she sometimes opens them to reveal her black eyes.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Whenever she does open her eyes, she reveals they have black sclera and white pupils.
  • Good Parents: Persephone has been through quite a lot, and has some blood on her hands, but there's no questioning that she legitimately loves her daughter, even if her methods to help her were a bit extreme.
  • Heal It with Blood: She uses her blood to heal both Amity and Willow after Amirani is defeated. Of course, in Amity's case, it only healed to an extent...
  • Hikkikomori: Ever since she abdicated the throne, she's been staying over at her room at the dungeons, hidden from the Boiling Underworld.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: She honestly believed that if she didn't make a fuzz about Odalia and Alador's family, then the former would leave her alone. Needless to say, she was proven wrong.
  • Implied Death Threat: When she appears to Odalia at the Blight Ball and the Blight matriarch tries to get on Skara's case, Persephone not-so-subtly warns her that if she goes a step too far, she will freeze and kill her.
  • Medical Monarch: The true ruler of the Boiling Underworld, and has a deep connection to Healing magic.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's easily the most scantily dressed out of her, Skara, and Amity during their big number, wearing what's essentially a purple bikini with gold accessories.
  • Meaningful Name: Named after Demeter's daughter who was kidnapped by Hades and became his wife. This, coincidentally, is what Odalia planned to do before she took more... drastic measures.
  • Mind Manipulation: Can use Mind Magic, one of the forbidden types of magic, which she demonstrates on Skara before giving her to Warden Wrath.
  • Mystical White Hair: Her grey hair turns snow white after being raped, and she's both the true ruler of the Boiling Underworld, and also its most powerful resident, according to the Urodelas.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: The reason why she demanded Boscha's parents to wipe out the Blights; after all, if they were willing to cross all lines even if she didn't bother them, the only way to ensure they'd never hurt her again was to make sure they weren't even around anymore, period.
  • Neutral Female: Tried to act like this regarding Alador and Odalia's situation, but Odalia had other plans...
  • Parents as People: Persephone didn't want Skara to leave the Boiling Underworld because, with the Blight family still around in the Isles, she felt she'd be in greater danger than if she stayed in the Underworld. Alas, she was left so broken and traumatized from what the Blights did to her that she had no choice but to give custody to Warden Wrath, before she wiped her mind to ensure even Skara herself wouldn't reveal their connection by accident.
  • Rape as Backstory: Odalia drugged her, then Bound and Gagged her with magic and duct tape before using Mind Magic to force Alador to rape her, hoping to use the resulting child, Skara, as a bargaining chip. To say she wanted nothing to do with the Blights afterwards would be an understatement.
  • Self-Harm: She cuts her own wrist in order to use her blood to heal both Amity and Willow.
  • World's Strongest Woman: In the Boiling Underworld, she has no equal. And given what a hellhole that place is...
